What is the intention of the groups feature? It seems like a really powerful way to group stuff together and have interesting views of things. But right now it just generates a list of entities that you can click through or hover over. I took a look at the code that generates all the various graph layouts (iftypes, health, ports). It seems that every page has its own code for handling the graph layout. It seem like this would be a great place to leverage a bunch of the existing code so you can create group specific views of sensors, ports etc... But it doesn't look like the code is structured that way (i.e reusable components/widgets). The standard views are good, but I want to be able to see them on a per datacenter/region basis rather than globally. The global view is visually interesting/pretty it is less useful.

Where are you disabling / ignoring the ports? Screenshot(s) would be helpful here. You can set each port to poll or alert (Yes/No) under the settings of the device the port is on. I¹m not sure if the Alert toggle is tied to the new alerts or a remnant of the old alerting system. RAID Alert Check

Alerts can¹t be added up. They¹re attributed to whatever entity/device/metric combination you create, triggering on the individual values that match your rules. You could create rules to match both of your individual PDUs, or all PDUs, but you can¹t ask it to add/subtract the values of multiple rules or metrics to trigger an alert. Curious - what kind of scenario are you looking at that would warrant this kind of alarm? Is there a way to add PDU Amerage together so you get an alert based on the Amperage Usage of 2 PDUs together? Problems

Hello, I have a couple of problems with observium which really hinder me trusting it's alerting feature etc. 1 - Some servers show as down, when in fact they aren't down and snmp is started (i've also tried to restart) 2 - Some server show as up and while I have an alert for storage to send warning only when its below 5% full it will send an alert saying C drive space is at 0% but in fact the servers have more than 10% left. Can these issue's be related to iop's or the polling time? I'd like to figure this out because the SNMP servers are windows servers and everytime one of them is down, I can't afford to troubleshoot by removing snmp and reinstalling it because windows requires a reboot, which I just can't do on domain controllers, file servers etc. Is it possible to put the login portal to observium on a seperate webpage completely so that customers can log into it from our site for example/

Assistance with Port Alert Checker

Hi all, I'm looking for a little help figuring our why my port alert checker didn't seem to work.I set up port alert checker to trigger when greater than 80%. The actual usage was at 100% for a couple hours. This is a gigabit interface set to 100m with a bandwidth statement. The screen shot reflects the 100m speed correctly. I've attached a couple screen shots with my port and alert check. Any ideas why it didn't fire off? Thanks, Chip

Exim module problem

Performance

Hi, A solution for a large network like yours could be using a distributed architecture. Here is a feedback from our usage : Current architecture in our organisation graphs 2000 devices and 70k ports and target is 6000 devices. We have built a farm of Observium pollers ( 6 physical servers ) and 1 more for mysql server (+Apache for GUI). Our 6 poller servers are 70% CPU idle and disks are ok for now. We progressively are adding new devices. We did a small patch in mysql scheme, to add a "poller_id" into devices table. At each new device added, script "add_device.php" choose the poller the least used (based on numbers of devices per poller server). Each poller asks to SQL Server devices with its poller_id. The GUI server can read via NFS all rrd files stored in pollers. Hardware used for each poller is HP DL360 Gen7 / 4 GB RAM / 6 disks SAS 10k Raid 1+0 / 2*E5620 2.40Ghz (4 cores each). E-mail Notifications & Backend Settings

Hello, does anyone know which parameters need to be added within config.php to enable e-mail notifications. Also, where do I configure the backend settings? Is that in config.php as well? Junos 4-byte ASN support

Hello, I tried digging through the mailing archives but jet lag from my recent trip is stymieing my efforts in finding relevant threads. I'm running 0.14.11.5945 and notice that 4-byte ASN is still not supported. We use 4-byte ASN for the greater range as we eventually plan to run eBGP down to our servers. On Junos devices -- anything from MX, QFX to SRX -- I notice that ASNs show as a negative integer (example "-94967243"). On our Cisco's, they show up as our favorite 23456. The main question is: Are the negative integers a limitation of the Junos MIB? On those individual devices I do not have a "tab=routing/proto=bgp/", the BGP sessions do not show up at all under the general "routing -> BGP All Sessions" tab, and consequently we're missing a large chunk of our network and we don't have any BGP alerts (though I have all the above with Cisco Nexus gear). Are there any workarounds or plans to support 4-byte ASN in Observium, specifically with Junos equipment? Thank you! bt

I'm having some major issues with Auto-discovery (read, I can't seem to get it working at all). Hi there, We monitor APC pdu's here and have set up the following metrics: 41 PDU SENSOR ALARM notification of a warning/alert/down event on sensor sensor_event eq warning sensor_event eq alert sensor_event eq down type match power * This then picks up on all the sensors on that device: power banks 1 and 2 , power supply and voltage. Then if you go into the the node, click settings and then "sensor" you can manually set the min/ max for each one . once this hits it will alarm! You need disable 'fdb-table' poller module (in device edit -> module tab) On your device too many active vlans, on cisco devices FDB entries stored in separate contexts for each vlan. That why for cisco devices walked BRIDGE-MIB::dot1dTpFdbEntry as many times as have active vlans on device. Performance

'Aloha! I'm in the process of evaluating observium for my organisation's needs. We have some instances running already, but my task is to do the evaluation in a more structured way. I have some questions which I will keep in different posts to keep the threads clean. Performance: We are looking at a network currently consisting of 4000 devices with close to 100'000 ports. These devices are well known to observium and a subset of them got auto discovered just fine. But how about performance. Will it require vast amounts of computing power? Also, our network grows quite rapidly, might be 50% bigger 12 months ahead. I found an old thread from July 2013 where Joe Hoh describing a complex multi server setup to scale observium to something approx 2-3 times my current needs. Will I have to go through similar "struggles" to get it working? Or has observium changed much to make it scale different than it did 1.5 year ago? Pointers to information regarding scaling observium are most welcome. -- /Morten %-)

Hi, I am using svn 5973. I am trying to setup an Alert Checker. No matter what I do, I get an error that the alert name must be unique. I have tried strange names in the "Alert Name" field, but everything seems to be taken :-( Leaving the entity field blank, gives me another error. I am trying to setup, to start with, alerting if a port on the upstream router runs at 80%. Hello, I wonder if anyone has the local HDDTEMP script working on an Archlinux PC that could help me. It works fine on my server (ubuntu), but I just get intermittent output of 1 disk (sda) and no temp reading at all from the Arch linux PC. I want to use the graphs to proactively monitor the storage on the servers. Is there another solution? I promised you more questions for use in my evaluation process, here comes the next one: Odd devices: besides the 4000 routers and switches in my previous post, our business does a great deal of video transmissions. This is handled with crazy video codec boxes which sometimes have very limited SNMP capabilities. I face two problems: - it cant be autodiscovered; the MIB simply doesn't that. I have a database describing exactly what we have and how it's configured. - it's covered by NDAs, so I cant event tell you much about it. I would like to graph various parameters in these devices using observium, but I guess I will have to implement these myself. (or hire somebody to sign the NDA and hack something together for me). Also, sometimes the concept needing graphing isn't really bound to a single device, but more a collation of multiple states from multiple devices. I understand that observium isn't really meant to be extensible by the end customer (me) by simply tweaking configuration. I read "It's not as simple as "adding the MIB", actual code needs to be written to support the device and its features. You could learn PHP and familiarise yourself with the Observium codebase and write support for it yourself." as a warning, as i'm nowhere a competent PHP hacker. Think the questions are: - is observium at all the right tool for the job? (a goal is to limit the number of tools the NOC has to learn) - can observium live in an non-auto-discovery world? - can observium handle abstract measurements not bound to a specific device? -- /Morten %-)

No storage graphs and storage module keeps switching to disabled

Hello, Several (virtual) servers (Windows 2008 R2) do not show the storage graphs in Observium. On these servers the poller module keeps switching to disabled. The amount of storage used do show up on these servers. Other servers, same configuration, do show the storage graphs. On these servers the storage poller module do stay enabled. I've checked and restarted the SNMP service locally on these servers. I've updated CorreLog (syslog agent) on the servers to the latest version. Observium is installed on a Ubuntu server. I've updated Observium to 0.14.11.5963. How can I fix this problem? Hi, I have tried some times ago to change the MySQL server into MariaDB on my Observium server (community), but it seems that is breaking some parts of Observium and doesn't seems to update things. Anybody here have a good experience about moving MySQL to MariaDB with observium ? Hi All not sure if this is a bug ive found or simple me being dumb! ive just enabled a 2008r2 server with WMI to monitor it abit more… and ive noticed in the Timing panel of the device its listed the module mssql ? the mssql wasn’t listed before i enabled the WMI module for the device? shouldn’t it read WMI ? ive attached a screenshot showing what i mean Regards Simon

Hello, which file should I edit to configure and enable e-mail notifications for when a device is down? I need assistance configuring the mail backend settings and the alert itself. I was working on config.php, but haven't had success with messages being sent while a device is offline. Syslogging & Expansion

Hi Everyone, We are considering the possibility of using Observium's syslog capability to handle the syslog output of 50 machines which will be spitting out roughly 300K lines of log per hour for a grand total in the ball park 360,000,000 log entries per 24 hours. Has anyone used/attempted to handle this volume of logging with Observium in the past? If so, would you mind sharing your experience? I am also looking for feedback on hardware suggestions for both the Observium machine as well for the standalone database server. Any feedback is appreciated! Thanks, -Lane

Newbie... Cambium PTP wireless sorta contribution

Greetings, New to the product, new to the list, trying it out to see if this will work for us. and I like what I see so far. I note with glee the upcoming support of the Cambium Canopy products with the patch filed under OBSERVIUM-1055, but also see that it's only for the PMP product line. Now it's important to note I'm a network engineer, not a coder, so I'm not sure how to go about some of the more (heck, even the lesser!) intricate details of PHP programming. I've been able to make it as far as the following for the os.inc.php include, but submission of same for the project. I have no idea how to go about doing, and again I'll point back to not being someone who knows how to write code. Just for testing sake, I put the following stuff into my own installation and tested, the discovery php is properly discovering/classifying the devices, and the poller phps being called are fetching the proper information from the devices. smokeping ping tab now showing up on device

H Guys, I'm having a problem with getting smokeping working with some of my devices. I have smokeping setup and it's working correctly ( I'm able to go to the smokeping cgi and see the graphs, etc). However the ping tab for smokeping isn't showing up for the device in observium. The device name is the same in both observium and smokeping. However, it's working fine for one of my switches but not the rest. I don't beleive it's a permission as I'm able to get it working with one of our switches. SNMP Location string parsing

Hi all, We use the geocoding functionality in Observium to place the devices on the front page map. All is working reasonably well. Today we set the SNMP sysLocation field locally in each device to street address ("Street, City, Country") We would like to be able to add "non-Geolocation" information to the sysLocation string without messing up the geolocation functionality. For example, we would like to add "Room 34, Rack 2" to the sysLocation. Is there functionality in Obervium to do this today? E.g. putting the extra information in "()" or other special characters? Nexus 5596 polling slowness

Hello, Just curious if anyone else is seeing long polling times for Nexus 5596UP switches. Everything else in our deployment is responding in a timely manner and there are no bottlenecks on the Observium server at this point. ./poller.php: access2-2a.sj2 - 1 devices polled in 243.6 secs Polling times in the high 200 second range are not uncommon while most all of our other high port density devices are well under 30 seconds. If anyone has found a NXOS software version that works better than others please let me know. We have tried on various software version 5,6 and 7 releases. I can only imagine this is a Cisco issue but thought I'd ask here in case anyone solved it. Regards, Dan Bliss

Cisco ASA failover

I noticed that a pair of firewalls I had failed over about a month ago but the only thing showing in the logs of the device was that the mac addresses all changed. Is there a way to get better alerting on failover? I know the stateful failover are almost sub second but logs are generated. Not sure if you can monitor that with SNMP but figured I would throw that out there. Carlos

Basic Cisco Meraki hardware support

Hi Adam/All I may have missed how to make a more formal submission for hardware support, so if there is one let me know. However, I suspect the mailing list is probably a good arena for any criticism/pointers on what to do better/what not to do when attempting to add new device support. -- I’ve recently been involved in the installation of equipment and support for a mobile medical facility. We’ve used Meraki switches and access points for a number of reasons, not least of which is the instant monitoring/alerts capability, web based management, web based troubleshooting capabilities and easy provisioning of equipment when it needs to be replaced. As much as the Meraki web management portal is useful, it’s not necessarily always available in this facility and we needed a local management system/interface to monitor the equipment, alert local users to any failures/problems, and provide a quick and easy “view” for all of the ICT equipment within the mobile facility. So, I used Observium, but needed to add support for the Meraki components. Meraki provide an SNMP interface to their cloud management platform. It’s basically useless if talking directly to equipment as there’s currently no extra information you can extract from the devices themselves. I don't really want to add this to Observium myself but have included the OID for detection and possible to for additional inventory collection at a later date. Print Interface Details - show other devices in the same subnet - need to exclude the private IP addresses ?

Hi All, I have a small suggestion regarding the info displayed together with each interface under 'Port' => 'Detail' . There we noticed the observium displays all other devices on the same subnet from other devices at the last column of each interface irrespective of whether they are real IPs ( internet routable ) or Private IP addresses ( defined in RFC 1918 ). Although this feature is really good, we feel that if there is an option to exclude certain IP subnets from this selection, specially the private IP addresses it would make sense because we found there are lot of unrelated interfaces are getting listed ( about 50 items ) under this merely because of the fact that they are having the same IP addresses/subnets but which are completely different and isolated device interfaces in other VPNs which is common in IP VPN setups. We found the location where this logic is programmed, and we can easily changed the SQL query to accommodate this as follows ( *`ipv4_address` NOT LIKE '192.168.% etc. ) *shown below But it would be elegant if these excluding subnets could be defined as a config parameter and filter them here. monitor /dev/sg1 temperatre sensor

Hi All, i don’t know if this is possible or not or even if i need to create a custom script to do this for me? but i want to monitor the temperature of HDD's thats plugged into a RAID controller? currently the hddtemp doesn’t detect the HDD :( but i did get some progress with using the /dev/sg1 device instead of /dev/sda root@proxmox2:/etc# hddtemp /dev/sg1 /dev/sg1: ST3500413AS: drive supported, but it doesn't have a temperature sensor. and from what i can tell i can pull out information using the smartctl command root@proxmox2:/etc# smartctl -d sat -a /dev/sg1 | grep -i temperature 190 Airflow_Temperature_Cel 0x0022 067 053 045 Old_age Always - 33 (Min/Max 22/43) 194 Temperature_Celsius 0x0022 033 047 000 Old_age Always - 33 (0 15 0 0) is the something I’m missing with the hddtemp? or does it require a custom script? regards Simon

Bulk add bills

I just bulk added about 500 client devices (CPE's) to Observium. Trying to figure out a bulk way to add them to traffic accounting / billing. I want to make a bill for each device (customer), based on the device name is fine and then associate a port to the bill. All of the devices are exactly the same and the name of the port is the same on each. Below would be amazing if this existed. Or does it? I would be able to concatenate in Excel right into this. Like I did to bulk add the devices. ./create_bill.php <description> <billing_type> <billing_type> <billing_amount> <billing_day> (customer_reference) (billing_reference) (notes) ./add_bill_port.php <description> <device_hostname> <port_name> (Repeat as necessary) Adding <filename> to the above php scripts, the same way add_device.php has, would be great. Hi there. Resending out message as I am hoping someone can assist me with this. How on earth do you make a packet loss alarm? IE if a CPE hits over 30% then it will alarm? I cant find an attribute from the guide to do this. I have set an alert as device_ping gt 250 type_match * * This works when a cpe hits over 250mms thus showing latency. But how do I do a packet loss? I have tried packet_loss gt 30 but as this is not in the list it dosnt work! Any help would be most appreciated. Graph Previous

When looking at the 6 hour graph, if I graph previous, shouldn’t it show what happened during that time frame 24 hours ago? It looks like it’s just showing what happened the 6 hours before the 6 hours I’m looking at. Which is I guess technically true for what “Graph Previous” means. Is there a way to graph previous time frame yesterday? My use case is zooming in on a time frame and then looking at usage and then trying to see what happened yesterday to see if there was a significant difference. If I zoom in and see the 20 minutes before hand, well it’s just not useful. It works fine for 24 hr, and week and month. 48 hr could be a little weird as well. The last 6 hours with graph previous - I don’t know how useful it is to see the previous 6 hours here. The actual previous time period yesterday - not to same scale This is what is actually being graphed in graph previous.

Distro Script not working

I have added the distro script as per http://www.observium.org/wiki/Linux_Distribution_Detection Running the distro script produces the right output, but observium does not seem to be detecting the distro correctly (still showing as Linux ***-generic) Snmpd has been restarted, and the OS being detected is Ubuntu 14.04. Any idea what could be going wrong? Thanks!

I quasi-hacked my community edition release to provide basic support for canopy, but it didn't give any RF details, just basic network utilization. I see where there is a patch to provide better support in the subscription version, which I am hoping will show up in the next community release. If the data looks good for canopy on that, we'll be converting to the subscription version very shortly thereafter... ADSL Sync Speed change alert

Hi I am trying to set the Alert checker to notify me on any sync speed changes on the adsl port. Currently I can see all the changes on the Event log as below: 1d 19h 58m adsl Interface changed: [ifSpeed] 5152000 -> 5184000 4d 12h 48m adsl Interface changed: [ifSpeed] 5120000 -> 5152000 6d 4h 23m adsl Interface changed: [ifSpeed] 5344000 -> 5120000 How to set the check conditions to alert on any change in Sync speed such as "ifSpeed ne old_speed" Checker Type:Port Check Conditions: ifSpeed ?? I have a question though for you. How on earth do you make a packet loss alarm? IE if a CPE hits over 30% then it will alarm? I cant find an attribute from the guide to do this. I have set an alert as device_ping gt 250 type_match * * This works when a cpe hits over 250mms thus showing latency. But how do I do a packet loss? F5 device O/S identification failures

Hi All I've got a support case open with F5 regarding an issue whereby their net-snmp implementation stops reporting F5 specific sysObjectID values. This may be a recent 11.5+ version issue, as I've not run across it before, and it only seems to occur after making SNMP related configuration changes. e.g. on virtual editions, SNMPv2-MIB::sysObjectID.0 = OID: F5-BIGIP-SYSTEM-MIB::bigipVirtualEdition Starts to become at some point, SNMPv2-MIB::sysObjectID.0 = OID: NET-SNMP-TC::linux Observium goes back to treating the system as a Linux box. The F5 specific OID's are still pollable, so the best fix seems to be a quick poll against F5-BIGIP-SYSTEM-MIB::sysGeneralChassisSerialNum.0 to determine if it's an F5 system. Observium not updating

Unix agent bind issue

Ports not found on older PowerConnect switches

Hello. I'm having trouble getting Observium (CE 0.14.4.5229) to recognize ports on my Dell PowerConnect 3048 and 3024 switches. It appears these switches only support SNMP v1. Observium connects and grabs SNMP contact, location, etc. but doesn't see ports. I login to Observium as admin, I edit the user "guest" properties : Device Access None Configured Grant access to new device Interface Access None Configured Grant access to new interface I see different configuration : config.php vs web configuration. A strange issue indeed… Based on Mike’s input I ran on the old-style poller for a day, then all is fine. I’m now running on poller-wrapper for another day, with concurrency set to 2, and that seems to be fine as well. I had it at 8, then all goes to h*ll. Alerts in "Other" state

Hi, I have quite a few alerts stuck in the "Other" state, any idea on what causes this? I had this problem a while ago and then it seemed to disappear after creating a few more alerts and several svn updates so i'm not really sure what cleared it but after adding more devices it's back again. I've tried regenerating the alerts a few times but that makes no difference, is there some debug that can be turned on to work out what is going on here? It's across multiple alert checkers and even something as simple as "device status eq 0" for a device down check has multiple alerts stuck in "other" state. Server drive space

Hello, I want to monitor windows servers for C drive space. While I had a policy that was using the storage_perc gt 90 and it was working fine, I want to monitor instead just for servers with 5 GB of space or less, on any drive for now, then narrow it to certain drives. I put storage_free lt 5 (thinking this would look for 5GB or less, maybe its 5% or less not sure) but it's throwing some alerts that are not true. I get some servers with the art and when I check it shows as if the C drive had 0 B left, but in reality they have 11 GB and more free. Any idea how I can accomplish what I want? Thanks, Darian

Running Ubuntu 14.04 and getting this error message: The extension 'mcrypt' is missing. This extension required for use by the "remember me" feature. Please install the php5-mcrypt package on Ubuntu/Debian or the php-mcrypt package on RHEL/Centos. Alternatively, you can disable this feature by setting $config['login_remember_me'] = FALSE; in your config. We've uninstalled and reinstalled it twice now and still getting this error. I found an option to do ignore until ok on the interface settings. But it is really unrealistic to do this manually for hundreds of ports. Any easier way to achieve this? I do want to monitor ports status, but I don¹t want to get a flood of alerts every 24 hours. Thanks a lot. 95th percentile and billing module - possible discrepancies

Hi I thought I would post here first, just in case what I am seeing isn't a bug, and just me just mis-understanding the calculations. Just a quick setup - we currently are billed on a 95th percentile from an ISP, which we have two physical ethernet connections plugged into two different HP ProCurve switches. I have created a Bill under Traffic Accounting, and set the billing type as 95th @ 50 Mbps, and added both the ports for our connections so I am able to see both under "Bill Ports". This has been running for about 6 - 7 months now, calculating away. While going back through our reports, I noticed that in September we had an overage marked in Observium as 11.4Mbps (Actual usage 61.4Mbps). However the bill we got from the ISP gave us an overage of 30.38Mbps (Actual usage 80.38Mbps). So I went to look deeper and got the break downs I needed. Our ISP gave us the following for the highest 95th: Link1: 50.375Mbps Link2: 30.005Mbps Total: 80.38Mbps I then looked on Observium for the graphs for the two ports, and they reported the following for the highest 95th: Link1: 49.64Mbps Link2: 30.44Mbps Total: 80.08Mbps I can accept that two different systems there may be a very small discrepancy with the larger numbers - which is fine, however -- the problem arrives when the billing calculations comes in, and shows the values as above (11.4Mbps over, 61.4Mbps usage). I have uploaded the two port graphs and a screen grab from the billing page to show in more detail the above numbers here: http://imgur.com/a/iErfo I just want to check I have not missed something that is staring me in the face in regards to the calculations, and if I am, please let me know! This issue just popped up. I verified that the username/pw for my paid subscription is valid. I can reach the svn.observium.org url from the server (tested with curl). Hi, We have some switches with thousands of ports. I know, we don’t have administrative down for unused ports. So I set up port down alerts for all ports, so that the initial alert of the down ports, I just ignore so I know those are ports already down. So the theory is that for any following alerts, I will look into them. But I found out observium will send out the massive port down alerts exactly in 24 hours frequency. How do I disable the persistent alerting? I want observium only alert me once for an event period. Thanks a lot. —Zhenhui

Overriding location codes

We've got custom locations defined in config.php so all of our devices use a 3 or 4 digit location code for snmp, Observium reads the location code, checks config.php and sets the full address. We have some devices that do not have location in snmp so we set it manually by overriding it in the device settings. However, overriding sysLocation and providing a custom location does not compare that location to what is setup in the config.php. So can a custom location setting check config.php for the value? polling issues with 5897

Hi, Updated to the latest svn version yesterday, after which I immediately had issues with the poller. Updated from a release about two weeks older. Now I get up/down for different devices, sometimes complete BGP neighbours down on others. Device down alerts on snmp, etc. I increased the number of poller processes in the crontab and increased snap timeout values etc. However, I still have graphs with large parts missing because of this. Checked poller times, kept an eye on the processes running and logs. Some devices take 120s to poll completely, but all polling is done in about 2 minutes. Still I get these errors, other than the upgrade no changes have been made to firewalls, policies, etc. Any clues? Do I need to upgrade php? Regards, Rutger
