API access key

Evening All, I've noticed in the settings, the option for "API access key" but it doesn't yet seem that it's implemented. We're currently looking at doing some development to pull the graphs for services from Observium and inject them in to our Client Portal so that clients get nice pretty graphs. windows wmi monitoring

Hi All, hoping someone can help, altho I'm sure this has been answered in the past? i just can’t find the webpage or emails from it at all i want to monitor a few windows machines i have setup the SNMP correctly and all is well but the processor is being detected as Unknown Processor Type due to windows being a tool! i read somewhere that i could use the WMI to fix this issue plus get more outta the windows machine dos anyone have a guide or instructions how to setup the WMI correctly to identify things for observium? Hi all, I hope someone can help, I'm sure this has been answered before? - Sorry in advance! I want to monitor a few Linux machines with ambient temperature sensing devices. The NetSNMPd Client Configuration is working and I get a successful response as you can see: ~# snmpget -v 2c temphost -c public .1.3.6.1.2.1.25.1.10 HOST-RESOURCES-MIB::hrSystem.9 = Gauge32: 23000 How can I modify the host configuration to add the ambient Temperature information in the Observium? ifLastChange usage query

Looking at an operational issue where we had a small interface flap between polls, so link state between polls hasn't changed, but iFLastChange has. Looking at the 'data' view through the UI for the port ifLastChanged doesn't appeared to have changed, and looking through the poller code it appears perhaps it is only updated on a change of operational/admin status on a port? Would there be any use in poller updating it in the db if it was different to the existing value in the port cache ? It would be interesting to be able to alert on 'ifLastChange' < 'some value' .. Or just have the update in the EventLog so when having a look-see at a device it is apparent that a link flap has occurred. A visual indicator in ports basic/detailed view for 'last change' < 'some global config value' like a little exclamation mark or something potentially could be useful to operators to 'spot' issues. Imagine being able to view ports, sort on 'LastChange' during an incident to 'spot' potential causes of issues? Would any of this make sense to anyone? Cheers, Peter

Allied Telesis Support

Hi All, Currently playing with Observium which is brilliant, except when an Allied Telesis switch (running Alliedware Plus) is discovered only basic info is retrieved (Uptime, OS, location, etc), which then causes the issue of halting auto discovery.. The specific model is an AT-9000/28SP. Anyone aware if this switch is supported or not? question about cisco switch discovery/polling

we've got a Cisco WS-C4510R+E switch after discovering and polling it,, it now shows 3 entries for each port 1 is the expected/desired one "64-bit" port and 2 unknown/undesired "Controlled" and "Uncontrolled" 32-bit ports. question why are we seeing them ? how to we get rid of them ? this is making management of this device painfully slow .. takes more then 30 seconds (closer to one minute) for the page to load thanks -Steve -- *This message and any files or text attached to it are intended only for the recipients named above, and contain information that is confidential or privileged. You still need SNMP to poll the device. Once added you can configure IPMI to gather stats from IPMI. Discoverying and polling VRF, OSPF and BGP Processes on Nexus 7K : where to start coding

Hi, I would like to give a try to code some PHP Patchs, so that Observium can discover VRF, OSPF, BGP and so on Nexus 7K platform (our reference will be Nexus 7700 with NX-OS 6.2). We are implementing "VRF-Lite" style (no MPLS), so according to Cisco documentation, it is mandatory to map in NX-OS configuration, a SNMP Context (v3) to each instance of VRF, OSPF, BGP, whatever .... My try will be to first discover the context mapping with this Cisco MIB : CISCO-CONTEXT-MAPPING-MIB.my and then to iterate on these mappings using an additional function like "get snmp walk/bulk with context" on these contexts. Do you have any advice how I could do that ? Which files should I implement / pacth ? Which files could I use as examples and inspiration ? adjusting bandwidth graphs to what the client is paying for

Hi, Just checking out the software for the first time and really liking it. We are using PRTG now and of the things we like about it is per interface we are monitoring, we can set the max x-axis value. It helps our tech's to know what speed Internet connection a client is paying for. We will hand off a 100Mbps interface to the client, but if they are only paying for 20Mbps, we will shape the traffic down to 20Mbps on the router. When you look at the percent graph in Observium, it's based on a 100Mbps max possible speed instead of 20Mbps. Thanks!

delete old lmsensors

Hi All, i know this is probably a stupid question, but how do i delete sensors from within the panel and not on the server itself im monitoring? for some reason the observium has detected lmsensors fanspeed sensors about 4 times over? and im not sure if its the server at fault or observium at fault, so i was just going to delete the old fanspeed sensors ? i have attached some screenshots if people don’t understand what im talking about Regards Simon

Using PHP Weathermap with Observium

Hello! We are migrating from Cacti to Observium and it was a great experience, the only thing we lacked were the weathermap plugin for getting that nice network overview. I then found that Neil Lathwood wrote a modified version of the PHP Weathermap that works with Observium data, you can find it on his github: https://github.com/laf/weathermap I wrote a quick and dirty script that adds the weathermaps to the Observium menu without modifying Observium-code so that it will not break when updating Observium. Simple API calls fail

Hello list, After an upgrade recently, our Simple API calls have been failing. PPPoE ports not displaying in Observium Discovery

Hi All, We are seeing an interesting issue when looking at a Mikrotik Routerboard (RB951 MikroTik RouterOS 6.13) When performing an snmpwalk of the device, we see the pppoe client interfaces (counters, gauges, timers etc) as expected. Hi all. I've enabled e-mail notifications in the configuration file (commercial version). How do I disable, for example, temperature notifications? Better poller for Observium

Hello While Observium has a nice interface, it's database lacks foreign keys a lot, and poller.php is AWFUL. It's slow and unreadable. I've started a new, about 40-50 times lighter observium poller https://github.com/tarkhil/observium-poller It supports only SNMP for now, and is work-in-progress. Only os, processor and memory modules are working, and ports is about 50% finished. If anyone is interested, please join. I'm sure to complete SNMP support for Cisco, but quite unsure if I'll be interested in implementing much else. Alex

Interesting experiment with poll over SSH

We have a host about 320ms from our observium node (yes.. The other side of the planet). Doing a full poll circa 650-700ms (including mac and bgp tables... Its a IOS-XR ASR9K ..). Adjusting the Cr/max-reps did increase speeds, and caused several nasty snmpd explosions on the chassis. As a exercise in interest I spun up a VM much closer to the host, unpacked /opt/observium/mibs etc and configured snmp on that remote host. So I also did this root@obs1:/opt/observium# cat ~/.ssh/config Host remote-poller-node # HostName machine1.example.org ControlPath ~/.ssh/controlmasters/%r@%h:%p ControlMaster auto ControlPersist 10m This means that a ssh 'master instance' was setup at the start of the poll, and hangs around in the background between executions of various snmpcmd's during the poll. [SOLVED] Housekeeping not deleting records if you have a stupid number to kill.

I have a rather old and crufty installation of Observium (now at 5668) with over 70 million syslog, eventlog, and timing records that are older than 7 days. The first time I ran housekeeping -s to trim syslog messages it took about 30 minutes to return showing 42 million records. Just to be sure I was actually done deleting 42 million records, I re-ran the command. The same 42 million records were found. Meh. I ran the housekeeping in debug mode and noticed that I didn't have posix support installed. So I installed the php-process package and tried again. Still no records deleted. I tried deleting fewer records by keeping 18 months worth and that didn't help either. Here's the debug output from attempting to delete records older than 7 days: [root@xxx ~]# php /opt/observium/housekeeping.php -s -d DEBUG! SQL[SELECT COUNT(*) FROM `syslog` WHERE UNIX_TIMESTAMP(`timestamp`) < 1405322208;] 42123350 syslog entries from before 2014-07-14 15:16:48 will be deleted [y/N]: y SQL[DELETE FROM `syslog` WHERE UNIX_TIMESTAMP(`timestamp`) < 1405322208;] Syslog housekeeping: deleted entries Deleting the eventlog records also fails to remove the records: [root@xxxx observium]# php housekeeping.php -e -d DEBUG! SQL[SELECT COUNT(*) FROM `eventlog` WHERE UNIX_TIMESTAMP(`timestamp`) < 1380059875;] 29289378 eventlog entries from before 2013-09-25 05:57:55 will be deleted [y/N]: y SQL[DELETE FROM `eventlog` WHERE UNIX_TIMESTAMP(`timestamp`) < 1380059875] Event log housekeeping: deleted entries (As an aside, I'm not sure, but there may be a semi-colon missing on the delete statement for event log records.) What I eventually found was that trying to delete this many records exhausts the lock table (?). Adjusting the LIMIT up and down eventually got me where I was going. Now that I have it the system down to a reasonable number of records, a nightly/weekly cron job should do just fine. Thanks for the effort you put into this Tom. For me, this was like a hardware upgrade.

Login issue. IP works hostname does not?

I have a strange issue that I cannot resolve. I have a recent install of the community edition on Ubuntu 14.04. Only difference is the sites available directive changes to make it work compared to the official install docs. Everything was working perfectly and I could login via IP, hostname, or FQDN. The server is a VMware VM and I forgot to install the VMware tools so our VMware monitoring software would stop complaining. I installed the tools and rebooted and now I can only login via the IP. If I try via hostname etc the form just clears with no errors. Adding /debug=1/ shows the mysql commands etc but no errors. I have checked all the hostname settings, defaulted the host file, checked the apache and site configs and nothing working. Seems like a php issue to me. Any ideas? I work for an MSP and am looking for a solution that has agents that act as collectors/relays to the main server. This networks and devices that need to be monitored are not directly connected on. PRTG has something like this - if that helps you understand what I'm asking about. Moving obvsevium to a new host

I ended up pulling down the latest version from SVN, but to move the actual data over do I need to move anything other than the RRD directory, the config file, and the MySQL database? Housekeeping script

Hi everyone, Yesterday I committed a housekeeping script to clean up after Observium. If you have a nice number of devices combined with a long running time of Observium, you're sure to have a gigantic database of event log, syslog and performance timing information. Some of you have resorted to periodically truncating tables - fear no more, housekeeping.php is here! You have a choice of specifying either -a for all modules or s, e, r, p and/or t for specific things. Apart from that, there are options in the configuration to set before most of these things actually do anything. What it does: -s Cleans up syslog data, based on the age of the entries. Configured by $config['housekeeping']['syslog']['age'] = 0; // Maximum age of syslog entries in seconds; 0 to disable i.e. 7*86400 for 7 days. -e Cleans up eventlog data, based on the age of the entries. Configured by $config['housekeeping']['eventlog']['age'] = 0; // Maximum age of eventlog entries in seconds; 0 to disable i.e. 30*86400 for 30 days. -r Cleans up RRD files, there are 2 options here: Cleanup of RRD files with a modification time of a certain age. Ports that are gone, sensors that are gone, erroneaously created RRD files due to bugs or hardware changes, etc. Configured by $config['housekeeping']['rrd']['age'] = 0; // Maximum age of unused rrd files in seconds before automatically purging; 0 to disable i.e. 90*86400 for 90 days. Cleanup of invalid RRD files. Requires $config['file'] to be set correctly to the path of the "file" magic utility. Runs over all .rrd files to see if they are identified as RRDTool Databases. They can sometimes get corrupted (0 bytes, half a file) when your disk/ramdrive is full. When they exist, they are not recreated even if they're invalid. Consequently RRDtool refuses to add data into them as they are not valid RRD database files. This scripts deletes any .rrd file not identified as RRDTool. Configured by $config['housekeeping']['rrd']['invalid'] = TRUE; // Delete .rrd files that are not valid RRD files (eg created with a full disk) Note: this defaults to true currently. Handle with care. -p Cleans up deleted ports. You can do this manually by using the purge button in the web interface, but one could probably safely assume if a port has not returned after 30 days it really is gone. Shorter could be useful in your environment, mine is set to 7 days. Configured by $config['housekeeping']['deleted_ports']['age'] = 0; // Maximum age of deleted ports in seconds before automatically purging; 0 to disable i.e. 30*86400 for 30 days. -t: Cleans up perf time information. Observium keeps performance times per module, per device and per run. This quickly accumulates into a giant number of rows in the database. Configured by $config['housekeeping']['timing']['age'] = 0; // Maximum age of timing (discovery and poll time) entries in seconds; 0 to disable i.e. 7*86400 for 7 days. Housekeeping logs into housekeeping.log in the log_dir. (*) I recommend putting this into cron, daily or weekly (yes, even though the age is set in seconds, I don't recommend running it every minute ;), but only after you've run it manually once. It'll take quite a while the first time to clean up large databases. The "check for invalid RRD files" is probably quite I/O heavy. i'll be documenting this on the wiki soonish. (*) log_dir was also added as a new configuration directive, it defaults to ${installdir}/logs which will be created automatically for you if possible. Tom

Issue with discovery.php -h all and certain cisco devices

Hello, I've run into a problem where the discovery cron seems to error out. I noticed this in checking the polling times where it was at almost 3 days. I ran discovery.php -h all manually from the shell and noticed it would error out to prompt when scanning the same switch everytime. When I put the device causing the issue in ignore it would go through untill it hit another device that errrored it out. Discovery crashing UPS management card

Good morning all, I'm a recent adopter of Observium so still finding my feet and slowly learning how best to set it up. However, I have noticed that since installing it, it was reporting that my main UPS management card was rebooting every 6 hours. The UPS is an Eaton 9SX 5000i + battery pack, with Network-MS management card, firmware HF which is the latest available for card tech level 16. Dabbling more, it seems that it's the discovery process that is causing it, specifically when it walks the xupsOutput table (.1.3.6.1.4.1.534.1.4) in the Powerware MIB, the UPS management card immediately stops responding and reboots. It actually appears to be crashing on doing a GetNext on .1.3.6.1.4.1.534.1.4.7.0, which is beyond the defined values in that table. The UPS continues to operate, but the management card stops. This also means that Observium has only managed to discover the 'input' voltage - output, bypass and current/power readings all just read as zero as the card has stopped responding when it tries to read those. The poll runs fine and gets data from the input voltage sensor. Clearly this is not an Observium issue: I can reproduce the reboot with a simple snmpwalk on the commandline, which should be a valid operation on a published MIB. I do have a ticket open with the manufacturer, although the first response was 'does it work with our management software?'. It may even be a fault on my unit, but I don't have more than one of these to test. I'm assuming there's a reason for the discovery module to need to walk the tables rather than just read the specific values - presumably bigger UPS units might have multiple metered AC inputs and outputs rather than just the one? I could disable sensor discovery, which will stop the reboots but that won't let it learn about the additional sensors that it still hasn't found. Unless I can manually insert data into the database for the poller to pick up? Alternatively, is there a way for me to override the detection of a Powerware UPS and use the generic UPS MIB rather than the XUPS MIB? Any other thoughts? Steve.

Ubuntu 12.04? Does r5229 work on Ubuntu 14.04?

Loving observium, but noticed some issues with it detecting well over 448 ports on a switch that nothing was plugged into except two patch cables but then i just happened to notice php version on Ubuntu 12.04. The Ubuntu installation directions had some conflicting information: Requires php5.4 but Ubuntu 12.04 does not includes php5.3 only. Recommend LTS, but recommend 13.04 which is not LTS. Does not mention 14.04 LTS. The existing community download is from April which provides another reason that Ubuntu 14.04 LTS will not work well since there has not been another release since then. So i am trying to decide to add a PPA for php5.4 or do i upgrade the entire OS to 14.04? Will the April 2014 (SVN# 5229 ) Observium release work just fine on 14.04.

high CPU / slow response

Hi, I'm running the latest version, but it is extremely slow. Even to load the login-page, it takes a very long time. I always see mysqld using almost all CPU-power. the server is running in vmware, os = debian. Currently I have one v-core assigned with 16G of ram. ( already tried with 4 cores.. ) In Observium I have 75 devices with a total of 7500 ports. Please advice ;-) Thank you, Have a good day, Paul

Hi, Is there more documentation on how to setup alert checkers? Maybe there's a list of entities that I can pick from? I wanted to set something up along the lines of: Name: CPU Temp Over 65 Tests (Checker Condition): entSensorValue isBigger 65 Device match (Device Association): type equals network Hostname match *t* (any device with an "n" in it ?) Hostname match *new* (any device with "new" string in it?) Entity Association: entSensorType equals Celsius (monitor temperature?) Not sure how to set that up, Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

Hi, im having some troubles using the poller-wrapper.py , the poller itself worked like charm but when i use the poller-wrapper.py in the cronjob it tells me it can’t connect to the mysql DB. Hi All, u think this is more of a feature request or something i have forgotten to setup i updated my install the other day and i noticed the Average graph for the processors WONDERFUL :-D is it possible to do the same for the temperatures of the cores on the processors? currently my install shows 4 temperature sensors for each core, and i think it would be good if i could get the overall temperature of the CPU instead of each core Regards Simon

The alert duration is more than the device uptime. Graphs not drawing after latest update

Hi I wonder if someone can help point me in the right direction as to how I can fix an issue with graphs not drawing. We updated to 0.14.6.5588 this morning and I’ve noticed that some graphs are not drawing. We haven’t had any issues with the server and it has been up for 49 days. I’m not sure where to start. So far I’ve tried another SVN update (in case there was a quick fix) and rebooted the server (out of desperation/hope more than anything else). Please let me know if you require any other info. health/overview page is there a way to change what is presented?

I am using observium community edition to monitor a couple systems. Noticed a couple items that seem to make some of the graphs not too useful. The health / Overview section for file systems is the first. It shows file systems with no problem, however it's graphing the file systems based on their percentage used NOT their used byte size. I don't know how others are using this, but here we grow file systems frequently which this produces graphs like the attached. Is there a way to either change what metric is graphed (bytes/ not percentage) or have a another overview graph of file systems with capacity used. This gets much more important with ZFS when you add new vdev's or expand them as like the graph will expand all filesystems on that pool which doesn't seem to be too useful and there can be hundreds. Another question on the same page is the operations/second graphs. This is displaying data twice or more when you are using device mapper you see both the sd* devices as well as the dm-* devices. This is very bad when you're talking about 100's of physical drives (seeing 200 or more depending on how you have it set up with partitions devices). Is there a way to filter out dm-* devices so only sd* ones are calculated/graphed? Steve

Interface Traffic trend

Re-enable host where discovery has been disabled?

Hello all, I seem to be in a bit of a pickle. On one of my hosts I enabled the 'Disables polling and discovery' to not have it report while working on it but now I can't seem to find the host to reenable the polling and discovery. I can see reference to it in the 'Delete Devices' page with the caption [disabled] next to it but not anywhere else. Just wondering where or how I can re-enable this host. Custom "alias" for port

Is there no way to set a custom alias for a given port? I want to set the name to "Peering: XXXX" so that it matches the peering type. The reason is because my ex2500 juniper is not properly sending the "name" of the port via snmp thats configured in the switch. I created a small php script to clean that (using crontab), do you like to have this contrib ? Odd issue with Syslog collection

On a recent install of observium, I’ve noticed some oddities with Syslog collection… Some devices are being collected just fine, but others are not. In the example screenshot included below, my firewall ***10, and one switch ***04 are both being collected just fine. But the switches 75***** and *****50 are not. http://i.imgur.com/nxupFzJ.png One thing I noticed was that someone had turned on “service sequence-numbers” on the ****04 switch. to make it go away, could try getting rid of the "service log sequence numbers" (or whatever exact syntax it is) in the device's ios config if you don't need the sequence numbering for audit, that's easier than trying to hack in a new syslog-ng.conf template. luck, R.

Syslog parsing: Issue from IOS XR devices

Hi, I have few devices running Cisco IOS XR. I am sending syslog messages from all devices to Observium. Everything is fine except for the log messages sent by routers running IOS XR. Instead of log Program name, messages sent by XR devices contain an incrementing sequence number, which is being parsed as log Program (Incrementing sequence number being parsed as syslog program = bad. real bad). The actual program name appears much later within the message. I have gone through the sylog configuration guide for XR routers. Couldnt find anything that would alter the message format of what is being sent. I also configured "logging facility syslog" in XR devices, but that didnt resolve the issue. GPS data on Syslocation
