Hi All, Some week ago i wrote a mail because we found an alert bug and we got lot of mails (in every 5. minutes) instead of just 1 in 24 hours. This Observium was an updated from the 2015.07 CE to the latest (CE.0.16.1.7533). We thougth that the problem was because of the upgrade process and the alert function was new and something went bad.... Now i made a clear install of the latest Observium CE from .tgz. I added only one host, add the same alert, and i’m receiving again the alerts mail in every 5. minutes. I didn’t touch any file just the config.php because of the SQL access of the Observium! I added a host (emaussw01). It is a Cisco Nexus device with 7 FEX modules. I see the temperatures of FEXs (4 values from every FEX) all is under 50C but not one module. This module are the "FEX-111 Module-1 Die-1". This is over 50C. Alert Checks on Observium reports device down when they are actually not

Hi Team, I have setup the following Alert on my Observium device. See attachment (Alert_DeviceDown). I sometimes get the alerts that the device is down . See attachment (Devices_Down). However, the devices were actually not down. So most likely it is the Server on which Observium is install, do not get a ping response from the switch(device we monitoring). I ran MTR tests between the Observium server and switch in question, I don't see any packet losses, but I do see average RTT of 0.2 ms and worst RTT as 3.8 ms. So, is it possible when Observium does not get a ping response from the switch in the desirable amount of time, it marks it DOWN. How this desirable amount is calculated. Is there way we can edit this? Or is there any other recommended way for monitoring the devices? Thanks! CE-edition; Sorting of Health-status columns?

Is it a design-choice to not being able to sort by columns in the Health page? As in ... Sort ascending/decending by Memory Usage, Toner usage, CPU etc. This is CE edition. -- Pål R.

db.log full after upgrade to Observium CE 0.16.1.7533

After upgrade, all seemed well until my disk filled up. db.log contains countless entries about unknown columns. A couple examples are below. I completed the schema update and full discovery at the end of the upgrade process per: http://www.observium.org/docs/updating/ <http://www.observium.org/docs/updating/>. Rerunning discovery.php -u says my schema is up to date. But something isn’t right. Is there a way to force the schema update to run again? Perhaps that will install all the missing columns? Observium-Rancid Integration

Hello All, I have integrated the rancid with observium. In the initial stage for 2 days it worked well, backup are pulled as per cronjob. After some days, I observed backup are happening few devices rest are shown in GUI. However, when I checked the status in /var/lib/rancid/observium/configs/ the backup files are successfully taken And when checked the rancid logs in /var/log/rancid/ I have seen for few devices (which shown in GUI) the Sending configs/xxxx Sending configs/yyyy Transmitting file data .. Committed revision 216. NOTE: The list varies from time to time. Please suggest what could be the issue and solution if any. Regards, sathish

Cannot add CAB 4+ printer

I'm working for a small company in the floral sector. We have several types of printers. From conventional multifunctionals to label printers (CAB, Zebra). I can add the Zebra printers, but not the cab printers. It appears that Observium is looking for objects with a different suffix. I searched around the site and did some Googling. But I was not able to sort this out myself. Alerts rrd in wrong directory

Hi all, I just noticed that the rrd for my alerts have been created in the root rrd directoy instead of in each device directory. Is this a known issue ? I know this was brought up on numerous occasions in the past (I tried accessing the archive but had no luck with the link so my apologies and haven't been on the listserv in about 6 months) but are there any other methods to pay for the professional version ? How to add a custom alert or web site health check in Observium

Greetings, My office recently purchased Observium and we really enjoy the server stats on CPU, memory and storage. It appears that I can set up other health checks as well but I was not able to find any examples in the HTML help files. What I would like to do is write a simple shell script that returns one of three values: information, warning, and critical and have Observium act on that value with an alert (on warnings and critical error codes). RANCID integration in Observium on a RHEL like OS

Hi, I'm trying to integrate RANCID in an Observium server installed on top of a Scientific Linux 6.6. So far I found this documentation for ubuntu: http://www.observium.org/docs/rancid/ I somehow "replaced by" what was necessary such as apt-get by yum and www-data by apache. How to add a custom alert or web site health check in Observium

Greetings, My office recently purchased Observium and we really enjoy the server stats on CPU, memory and storage. It appears that I can set up other health checks as well but I was not able to find any examples in the HTML help files. What I would like to do is write a simple shell script that returns one of three values: information, warning, and critical and have Observium act on that value with an alert (on warnings and critical error codes). IPMI fan speed as percent

Hi all, I have some devices for which the fan speed reported over IPMI is in percent. As the current ipmi_unit is “RPM” they were ignored. Thinking that it could be an easy tweak I just added a definition for percent in includes/definitions/sensors.inc.php $config['ipmi_unit']['percent'] = 'fanspeed'; This makes the detection and polling work but the graphs are messed up as they expect RPMs (kind of make sense eh). I believe that the fan sensors code is not designed to accommodate different units. So I come for advice on how to tackle this one. Is there a sensors that already work with percent ? Device showing interface error cleared long ago

Hi, I have a device which is always showing an interface error which was previous to the Observium installation. I cleared the error on the switch and it did not reproduce. However Observium is showing it every day I check. I've tried to delete the device and adding it back and it show the error again. After upgrading to the latests CE it is the same. Maybe this has persisted in the DB, I don't know... Does anyone has any hint for this behaviour? Thanks in advance and best regards, Pau

DOM optic sensor graphs always rounded to 0W

Hi, Currently running: 0.16.1.7533 (26th January 2016) We’ve noticed the DOM optic power sensor data to be graphed at 0W all the time. Noticing the ‘value’ figure is correct on the optic’s power status page, we subsequently found all data in the RRD to be correct. eg:  <row><v>6.1840000000e-04</v></row>  <row><v>6.1300000000e-04</v></row>  <row><v>6.1435000000e-04</v></row> It just seems the rrdtool graph function is not rendering this sensor data with anything useful. Creating group with ifInOctets_perc

Hi, Seems that I can’t create a group that uses ifInOctets_perc for its entity match ? Is this because of a reason/bug or I am doing it stupidly ? My alert checker is working fine and I was able to create a group with ifOperStatus. They are both in the Mettrics category so I expected them to work the same way. Panasas support

Hi, I have a few Panasas devices that (not surprisingly) Observium doesn’t handle very well. It basically only get the uptime out of it. The devices are similar to this : http://www.panasas.com/products/activestor-16-18 I have attached debug discovery, poller and snmpwalk of the top tree and enterprise parts. I also have attached the mibs from the device (retrieved from the device itself) and a logo (retrieved from http://www.panasas.com/news/press-room ) It looks like there is very little in the standard places and every interesting thing has been shoved into the enterprise tree. Do you think it is possible to add support for these devices ? Filtering ports/devices

Does anybody know of a syntax that will allow multiple matches when filtering on device hostnames? I'm specifically on the all ports page. We've smashed two separate networks together and there are different naming conventions in use. When I want to look at only one side of the network, it would be easy if I could match all devices starting with p, s or m-. The hostname field doesn't seem to accept regex, nor does it accept "or" statements. Is there a solution to this? Cheers, Michael

Alerts based on RRD averages?

Hi all, I'm curious if it is possible to create an alert that considers an RRD average? For example, if I want to generate an alert that looks at the average utilization of a port over a 24 hour period, and if the average bit rate or percentage is greater than X, send an alert? I have been working with alerts that trigger based on a percentage, but if the port drops below that mark for even a short period of time (minutes, perhaps even an hour or two), the clock resets. Greetings, We've just purchased both of these printers. I've started monitoring them with Observium, but all I see under Inventory are the printer itself (hrDevicePrinter) and the printer's hard disk (hrDeviceDiskStorage). Have I missed doing something, or are these printers just not supported? This is by no means urgent. I've never tried to monitor a printer before and I just wanted to see what Observium told me about them. Hi all, We are using a customized location rewrite function to split the SNMP location of devices into a human readable and a machine understandable format. We are using the community edition, and on updating to the recent version we were faced with thIS error message: PHP Fatal error: Cannot redeclare custom_rewrite_location() (previously declared in /opt/observium/config.php:87) in /opt/observium/config.php on line 102 This is a common error when a php file is included/required more than once, so I made a workaround by renaming config.php to config.user.php and using require_once() in the original config.php to load these directives (it needs absolute path otherways it cannot find the file). Shouldn't require_once/include_once be used in all the places where referencing config.php? Br, Tylla,

Observium syslog year -0001

Lately (Since last CE update, I think) I've been seeing syslog messages for my Cisco router with a date stamp of "-0001-11-30" with text reading just something like "1:1". A little searching reveals that there was a mail list post from July 2014 for the same thing happening with Netgear equipment, but the only way I could see that post was through Google's cached result, and I can't find any replies. Is anyone else getting this? Known issue, perhaps?

Export/import hosts

Hello, Because we have a problem with the alerts (if i set up an alert the Observium send an alert in every 5 minutes instead of 1 alert / 24 hour ) i decided to reinstall the Observium (First i installed the 201506(?) CE and updated it to CE 0.16.1.7533) So the question is can i export the hosts and import back after the reinstall procedure? Currently i have more than 50 hosts, so it is faster if i can just do an export/import instead of add all host again…. Thanks Laszlo

losing device information after adding IP SLA

Hi, We have a few devices in our Observium installation which lost some sensor en memory pools during discovery. See below. It looks like the problem started around 5 days ago. [cid:image004.png@01D16E44.AA924840] It looks like that after enabling a new IP SLA config on a new device, and running a discovery, first the new IP SLA entity appeared. But after waiting a few minutes, the IP SLA and more entities, disappeared. [cid:image005.png@01D16E46.CFB02A50] I attached the discovery debug information for both hosts. Normal Users not getting permissions using Active Directory

I have included the link at the bottom to where I described the issue which was marked “resolved” and I was pointed here for help. I have the professional version of observium where users are all successfully authenticating, but when normal users log in they can’t see anything. I edited there permissions and allowed them all to see multiple devices(screenshot in link),but they still can’t see anything. Observium recognizes they log in as normal users, but doesn’t let them see any of the other devices they have access to. Global Read, and administrators work fine. I have a few host that were recently upgraded from ESXi5.1 to ESXi6.0. After upgrading, Observium no longer is reporting on physical RAM, at all. Host are Dell r810/r720; at time of upgrade their OpenManage was also upgraded to 8.2. The Observium event log for the servers say... "Memory pool removed: mib host-resources-mib, index 27, descr Real Memory" So I see it was removed, but why? I did an smptwalk on the box "snmpwalk -v2c -c XXXXX 10.X.X.X .1.3.6.1.2.1.25.2.2.0"--> HOST-RESOURCES-MIB::hrMemorySize.0 = INTEGER: 536857360 Kbytes It looks like the value it still there. Hi again. Increased innodb_buffer_pool_size and restarted mysqld - solved the problem. Buffer_pool_size has probably nothing to do with this issue but I was also getting warnings about buffer pool is occupied by InnoDB: lock heaps or the adaptive hash index. It is a good thing to sometimes keep a peek into /var/log/mysqld.log file (or where ever it is stored). Dear all, I am currently developing a new application agent for Oracle databases and need some guidance on how to implement it properly. My first goal is to get the current and historical usage of each tablespace - a DB consists of multiple tablespaces. This would give a good overview of data growth inside a database. My application agent running on my DB is polling the data via SQL and returning it to observium as comma spaced values. The output looks as follows: CIT;600;596.63 COMPASS;28488;1406.5 COMPASS_IDX;27996;1568.06 CONFIG;1000;959.69 CONTROLLING;600;596.69 CSR;40960;4966 Now I'm almost at my question. All existing application agents I know are rather static, containing only certain fixed (and hard coded) entities. Tablespaces are much like storage in my point of view so I think it would be a good idea to implement them as a new storage-type in the storage table of the observium database. Is this a proper way to do it or do you suggest a different approach? I'd like to be as compatible as possible to future updates and would also contribute my code if anyone needs it. Unknown Locations in Device > Locations menu

Hi All I'm having some trouble with Observium's mapping - we have it configured to build the Location list and geolocation, etc automatically based on the address/location pulled via SNMP. This works for almost every device we have, but there are two devices which show up under Unknown Location, even though Observium has pulled correct and valid address data for them. It does not appear to successfully pull co-ordinates for the address either, as the two devices appear on the map in the middle of the ocean. I have tried switching from the Yahoo API to the Google API (with API key) but this has not changed the behaviour of the issue. Currently on version 0.16.2.7592, we update via SVN once a month and we were having this same issue on 0.16.1.x as-well. Hoping somebody here has seen this issue before and can help me out or point me in the right direction.

Device mix-up

So, weird thing happened today … We had a network outage that lasted for maybe 45 minutes that kept Observium from monitoring one site. When Observium resumed its normal monitoring activities, it somehow added a whole bunch of inventory items for a Cisco router to a KVM virtual server. About 10 minutes ago, it deleted all of the Cisco items, and is now back to normal. Has anyone seen anything like this before? Speeding up caching and database

Hi Team, I have a performance issue with the web interface. My Observium is monitoring 3095 devices from which 168 are switches (Just a bit less than 20000 ports total). My server is an IBM X3650 M4, 32G of ram, 6 cores and a raid 10 of SSD. I am more than happy with the polling performance has it finishing in under 200seconds. But the web interface is quite annoying : I have a minimum Time to first bit of ~2seconds. Once these two seconds have passed the page load almost instantly, graphs included. So the question is, can I speed things up ? And if yes how ? It looks like Observium is spending about a second in the database and says that the Cache took 2 seconds to process (?). Do I have some leverage on these points to make it faster ? Sorting on traffic bug?

Hi, when you are in the ports view of a switch, and you sort on the column traffic. speeds op 900Mbit are sorted before 1.5Gbit. probably because 900 is larger than 1.5 but the unit is different so i guess that needs to be taken into account somehow?

Guys, need some assistance here. I updated Observium this morning to Observium Professional 0.16.2.7609. Since that upgrade all my devices have shown down. If I go to the command line I am able to ping via DNS all the devices. I did notice that during the svn update it seemed that a lot of the MIB’s were updated. Any guidance on what direction I should be looking to bring my system back online? Thanks, Aaron

FreeBSD port update / "red" draw errors

As discussed back in June — http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.network.observium.general/10286 - this issue also affects FreeBSD. Mathieu Arnold contributed a fix (https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=207057) which, together with a few other small patches & cleanups has been merged into the FreeBSD ports collection a few hours ago. May be an idea to apply this patch (below) to HEAD; I suspect there is a similar issue in generic_multi_data_separated. Cisco Port Errors Alerts

We are monitoring Cisco routers using Observium We have seen that the list of Errored Ports displays only ports that have "Tx/Rx Errors" on them - it is not displaying ports which have "Tx/Rx Discards". The Custom Alerts documentation also does not mention any way to check Interface Discards separately, We have tried adding ifOutDiscards_rate, but it does not work. Is there any way to achieve this. Hello, We’re using Brocade FC-switches with virtual fabrics. According to http://community.brocade.com/t5/Fibre-Channel-SAN/Looking-for-monitor-virtu… <http://community.brocade.com/t5/Fibre-Channel-SAN/Looking-for-monitor-virtu…> using snmpv3 and “context” I should be able to monitor ports in each context. Is this supported in Observium? Setting a specific context for snmpv3. As far as I know, it’s only possible to add a device once, if it has the same IP - how would i monitor the different contexts? — Ole Hansen

Cisco 6500 PSU with 1xAC fault

Hi, Does anyone know if there is a way to detect a failed AC input on a 6500 PSU when the PSU has dual inputs? I've just noticed that when one of the inputs is removed from each PSU there is no indication in Observium that anything is wrong at all. At the CLI you can see the status changes to AC LOW. As, iin Observium, one cannot change the port description, you need to rely on being able to set those in the switches (e.g. when you want to use Peering, Transit and other trickery). On D-LINK ifName contains a generated Slot0/1 … Slot0/28, etc. These cannot be changed. Random NetMan UPS sensors appeared

Hi, Our daily discovery has just found a load of (invalid) new sensors on all our various Riello NetMan cards everywhere, easiest to show the image below. Basically, it seems to find various infratec-rms sensors, whatever they are? Obviously they don't exist on these devices, so we suddenly got a load of alarms from each UPS for each of the "failed" sensors: Running 7575 - Any ideas? Cheers! Accessing Observium from mobile devices

Hello everyone, We are trying out Observium CE, now seriously considering the subscription, and really love the interface and functionality of the application. One requirement we have is being able to access this information from a mobile device, such as iPhone. I have been searching online, unable to find any information about this topic. Does anyone know of a solution to this, or is there an existing template, app or product that can interface with Observium? Beautiful piece of software. Alert check config for a UPS "Status" entry

We'd like to alert when any of our APC UPS'es output status is not "online" I see an alert check type is "status" but I'm not sure what to use for the other settings. Right now we have a UPS in hardware bypass due to a bad inverter (ugh) and the status entry says "event alert, status hardwareFailureBypass". Graph presentation page - leaving it up for a long period

During observing a team using observium coming from one of the similar competing platforms; noticed a fair bit of confusion as to what updates and what not. Mostly during ‘dive ins’ when something post incident was ‘kept an eye on’ for the ensuing 3-6 hours; including across work-shift related handovers. The issue is which pages auto-refresh - and which not. And I think the only place where it jars is at the date selection/update buttoned pages. Specifically - when you look at the detailed graph; i.e. on: http://10.11.0.132/graphs/to=1454928724/id=7287/type=sensor_graph/from=1454… Having gotten there from an overview page such as: http://10.11.0.132/device/device=722/tab=health/metric=temperature/id= 7287/ it shows right away as a most recent 24 hour ‘date preset’. The user then sees this page nicely reload every N minutes (as confirmed in the top right of the page). And an experienced ops-hand will track that from the corner of his/her eye - and ignore it the instant the graph stays ‘sane’. BUT in reality the date preset does not track - it is just the 6/24/48h/week/month/year tiny graphs at the top that get updated. And that is easy to miss. So two small UX things suggestions: 1) Would it be possible if, left unattended after, to start rolling with the time; updating the date presets bar when it was never touched in the first place. OR once it was shown for 2-3 minutes - highlight something in the Date preset bar to signal the data is out of date — e.g. have the Update/reload button on the far right be highlighted; i.e. signal an update is possible/due/needed. OR perhaps in combination with a pause/play button very OBVIOUSLY set to ‘pause’ as a more generic idea. 2) Since the preset shown there is in effect the second preset from the 6, 24, 48, one week bare above it - may be nice to indicate this - i.e. that the preset has been filled out in this mode. On some systems SNMPv2-MIB:: sysORTable contains a list of MIBs supported by the agent. Of interest is the: sysORID entry which is defined as: An authoritative identification of a capabilities statement with respect to various MIB modules supported by the local SNMPv2 entity acting in an agent role. and has the OID of those MIBs. syslog not working for one server

Hi, I have syslog working for more then 10 hosts but, for one I can’t get it to work. This server is not in the same location, it sent its log through a vpn tunnel, when it arrives at the router I do a natting: Just forward to the observium server. I see the ump traffic arriving but notting show up in the syslog (database) We can monitor the server without any problems. anyone a suggestion ? Thanks

Extracting port names from D-Link switches - feature parity

In observium we cannot, AFAIUI from the UI, overwrite the various switch port names. Observium relies on the port names getting set ‘right’ on the agent side. However - having control over the name is useful e.g. for peering/ transit link regex()ing and what not. Unfortunately not all switches allow for this (for some reason, it seems to be mostly enterprise POE switches). One vendor that does not allow this is D-Link; their ifNames are hardcoded to Slot/0, Port0.0 or the empty string on some (most recent?) product lines. However they do allow the editing of the sysPortDescString in their private enterprise MIB (through config, API, SNMP or the web interface). Below is a small file diff that makes this possible. It is a bit inefficient; as doing it at discovery time is not enough; ifName is watched by the port poller —and I cannot see an easy place to make a ‘note’ of the expensively found OID. But may be of use as a starting point for some. We have a tiny sensor/discovery module (gist below) that picks up the (back)pressure, in Bar, of a cooling system. With a fresh install - seeing quite a few cases like below — odd Y axis legend. The values are roughly at 2.2 and 2.0 and only happen for some ranges. Not sure if this is an old or new problem. FreeBSD ports - Observium CE update to

Folks, The FreeBSD port has been updated to Observium CE 0.16.1.7533; along with a whole bunch of extra/updated dependencies. This also makes the migration/activation to the professional version pretty much a ‘drop in’ now & makes the polling more efficient. SNMP internal mode is expressly disabled (it seems to suffer from the same issue as on fedora - some substitution issue). Thanks, Dw.

Reg: ARP Table not working

Hi Team, I upgraded recently (a couple of times this week) and just reported that the ARP/NDP Table part of observium doesn’t load. Nothing errors in the apache error log. When I run poller.php manually, it does pull the information also. Please support, let me know what's needs to take care. Many Thanks, Madhu
