Good morning Maybe this is a silly question, if so sorry for disturbs If we collect performance data for almost 20k devices and we're interested in perform trend estimations with data for last 12months, does observium implement any aggregation method in order to avoid have an unmanageable amount of performance data stored?, if so, can you point me out to the proper place where i can find some information that can help me to understand the way this work is done? Authentication Failure

Hello Adam, I have found wired behavior with Observium, may be it is my configuration mistake or I am not sure. My issue, I am used login Observium GUI using admin user. After some days, when I try to login with observium I am getting authentication failed. Here I have not changed in configuration. This is happened, 3 times in last 1 month. Every time I used to rebuild the Observium. Please suggest a solution and let me know if you want any information. Regards, sathish

Hello, Is it possible to create an view of the used vlan's in the complete environment? Now we can only see the vlan's configured on the different devices? If it is possible I like to see the vlan's to the different devices where it is used on and perhaps we can use a hyperlink to that device. Stageing and live area

Quick question to people who may know this bit of information regarding the license. We have as company an official version of Observium. We would like to know how many time we can install the software with that key. The reason is we would like to have a operational live situation and a testing area for new devices codes etc.... Custom MIBs

Hi, We are using Sophos UTM (Astaro) appliance, but it's currently not supported by Observium by default. What is correct process to request adding support for additional MIBs? I didn't find simple answer if it's possible somehow just add MIB file to observium without developing. Thanks

Problem with RRD spikes

Dear readers, As of a couple of months now we are the happy users of Observium. And after a lot of tweaking and tunning we have a great tool monitoring our network and all of its devices. Still there are some issues we still can't work out or find any information about on the net. I'll describe as best as I can wat I want to fix. On the Observium site there is a section called Miscellaneous with a need trick to irradicate those RDD spikes. The code to use on the command line is as follow: for i in rrd/*/*.rrd; do scripts/removespikes.pl $i; done; And when I execute this code on de command line of Observium (Via Putty) I'm only getting an error message saying: -bash: scripts/removespikes.pl: Permission denied And this message a couple of times over and over again. After a short whil it stopes and nothing has been done to the spikes on the tables of Observium. So natuarly my question is what am I doing wrong, or better what file or folder hasn't got the right rights for me to execute this command. It would be very helpful if these kind of information or any kind of information was availible on the Observium website, but it isn't. And I'm very doudfull it will ever happen. So if anyone has somekind of solution it would be very helpfull. Hi all, is it possible to make the location menu nested without using geocodes? Approximateley like the geocodes are managed... For example: Switch A: snmp location "Building 1, Floor 2, Room 23" Switch B: snmp location "Building 1, Floor 2, Room 23" Switch C: snmp location "Building 1, Floor 1, Room 42" Locations ------- Building 1 -> Floor 1 -> Room 42 (2 devices) -> Floor 2 -> Room 23 (1 device) Building X ... Installed Observium 0.16.1.7533 Custom-Default in Config not working?

Hello all, I have two installs and one works fine but the other that installed the exact same way shows the Custom and Defualt settings in Global Settings at the same time. You cannot click on them to change from Default to Custom. I installed the same exact way this week, but the one I installed last week works fine. Any thoughts? 'Arch -> Extension' repeating in Eventlog

Hi, Got a weird issue with one device, it's running Ubuntu 14.04.1 / 3.19.0-56 and is continuously reporting a change of Architecture (to an invalid name) on every poll. Event log for the device below: The device details show this (although without an 'n'): I have no idea what could be so unique about this device, we have plenty of systems running this OS/version and no others reporting this issue. It's a pretty basic build, environmental monitoring box. It appears to be being written by the Unix-Agent module, but I'm not clear why. I've attached the debug of the agent module which shows it setting the Arch, but, I don't understand where it gets it from in the first place? Any ideas most welcome - Cheers! Hello 2 questions, 1st the link on the site to the mailing list archive produces a 404, is there an updated link to review the archive available? 2nd Does a way exist to change the given port name, or to add a description to a port? We have many switches we monitor and it would be very helpful to add a description or change extend a name of a port, so we could instantly know , this port is related to workstation A101 or server B101, or Access point8, and so on. Nexus FEX power, fan and current datas?

Hello We are monitoring some Nexus 5K with FEX and some Cisco ASR 9000. We get lot of datas from ASR (power, fan speed etc etc) but not from the Nexus FEX modules. The FEX (and Nexus 5K) reports only just the temperature in the latest CE. Of course i get every enviromnent datas in CLI from the switch. Now we faced with a PSU faliure in a FEX, but i am not able to create a check becase no datas about it. In the near future can we get more datas from Nexus and FEX datas too? Thanks Laszlo

Blank page after messing with php

I have a small install on CentOS 6. I saw the message in the web interface about the php version, so I tried updating it from 5.3.3 to 5.6. I got a blank page after that. I found the tip about editing php.ini to set memory_limit = 1024M but that didn't work. I removed 5.6 and went back to 5.3.3 and made the php.ini edit again, but no luck. (Full system restart after each change) What should I look at before I decide this is the excuse I need to wipe the whole thing and go to CentOS 7?

Modify reported Custom OID Values?

Hello, I am pretty new to Observium and really love it. Right now I am adding some Custom OIDs from our devices. We are using these devices to log the power usage of our housing customers: http://www.hw-group.com/products/HWg-PWR/hwg-pwr25_M-bus_gateway_en.html There is a small problem with the reported power usage. The device reports the values a hundred times higher than they are supposed to be, e.g. 100 kWh when in fact it should be 1 kWh. Is there a way I can divide the polled values before they are stored? If not could you please add such a feature? I was able to do this in WhatsUp Gold, but I want to get rid of it :) Thanks in advance. Regards, Siegfried

Alcatel OmniStack 6224 --> Aruba device - ArubaOS

Hi Adam and all I'm trying Observium in a test environment, using some different network devices, and I found the following issue. The Alcatel OmniStack 6224 switch is reported by Observium as an Aruba device running ArubaOS. Selecting it on the GUI, the following banner appears: "Device not yet discovered This device has not yet been successfully discovered. System information and statistics will not be populated and graphs will not draw. This device should be automatically discovered within 10 minutes." ...but devices was added some days ago. Here enclosed a picture to better understand the problem. Is the Alcatel 6224 switch unsupported/partially supported, or there are some configuration issues to identify and solve? Recommendation to support 20K devices on observium

Netapp missing network data

Hi, I have a Netapp in cluster mode that I have added to Observium. It only display volume usage but no disk or network usage. Is it because the code expect a mode 7 device ? According to this document http://www.netapp.com/us/media/tr-4220.pdf (Table 27) it should expose some network stuff. I tried the .1.3.6.1.4.1.789.1.22.1 oid and it indeed returns data. I have attached discovery, poller and the snmpwalk of the OID mentioned. Best regards, Louis

multi site support?

hey, currently we are using cacti to collect snmp data but your solutions looks much better :) Currently we are collecting data from all our customers into one centralized system on one of our servers. Would it be possible to have some kind of "multi site" installation with observium to give our customers access to their data? We dont want to setup Observium for each of our customers, but want them to be able to have a look at the current state their systems. I could not find any documentation about this feature, is is possible? Ethernet Service Instance Interface Names Truncated

Am I imagining things, or did Observium previously correctly display Ethernet service instance interfaces in the GUI? I've noticed recently that all the interfaces names for service instance interfaces seem to be truncated in a few of the views Picture speaks a thousand words, where these show GigabitEthernet0/16. now, I am sure they previously would have been listed as GigabitEthernet0/16.ServiceInstance.1234 etc; [image: Inline images 1] [image: Inline images 4] Discovery debug example from the device shows the interfaces captured as the full name: ( [ifDescr] => GigabitEthernet0/1.ServiceInstance.206 [ifAlias] => Description [ifName] => Gi0/1.SI.206 [ifType] => l2vlan [ifOperStatus] => up ) If you search in the ports for for the full interface name it knows it as the right thing; [image: Inline images 2] Looks like the GUI just truncates the names? Obviously this makes it harder than it should be to identify the correct interface in the list. Any chance we can have this show the whole thing? :) Thanks, Tim C

SNMP access via poller issues

Guys, Overnight we received a lot of alerts for device going offline however these were false positives. We've found that the poller is having issues connecting to some devices. Brocade ICX Switch Cisco 2900 series RouterOS SNMP is working via snmpwalk on the machine running obs and also from other test locations however the poller times out on them. We've reset the configuration for the devices in obs however access still fails. Access appears to come and go. We've confirmed obs is up to date and have rebooted the services. Housekeeping - invalid RRD files

The instructions for the housekeeping script mention the cleanup of invalid RRD files and that doing so "requires $config['file'] to be set correctly to the path of the file magic utility." I can't find any reference to $config['file'], magic file utilities, etc. in the default config.php, my current config.php, or anywhere online, mailing list archives, etc. What is this in reference to? It doesn't seem to be set anywhere. Did I miss something? Consequently, whenever I run `housekeeping.php -r` with that option defaulted to TRUE, the process hangs and doesn't seem to do anything. Setting it to FALSE immediately deletes stale RRD files (by time via $config['housekeeping']['rrd']['age'] = timeInSeconds;) and completes the process. I checked housekeeping.log and there are no entries for 'invalid' (what I assume an invalid RRD file would log based on the rrd.inc.php module) and my log file goes back to 2014, so I know I’m not missing something that has rotated out. I'm running 0.16.3.7663 for reference.

backup script for db, config.php, rrd/

Hi all, I spent my Sunday afternoon (on-call, luckily quiet though :) writing this backup script for Observium. It takes a backup destination directory and number of backups to keep using rotation which is 0 by default. Then it makes a tmp directory. It copies config.php there, does a mysql dump, and copies rrd/ into the tmp directory. It tars up the tmp directory into a tarball in the backup directory and deletes the tmp directory. It is meant to run from the scripts/ directory, it maybe isnt as polished as the other main scripts or compatible with all systems because of different options with the commands it runs. Its working for me though on my Ubuntu 14.04 test system. Please offer suggestions! Thanks. -Nick

Changing the Mysql connections graph format

Hi, I found the Mysql connections graph a little difficult to read. So I changed it to use lines instead of stacked area. It is still not perfect because of the huge scale imposed by drawing the maximum number of connection and maximum number of connection reached. But at least you can actually read the value of your spikes of connections instead of working out the difference between the number of connection + max number of connection reached. Howto Integrate observium alerts with external event monitoring tool

good morning everyone, We're evaluating to use observium as our hardware monitoring solution for some datacenters, but we need to clearly understand how can we integrate the generated alerts in the tool with external event monitoring solutions that are the ones used by our Operation Center guys. I guess that we can run queries against the mysql table hosting such events, is there any other possibilities? Maybe interact with mysql DB is the recommended way, that way can any of you share with me the data model of such table? Avoid adding round robin dns devices

Hi, I have some devices that are configured with a round robin DNS entry. I believe that as we are running lldp on servers too, the auto discovery pick them up and add them. But as the picture below shows, this is pretty much useless as each polling end up on a different server. (You can see that the sysdescr and sysname contains contradictory data : lxfer01 and lxfer02) Would it be possible to detect that the FQDN is a round robin alias and avoid adding it as a new device ? And it would be perfect if it could be the same for CNAME as well, as it is not really worthwhile having Observium polling a node for each of its aliases. Hi All, Some week ago i wrote a mail because we found an alert bug and we got lot of mails (in every 5. minutes) instead of just 1 in 24 hours. This Observium was an updated from the 2015.07 CE to the latest (CE.0.16.1.7533). We thougth that the problem was because of the upgrade process and the alert function was new and something went bad.... Now i made a clear install of the latest Observium CE from .tgz. I added only one host, add the same alert, and i’m receiving again the alerts mail in every 5. minutes. I didn’t touch any file just the config.php because of the SQL access of the Observium! I added a host (emaussw01). It is a Cisco Nexus device with 7 FEX modules. I see the temperatures of FEXs (4 values from every FEX) all is under 50C but not one module. This module are the "FEX-111 Module-1 Die-1". This is over 50C. Alert Checks on Observium reports device down when they are actually not

Hi Team, I have setup the following Alert on my Observium device. See attachment (Alert_DeviceDown). I sometimes get the alerts that the device is down . See attachment (Devices_Down). However, the devices were actually not down. So most likely it is the Server on which Observium is install, do not get a ping response from the switch(device we monitoring). I ran MTR tests between the Observium server and switch in question, I don't see any packet losses, but I do see average RTT of 0.2 ms and worst RTT as 3.8 ms. So, is it possible when Observium does not get a ping response from the switch in the desirable amount of time, it marks it DOWN. How this desirable amount is calculated. Is there way we can edit this? Or is there any other recommended way for monitoring the devices? Thanks! After upgrade, all seemed well until my disk filled up. db.log contains countless entries about unknown columns. A couple examples are below. Observium-Rancid Integration

Hello All, I have integrated the rancid with observium. In the initial stage for 2 days it worked well, backup are pulled as per cronjob. After some days, I observed backup are happening few devices rest are shown in GUI. However, when I checked the status in /var/lib/rancid/observium/configs/ the backup files are successfully taken And when checked the rancid logs in /var/log/rancid/ I have seen for few devices (which shown in GUI) the Sending configs/xxxx Sending configs/yyyy Transmitting file data .. Committed revision 216. NOTE: The list varies from time to time. Please suggest what could be the issue and solution if any. Regards, sathish

Cannot add CAB 4+ printer

I'm working for a small company in the floral sector. We have several types of printers. From conventional multifunctionals to label printers (CAB, Zebra). I can add the Zebra printers, but not the cab printers. It appears that Observium is looking for objects with a different suffix. I searched around the site and did some Googling. But I was not able to sort this out myself. Alerts rrd in wrong directory

Hi all, I just noticed that the rrd for my alerts have been created in the root rrd directoy instead of in each device directory. Is this a known issue ? How to add a custom alert or web site health check in Observium

Greetings, My office recently purchased Observium and we really enjoy the server stats on CPU, memory and storage. It appears that I can set up other health checks as well but I was not able to find any examples in the HTML help files. What I would like to do is write a simple shell script that returns one of three values: information, warning, and critical and have Observium act on that value with an alert (on warnings and critical error codes). RANCID integration in Observium on a RHEL like OS

Hi, I'm trying to integrate RANCID in an Observium server installed on top of a Scientific Linux 6.6. So far I found this documentation for ubuntu: http://www.observium.org/docs/rancid/ I somehow "replaced by" what was necessary such as apt-get by yum and www-data by apache. Though I'm not able to see the "Config" tab in my observium web pages. Am I missing some specific steps for RHEL or it is just not meant to work under RHEL? Many thanks in advance! Cheers, Shkelzen

How to add a custom alert or web site health check in Observium

Greetings, My office recently purchased Observium and we really enjoy the server stats on CPU, memory and storage. It appears that I can set up other health checks as well but I was not able to find any examples in the HTML help files. What I would like to do is write a simple shell script that returns one of three values: information, warning, and critical and have Observium act on that value with an alert (on warnings and critical error codes). IPMI fan speed as percent

Hi all, I have some devices for which the fan speed reported over IPMI is in percent. As the current ipmi_unit is “RPM” they were ignored. Thinking that it could be an easy tweak I just added a definition for percent in includes/definitions/sensors.inc.php $config['ipmi_unit']['percent'] = 'fanspeed'; This makes the detection and polling work but the graphs are messed up as they expect RPMs (kind of make sense eh). I believe that the fan sensors code is not designed to accommodate different units. So I come for advice on how to tackle this one. Is there a sensors that already work with percent ? Device showing interface error cleared long ago

Hi, I have a device which is always showing an interface error which was previous to the Observium installation. I cleared the error on the switch and it did not reproduce. However Observium is showing it every day I check. I've tried to delete the device and adding it back and it show the error again. After upgrading to the latests CE it is the same. DOM optic sensor graphs always rounded to 0W

Hi, Currently running: 0.16.1.7533 (26th January 2016) We’ve noticed the DOM optic power sensor data to be graphed at 0W all the time. Noticing the ‘value’ figure is correct on the optic’s power status page, we subsequently found all data in the RRD to be correct. eg:  <row><v>6.1840000000e-04</v></row>  <row><v>6.1300000000e-04</v></row>  <row><v>6.1435000000e-04</v></row> It just seems the rrdtool graph function is not rendering this sensor data with anything useful. Creating group with ifInOctets_perc

Hi, Seems that I can’t create a group that uses ifInOctets_perc for its entity match ? Is this because of a reason/bug or I am doing it stupidly ? My alert checker is working fine and I was able to create a group with ifOperStatus. They are both in the Mettrics category so I expected them to work the same way. Panasas support

Hi, I have a few Panasas devices that (not surprisingly) Observium doesn’t handle very well. It basically only get the uptime out of it. The devices are similar to this : http://www.panasas.com/products/activestor-16-18 I have attached debug discovery, poller and snmpwalk of the top tree and enterprise parts. I also have attached the mibs from the device (retrieved from the device itself) and a logo (retrieved from http://www.panasas.com/news/press-room ) It looks like there is very little in the standard places and every interesting thing has been shoved into the enterprise tree. Do you think it is possible to add support for these devices ? Filtering ports/devices

Does anybody know of a syntax that will allow multiple matches when filtering on device hostnames? I'm specifically on the all ports page. We've smashed two separate networks together and there are different naming conventions in use. When I want to look at only one side of the network, it would be easy if I could match all devices starting with p, s or m-. The hostname field doesn't seem to accept regex, nor does it accept "or" statements. Is there a solution to this? Cheers, Michael

Alerts based on RRD averages?

Hi all, I'm curious if it is possible to create an alert that considers an RRD average? For example, if I want to generate an alert that looks at the average utilization of a port over a 24 hour period, and if the average bit rate or percentage is greater than X, send an alert? I have been working with alerts that trigger based on a percentage, but if the port drops below that mark for even a short period of time (minutes, perhaps even an hour or two), the clock resets. That's proving troublesome. Any suggestions? Thanks, -- Stephen

HP mfp m527 and mfp m577 printers

Greetings, We've just purchased both of these printers. I've started monitoring them with Observium, but all I see under Inventory are the printer itself (hrDevicePrinter) and the printer's hard disk (hrDeviceDiskStorage). Have I missed doing something, or are these printers just not supported? This is by no means urgent. I've never tried to monitor a printer before and I just wanted to see what Observium told me about them. Hi everyone, Today I've upgraded a CE Observium from 0.15.6 to 0.16.1 and it broke. It only shows DB schema not installed. Possible bug

Hi all, We are using a customized location rewrite function to split the SNMP location of devices into a human readable and a machine understandable format. We are using the community edition, and on updating to the recent version we were faced with thIS error message: PHP Fatal error: Cannot redeclare custom_rewrite_location() (previously declared in /opt/observium/config.php:87) in /opt/observium/config.php on line 102 This is a common error when a php file is included/required more than once, so I made a workaround by renaming config.php to config.user.php and using require_once() in the original config.php to load these directives (it needs absolute path otherways it cannot find the file). Shouldn't require_once/include_once be used in all the places where referencing config.php? Br, Tylla,

Observium syslog year -0001

Lately (Since last CE update, I think) I've been seeing syslog messages for my Cisco router with a date stamp of "-0001-11-30" with text reading just something like "1:1". A little searching reveals that there was a mail list post from July 2014 for the same thing happening with Netgear equipment, but the only way I could see that post was through Google's cached result, and I can't find any replies. Is anyone else getting this? Known issue, perhaps?
