I am thinking of pushing team to purchase the full version, and even for some support. I have a free version now Questions I have are the following for my managers: 1. Can I alert off of bandwidth utilization? What other types of things can I alert off for the enterprise? 2. Can I alert for jitter across an MPLS? This is a biggie, because we have about 40 circuits. 3. We use WUG, which I hate… how is this better? 4. We use Solarwinds, which is expensive, why is this better? 5. (I know this is bad form, but) why these bars in the graph: Thanks for your awesome answers, and please, give me some reasons that I can use to get team to put money into this. Ryan Milton

Port () Deleted

Portnames instead of ifAlias for Fabric OS devices

Hello, Observium (as of 0.15.9.6997) displays ifAlias / ifDescr as label for Brocade Fabric OS SAN switches. Brocade, however, uses “portnames”, which can be found at OID 1.3.6.1.4.1.1588.2.1.1.1.6.2.1.36 Is this per design or just because very few have Fabric OS devices in Observium? — Ole Hansen

Graph errors on OS upgrade

Hi list, I'm running CE version 0.15.6.6430, on my non-critical home network. I recently upgraded my server OS from Ubuntu 15.04 to 15.10. This appears to have resulted in some of the graphs in Observium now not drawing. The OS upgraded took rrdtools from version 1.4.8 to 1.5.4, and I suspect this is the root of the issue as I seem to remember this being raised on the list before. I note there was a bugfix committed in August for "Fixed some issues with rrdtool command parsing on newer rrdtool versions". Can you confirm that the draw error's I'm seeing are most likely related to the rrdtool version, and that the next release of CE will probably fix it? An example of the rrdtool error is: RRDTool Output: ERROR: Unused Arguments "" in command : AREA:inbits0#B6D14B:p3p1 Rx: Sorry if this is not enough information. LLDP issues

Spent some time trying to get Observium to deal with MIBs as produced by LLDP (Link Layer Discovery Protocol) on a couple of diverse network equipment types. Running the latest CE edition 0.15.6.6430. After initial meager success (only two boxes recognized and several L2 neighbours reported with wrong interfaces), a couple of changes in includes/discovery/discovery-protocols/lldp-mib.inc.php brought some sense into results. There are essentially two problems there: - some lldpRemoteSystemsData OIDs could not be correlated with an interface on the other side (for various reasons, see below); - a fallback mechanism which tries to find a match on an interface's MAC address produces a wrong match, because typically all ports on larger switches have the same MAC address and the heuristics just picks the first match, which is almost always wrong. In case of multiple matches the matching on MAC should just fail, which at least would not produce a senseless match causing operators to scratch their heads and wonder who crossed the cables. The comment in lldp-mib.inc.php : // Find the device by MAC address, still matches multiple ports sometimes, we use the first one and hope we're lucky if very much misguided, as all port MAC addresses on a switch are typically the same, at least on all device types that I checked. The first issue above needs more explanation. I found a couple of different reasons for a failed match, as follows. So my solution was to add "case 'interfaceAlias':" and "case 'local':" there; switch ($lldp['lldpRemPortIdSubtype']) { case 'interfaceName': + case 'interfaceAlias': + case 'local': A Case 3 is a bit nastier and is specific to our Summit Extreme X450a switches. The problem there is that the interface name (i.e. a port number) as reported in the LLDP MIB does not use the same naming/numbering convention as the IF-MIB and SQL: the LLDP MIB just uses a port number (1 .. 26), while the SQL field ports.ifName prefixes a port number with a chassis number, which is always a 1 in a non-stackable switch. Moreover the ifIndex uses a formula 1000*chassis + port number. On top of it the PortDesc in LLDP MIB is an empty string, so cannot be used to correlate with IF-MIB::ifDescr. Baytech PDU patch

Flush process causing slow performace

Since upgrading PHP to 5.4, Observium has loaded very slowly at times. Most of the time just a refresh of the homepage will take .150 seconds but occasionally it can take up to a minute to load. Running iotop shows the Flush process running taking up 99.99% IO which directly correlates to the slow page loads. Can anyone shed some light on a way to resolve this?

Log Names of non discoverable Host in autodiscover

Hi, is there any way to find out which host have been found through autodiscovery but could not be queried by snmp or aren't reachable via ICMP? Since we have lots of people working on our network, i do not always know if someone plugs in new switches or routers, especially not if they forget to configure the acls or snmp. The Observium log only shows "added x Hosts to ..." but no failures, running discovery.php -d -h all is a bit too loud and takes quite to long. Any suggestions? regards Serge

hi ! On the linux guests, you can tweak the snmpd.conf as extend .1.3.6.1.4.1.2021.7890.1 distro "/bin/cat /etc/debian_version" so Observium detects the host OS. Is it possible to set other "devices" values, like purpose and serial, via SNMP extensions ? It seems these columns aren't used. best regards, Sala

BGP Alert Checks

Team, I need some guidance. I have spent some time on the web trying to find examples of how to configure a alert checker to tell me when a BGP peer is Admin up but not working. We have quite a few peers in our environment that are Admin down and I just want to ignore those. I have tried many variations of the checker, but must be missing something. Here is a screenshot of the latest attempt. My device and entity match are set to “*”. If I change the condition or any instead of all, I seem to get alerts that are not correct as they are including peer states that are admin down. Any guidance would be appreciated. Thanks, Aaron

Feature request + issues with NetApp cDot and EMC Isilon

Hi Not sure if there is a better place for feature requests, but here it goes : 1. In the group option it would be great to be able to create subgroups and assign/re-assign, so different measures related to the same infrastructure or area can be kept together. 2. Currently it is not possible to rename a group. Would be nice to have this option. 3. Would be great to have some simple functions / regex related to the group graphs to allow consolidating & filtering the data further. Right now it will either aggregate/stack data depending on what it is and it would be more flexible to have some control over this. Also being able to give the aggregated data some more meaningful data labels would be nice. Some time back I asked about NetApp cDOT support....got no answer but saw on the forum that someone was looking into this several months back. Right now the cDOT support is very limited as the MIB is different compared to standard OnTAP and it allow for multiple controller pairs in the same cluster. Any news on what the status is ? Same story for Isilon, here all the server data is gathered, but with complete unawareness of the nodes being in a cluster.... so the only way to get cluster data properly recorded & presented is to create a group for all nodes and create aggregated graphs. Anyone using Observium with IBM GPFS (ESS) ? /Jesper

Request: Add a device proactively

Observium team, I just finished pre-deploying a few routers for a new client, and I'm adding each one to our monitoring platforms in advance. As they're offline, I'll be unable to add them to Observium until they respond to SNMP / ICMP. Is there a way I could add these proactively, and work around the error that Observium pushes our by default? Ideally, I'd like to add them all now, disable their alerts, and enable them when they're deployed and connectivity is in place. I see you have a Ignore RRD checkbox on the add device page. I was going to do something simular, but thought I'd request a feature add. When I deploy my devices, I deploy them with a script that's been standardized / approved. Setting up DHCP would be possible, but it adds additional steps (prone to user error) and may not be possible for all Observium users. I can see why you may not want to add it, but I feel it would be a really nice time saver for future deployments. You configured Observium to say no, I wont poll you if I can't find you. I think this is a little bit of a grey area, where we know it'll be there eventually. Just my two cents. Cannot see ospf or bgp related graphs on Nexus 9000 and MX 480

Hi,I have installed Observium and have ospf and bgp related polling ,discovery parameters in the config.php file. However, I am unable to see the routing protocol related graph in the web page. Is there anything else that I need to do as I have these protocols running on the Nexus 9000 and MX480 router. Thanks,George

Juniper QFX 10G ports discovered as 4.29G

Just FYI, the 10G ports on a QFX 5100 running latest JunOS are being reported with a speed of 4.29Gbps, which I assume is likely the actual returned value being constrained by a 32-bit container? Not a critical thing for us to fix - I was actually disabling polling for all of our Juniper vcp stacks in Observium (most of them take > 300s to complete a polling cycle) but noticed this as I was going through them and figured I'd pass it along. Great progress. Data now appears in RRD, just it’s off by 10 X. Plots show 1.1, correct answer is 11.0 Amps. When I look at the device with iReasoning MIB browser, using the UPS-MIB supplied by TrippLite, or the UPS-MIB from Observium, it says: integer: 11 See attached. Seems most of the MIB files mention units of “0.1 RMS Amp”. Not sure what that does. Hi. New to this list, so please excuse if I break etiquette. For couple years we happily used Observium to monitor and track current through our Tripplite PDUMNH20. Thanks to you all for Observium. Life was OK, but the integrated Tripplite SNMPWEBCARDs had problems from time to time. Tripplite rolled out new firmware (currently 12.06.0065) and that issue was resolved. (SNMPWEBCARD is a component used in many of their products.) Unfortunately, now current plots as a flat line at 0. I've worked with Tripplite support to verify some data is present with snmpwalk. Add Bill to Normal User & Password Change for normal User

Escaped sysContact not being escaped properly

I've got several UBNT devices all running EdgeMax 1.7.0 It appears that they escape the sysContact (and a few other fields) in quotes even if they don't have spaces in them. Observium seems to eat the first one properly but not the second. snmpwalk -Os -c public -v 2c router01 1.3.6.1.2.1.1.4 iso.3.6.1.2.1.1.4.0 = STRING: "\"hostmaster(a)arbor.net\"" However in the UI I see this: sysContact*=>*hostmaster(a)arbor.net\ Which causes email notifications to fail, because of the bad email address. Ignore Statuses Possible?

Hello We have a few AC powered Foundry FWS-24 switches. Observium is showing alerts for the secondary power supply and fans under statuses. Is there anyway to ignore these? I tried poking around and couldn’t find anything that would do the trick. I don’t even think they have secondary power supplies and fans. Maybe in another hardware configuration but certainly not ours. I have attached a screenshot. Running Observium Professional 0.15.10.7072

dlink DGS-1100-24 only found as generic

Hi All, our new D-Link DGS-1100-24 switches are only being discovered as generic device but strangely enough its finding 1 vlan? the syObjectID is being found as .1.3.6.1.4.1.171 but i can see inside os.inc.php the sysObjectID is already included as D-Link-Generic (Line:1950) even tho it could be put under the D-Link Switch (Line:1927) i have included a run poller.php and discover.php commands here - http://pastebin.com/8iKYU16N can the great and wonderful people working at Observium please help :-) Regards Simon - Hestor Ltd

Problem adding user to view a port / vlan

Hi Everyone, Is there a procedure for adding a single user who I want to see vlan traffic statistics and the ports on a switch. I have tired creating a normal user which worked fine. However when I select the device and the port and click Add nothing happens. When I click refresh it still says "This user currently has no permitted ports" Any help would be appreciated, I am using the Professional version 0.15.10.7095 Thanks Stephen

email alert showing device_ping

Hi All, has anybody noticed the weird alerts being sent by email or is it just myself with this issue? I have an alert setup to tell me if device_uptime is between 0 and 600 then alert me (rebooted kit/server) however the email is showing the words device_ping under the email alerts where a graph would show if the alert had a graph attached a screenshot to show you what i mean regards Simon

Orphaned ports

I've been digging around in my database, trying to figure out why I have a large number of ports listed in my observium interface, compared to the number of devices I have. I have discovered several devices that were removed (via delete_device.php) a while back, but it seems that the ports table wasn't completely cleaned up. These devices were removed from the devices table: mysql> select * from devices where device_id in(45,66,67,68,69,70,71,72,73); Empty set (0.00 sec) mysql> But the ports for these devices weren't entirely removed: mysql> select device_id,count(*) as "number of ports" from ports where device_id IN(45,66,67,68,69,70,71,72,73) group by device_id; +-----------+-----------------+ | device_id | number of ports | +-----------+-----------------+ | 45 | 4153 | | 66 | 4153 | | 67 | 4153 | | 68 | 4153 | | 69 | 4153 | | 70 | 1569 | | 71 | 4153 | | 72 | 4153 | | 73 | 4153 | +-----------+-----------------+ 9 rows in set (0.01 sec) mysql> These devices were probably F10/Dell M1000e cards, which I removed from observium because of the large number of l2vlan interfaces on each was causing a processor burden when polled. Rather than fight with them, I just removed them. My question is this, how can I clean up the remnants? Can I just delete these orphaned ports from the table? Or will I break anything if I do that? Multiple OSPF processes

Hello, I have noticed only 1 OSPF process is detected on cisco devices. I have a Catalyst 4500 with 3 processes but only one of them is handle by observium. Is this the normal behavior or does it require special config or not supported at all? Thanks in advance, Miguel

Hi, i'm running observium (latst svn) on a ubuntu 14.04 System. Have Setup rsyslog for udp listening, deployed /etc/rsyslog.d/30-observium.conf as stated in http://www.observium.org/docs/syslog/ However my observium.syslog table stays empty. I have enabled debugging and syslog debuging in config.php so everytime i send a string to /opt/observium/syslog.php the string appears in my observium debug logs. $config['snmp']['max-rep'] working?

Hi Chaps, I'm trying to use $config['snmp']['max-rep] = 9 to work around an issue with a device that won't return everything from ifAlias when using the default (10), however checking the discovery debug it doesn't actually seem to actually be setting the -Cr option in snmpbulkwalk? Am I missing something else to make this work, or is it actually just not working due to its 'experimental' state in the documentation? Running 0.15.10.7059 Thanks, Tim C

Finally, I managed to have the APP tab, however 2 problems still persist: 1. The NTP Graphs and PDNS the show nothing, just error graph not drawing 2. More Observium integrations with rancid

So we've got rancid integration working (thanks Adam and others) in Observium for all of our Mikrotik devices and it is working great. We've got a few Ubiquiti EdgeRouters (based on Vyatta) that we'd like to get hooked up with rancid as well, but the Observium integration confuses me a bit. Do we edit the cloginrc file with the info for how to log into EdgeRouters? I would have assumed we would normally use a different group to tell rancid how to pull config's but everything is just in the Observium group. How does everyone setup rancid to pull down more than one equipment manufacturer's gear? Has anyone pulled config's through rancid into Observium from EdgeRouters? Small feature request

Hi All! One colleague of mine recently met this little (let's call it) glitch, and as he is rather new to the software, he had a hard time solving it (he had to ask me to get introduced into the concept of disabled devices, and the place to search for :)). So when one wants to add a new device, and it already exists, Observium writes a simple error message, like: "Already got device x.y.z.net." What I would like to suggest is two things: 1. make the device name in this error message clickable as anywhere else. This way the novice user can click on the host and see that it's really there 2. if the device is disabled, maybe indicate it in this message, like "Already got device x.y.z.net only disabled" This way the novice user would see why he didn't found the device in the first place. Now that I think of it again, the second one is rather overkill, but the first one would be an easy but logical advancement. Regards, Tylla

Geolocation and Mapping

Hi Guys, As some of you might already have noticed, MapQuest have changed the policies on their geolocation API, breaking our previous geolocation defaults. We briefly switched the default API to Open Street Maps, but due to the large Observium userbase they weren't able to support our request load, and we've since had to switch to Yahoo's geolocation API. If you've kept the subscription version up to date, you should already have these new defaults. The community version can change the geolocation API in the config.php, but doesn't currently support the Yahoo API, which will come in the next release. Details for settings can be found at : http://www.observium.org/docs/config_options/#syslocation-configuration Observium also has support for Yandex and Google geolocation, and though Google's geolocation works best, it can only be used with a commercial license, so that can only be enabled by organisations with such a license. This means that some addresses which previously geolocated may not geolocate properly now (each API has its own quirks when it comes to parsing addresses, so ones which worked before may not work now, and vice-versa!). We're investigating setting up our own geolocation and map imaging servers, along with switching to a new mapping library to try to remove reliance on external organisations. Thanks, adam. Any Materials for Observium new starter?

Hi All, My company just decided that we will be using Observium as the network monitoring on new network environment and the server hosting the Observium is set up and running by one of the Engineers. However, I will be the engineer managing the platform and I’m very much new to the product. More so, I have looked on the web site and Google, it seems that there aren’t enough comprehensive video or guide on how to manage the product bearing in mind that I am new to Linux platform. Please can some one point me to the right direction to get the basic materials needed for Observium? Separate emails for alerts sent to contacts

Hi, I'm looking at using Observium contacts + alerts to replace some alerting we do for customers using Nagios. Is it possible to send a separate email to the primary device contact and any additional contacts specified for alerts in the contact section rather than populating the to field with all recipients on a single email? If not would this be difficult to implement? We'd prefer not to expose the internal email address that receives our alerts to our customers if possible. Thanks, Chris

Observium boucing on ifalias

Hi there, We have a strange issue with the ifalias. We have one Juniper EX4550 with multiple customers on it. There was a bad character in the description : description "Cust: [FIBRE] {XXX} Paris - Zayo Cid:XXXXX Cable:R03110-fo-9-10�”; Observium was bouncing on the if desc. Hi observiumers.. I have a storage_perc alert which sends me a nice email when my storage is above 95%. is it somehow possible to get the actuall storage used and left included in the mail. Since its a procentage there could still be potiential 50GB og free space left.. it all depends on the original size.

Graphing sum total of Current and Power

Would it be possible to add a Total Graph for specific Heath statistics, similar to how the total graphs are displayed for Peering, Transit, and Core port types? What I am interested in is essentially adding values already collected by Observium from a handful of devices (rack PDU's) to determine the combined Current in amps and Power in watts to graph and track power consumption across an entire row or even datacenter. We can see this information per-rack from the PDU device already added to Observium, but for our datacenter managers it would be useful to track power consumption across the whole room or suite. In several of our POPs power is provided so we cannot poll the UPS itself- only our own rack PDUs connected to the facility's power bus. Even then, most have A and B side power so we have two PDUs per rack. To the end, I have created a device group by sensor sorting "pdu" device names and filtering for their output values. However, the built-in aggregate graphs show each device's data on one graph and doesn't combine them for a total. Further, my filter seems to pull many values labeled "Output" including voltage and amperage as well as wattage. Any suggestions to refine my filter to get one group for Amps and another for Watts? Please see the screenshots below. Most PDU's are APC model AP8941. I admit this would really only be useful for the "Power" and "Current" health monitors, as items like voltage and temperature are really only useful per-device. Even then, these total graphs would have the most value being filtered to a specific set of devices and likely by location. Maybe a total graph display under /groups may be more useful than one under /health/metric=power or /health/metric=current? Alert notification

Hello, today I have updated version 6531 to 7038 and I still receive the same alert notification every 5 minute. Is it possible to change this notification to receive this alert only once when the service is down and than when it is renewed, not repeatedly ? defaults.inc.php $config['alerts']['interval'] = '31536000'; // How frequently to re-send a notification for a continuing alert condition // In seconds. Problem on syslog with HP devices

My some server are located at Gurgaon and rest are at Chennai location. Servers located at Gurgaon are showing green circle with no. of server in map. But Others located at Chennai are showing green google map pointer icon without no. of server. I want to do change Chennai location sign ( same as Gurgaon location) ? Hi, we would like to filter alarms on our air conditioning units based on the status as many are redundant but the sensors are always on and if the unit is standby for example the temp or humidity limits can be easily raised, at his moment the sensors and status are different entities and the condition s can't be settled Any clue how to make this? Disabling polling on large number of ports

Hello list, I have just added a bunch of our end user access switches to Observium (thanks to the devs adding Nortel support!). Anyway, I don't want to be alerted or notified if those particular ports go up or down. The only way I know how to stop alerting on ports is to toggle the alerts field in the ports properties of the specific device. However, whenever I select all the ports on a device that has a large number of ports (over 300) all the ports show that they are toggled to off, then I click save. When the page refreshes I only see about two-thirds of them are toggled off, the rest of them are still set to poll or alert. When I manually toggle some ports and click save, the setting doesn't save. Any help or insight on this would be appreciated. AJ Schroeder
