More Observium integrations with rancid

So we've got rancid integration working (thanks Adam and others) in Observium for all of our Mikrotik devices and it is working great. We've got a few Ubiquiti EdgeRouters (based on Vyatta) that we'd like to get hooked up with rancid as well, but the Observium integration confuses me a bit. Do we edit the cloginrc file with the info for how to log into EdgeRouters? I would have assumed we would normally use a different group to tell rancid how to pull config's but everything is just in the Observium group. How does everyone setup rancid to pull down more than one equipment manufacturer's gear? Has anyone pulled config's through rancid into Observium from EdgeRouters? Small feature request

Hi All! One colleague of mine recently met this little (let's call it) glitch, and as he is rather new to the software, he had a hard time solving it (he had to ask me to get introduced into the concept of disabled devices, and the place to search for :)). So when one wants to add a new device, and it already exists, Observium writes a simple error message, like: "Already got device x.y.z.net." What I would like to suggest is two things: 1. make the device name in this error message clickable as anywhere else. This way the novice user can click on the host and see that it's really there 2. if the device is disabled, maybe indicate it in this message, like "Already got device x.y.z.net only disabled" This way the novice user would see why he didn't found the device in the first place. Now that I think of it again, the second one is rather overkill, but the first one would be an easy but logical advancement. Regards, Tylla

Geolocation and Mapping

Hi Guys, As some of you might already have noticed, MapQuest have changed the policies on their geolocation API, breaking our previous geolocation defaults. We briefly switched the default API to Open Street Maps, but due to the large Observium userbase they weren't able to support our request load, and we've since had to switch to Yahoo's geolocation API. If you've kept the subscription version up to date, you should already have these new defaults. The community version can change the geolocation API in the config.php, but doesn't currently support the Yahoo API, which will come in the next release. Details for settings can be found at : http://www.observium.org/docs/config_options/#syslocation-configuration Observium also has support for Yandex and Google geolocation, and though Google's geolocation works best, it can only be used with a commercial license, so that can only be enabled by organisations with such a license. This means that some addresses which previously geolocated may not geolocate properly now (each API has its own quirks when it comes to parsing addresses, so ones which worked before may not work now, and vice-versa!). We're investigating setting up our own geolocation and map imaging servers, along with switching to a new mapping library to try to remove reliance on external organisations. Thanks, adam. Any Materials for Observium new starter?

Hi All, My company just decided that we will be using Observium as the network monitoring on new network environment and the server hosting the Observium is set up and running by one of the Engineers. However, I will be the engineer managing the platform and I’m very much new to the product. More so, I have looked on the web site and Google, it seems that there aren’t enough comprehensive video or guide on how to manage the product bearing in mind that I am new to Linux platform. Please can some one point me to the right direction to get the basic materials needed for Observium? Separate emails for alerts sent to contacts

Hi, I'm looking at using Observium contacts + alerts to replace some alerting we do for customers using Nagios. Is it possible to send a separate email to the primary device contact and any additional contacts specified for alerts in the contact section rather than populating the to field with all recipients on a single email? If not would this be difficult to implement? We'd prefer not to expose the internal email address that receives our alerts to our customers if possible. Thanks, Chris

Observium boucing on ifalias

Hi there, We have a strange issue with the ifalias. We have one Juniper EX4550 with multiple customers on it. There was a bad character in the description : description "Cust: [FIBRE] {XXX} Paris - Zayo Cid:XXXXX Cable:R03110-fo-9-10�”; Observium was bouncing on the if desc. Hi observiumers.. I have a storage_perc alert which sends me a nice email when my storage is above 95%. is it somehow possible to get the actuall storage used and left included in the mail. Since its a procentage there could still be potiential 50GB og free space left.. it all depends on the original size.

Graphing sum total of Current and Power

Would it be possible to add a Total Graph for specific Heath statistics, similar to how the total graphs are displayed for Peering, Transit, and Core port types? What I am interested in is essentially adding values already collected by Observium from a handful of devices (rack PDU's) to determine the combined Current in amps and Power in watts to graph and track power consumption across an entire row or even datacenter. We can see this information per-rack from the PDU device already added to Observium, but for our datacenter managers it would be useful to track power consumption across the whole room or suite. In several of our POPs power is provided so we cannot poll the UPS itself- only our own rack PDUs connected to the facility's power bus. Even then, most have A and B side power so we have two PDUs per rack. To the end, I have created a device group by sensor sorting "pdu" device names and filtering for their output values. However, the built-in aggregate graphs show each device's data on one graph and doesn't combine them for a total. Further, my filter seems to pull many values labeled "Output" including voltage and amperage as well as wattage. Any suggestions to refine my filter to get one group for Amps and another for Watts? Please see the screenshots below. Most PDU's are APC model AP8941. I admit this would really only be useful for the "Power" and "Current" health monitors, as items like voltage and temperature are really only useful per-device. Even then, these total graphs would have the most value being filtered to a specific set of devices and likely by location. Maybe a total graph display under /groups may be more useful than one under /health/metric=power or /health/metric=current? Alert notification

Hello, today I have updated version 6531 to 7038 and I still receive the same alert notification every 5 minute. Problem on syslog with HP devices

Hi, we would like to filter alarms on our air conditioning units based on the status as many are redundant but the sensors are always on and if the unit is standby for example the temp or humidity limits can be easily raised, at his moment the sensors and status are different entities and the condition s can't be settled Any clue how to make this? Disabling polling on large number of ports

Hello list, I have just added a bunch of our end user access switches to Observium (thanks to the devs adding Nortel support!). Anyway, I don't want to be alerted or notified if those particular ports go up or down. The only way I know how to stop alerting on ports is to toggle the alerts field in the ports properties of the specific device. However, whenever I select all the ports on a device that has a large number of ports (over 300) all the ports show that they are toggled to off, then I click save. When the page refreshes I only see about two-thirds of them are toggled off, the rest of them are still set to poll or alert. When I manually toggle some ports and click save, the setting doesn't save. Any help or insight on this would be appreciated. AJ Schroeder

added a HP server over snmp

Hi all, I have just added a HP server. added SNMP and set it up. The server connected fine to observium. Now i see Observium has support for HP but the data im getting is pretty mandatory server stuff so im wondering what the HP support is added? or did i do it wrong? As an example i was hoping to get some RAID info on the RAID 1 running on the server with the controller that was shipped. But all i see is C:\ which won't alert me if a disk fail.

We got an Aficio MP C305 Printer where we want to get a monthly automated report of printed pages (bw/color) based on a per user basis (addressbook / print code) to make a print accounting possible. We still can count total numbers (also of all in one types like fax, copy, print and divided in colour/bw counts), but no counts on a per user basis. Does anybody knows whether it is generally possible to have per user counts (based on printer addressbook and user print code) and if so is there an oid? We do not need that functionality directly in observium… cause this is not monitoring but reporting, but it would be nice to get them via snmp automated monthly. New Install Alerts Rebuild not Matching

Guys, We've done a fresh install for a customer and created a sample offline rule however when we run the rebuild the output states it matched however under the alert checks the device count is still 0 We've just recreated the DB and all devices with the same outcome. geomapping stopped to work

Hello, geomapping stopped to work after (I think) a svn update. With the same overidden (working well) location configured in about 100 devices, the new devices are not mapped (message: not found) the geolocalization is enabled. I solved with the lat, lot values. Geolocation bugs

Hi Adam and everyone! I have two small bugs to report. I'm using Observium CE 0.15.6.6430, I'm closely following the mail list, but if the below mentioned glitches/bugs were between solved, then sorry for wasting your time. 1. I had this problem for longer, but now I found the way to formulate it properly. We have sysLocation strings alike this: Qualitis Iroda / Iroda - 1131 Budapest, Béke utca 116 [47.541773,19.085868] Now when I check the "Geolocation" tab in the "Device Settings" I see following in the "Last Update Status": Geocoding ENABLED, try detect device coordinates: by REVERSE query (API: MAPQUEST, LAT: 47.541773, LON: 19.085868) - FOUND GEO API REQUEST: http://open.mapquestapi.com/nominatim/v1/reverse.php?format=json&accept-lan… GEOLOCATION: Hungary (Country), Unknown (State), Budapesti kistérség (County), Budapest (City) GEO COORDINATES: 47.54163 (Latitude), 19.0859 (Longitude) The problem as I see, is that after using the coordinates given in the sysLocation string to make a reverse query to lookup the Country, State, County etc., the geocoding API returns some coordinates which corresponds to THEIR found geolocation. But the geocoding API sometimes can give really offset coordinates, especially for some bigger sites, where it gives back the entrance. So if there are coordinates specified in sysLocation, then they should be used to pinpoint the device, no matter what the geocoding API says. PS: the documentation also says: "But observium anyway will store in DB specified coordinates." But this is currently not true. 2. I stumbled upon this while trying to get the data out of the Last Update Status Field for previous bug. The fields in the "Geolocation" tab in the "Device Settings" are marked with attribute disabled="disabled", and if something should be made writable, then this attribute is removed. I would suggest using the readonly attribute, as that would enable focusing and selecting from the given field. Not to mention the pure logic would tell the same, those fields are unmodifiable, so readonly should be used. Regards, Attila

Missing memory history

I recently made some device changes and ran *discovery.php -h all* and *poller.php -h all*. Shortly after that I noticed that on one Windows 7 Pro box I'm monitoring, I no longer have any physical memory in the memory graph, just virtual memory. The entire history of it disappeared, and it hasn't started new or anything like that. I checked permissions on that workstation's rrd directory, and all looks good. I do have some backups of the rrd directories. Should I restore?

Been hacking around with rancid for a bit and stuck on this step: Run this command to create the folder structure: su - rancid /var/lib/rancid/bin/rancid-cvs It is asking for a password, presumably for rancid, which we don't have. Support for EMC Isilon & NetApp cDOT

Hi! I saw on an old thread that it's a know fact that NetApp cDOT doesn't work well, apparently due to changes in the MIB from NetApp so they don't use the normal structure anymore. A case was opened with NetApp.....was there any traction on that so far ? Secondly, with Isilon it does pull a lot of info by default, but due to Isilon using something called SmartConnect which basically is a round-robin DNS, if you use the cluster name you get a new node every time which confuses Observium quite a lot. Is there a way to make it somehow consolidate or average the data from all nodes in a cluster so I don't have to create each node individually ? /Jesper

Match for Cisco routers but not switches?

I am looking to create an alert checker to send an alert when an Ethernet interface on a Cisco IOS router goes down- for example when the router is still up and available in monitoring, but a physical link is down due to a local switch failure, carrier CPE down, peer (unamanaged) router down... We receive syslogs of course, but these can occasionally get lost in the flood and not noticed as actionable by NOC staff. Is there an effective way to make a device match for Cisco routers, but not Cisco switches? The OS type both show up as "ios", and I haven't found something router-specific to successfully match on. I can do this individually by device name, but unfortunately our naming scheme isn't specific enough to match them all with *rt* or *wan or similar. As you can see below, I set the device match to "os equals ios" which includes switches that have a ton of link-down-but-enabled ports on them! Thank you, Andrew [image: Inline image 2]

Show client *rate* on wireless clients graph

I'm using Observium to track wireless clients on our Cisco wireless controller. It's very useful. However, when I look at the longer-term graphs (monthly, yearly etc.) it's less useful because I'm not sure what it's showing. Is it clients per day, per week or what? And the result is all my devices are not in the same group, I cannot do something because the regional settings are automatically filled and managed by Observium, from the name of the town (as I set in the snmp parameters of my devices). Error Drawing Graph

Hi All, I'm seeing "error drawing graph" on several of our Cisco ASR's interfaces, so I'm hoping someone coupe point me in the right direction. I'm running Centos 6.6 with the latest rrdtool rrdtool-1.3.8-7.el6-x86_64 and CE version 0.15.6.6430. I've removed the specific graph rrd file then run the following two commands for debugging purposes. php ./discovery.php -d -h router.local.com php ./poller.php -d -h router.local.com. The file is 0 bytes for some reason. Oddly enough two of the three interfaces issues are with BDI interfaces. The weird part is there is one BDI interface on each box that is displaying correctly. Let me know if you any anything else to assist in troubleshooting. Hi all, I will be accessing my observium from the outside. Therefore i have installed my wildcard cert and enabled https... my problem is when i recive the alert email from observium for some machine. in the email there is a link under device so that i can easily access the server and see what is wrong. my problem is per default the url starts with http and not https. and so the tunnel is not encrypted. How do i change this behaviour?

Tape Libraries in observium

Hi, has anyone ever tried to add tape libraries in observium? I have an HP MSL6030 and a Dell TL2000 here that i tried to add, but there is no support at all for them yet. I don't know where to start to even try to add some basic information about these devices so i have some reading and catching up to do. Juniper stack polling - better but still hurting

Hello all, Moving forward with our POC, and almost everything is perfect...the one thing that's still nagging us is the long polling times for our Juniper switch stacks. Our newest QFX 5k 96s 2-member stacks are now down under 300 seconds after upping max-requests to 70 (~230 seconds now), but our older EX stacks are still taking longer than the polling interval (~330 seconds) to complete. I realize it's the length of time that the Junipers take to handle the snmpbulkwalk of IfEntry and IfEntryX, but has anyone come up with a workaround to date? Obviously stripping OIDs out of the standard MIBs is not a solution because it could break other devices, but is there a possibility I could create an "IfEntry-lite" version that would be exclusive to the EX platform? Or even a custom poller that uses JunoScript instead of snmp? I'm looking for any reasonable solution, even if it takes some work to implement. Thanks! Hello list, Let me get this out of the way; I am not a developer. Anyway, I have the pleasure of supporting a network that has older Nortel and Avaya devices on it. I've added them to observium and as expected they are showing up as generic devices. I browsed through the developer section on how to add new device support and I have followed those steps and have added some very basic support for Nortel switches (OS version and Serial Number) First question - would this extra support be of any interest to the Observium devs? I'd like to add more meaningful information such as CPU/Memory utilization, flash usage, etc. However, that step appears to be a bit more challenging. Second question - is this documented somewhere or do I need to "reverse engineer" this support from the existing scripts? Any help or suggestions are appreciated. Thanks, AJ Schroeder

unix agent issues

Trying to get the unix agent setup on a machine with bind to test it out. The scripts for Observium and bind are working on the local machine, but Observium isn't showing the modules. The module is enabled for the device but when trying to telnet from Observium, we're just getting "Connection closed by foreign host." Xinetd is running and listening on the port but isn't responding correctly. There are some typos on the agent installation page on the site (/usr/lib vs /usr/bin) and in the xinetd conf file, but we seem to have those straightened out. Anyone have any tricks up your sleeves for getting the agent to be happy with life? ufw/iptables is off for testing on Ubuntu 14.04 and we're running the subscription edition. Hi all, I'm looking at adding a few 100 devices to Observium shortly. I don't see any issue adding them, as I can use a filename structured as requested. This is for a few clients of ours, I'd like to trial observium as a customer facing solution. Add a user to view their devices only. Is there a way to script giving a user access to so many devices ? poller.php burns all available CPU in the last community edition

After upgrading a somewhat outdated version Observium CE 0.13.10.4585 to CE 0.15.6.6430 (under PHP 5.5.28), the poller.php started burning excessive CPU: eight running pollers on an 8-CPU machine started burning 100% of available CPU time instead of a few percents as before. They somehow still managed to get their job done, but just barely so in five minutes, and often missing the time slot. While watching the behaviour for a day and learning PHP profiling along the way, I now have an explanation and a solution. Apology if this has been reported before, couldn't find any such report. The problem is in a function external_exec() in includes/common(.inc).php, which has been rewritten some time between these two versions, now switching to a common loop waiting with a stream_select() on two pipes (stdout and stderr) from a spawned snmp*walk process. The documentation on stream_select helps understanding the issue: http://php.net/manual/en/function.stream-select.php read The streams listed in the read array will be watched to see if characters become available for reading (more precisely, to see if a read will not block - in particular, a stream resource is also ready on end-of-file, in which case an fread() will return a zero length string). So what happens is that when a spawned snmp* command closes its stderr but not yet its stdout, the external_exec() goes in a spin: feof($pipes[1]) is false but stream is not yet ready for reading, however the feof($pipes[2]) is true and hence the stream_select() returns right away and reports $pipes[2] as ready. Then the fread($pipes[2]) is called, returns an empty string (because stderr is at eof), and the whole loop busily goes around, until the time the snmp command happens to terminate. Cisco ASR Zone Based Firewall graphing

Hi Observium team, I recently installed Observium and got it running on a bunch of devices. I am now trying to get it to graph zone based firewall stats on Cisco ASR and also ISR. When I go into settings on the devices and click to enable the firewall graph it seems to enable, but then when I go and look again it is back to disabled. Am I missing anything? Availability Graphing

Hi all I have looked around but don't see any information around availability graphing. What we are looking for is a graph per device that can show if there have been any communication drops? I suppose alerts based on packetloss will tell us if there have been issues, but it would be nice to retrospectively go back a day or week etc. Sent from my iPhone

A few Questions Regarding Observium

Hi All So a few questions around the paid subscription and supported devices etc. In the paid version we have more frequent updates, I assume that some of the issues I see now with supported devices may well be already fixed, I would be interested to hear from any paid subscription users what your experiences are, either on or off list is fine with me. We are really impressed with the support level on the Cisco equipment. Obviously the more useful the MIB files are and the devices support for SNMP the more information is obtainable by Observium. We do however make use of other vendor equipment that is not on the supported list and although the basics of these devices work, more information would / could be available based on the device and the MIB files. We make use of EdgeCore / Accton switches, Alcoma Microwave equipment, and Ubiquiti, First off Ubiquiti support seems spotty, I see the FROGFOOT MIBs seem to be the default and although the UBNT MIBs are in the mibs directory I have not at yet seen a device that seems to use the UBNT MIBs. I would love to see RSSI noise, Capacity etc, obviously dependant on the radio / MIB ability, a few years ago we used Cacti and there was a plugin that did support the radio levels etc for the Stations so it must be possible via SNMP. Unless I am missing something I don't see these graphs. I know that UBNT’s SNMP support have generally been crap to say the least, combine that with some “interesting” hardwarre snmp v1…. Tough Switch and the quasi 5 or 8 port setup that is actually only 2 ports etc etc. Alcoma is a fairly extensively used radio in both the licensed and ISM bands and they do have a fairly comprehensive looking MIB, we would be very interested in having much more detailed graphing and monitoring. EdgeCore These switches also offer a fairly extensive MIB file and support. We would be happy to look at paying for development work to be done to support these hardware platforms if we decide to use Observium. How to we go about requesting development work to be done? Just a side note. We use the new airfibre radios and have noticed that Observium shows the in-band managed IP (management vlan) to show as down, even though this is the IP that Observium gets the SNMP details / polling from, I will check the bugs and see if this has been logged as yet. This seems to happen when port was ignored after an alert check has been created, to fix this we have to delete and re-create alert check each time port needs to be ignored. windows servers not showing under servers

Hi all, When i go to Device -> servers I only see my linux servers My windows servers doesn't show.. Only when i remove server option in device type and click search do i see them. Why is that? the windows server has the type=server so i don't get why i don't see it when searching for servers?

Hi all, Does anyone know how to override the ‘ifAlias’ setting? Just like the ‘sysLocation’? We have a lot of network devices which are not able to give a port description, what is very annoying cause we have to go physical to a switch to find out which device is behind the port. Multiple CPU

Guys, I have checked the guides however Not seeing how to configure CPU alerting based on multiple CORE CPU's. We have quite a number of windows virtual machines with 2 - 16+ cores and currently use "processor_usage greater 65" however this is alerting when a single core reaches >65% What is the best way to manage this? Hello, We've just started a POC project to determine if Observium is a good fit for our environment, and so far have been very pleased with the feature-richness and general usability of the entire system. In fact, we've discovered several things in our environment that were immediately addressable. Cheers! One thing that's been a head-scratcher for us so far is the length of the polling time for our Juniper switches...anywhere from ~2 mins for a 48 port EX ToR switch, to 8 minutes for a two-member QFX aggregate switch. It's the port polling that's so costly according to the output of the poller script, around 450 seconds on the QFXs. I've tried some basic troubleshooting...disabling MAC accounting, disabling all ports for polling/alerting, etc...but it hasn't helped. Is there something simple I'm missing in the config that's causing it to bog down on the port module? Aside from the time, it's not hurting the QFXs, but our poor EX4500s sometimes spike to 90% CPU during polling. For context, the Observium POC system is located in the same datacenter as the devices we're polling against, and the QFXs are 96 port 5ks, with uplinks to our EX ToR switches. Any ideas/suggestions you have would be much appreciated! Also, I did add support for Baytech PDUs; if there's interest, I'd be happy to provide the code. Aaron

Device shown as down after change of ip address - DNS works.

Hello, i had to change the ip address of one server from 192.168.102.21 to 192.168.102.40. After that the server is shown as down. DNS works so far, dns resolution from observium gives me the new address. Im sure it is a small problem, but i have no clue. Do i have to make a rediscover and if so how? THX in advance ecaroh
