Basic Installation Issue.

Hi All, I am having a very basic installation issue, however not being a major linux user I cannot seem to find a sensible answer online. I have a clean install of Ubuntu 12.04LTS and all the associated packages installed as per the instructions at observium.org however when I try to check out the latest version using SVN I am getting the following error : root@CAL-MGT-MON:/home/nelsons# svn co http://www.observium.org/svn/observer/trunk observium svn: OPTIONS of 'http://www.observium.org/svn/observer/trunk': Could not read status line: connection was closed by server (http://www.observium.org) I have tried using HTTPS as a protocol but it seems the server is not listening on 443. Any help would be good. RANCID integration

Hi, I am trying to integrate RANCID for Observium, however the basic installation of rancid on Ubuntu 12.04 eludes me. Most tuts out there are for 11.04, or are quite dated. Sensors & syslog Questions

Hi, I have been trying observium for the last few weeks and am happy with it. However, I couldn't get the sensors (temperature & voltage) and syslog to work. It doesn't even show up in the health drop down menu!. Does observium obtain the sensors data using lm-sensors or ipmi? And is there any other configurations steps to be done (other than in the wiki or documentation)?. Regarding syslog, I tried rsyslog and syslog-ng and followed the solutions posted in wiki & mailing list for similar issues but no luck!, the tab still says that no syslog entries found although its enabled and running (Note: I am using CentOS & RHEL). Axis labeling for graphs

Hi... Maybe this is a novice question. I do have observium set up for a few days now and works quite well. Thanks to all involved. But there is one thing I do miss. Is it possible to label the axis for graphs? eg. the Diskusage graph. The x axis is the timeline (which is easy to detect) but the y axis is percentage of usage. But it would be way clearer if you would add label to the x and y axis to clearly know in which unit is measured here. Especially when you hop between graphs. If Observium thinks a device is down it's either because it can't ping it, or it doesn't get an SNMP response from it. Check you can snmpwalk the device from the Observium server. It's always the firewall, or the acls. Adam. device down

So, I have to say that after reinstalling Observium, but keeping my config.php intact, everything works---almost too well. I know it needs tweaking because right now, I have a message that a device is down, and I am able to log into it. Not only that, but O tells me that the box has been down for some time, yet I am able to ping from it. What kind of tweak would this need? Very Large Environment

Thanks in advance for anyone who can help. We are deploying Observium in a very large environment. We are upwards of 6,000 devices and 300,000 ports. I don't think we are going to be able to poll this in 5 minutes. This is what we have done so far: - Distributed polling - Polling - 8 VMs - 4core, 8GB RAM each - MySQL - 4 core, 8GB RAM - Web Interface - 4 core, 8GB RAM - NFS Server (for centralized /opt/observium - except for the MIBS directory, which is copied across each server) - moving to an EMC VNX in 2 weeks. - rrdcached being implemented (any assistance here is helpful) - Modified poller-wrapper.py to distribute the devices that poll within 120s across multiple instances of poller-wrapper.py running on multiple hosts. Devices that poll in more than 120s are polled on separate servers at 15 minute intervals. - poller-wrapper has been modified to allow for multiple instances just like poller.php with MODULUS distribution - Each instance of poller-wrapper.py gets an instance number and the total number of instances. - All of the devices with the last poll time < 120 seconds are MOD'ed with the device_id and the total number of instances and compared to the instance number - device_id MOD total_instances = this_instance - Tuning threads in each poller-wrapper.py - currently at 16 threads and 2 instances on each 4 vCPU server for 32 threads running at once or 8 threads per core - The DC is on the west coast and that presents latency problems. We may need to address with distributed polling - We are at 1024MB in php.ini - We are using xcache (tuning help is appreciated - or should we just turn it off)? My questions are: - How can I change the default RRD behavior to use 15 minute intervals instead of 5 minute intervals - 15 minutes x 2 weeks - 2 hours x 5 weeks - 4 hours x 12 months - We want to keep the max/min/average/87.5th percentile (since only 8 measurements per 2 hours) - I don't see the configuration items for that. - Would we be better with a few big boxes rather than small VMs?

So, I uninstalled the whole mess, reinstalled everything. ONe thing that immediately worked was the emails from observium! This time I added only one machine manually. I don't really see that I did anything different. In fact, I kept my config.php and just pasted it in after I did the install and voila! Seems to be working now. However, I would add that on the installation procedures, it should be clarified that with the mysql, the coder needs to add the passwords for the users manually. All installation problems are solved by following the install guide properly. We long ago decided that trying to diagnose what people typed wrong just isn't worth the time and just recommend that people reinstall in most cases. Memory draw error

I just did a fresh install of the newest observium (0.13.7.4200). Everything is working well except for my nexus 5k devices show a draw error for memory. Memory stats for the switches was working in previous observium releases. Here is the output from the poller below. RIB OIDs) somehow are seen by OBS only in my ASR 1ks and horde of c3750x. comparing with a handful of v6.1 Nexii 7k (and their vdc's), along with some archaic-but-still-v15 c3560s, the returned set is null. q1) need for the ugliness of snmp context mapping per vrf? q2) if so, is OBS prepared to iterate over the multiple communities per device? curious, R.

inserting default schema

Hi, I am building an Observium server on a Dell server (not a vm) and have run into the problem that when I run the command, php includes/update/update.php I get: ERROR 1045 (28000): Access denied for user observium@localhost (using passwd: YES) Now, when I select user, host from mysql.user; I DO see the observium user. No, I cannot log into the mysql with observium user, however. So, I know I'm close, but I'm not there yet, any assistance would be great. RRD Graphing problems

Hi Guys, I am having a problem displaying data in the graphs. If I select an interface that has traffic reported and drill down to the graph I see all the graph entries with -nan but if I select the RealTime graph I can see the traffic flow. There is no community indexing for the vrf MIBs as far as I have seen. It's quite common for Cisco to not bother implementing what they consider to be service provider MIBs on enterprise hardware. This is probably something you need to direct to Cisco. Note that we currently consider the vrf tracking in Observium to be broken and unusable. Adam. i'm running two php applications on a LAMP machine. one is cacti, the other is observium. i'm using name-based virtual hosting with one IP address. when i have just the cacti virtual host running, i can stay logged in to cacti forever, i.e. my session never times out. when i enable the observium virtual host, cacti prompts me for my login credentials again after 1-2 minutes. i'm using LDAP authentication for cacti and the built-in authentication for observium (user added via adduser.php). any idea why that would be?

Strange issue

Hi folks. I've been noticing a strange issue when using Observium in the last couple of days which has me scratching my head. Occasionally, when I am browsing devices, or device components, I'll get a graph or image which just comes up reading "no authorisation" or similar - and anything else I click on results in my being kicked back to the logon screen. I don't *think* it's an inactivity timeout - at the times I have noticed this happening I specifically noticed it because I was in the middle of doing something. Is there something else I could have misconfigured which would cause this behaviour? Thanks. DaZZa

Please do not post modifications to Observium files to this list. (Or write them as 'guides' on blogs). Alerting Update

Morning Observiumites and Kickstarters. We're pleased to announce that we've reached a development milestone on the road to replacing all of our hated monitoring applications. The last 2 weeks spent in Amsterdam collaborating on the alerting system have been immensely productive, thanks to the great visionaries Maarten Moerman of eBay and Job Snijders of Atrato, we would like to thank them for their continuous support, Coke Zero and Appelkoeks. The fundamental schema for the alerting system have been defined and a basic working framework written. This week will be spent further improving and bug-fixing the framework so that we can move on to writing a UI to easily change the alert rule sets and associations. Obvervium login issue

Hello, I have an issue which I have been unable to resolve in the last 5 hourse. My Obversium login simply doesn't work. Nothing happens when I login using real username / password. When I try to login with wrong user/pass it wasy login invalid, but with the real login details nothing happens, no error, just gets me to login page again. I use RHEL6 and i did everything from the guide. Tried with both Apache and nginx, same error. error_log empty. How could I debug this further? I know DB is created successfully and admin users loaded to the mysql table sucessfully. Any help wold be appreciated.

Event Logs Broken and Empty

Hi All, At some stage a wee back, a couple of months ago I think, something broke all the event log bits in Observium. I vaguely remember it breaking after one of the sql updates that took a long time to run on the eventlog table, but I'm not certain about that. Hi, I just noticed that my alert e-mails are looking funny. In r4203 the content-type of those messages was changed to text/html. Are the messages going to be HTML formatted in the near future? VPS root devices in snmpd.conf

Hi Guys, me again I've googled for this but not found anything much, and I know it's not entirely observium-related but is there any way of specifying a different root device in snmpd.conf? I have a few VPS hosted systems and the root devices are different, some are /dev/simfs, others are /dev/xvda1 etc. Obviously this just produces a broken graph in observium so I'm wondering if there is a way of setting it and then having it picked up. Oh. You were being confusing by talking about 'root device'. You mean the SNMP agent isn't reporting any file systems? Probably some permissions bullshit related to the virtualization platform. You don't need to mess with the netsnmp config at all really. Adam. Why is it wrong? That is the question. Observium gets its data from your snmp agent, I have not had it fail even in linux-vserver jails. SNMPv3-Only Discovery/Polling

Hi, I recently set up another host. This time using SNMPv3. addhost.php worked fine and both Auth and Priv passed. discovery.php can't discover the host. poller.php can't poll the host. via snmpget I get responces to sysUpTime.0 but not to .1, .0, ... The snmpd.conf should grand the user full Readonly rights as I didn't specify any SubID to the user. Is this known? Is there a way around? Is there any example of a working snmpv3-only setup? Collectd minigraphs on front page

Hello We make fairly heavy use of the collectd capabilities of Observium. It really is a great feature for us. I have been investigating adding mini graphs to the front page. The guide helped me add graphs from SNMP-gathered data, but I was unable to add graphs from our collectd list. The current implementation requires an ID and a TYPE. Unfortunately, the collectd chart dos not contain these keys (see below). <IP>/graphs/type=device_collectd/device=15/c_plugin=<FOLDER_NAME>/c_type=counter/c_type_instance=<COUNTER_NAME>/to=1374136448/from=1374050048/ Has anyone been able to do this? (other thank "fix the down issue" ... which probably won't occur before the next polling cycle) any chance for a quick band-aid? e.g. some sort of acknowledgement mechanism, or an incremental counter check that emails just "new" circumstances (maybe a roll-up summary reminder of non-new every X polling cycles) doesn't have to be perfect end-state ... just something to drown out the noise until we get there. thanks for considering. I was very happy to donate to the kickstarter project as well. We have a wide variety of platforms that we monitor including Windows but the default Windows SNMP stack leaves a lot to be desired. Hi all, Please give a help here, I´m adding mysql app to a host. I have configured the agent at host and telnet to 36602 is ok. I also enabled unix-agent at modules for that host And I see it at polling: [mysql] => a0:4033341 a1:4020805 a2:120 a3:120 ... But I still get no images, just the message "Error drawing graph". Bulk Addition of Hosts?

Hello, I'm new to Observium and coming from Zenoss I have to say I love the simplicity and completeness of all the information available. I'm just stuck on one issue. I've added the hosts I want to monitor to the /etc/hosts file and have successfully added a few hosts manually. I've been reading through the wiki and looking through google and can't seem to find a way to bulk import hosts. I tried to script it in the following way (please don't hurt me I'm not much of a coder) for file in `cat routerdt1`; do ./addhost.php "$file" mycomm v2c; done But keep getting: Could not resolve i504562 i504562 being one of the hosts in the list routerdt1. If I run the addhost.php script manually it works. ./addhost.php i504562 mycomm v2c Trying community mycomm ... Discovering i545973 (42)i545973 42 ios (cisco) (etc etc) The file routerdt1 is in the format: I553476 I553500 I553364 I553173 I553274 I542788 I554040 I554398 I554488 Is there a way to take my list and add them into Observium? Am I missing something where there could be an auto add function? Thanks for your help on this, looking forward to using this product more. --Dave

Hello, i recently installed observium and it is amazing. There is one thing i found under "Global Settings". [autodiscovery] => Array ( ... [ip_nets] => Array ( [0] => 127.0.0.0/8 [1] => 192.168.0.0/16 [2] => 10.0.0.0/8 [3] => 172.0.0.0/8 ) Shouldn't the Entry "172.0.0.0/8" be "172.16.0.0/12" ? I know that the question " Can the monitoringintervall be changed, e.g. 5 min to 1 min" was already answered and the answer was "No". I just wanted to note that this is really sad, because 5 min is quite long for a fast changing parameter like Ethernet. We were monitoring a Gigabit-link with different intervalls ( cacti ) , with 5 min, 1 min and 10 sec The results are really surprising. Publish single graphs without authentication

Hi, I am looking at Observium as an alternative / addition to Cacti and it looks really nice so far. One thing I do with Cacti is publish single graphs of bandwidth on core routers and switches to websites (or wikis), so that other people can see that current usage very fast without having to access Cacti. This works by giving a guest (means: no login) read access and then just using the URL for the graph (e.g. .../graph_image.php?local_graph_id=330). The last part is as easy in Observium (../graph.php?type=port_bits&id=150&height=200&width=600), but I don't think there is an easy option to do this without authentication. Any idea on how to accomplish this? Thanks

JunOS Inventory

Here is a hack to get JunOS (potentially others?) to work via leveraging the pseudo Entity-MIB construct from SNMP::Info Bit nasty as you may need to ensure the MIBs required by SNMP::Info are available someone in your mibdirs I'm not overly impressed with the output of this, and at some stage will probably see if it can be improved. Perl into your install_dir/scripts etc… YMMV Cheers, Peter
