Hi there. Resending out message as I am hoping someone can assist me with this. How on earth do you make a packet loss alarm? IE if a CPE hits over 30% then it will alarm? I cant find an attribute from the guide to do this. I have set an alert as device_ping gt 250 type_match * * This works when a cpe hits over 250mms thus showing latency. But how do I do a packet loss? I have tried packet_loss gt 30 but as this is not in the list it dosnt work! Any help would be most appreciated. Graph Previous

When looking at the 6 hour graph, if I graph previous, shouldn’t it show what happened during that time frame 24 hours ago? It looks like it’s just showing what happened the 6 hours before the 6 hours I’m looking at. Which is I guess technically true for what “Graph Previous” means. Is there a way to graph previous time frame yesterday? My use case is zooming in on a time frame and then looking at usage and then trying to see what happened yesterday to see if there was a significant difference. If I zoom in and see the 20 minutes before hand, well it’s just not useful. It works fine for 24 hr, and week and month. 48 hr could be a little weird as well. The last 6 hours with graph previous - I don’t know how useful it is to see the previous 6 hours here. The actual previous time period yesterday - not to same scale This is what is actually being graphed in graph previous.

Distro Script not working

I have added the distro script as per http://www.observium.org/wiki/Linux_Distribution_Detection Running the distro script produces the right output, but observium does not seem to be detecting the distro correctly (still showing as Linux ***-generic) Snmpd has been restarted, and the OS being detected is Ubuntu 14.04. Any idea what could be going wrong? Thanks!

I quasi-hacked my community edition release to provide basic support for canopy, but it didn't give any RF details, just basic network utilization. I see where there is a patch to provide better support in the subscription version, which I am hoping will show up in the next community release. If the data looks good for canopy on that, we'll be converting to the subscription version very shortly thereafter... Hi I am trying to set the Alert checker to notify me on any sync speed changes on the adsl port. Currently I can see all the changes on the Event log as below: 1d 19h 58m adsl Interface changed: [ifSpeed] 5152000 -> 5184000 4d 12h 48m adsl Interface changed: [ifSpeed] 5120000 -> 5152000 6d 4h 23m adsl Interface changed: [ifSpeed] 5344000 -> 5120000 How to set the check conditions to alert on any change in Sync speed such as "ifSpeed ne old_speed" Checker Type:Port Check Conditions: ifSpeed ?? F5 device O/S identification failures

Hi All I've got a support case open with F5 regarding an issue whereby their net-snmp implementation stops reporting F5 specific sysObjectID values. This may be a recent 11.5+ version issue, as I've not run across it before, and it only seems to occur after making SNMP related configuration changes. e.g. on virtual editions, SNMPv2-MIB::sysObjectID.0 = OID: F5-BIGIP-SYSTEM-MIB::bigipVirtualEdition Starts to become at some point, SNMPv2-MIB::sysObjectID.0 = OID: NET-SNMP-TC::linux Observium goes back to treating the system as a Linux box. The F5 specific OID's are still pollable, so the best fix seems to be a quick poll against F5-BIGIP-SYSTEM-MIB::sysGeneralChassisSerialNum.0 to determine if it's an F5 system. Observium not updating

Unix agent bind issue

However, not a lot of documentation exists yet on how to get rrdcached to work with observium. I did some trial and error and found a working method and wrote a quick and dirty guide. Ports not found on older PowerConnect switches

Hello. I'm having trouble getting Observium (CE 0.14.4.5229) to recognize ports on my Dell PowerConnect 3048 and 3024 switches. It appears these switches only support SNMP v1. Observium connects and grabs SNMP contact, location, etc. but doesn't see ports. I login to Observium as admin, I edit the user "guest" properties : Device Access None Configured Grant access to new device Interface Access None Configured Grant access to new interface I see different configuration : config.php vs web configuration. A strange issue indeed… Based on Mike’s input I ran on the old-style poller for a day, then all is fine. I’m now running on poller-wrapper for another day, with concurrency set to 2, and that seems to be fine as well. I had it at 8, then all goes to h*ll. Alerts in "Other" state

Hi, I have quite a few alerts stuck in the "Other" state, any idea on what causes this? I had this problem a while ago and then it seemed to disappear after creating a few more alerts and several svn updates so i'm not really sure what cleared it but after adding more devices it's back again. I've tried regenerating the alerts a few times but that makes no difference, is there some debug that can be turned on to work out what is going on here? It's across multiple alert checkers and even something as simple as "device status eq 0" for a device down check has multiple alerts stuck in "other" state. Server drive space

Hello, I want to monitor windows servers for C drive space. While I had a policy that was using the storage_perc gt 90 and it was working fine, I want to monitor instead just for servers with 5 GB of space or less, on any drive for now, then narrow it to certain drives. I put storage_free lt 5 (thinking this would look for 5GB or less, maybe its 5% or less not sure) but it's throwing some alerts that are not true. I get some servers with the art and when I check it shows as if the C drive had 0 B left, but in reality they have 11 GB and more free. Any idea how I can accomplish what I want? Thanks, Darian

Running Ubuntu 14.04 and getting this error message: The extension 'mcrypt' is missing. This extension required for use by the "remember me" feature. Please install the php5-mcrypt package on Ubuntu/Debian or the php-mcrypt package on RHEL/Centos. Alternatively, you can disable this feature by setting $config['login_remember_me'] = FALSE; in your config. We've uninstalled and reinstalled it twice now and still getting this error. I found an option to do ignore until ok on the interface settings. But it is really unrealistic to do this manually for hundreds of ports. Any easier way to achieve this? I do want to monitor ports status, but I don¹t want to get a flood of alerts every 24 hours. Thanks a lot. 95th percentile and billing module - possible discrepancies

Hi I thought I would post here first, just in case what I am seeing isn't a bug, and just me just mis-understanding the calculations. Just a quick setup - we currently are billed on a 95th percentile from an ISP, which we have two physical ethernet connections plugged into two different HP ProCurve switches. I have created a Bill under Traffic Accounting, and set the billing type as 95th @ 50 Mbps, and added both the ports for our connections so I am able to see both under "Bill Ports". This has been running for about 6 - 7 months now, calculating away. While going back through our reports, I noticed that in September we had an overage marked in Observium as 11.4Mbps (Actual usage 61.4Mbps). However the bill we got from the ISP gave us an overage of 30.38Mbps (Actual usage 80.38Mbps). So I went to look deeper and got the break downs I needed. Our ISP gave us the following for the highest 95th: Link1: 50.375Mbps Link2: 30.005Mbps Total: 80.38Mbps I then looked on Observium for the graphs for the two ports, and they reported the following for the highest 95th: Link1: 49.64Mbps Link2: 30.44Mbps Total: 80.08Mbps I can accept that two different systems there may be a very small discrepancy with the larger numbers - which is fine, however -- the problem arrives when the billing calculations comes in, and shows the values as above (11.4Mbps over, 61.4Mbps usage). I have uploaded the two port graphs and a screen grab from the billing page to show in more detail the above numbers here: http://imgur.com/a/iErfo I just want to check I have not missed something that is staring me in the face in regards to the calculations, and if I am, please let me know! This issue just popped up. I verified that the username/pw for my paid subscription is valid. I can reach the svn.observium.org url from the server (tested with curl). So I set up port down alerts for all ports, so that the initial alert of the down ports, I just ignore so I know those are ports already down. So the theory is that for any following alerts, I will look into them. But I found out observium will send out the massive port down alerts exactly in 24 hours frequency. How do I disable the persistent alerting? I want observium only alert me once for an event period. Thanks a lot. —Zhenhui

Overriding location codes

We've got custom locations defined in config.php so all of our devices use a 3 or 4 digit location code for snmp, Observium reads the location code, checks config.php and sets the full address. We have some devices that do not have location in snmp so we set it manually by overriding it in the device settings. However, overriding sysLocation and providing a custom location does not compare that location to what is setup in the config.php. So can a custom location setting check config.php for the value? polling issues with 5897

Hi, Updated to the latest svn version yesterday, after which I immediately had issues with the poller. Updated from a release about two weeks older. Now I get up/down for different devices, sometimes complete BGP neighbours down on others. Device down alerts on snmp, etc. I increased the number of poller processes in the crontab and increased snap timeout values etc. However, I still have graphs with large parts missing because of this. Checked poller times, kept an eye on the processes running and logs. Some devices take 120s to poll completely, but all polling is done in about 2 minutes. Still I get these errors, other than the upgrade no changes have been made to firewalls, policies, etc. Any clues? Do I need to upgrade php? Regards, Rutger

Hi I just installed Observium on Debian 7.6 : Observium CE 0.14.4.5229 Apache nginx/1.2.1 PHP 5.4.4-14+deb7u14 MySQL 5.5.40-MariaDB-1~wheezy-log SNMP NET-SNMP version: 5.4.3 RRDtool 1.4.7 I have added 80 routers ( Cisco / Juniper / HP ) and most of them display fine. Couple of Q's - Exchange - it's not pickup up any data, but maybe this is because we're using 2003 - is this "supported". I use the quotes as the wmi stuff is listed as very much in development so possibly not working.. MSSQL - again no data, all zeros like with exchange. I tried the polling.php wmi specific command, but I can't see any wmi stuff particularly - just the standard snmp. Thanks in advance andy

Hi Adam, Thanks. Tricky this – I’m trying to sell observium to management, who are playing hardball and trying things like netsight from extreme (any negatives for this!?). Anyway, monitoring exchange and MSSQL are big positives towards my argument. WMIC is used for the connection and querying, so perhaps I’d best look at the php behind it if time permits. Integrated smokeping graph appearance

The integrated smokeping graphs don't have the same appearance as they do in smokeping itself. Is there a way to make the graphs have the same appearance? Also, the data represented in Observium doesn't appear to match smokeping when looking at the variance. I've attached examples. I realize that it's the same rrd being drawn but it's just the representation of the data that is different. Smokeping 2.6.8 and Observium 0.14.10.5883 Justin

Invalid device/port combination

After an upgrade a while back I began to receive a message "Invalid device/port combination" when selecting the hyperlink for a port on any device. I upgraded recently to 5770 and still experiencing this issue. The URL http://observium.domain.com/device/device=70/tab=port/port=10234/ gives the following message. High discovery time on Mikrotik ARP/NDP table

ActiveDirectory (LDAP) authentication very slow

Hi, I'm running observium from the latest TurnKeyLinux distribution and I'm having some trouble getting the AD to work correctly. I have copied the configuration from this page: http://www.observium.org/wiki/Authentication_modules#Active_Directory And made modifications to match our environment (Changing the DN's, suffix, prefix, groups and changed the STARTTLS to FALSE). Our AD is based on Windows 2008R2 To get it working I installed the php5-ldap on the TurnKey distribution using the apt-get install command (and did nothing else than reboot). The normal mysql will let me login as intended (speedy and no delay) - but when switching to LDAP I initially couldn't login "Authentication Failed" until I removed the following line from the configuration file: $config['auth_ldap_group'] = array("CN=Observium Users,OU=Groups,DC=ad,DC=example,DC=com"); (I had of course modified it to math our configuration) When removing the line I am able to login - but the login (and the following page loads) takes around 63 seconds. My questions is: * Why is the page load taking 60+ seconds when using LDAP OR how do I troubleshoot it (seems like a timeout situation) * Why do I need to remove the "auth_ldap_group" line to get it to work? Hello, We are using subscriber edition 0.14.9.5815, polling juniper QFX3500 switch (two switches - Virtual Chassis cluster). After adding the switch and running discovery.php, interface descriptions are recognized just fine, however when the device gets polled for the first time, all interface descriptions get removed. Hello, I am running the paid/SVN version of observium and I have tried a couple of times to setup email alerts and each time I end up breaking my config and having to restore it. Does anyone have any sample configurations I can look at/copy from for simple alerts to a single email address via a network SMTP relay? e.g. mail from observium(a)domain.com<mailto:observium@domain.com> to alerts(a)domain.com<mailto:alerts@domain.com>? Do I require a local postfix install for mail to be dropped into? Overview timestamp delta broken

Since I installed Observium a few weeks ago I have noticed that the overview timestamp for syslog and event log delta is wrong for most (not all) devices, this is prevalent on the main overview and the specific device overview page. By wrong I mean "-1y -1d -xh." etc.. Hovering over the incorrect entry pops up the correct timestamp so I think it's just the logic in calculating the delta between current time and that event that's broken, also viewing the syslogs and entry logs directly with the original timestamp is fine as well. I checked my local timezone and php timezone just to be sure and they are reporting correctly, I would imagine this would break the original timestamp anyway which is not the problem here. Hover over example: I find it particularly weird as not every device is doing this, the ones that are have no real pattern either, mixture of N7K,N5K,ASA etc and some even have a mixture of working and broken entries (individual device overview): [image: Inline image 1] Anyone else seen this, any ideas? I'm a noob and I apologize. I'm having trouble determining if it's the Alert Checkers I am setting up that is not sending me mail or if it's the new mail settings. I've just moved from the old alerts to the new ones. sysLocation location_map rewrite

Hi! I've done my homework and found the previous messages about this subject, nevertheless I would like to express my opinion. I think the current solution (by giving the coordinates in square brackets at the end of the overridden location string) is acceptable, but in the long run the actual location (coordinates) and the user readable location should be kept separate. I mean normally the sysLocation should contain some human readable/understandable string about the location of the server, but the real location - for computer usage - is best given with a Lat/Lon coordinate pair. I think these shouldn't be mixed and only the human readable location should be displayed on the GUI. Anyway, the documentation should be extended with these informations. Maybe the custom_rewrite_location function should be mentioned too, which is used by the code if it is defined in the config.php and could help people with special needs. I'm a new user, so please spare me if I'm wrong. :) Tylla

Guidence needed to fix my Alert Checkers

Hello All, Thank you for the previous support you all provided. I need assistance again to finding the root cause, I often get false alarm on my servers (Windows and Linux). I have 2 Alarm Checkers, 1. System Uptime, it basically checks if any server's uptime is less than 5 minutes, it notify me. 2. Does a ping and snmp check every one minute, if it couldn't reach it alerts me. One of the server, I understand and the issue is with NIC teaming and it flaps, that I have arranged change management ticket so will be fixing it soon. But what I don't understand is, System Uptime triggers stating the uptime has been changed. But in reality no change has been happened. Also sometimes it alerts me Ping checker, for normal servers without bonding/teaming on both Unix and Windows. I checked the system loads, all of them are normal. Could you please let me know your thoughts and any help if available. I wonder if my Alert Checker configuration is wrong. Known bug in the gui ?

Hello, Sorry if it was a know bug but I have a very frustrating bug in the seach bar or link in the overview page. When I click on ports down, or ports disabled I have an empty set result. (but the count is OK). http://observium.test.net/ports/state=down/ => empty set http://observium.test.net/ports/state=admindown/ => empty set Another customic bug is clicking on ignored/alert/ sensors link redirect me to http://observium.test.net/health/ but there is no search bar ?! Sensor Subtypes

So what is the direction that the sensors are heading? Are subtypes going to go away? Or are they the way forward? I saw that alerting for subtypes was just removed, and that the recommendation is to use the general sensor class for alerting. Alerting for subtypes can be made to work with a simple change, however it would also break the generic sensor type. I am just trying to understand if I should just ignore the sensor subtypes altogether because a generic sensor alerting infrastructure is where things are headed. M.

Guys, This might be a general RRD question. So in almost all graphing, we have those shaded color area and solid color line. Although I have a general idea on what they mean, I still want some official explanations regarding their meanings. Thanks. I attached a cpu usage graph here as an example. We have grey shaded area, and solid red line. I guess the red line is some kind of moving average? While grey shows spikes? Or how else could I inteprete this? Thanks a lot. Trail the alerting functionality

Hi All, I am evaluating Observium for a job and I was wondering if any of you know of a way to enable the alerting functionality as a trail? I could not find anything on the website about it but if I cannot trial it first and compare to the other options I have I won't be able to make a case to pay for the subscription. Any info would be much appreciated. Thanks Vin
