Device Alerts on the Frontpage

Guys, I have a question regarding alerts showing up on the frontpage. I have alerts coming to me via email when I have a alert checker looking at the memory going above 50% (testing this operation). But on the frontpage I do not see this show up in either the status boxes or under the device alerts section. I search around and can not find anything that I changed that would prevent this from showing up on the frontpage. I am sure I did something, but just not sure what? Any pointers or direction to start looking would be appreciated. Thanks, Aaron

Linux Memory Alerts

Hi all, We're running PE 0.15.7.6539, it seems no matter what I set thresholds for on memory utilization for cached (I can ignore this..) and physical memory. I can look at the graphs and set thresholds to 90-95% and always get alarms. Any ideas or advice? virtual hosts stats

All, Is it possible to display traffic for several hosts ? Now I can see only the compete traffic for the http service, I would like to see the traffic for each virtual host. Or give me some pointers to get me on the way, BTW i’m not a programmer only a system engineer. Thanks

Dear Observium Team,, We need your support on this, we try to install MIB's from Eltek(power supply tool) in Observium. We did receive the MIB's from Eltek. After install the MIB's and reboot we see that the system is trying to Read the Eltek MIB's but we see that OID's in the system are not recognized. Is there a way how we can solve this problem, do we need to add some script in Observium to make it work? You support is more than welcome! Kind Regards, Dave Bats

mysql_fetch_array replacement?

Hi, After the SVN up on the 18th July the script we use for generating the Smokeping targets stopped producing any data (the list of slightly reformatted hostnames). DD-WRT question

Hi, I run Observium on my home network, so appreciate the CE Edition (CE 0.15.6.6430). I have 2 dd-wrt based switches, and I remember when they were first discovered by Observium quite a while back, they displayed a dd-wrt logo on the device list. This hasn't occurred for a while now, and I just was interested to know if it is possible for this to happen? Screen shots attached fyi (hopefully they won't get stripped). Scaling adjustment for UPS sensors

Hi, Is there a way to adjust the re-scaling for auxiliary UPS sensors? We’ve just been given some external sensors for our Riello units to play with; and whilst Observium can indeed see them, their temperatures are out by one decimal place: [cid:image001.png@01D0B4D2.A73E1560] (it should be 19.5C, obviously) The RH is fine interestingly, and this is only affecting the ‘external’ sensors in the NetMan card, not the built-in sensor. Interestingly, Riello also give out the ‘chassis’ temperature under the ‘battery’ temperature OID, which is why it shows our batteries as 27 degrees, they are not - and this is not Observium’s fault ☺ Anyway, is there a manual ‘tweak’ to correct the scaling for the temperature? We saw the same thing when we tested SolarWinds, so it’s definitely on the HP side. Pending me to get HP to actually fix the bug, can you think of a way I can suppress these messages, either filtering them out or limiting the SNMP response? We recently installed Observium and we’re receiving messages from the majority of our C7000 Virtual connects in the event log that look like this: 2015-07-03 06:28:32 lag27 Interface changed: [ifSpeed] 10000000000 -> 40000000000; [ifHighSpeed] 10000 -> 40000 2015-07-03 06:23:31 lag27 Interface changed: [ifSpeed] 40000000000 -> 10000000000; [ifHighSpeed] 40000 -> 10000 2015-07-02 23:58:34 lag27 Interface changed: [ifSpeed] 10000000000 -> 40000000000; [ifHighSpeed] 10000 -> 40000 2015-07-02 23:53:38 lag27 Interface changed: [ifSpeed] 40000000000 -> 10000000000; [ifHighSpeed] 40000 -> 10000 These VC’s have a 4 port LACP group to the core switch. I see nothing in the system log on either side that would indicate the interface speed is actually changing (link downs, errors) or other SNMP errors, so I’m inclined to think these message can be ignored. Any thoughts? If it’s a bug in the HP SNMP implementation on the VC’s I can submit a ticket. Otherwise I’d like to find a way to suppress them if I can. Configuring map interface on new observium installation

Hi, I have just installed & configured observium for the first time. The first two devices are added and seems working, but I'm having problem displaying these devices on the map. All the time there is a blue sign on the middle on Atlantic ocean, it doesn't matter what I configure as device location. Please any idea how to configure the map? I have tried all the possible configurations at /opt/observium/config.php settings but with no success. Device Storage graphs draw errors when in widescreen mode

Hi, I have noticed an issue with the device filesystems graphs : they do not display correctly in widescreen mode. The RRD command/debug says : RRDTool Output: ERROR: Legend too long But if I paste the actual rrd command in the terminal, it runs fine and the output graph is correct too. It seems to be only happening with the filesystems usage graphs. The failed port filter is broken after update to 6535

Hello there, after I upgraded to 6535, I noticed that the "ports down" filter doesn't work anymore. I have a couple of ports down at the moment, in the status box. But if I click on that red 2, then I get all ports down in the network, including the ignored ones. But I actually have a second issue too. I also noticed that if I make an account for a customer, with restricted access to their ports only, observium will still show them the global regex for the alerting systems, but also forbidden menu items, such as the groups, which give the normal users access to too sensitive information. It looks like the permission filtering in the alerts box is not really working the same way as in the status box on the left, same happens in the menus on top. I had to remove the groups in order to preserve our customers privacy, even though I found them very useful. Is there an available solution for the above already? "Interface changed:" events

Hi, Since the scheduled SVN at 06:00 this morning we seem to be getting these for all of our (old, very) 3Com 2948 switches: They occur on every poll, for every port, and are currently spamming the event log. Anyone have any ideas? I've just done a forced SVN up to 6518 but it's still occurring. My guess is it happened around 6514 which was what it was running this morning when it appears to have started. Installing JpGraph blanks out bills page

Hello, I just installed jpgraph to get the bills page to stop prompting the "please install jpgraph" notice, and as soon as I removed the "includes/jpgraph/src/jpg-config.inc.php" file, as request, the bills page stopped loading. It's just blank. I've restarted apache and nothing in the error or access logs are pointing me in any direction. Any help to trouble shoot will be appreciated. All I did was download the jpgraph-3.5.0b1.tar.gz<http://jpgraph.net/download/download.php?p=5> file, unzip it and move it into the specified folder, and remove the config file as requested. PoE support?

I was asked if we could display PoE details on switches and said "I'm sure we can!" and proceeded to find out, no, not quite yet. From what I can tell, support is only partially in place -- is that accurate? I found the global config param needed and set it, and it looks like data is collecting in RRD files, but they are not included in the device display. Is this just an in-progress thing? Hi All I had a look into the Cisco IP local pool MIB, as we have IP Pools on our LNS for the DSL Customers. It would be nice if we could monitor the usage of these pools in Observium. I looked around in the code, but found no similar discoverer/poller to start with. There seams no sensor type to fit such values. Can anyone give me a hint? Or is already someone working on that? Juniper EX4550 - Snmp issue

Hello, Since 2 or 3 months I have some issue with some of our EX4550. For some reason,, some of the switches are just polling from time to time ( first 2 screencap ) and others are just not polling ( 3 - 4 -5 ) the funny thing is : I don’t have this issue on cacti ( the switches are also polled from Cacti ) I have 3 Junos version running on the backbone and only 3 out of 20 ex4450 have this issue ( and they don’t have the same junos version ). The filter on the loopback interfaces are exactly the same. I can have the arp table, the lldp and bgp/ospf neig but not the if graphing … I already restarted snmp and tried many other thing on the juniper itself. Thanks, Raphael

MySQL App Graphics of only one device don't work anymore

Hi, Today I had to restart a VM and when I checked the Statistics I saw that the MySQL graphics of the VM don't work anymore since last week: [image: Inline images 1] The MySQL Graphics of other devices are working properly but this one. Nothing was changed on that VM ever since. I tried to run the discovery and poller script in Debug mode and I found no errors (maybe I'm blind). I renamed and deleted the rrd Files, deactivated and re-activated the Agent for this specific App, and nothing. Alert Checker Up/Down Dependency

Hey, Is there a way to create an alert checker that will only report devices down if a device they are behind is up? We have remote offices with 100's of devices, and if there is a WAN issue, we receive 100's of alerts from Observium for that location. Is there a way to create a condition in an alert checker that a device (ex: router) has to be in an "up" status in order for devices behind it to alert as "down" That way if the Router/WAN is "down" we would only get that alert, not all the other devices. Example: This Alert Checker only alerts on devices in TN Entity Type: Device Check Conditions: device_status equals 0 Device Match: location match *TN* Entity Match: * Alert Delay 1 Example: This Alert Checker only alerts on devices in CA when the Router (specific device) is "up" Entity Type: Device Check Conditions: A Specific Device status equals 1 // check that office WAN router is "up" (I know this not a correct syntax, just example) device_status equals 0 //check that device is down AND Device Match: location match *CA* Entity Match: * Alert Delay 2 Cheers! Correction of uptime-spikes?

Hi all Im monitoing a Windows server that is scheduled to reboot daily. But the "Uptime" graph is showing odd spikes that cannot possibly reflect actual values. SVN commit mail crashed our mail server

Hello, the SVN commit mail from the observium-svn list yesterday (2015-06-04 16:46:51 +0200) crashed our mail server, most likely because the subject was way too long. I don't know, what script/hook you are using, but the standard in RFC 2822, section 2.1.1. states that "Each line of characters MUST be no more than 998 characters, and SHOULD be no more than 78 characters, excluding the CRLF" The subject of said mail was way over 2000 characters. For now I unsubscribed from that list because I don't want to kill e-mail for everybody in the office once in a while, but can you have a look into this issue and tell me when it is fixed, so I can resubscribe? Alert to monitor cisco ARP table

We want an alert when a new mac address is added to an access port. I did some more research and I got the switch to send a Mac-Notification-Change trap to the server. Is there an easy way to implement this? I am testing with snmptrapd daemon. I assume once the server receives the trap it can be re-routed to syslog-ng and brought into Observium. Switch --> Server (udp 162) -->Script/Program that re-routes -->Server (udp 514) --> syslog-ng -->Observium instance I was also struggling with the TRAP payload, the mac, port index and vlan weren't part of the message. Do I need the CISCO-MAC-NOTIFICATION-MIB? Thank you.

My graphs don't work - all values "-NAN"

If we don't see the sensor returned in the agent output, it'll be removed. If it reappears, it'll be readded. It's likely a timing thing with hddtemp causing that sensor to be occasionally not returned correctly. Adam. hdd temperature sensor keeps vanishing ?

Hi All, hoping someone has seen this issue I’m having for some mad reason the HDD temperature sensor on one our of servers keeps disappearing ? but whats mad is the event log is showing the Entity as BLANK ? and another mad thing I’ve noticed is when it gets re-added or updated the HIGH and LOW keep getting adjusted to 0, so i have to all the time go and manually adjust the values? is it possible a problem with hddtemp, observium, or something else I’m just missing? I have attached a screenshot showing what I mean regards Simon

Hello, I am currently using an installation of Observium that works very well. I installed rsyslog according to this link : http://www.observium.org/wiki/Rsyslog_Syslog_Server I tried upgrading it for the first time to the most recent version, and everything seemed to work fine, but after a few hours syslogs stopped showing in the web interface. They do still arrive to the machine according to tcpdump. I rolled back the server and it worked again, even for a week now. After upgrading it again it does the same, works for a while and then stops. So I have 2 questions: 1: Where are syslogs saved? In the mysql database? 2: Did anything change regarding to syslog in the major version? I did notice a new logs folder. Thanks This message has been scanned for malware by Websense. www.websense.com

rrdtool 1.5.3 not working

Hi All, I’ve just updated to new RRDTool 1.5.3, but for some reason I’m getting a Draw Error BUT only looking at network traffic graphs, not temperatures, CPU, etc… the Performance & Output is showing RRDTool Output: ERROR: Unused Arguments "" in command : AREA:inbits0#B6D14B:ether01-efm Rx: Total time: 0.026 | RRDtool time: 0.012s any ideas? regards Simon

Missing graph data

I had a problem with the machine Observium is running on. The CPU fan/heatsink fell off. After I got the machine up again on the evening of 11 June, the CPU Temp graph showed normal temps in the 30-45 range for months, then a big spike up to 115. (eek!) But at least the server came back to life, and I still had all my data. Everything still seems to be running OK, but all of a sudden there is now no data at all in the CPU temp graph before ~1:00AM 12 June. From this machine I get temp readings for CPU temp, Motherboard temp, and 4 other "temp#" listings. "Temp1" and "Temp3" still seem to have the data they should, but the others are missing. One thing I did change after the recovery: I noticed the time zone on the server was set to US Eastern, and I changed it to US Central. I would think if that was the cause of my problem it would hit a lot more of the data.

Adding Custom Information

I have created extended snmp info, but can't find any way to attach that to the polling agent. Deleting sensors and graphs from a device

Hi all, I have added an extremely pared down copy of a device to Observium and am using it strictly to be able to monitor BGP sessions inside a VRF context. I have disabled all sensors, modules, graphs, etc from the device configuration, but it seems that any sensors and graphs that were created before these settings were disabled are still present on the device’s page. How can I turf all the graphs and sensors and all that stuff from these devices? Thanks!

Hi. After trying to upgrade to Community Edition version 0.15.6 i cant update the database. root@observium /# /opt/observium/discovery.php -h all MySQL Error: Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: NO) Have done this regularly, but it seems it lost its config on root permisions on the DB I have different passwords on my root and root for MySQL I have no problem logging in to the web admin for PHPMyAdmin with my Mysql password for root. Any clues? Is there a scipt for roolback? Best regards Einar

Port alerts that dont exist

IOS XR snmp-server context for monitoring BGP sessions inside a VRF

Hi, I understand that the current BGP MIB doesn’t support VRF contexts for pulling BGP session info for sessions that exist inside a VRF. I have IOS XR boxes that house my vrf BGP sessions, and apparently there is an snmp-context command that has proven to be able to work around the MIB limitations. My question is whether or not anyone within the Observium community has tried to do this. From what I gather, it requires a separate SNMP community on the IOS XR box to perform the context mapping, but that would seem to imply that one needs to duplicates the node in question in Observium with the new community. I haven’t actually tried any of this yet...

Environmental monitoring on an APC Smart-UPS

I have an APC Smart-UPS 1500 with a network management card that includes environmental monitoring. When Observium discovers the device the battery temperature is displayed, but not the temperature from the probe connected to the management card. Speaking from my perspective, the discovery script found the multiple temperature sensors and properly added them into the display. I would expect that the developers are going to want to see the debug results of the discovery script run against your UPS, so that would be a good next step. Hi All, Has anyone had an issue where not all devices running OSPF appeared in the "Routing" tab? I have 5 Nexus 7K switches which are all identically configured but only 3 are showing in OSPF tab (all are neighbours). Is there any debug I can run to find out why this isn't working? For example I have an interface which is showing Packets/sec Now Avg Min Max Errors Rx 0.00 0.00 0.00 0.00 Tx 3.22m 898.64u 0.00 3.23m Discards Rx 0.00 0.00 0.00 0.00 Tx 0.00 0.00 0.00 0.00 Am I right in saying this interface is not discarding any packets, but is encountering errors when transmitting? As for the values of 3.22m and 898.64u are these absolute values, e.g. 3.22 errors a second? Or because of the m is it 0.00322 errors a second? Problems after SVN upgrade

We are currently running: Observium 0.14.11.6003 Apache 2.2.22 (Ubuntu) PHP 5.3.10-1ubuntu3.15 MySQL 5.5.40-0ubuntu0.12.04.1 SNMP NET-SNMP 5.4.3 RRDtool 1.4.7 I navigated to the /opt/observium directory and ran: svn update This succeed then I proceeded to run: root@observium:/opt/observium# ./discovery.php -u Observium 0.14.11.6003 Discovery PHP Fatal error: Call to undefined function print_obsolete_config() in /opt/observium/discovery.php on line 48 At this point everything seemed fine so far as logging in, the graphing etc. I then rebooted the server for good measure. When it came back up, I could hit the login screen and authenticate, but beyond that, a blank screen. Any ideas?

I can resell your trust a licence on purchase order basis I suppose, but there would be a small markup involved for the processing & 42-60 days credit your purchasing department will invariably want. It might be worth pointing out this route will cost more - that seemed to be the requisite incantation for purchasing to fess up to having a card last time I did this dance. But you need to compile your own wmic on your Observium server and copy it to /usr/bin. Hi, Just a quick couple of questions. I've been off the list for a bit. - I want to purchase a sub for Observium, but being public sector we have some weird ways of paying for things. Who should the purchasing department contact? - Does the WMI stuff work for exchange? I send a mail about it a while back, and it certainly would be useful to us, or at least pointers to how the wmi framework function would be good so I can do some scripting myself. Any ideas if the wmi scripts work for 2010 exchange - I've only seen anything done via powershell there.. Thanks Andy

IP SLA

Hello, I am using the observium professional edition and I’ve been looking into configuring IP SLA on all my cisco devices to monitor our WAN. I have the following config on two devices to just test the waters Destination device config ip sla responder source device config ip sla 1 udp-jitter 10.34.36.2 16384 source-ip 10.34.36.1 frequency 300 ip sla schedule 1 start-time now My question is what does the community do as a best practice for IP SAL configurations. As I have it configure now it’s send 10 packets every 5 minutes. This seems like a bad idea because what if there was a network blip between the 5 minute run time? If there was packet loss I would like observium to detect it, and send out an alert. Do I need to configure the ip sla service to constantly run? And if so how do I make sure all that data is there when observium polls it next. —Jeff
