Perf_time tables

Are the perf_times and devices_perftimes used for anything other than diagnostics at the moment? These tables are the significant majority of the data in our database. I truncated them once to free up some space. Good afternoon everyone, I'm a security administrator from a French insurance company and me and my collegues are interested in your powerful monitoring tool. I've tested it recently and was amazed by the pretty easy installation of such an intuitive software :-) I've also discovered your splitting editions and your intentions for the future and agree with that. The pricing is correct in front of all the work you (all the devs) have done. The only things I would to know to convince my chief that it's the tool we need, is : do you have a roadmap for the alerting module ? Because, if I've correctly understood, you have done a successful Kickstarter campaign to implement the alerting module, but from my last tests (one of the last free SVN edition, something like r4400) the alerting module wasn't really enabled, even after changing the config.php and setting the mailing alerts (with the right SMTP relay, recipient, etc...). Another question is, when (or how if I've done it wrong ...) do you plan to enable mail alerts for hosts down ? I didn't search in all your archives (only the last months) but I'm sorry if the questions was already asked ... and I'm sorry for my rough English ... Our issue is that we would like to collect the stats as close to the devices as possible and then transport them over to the central server where we can view them all. Hi Guys, As we talked about in April, to sustain development we need to develop a revenue stream. The temporary solution in April was the Kickstarter, which funded 6 months of development for the alerting system. To fund development after that, we've decided to try a relatively inexpensive subscription scheme. http://www.observium.org/Edition_Split The intention is to provide enough for free to keep the people who wouldn't ever pay happy, and try to keep the price low enough that everyone else can pay without worrying too much about it. We've set the subscription at £100/year. If you were a Kickstarter supporter, you'll get a free subscription for a while, because we're nice like that. Comments? :) adam.

Memory Usage: what is there displayed?

Hi all, i have a little problem with the Memory-Usage-Graph. I hope it wasn't discussed already: What is displayed there? :-) It says: "Used: -2.0GB" As you can see in the attached memory_usage.png X-AS01:/etc/pam.d # free -h total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 4,9G 4,6G 292M 0B 68M 4,1G -/+ buffers/cache: 399M 4,5G Swap: 743M 115M 628M I guess observium is a bit confused because i have a ramdisk? tmpfs on /mnt/ramdisk type tmpfs (rw,relatime,size=4194304k) Is this a observium-Problem or is it a misconfigured by myself? Port groups under device

Hi, i wonder if its possible to group port types (eg. all 10GigE) of a specific device. We have some core switches that have lots of modules with a huge amount of ports. If I click to see the graphs of that device it takes way to long while it loads all of the ports of that device. Like: switch1 ------> Module 1 ------> Module 2 ------> PortChannels ------> TenGig ------> VLANs switch2 etc. It would be much faster/easier to go directly to the desired module/port group. Monitoring an NFS share?

We have our backup storage mounted as an NFS share on our devices. We want to monitor each of these shares individually from the servers themselves (Not from the backup server, as that machine is not under our control). I am loving Observium so far but cannot figure out how we can accomplish this task. Disk monitoring is already in place so this doesn't seem like too much of a reach as the mounted share shows up in df -h output. Any tips would be appreciated.

+1 hack in all of switchmap.pl so I can take it out of cron :-) --- am just curious, is it possible to get the ARP / NDP Table to show the IP addresses associated with the ports instead of just the VLAN ID? Is this possible to configure, or just not with what info the Cisco switches are providing? Sorry if this is explained somewhere, just didn't seem to find anything related to this.

Hi, after som updates (now on the latest public SVN) I have lost temperatures on my SuperMicro boxes. And on some the storage as well. Hi, I understand the change. And personally I think the price is oke, but I don't hope it will sky-rocket in the near feature. For us the MOST important thing is the Alerting (eg. IF up/down) part. But right now it's very limited and not working very well for us. Make it more less-complicated would be nice :-D When we can use it as reliable monitoring platform too, we are in! One other part: also support RHEL/CENTOS. It's an widely used enterprise OS and can't be ignored imho. - Gerwin

Bug in SLA addition?

Putting together a test box on CentOS 6.4 today to get a feel for it. If it works for us (though there are some hurdles), we'll look at it as a long term replacement to our largely homegrown MRTG installation. One of the many things I was happy to find that Observium is doing out of the box is Cisco IP SLA graphing. However, I'm running into an issue. The rrds are not being created and the graphs are empty. Running observium on multiple hosts

I'm looking for some feedback/ideas on how others may have implemented Observium in a multi-site capacity. We are currently using MRTG to provide our data collection and graphing. While Observium isn't a perfect replacement for us, it goes a long way towards replacing much of what MRTG does. Our current setup involves a large university campus. We have core, distribution, and access layers, and at the distribution layers we've implemented monitoring systems for packet capture and (you guessed it) MRTG. This allows for: - Data collection to continue even if a distribution layer site is isolated from the core - Prevents data collection bandwidth from impacting the core Our MRTG data presentation is largely homegrown, and how we go about it isn't important. What I'm looking for are suggestions on how one might take a multi-server setup and allow someone to search or navigate to a given building or switch without having to guess as to which distribution site it's out of. Ideas rattling around my head right now involve: - Coding up the search function so that it not only searches the local site, but also all of the other servers - Coming up with some static page that indicates that a given building is off of a given installation - this one I don't like so much So I'm wondering if this is something someone else has put time and effort into and has a viable solution. -- Eric Stewart - Network Administrator - eric(a)usf.edu University of South Florida, Information Technology

Device Alerts

Hi everyone, On the main front page of Observium (the Overview/dashboard), the device alerts table never seems to empty. I guess it works on a maximum number of entries scheme, new alerts are displayed at the top as they occur and old ones are dropped off the bottom. It looks like we always have problems on our NOC display. Is it possible to remove items from the list, clear them off somehow? Many thanks, James.

I'm having difficulty with 2 settings: I've added: $config['frontpage']['map']['dotsize'] = 5; This is not changing the size of the dot. I've also added: $config['title_image'] = "images/my-logo.png"; This is not changing the logo on the top left of the web interface. That page is how it is, you cant remove things from it because its showing state. Rebooted information goes away after 24 hours. Its actually showing you devices with uptime below 24 hours. Adam. separate diskio graphs for different devices

Hi all, is it possible to have a separate graph for each entity in the DiskIO? Scenario is that we try to monitor ZFS server and there are over 200 Filesystems that are shown on top of each other making the graph impossible to use. Thanks!

Graphs broken after update

Hi to all. My observium worked perfect for about a month. But yesterday i made an update (to rev. 4572): #cd /opt/observium #svn update #./discovery.php -h none After that i have next problem: - in servers overview tab all graphs ok - when i'm clicking for example on Memory Usage graph, all is ok. Adding a custom OID ?

Hello, I'm a newbie with Observium having just installed it, but now a question has popped up in my head that I could not find a clear answer to by googling. I have a couple of Linux hosts for which I also added in the net-snmpd conf a counter for the number of imapd & others processes. How could I add to a small part of the existing graphed servers, this OID ? (or where should I look in the conf ?) I was thinking maybe defining a new template (if this is the working principle) and adding there these OIDs also for the discovery phase. Can someone advise me at least where to start my question with ? I'm a bit confused at the moment. Thanks, Mihai

How to use removespikes.php?

Aggregate Graphing?

I was looking at the graphing off of the main page, where you select All Devices, then Bits, and had a quick question about this. I assume this is an aggregate of all interfaces being displayed. What I am curious to know is if the graphs show interfaces that are "technically" duplicates? For example, a straight interface on a juniper device can be ge-1/0/0, but because there is a unit attached to the interface, sort of like a sub-interface, ge-1/0/0.0 shows up as well. The problem here is, its the same statistics for both of the interfaces, in this example. So, if the aggregate graph is looking at all interfaces and includes both in the aggregate graph, well than the aggregate is not correct? Not sure if I explained it correctly, and if not, please let me know. What i am getting at is, it seems as though there is duplicate information being aggregated so the graphs is not accurate, from what it looks like. Thoughts?

Problems after sync to 4532

Sorry if this is the wrong channel to send this to. Not sure what happened, but after syncing to the latest version the web portal seems to be broken. Checking the logs the poller is still working, I just can't access the web page any more. Oh man. This is an ancient historical feature from like 2009 that I think broke in 2009 :) The enabling/disabling option is still in the config. But it won't work. Interface description, auto-add to billing?

I could have sworn I had seen something where I can enable an auto-add feature in order for ports to be automatically added, into the billing piece, with a particular pattern in the port description. Is this something that is available or will be available? i cant seem to find it again for some reason and I remember even seeing the pattern that was given, which would need to change in my particular instance. Any ideas on this one?

SQL query instead of port detail

hi. I just installed another instance ob observium. While my first one is working like a charm (installed 6 weeks ago) this one has a strange behaviour. For example: When I click on a device and then click on the showed graph I do net get the port details with more detailed RRD graph (where you can changes the range with time and date). Polling Intervals

So we're relatively new to Observium and hacking out way through getting it integrated and tested in our environment. One common thing (that we can't find in the faq's or documentation) other tools use is the ability to change polling intervals. On our edge firewall, we might want one minute queries while on SAN volumes we might want 30 minute disk checks. Is there any way to adjust that per device/device type/globally? Disable auto adding ports on Mikrotik PPPoE Server

Hi I have two Mikrotik PPPoE Servers added to Observium and it constantly adding new ports as users get connected with PPPoE ports, and then deleted as user disconnects. After some time a lot of ports appear in Deleted Port, that I need to manually delete them, and also disk space grows as new rrd's gets created. I tried adding "bad_if" in config file but without success, because this interfaces don't have description. Also is there any way to permanently delete this previously added port from database and rrd folder. Thanks, Petar Janev

macsuck CAM tables?

I would love to see a Mac Address forwarding table grab in observium for L2 devices. Maybe it's already there, but I couldn't find it. In NetDisco, this feature is implemented using the 'macsuck' tool. *http://www.netdisco.org/readme.html#glossary* I've implemented it before in sloppy perl using the Bridge mib. * http://www.cisco.com/en/US/tech/tk648/tk362/technologies_tech_note09186a008… * The gist for collection is: - determine the list of active vlans - for each vlan get a list of mac addresses per 'bridge port' - lookup a translation of bridgeport to ifindex If you correlate this data with a global ARP table and DNS, you get a killer feature. "Lookup the switch port where a given host was last seen. (and hopefully where it still is)" Because this can be a pretty dynamic dataset, you'll also probably want to maintain the list by putting a last seen datestamp and rolling out old entries. I think I've found a few hints at some development interest in the past about this sort of feature. Has it gotten any traction? Cheers, Joel

cisco chassis temperature sensors gone

Hey, I've just noticed, we have no longer have chasis temperature senors on any Cisco 3560 switches, while it still shows temperature from SFP modules. Debug discovery snmpwalk shows sensor name only, no entSensorValue. Was it polled other way before? Evenlog says its gone like months ago, on march of this year :)

Unable to override sysLocation

graphs: broken images

Hi, Firstly, the process to add graphs is a nice and simple one, so thanks for that. I'm trying to add graphs with different configurations and variable names, and I think I've gotten somewhere, however I'm getting a broken graphs image. I've checked for extra whitespace and have not found any. Neither do I end the files with "?>"; Any idea what the problem might be? Thanks, Mike Y. PHPSESSID don't set

Hi all, I install observium on debian 6. mcrypt installed. I have a problem with PHPSESSID. If I click to some link after logon, ex. all devices, I return to logon page. I try to select "Remember me", but it not help. In google chrome I see, that cookies from observium domain are not present. PHPSESSID is empty. Please advice, how I can solve this problem. I have a cisco router terminating a QinQ trunk on a GigabitEth port, the 2 tags are actually 802.1AD "translated" to cisco `ISL', and I would like to track the bit/s t/p on each (outer) S-TAG. There's no interface that corresponds to the S-TAG only; you get the entire trunk or several thousand sub-interfaces which correspond to the C-tags. The router has no trouble at all keeping a counter on the S-TAG level vlans: ROUTER#show vlans dot1q Total statistics for 802.1Q VLAN 1179: 1043211296 packets, 392860154434 bytes input 1318271657 packets, 1413383465338 bytes output Total statistics for 802.1Q VLAN 1180: 12901924856 packets, 5689677372911 bytes input 16833259171 packets, 17373955952108 bytes output So, the 1st task would be to find the MIB, if any for these "outer" tags, and attempt to write code for an add-on to discover and graph them. [observium] graphs and crontab

Sorry if this has been asked already. I have scrolled thru the posts but I haven't come across the answer to my question yet. When I run ./poller-wrapper.py manually it works fine; I get graphing data for most of my devices, and the graphs show up. But if I let cron run it, nothing shows up? What am I missing? It's a clean build of Ubuntu 12.04, and Observium 0.13.9.4471. Thanks in advance, any help is appreciated. Yes, I'm a newb. :-)

search MAC in FDB

Hi, trying to use the search option in observium. If i go to FDB Tables and pick a random MAC-Address and enter it in the searchfield there is no result. Whereas when i do this with any other search-option (ipv4;MAC Address;ARP/NDP) and enter appropriately, there is an result. Tested with 0.13.8.4262 and 0.13.7.4172. Polling missed?

Out of curiosity, where would I begin looking for any issues with missed polls or graphs not showing data for a certain period of time? I have looked under /var/log and do not see anything that stands out. I'm not sure if there are any other locations i can investigate this on. I am running ubuntu server 12.04.3 LTS. Attached are a couple of graphs you can see the gap of data not presented, or possibly missing? The weird part is, i have about 90% of my devices that show this gap, but the other 10% doesnt. Theres no specific network device/factor that would be have created this either. Any thoughts/suggestions/ideas?

Windows server issue with disk space

Hi. I found Observium after reading a post on Reddit (if you're out there, whoever made the post, you have my eternal thanks!), and I've got it setup and running pretty much OK, but I've run into an issue with one specific Windows host. Observium accesses and sets it up OK except for one disk volume - the drive is approximately 15 Tb in size, but Observium is only reporting it as being 8Tb, and I can't figure out why. Can anyone suggest what I may have configured incorrectly? I initially used SNMP V1 to discover/configure this host - could that be the issue, perhaps? Thanks for any input, and a huge thanks to the guys (and gals?) who write this stuff, so that those of us who can't code our way out of a wet paper bag can still satisify the demands of manglement! "No devices found" shown on Devices pages

Many of the pages beneath the "Devices" menu incorrectly display "No devices found". For example, choosing "All Devices" lists two devices, but clicking any of the controls in the '<div class="well">' segment - even the "Detail" button which is active by default - no longer shows the two devices but again reverts to "No devices found". Further down the "Devices" menu, "Servers (2)" is shown, but choosing this also displays "No devices found". Other menus, such as "Ports", appear to display all of their data correctly. This occurs with both SVN-3763 and the latest SVN-4451. When I spoke to another Observium user, they had the same issue, but no solution. Has anyone else seen this problem, or can anyone suggest anything I might do to resolve the issue? Many thanks, Stuart

Automated CSV/XCL/etc Traffic Billing Report?

I was looking at the Traffic Billing piece and was curious to know if there is a way to setup an automated monthly report for each individual "customer" that is listed under that area? I dont seem to find anything at the moment. Would be cool to automate that and shoot out the raw data, in addition to the graphs for each individual "customer" on a monthly basis to whatever email address(s) specified. Would that ever be a feature or does anyone know how it could be accomplished?

Hi, thanks for the development of observium! I want to use Observium to calculate the traffic of my clients. Now I have the following problem: Under "used" always "0B" is displayed. The same goes for "Over Usage" where only "-" is displayed. In the bar where the traffic usage should be displayed in percent is nothing. In the observium main directory I have found the file poll- billing.php I run it, but unfortunately nothing has happened here. I would be very grateful for a little assistance. is_file() usage for rrd file existance

Gday folks. I'm fiddling around with remote RRD storage via rrdcached. Most of the rrdtool stuff is wrapped in includes/rrdtool.inc.php which is wonderful from this perspective. Not within this include is the usage of is_file() to determine the existence of an rrd file. In discovery the pattern is something like If( ! is_file( some.rrd ) ) { rrdtool_create ( … )} In graphing the pattern is something like If ( is_file( some.rrd ) { graph some stuff… } Would there be any support for moving this usage into a rrdtool_file_exists( ) thin wrapper for is_file ? This would make it much easier to extended includes/rrdtool.inc.php to support storage of RRD's on remote storage (and potentially distribute over multiple remote storage devices ..) Thoughts? I had a quick check for usage of scandir/readdir to determine all the rrd's in a 'device' directory, but this doesn't seem to be a common pattern. My other evil thought is to use rename_function/override_function to work around this, but it seems very very WRONG. Cheers, Peter

Hi All I have a new HP Procurve 3800 switch stack which is recognized as "generic device" only. The device information show as: "HP Stack, revision KA.15.09.0009, ROM KA.15.06 (/ws/swbuildm/KA_rel_hartford_qaoff/code/build/tam(KA_rel_hartford_qaoff )) (Formerly ProCurve)" Does anyone have an idea how I could fix this? Dbm sensors and interface names

Hi, I'm watching the dBm sensors on a Brocade host, and I notice that on /health/metric=dbm/ and /device/device=X/tab=health/metric=dbm/ there is no sign of the port related to the values being displayed. observium Syslog not recieving syslog msgs

Hi, I have been unable to get the syslog function to work and I can't find any info online that is helping I am just getting the follwoing msg on the webpage No syslog entries found! This device does not have any syslog entries. Check that the syslog daemon and Observium configuration options are set correctly, that this device is configured to send syslog to Observium and that there are no firewalls blocking the messages. Hi! After updating a week or two ago (after the security update), I installed php-mcrypt on my CentOS node. I also (for good measure, added the disable command (below) in the config.php. Restarted Apache, cleared cache, used multiple browsers, etc ... I still get the following notice/warning at the top of the screen when I log in. Observium now requires mcrypt to be installed for use by the "remember me" function. Please install the php5-mcrypt package on Ubuntu/Debian or the php-mcrypt package on RHEL/Centos. Alternatively, you can disable this feature by setting $config['login_remember_me'] = FALSE; in your config. * * Am I missing something? I just need to have it effectively disabled. I am looking to spice up my frontpage and am currently adding the minigraphs. Is there a way in the config to name each graph as opposed to a custom name for the field? Am I reading this correctly... defaults.inc.php:$config['rrd_rra'] = " RRA:AVERAGE:0.5:1:2016 RRA:AVERAGE:0.5:6:2976 RRA:AVERAGE:0.5:24:1440 RRA:AVERAGE:0.5:288:1440 "; So for a step of '300' (5 mins) we have 1 PDP @ 300seconds = 5 mins (x 2016) = 7 days of 5 minute intervals 6 PDPs @ 300seconds = 30mins (x 2976) = 62 days? 2 months? (of 30min averages) 24 PDPs @ 300seconds = 2 hour (x 1440) = 120 days (of 2 hour averages) 288 PDPs @ 300 seconds = 24 hours (x 1440) = 4 years? (of 1 day averages..) Cheers, Peter
