We are at 7608. Hello, Password reset on https://www.observium.org/subs/index.php does not appear to be working. My observium username and password is not working on the svn anymore and I cannot login to account management. Is this a known issue?

Guys, need some assistance here. I updated Observium this morning to Observium Professional 0.16.2.7609. Since that upgrade all my devices have shown down. If I go to the command line I am able to ping via DNS all the devices. I did notice that during the svn update it seemed that a lot of the MIB’s were updated. Any guidance on what direction I should be looking to bring my system back online? Thanks, Aaron

As discussed back in June — http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.network.observium.general/10286 - this issue also affects FreeBSD. Mathieu Arnold contributed a fix (https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=207057) which, together with a few other small patches & cleanups has been merged into the FreeBSD ports collection a few hours ago. May be an idea to apply this patch (below) to HEAD; I suspect there is a similar issue in generic_multi_data_separated. Cisco Port Errors Alerts

We are monitoring Cisco routers using Observium We have seen that the list of Errored Ports displays only ports that have "Tx/Rx Errors" on them - it is not displaying ports which have "Tx/Rx Discards". The Custom Alerts documentation also does not mention any way to check Interface Discards separately, We have tried adding ifOutDiscards_rate, but it does not work. Is there any way to achieve this. Hello, We’re using Brocade FC-switches with virtual fabrics. Is this supported in Observium? Setting a specific context for snmpv3. As far as I know, it’s only possible to add a device once, if it has the same IP - how would i monitor the different contexts? — Ole Hansen

Cisco 6500 PSU with 1xAC fault

Hi, Does anyone know if there is a way to detect a failed AC input on a 6500 PSU when the PSU has dual inputs? I've just noticed that when one of the inputs is removed from each PSU there is no indication in Observium that anything is wrong at all. At the CLI you can see the status changes to AC LOW. As, iin Observium, one cannot change the port description, you need to rely on being able to set those in the switches (e.g. when you want to use Peering, Transit and other trickery). On D-LINK ifName contains a generated Slot0/1 … Slot0/28, etc. These cannot be changed. Random NetMan UPS sensors appeared

Hi, Our daily discovery has just found a load of (invalid) new sensors on all our various Riello NetMan cards everywhere, easiest to show the image below. Basically, it seems to find various infratec-rms sensors, whatever they are? Obviously they don't exist on these devices, so we suddenly got a load of alarms from each UPS for each of the "failed" sensors: Running 7575 - Any ideas? Cheers! Accessing Observium from mobile devices

Hello everyone, We are trying out Observium CE, now seriously considering the subscription, and really love the interface and functionality of the application. One requirement we have is being able to access this information from a mobile device, such as iPhone. I have been searching online, unable to find any information about this topic. Does anyone know of a solution to this, or is there an existing template, app or product that can interface with Observium? Beautiful piece of software. Alert check config for a UPS "Status" entry

We'd like to alert when any of our APC UPS'es output status is not "online" I see an alert check type is "status" but I'm not sure what to use for the other settings. Right now we have a UPS in hardware bypass due to a bad inverter (ugh) and the status entry says "event alert, status hardwareFailureBypass". Graph presentation page - leaving it up for a long period

During observing a team using observium coming from one of the similar competing platforms; noticed a fair bit of confusion as to what updates and what not. Mostly during ‘dive ins’ when something post incident was ‘kept an eye on’ for the ensuing 3-6 hours; including across work-shift related handovers. The issue is which pages auto-refresh - and which not. And I think the only place where it jars is at the date selection/update buttoned pages. Specifically - when you look at the detailed graph; i.e. on: http://10.11.0.132/graphs/to=1454928724/id=7287/type=sensor_graph/from=1454… Having gotten there from an overview page such as: http://10.11.0.132/device/device=722/tab=health/metric=temperature/id= 7287/ it shows right away as a most recent 24 hour ‘date preset’. The user then sees this page nicely reload every N minutes (as confirmed in the top right of the page). And an experienced ops-hand will track that from the corner of his/her eye - and ignore it the instant the graph stays ‘sane’. BUT in reality the date preset does not track - it is just the 6/24/48h/week/month/year tiny graphs at the top that get updated. And that is easy to miss. So two small UX things suggestions: 1) Would it be possible if, left unattended after, to start rolling with the time; updating the date presets bar when it was never touched in the first place. OR once it was shown for 2-3 minutes - highlight something in the Date preset bar to signal the data is out of date — e.g. have the Update/reload button on the far right be highlighted; i.e. signal an update is possible/due/needed. OR perhaps in combination with a pause/play button very OBVIOUSLY set to ‘pause’ as a more generic idea. 2) Since the preset shown there is in effect the second preset from the 6, 24, 48, one week bare above it - may be nice to indicate this - i.e. that the preset has been filled out in this mode. Dw.

syslog not working for one server

Hi, I have syslog working for more then 10 hosts but, for one I can’t get it to work. This server is not in the same location, it sent its log through a vpn tunnel, when it arrives at the router I do a natting: Just forward to the observium server. I see the ump traffic arriving but notting show up in the syslog (database) We can monitor the server without any problems. anyone a suggestion ? Thanks

Extracting port names from D-Link switches - feature parity

In observium we cannot, AFAIUI from the UI, overwrite the various switch port names. Observium relies on the port names getting set ‘right’ on the agent side. However - having control over the name is useful e.g. for peering/ transit link regex()ing and what not. Unfortunately not all switches allow for this (for some reason, it seems to be mostly enterprise POE switches). One vendor that does not allow this is D-Link; their ifNames are hardcoded to Slot/0, Port0.0 or the empty string on some (most recent?) product lines. However they do allow the editing of the sysPortDescString in their private enterprise MIB (through config, API, SNMP or the web interface). Below is a small file diff that makes this possible. It is a bit inefficient; as doing it at discovery time is not enough; ifName is watched by the port poller —and I cannot see an easy place to make a ‘note’ of the expensively found OID. But may be of use as a starting point for some. We have a tiny sensor/discovery module (gist below) that picks up the (back)pressure, in Bar, of a cooling system. FreeBSD ports - Observium CE update to

Folks, The FreeBSD port has been updated to Observium CE 0.16.1.7533; along with a whole bunch of extra/updated dependencies. This also makes the migration/activation to the professional version pretty much a ‘drop in’ now & makes the polling more efficient. SNMP internal mode is expressly disabled (it seems to suffer from the same issue as on fedora - some substitution issue). Thanks, Dw.

Hi Team, I upgraded recently (a couple of times this week) and just reported that the ARP/NDP Table part of observium doesn’t load. Nothing errors in the apache error log. Couple of small feature suggestions - Would be nice if we could rely on a http://www.observium.org/observium-0.16.1.7533.tar.gz in parallel to the standard http://www.observium.org/observium-community-latest.tar.gz for the varius dpkg/debian/freebd/brew port collections. - Would be nice if the block in defaults.inc.php with: // Location of executables $config['rrdtool'] = "/usr/local/bin/rrdtool”; ……. $config['file'] = "/usr/bin/file”; could be overwridden by a <ROOTDIR>/config.os.php - and perhaps itself live separate from the defaults. As this allows a puppet/ansible/chef recipe (or the various ports collections) to manage this file as an OS specific thing; and keep the per system configs strictly in config.php. Making the latter the only thing to preserve across migrations (and not having to cross check it for OS specific ‘new’ things). With more and more people using things like vagrant/docker/etc - that sort of abstraction becomes useful. Dw.

Single box scalability/sizing?

We currently have ~500 devices/50,000 ports being monitored on a dual cpu E5-2643 v0 system. It's currently running around 80% cpu (all cores w/ hyper-threading) and on a raid-10 16 drive array (sas 2.5" 10K rpm) which averages 1k iops. Most systems are polled in < 5minutes (with about 5-10 taking longer as they're fully loaded boxes). Looking to plan for future growth, I'm trying to see if anyone is running larger installations and their performance on a single box in trying to gauge if it's worthwhile to spend the $$ to upgrade to a newer V3 cpu system, or if we've effectively reached a single-point saturation limit and have to deploy distributed. I.e. do we have anyone here running say 1500 devices or 150,000 - 200,000 ports on a single system? If so, care to share your specs? Thanks. Steve

I have the same with our monitoring. All the vmware servers show all vms twice. Set fixed scale of Y-axis on mini-graphs?

I don't find much value of the adaptive scaling since it means I have to read the AXIS and not only throw a quick eye at it to see anomalies. Gents, I’m trying to trigger an event based upon availability in the ”load balancer” section, trying to find a variable in the device data that I can trigger on. Basically I want to trigger if a Virtual Server is down, or if the HA status change. In below devices/port display - we get for Slot0/21 the connected “port” on “device”. - i.e. eth0 on Ypenburg. However for Slot0/24 we get ’10’ on <macaddress>. Even though that actual port is called ‘Slot0/10’ on ‘Fooburg’ and known to Observium. Not sure if this is intentional - or the side effect from some LLCP discovery process gone awry. Dw.

Hello, I've just completed a new install of Observium, version 0.16.1.7535 (27th January 2016), and have a couple of questions in hopes that someone can point me to the correct debugging process. 1) The mac address information on the port is of the port itself, rather than the connected device. We are strictly Cisco in our switching, most are 2960 variety with some 3750 and 3850 mixed in. I see in the demo software, the mac address on the port pages shows that of the client. Also, several months ago, we ran a small version of Observium (since decommissioned) and the client mac populated. 2) Auto discovery based on CDP seems really sporadic, several neighbors will be added, but some will not. SNMP settings are the same across the board and CDP discovered neighbors can be added manually without issue. Is there any chance someone has come across these before? Hey guys, Have some questions I haven't found answers yet :-/ 1. Read about someone requesting checking and alerting of (os) services, is this already implemented or will it be? 2. Any chance to get to know about new community versions? Couldn't find something on website :-/ 3. Some of our switches have kind of leaks in their graphiocs (see pic on mail, from an ATI 8000GS/24POE). Not sure where this comes from, any ideas? Maybe any debug ideas? Observium impact on Juniper CPUs

Folks, Just sharing experience using Observium and Juniper EX / MX equipments. I exchanged with Adam and Juniper tac about some issues on some EX4550 having CPU at 100% with no result in solving the issue with a log of tweak in Observium / Junos . I changed the server 3 days ago, faster stronger better :) And voila , CPU dropped on all devices, with the same config.php ! The previous one was not a small server ( aka VM ) but the vm was not as strong as this one. I only had the issue with Juniper equipment not with cisco / Arista . So if you are facing the same issue ( and I exchanged with a few of you ) , you know what to do :) Raphael PS : I still have some EX4550 deleting interfaces from time to time, but I will open another thread !

VMs Tab missing

Hello everyone, I am having a bizarre issue with one of my hosts. I have a cluster of hosts for a VMware ESXI 6 environment and have discovered and polled them successfully. However, there is one host that is not displaying the VMs tab. Has anyone had a similar issue before? I have the latest version of the subscription edition of Observium running on CentOS7. Alerts for QNAP storage

Hello all, I am working on setting up alerting for a QNAP storage device. I have the latest version of the subscription version of Observium. What I would like is to be able to have Observium send me an email when a hard drive fails. The drives show up under the status portion of the device page. Did some tweaking. When I click on the link, this is the URL which opens: /health/metric=sensors/event=alert%2Cwarning/ Showing nothing. Same for ignored: /health/metric=sensors/event=ignore/ But when I change the URL a bit like this: /health/metric=sensors/state=Down I can see the 12 alerts (which are from a Device I ignore anyway). Changed the polling as well now so they are no longer reported. But it looks like there is a problem with the URL being created on the main overview page. Hi, Today I checked some stuff in Observium. I can see the overview on the main page for Devices, Ports and Sensors. With the Sensors it is showing me 12 alert in the Down column. Clicking on the link doesn't show anything. Checking all Sensors, I can see some in red, but only 4 in total. Anyone knows what this is, or how I can get this fixed. Thanks, Christian

switch missing interface data

Hi All not sure if this is a bug or maybe something wrong with our switch? we added a TP-Link 8 port gigabit switch to monitor as we wanted to see what data we could get for some reason, observium has listed all interfaces as Ethernet Interface ? also it appears the vlans are also being found as lans, as well ? no port 1 port 2 etc just Ethernet Interface and Vlan ? what ive also found is on the interfaces page the plans are showing these blue arrows with the ethernet interface name ? never seen it before? any ideas? attached is screenshots, poller log and discovery log if people what help :) Simon

Disable email notification every 5 minutes

Hello I installed the latest CE (0.16.1.7533) and set up some alerts with email notification. It is working great, but now i get lot of mails in every 5 minutes from the same alerts. Can i set up that get email only when the alarm caused or resolved? So just 2 mails (or get mails in X minutes (e.g. In every 1 hors) not in every 5 minutes? Thanks! Laszlo

Friendly names for devices/hosts and interfaces/ports

Hi, is there any option to add friendly names to hosts and interfaces? For example, our hostnames are normalized (lx0001), so I would like to show them in Observium as pro-jboss-1, px-mysql-3, dev-apache-6, etc. and see them in all places, next to the hostname, Is this possible? The same for host interfaces, por example, eth0 or eno16780032 to be shown as "service", "management", "backend", "backup", "storage", etc. We have a paid subscription, is there any kind of development included?

Hi, I've seen that alerts include an image, base encoded in the actual html file, but the image is never displayed. Now I'm using that Redmond build software to read mails, perhaps that's why it's not working? Anyone else with outlook who can see the graph included in the alerts? //Anders

Observium: Pre-auth and security questions

Tom, Thank you for your input. This has been a bit of a learning experience for me. After researching and playing around with Apache, I was able to enable basic authentication using htpasswd. When I attempt to access Observium, I'm prompted for credentials as expected. Once I login with the creds I've configured, I land at the Observium form based authentication page. I'm trying to pass the username and password provided to htpasswd, and send them to Observium on the backend. As you noted earlier, It seems like I should be able to do this with the remote user variable. However, I can't seem to get it to work. I've listed my current virtual host config below. I enabled a2enmod headers and restarted Apache with no luck. I'm curious if you know if there's something I'm missing. I'll keep digging and working away at this, but I thought I'd provide an update to the mailing list. Other users may find it helpful if we sort it out. ver: CE 0.16.1.7533 The two attached pictures show that i have 11 devices with unset location, which is strange as i've not added any equipment. when clicking on the location UNSET, i get the second picture, which is "No devices found". the other thing to note is when selecting the location drop down, it only shows up to Townsville. I have one more, Wollongong. So it appears to be showing $count locations not $count+1 (+1 for the UNSET entry) Wollongong is not listed out of alpha order. Selecting Wollongong from the Locations menu correctly shows equipment in the results, but still doesn't list Wollongong in the Locations drop down. Sensors changing precision/scale

Has anybody encountered devices that change their scale/precision whenever they feel like it? We have some that now behave this way after a recent software upgrade. We think it's a vendor bug (in this instance, Bluecoat), but might be prudent to catch the changing precision value during the poll. Currently it looks like the precision is detected once and stored in the db. Then subsequent polling is only adjusted based on the original precision value. I've attached a graph and some walks showing the behaviour...

Hi, Firstly, a big thanks to the Dev team for releasing the latest CE version; very much appreciated. Since the upgrade my "Custom traffic graphs" just have the "Error drawing graph" message. Secondly, I also note the SNMP Statistic graphs on all devices have the same message. As I just use Observium on my home network "because I can" none of this is critical for me but I'd thought I'd pass on my observations. Hi All I'm using 0.16.1.7527 (stable) I have added a custom OID in the GUI but i dont get any data logged. (hope the screenshots gets included here) [cid:image001.png@01D15916.D69E82C0] Device: Paloalto Firewall (PA-5060) OID: .1.3.6.1.4.1.25461.2.1.2.5.1.3 (did try with/without the leading dot) OID type: GAUGE (tested with COUNTER too ) In the properties under device I can see that it has problems with the OID [cid:image002.png@01D15916.D69E82C0] Under SNMP errors This OID works perfectly in HP IMC and Solarwinds SNMP tools. Hello Since version Observium Professional 0.15.11.7200 I can't receive email alert. It worked until this version. My actual version: Observium 0.16.1.7533 (26th January 2016). Monitor OSX system. Problem with reported size for NFS share and monitor processes

Hi there. Monitoring a osx "server" with observium. To get it to see the NF shares I added this to snmpd.conf: skipNFSInHostResources 0 storageUseNFS 2 This worked and I now see the shares. The large NAS is reported with wrong sizes though. Expected is this: df -ah |grep midskog filmddn:/ddnnas0/midskog 958Ti 193Ti 765Ti 21% 7479476 692520524 1% /Volumes/midskog Reported in observium is: Size: 208GB Used: 915GB Free: -707GB I actually think this could be an net-snmp bug in OSX but I'm not sure. When I snmpwalk locally I see this for that particular mount: HOST-RESOURCES-MIB::hrStorageType.61 = OID: HOST-RESOURCES-TYPES::hrStorageFixedDisk HOST-RESOURCES-MIB::hrStorageDescr.61 = STRING: /Volumes/midskog HOST-RESOURCES-MIB::hrStorageAllocationUnits.61 = INTEGER: 512 Bytes HOST-RESOURCES-MIB::hrStorageSize.61 = INTEGER: 436207616 HOST-RESOURCES-MIB::hrStorageUsed.61 = INTEGER: 1920024576 Any one that had similar issues and found a solution? Display of VRF's defined on a particular device in addition to globally?

Is there a way to display what VRF's are defined on a particular switch like you can vlans/ports/etc, in addition to globally? I'm running 0.16.17407. We have several thousand VRF's, being able to see what VRF's are actually defined on a device would really be nice opposed to having to log in each time when tracking things down. Since observium is obviously pulling this data to come up with the global view, it has to have it recorded. I think this would just be a display/parsing item? Is this something that may be included in a future version? Thanks. Steve

Adding a new graph

Observium newbie... This maybe a question that has been answered a million time but I've not been able to find an answer. I have an Avaya 4524 switch that is not in a climate controlled environment. I wish to graph the temperature within Observium. I know the OID is 1.3.6.1.4.1.45.1.6.3.7.1.1.5 and the calibration is .5 degreee. ( ie. 70 = 35 degrees) I can view this in the switches GUI and by snmpwalk. I have confirmed Observium is using the correct MIB for the device. Can someone point me to a newbie guide. (My php skills are minimal)

Alerts ifType eq ethernetCsmacd

Howdy, I wanted to thank everyone for the great support on this mailing list. I have another puzzler…the last one I hope. At the bottom of https://www.observium.org/docs/alerting_examples/ there are two alerts that rely on ifType eq ethernetCsmacd For some odd reason when I rebuild they don’t want to apply to any of my devices. As soon as I change that to “*” they bring in all the devices. I went out and pulled the data on the Mikrotik router ports and they are responding with this same ifType. I checked it vis snmpwalk and also on a test router using http://ip/device/device=1/tab=port/port=1/view=data/ I’ve tried spelling out equals, wrapping ethernetCsmacd in quotes (view=data says it’s a 14 character string), and a few other things but I haven’t found the right incantation. These two entries currently match the examples and the demo server. I’ve ensured that I have non-disabled ports and non-ignored ports that should be recognized. &debug=1 reveals SELECT `alert_status` FROM `alert_table` WHERE 1 AND `alert_test_id` = '7' AND (( `device_id` NOT IN (55) AND (`device_id` != ‘' AND `device_id` IS NOT NULL))) ORDER BY `device_id`, `alert_test_id`, `entity_type`, `entity_id` DESC (not there wasn’t a LIMIT 0,100 at the end of that select like on other alerts…aside from that this select is the same as the other alerts) Anyway that select returned 0 hits despite me having well over 100 active ports with that ifType. Tom, I overlooked that setting and made the suggested change. However, Observium still seems to prompt for credentials after I sign in with basic auth. I’m looking a using Observium to generate a number of metric specific dashboards for routers and switches I have around the country. The $config['frontpage']['minigraphs']['ids’] = “<id>,<metric>,<title>”; configuration looks like it’ll give me what I want but ideally I just have those minigraphs on a page by themselves. Is there a way to define a seconds page? i.e. $config[‘minigraphpage']['minigraphs']['ids’] = “<id>,<metric>,<title>”; and have that show on a second screen? - james

Hi, we discovered an issue with CISCO ASR9K and 4byte ASN's - the ASR return "0" when querying the BGP4-MIB parameter "bgpLocalAs". This stops observium from discovering the BGP sessions. I have done some research and found that Juniper devices seem to have a similar problem which was fixed in the polling / discovery script already. The same should be done for Cisco. The CISCO-BGP4-MIB included in Observium is somewhat outdated - CISCO introduced a parameter "cbgplocalAs" in a later version which delivers the correct result. Could you please look into this ? device to device links

Hi, I ran across a graphing script on github that caught my eye. It reportedly graphs device to device links in Observium (sort of like cacti + Network Weathermap). It uses a table called obserium.links which I don’t have. Google hasn’t been able to give me any leads other than, of course, the developer. I’m wondering if anyone happens to know if it’s possible to associate device ports in this manner… e.g. Device 25, port 287 links to Device 37, port 460. Today I use cacti and weathermap for this. Hi, i am a private user of the Observium CE, and I wanted to ask If the MySQL agent will already be fixed in the ne CE release, otherwise I would happily provide a patch for the agent I made just a moment ago when I updated my MariaDB Server to 10 and the innodb query stopped working[0], since it's removed with version 10 and version 5.6.1 of MySQL[1]. Arbor Network's MIBs

Great to see Arbor MIB's getting updated in the SVN checkouts :) I don't monitor any of our own products, but I'm going to talk to the Peakflow guys and see if I can get access to some of the lab gear. We have at least one setup (not sure if it's TMS or SP) that gets about ~8Gb/s of anonymous traffic from a few ISPs. Should give me some useful data in Observium. Manually setting global temperature thresholds

Hi, I have a bit of a puzzler and I’m hoping someone can point me in the right direction. I’m monitoring a number of Mikrotik devices. I’m unable to set the temperature thresholds on the device. They all seem to report different thresholds despite the fact that they are all spec’d at -30c to 70c. Instead of going into each device’s settings in Observium and making a custom threshold, is there any way for me to do it in the config file? or some other way using “os eq routeros”? Thanks, Joey

ASR9k fan failures not detected?

Hi, I've just noticed that fan failures on the ASR 9k are not detected by Observium. In fact, it seems have nothing at all under the 'status' tab? The 6500s have over 20 entries in there for "Fan - Fail" or "PSU - Fail" or "I'm not facing magnetic north - Fail" etc. but the ASR9000 have no status tab whatsoever. Reason for noticing this; is that we have a chassis which currently has a 'Major-Alarm' failure indicator LED on the RSP, due to a failed fan tray. Memory graph not showing as intended.

Hello, I just set up Observium on CentOS 7 and everything works great! Except for one thing. The Memory and Virtual memory graph on the dashboard for windows/linux servers won't draw. Switches work fine though. ModbusTCP via SNMP Gateway. Possible to monitor in Observium?

Hi I have a schneider tsxetg100 ethernet gateway that has a PowerLogic PM3250 attached to it. I can successfully monitor this in APC StruxureWare Data Center expert but trying to get away from that solution. Observium does find and see the tsxetg100 as a generic device but I don't see the PowerLogic attached to it. Is it possible to monitor a Modbus TCP device like this through the SNMP gateway?
