Quick question... We are a small WISP and I am trying to add all the WAPs to the map... if I do something like this: $config['location_map']['VIE Office'] = "35.476475, -80.992856"; It looks perfect on the map, however under the location menu of course it shows these coordinates as well... Is there anyway to get the SysLocation to show in the location field, but the map display correctly? Or is this a pipe dream. ~JV

Getting billing data out of Observium via SQL

I'm looking to get the billing data out of observium for monthly executive reviews. For some reason the CIO wants it in Excel (boo.) What I'm interested in mostly are the Avg in, Avg out, 95th in and 95th out for each billed circuit on a monthly basis. Fortinet Support

I wanted to start by saying Observium is so awesome! I wish I would of found it sooner! So I'm trying to add my Fortinet firewalls to Observium. I see that I can add specific MIBs for Fortigates, but I didn't see the latest D series on the list. I'm not exactly sure how to add the Fortigates. I'm unable to create a DNS entry for the firewall, and I know it's dependent on DNS. I'm very new and not exactly sure how to go about this addon. Can anybody shed some light and point me in the right direction. Also, I read that if a custom MIB wasn't written for the device that one can donate. How do I go about doing that? I would love to see the latest Fortinets(and older of course) in Observium. Cheers,

New user - network topo map question

New observium user with question on topology map. Under device>ports>map .... I have one device with 5 ports pointing to their respective far end ports. Three arrows are gray (gig-eth), one arrow is blue (gig-eth) and one arrow is red (tengig-eth). What is the difference between a gray arrow, blue arrow and red arrow? lcjones

device_ucd_load Graphs

Hi, Hoping someone can help. Since upgrading to the latest version using the SVN the device_ucd_load graphs have stopped generating and are no longer displayed within Observium. We use an external website and link to these graphs so our clients can view the server load and it'd be handy to get them working again. Were they disabled/removed in the latest version? Is there any way to get them back? Thanks

FreeBSD Instalation

How, everyone. I'd like to know if someone there has Observium installed in a FreeBSD server. I have one Observium installed in a FreeBSD server, and other installed in a Ubuntu Server. The Ubuntu one works perfectly, but in my FreeBSD, there is no that Health tab, that shows me Processors information, Mempool information, Power information. That velocimeter icon,([image: Inline image 1]), doesn't shows up for me, I don't know if it can be some mib missing, but I don~t think so, cause I already installed net-snmp, I configured snmp.conf with snmpconf -i and etc... I don't know what else to do. Do someone there has a recipe, to make Observium works properly on FreeBSD? Graphing used RAM from free command

When looking at RAM usage, the number I've always cared the most about is the number from the "used" column and "-/+ buffers/cache" row when I run the "free" command. Like: # free total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 16389700 15802892 586808 0 622824 3345472 -/+ buffers/cache: 11834596 4555104 Swap: 4089852 51536 4038316 I don't see any graph that looks like it contains that information. I see the memory pool graph, but it show much higher usage that I actually have because of how Linux manages RAM. So, any thoughts on how I could get Observium to graph what I want? Thanks! Smokeping tab gone on holiday

Hi – our Smokeping tab has vanished mysteriously. Not sure exactly when but definitely within the last week. The setting is still there: $config['smokeping']['dir'] = "/var/lib/smokeping/"; Plus the script which auto-generates the Targets file with the correct formatting is still there also and running ok (extract below): echo "*** Targets ***\n\nprobe = FPing\n\nmenu = Top\ntitle = Network Latency Grapher\nremark = Welcome to SmokePing\n\n"; $query = mysql_query("SELECT hostname FROM `devices` WHERE `ignore`=0 AND `disabled`=0 ORDER BY hostname"); while ($data = mysql_fetch_array($query)) { $hostid = str_replace(".","_",$data['hostname']); $hostname = $data['hostname']; echo "+ $hostid\n\nhost = $hostname\n\n"; } Making hosts that look like: + sw-msl-pab-52_mastv_local host = sw-msl-pab-52.mastv.local So the targets file itself looks good and the Smokeping site is running fine if you browse it directly. It’s gone for all hosts as far as I can tell? I have no idea how to debug it as it’s not a poller / discovery thing, so any pointers as to what might be broken please? Billing Module and Bill Date

I had a question on how the Bill Date is implemented. Currently we have it set to 1 as our normal billing cycle is the 1st through last day of the month. However the process of getting the API data from Observium and getting that data into our Billing system is a manual process. The API data I'm getting is from the 'type=list' format which doesn't appear to accept start and end dates. I'd like to use this API call simply because it has the billing value of 95th already calculated per bill. My question is if our billing system makes that API call on April 3rd, what data does it get? Prevent creation of RRD files on ignored/disabled ports

I'm running Observium on a fairly large network with a few Cisco 7200's running 1000+ subinterfaces and 1000+ virtual-access interfaces. These interfaces are ignored with the "bad_if_regexp" configuration variable in config.php but RRD files are still generated and the "device total traffic" graph takes ages to generate which is not optimal. The RRD files are using lot's of diskspace and we're really only interested in uplinks instead of customer interfaces. Is there a way to prevent interfaces in the bad_if or bad_if_regexp to be polled altogether without writing RRD files? Kind regards, Remco Bressers Signet B.V.

traffic 0bps / 0pps

Hi, I'm running Observium 0.14.3.5094 on Debian 7, followed the installation guide. The problem is that the traffic, displayed under the ports overview, is 0bps / 0pps. When hovering over that port, or clicking on it, the graphs do display the traffic correctly. Some devices their ports do display the traffic number as well, but the majority doesn't. I can't figure out why the traffic on some ports is displayed correct, while it's not on all the others. I don't think it's not a problem on the devices being polled, because I'm running 2 observium versions for testing purposes (0.13.10.4585 & 0.14.3.5094), and on v13 the traffic for device X is displayed correctly, while on v14 the traffic for that device is 0bps/0pps on all ports (graphs work fine). And the other way around for device Y. These are Cisco and Juniper devices being polled. All the graphs work fine. I have attached these screenshots to clarify what I mean: The port graphs:

Host down and up every 5 min.

Good morning, I have a problem I can not solve. I have two installations of observium, CE and SUBSCRIPTION, on 2 different servers. My hosts are all down , 5 minutes after up. In both servers. When I go to check, no host had fallen, and neither appears in the logs instability. I installed another server, running only the SNMP and a dedicated link, and even then it falls and rises in 5 minutes. What can it be? All three devices are dedicated to Observium, 1 physical machine, and another virtual. The client host only with SNMP are physical. All in 3 diferents Datacenter. smokeping graphs in observium (loss of information)

Hello, I have a quick question about Smokeping integration with Observium. It's working but the graphs are displayed with less information. Is it possible for Observium to display the graphs in the same fashion as native Smokeping? For example, smoke goes "up" from the baseline, packet loss displayed in a different color according to percent loss. Polling Taking Longer than 5 minutes for a few devices

I have a few devices that take longer than 5 minutes to poll. Looking at the polling information Observium provides it reports 999.99s for two of the three and the third one reports 975.37s under Last Polled. I believe the result of taking to long o poll is the breaks I see in my graphs for only these three devices. These boxes have about 150 vlan interfaces and are fully populated 6509s. I have adjusted the poller-wrapper.py to 10 and $config['snmp']['max-rep'] = 10 right now. A 4 processor VM averages about 60 cpu utilization constantly. The Server's Disk IO Ops/sec average is about 110. Today I only have 52 out of 1300 devices loaded into it. Any suggestions to speed up the polling on these few boxes or is the only solution add another polling server and do odd even or something of that nature. Maybe there is another issue I'm not seeing? I have transit, customer, and core traffic interfaces descriptions setup and working. No peering interfaces have been defined. Peering interfaces menu items are disabled with $config['int_peering'] = 0; However, when overall_traffic is added to the $config['frontpage']['order'] array, "Overall Peering Traffic Today" and "Overall Transit & Peering Traffic This Month" headers are displayed with broken image placeholders that link back to the url/iftype/type=peering/ and url/iftype/type=peering%2Ctransit/ respectively. Not a big issue, but from a consistency standpoint, it would make sense to disable the overall peering traffic views if $config['int_peering'] = 0; is set. Matt

mysqld.sock error?

I have been recently seeing this error pop up, whenever trying to login to my observium instance, and was wondering if anyone had experienced this before. This is an install I did back around October of 2013 and other then expanding the hdd, a month or so ago, I havent really messed with the settings (the first time i saw this was about a week and a half ago or so). After searching on google a little bit, it seems like the socket trying to be leveraged is at location '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' yet when i do a search for '-type s', i only see '/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock'. The '/etc/mysql/my.cnf' file already lists "socket = /var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock" though. Should I just modify the my.cnf file to include '/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock'? This is the error I get: MySQL Error: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (111)

Problem: I have a Cisco Switch that is not showing the MAC addresses in Observium. I have configured SNMP as according to the IPV4 instructions on the main observium website. My other Cisco devices are showing MAC address information fine. I can do a show mac address-table and everything appears when SSH into the switch. Can someone please advise what I am missing or how to get observium to start showing the MAC addresses of this device? Observium as inventory mgmt?

Hello all, I've been playing around for the last week and want to say really nice work thus far. But I was wondering if anyone is using this as an inventory system that would be comparable to racktables? Basically allow the user to create a table with software versions acquired through the Unix agent module (not the rpm plugin as this ignores tar installs). From everything I've seen so far it looks like this is more focused on adding custom graphs and not simple text. Help - Syslog-NG

Hi all, I have an observium system running quite happily. I've tried to integrate the syslogging functionality but getting strange results. Not sure whether the problem lies with syslog-ng, PHP or the sucking of data into Observium. Let me explain: With syslog-ng started in foreground mode 'syslog-ng -Fevd' everything works as expected. I see syslog packets coming in via tcpdump, I see the log flash up on the terminal and it correctly routes into the right part of the Observium front end. With syslog-ng started as a daemon (the desired config setup), nothing gets to Observium. I can still see the syslog packets in tcpdump obviously but I'm blind as to what happens to the messages after that. One thing I have noticed is that when running syslog-ng in foreground mode, I see "Starting destination program; cmdline='/opt/observium/syslog.php'" in the startup messages and a corresponding process in the ps -lax output "php /opt/observium/syslog.php" With syslog-ng started as a daemon, I do not see this php process. Bit stuck as to where to look next. Has anyone seen this behavior before? Centos6.5 and standard packages and configs. How to disable the "Overall Peering" graph?

Vyatta snmpd errors in ports module

However, to stand a hope of getting it sorted I wondered if anyone could suggest what part of the ‘ports’ module could possibly cause an error like this in the snmpd of the Vyatta? Then I can try to take it up on the Vyatta forums, but at the moment I can’t even explain which I’m trying to poll when the error occurs because I don’t know what steps in the ports module are likely to cause this. Is there any way to get the current noise in the event logs from mempool away? Basically every time discovery is run/rerun I get spurious "updated" events for everything. I would like to know if there is an option to turn on optical diagnostic information for Juniper network devices as the current graphs do not show this. When I tried this last (a year ago, ex4500) the data was not available via SNMP without extra scripts installed on the device. This may have been a limitation of my using SFP and not SFP+ on the device however. --Chris

Memory usage on ASR9k

Hi, This might be my lack of understanding of the memory pools' representations in Observium, or it might be a bug. There seems to be a significant difference in the memory being reported by Observium and that which is reported by the device. Here is the console output for the two processors (SP and RSP) along with the graph values from Observium: #sh mem sum location 0/0/CPU0 Physical Memory: 8192M total Application Memory : 8004M (5264M available) <- approx. 34% used Image: 59M (bootram: 59M) Reserved: 128M, IOMem: 0, flashfsys: 0 Total shared window: 347M #sh mem sum location 0/RSP0/CPU0 Physical Memory: 8192M total (4688M available) <- approx. 41% used Application Memory : 8002M (4688M available) Image: 61M (bootram: 61M) Reserved: 128M, IOMem: 0, flashfsys: 0 Total shared window: 133M The "Reserved" and "Image" ones are always 100% - but that's a different issue I think. What I'm more interested in is the RSP and SP "Processor" element, which both show very different amounts to the real usage. In fact, I can't even remotely line them up with anything on the box itself. So, any ideas or am I just reading this all wrong? Cheers! Hi! there is some form to create some alert using a specifc SNMP oid? Weirdness with a site with 32-bit ports

I am going through the sites and I noticed that on the overview page that nothing is showing in the traffic graph for one of our sites. But when I look at the ports themselves, they are showing traffic: Then when I go into port config, I see this: It looks like it stopped showing traffic on the 5th or 6th. Any ideas? IPMI values from server running VMWare

Until recently I've been able to retrieve values using IPMI on my servers running ESXi. This option now seems to have been removed? It's still available for my servers running Linux but not ESXi. Any specific reason for this? Is it something I can turn back on again? I'm thinking it's a "hardware" thing and not dependant on the OS it's running. Regards, Nic

The main graph on the home page works but when I click the link, I get Total Graph for ports of type : Transit None found. Same with Peering. I have the text 'transit' and/or 'peering' in the description for the ports. It appears to be sort of working. just would like that drill down to work. MRV LX console servers

Hello list, I have a couple of MRV LX4000 console servers that I added to Observium. I do not care much about port utilisation but it is nice to know if one drops off the radar and get an alert. However, the boxes are not recognised by Observium and get this ugly question mark icon in the device list. A quick Google did not reveal anything related to these boxes and Observium, did anyone play around with adding these devices and get them recognised properly? They basically run a BusyBox Linux... strange numbers from nortel switch

Hi I'm trying to setup Observium to poll all of our switches, and so far I just love it. Great job guys! I hope to convince the management to subscribe soon, but for now we'll have to do with the community version. Let me try to explain my issue. I am polling a dual stack of Nortel Baystack 5510-24T switches using snmp v2c. All ports of unit 1 and ports 1 - 6 of unit 2 look fine. The graphics (bits/sec) for port 7 to 24 of unit 2 are strange though. Port 7 is not used, no device is connected to it at all. The average traffic according to the graphs is around 30Gbit/s. All other ports after port 7 show the exact same numbers. So first I tried to reset all port statistics on the switch. The graphs showed 0 bits/s for a few minutes, but then after let's say 30 minutes it shows a current bandwidth of 8Gbit/s. I tried deleting the device from Observium and added it again, but it seems that all counters are still there. When I look at the port using telnet, all counters are 0. I know that this switch is not in the supported devices list, but as far as I know the default snmp pollings should provide correct numbers for bandwidth statistics, no? Adding Bind9 stats into Observium for trending/graphing?

Hello, I do not see a away to search the mailing list so please excuse me if this question has been asked before. I've recently (as in the last 3 or 4 days) began configuring Observium for the purpose of getting some good trending data out of my bind servers. I noticed in the demo, there is an APP drop down, and BIND is listed as one of the supported applications. I am having a difficult time figuring out how to get Observium to monitor my bind servers however. I do get LOTS of great throughput data and cpu usage so that will be very helpful. I have installed the bind9-snmp setup from bayour.com and am abe to read bind statistics using SNMP, but I have no idea how to get these values to be polled and graphed by Observium. If setting up the bind9-stats through SNMP is not the proper way to graph the bind stats, can someone please point me in the right direction? Thanks, Ricardo Meleschi

Need help getting the new alert system to send mail

efficiency in SNMP-requests

Hey everyone, first of all I want to tell you, that I really like observium. It's a great tool and I really enjoy using it. There is one disadvantage, that a colleague of mine from our networking department told me. We get log-Entries in our firewall for each SNMP-request. Would it be possible to do a single SNMP request to get all Data? Is there a config setting? Or is it planned to do this? It would really help, because I had to adjust the interval to a longer time as a first measure. LDAP Auth not able to use level 10

Hi, I've set up the ldap authentication with AD. The LDAP binding , Search and Authentication is all succesfull. even the group matching is perfect. But I'm not able to provide the group a level 10 authentication. When authenticating the user in the correct group can't see any device. Greetings.

Disable BGP Alerts/Polling for Single Router

Hoping someone could point me in the right direction. Is there anyway to disable BGP alerts/polling for single router? I see this similar to port disabled from Observiums perspective. Hello, I have an acme packet net-net 4000. In the version 0.14.2.5010 our acme packet device is coming up as a generic device. Was this device included in the support for Acme Packets or do I need to update something on our acme packet device? Adding MIBs

We have several SonicWALL firewalls that are SNMP capable but do not work when you try to add them via ./add_device.php. Since I was able to add our 2400 series SonicWALLs to Observium I just assume there is a file missing somewhere. Unable to add standby Cisco ASA

Hi, I'm trying to add the standby Cisco ASA firewalls we have in our active/standby failover pairs. I am able to add our ASA-SM (ASA service modules), but not the "normal" ASA's or PIX firewalls. Unfortunately, a Cisco ASA failover pair shares the same "sysName" and "snmpEngineID". This is not configurable on the ASA firewalls. When I try to add a standby ASA (with a different hostname / IP address) I get the following error: Already got device with SNMP-read sysName (xxxxxxxxxxx) and 'snmpEngineID' = xxxxxxxxxxx (xxxxxxxxxxx). I see that this is because of a check in "functions.php". Is there any workaround you can think of to allow us to add the standby devices? It is essential for us to monitor them, and we were also hoping to use Observium as our hardware inventory database (which is now missing all standby ASA's). Regards, Erik

APC InRow Cooling support

I would like to graph the air temp and air flow in these in row cooling units. I see some APC ups support but not these units. Any pointers on how I would go about it? CentOS authentication timeout

Hello, I started to have an intermittent issue with users being forced to login when they browse the webpage. I have the timeout settings defined in php.ini: session.use_cookies = 1 session.use_only_cookies = 1 session.cookie_lifetime = 259200 session.cookie_path = / session.cookie_domain = session.cookie_httponly = Socket timeouts are set to the following in php.ini: default_socket_timeout = 259200 I did have a lifetime cookie set to 0 and socket_timeout to 14400. Users that had the issue had a cookie. My authentication mechanism is AD-LDAP. Any other advice on where to look to find out why users are being forced to login intermittently? I have had a hard time tracking this issue down since it is so intermittent. Thanks, Mike

Persistence of data in Observium

Hello, Recently our network team upgraded one of our devices. Upon doing so some of the ifIndexes changed on the device. So we lost some history on some of the ports where the ifindex changed. Another situation, we use the port description mapping for tracking transit, peering, core ports. We moved a peer from one switch to another in one of our ports to upgrade the capacity. When we did that we lost the history in the aggregate graph because the old port doesn't have the port description anymore denoting it is a peer. Any tips on how to keep history on ports in those situations? I was thinking of outputting the data to a separate RRD or database. But, then I don't get to use the awesome observium interface to view that data. Thanks, Mike

Transit link not working

On the front page I've enabled the overall <class> traffic today. But when I click on the Transit Graph to drill down to iftype/type=transit/, I get "None Found". I have 2 ports on 2 different routers set to type Transit with the following strings in ifAlias: Router 1: <https://sd-observium01.kratos.us/device/device=1/tab=port/port=1/> GigabitEthernet0/0/0 Transit: [200Mbit] AVPN (13979) {ATT-BMEC.959625 - Vz-13.KRGN.57 Router 2: <https://sd-observium01.kratos.us/device/device=2/tab=port/port=13/> GigabitEthernet0/0/0 Transit: [200Mbit] AVPN (13979) {ATT-BKEC.946484 - Vz-46.KFGS.30 Looks like they get cut off too..
