Anyone have an alert check for latency to a device? Is it possible? aggregate alert emails?

Hi, Is it possible to aggregate alert emails? When a switch does fail, it might generate thousands of alerts. For our case maybe even thousands of txt messages to a pager. Is it possible to configure observium to detect such kind of massive alerts and aggregate them to only send a few alerts out? Thanks. —Zhenhui

Bad location - lat\long?

I put the lat/long that GMaps reports for a given location into the SNMP location. When I search for that lat\long in GMaps, it goes to the correct location. When I look at the Observium map, it's about 2 miles off, straight south. Map questions

Hi I have a couple of questions about the google map on Observium: 1. Is there away to have the map center on a point and zoom into that point to a certain level of zoom, as the default. The reason I ask is we have most of our infra-structure in a single city, and a few "interconnection / peering pop's" in other states. For normal use we would prefer that the default location and zoom level be on our core service city. 2. Is there away to have a KML/KMZ file added into the map being displayed by Observium. For example, it would be handing to show our fiber ring along with the tear drop icons that Observium displays. As extra credit it would be nice to render a polygon either Green, Yellow or Red depending on status.... Thanks

I believe this can be marked as resolved. All of our devices were listed as offline this morning, which was caused by the following: http://www.observium.org/wiki/FAQs#All_my_hosts_seem_down_to_Observium_.2F_… I followed the guide, and removed .index from the noted directory. As soon as I did that, everything started polling again. At around the same time, I also found this: http://www.observium.org/wiki/Poller-wrapper.py Our poller was set to use 3 threads, so I bumped it up to 12. After review, I found that my alert checker was now listing devices as checking in and passing the offline test. I faked an outage on a test device, which triggered the e-mail alert. Thanks again for the assistance on this. I'll have to dig into the snmp bug a little bit, but all is now working as it should. Tom, Thank you very much for looking at my configuration. I failed to note earlier, that I receive the same results when I change the delay of this alert back down to 0. For the sake of my own sanity though, I went back and changed it just now. I triggered a false device outage, which failed to trigger the alert. Something odd I am seeing, is that Observium is now listing 8 devices as having passed the alert check, with 464 devices still listed as never checked. Script to discovery and poll new devices

Hello, I have a quick simple script to go through a text file and add_device, discovery it and poll it. However the only portion that works fine is the add_device. the discovery nor poller.php is actually doing what it should. however If I run the command separately outside of the script it discovers the device as well as polls it. the host name is right because I'm using echo within the script to show the name for each loop. If i use ./disocvery.php -h new that works fine and I guess it's a work around, however ./poller.php -h new does not work. below is the script I'm running. while read host do echo $host /opt/observium/add_device.php $host /opt/observium/discovery.php -h $host /opt/observium/poller.php -h $host done < Servers/dailyserverlist.txt

Sliding window in graph views

Good day, all When viewing graphs, I often find that we want to keep a specific graph open for a long period - days or weeks even, and preferably to view the most recent information. A minor issue is that when clicking on the pre-provided thumbnails for the "6 Hours", "24 Hours", et al. graphs, it opens a specific time window. If the page is refreshed after a while, it shows old data rather than current data. A sliding window works already - just that probably very few people know about the "feature". Adam and Joe, Thank you for your feedback on this. It would be nice to have a few default alerts built directly into the platform. That said, I understand that the time needed to implement something like that could be hard to reserve. As for the configuration I submitted, does the behavior of the alert seem to be correct? I was curious of up / down alerting was implemented (as the walkthrough suggests), but has yet to be verified as fully functional. I have an alert that checks for half-duplex interfaces, and it works like a charm. Observium will send off e-mails every 5 minutes about it, but I get nothing about a device status being up or down. We have What's Up Gold taking care of these alerts for now, but that's really all that it's doing. I?ve been working on this on and off for the past few days now, and I?ve had no success in generating an offline alert. The alert log shows the test as failed, but delayed. It seems on the alert settings, on the association part, if you configure more than 1 associations, only the very last one can be modified or deleted. Other associations above the last line, if you click either modify or delete, there’s no effect.

How do I set an alert so that if a switch port without a description is not alerted on? I have descriptions on all ports that I want to monitor. I can't shut the others because some should always be up. Logic: If AdminInterface and PortStatus is Down AND PortDescription = "" then Alert Me This is what I have now. I can filter things that have some form of a description but I'm not sure how to use a description that is blank. See image below. junos logical sub interface state

Hi, I shutdown all unused ports to make the alerter life easier. But after I done so, all good except ae ports sub interfaces still shows on observium as failed even though the main ae physical ports already administratively down. For instace, ae11: show interfaces ae11 Physical interface: ae11, Administratively down, Physical link is Down But observium still complain ae11.0 failed check: show interfaces ae11.0 Logical interface ae11.0 (Index 153) (SNMP ifIndex 982) How do we ignore logical interfaces when setting up alerter? Observium SNMP polling crashes various Adtran devices

Hi, We recently installed Observium in an effort to replace our aging Cacti and Nagios systems. We are running the latest code checked out of SVN (We paid the money to Adam for the Professional Version) Today we added 180+ Adtran based devices to the system. All 180+ devices began rebooting. They would become stable for a few hours and then start rebooting again. Important to note that most of these items have been in our network for 3+ years, are running recent code, and have been rock solid stable for their entire service life. Cacti and Nagios poll them every minute and have been doing so for the past 3 years. Insert Observium and the devices start failing. My initial feeling is that there is something in the way Observium does its SNMP. Curious if anyone else has experienced this or something like this. Its caused us to halt putting more devices on Observium. Ok, I added ifDescr !match *.* In the condition, seems working. Although I don¹t feel that clean about it. I would like to only care about physical interface, not logical. But I tried all snmp mibs in the mib list, none of them I found tell you it¹s a logical interface. So I rely on the pattern *dot* in junos to indicate a logical port. Hmm. That's a lot of I/O time. Seems it's unfeasible to do at the same frequency as the poller. I think it does. ;-) Meaning, yes, it graphs the 1000v just like it were any other switch. Thus, make sure you have all your "description" entries defined in the interfaces before you discover the device. And the vEth port does not change when the VM gets vmotioned from one host to another, so stats are consistent. I'm running the Cisco freemium version of the Nexus 1000v virtual switch on my ESXi 4.1 boxen, mainly because I needed LACP uplink capability, which was not available in the vSwitch. Then I discovered that you can get SNMP stats on a per-vEthernet port (meaning per host!) from the 1000v. Sweet! The poller takes a bit longer to run on the 1000v, just like it does on all other Nexus products, but well worth having the information. Progressive search and wrong answers

Hi, since the progressive search seems to start right away and for some reason our setup is too slow/too large to get instant SQL replies the answers seem to be dropping in as the SQL server finishes and them the client will render them as soon as it receives them. This unfortunately gives answers for shorter strings later even if the search field already does seem to be filled with a longer query string. Is there anyone who has implemented some JS/AJAX fix for this and ensure the answers processed by the client are only those matching the current search string (i.e. add a "static" version/revision/serial field into the SQL select and check for that in the results)? Vlan Interface Usage Alert

Hi All, We created a Alert Checker for interface usage greater than 80%. We are seeing interface usage alerts for Vlan SVI interfaces. These don't mean as much to us as physical interfaces do. Looks like the default bandwidth on a Vlan SVI interface is 1G on our platform. Is there any way we can configure Observium not alert on vlan interfaces? Our Device Match is "os equals ios" and our Entity Match is "*" for the interface usage alerts. I see ifType is an attribute option. Could I do something like "not ifType vlan"? Override Network Location

Dear all, I have noticed that when I override the network location with a site name Observium does not appear to apply the same location details that are defined in the config.php. This means that for a site such as HEX we have two locations in the drop down menu one as unknown->HEX for the overridden device and another with the proper location that is being pulled out of the config.php. Is this desired behaviour or a bug? BW rob

What you're looking for is a netflow analyser. There are plenty of free tools you can use and I believe one is crudely integrated with observium. You're better off with a separate product though. Netflow is notoriously IO intensive and having it built into observium would be like dividing by zero. Port down and observium doesnt show same vlan traffic

Hello, I am assign my cisco switch into observium. The cisco itself connect to internet thru port 48 on vlan 2. And observium server connect to cisco port 47 on vlan 3. There are several server connect to cisco vlan 2. Here is my issue, once I unplug my internet connection(port 48). Other server traffic on vlan 2 doesn't show up on observium. Hello, By default how many times does observium check for an alert threshold and how often? Say I have an alert to send email if a machine hits 95% cpu, does it get triggered automatically if a machine hits that threshold once ? Or does it check multiple times before getting triggered? gaps in graphs

Hello, i got sporadic dropouts over all my graphs. If this happen most of my graphs have dropouts. The poller runs not longer than a minute. `Total time for all devices: 41.07s 35.17s' Memory usage 200 of 1000 MB RAM. All devices are in the same physical gigabit network. Ping is less than 50 ms to each device. Monitored are only 16 devices. Observium itself runs as a openvz container (turnkeylinux). I searched the web but does not find anything that matches my setup. billing not working

Hi All, I’m having a problem trying to create bills for ports for one of our customers… we currently monitor the ADSL routers of our clients, and wanted to see if we can get a pretty bill/graph for the PPP ports of all the routers however adding ports to the bills just seem to make the bill disappear and not work? so far I add the bill successfully, and set a quota of say 1TB but when I go into the edit tab of the bill, the quota field is empty!? also i can’t seen to add more than 5 ports? any ideas Simon

Hi Mike after the upgrade to Observium 0.14.12.6089 the Cisco WLC 2504 is no longer recognized as WLC. It is a generic device, it even removed the basic temp sensor after a discovery... Spikes in 1 and 2 year graphs

Almost all of my 1 and 2 year graphs look like this. http://i.imgur.com/SnDlXz3.png I've tried several times to fix them with removespikes.pl and .php but never had any luck. Has anyone ever gotten the removespikes scripts to work in these cases? I run the command on a single device at a time and receive no output, but it doesn't fix the issue. I've also tried several of the other flags with no luck. Any pointers? Thanks! -GT

Device location not updated in database (already fixed?)

extending observium to handle custom MIBs

I have added a tree of MIBs (in the ‘experimental’ section of the tree) for my own application services to respond to snmp requests. This is for determining the health of a running service. I can view the objects using snmpwalk, and I can add the host running the agent to observium. I can see all the information retrieved from the ‘well-known’ MIBs (uptime, load, etc.) in observium for my extended agent, but I can’t see any of my own MIBs. Where do I look for how to let observium know about my MIBs so that it can show the data in a tabular or graphical format? I see the includes/polling/unix-agent/* as some examples, but it’s not clear to me where the mapping between my OIDs goes to the variables inside of running observium, so I can invoke rrdtool_create properly. It’s also not clear to me how I layout the various graphs on the page, once I have them created. If there is some documentation for that somewhere, or a particularly good example in the code to look at which would make it clear, that would be great. Thanks

Hello guys I'm currently looking for a monitoring tool and try a lot of them (freeware, opensource, etc...) Observium sounds good for me, definitely. I checked the live demo and can't access to the threshold/alert options, which are the most interesting part for me. I know if you give access as a admin to your demo, your Observium demo will be destroy within 1 minute. So before paying for a pro version, is there a possibility to test a live demo as a admin user or install a "time limited full version" on my VM ? Regards, Aurélien

Control-Plane class-maps

Hi, Is there are way to get the CBQoS stats for the control-plane on the 6500 (or indeed any Cisco with control-plane policies really)? I know they are presented via SNMP as we have the stats in Cacti, showing against “CPP” which is the same name as Observium has for the Control Plane interface (after I un-filtered it in config.php). For what it’s worth, here is the table from the Cacti query: [cid:image002.jpg@01D0121F.7F26CDC0] In this example, you can see 4 of the CoPP classes, alongside one of the interface classes. We use Cacti to get the control-plane classes only (hence grey) and all the interface classes are done by Observium because it handles the dynamic changes which occur MUCH better than Cacti does. Observium sees the same interface index (19) and name (CPP): [cid:image004.png@01D0121F.497847D0] But for some reason it doesn’t attach the CBQoS statistics for the control-plane…? All other QoS stats are present, so in general it is working OK, just the CPP ones which are missing (or I can’t find them). Any ideas? Cheers! Unix Agent

I have read the Unix Agent troubleshooting section. The Observium-wide FAQ didn't provide any guidance either. I set this up within the past week. Running Community Edition, Debian Wheezy. I got one box (CentOS) setup with the Unix Agent and at least one polling worked as it's now populated with different packages, MySQL information (that's one of the scripts it setup). It hasn't worked since the first polling or two. It isn't pulling in any new scripts on the monitored box and the information it does have appears to be stale. I can telnet from the Observium box to the monitored box via FQDN on port 36602 and get a bunch of stuff back. However, the observium.log and my router shows requests going to the FQDN at ports 1 and 6556 that are refused. I don't show anything in netstat listening on those ports on the monitored box. Hello, i tried to add a SNOM 320 VoIP Telephone. I saw that Observium has an include for snom devices. As a first test a bare snmp request from cli with v1 succeded, with v2 i got no response. But Observium does not discover the device with v1. DNS / host name service is working. I have read in the web that SNOM SNMP support is awful. They have their own mib, a request for "system" does not give an answer from cli. Does anybody have SNOM Devices monitored in Observium and if so, what could be the error that the device could not discovered and added? thx, ecaroh

Observium and Google downtime

We use the Google Map API, and it appeared that Google was unreachable here for several minutes. In that time, our Observium box ground to a halt due to all the PHP processes hanging on what I can only guess were map API calls. Missing graphs?

Hello, Today I discovered that some statistics are missing. There are empty graphs since one week in all App tabs - apache, mysql, postgres, etc. There are also no graphs in tab Temperature. Refreash of login page

Hi. There is an html instruction making the login page to be refreshed every 300 sec. If you try to login to Observium using wrong credentials (user may have forgot it) and then leave the web browser there will be an Failed login event every refresh cycle. This leads to unnecessary alerts in SIEM systems for those who are doing security monitoring. Are there a need to have the login page refreshed ? Regards Mikael

Unable to login

Hi everyone, We're testing Observium and I've come across an issue with logging in this morning. I have LDAP/Active Directory configured for auth and has been working perfectly up until now. At first I thought it was my account, but nope all good there. Then I thought it was the LDAP configuration so I changed the config back to the default mysql auth but still not able to log in. I tried rebooting the box but didn't work either also checked the file system and it's not full. I also tried deleting the cache and cookies and using different browsers but still no dice. Not sure if it's related but I updated to the new CE yesterday but it was working fine after the update yesterday afternoon. Any help will be much appreciated! Thanks.

Hello all, today morning I did an update from an older version of observium (sorry, don't know the exact version - but IIRC only 1 sql update file was executed afterwards) to the latest svn version. But if I try to open the Observium in the browser, the page shows nothing (only white background is shown). First I thought it's an issue with LDAP-Authentication. So I switched to mysql, created a new user with permission 10 and tried again. But still no luck. Interface Parsing

Dear all, Just wondering if there was an appetite out there for expanding the interface labelling feature of observium. The existing description parsing (http://www.observium.org/wiki/Interface_Description_Parsing) is pretty useful but also a bit limiting at times, as it seems more useful when labelling layer 3 services and less so for layer 2. Just a few general comments: * For us the pseudowires tab does not seem to auto populate (we use a variety of juniper, brocade and extreme switches and routers), just wondering if I have missed something here... * This aside there are more frequent occasions where we are providing VPLS services for a client and it would be nice if it were possible to label an interface as both a customer and a P2P link for example and then have these separately broken down in observium itself * There are also occasions where it would extremely useful to label backhaul circuits such as dark fibre and waves. Currently the only option for this is to label things as core but that page becomes so big it is not that useful unless you know what you are after (and then you would just go straight to the interface). Something like BACKHAUL: , PROVIDER:, END (A/B etc.) would be immensely useful and time saving. * The other issue we have that I don't have a simple answer for is the unhelpful aggregation of customer switch ports (quite often both ends of a P2P) and their layer 3 router ports. Could we start by having a separate aggregate graph for each circuit reference for each specific client. Maybe if END A and B are specified then the graph could demonstrate that these are actually different ends of the same link? What do people think? BW rob

Hello. Great product. Looking forward to evaluating the subscription version after I get a minimum base operational using the CE edition. I have an issue around viewing HDD TEMP graphs driven by data extracted from the UNIX agent and hddtemp script. I can confirm output when auditing output of: telnet (hostname) 36602 or ./poller.php -h (hostname) -d I can also confirm temp. sensor driven graphs do come up for other hosts when using SNMP lmsensors, however not for unix-agent / hddtemp data sources. Can someone point me in the right direction? Thank you.

My apologies…. Not using hddtemp script. Using the temperature script (that uses hddtemp).. sn = serial number. r6001 backward compatibility

Dear all, Revision 6001 cleans up a bunch of old code paths that should not have been used in recent days. If you are upgrading from a revision before r5000, it's probably best to upgrade to r6000 (svn up -r6000) first, run a full discovery and poll cycle, then upgrade to latest trunk. We've removed RRD renaming code for files which should since long have been renamed, and variables that should not exist anymore in your config. Variables to double check: $config['email_*'] should be renamed to $config['email'][*] instead. Tom

Groups

What is the intention of the groups feature? It seems like a really powerful way to group stuff together and have interesting views of things. But right now it just generates a list of entities that you can click through or hover over. I took a look at the code that generates all the various graph layouts (iftypes, health, ports). It seems that every page has its own code for handling the graph layout. It seem like this would be a great place to leverage a bunch of the existing code so you can create group specific views of sensors, ports etc... But it doesn't look like the code is structured that way (i.e reusable components/widgets). The standard views are good, but I want to be able to see them on a per datacenter/region basis rather than globally. The global view is visually interesting/pretty it is less useful.

Where are you disabling / ignoring the ports? Screenshot(s) would be helpful here. You can set each port to poll or alert (Yes/No) under the settings of the device the port is on. I¹m not sure if the Alert toggle is tied to the new alerts or a remnant of the old alerting system. Alerts can¹t be added up. They¹re attributed to whatever entity/device/metric combination you create, triggering on the individual values that match your rules. You could create rules to match both of your individual PDUs, or all PDUs, but you can¹t ask it to add/subtract the values of multiple rules or metrics to trigger an alert. Curious - what kind of scenario are you looking at that would warrant this kind of alarm? Problems

Hello, I have a couple of problems with observium which really hinder me trusting it's alerting feature etc. 1 - Some servers show as down, when in fact they aren't down and snmp is started (i've also tried to restart) 2 - Some server show as up and while I have an alert for storage to send warning only when its below 5% full it will send an alert saying C drive space is at 0% but in fact the servers have more than 10% left. Can these issue's be related to iop's or the polling time? I'd like to figure this out because the SNMP servers are windows servers and everytime one of them is down, I can't afford to troubleshoot by removing snmp and reinstalling it because windows requires a reboot, which I just can't do on domain controllers, file servers etc. Is it possible to put the login portal to observium on a seperate webpage completely so that customers can log into it from our site for example/

Assistance with Port Alert Checker

Hi all, I'm looking for a little help figuring our why my port alert checker didn't seem to work.I set up port alert checker to trigger when greater than 80%. The actual usage was at 100% for a couple hours. This is a gigabit interface set to 100m with a bandwidth statement. The screen shot reflects the 100m speed correctly. I've attached a couple screen shots with my port and alert check. Any ideas why it didn't fire off? Thanks, Chip

Exim module problem

Hi al All, I've added at Unix agent the exim module (I've already apache). But Observium can't locate this module. If I type from local server 'telnet myip 36602' there are the exim information. What could be the problem? Thank You in advance for your help
