Customer billing search

Hi, I want to search for a bill, but the bill search function seems to be broken again, even when we clear the search settings no records are found. A refresh (F5) of the page show all records again. Is it possible to fix this? We are running version 0.16.5.7833. Hi All im not sure if this is possible but thought i would email and ask i use the Postfix Queue Shape graph and works brilliantly! is the a way of doing an alert event if the Deferred on one of our servers has an email in it for more then say 15mins ? regards Simon

No Filesystem info for Solaris version 5.10?

Hello All, I am getting filesystem info in Solaris version 5.11 but not in 5.10. Is there a way to gain this info in Observium, or is it only supported in Solaris 5.11? I get memory, proc and network fine but no filesystem info. Thanks, ----------------------- Leo Dano

syslog stops working

Hi, we have syslog-ng configured and went through the documentation about how to get syslog into Observium. It works for a while(from 10mins to several hours) and then it stops to display or handle syslog. Restarting the syslog daemon generates a strange message in the logs. -0001-11-30 00:00:00 Alert (1) 1 : 1 It's very low volume. Maybe 100-1000 messages per day. Your thoughts for Big Company and Big ISPs are small. Nobody wants to add thirty thousand devices in a hostname list, or with an nonsense script. They will choose a system that will be allowed to add devices by a subnet or network. That it means IP Address. Not hostname. We are not talking about servers hostnames, that are static, and won't change, even if the room is burned and the building is down. We are not talking about a BGP Router, or a Main router, that are always and forever there, if possible. We are talking about thousand of devices that are changing, at least, once a day. Ron, An DNS fail, doesn't mean I have one DNS server. With all your expertise, you should see other possibilities, other scenarios. Come on. It simply doesn't make sense to have a system that allow you to add a Device by IP address when it wants and later, it's not possible anymore. But you can try tomorrow, because tomorrow the system will accept the IP address. This is a bug for me. Joseph, The system works with IP Address. Whats is the diference to have an option to add devices by IP Address? Not even an option, because it already works, but just sometimes, if you are lucky. Another point, Sure I can make a script, but we are not talking about an expert user to be using the system. Can't this scenario be thought? We have "normal" people operating the system too. How do you think they will reach the Knowledge for this? They not even have access to the system console. You are closing your mind to main possibilities. I am talking about adding 3000 devices in a system, where these devices, does not need a hostname, it simply needs an IP address for eventual access. Because if we have a hostname like juliocesar.company.com, tomorrow, this device will be deactivated and activated for another customer with another name but the same IP address, and it's an infinite routine, because customers are not eternal, and IP addresses are not infinite. Can you imagine an system where we need advanced user only to use? Do you think Microsoft and Apple would be where they are with a software where only advanced user are able to use? Adam, What is an important device to you? Do you think that a customer side device isn't important to be monitored? How many devices have you ever seen in a network? Have you worked in an ISP? Do you have an Idea of what is to manage device hostnames for, until now, 7 cities? VRF / Arista

Hi, we have two Arista 7150S-64 switches where we use several VRF's. I have enabled VRF in config.php but they are not showing up in the GUI? Any ideas? Have I forgotten to enable something? Regards -John

Observium: Full Page World Map

Observium team, I was playing around with this myself, but my understanding of PHP is quite limited. I hacked something together myself but it doesn't scale well. Would be possible to add a feature to view the Observium world map in full screen mode? I understand that one could easily argue how this feature wouldn't bring much benefit. They wouldn't be wrong. That said, it would still be a nice to have Observium hanging in the NOC on a TV with a full screen map. I think that's originally what you were going for by having a map on the main landing page. I'm just thinking one step further. Just a suggestion. (Please feel free to tell me if I'm just doing it wrong~) Thank you. Frontpage: Eventlog filter

Hi everyone, right now it is possible to filter syslog messages on the frontpage with a statement in config.php: $config['frontpage']['syslog']['priority'] = array('emerg','alert'); // for example I think it would be nice to have something similar for the eventlog. For example to filter interfaces going up/down and interface-throughput: $config['frontpage']['eventlog']['filter'] = array('ifSpeed','ifOperStatus'); Maybe this feature is already implemented and i am not able to find it?! Joseph, The customer premisses equipment (CPE) are managed and accessed internally for monitoring and maintenance of customer internet connection. Customers are not eternal. Can you imagine to a system administrator expends all the day adding hostnames in a DNS Server for at least 10 CPE per day that can be changed 2 days after or a weekend after? Or even adding hostnames in the /etc/hosts for five devices that will be removed after 6 hours? We have system that only needs a screw to be adjusted, and people with the screwdriver in the hand. Are you asking me to search for a screwdriver and reach the screw to be adjusted? All the service providers I know, does not control CPE units with hostnames. They use hostnames for servers, main routers, main switches, and other devices that are usually in the Data Center. Discard out error rate check

Hello, On the 7793 we try to create a check that alert if the interface discards TX errors on our Nexus switch more than 0 per sec. This error is real, we see it on Observium graphs (Device->Port->Error->Discards TX ) and on the switch’s CLI too. We created this check but looks like it doesn’t work: ifOutDiscards_rate notequals 0 We tried it with “gt 1” instead of "notequals 0” without result. :( In an another check the ”ifInErrors_rate” is working, but the ifOutDiscards_rate not. Cannot add Device by IP Address but can by hostname

Hi All, I have many devices in our network that do no have hostnames and nor do I want to maintain DNS records for devices that do as this will be a nightmare to managed. Is there a way I can simply add a whole subnet range to Observium without using hostname? Cheers, Ivan

We often serve temporary events arround, and we need to add this devices for monitoring in somewhere. Now imagine, every weekend, add to host files, IP address to temporary devices. Ok, use always the same IP. Right. In one event we use 5 devices, in another 8. And what if we have 2 or more events at the same time? What if my DNS server, that is a monitored server as well fails? All my monitoring will stop? IP address is faster and more reliable than Hostnames. I would like you to think about adding devices just by hostname. We have 3000 devices on the network that we would like to add. But none of them need registered hostname. For this we have SNMP. They are end devices. They need to be monitored to order history and reports, but do not need DNS Names. Important devices have the hostname on the DNS, but any monitoring services we used before, we added the devices by hostname. IP is faster. That's the problem. It's not once. It's not one time in life. It's not advanced users that only uses the system. Can you think on this scenario? Who uses the information, and who uses the system? Is it necessary to be an system administrator or a network Engineering to uses the system? Or my Help Desk team will be able to add an CPE for monitoring too? It's impossible that only us, as ISP serve temporary events. Don't you think? In my opinion, and it's not hard to implement, you should think in this scenarios. Dear readers, Using Observium quite some time now. And am wondering if the following is possible, I'm asking because after a couple of days of searching for it, I can't find it anywhere. What I would like to have or maybe to be able to execute on Observium is a way so I can view what the incoming and outgoing traffic is for an given month. I am able to view it (and even see the bill options) but not to export it or see the absolute values. (for example 13,33 Gb out 21,65 Gb in) Better Example. For customer X, I want to see what his traffic was for box x from April 1 to April 30. And off course this is with Incoming and outgoing values. If there is already a way to view this data in an easy way and I've missed it. Then sorry for this pointless mail. Regards, Danny op de Dijk

Cron Causing Kayako System Logout and Unable to run Observium Cron simultaneously

Hi All, I having a problem related to Cron Job where if I started my cron job,my kayako will logout me from the system and if I stop the cron job I unable to pulled data for Observium. I had followed Observium on how to set the cron for it to pulled the data as shown inside the Observium page but still the cron will impact Kayako.Every time I started the cron job it will clash as Kayako also running php as well. Actually, the hostname requirement actually finally "inspired" me to get my sh*t together and get a good DNS system running for internal devices, and now everyone else around the office is much happier, they're not having to dog around and do "manual" resolution by asking "what the heck is that IP address again?" If you cannot get DNS records set, or implement some sort of customized DNS server setup, you will have to use /etc/hosts entries (which is basically a custom DNS server setup, just not as elegant/flexible... and its probably somewhat slower when dealing with a lot of addresses). Observium can't resolve an IP to an IP because it isn't a hostname. Host file (and DNS A/AAAA record) lookups don't work "backwards" like that. Also, a hosts file pre-filled with a generically syntaxed hostname for each IP address within any of the subnets which you wish to monitor would pretty much never have to be updated. If you ever have any new IP ranges come into play, you would simply have to append the generic entries for it to the hosts file. What else would there be to manage/maintain? It certainly wouldn't require a full-time role. If you did this, anytime you have a device on an IP without a DNS record, you could add it with the generic hostname. The only other option would be to do some pretty involved patching of your Observium install, which almost assuredly WOULD be a nightmare to maintain. You cannot add devices by IP address. You need to have working DNS resolution, or have host to IP mapping in your /etc/hosts file. Hi all, Been using Observium for a while and love it. We just added a couple of our ESXI 5.1 servers to Observium in the hopes of being able to monitor bandwidth usage on individual VM's and bill against it. It polled the physical NIC's but not the virtual ones. We do have multiple VLAN's too if this makes a difference. Any way to do this? Just complementing, I don't have those IP addresses on the /etc/hosts, not even in a DNS Server. I have added all, apparently by IP address. Hello, I am trying to add some new devices to monitoring, but I am receiving the error Could not resolve 10.251.15.182 I have added the devices with IP 10.251.15.181, 10.251.15.183, But devices 10.251.15.182 and 10.251.15.184 presents the Resolve Error. The server is on the same network. 10.251.15.22 Aparently it's a kind of bug with the interface, that is trying to resolve with the DNS an IP address. This other case, I am not sure, but in a moment, it aparentely to try to add a device, but not sure what message it gives, but it was related to snmp comunity, I guess, and in a second try,it presents the Can not resolve, error. Hi All, Is there a way to share live/active charts for custom OID’s with Global Read Only view users ? I want my User Support team to be able to see a live chart of the Cisco Any connect users I’ve got a Custom OID for; it is a single chart covering all gateway devices specifically for SSL VPN/AnyConnect type connections, it lets us see the distribution of connections across gateways. Hello Everyone, I have been using Observium to monitor a variety of network devices and VMWare ESXi hosts. Observium is doing a great job in gathering all the data from these devices and it is really helpful. I am trying to setup some alerts for disk, cpu and network utilizations but not receiving any emails. Here are some more details.Version: Observium CE 0.16.1.7533 1) I have modified below lines with right email address.// set up alerts $config['alerts']['email']['default'] = "mail(a)example.com"; ## Default alert recipient$config['alerts']['email']['default_only'] = true; ## Only use default recipient$config['alerts']['email']['enable'] = true; ## Disable email alerts as we do not use observium for monitoring but only for metering$config['uptime_warning'] = "86400"; ## Time in seconds to display a "Device Rebooted" warning, defualts to 1 day. Set to 0 to disable warnings.$config['alerts']['port']['ifdown'] = false; ## Generate an alert for ports which enter the ifdown state. 2) Tried sending test mail using ./test_alert.php./test_alert.php -a "some text" 3) Logged in to Web UI, under global settings set all buttons to default under "Use DB" 4) Setup some tests and to trigger alerts and looks like it tried to send some alerts, seeing a time entry under Alerted column. 5) Checked observium log(logs/observium.log) and system logs to see if there were any attempts to send out an email. No entries were found. 6) Observium server is able to send out emails, i have tested it using mailx and sendmail commands, it uses postfix configuration. I am not able to find where the issue is. LDAP users permissions

Hi, Is there any plan to implement LDAP / Active Directory users permission for devices like local users? Currently I do not see any option how to assign for such user from AD just selected list of devices to see. We need to limit people to see just i.e. one divece, or group of devices. Thanks Tibor

Devices showing Down

I managed to get alerts working and its great. I did have a few questions though. Ideally, I'd like it if there were nothing in red on the dashboard (as if there are issues). [image: Inline image 1] Observium says I have a port down and 1 alert failed. However, all alerts are either OK or suppressed. Ports are either on and in use or disabled. There is nothing that shows in those lists. Any reason why it says that something is down? Your help is appreciated. Poller Overruns

Hi We are currently running OBSERVIUM Professional Ed with 31 Cisco 7600/3560/2960 polling around 5000+ ports. The Traffic graphs are showing gaps as the poller seems to be taking a lot of time. We have tried different values for the poller wrapper threads (16, 32, 48, 64) on a 16 core/64GB RAM machine but not seen any improvement. We have also tried different values for the 'ma-rep' field for snmp bulkwalk (5, 10 etc) - had seen improvement initially after enabling with 5, but the polling times seem to have increased automatically after some time. We are currently running with 64 Poller threads and max-rep 10. Pls suggest if we are missing something. A few screen-shots are attached. BGP modul question

Hello We use the PE 7703 version and we would like to use the BGP modul for our Cisco ASR 9001 router. On the Observium / Routing tab we see the OSPF connections but there is no BGP section. We hard-enabled the BGP in the config.php ($config['enable_bgp'] = 1;) but it doesn’t help. All of BGP related mysql tables are empty. What we did wrong? :) Thanks Laszlo

mounting a new filesystem

Hi all, Apologies if this has been asked before, or I've missed it in the list; I recently added a new drive to a server, and mounted the new drive to a directory. Edited output. root@tethys:~# df -h Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on rootfs 85G 2.4G 79G 3% / /dev/sdb1 148G 2.8G 138G 2% /netflow As you can see in the screenshot below, it shows the root directory ~2.5GB, but not the /netflow dir which is at 2.8GB. [image: Inline image 1] Am I missing something here ? I assume I should be seeing 2 lines, 1 for / and 1 for /netflow as they are different disks. Alert Conditions - Check Conditions

Hi, I'm trying to setup an Alert for monitoring Fortigate Sessions. For testing I have a Check Condition of "fortigate_sessions gt 100" The issue I am finding is that the check is matching again percentage and not value. The fortigate has 200 sessions currently, so it should trigger the alert, but it doesn't because it seems to be monitoring percentage and the percentage is constantly 100% How do I check against the value of 200 instead of percentage? Hi! I get this error when enabling libvirt. I created a dev instance (CE: 0.16.1.7533 ) to investigate the wmi / win2k8 unknown processor issue. This correctly shows the processor but doesn't auto login with " AuthBasicFake guest guest" in the apache conf like the production one does. to setup : cp config.php.default config.php sed -i -e s:USERNAME:observium: -e s:PASSWORD:xxxxx: -e 's:"public":"xxxxxxxxx", "public":' config.php (added fping location and proxy info to config.php) ./discovery.php -u ./adduser.php admin xxxx 10 ./adduser.php guest guest 5 ./add_device.php $HOSTNAME going to https://observium.dev.gov.au, i can login as either guest or admin and see everything correctly. I added "AuthBasicFake guest guest" to the apache config and restarted apache. but it won't login automagically. problem with overall traffic view

hello, I found a little problem (maybe not a bug, but I think is not so good). if I use "overall_traffic" aggregation (ie for peering) observium make a graph with stacking the traffic from all the ports with a description starting with a label (ie "peering:"), and it works ok. but if I modify a port (ie dismiss a peering, removing also the "peering:" label from the router interface) observium remove all the pregress traffic the old interface did from the 'peering' graph, so you lose part of the old stats :-( isn't it possible to have the overall_traffic collected in a dedicated rrd, use the sum of labelled interfaces for new data and use the rrd data for the old data in order to have a real historic data even if I change a port? thanks -- bye, emilio

Printer toner alert

Hi All! I'm fairly new with the alerts, so don't hit me too hard. :) I'm trying to create an alert checker for some printers, it should send an alert when the toner level is below 5%. The associations seem OK, at least my Device Match rule "|type equals printer|" (with an "*" entity match) yields all the printers in Observium. But the condition rule seems suspect to me. Based on the documentation and the examples I wrote: |"supply_value lt 5%" |but it shows everything OK on all printers, despite of having at least 3 printers with 1% toner cartridge. Could you help me, what am I doing wrong, or what's missing? Btw: I'm using the latest CE version. Should I include some more information? Regards, Tylla

Dear all, I’d like to put a filter on “Recent Events” section of the dashboard, but I could not find any information regarding that. Now the section is too chatty, for example I see lots of these messages: Et140/1/48 Interface changed: [ifDuplex] '' -> ‘unknown’ or Et141/1/39 Interface changed: [ifDuplex] '' -> 'fullDuplex' But what I’d like to see is when an interface goes up and down, and hide not important messages if possible. Tried to add a device via web-interface, result is: Could not resolve 192.168.0.2 And I can not add any device at all. When I tried to execute ./bind locally all but blank... Finally, inside the device properties on your observium server, you need to indicate the telnet port (36602) on the appropriate agent page, as well as enable the unix_agent function on the modules page. It’s really a much better idea to enable that only on a device-by-device basis as opposed to global enablement in the config.php file. Also, it’s worth changing directly to the /usr/lib/observium_agent/local directory and executing each script manually, this will determine if all the dependencies for each script are actually installed. For example, I use the ntpd monitoring script on my servers, and I don’t always have php installed on every server… so when I run the ./ntpd script, it kicks out an error that php isn’t installed. Duh, “apt-get php5-cli”, then I run the ntpd script again, and now I have valid data. I personally use nsd and unbound for authoritative and client lookups respectively instead of bind, so don’t have any experience with that bind script specifically. Unix-Agent Not Working

Guys, We've installed the Unix-Agent today on a DNS server in the hope of have Observium monitor bind. We've followed what documentation we could fine placing the Observium-agent and bind application in /usr/lib/Observium-agent/local and chmod -x all files We've tested via telnet on 36602 from the Observium machine and it returns the data however Observium does not report any application after polling the server. (Not)Ignored Ports

Hi, It looks like ignored ports are suddenly being included in the 'Device Status Notifications' for Errors. We have quite a few devices which have 'expected' errors (half-duplex IP-PDUs etc.) so are now being spammed with error'ed ports: They _do_ disappear if I select the device itself to be ignored, but they used to be silenced just by setting the 'Alerts' column to 'No'. Is this an error - or is there now an intentional new variable which I need to set in config.php to ignore them? Cheers guys! Hi guys, I am using the professional edition of Observium. Everything works fine but I'm stuck at a certain point. Let me explain more exactly. We added a Cisco Wireless Controller (AIR-CT5508-K9) to observium. On this Cisco device there are some SSID's. So in Observium you can see under Cisco WC - Graphs - Wireless ONE GRAPH for the wireless clients traffic (for all SSID's). Is there a way to display the traffic graph separately for individual SSID's? The Wireless Controller delivers the OID's for the SSID's, but the question is how to implement them. Siegfried

Monitor IPMI availability

Hello! I'm wondering if there is a way to monitor the presence / availability of the IPMI module in Observium. Most if the servers are SuperMicro. I'm able to poll temperatures, fan speed and etc. through IPMI, but is there a way to receive an alert when IPMI module is not reachable (client often remove the cable to the interface by mistake, or some network issue) the same as I receive alerts for server down, port down. Adding an OS

Dear Observium, My apologies if this is not posted to the right place— this question must have been covered many times but the archives of this list don’t seem to be accessible. I am looking for how to add an OS for our devices ( https://www.metamako.com ). I found this documentation ( http://www.observium.org/docs/developing/add_os/ <http://www.observium.org/docs/developing/add_os/> ) but it seems to be out of date, since there doesn’t appear to be an includes/definitions/os.inc.php file. There’s a definitions.dat file, but this is a binary. Any assistance would be much appreciated. Do I need to be paid up for the subscription edition to make contributions? Issue wih temperature reporting from Dell 7000 series switch

Hi All There's a small problem with temperature reporting from the Dell 7000 (specifically 7048 in this case) switch. The device page reports the stack unit internal temperature multiple times (I'd estimate >100), none of which look correct: I've copied and pasted the top and bottom of the reports, to show the way three of them read 0. The current firmware version is 5.1.8.2 - It was also present on the previous version of switch firmware we were running (from memory something like 5.1.0.1). I'd presume this is the result of the Dell SNMP response, but is there any kind of a workaround available? The devices web interface does report at least plausible temperature values, so it's unlikely to be a failing sensor. This is on the current CE, but was also present on the previous CE. Run Alerts Checks

Hi, Is it possible to run the alert checks outside of the normal poll cycle? I have a simple perl script that receives SNMP traps and calls the snmptrap.php observium script and the interface is correctly marked down/up but the alert does not happen until the next poll cycle. Thanks, Kevin

APC PDU alert question

Hello I have some APC PDU with two lines of plugs. The name of the first row of plugs are: "Bank 1" and the second row's name is Bank 2. The two banks have a summarized current value, this is the "Bank Total". I would like to create an alert for the Bank 1 and Bank 2 (if the current ge 7 send an alert) but not for Bank Total. Issues getting the unix-agent to work

After setting up my target host per instructions, I get this error: [2016/04/10 04:26:47 +0000] poller.php(6436): UNIX-AGENT: Connection on tcp://gitserver:33602 failed. ERROR: 111 Connection refused Selinux is disabled, firewall is disabled. I tried searching the mailing list archives but all I get is a 'not found' error. My server is running on CentOs7. I also tried Ubuntu14. My clients vary from Fedora, Centos7, and Ubuntu. I appreciate any and all assistance offered. Lewis
