Bandwidth Reporting Off

I’ve been using Observium for a while and there seems to be some discrepancies between my graphs and the upstream (my data center provides me Ethernet GigE bandwidth). For example, from around 8am to 12pm today it showed overall utilization pretty consistent well above 400Mbps. These switches are actually trunked (2 x 3650 L3 switches). In the graph, it shows the uplink to switch #2 connectivity calculated with the total utilization (VLAN2155). This is definitely not accurate as it shouldn’t do that as far I’m concerned. Total utilization should simply be Drops #1 & #2, which covers all VLANs on both switches. Example: Drop #1 = 40Mbps Drop #2 = 200Mbps Uplink to Switch #2 = 130Mbps Now as a result VLAN2155 (total utilization) is calculating not only #1 and #2 drops from the upstream, but even the trunk port labeled “Uplink to Switch #2”. I disabled polling on that uplink port and the total utilization (VLAN2155) is still far higher than what the output is for the past 24 hours from the upstream provider. They show 187Mbps past 24 hours (95th), 219M In / 202 Out. I show 266M In / 182M Out. Why is it so drastically different? Why is Observium calculating the “uplink” to the trunked 2nd switch in the total utilization graph? This is throwing off accuracy.

VRF/BGP/OSPF discovery in vrf-lite (nx-os)

Hi Does anyone know whether it is currently possible to discover bgp/ospf routing instances within a VRF on the NX-OS platform ? We migrated from IOS to NX-OS, IOS was passing them through snmp just fine. But NX-OS requires snmpv3 contexts for vrf resources. A full walk in the 'default-vrf' does not contain any metrics for the vrf's running on this VDC. Port Group / Entity Question

Hi, Can a port group contain multiple entities checks? I'm trying to just group our carriers for each location into port group. For instance I have our isp/carriers listed in the following format for the port descriptions on our routers L3:CKTID:DEMARC COG:CKTID:DEMARC My entity matches on either of those but when I combine them like the following below, I don't see any devices being associated with it. ifAlias matches *COG:* ifAlias matches *L3:*

Can't Hide Search

Upgraded to latest CE version yesterday. Now the layout is different from 15x and the big search box on the left side of the port listing or device listing won't hide. I replicated this 2 browsers as well.

Hello Lost the graphs on subinterfaces and portchannels. We rebooted a 7604 with IOS 15.4(3)S2 and monitored with Observium 0.16.9.8104. Please review this Cisco document regarding interface persistence. This is likely the issue you are seeing, not a problem with Observium itself. http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/ip/simple-network-management-prot… There is a command you can include in your configuration that will keep interface numbering persistent across reboots. I just don't recall it exactly off the top of my head, or I would include it here. ... Trunk Issues

I've been using Observium for a while and there seems to be some discrepancies between my graphs and the upstream (my data center provides me Ethernet GigE bandwidth). For example, from around 8am to 12pm today it showed overall utilization pretty consistent well above 400Mbps. I have two drops from them: primary and secondary (redundant). Plus, they both show active instead of active/passive. Not sure if that has anything to do with it. >From the tech: "95th percentile is calculated from both ingress and egress traffic. For example, if you used a constant 200Mbps up and down, then you would only be charged your commit of 200Mbps, not double. I do see what you mean that the two handoffs (layer 2) are equaling more than 300Mbps, but when you look at the Aggregate (layer 3) graph at the top, it does not go over 300Mbps. These packets can possibly be queued before going out so you don’t go over your commit. " So, what do you think might be causing this hiccup? I noticed this too: so these switches are actually trunked (2 x 3650 L3 switches). In the graph, it also shows the uplink connectivity calculated with the total utilization. This is definitely not accurate as it shouldn't do that. Example: Drop #1 = 40Mbps Drop #2 = 200Mbps Uplink to Switch #2 = 130Mbps Now as a result VLAN2155 (total utilization) is calculating not only #1 and #2 drops from the upstream, but even the trunk port labeled "Uplink to Switch #2". Can't Add Device

Trying to add my secondary trunked switch, but I get this error "Could not ping switch2.mydomain.com." I ran a DNS lookup on that hostname and it shows the records fine and the switch (#2) accurately. I tried adding the device using the same setup as the original switch that's already there: port 161, udp transport, v2c protocol version, snmp community same as primary. I can ping the hostname too, not sure why Observium cannot.

False positives on Device Alerts

We have an SE installation with about 260 devices being checked. We have alerting setup for various services or checks. Often we see false positives on the SNMP device down alert, for example devices will report SNMP down when they are not really down. After a second or even third SNMP check we see a recovery and the uptime shows no outage. I also verify this by doing and snmpwalk from observium while the “alert” is active. Is there anything we can check or begin to look to find the cause. The server is not overloaded, with either memory or processor. We are running 25 poller wrappers with a complete polling time of about 300 seconds. Thanks, Tim

No devices found

Hi, I am having an issue with latest Observium release 0.16.9.8086 (9th September 2016), after updating to latest revision the discovery/polling is still working fine according to logs, however the web interface shows 'No devices found' and can't access any data. Any hints on how to solve this issue or investigate further ? Resetting the search parameters doesn't help. Best regards, Alessandro

Disabled devices showing on front page

Port Alerts

Hi, I am not sure if this is the correct place to ask this question but I am interested in setting up alerts for key ports only. I have setup the example which shows Enabled ports which are currently down: Tests ifAdminStatus equals up ifOperStatus notequals up Entity Match ifType equals ethernetCsmacd However I cannot work out how to refine it further - such as trunk ports only or if the port description contains a string, such as "CORE". We would like to know when key ports go down only. I have tried adding: ifAlias equals *CORE* and similar configuration but I expect I have the syntax incorrect. The idea would be to alert on either ports containing a certain word in their description or on tagged/trunk ports. I also tried to find a location to search the old emails from this mailing list but have been unable to find it. Many thanks, Peter

Alert check for only one Nexus Fex modul

Hello I have a Nexus switch (hostname is sw01) with lot of FEX. I would like to check only one FEX (fex name is Fex-120) Die-1 temperature value. I go to Devices > Network and select „sw01” device, select Health > Temperature and there i see every FEX sensors. [cid:image001.png@01D214BB.99AFC980] So i would like to create a check for Fex-120 Die-1 if over 45C i would like to get an alert. I tried to create alert check but i am not able to set up correctly. This check get all of FEX temperatures: Device Match: hostname match sw01 Entity Match: sensor_class equals temperature Check Conditions: sensor_value greater 45 What i have to modofiy to get only the requested FEX’s Die-1 temperature? VLANs on Nexus C31128PQ

Alert ifInOctets_perc doesn't match port ifInOctets_perc?

Had a couple of utilisation alerts come through today reporting a 10Gig port as over 80% utilisation, when in reality it doesnt appear to be that busy?. The alert email shows this graph, showing over 100% utilisation and a solid 80+% most of the day: [image: Inline images 1] When you click through the embedded link to the 'real' graph in Observium itself, it reports the correct utilisation figures I would epxect to see based on the traffic graph: [image: Inline images 2] Traffic graph for the port: [image: Inline images 3] Are the alerts reading the information from a different rrd? Doesn't seem like it as the port would be alarming constantly based on the graph in the email as it shows over 80% for most of the day? Happy to accept that the port may have spiked to 8Gbps, but I would have thought this would have been reflected in the graphs somewhere but if anything traffic was tailing off? Is there possibly an issue with the alerting on ifInOctets_perc or do I need to be looking more closely at what the device is reporting, which on face value _seems_ OK looking at a debug of poller.php? There is probably a space in it somewhere, that the location system detects but clicking on the location shows all 15 devices. Hi all, we are using Observium as support tool and have some difficulties with search bar. If someone want to search a description like: Asia-mSwitchVRF_5 you have to fill all letters in one line, for example: mswitchvrf_5 , otherwise no result found. Event if you type "mswitch5" or "asia-mswitchvr5" nothing.. I think we are not alone with this problem here? processors no rrd graphs

Hi All having a strange issue for some reason when i originally added a server, it only found 4 processors, (the server actually had 2 x quad core xeons) i did an observium update recently and suddenly 8 processors now appear but the processors graph is just showing ERROR now ive been able to find the issue the 4 new processors arnt putting any data into the rrd files ? Hi all, When temporarily disabling email alerts we used to set: $config['email']['enable'] = FALSE; As per: http://www.observium.org/docs/config_options/#email-backend-settings <http://www.observium.org/docs/config_options/#email-backend-settings> However this is no longer working. Device availability - possible feature request?

Hi For the purposes of alerting, is availability a a metric that can be used, and if not is it possible to add somthing where we could create an alert i.e. Type device device_availabilty le 99.5% Device Match * Entity Match * Delay 1 The issue I see is that the duration or scope is a defining factor, i.e availability over X days or X months etc

I/O Latency Metric Alert?

Hi, Is there an attachment point for alerts to be triggered from the metric of I/O Latency? Reason for asking is that I could do with an alert checker which would have spotted this issue (the scale is in seconds!): It went unnoticed overnight until it crippled a virtual host when users started accessing VMs on it this morning. The underlying fault was a RAID card issue, but nothing else detected it and I've just found that Observium 'knew' about it, but we have not alerts which would have caught this. Any ideas? Cheers! Device Commets and notes

Hi, I can see that a ticket has been raised for adding a place to add comments and notes to devices on ticket OBSERVUM-249 http://jira.observium.org/browse/OBSERVIUM-249 The workaround is to use the Description field. However this field is too small to store much useful info, and cannot be read easily as the field does not expand to show more characters. IPMI

Hi, I have two servers both with IPMI ports enabled and working. Within Observium I have configured the IPMI Settings for both servers. For one of the servers Observium displays the relevant IPMI information (e.g, CPU Temp etc) however for the second server, the information is not displayed. Firmware are identical. I have confirmed the IPMI configuration a number of times and connectivity does not appear to be the issue. Anyway to troubleshoot this? Thanks Laurence

Hi, We configured a billing type CDR/95th, but notice the values for outbound & 95th percentile are the same.Screenshot of the historical usage overview: We have a subscription and this is on version 0.16.3.7703 (22nd March 2016).Today we updated to version 0.16.8.8068 (23rd August 2016). APC NetBotz. Support for 'Dry contact inputs'....?

Hello Not sure if this is the proper channel for feature requests. But it would be awesome to have support for the ‘Dry contact inputs’ on the APC NetBotz devices. Still not sure how to do a proper likeable snmpwalk so someone will probably shake their head and wave their fist in fury over this one. But hey, at least I tired. =) Snmpwalk output: http://pastebin.com/qcV8vX98 That one have 4 connected ‘dry contact inputs’ and you can see their name under for instance ‘emsProbeConfigProbeName.<n>’, ‘emsProbeStatusProbeName.<n>’ and ‘emsInputContactConfigInputContactName.<n>’ and then some... Also normal state and current state are represented in that walk. This particular netbotz is in charge of switching to secondary cooling circuit and firing those pumps up in case of failure on main circuit. Not seeing unix system graphs

I’ve got a CentOS 6.7 VM (that runs my Observium instance, currently at version 8068-stable) that I’m trying to monitor with the unix agent described here: http://www.observium.org/docs/unix_agent/ Installation of the agent went fine, as did the telnet testing from the host itself. I got a bunch of data via telnet. Also, SNMP has already been configured on the server and it’s polling itself properly (as far as I can tell) From my Observium web page, I see the system and can some details for it. The Overview shows me high level system info (kernel version, hostname, Location, uptime, etc) and the Event Log. Graphs only show Agent Execution Time, Ping Response, SNMP Response, and Poller Duration. From looking at the live demo on the Observium website, I’m assuming I should be seeing a bunch of additional data (processors, memory, netstat data, load averages, etc, etc, etc). I’ve taken a look at the device configuration settings and can’t see anything that I’m missing. Any ideas for what to look at next will be much appreciated. Thanks, Glenn Cooper

Observium group alerting?

Can the grouping system be utilized for alerting at this time? Example: setup alert checker to monitor device status of a group of devices and send single alert if any of those devices goes down. Or is the grouping feature only used for information viewing and scheduled maintenance? We are looking at options for suppressing amount of alerts that can occur at some of our larger locations. bind_cache failing to write via RRDCached

Hi, Having a good time today…! Got another oddity since the upgrade of the Observium server itself to 16.04 unfortunately :( In summary, all servers running BIND (they are still on 14.04) have now got zero ‘cache content’ stats since the Observium server was upgraded on Tuesday. However, all the other BIND stats are working OK: [cid:image001.jpg@01D1D944.38CA7190] Looking at the debug output, it is getting the data fine, and it’s writing out the values to RRDCacheD OK. I tried disabling RRDCacheD – it started working straight away. So, it looks like RRDCacheD (version 1.5.5 under 16.04) is unhappy with writing the ‘Cache’ elements content output for BIND. If I had to guess, I’d say it’s either: 1) something to do with the quantity of DS elements within that RRD (all 42 of them) 2) something relating to the use of an “!” in the name of the elements (that’s a proper random guess) The write attempt is: mupdate /opt/observium/rrd/x.y.net/app-bind-23-cache-default.rrd N:6:3:::392500:799:13060:27296:825744:29:17815:555:67263:160:8::9660:2238:49:382:23:14:::::::259181:22:2::45094::26347::::::6715::::::: My old RRDCacheD config was: DISABLE=0 OPTS="-w 1800 -z 1800 -f 3600 -s www-data -l unix:/var/run/rrdcached.sock -j /var/lib/rrdcached/journal/ -F -b /opt/observium/rrd -B" MAXWAIT=30 ENABLE_COREFILES=0 The new config has different parameters, so I’ve setup as follows: DAEMON=/usr/bin/rrdcached WRITE_TIMEOUT=1800 WRITE_JITTER=1800 BASE_PATH=/opt/observium/rrd/ JOURNAL_PATH=/var/lib/rrdcached/journal/ PIDFILE=/var/run/rrdcached.pid SOCKFILE=/var/run/rrdcached.sock SOCKGROUP=www-data BASE_OPTIONS="-F -B" Does anyone know of anything which could cause this? RANCID tab gone after update to 8068

As the title says, upgraded via svn to 8068 and the config tab is gone. Integration to smokeping still works, as well as the user agents and everything else, but no rancid. Rancid setup is still in the config file too. Anyone else seen it disappear after any update? On a side note, svn is reporting at revision 8069 while the gui is reporting 8068. Ldap issues with edit users

Hi All, If anyone is using the ldap piece, I need your assistance. When you navigate to users --> edit users, it says no users in database, then any navigation to any other link, it brings you to the login screen. Most of the time, it will never load the edit users page and you can no longer navigate anything. Closing the tab out on the browser doesn't help either. Observium becomes unresponsive. Very rarely, it will actually show the users. It seems like something is clearing some cache in the background. Anyone experiencing these issues with ldap? Thanks, ----------------------- Leo Dano

Time on X-axis of graphs is 1 hour off.

Hello What setting have I missed when my time on the X-axis on the graphs is one hour off (-1). Time of alerts are okay. So only the graph that shows -1 hour. ‘date’ on the server shows proper date and time. Hi!, anybody tried to get capacity metrics for AD services?, like DHCP scopes, LDAP connections, etc?. DHCP scope is exported by SNMP, for SCOPE capacity and usage, but given generic OID feature can graph a single data source, it's dificult to make that counter useful. Any suggestions? Problem to update machine location

Hi, I have moved some virtual servers to another data center. I have updated their syslocation code in their snmp file /etc/snmp/snmpd.conf Snmpwalk and poller display the right (new) syslocation code, but Observium does not. Which items did I miss on the checklist? Thx Bernard

App alerting

I saw a few weeks back a commit 8083 added "Add ability to store JSON data for apps.” and got all excited. Is this the starting for app-based alerting? I have amended my FreeSWITCH poller to store an array in my app name in readiness for the potential of some app-alerting goodness and see it now gets logged in a new column applications.app_json. If only there were a way to create an alert checker that polled it! :) Maybe like Device Match: "os equals linux” Entity Match: “application equals freeswitch”, condition: "peaksessionspersecond greater 10”? ubuntu upgrade 14.04->16.04; VRF list is not showing?

Tried a test upgrade here on a system running observium professional (0.16.8.8086). Ubuntu upgrade went fine, added in mcrypt, php7.0. Was able to get into observium and most items looked ok that I could find with the exception of the VRF listing. (attached) The other areas, BGP, OSPF, etc all list out fine. The VRF section, as you can see lists the 2151 VRF's that we have but they are not displayed/listed. I checked php.ini, memory limit was set to 1024M which is the same I had w/ php5 under 14.04. Went back to 14.04 and figured I'd ask if anyone here who's done a similar upgrade has seen anything similar or any ideas on what else I can check?

Log's spammed by "Interface changed: [ifAdminStatus] '' -> '0'" for two devices after svn up.

Hi there. Since the 19th of July, when I most probably svn up'ed, I have two identical devices that spams the logs with "Interface changed: [ifAdminStatus] '' -> '0'". They're 2 Tandberg LTO libraries and the're no sensor monitored in it, since not supported, but only the admin interface availability. Openstreetmap / Cartocdn wrong certificate

Hi All I just came back from vacation and updated Observium. The map is now done with OSM/Carto, which is nice, boot it took me a while to find out why no map was loading. As it looks like all the cdn nodes have no SAN for *.basemaps.cartocdn.com The tiles get loaded in my browser from a.basemaps.cartocdn.com b.basemaps.cartocdn.com c.basemaps.cartocdn.com After adding an exception for these, all works well.. Does anyone have the same issue? Observium LDAP Edit Users very buggy

Hello, I think I may have found the specific device access only via the Edit Users area. The only issue is that it is hit n miss. I sometimes can see my ldap users that have logged in and sometimes not. Once I do see the users, I edit one and give that person access to a group, but if I click any link, it puts me back at the login page. Which takes a few tries to log back in. Then sometimes when I click the edit users, no users show up. Is this part of the bugginess of Observium and LDAP integration? I am using the latest version per Subscription. Rancid integration - config tabs won't show up

Hi @ll First, I want to give you guys from Observium a big thumb up because having a such easy webapp, so easily maintainable, so powerful and all without marketing layers and super complicated licensing makes you kind of unique on the market. Now to the issue, I'm trying to integrate my rancid files into the latest stable version of Observium (did it last week following official observium tutorial). Now I have multiple entries in the config.php (because of multiple router.db files/directories in rancid) : $config['rancid_configs'][] = "/var/lib/rancid/ juniper1/configs/"; $config['rancid_configs'][] = "/var/lib/rancid/ juniper2/configs/"; $config['rancid_configs'][] = "/var/lib/rancid/ juniper3/configs/"; $config['rancid_ignorecomments'] = 0; All the /var/lib/rancid/ directory is chowned by rancid:rancid. www-data is in rancid group. I restarted apache2. I cleared the cache from browser. I checked the config in the observium web-interface and it's correctly read by the server (I see the lines above). I checked the hostnames, and the ones I am backing up with rancid are matching the ones registered in the observium. But there are some observium devices I am not backing up yet. Hi there, I've configured an alert that checks if ifInOctets_perc exceeds 80% utilisation and I'm finding that the alert is being triggered for normal amounts of traffic. What steps can I take to resolve this? Hi, I noticed that postgresql application data disappeard on all servers recently. It ran fine for years, but since Aug 12, a new rrd file gets created on every poll, and the postgresql application tab is absent for all servers. I'm updating my installation daily on 9am, so this started happening after the Aug 12 update. Is there any way to utilize local authentication and LDAP authentication simultaneously? We would like to utilize LDAP for our technicans, but also be able to create local users for client access. Thoughts on "locations" front-page module

In our setup the ‘map’ frontage module is pretty and impresses exec level types, however the space is mostly wasted as far as an engineer is concerned, requiring multiple clicks to drill in to areas of interest. I’d like to have the location table as seen at http://observium/locations <http://observium/locations> on my home page instead. Is this an option that can be implemented simply enough? Does anyone else think that this is a good idea? Thanks for looking!

Please help create an alert :) Nexus FEX PS problem

Hello At the night the Observium showed an alert (fortunately) that I never set up in the Alert checks . I see this alert in Global/Alerts and the left up box there is an “1 alert” in the Statuses row. If I click the “1 alert” it shows me that a Cisco Nexus FEX modul’s powersupply EVENT is alert and Status is offDenied. So it is a dead PS. What I can to do if I would like to get alert if this happen again? I have lot of Alert Checks but I am not able to do an alert for this PS check because I don’t know what is the correct Entity match of it. I tried the “sensor_class equals powersupply” and Test is “sensor_value greater 2” (looks the normal PS value is 2, now this failed PS value is 4). But it doesn’t work (no matched entities). alerting problem

Hello, At the morning I was on the 7933 but 2 hours ago I updated to 8039. I used a CPU alert for my routers. In the older version it is worked, I got the alerts via mail and PagerDuty as I set up. Now after the upgrade I would like to test the alerting because on 7933 i “pached” the pagerduty.inc.php for more info in the PD message (the default file just send like “something wrong somewhere” :) So. After the upgrade with the original (nor pached) PD file I would like a test to see how looks out a PD message now. I set a lower value for the CPU alerting (from 50% to 15%) to generate alerting (now the cpu load is 18-25%) After a few minutes I see in the Alers / Processor that my deviced appear and show that the status is FAILED. It is ok. In the Alert Logging I get the “Checks failed” so it is great. But. I never get “Alert notification sent” messages. (I get “Alert notification sent” for other events, so the alerting is working for other services). I see in the Alerts that the router’s status is Failed, Checked 18s Changed 20m 36s, Alerted: never. What I have to do for send the alerts? Or for the debug? Thanks BR Laszlo

Hi, Thanks for the confirmation, it’s great that alerting on an OID will be coming soon and in my case that will work, I’ll keep the App for viewing graphs and use a custom OID to monitor alerts by. Ultimately alerting on data collected by apps would be beneficial but not essential, as it will give neater integration options but I can see the complexities in that, maybe allowing apps to store pertinent stats for alerting in a column holding an array with a sub-array for each app? Anyway, I look forward to seeing the OID alerting soon. Alerting on apps is much more complex, I'm not entirely sure how to approach it at the moment. I suspect it may not look exactly like the current alerting, but it is probably some time away. DeltaUPS graphs broken after r8016

Well not really... but it will not use renamed RRDs before after a new discovery of sensors. Meanwhile polling will create new RRDs with old names, so it seems you have lost all data. Several hours of data can be missed because of this. Maybe some improvements can be done for that. NOTICE: Please immediately e-mail back to sender if you are not the intended recipient. Holes in graphs

Hello all, We're seeing holes on our graphs (example attached). This appears to be affecting all graphs in our installation on all devices. I know our connection is good (affecting LAN and WAN devices), but looking for any other ideas for correcting this? We have also tried increasing the number of poller processes. Graphs no longer draw after restore

Hi, I recently restored observium to a different machine. I restored the following: config.php mysql db rrd Everything looks good except for the fact that graphs stopped drawing and display data in a real time. When i click on port to see real time data, i get "can't get data about port xxx". See attached images. Any ideas ? Thanks

No memory pools detected for OSX hosts

Hi there, I'm running Observium 0.16.7.8003 (stable) for monitoring OSX hosts which is working great, except no memory pools are being detected for any hosts apart from "Swap space". Memory for OSX hosts did work previously, but after I mailed in re: "Incorrect free physical memory for Unix hosts" and Adam A. made a change, the memory pools have disappeared. What's the best course of action? Many thanks Olly
