Alert Dependencies

I've asked about this before but how hard would it be for you guys to implement alert dependencies? The easiest way I can think of doing it would be to simply let us set a "parent" device for anything, and if that device is offline don't send any alerts for downstream devices. For example we have a testlab that has no UPS/Generator power that we monitor about 200 devices, when the building loses power we get those 200 alarms about devices being offline, when in reality there is a single 6500 as the gateway, and if that switch is offline, i know the rest will be. We don't want to disable the offline alarms because we do want to know when individual devices drop out. Hi, On Observium commercial, all of our OpenBSD firewalls fail to draw the "Processors" graph on the device Overview page :( However if you go to the "Graphs" tab on the Device page, the "Processors" graphs do draw.. It seems to only be limited to the "Overview" tab on the device page. Our Linux servers, Cisco, HP gear etc are all fine. For both the OpenBSD firewalls and the Linux servers, the Processors graph on the Overview page seems to be based on "Device (ucd_ss_cpu)". But the Processors graph which does work looks to be based on "Device (processor)". So it seems that "Device (ucd_ss_cpu)" is not populated for OpenBSD, where Observium thinks it should be. Help needed with unix-agent

Hello, I have installed ubuntu on virtual machine, configured bind and unix-agent successfully, in observium were able to see the application "bind" and all the graphs related to bind were displayed. After few days, I made a copy of vmware virtual machine (on which bind was running), added it to observium (with new IP), telnet to 36605 shows the output related to bind but observium showing that no application is running on the new virtual machine. so, 2 queries: 1) what am i missing? 2) How to debug step by step Regards Gaurav

Brocade VDX Switch

Hello Team, We just moved from Extreme to Brocade and found out that Observium does not detect properly the VDX Switch stack. It just has the logo with a "?". Any ideas if the VDX line from brocade will be add it to the Professional Version? DPKG version listing order

Hi all, We've recently added the DPKG agent to some of our Debian hosts so that we can keep on top of what's up-to-date and what isn't. So far it's been quite helpful, except I have one small niggle with it, the way that it lists the version orders of the packages. See below: The nginx version on the above are listed in the order of: 1.8.0 1.8.1 1.9.11 1.9.12 1.9.14 1.9.15 1.9.5 1.9.9 Where if they were listed in version order they would be listed: 1.8.0 1.8.1 1.9.5 1.9.9 1.9.11 1.9.12 1.9.14 1.9.15 Is there anyway that this can be worked around, or is there any plan to implement a fix? Specific use case: We cannot currently send syslog messages from all our network devices to the Observium host and would be looking to use BPDU counters as an indication that a spanning-tree event had occurred. Hi guys, I think something got broken in polling of ESXI servers… not sure where exactly, but on or about 4 May, the “Operating System” section changed from the full build information to “Operating system VMware (build-)”. Alert on high availability status change on Checkpoint

Hello, We have a few checkpoint firewalls and I am looking to generate email alerts when the HA status changes from OK to critical. The Observium logs look a bit like this when it occurs: 2016-05-12 16:58:30 High Availability (standby) Status Alert: cpnew02 High Availability (standby) entered ALERT state: CRITICAL (previous: OK) 2016-05-12 16:58:28 cpfw04 Features -> ClusterXL inactive or machine is down 2016-05-11 10:30:04 High Availability (standby) Status updated: checkpoint-ha-state haStatCode.0 High Availability (standby) 2016-05-11 10:28:03 High Availability (standby) Status Ok: cpnew02 High Availability (down) entered OK state: OK (previous: CRITICAL) Does anyone have any advice on how to build the alert checker for this? The high Availability icon looks to be a traffic lights one while the devices themselves show as the normal device icon - so I think they may be discovered as separate entities. I am also a bit unsure on how to filter to the OS "Check Point GAiA R77.45 (standby)" so for now have just been using device type firewall. Unhide the hidden showtech tab

Hi, Does anyone know how to unhide the "showtech" tab for all the devices? For example, go to somewhere like; https://observium/device/device=17/tab=ports/ And change the "ports" for "showtech". http://observium/device/device=<device_id>/tab=showtech/ This page is useful, and would be nice to have the button on the device page instead of having to remember a URL hack, when debugging missing data or problems monitoring devices etc (esp when using rancid and smokeping like we do). Citrix Netscaler vServer

Hello, we have a Citrix Netscaler (x2 HA) that we monitor but there is no Loadbalancer Tab on the device page. So we are unable to see vServers info etc. Have ensured that the SNMP view is FULL as opposed to Read only on the device themselves. Both nodes are running Citrix Netscaler NS10.5 (Build 57.7.nc) Running CE 0.16.1.7533 (26th January 2016). Am I correct in thinking that I should be able to see vServer info? If so some suggestions to resolve this would be welcome. Disk size alert Windows

Hi all, I really struggle to get a proper alert on a Windows C: drive size. Checker is as follows (can also be found in attachment): Storage_perc greater 50 Hostname match ampere* Entity * Only if I fill it in as above at least the checker is added. As soon as I change entity to storage_type equals hrStorageFixedDisk like written in manuals it doesn't even add the check after the rebuild option. I have run ./poller.php -h ampere.companyname.pvt -dd with attached result. As you can see the C:\ drive is filled more than 50% so I would expect an alert. Who can help me with this? Observium and Slack

Hi guys, Has anyone gotten Slack Alert notifications working? We have email alerts working but not Slack. NB; Running the commercial version (0.16.2.7629). We have a webhook URL for a private slack channel https://hooks.slack.com/services/xxxxxxxxx/yyyyyyyy/zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz (x, y and z replaced for public viewing) I tried the custom webhook "Contact", however we don't know how to transpose our slack webhook into the fields provided (URL, Authentication token, Sender of message). There is no Authentication, and their is no Sender (the sender is defined by the webhook on the Slack side). But only filling in the URL field with the webhook doesn't work :( Doing a "curl" test on the Observium server terminal with the webhook works fine? Have also tried creating the new slack "Contact", But I have no idea how I'm supposed to transpose this webhook into the fields provided; (Channel name, Username, Instance URL). Assume this only works for public channels where you enter in user details for Observium instead of using a webhook. Generally not sure how to debug this. Noobie.. Thanks, Andy.

Hi Adam, Is there a way to debug it? If I enter a word in the Billing Name nothing is found but I am sure that there are records matching the search string. syslog stops working

Hi, we have syslog-ng configured and went through the documentation about how to get syslog into Observium. It works for a while(from 10mins to several hours) and then it stops to display or handle syslog. Restarting the syslog daemon generates a strange message in the logs. -0001-11-30 00:00:00 Alert (1) 1 : 1 It's very low volume. Maybe 100-1000 messages per day. Your thoughts for Big Company and Big ISPs are small. Nobody wants to add thirty thousand devices in a hostname list, or with an nonsense script. They will choose a system that will be allowed to add devices by a subnet or network. That it means IP Address. Not hostname. We are not talking about servers hostnames, that are static, and won't change, even if the room is burned and the building is down. We are not talking about a BGP Router, or a Main router, that are always and forever there, if possible. We are talking about thousand of devices that are changing, at least, once a day. Ron, An DNS fail, doesn't mean I have one DNS server. With all your expertise, you should see other possibilities, other scenarios. Come on. It simply doesn't make sense to have a system that allow you to add a Device by IP address when it wants and later, it's not possible anymore. But you can try tomorrow, because tomorrow the system will accept the IP address. This is a bug for me. Joseph, The system works with IP Address. Whats is the diference to have an option to add devices by IP Address? Not even an option, because it already works, but just sometimes, if you are lucky. Another point, Sure I can make a script, but we are not talking about an expert user to be using the system. Can't this scenario be thought? We have "normal" people operating the system too. How do you think they will reach the Knowledge for this? They not even have access to the system console. You are closing your mind to main possibilities. I am talking about adding 3000 devices in a system, where these devices, does not need a hostname, it simply needs an IP address for eventual access. Because if we have a hostname like juliocesar.company.com, tomorrow, this device will be deactivated and activated for another customer with another name but the same IP address, and it's an infinite routine, because customers are not eternal, and IP addresses are not infinite. Can you imagine an system where we need advanced user only to use? Do you think Microsoft and Apple would be where they are with a software where only advanced user are able to use? Adam, What is an important device to you? Do you think that a customer side device isn't important to be monitored? How many devices have you ever seen in a network? Have you worked in an ISP? Observium: Full Page World Map

Observium team, I was playing around with this myself, but my understanding of PHP is quite limited. I hacked something together myself but it doesn't scale well. Would be possible to add a feature to view the Observium world map in full screen mode? I understand that one could easily argue how this feature wouldn't bring much benefit. They wouldn't be wrong. That said, it would still be a nice to have Observium hanging in the NOC on a TV with a full screen map. I think that's originally what you were going for by having a map on the main landing page. I'm just thinking one step further. Just a suggestion. (Please feel free to tell me if I'm just doing it wrong~) Thank you. Hi everyone, right now it is possible to filter syslog messages on the frontpage with a statement in config.php: $config['frontpage']['syslog']['priority'] = array('emerg','alert'); // for example I think it would be nice to have something similar for the eventlog. For example to filter interfaces going up/down and interface-throughput: $config['frontpage']['eventlog']['filter'] = array('ifSpeed','ifOperStatus'); Maybe this feature is already implemented and i am not able to find it?! Joseph, The customer premisses equipment (CPE) are managed and accessed internally for monitoring and maintenance of customer internet connection. Customers are not eternal. Can you imagine to a system administrator expends all the day adding hostnames in a DNS Server for at least 10 CPE per day that can be changed 2 days after or a weekend after? They use hostnames for servers, main routers, main switches, and other devices that are usually in the Data Center. Discard out error rate check

Hello, On the 7793 we try to create a check that alert if the interface discards TX errors on our Nexus switch more than 0 per sec. This error is real, we see it on Observium graphs (Device->Port->Error->Discards TX ) and on the switch’s CLI too. We created this check but looks like it doesn’t work: ifOutDiscards_rate notequals 0 We tried it with “gt 1” instead of "notequals 0” without result. :( In an another check the ”ifInErrors_rate” is working, but the ifOutDiscards_rate not. Cannot add Device by IP Address but can by hostname

Hi All, I have many devices in our network that do no have hostnames and nor do I want to maintain DNS records for devices that do as this will be a nightmare to managed. Is there a way I can simply add a whole subnet range to Observium without using hostname? Cheers, Ivan

We often serve temporary events arround, and we need to add this devices for monitoring in somewhere. Now imagine, every weekend, add to host files, IP address to temporary devices. Ok, use always the same IP. Right. In one event we use 5 devices, in another 8. And what if we have 2 or more events at the same time? What if my DNS server, that is a monitored server as well fails? All my monitoring will stop? IP address is faster and more reliable than Hostnames. I would like you to think about adding devices just by hostname. We have 3000 devices on the network that we would like to add. But none of them need registered hostname. For this we have SNMP. They are end devices. They need to be monitored to order history and reports, but do not need DNS Names. Important devices have the hostname on the DNS, but any monitoring services we used before, we added the devices by hostname. IP is faster. I don't think it's my personal option. It's a use case that many Service Providers as us, have. You have two Scenarios that are not that simple as it looks. We have important devices. Ok. We need host names, but and for temporary devices, as an CPE. Can you imagine the work you are giving to us? Or to any ISP that cares about the customer? It's impossible that only us, as ISP serve temporary events. Don't you think? In my opinion, and it's not hard to implement, you should think in this scenarios. It won't cost nothing to have both options, IP and Host name. Every monitoring system you search, won't have this limitation. Adam. It's not my problem. It's what you said. It's a different scenario that is not implemented in the system. Can't you see how many people are complaining about this issue? Observium is a great software as I could see until now. Congratulations, But, please, think about this situation. In three days there are three people having this difficult. How many people, do you think, simply have given up thinking it's a bug on the software, just because, sometimes it add devices by IP and sometimes it cannot solve the host name? Many customers do not complain, they simply turn around and go away. Does that complain, it's because really like your work, and wants it better. Dear readers, Using Observium quite some time now. And am wondering if the following is possible, I'm asking because after a couple of days of searching for it, I can't find it anywhere. What I would like to have or maybe to be able to execute on Observium is a way so I can view what the incoming and outgoing traffic is for an given month. I am able to view it (and even see the bill options) but not to export it or see the absolute values. (for example 13,33 Gb out 21,65 Gb in) Better Example. For customer X, I want to see what his traffic was for box x from April 1 to April 30. And off course this is with Incoming and outgoing values. If there is already a way to view this data in an easy way and I've missed it. Then sorry for this pointless mail. Regards, Danny op de Dijk

Cron Causing Kayako System Logout and Unable to run Observium Cron simultaneously

Hi All, I having a problem related to Cron Job where if I started my cron job,my kayako will logout me from the system and if I stop the cron job I unable to pulled data for Observium. I had followed Observium on how to set the cron for it to pulled the data as shown inside the Observium page but still the cron will impact Kayako.Every time I started the cron job it will clash as Kayako also running php as well. Actually, the hostname requirement actually finally "inspired" me to get my sh*t together and get a good DNS system running for internal devices, and now everyone else around the office is much happier, they're not having to dog around and do "manual" resolution by asking "what the heck is that IP address again?" To each their own, I guess. I'm glad it does have the hostname resolution requirement. It made me be a better network architect. You cannot add devices by IP address. You need to have working DNS resolution, or have host to IP mapping in your /etc/hosts file. Hi all, Been using Observium for a while and love it. We just added a couple of our ESXI 5.1 servers to Observium in the hopes of being able to monitor bandwidth usage on individual VM's and bill against it. It polled the physical NIC's but not the virtual ones. We do have multiple VLAN's too if this makes a difference. Any way to do this? Hello, I am trying to add some new devices to monitoring, but I am receiving the error Could not resolve 10.251.15.182 I have added the devices with IP 10.251.15.181, 10.251.15.183, But devices 10.251.15.182 and 10.251.15.184 presents the Resolve Error. As you can see, it's an IP address. Pinging from the console is possible, as the traceroute leads to the same path. The reverse path works. Searching I found the way to add by command line. It was possible to add the two devices, 10.251.15.182 and 10.251.15.184. Ok. But now, when I try to add other devices on the same network, the error "Could no resolve 10.251.15.xxx" persists. The server is on the same network. 10.251.15.22 Aparently it's a kind of bug with the interface, that is trying to resolve with the DNS an IP address. This other case, I am not sure, but in a moment, it aparentely to try to add a device, but not sure what message it gives, but it was related to snmp comunity, I guess, and in a second try,it presents the Can not resolve, error. This case I don't have much details. It only happened one time. Hi All, Is there a way to share live/active charts for custom OID’s with Global Read Only view users ? I want my User Support team to be able to see a live chart of the Cisco Any connect users I’ve got a Custom OID for; it is a single chart covering all gateway devices specifically for SSL VPN/AnyConnect type connections, it lets us see the distribution of connections across gateways. Hello Everyone, I have been using Observium to monitor a variety of network devices and VMWare ESXi hosts. Observium is doing a great job in gathering all the data from these devices and it is really helpful. I am trying to setup some alerts for disk, cpu and network utilizations but not receiving any emails. Here are some more details.Version: Observium CE 0.16.1.7533 1) I have modified below lines with right email address.// set up alerts $config['alerts']['email']['default'] = "mail(a)example.com"; ## Default alert recipient$config['alerts']['email']['default_only'] = true; ## Only use default recipient$config['alerts']['email']['enable'] = true; ## Disable email alerts as we do not use observium for monitoring but only for metering$config['uptime_warning'] = "86400"; ## Time in seconds to display a "Device Rebooted" warning, defualts to 1 day. Set to 0 to disable warnings.$config['alerts']['port']['ifdown'] = false; ## Generate an alert for ports which enter the ifdown state. 2) Tried sending test mail using ./test_alert.php./test_alert.php -a "some text" 3) Logged in to Web UI, under global settings set all buttons to default under "Use DB" 4) Setup some tests and to trigger alerts and looks like it tried to send some alerts, seeing a time entry under Alerted column. 5) Checked observium log(logs/observium.log) and system logs to see if there were any attempts to send out an email. No entries were found. 6) Observium server is able to send out emails, i have tested it using mailx and sendmail commands, it uses postfix configuration. I am not able to find where the issue is. Hi, Is there any plan to implement LDAP / Active Directory users permission for devices like local users? Poller Overruns

Hi We are currently running OBSERVIUM Professional Ed with 31 Cisco 7600/3560/2960 polling around 5000+ ports. The Traffic graphs are showing gaps as the poller seems to be taking a lot of time. We have tried different values for the poller wrapper threads (16, 32, 48, 64) on a 16 core/64GB RAM machine but not seen any improvement. We have also tried different values for the 'ma-rep' field for snmp bulkwalk (5, 10 etc) - had seen improvement initially after enabling with 5, but the polling times seem to have increased automatically after some time. We are currently running with 64 Poller threads and max-rep 10. Pls suggest if we are missing something. A few screen-shots are attached. BGP modul question

Hello We use the PE 7703 version and we would like to use the BGP modul for our Cisco ASR 9001 router. On the Observium / Routing tab we see the OSPF connections but there is no BGP section. We hard-enabled the BGP in the config.php ($config['enable_bgp'] = 1;) but it doesn’t help. All of BGP related mysql tables are empty. What we did wrong? :) Thanks Laszlo

Hi, When drawing the traffic summary graph for two Cisco ASA contexts (on the same physical ASA HA setup) i get the error below. I can’t see whats wrong with the RRD CMD. Any ideas? Hi All not sure if people have noticed but Lets Encrypt has become very popular at the moment as a very simple fast way of getting SSL https://letsencrypt.org/getting-started/ is was very simple and easy for myself as it just worked! clone the repo, let it install its requirements, and run ./letsencrypt-auto — apache and boom it was done :) would it be possible to add to to the install guide as Optional SSL step? Hi all. After upgrading Observium to the latest CE, the frontpage show 0 ports Total/Up/Down: [image: Inline image 1] I have all ports set with polling = yes and alert = no. Any reason Total/Up/down is no longer showing anything else than 0? Any ideas on how to fix it? -- Gard -- No trees were killed in the sending of this message. We have SFP+ with DOM support, displaying a lot of information, unfortunately, Observium only displays information of SFP+ in first Supervisor. Any idea? mounting a new filesystem

Hi all, Apologies if this has been asked before, or I've missed it in the list; I recently added a new drive to a server, and mounted the new drive to a directory. Edited output. root@tethys:~# df -h Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on rootfs 85G 2.4G 79G 3% / /dev/sdb1 148G 2.8G 138G 2% /netflow As you can see in the screenshot below, it shows the root directory ~2.5GB, but not the /netflow dir which is at 2.8GB. [image: Inline image 1] Am I missing something here ? I assume I should be seeing 2 lines, 1 for / and 1 for /netflow as they are different disks. Or if this graph is supposed to represent / in total, it should be over 5GB.. Thanks for your time :) Ross.

Alert Conditions - Check Conditions

Hi, I'm trying to setup an Alert for monitoring Fortigate Sessions. For testing I have a Check Condition of "fortigate_sessions gt 100" The issue I am finding is that the check is matching again percentage and not value. The fortigate has 200 sessions currently, so it should trigger the alert, but it doesn't because it seems to be monitoring percentage and the percentage is constantly 100% How do I check against the value of 200 instead of percentage? Hi! I get this error when enabling libvirt. I created a dev instance (CE: 0.16.1.7533 ) to investigate the wmi / win2k8 unknown processor issue. This correctly shows the processor but doesn't auto login with " AuthBasicFake guest guest" in the apache conf like the production one does. to setup : cp config.php.default config.php sed -i -e s:USERNAME:observium: -e s:PASSWORD:xxxxx: -e 's:"public":"xxxxxxxxx", "public":' config.php (added fping location and proxy info to config.php) ./discovery.php -u ./adduser.php admin xxxx 10 ./adduser.php guest guest 5 ./add_device.php $HOSTNAME going to https://observium.dev.gov.au, i can login as either guest or admin and see everything correctly. I added "AuthBasicFake guest guest" to the apache config and restarted apache. but it won't login automagically. problem with overall traffic view

hello, I found a little problem (maybe not a bug, but I think is not so good). if I use "overall_traffic" aggregation (ie for peering) observium make a graph with stacking the traffic from all the ports with a description starting with a label (ie "peering:"), and it works ok. but if I modify a port (ie dismiss a peering, removing also the "peering:" label from the router interface) observium remove all the pregress traffic the old interface did from the 'peering' graph, so you lose part of the old stats :-( isn't it possible to have the overall_traffic collected in a dedicated rrd, use the sum of labelled interfaces for new data and use the rrd data for the old data in order to have a real historic data even if I change a port? thanks -- bye, emilio
