Issue with discovery.php -h all and certain cisco devices

Hello, I've run into a problem where the discovery cron seems to error out. I noticed this in checking the polling times where it was at almost 3 days. I ran discovery.php -h all manually from the shell and noticed it would error out to prompt when scanning the same switch everytime. When I put the device causing the issue in ignore it would go through untill it hit another device that errrored it out. Discovery crashing UPS management card

Good morning all, I'm a recent adopter of Observium so still finding my feet and slowly learning how best to set it up. However, I have noticed that since installing it, it was reporting that my main UPS management card was rebooting every 6 hours. The UPS is an Eaton 9SX 5000i + battery pack, with Network-MS management card, firmware HF which is the latest available for card tech level 16. Dabbling more, it seems that it's the discovery process that is causing it, specifically when it walks the xupsOutput table (.1.3.6.1.4.1.534.1.4) in the Powerware MIB, the UPS management card immediately stops responding and reboots. It actually appears to be crashing on doing a GetNext on .1.3.6.1.4.1.534.1.4.7.0, which is beyond the defined values in that table. The UPS continues to operate, but the management card stops. This also means that Observium has only managed to discover the 'input' voltage - output, bypass and current/power readings all just read as zero as the card has stopped responding when it tries to read those. The poll runs fine and gets data from the input voltage sensor. Clearly this is not an Observium issue: I can reproduce the reboot with a simple snmpwalk on the commandline, which should be a valid operation on a published MIB. I do have a ticket open with the manufacturer, although the first response was 'does it work with our management software?'. It may even be a fault on my unit, but I don't have more than one of these to test. I'm assuming there's a reason for the discovery module to need to walk the tables rather than just read the specific values - presumably bigger UPS units might have multiple metered AC inputs and outputs rather than just the one? I could disable sensor discovery, which will stop the reboots but that won't let it learn about the additional sensors that it still hasn't found. Unless I can manually insert data into the database for the poller to pick up? Alternatively, is there a way for me to override the detection of a Powerware UPS and use the generic UPS MIB rather than the XUPS MIB? Any other thoughts? Steve.

Ubuntu 12.04? Does r5229 work on Ubuntu 14.04?

Loving observium, but noticed some issues with it detecting well over 448 ports on a switch that nothing was plugged into except two patch cables but then i just happened to notice php version on Ubuntu 12.04. The Ubuntu installation directions had some conflicting information: Requires php5.4 but Ubuntu 12.04 does not includes php5.3 only. Recommend LTS, but recommend 13.04 which is not LTS. Does not mention 14.04 LTS. The existing community download is from April which provides another reason that Ubuntu 14.04 LTS will not work well since there has not been another release since then. So i am trying to decide to add a PPA for php5.4 or do i upgrade the entire OS to 14.04? Will the April 2014 (SVN# 5229 ) Observium release work just fine on 14.04.

high CPU / slow response

Hi, I'm running the latest version, but it is extremely slow. Even to load the login-page, it takes a very long time. I always see mysqld using almost all CPU-power. the server is running in vmware, os = debian. Currently I have one v-core assigned with 16G of ram. ( already tried with 4 cores.. ) In Observium I have 75 devices with a total of 7500 ports. Please advice ;-) Thank you, Have a good day, Paul

Hi, Is there more documentation on how to setup alert checkers? Maybe there's a list of entities that I can pick from? I wanted to set something up along the lines of: Name: CPU Temp Over 65 Tests (Checker Condition): entSensorValue isBigger 65 Device match (Device Association): type equals network Hostname match *t* (any device with an "n" in it ?) Hostname match *new* (any device with "new" string in it?) Entity Association: entSensorType equals Celsius (monitor temperature?) Not sure how to set that up, Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

Hi, im having some troubles using the poller-wrapper.py , the poller itself worked like charm but when i use the poller-wrapper.py in the cronjob it tells me it can’t connect to the mysql DB. Hi All, u think this is more of a feature request or something i have forgotten to setup i updated my install the other day and i noticed the Average graph for the processors WONDERFUL :-D is it possible to do the same for the temperatures of the cores on the processors? currently my install shows 4 temperature sensors for each core, and i think it would be good if i could get the overall temperature of the CPU instead of each core Regards Simon

Graphs not drawing after latest update

Hi I wonder if someone can help point me in the right direction as to how I can fix an issue with graphs not drawing. We updated to 0.14.6.5588 this morning and I’ve noticed that some graphs are not drawing. We haven’t had any issues with the server and it has been up for 49 days. I’m not sure where to start. So far I’ve tried another SVN update (in case there was a quick fix) and rebooted the server (out of desperation/hope more than anything else). Please let me know if you require any other info. health/overview page is there a way to change what is presented?

I am using observium community edition to monitor a couple systems. Noticed a couple items that seem to make some of the graphs not too useful. The health / Overview section for file systems is the first. It shows file systems with no problem, however it's graphing the file systems based on their percentage used NOT their used byte size. I don't know how others are using this, but here we grow file systems frequently which this produces graphs like the attached. Is there a way to either change what metric is graphed (bytes/ not percentage) or have a another overview graph of file systems with capacity used. This gets much more important with ZFS when you add new vdev's or expand them as like the graph will expand all filesystems on that pool which doesn't seem to be too useful and there can be hundreds. Another question on the same page is the operations/second graphs. This is displaying data twice or more when you are using device mapper you see both the sd* devices as well as the dm-* devices. This is very bad when you're talking about 100's of physical drives (seeing 200 or more depending on how you have it set up with partitions devices). Is there a way to filter out dm-* devices so only sd* ones are calculated/graphed? Steve

Interface Traffic trend

Is there a config option or change I need to make to get the interface traffic trend option to work? I'm running the latest CE version. RRDtool 1.38 and 1.47 versions. Re-enable host where discovery has been disabled?

Hello all, I seem to be in a bit of a pickle. On one of my hosts I enabled the 'Disables polling and discovery' to not have it report while working on it but now I can't seem to find the host to reenable the polling and discovery. I can see reference to it in the 'Delete Devices' page with the caption [disabled] next to it but not anywhere else. Just wondering where or how I can re-enable this host. Custom "alias" for port

Is there no way to set a custom alias for a given port? I want to set the name to "Peering: XXXX" so that it matches the peering type. The reason is because my ex2500 juniper is not properly sending the "name" of the port via snmp thats configured in the switch. Odd issue with Syslog collection

On a recent install of observium, I’ve noticed some oddities with Syslog collection… Some devices are being collected just fine, but others are not. In the example screenshot included below, my firewall ***10, and one switch ***04 are both being collected just fine. But the switches 75***** and *****50 are not. http://i.imgur.com/nxupFzJ.png One thing I noticed was that someone had turned on “service sequence-numbers” on the ****04 switch. Syslog parsing: Issue from IOS XR devices

Hi, I have few devices running Cisco IOS XR. I am sending syslog messages from all devices to Observium. Everything is fine except for the log messages sent by routers running IOS XR. Instead of log Program name, messages sent by XR devices contain an incrementing sequence number, which is being parsed as log Program (Incrementing sequence number being parsed as syslog program = bad. real bad). The actual program name appears much later within the message. I have gone through the sylog configuration guide for XR routers. Couldnt find anything that would alter the message format of what is being sent. I also configured "logging facility syslog" in XR devices, but that didnt resolve the issue. To better explain my situation, I have attached a screenshot. Hopefully it would help. Oh and I am subscriber :) Thanks, Senn

is the nexus' L3 in the global (default) vrf? if *not* then it won't (easily?) work until cisco fixes the (being kind here) "oddball way" that mib exposure happens on the nxos platform. a workaround could be to map out things with snmp contexts that tie in a string per vrf ... but imo that doesn't scale effectively. join the party: go beat up TAC and your sales rep. for how stupid their implementation -- of something pretty fundamental -- is. luck, R. Timeout: No Response from xxxx

Hi, I have latest observium installed and running on a Ubuntu 12.04.4 server and am trying to add another same Ubuntu server to the observium server. I've set up snmpd on the target host. When I run the snmpstatus command from the observium server I get a Timeour: No Response. I've installed the mibs and everything else according to the docs. I can see in the syslog of the target host that the observium server hits it. I can run successfully snmpstatus on the target host and query itself. I can run snmpstatus successfully from another CentOS server. It works from everywhere except the observium server. There are no firewalls involved. Am I doing anything wrong? What info can I send you to help me debug it. Please help Thanks

Hi all, I have a problem with the "Device Traffic"-Graph in Observium (r5581) since I inserted two modules 22Ports (J9536A) into the backplane of a HP 5406zl. It is not plotted anymore as you can see in the attached device-traffic.png. The Error-Message from RRDTool is: RRDTool Output: ERROR: mmaping file '/srv/observium/rrd/x-fra01.tfhbo.de/port-97.rrd': Invalid argument. The file port-97.rrd is empty, but observium added the Ports yesterday. Eventlog: 23-06-2014 18:37:13 Inventory Inventory added: class port, name Port F22, index 217 .... and so on. Maybe it is just a side-effect: All of the other new Ports, are not plotted, too. Any suggestions? Still happening, so I set the device down delay to 2. That has helped, however I am still getting the old school device alerting system emails. How can I disable those? I have port utilization disabled ($config['alerts']['port_util_alert']), etc. But I can't find anything in any docs or searches for disabling device down alerting in the old alerting system. LDAP authentication and user id mapping (user sees no devices)

Hello all, in the moment I try to switch from mysql to LDAP authentication (AD). The LDAP connection seems to work. I can logon to observium using my LDAP credentials. But the user mapping to permissions does not work. In observium the user sees no devices. The mapping is set as follows: $config['auth_ldap_groups']['Observium_Admin']['level'] = 10; $config['auth_ldap_groups']['Observium_User']['level'] = 1; In Wireshark I could see that the right group (Observium_Admin) was matched. Debug shows something like: SELECT * FROM `entity_permissions` WHERE `user_id` = '-1' SELECT `value` FROM `users_prefs` WHERE `user_id` = '-1' AND `pref` = 'atom_key' What to try next? SysobjectID for AIX

Hello, I compiled net-snmp for AIX on my two AIX 5.3 servers. Since doing so the sysobjectid now returns net-snmp.aix rather than one that designates for AIX. I can set the sysobjectid in the snmp.conf. I have been looking for what to set that to so observium knows that it is an AIX server rather than a generic server. Does anyone have the oid that reflects AIX for sysobjectid? Thanks, Mike

No VRFs being discovered on Cisco 3750 Stacks

Hi Guys, Recently I've started monitoring some of our edge routers using Observium and have found that VRFs don't appear to get found during discovery. I found an old post from last year where Adam advised that VRF tracking in Observium is currently considered "broken and unstable". (http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.network.observium.general/3159). Here is a snip from a discovery of one of our edge devices running a handful of VRFs: dot1d id ifIndex Port Name Priority State Cost 504 5003 Port-channel3 128 forwarding 3 Cisco Pseudowires : VRFs : SLAs : UCD Disk IO : Discovered in 6.686 seconds I'm guessing this may be a lower priority to devs at the moment but it is something we'd be requiring before we can fully move away from our other unnamed/expensive monitoring solution as we need to enable alerting for BGP instances bound to specific VRFs. If this is still an ongoing issue is this perhaps something we could offer the devs financial incentive in the form of donations to bump the priority a bit? Alternatively if this has since been patched am I doing something wrong? Aruba Instant AP -- No client or AP information

Traffic Accounting - Can't add new Ports (0.14.6.5571)

Hi List, We currently monitor some dd-wrt devices. Observium is showing tun0 and ppp0 as down. I am guessing this is due to the interface speed set to 0. Is there a way to bypass this check ? It does look a bit weird to have a down interface with traffic on it. We are currently running the community ed. Changing to pro soon. Thanks, Pieter

Yeah, you are confused. Humidity is an example. Rather than alerts being created for 'sensors' they can now be created for 'temperature' or other sensor types directly. Also, humidity is important in a data centre environment, and is monitored by a lot of environmental monitoring systems along with temperature. Adam. apc power switch

Hi all, We currently use an old APC power switch to remotely switch servers on and off and the observium can detect its an APC :-) however i don’t get any graphs for it ? no power usage? no temperature ? nothing ? is the any form of graphs i could get outta it for use with the observium ? the web card is an old AP9606 and the unit is an AP9212 Regards Simon

DRBD with Unix Agent, doesn't show data on Graphics

Hello, I have implemented the DRBD with the Unix Agent on one of the nodes of our Storage Cluster but sadly I cannot see any Info on the Graphics in Observium. Agent is running ok on the Server. Smokeping, Rancid and Observium

Yeah you are hijacking a thread, but whatever. I'll change the subject line and start a new thread :) I have rancid and websvn running on the same box. That box is separate from observium. I did this because I wanted rancid to run on a vm. Having it on a VM gives me somewhat of redundancy. Depending on the number of threads and number of devices you give rancid, it could interfere with observium. The server that runs observium comes into play as well. The more devices and more ports you have, the more threads you need. Observium is much more important to me than rancid; however, rancid is really important. That is another reason why I separated them. Then I have an NFS mount between rancid and observium so it can see rancid. I don't have a history of configurations in observium. I am not sure how that works. That's where websvn excels. With websvn the network guys can see what changed between revisions. So with websvn, I didn't spend much time on setting up history of configuration changes in observium. I haven't setup smokeping. The network guys always tell me they don't care about icmp testing to determine latency. Mainly because some routers/switches, that participate in QoS, will make icmp lowest priority and put the router traffic, voice traffic, and sometimes video traffic (depending on the device) higher priority. The part that I love though is when I am working with them to troubleshoot a network problem, they want a trace route. I always say to them well I thought you didn't care about icmp and trace route uses icmp. :) Inside observium in the graph section of the device in the subsection of poller, it shows icmp response. I think that is enough for me and the network guys. Hi, Currently I have about 100 devices and 8000+ ports (dot1q sub interfaces, pseudowires, etc). I don't have any performance issues. But... Currently I have 300+ interfaces classified as "customer". It takes about 9 seconds for the page to load because everything get loaded all at once. My actual customer interfaces would easily exceed 1000. Is there a way I can paginate Ports > Customers? Much like how it's presented in Ports > All Ports? Or is this something that is currently not possible? Thanks

I know that observium only goes into the directory and retrieves the configurations and displays it, but how do I display the older version? Rancid configs need to have identical names to the host devices in observium.... Observium Gone Crazy, bro?

I could only get rid of it with an explicit sql-mode="" in my.cnf whereas I couldn't find another config file anywhere on the system. But wouldn't it make more sense to just add a default value of "0" to all columns?
