DNS Aliases

Hi, I understand that Observium needs the hostnames to be valid, so we tweaked our hosts file with a regex to add an alias to match the device hostnames (as our initial names had some extra info in the names not on the hosts). But this appears to allow me to add devices manually but autodiscovery doesn't seem to be working. Does Observium need it to be the 'main' resolvable hostname rather than an alias? Regards, Emma

Billing View display issue

Hey all, We made a topographical change to a portion of our network last night - to be specific, we separated a large fiber ring into two smaller rings. After this change was made, the Billing View in Traffic Accounting is not displaying new data. Here's the kicker, the data is there; 24 Hour View and Monthly View display as expected. It seems to only affect the Billing View - screenshots attached. This isn't so much of a problem, just an oddity that I noticed. Anyone have a theory here? Regards, SG

Cisco WLC monitoring

Hi all! I know, this is a pretty discussed topic, but from this discussions plans and current state of Cisco's WLC monitoring are not obvious. When I've tried to add it to Observium, it wa correctly identified as Wi-Fi device type, but only device traffic and system temperature are shown on the main page, no CPU, memory are available. imo, 1920 will be common for quite a while yet. any chance you can make the scaling formulaic, based on a config parameter? that way you only have to do it once, forever. (bonus: mbp folks are happy, you can be lazy when 8k shows up, etc…) R. PostgreSQL Application monitoring

Hi I want to monitor Postgres servers and was wondering the best way to go about this. On the master server there are several clusters each with a number of databases. On the replication servers the same exists but I’d like to monitor the streaming replication delay. I’m just wondering what the best layout would be to bring the data into Observium? MIB files to compile?

Hi there, this may sound a bit stupid but I need to know this for sure: MIB files in Observium don't have to be compiled but to be available under /opt/obersium/mibs/ or(!)/opt/obersium/mibs/[vendor]? Background is a strange feeling that some MIBs are not used at all - so the second question is: how to validate that Observium uses the correct ones so I can verify either that I've done something incomplete or the affected MIBs are not valid or incomplete at all. ricoh toner level 150%

Graphing Apple Airport traffic

Firstly, I have to say how impressed I am with the clean, purposeful implementation of Observium. One of the main reasons I was looking for such an SNMP network manager was to monitor my four apple airport base stations. Whilst Observium recognises such devices, and graphs the wirelessNumber from the AIRPORT-BASESTATION-3-MIB if does not graph the corresponding physicalInterfacesTable traffic. Whilst the ifTable is graphed this doesn't actually include the wireless connections. This information would be very useful to determine how many packets are being passed on the wireless interface and at what speed. I've yet to dig into the structure of the code much, but presumably the physicalInterfacesTable could be logged/graphed using code very similar to that used for the ifTable. Something that would also be very useful, would be to list the currently attached clients which could be reported in a similar manner to the ARP/NDP Table using information sourced from the wirelessClientsTable to display MAC address and speed/signal strength/noise. This information could be instantaneous rather than logged as the airport base stations appear not to actually return the number of packets passed despite the MIB supporting this. This looks like the simpler task. Finally, some might be interested in the DHCP allocations, but as I run all my base stations in bridged mode that wouldn't be of interest to be. So, before I start looking at the code, I thought I should ask if anybody is already looking into this? Thanks, Steve

Howdy folks. Can anyone please help provide me some syntax to try debugging the geocoding calls that place devices properly on the map? I'm running 2 installations[Observium CE 0.13.10.4586]: - 1 test host (geocoding works great) - 1 production host (geocoding isn't working) The prod host is behind proxies whereas the test host is not, so I'm next to 110% positive that this is what's preventing the geocoding calls from functioning, but I could use a hand in how to further debug the details of where/how it's failing. I've specified the proxy server details in the config.php file, but am not confident that connections are actually getting through. It's quite possible that the geocoding URLs are not currently permitted through the proxies. I need some more ammo though to go back to my proxy admins so that I can get their help in permitting this connectivity if it's denied. Are thereany commands I can run or debugging flags I can toggle to help extract more details? Hi, I recently installed Observium CE and noticed some very weird behavior. Observium monitors currently 3 devices: 1 Debian Server + 1 Debian workstation + 1 Ubuntu workstation. The Debian workstation is shutdown overnight and rebooted in the morning, nicely shown in the Event logging: Shutdown: *<date time> System Device status changed to Down (ping)* Reboot: *<date time> System Device status changed to Up <date time> Reboot Device rebooted after <hours min sec> * That's all fine. But now the weird thing is that for the Server the Event log says almost at the same time: *<date time> System Device status changed to Down (snmp)* and when the workstation is rebooted, the Server Event log says at almost the same time: *<date time> System Device status changed to Up* Graphs for the server don't get updated/have data for the time the Debian workstation is down. The Ubuntu workstation runs 24/7 and graphs get properly updated during time the Debian workstation is down. I would expect that what happened with the workstation should have no effect on the data collection of the Server. Details: Observium CE 0.14.4.5229 OS Debian 7 (Server + Workstation) Ubuntu 10.40 LTS (Workstation 24/7) How do I get this working properly? Thanx, Pieter

is anyone else seeing a 500 apache error and blank login after upgrade to 5536? im not seeing anything in the logs to suggest errors, and it was working fine prior to upgrade last entry in observium.log is just prior to upgrade machine is ubuntu precise running observium on amazon ec2 beautifully. if I’m alone on this it must be the machine/instance thanks in advance NT

Odd issue with recent update - UnpingableRRD & UnpingableMySQL

All, We’ve been running Observium on Ubnutu 12.04 for a little over a year now, and after applying the latest community update, we seem to have devices periodically reporting as down. IPSec Tunnels

All, I've noticed that for Cisco ASAs the Routing--IPSec Tunnels section is not accurate. It lists all tunnels that have ever been made and marks them as active, even though the tunnel may not exist anymore. I believe that the OID shows the active tunnels is 1.3.6.1.4.1.9.9.171.1.2.3.1.7 Also, is there a way to alert on this list changing? Hi Guys, Would it be possible to add a new device type to Observium? We would like a device type for 'Spam Filter' devices. It doesn't have to automatically change the Type to it, we can do that manually. Monitoring Interface names

I would like to ensure that interface names conform to certain standard. I'm stuck at 'Check Conditions' phase of making an alert. If I understand everything right, then there's no ifName metric available for a match condition, or am I doing something else wrong? Any suggestions? If I'm right, then can ifName be added as a metric?

cosmetic question

Hi there, I have two routers in different location connected over IPSEC-VPN. Both devices are actively monitored which works fine. Now I am wondering how to make this interconnect visible on the map. Is there an option I have overseen? Alternatively if IPSEC isn't "supported" in this way what protocols would result in a visible connection? Thanks in advance! Björn

Feature request: Firewall flow statistics

Hi all, We would like to graph the amount of sessions through our Juniper SRX firewalls with Observium. (snmp oid: .1.3.6.1.4.1.2636.3.39.1.12.1.1.1.6.0) It would be a really nice feature and in the past (when we used cacti) it has helped us detecting a problem with software on one of our servers. I'd really like to see that in Oberservium and maybe others can benefit as well. missing port description in traffic bills edit mode

Hi, I just wanted to change a traffic bill and delete a port, if editing the traffic bill, the port list on the right hand side shows only the delete button but no port description. I found that in revision 5521 and verified it with Firefox, Chrome and Safari. So it does not seem to be browser specific. Could you please look into it ? Regards, Andre

WMI Module Observium

Hello, I have the following case. I am useing Observium to monitor a few Windows Server 200 R2 VM's. Some machines can't get there disks polled because of a BDEdrive partition (because of this partition the poll times go up to 60 sec/per machine as wel). As workarround i have disabled the storage poller module (the polling time goes down to 3 sec), and enabled the WMI poller module. The wmi poller module works nice. Polling of the Disk partition works as wel! There is only one problem, the graphs/logs for diskspace dont get written to the rdd files when using the wmi disk poller module. Is this a know problem and if so, is there a fix or setting that I could use? Kind regards, Jeremy

Hi , The current health monitoring top menu report ( http://x.x.x.x/health/metric=processor/ ) displays the items in the alphabetical order of the device name. Graphing/data problem

Hi guys, We just started having this problem on Friday and am not sure where to look for the problem. Some of our data just doesn't show up anymore. See the attached image. Some servers work fine and some don't. The 6 hour view will work ok, but the historical data seems to have disappeard. We are seeing odd ?'s on many of the graphs installed of numbers. Hy observium-users, we're using observium with many devices and all sensors report a correct state. But with Mikrotik RB2011 we're getting temperature and voltage warnings from "System 0". Hi, Having recently purchased Observium Professional Edition, I have a question on Alerting for high delay to the device. I've configured an Alert Checker with parameters: - Tests: device_ping gt 40 (assuming RTT to the device not to exceed 40ms); - Device match: os equals ios - Entity match: <hostname> - Entity type: Device Actually, this checker applies not to the Device itself, but to the Ports of the Device, resulting in incorrect checks. I assume, that device_reboot checker will act in a similar way and won't trigger an alert. Can anyone provide a working config on this Alert type? ---- Best, Sergey Homyakov

Hello, I am looking for a tool that can allow me to monitor customer's physical servers as well as my virtual servers (I have some, not too many Linux/CPanel servers and Windows VPS). This is a list of the tools I have been recommended along with Observium https://nodequery.com/ sar newrelic naemon nagios Icinga I think nagios and similars are too much for me, however I don´t know if Observium has all what I need, can you help me with that? Some of the features I need are: 1. Load/performance monitoring applications like Apache, MySQL, Exim (email) 2. Exim queque size (for preventing spam issues) 3. Auto refresh default setting

Hey guys, Subs version, I like to leave the default view page, as Network >> Bits so that I see ALL spikes fairly quickly, and can react if I see anything, however for the love of god, inc F5 / Hard refresh, I cannot get the screen to default to loading say the last 6 hours. Anyway of doing this, and let me provide the URL I am sitting at : http://my.observiumURL.com/devices/type=network/format=graphs/disabled=0/so… Now anything to make this simply autorefresh in the last 6 hours AUTOMATICALLY would be great - beer tokens available. Dell Hardware Sensors

Very little information about this in the Wiki or configuration guide. I would like to get hardware sensors working in Observium for Dell servers, PE 2950, R310, R610, etc. I want to alert when any sensor is not OK. For example, hard drive failure, power supply failure, etc. >From what I think is possible. That information is available in SNMP on a physical Linux server if you setup SNMP SMUX Peer to the Dell OpenManage agent running on the server? Does Observium support it? However, it appears this is not possible on physical Windows? As well, as it look like that hardware SNMP nformation is not available either on ESXi 5+ because of lack of SNMP support integration with Dell OpenManage agent VIB. I'm on correct on this? Or can Observium get this hardware health from WS-MAN on ESXi, or IPMI to iDRAC hardware card? It would be awesome to see a Observium definitive hardware monitoring guide for Dell and then HP. Any information or help would be appreciated! Observium rocks! Oh, and the Alerting system in Pro is awesome! However, little bit of a learning curve. I created 9 alerts that I think should cover most issues. Such as high cpu, low memory, device down, device rebooted, network port at half duplex, network port down, high port utilization, etc. It would have been ideal if there was a Wiki page with all of those just laid out for examples. Edit bill ports display bug

Hey all, I've noticed a display issue on the Edit Bill view, specifically within the Bill Ports section - see attached. The ports display without issue when viewing the bill, but do not appear at all (except for the delete button) in the Edit view. Looks like this issue is present in r5478 and r5492. Hi, i have noticed when the Observium is sending alerts to me, our mailcleaner is blocking them, one reason is because the Message-ID is invalid or corrupted when it was sent !? for some reason seeing the Message-ID is being seen and sent as msgid=<cb0e6df8f4186cc23b4ba07c8bb65af4@> i got this information from my sendmail mail.log file and our mailcleaner logs too is this a bug in sendmail or the observium? regards Simon

Geocoding shows wrong locations

Hi there, I am running several VLAN in a distributed environment in Germany. I am using the longitude/latitude options to finally not ending up on "An island in the middle of the ocean". Yesterday I added another two VLANs and the map shows devices inside e.g. in India. As I am using private subnet ranges, only, I am wondering why this happens at all and could be done to get over of this little trouble. Subnets I am using are: 192.168.50.0/24 192.168.55.0/24 192.168.60.0/24 192.168.70.0/24 192.168.80.0/24 192.168.90.0/24 192.168.100.0/24 192.168.110.0/24 192.168.120.0/24 ...where the C-octet reflects the VLAN-ID. Observium Alert Setup

Hi, hopying someone can help me, bought the observium, and its brilliant, just what i was looking for and even the graphs and stuff however i can’t seem to get the alerts to work correctly!? i want to monitor a device (not a port) so when it goes offline or does a reboot it will send me an email or run a custom command of my own… is the any guide to help set this up for me? or even if someone could simply tell me how to set it up sorry for being thick, but it just abit confusing to setup a simple alert on a device thats all Regards Simon

Tom, Is there a good write up on the new alerting system? I've seen various generic / site specific examples but no documentation that shows me what I can alert on and how to go about setting it up. troubleshooting sonicwall reporting failures

Hello, Im having an issue with my sonicwall firewalls. they show 15 minute blank spots in reporting. Primary and fail-over devices, at different times. nothing stands out in the logs, and no one is screaming that internet was down for 15 minutes. Upgrading to Observium Professional

Hallo, I am thinking about upgrading to Observium Professional. Before I do this however, I was wondering if someone could answer a question. At the moment I am using Observium to monitor all my Cisco switches and Windows servers. The thing I miss the most in Observium Open Source edition is not being able to receive alerts on the following: § Alerting Memory at certain thresholds (Windows machines) § alerting CPU at certain thresholds (Windows machines) § Alerting disk I/O at certain thresholds (Windows machines) Now I thing this is possible with the Professional edition. Is there a way to disable alerts for ping when snmpd isn't accessible? We get lots of false alerts when servers are under high load. We basically just want to be notified if a host is actually down (not pinging) and not when snmpd chokes out. Thanks! Disk i/o statistics

Hi all, We are currently moving our observium server from an old community edition (0.13.10.4585) to a new powerful server running Professional edition (0.14.4.5391). On the new one, all disk i/o statistics for server devices don't appear in the web interface. After some research, I found that rrd files for disks i/o are not generated. Add device failing

Hi, Just tried to add a new device (r5478) but it’s failing with no feedback, even at the command line. root@OBSERVIUM:/opt/observium # php add_device.php server.name.domain Observium v0.14.5.5478 Add Device(s) Try to add server.name.domain: Trying v2c community xyz ... root@OBSERVIUM:/opt/observium# It was ok a couple of days ago and I’m not sure how to try to diagnose this further as there is no feedback either at the command line or the web interface (which just says “Trying v2c community xyx …” the same as the command line does). To rule out a duff device I removed an existing working device and tried to re-add it. Fails with the same error also and I’m unable to re-add that device. Any pointers please? Cheers! Calix E7-2 port disabling

I have 14 Calix E7-2 OLTs in this environment that I want to monitor. The first two I added to Observium(PE 5447) showed up with over 1000 ports each. I'd like to disable polling/alerting on all but a handful of ports on each of these devices. I used the "All" button on the device's Ports tab to get this done, but it only disables the first 333 ports. Same behavior on the second OLT. The remaining 900+ ports are all still enabled for polling. Manually selecting the slider for 50 or so of the remaining ports to disable them fails to take effect after clicking "Save". Is there a way to disable the remaining ports, then enable the few that I am interested in? Thanks Doug

dpkg agent oddness

Hi All, I’ve just added the dpkg agent script for the agent to a server, it already had other agents on it which are all working OK (apache, ntp etc.). Now, when I ./dpkg locally it gives the package list just fine. However, Observium shows the package list with some extra items at the top which read <blank> and “Fatal error:” [cid:image001.png@01CF6C41.93B4FDE0] Now on every poll (manual or scheduled) I also get the event log entry “System Arch -> Directive” [cid:image002.png@01CF6C41.F2135120] This dpkg script is working fine on all the other hosts I run it on, and everything else is working fine on this particular host apart from this element of the dpkg script. If I run the agent module in debug then I notice that at the end of the script I get: Fatal error: Directive 'allow_call_time_pass_reference' is no longer available in PHP in Unknown on line 0 Fatal error: Directive 'allow_call_time_pass_reference' is no longer available in PHP in Unknown on line 0 ) So I guess this is what is being interpreted by the poller as a ‘package’ and the ‘architecture’ of the system. However, I do not get this error when I run it locally, only when it’s run from Observium remotely. So - Any ideas or suggestions what to try next? Target host is Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (3.13.0-24-generic x86_64) and I have several others running 14.04 which are polling fine as far as I’m aware. Cheers! Relative times not showing properly...

I'm actually not certain when this started to happen as I've noticed it before, but it seemed like it was just in old events, but now, I've noticed that all relative times are getting computed incorrectly, they'll all show like "364 days, 17h 13m 3s" when you hover for an actual time (system event log particularly) the timestamps are right...it's something going wonk doing date math I'm guessing... 0.14.5.5458 - php 5.4.4 (just svn updated to make sure it wasn't fixed) not sure what else is relevant... -- "Genius might be described as a supreme capacity for getting its possessors into trouble of all kinds." -- Samuel Butler

Observium already grabs details about the space, so I'd like to also add support to disk status/diagnostics (I already have the needed MIB files). L2tp not creating interfaces

Hi folks, wonderful product :):) I was just wondering if the L2tp section is in dev or is completed. I can't get it to work and as far as I have troubleshooted I can see that there are not any ports being picked up when my lns is scanned for this functionality to work. I haven't configured anything specific, it appears as you just snmp scan the device and it should pick the session tracking up for the l2tp tab. Via a sensor seams somewhat wrong for me, because I do not get any voltage or similar readings, only presence and status info. What I like to do us to monitor power supplies for presence and failure especially of Brocade MLXe and ICX devices. I run ./discovery.php -h none after the update. Second - All my servers show show me the services are down...how I configure this feature?? All servers i have, the ssh and http services are running. Lost APC Outlet Graphs

I can't pinpoint exactly when it happened but I just noticed this after I updated to the latest subscriber version. I use APC PDUs which allows per outlet SNMP monitoring. Graphing of each outlet was working previously but it is no longer there. The device information is correct: APC Web/SNMP Management Card (MB:v3.8.6 PF:v5.1.4 PN:apc_hw05_aos_514.bin AF1:v5.1.2 AN1:apc_hw05_rpdu2g_512.bin MN:AP8681 HR:02 SN: ZA1248014109 MD:11/23/2012) RRDs of each outlet still exist in the RRD directory: sensor-power-apc-rPDU2OutletMeteredStatusPower.6.rrd sensor-power-apc-rPDU2OutletMeteredStatusPower.7.rrd sensor-power-apc-rPDU2OutletMeteredStatusPower.8.rrd sensor-power-apc-rPDU2OutletMeteredStatusPower.9.rrd But none of the graphs are present Voltage, Current, and Power graphs for each phase are still properly being graphed. Any help?

Strange temperature and voltage readings

Hi Guys, First time posting - Be gentle ;) I've recently implemented Observium for our department and am absolutely loving it. However after an update this morning I have noticed that some devices are reporting weird readings for their sensors. Temperature and voltage specifically are reporting absurd variables (2209 degrees CPU temp / 1.45KV on a 1.2V rail). http://i.imgur.com/MG5NBA8.png - Random sample of temperature http://i.imgur.com/u8Emr3J.png - Random sample of voltage This issue seems to affect CISCO hardware but does not seem to be specific to a particular model or software revision and has only occurred since the DB Schema was updated this morning. I have configured a test drac, snmptrapd, and snmptt. I can see in /var/log/messages that the test message from the drac is reaching the server, but I don't see it showing up in observium. BGP update count missing

2 things with alerting

Hi, We have 2 strange things with the alerting system since a few days. - 1. The frontpage displays ports up/down, even when the alerting for that port is disabled in the device settings. Is this normal? Because this wasn't till a few days ago. [cid:image001.png@01CF5ED2.3C5BB560] [cid:image002.png@01CF5ED2.3C5BB560] - 2. Some alert checks worked fine for months, but now they fail. (I only have the database output, because the http://observium/alert_checks/ links returns a blank page, maybe because the result is too big?): [cid:image003.png@01CF5ED2.7A406F60] I attached the debug poll of one of the devices. The polling debug output returns: Checking alert 4 associated by 4 replaced @sensor_limit with 5.92 from entity. Testing: sensor_value greater 5.92 (value: 5.187) FAIL replaced @sensor_limit_low with 4.37 from entity. Testing: sensor_value less 4.37 (value: 5.187) OK Checks failed. Generate alert. What I expect (and what it did for the last months) this alert rule to do, is to fail when the sensor value is not between the threshold ranges.
