Publish single graphs without authentication

Hi, I am looking at Observium as an alternative / addition to Cacti and it looks really nice so far. One thing I do with Cacti is publish single graphs of bandwidth on core routers and switches to websites (or wikis), so that other people can see that current usage very fast without having to access Cacti. This works by giving a guest (means: no login) read access and then just using the URL for the graph (e.g. .../graph_image.php?local_graph_id=330). The last part is as easy in Observium (../graph.php?type=port_bits&id=150&height=200&width=600), but I don't think there is an easy option to do this without authentication. Any idea on how to accomplish this? Thanks

Graphs Missing Data

Here is a hack to get JunOS (potentially others?) to work via leveraging the pseudo Entity-MIB construct from SNMP::Info Bit nasty as you may need to ensure the MIBs required by SNMP::Info are available someone in your mibdirs I'm not overly impressed with the output of this, and at some stage will probably see if it can be improved. Perl into your install_dir/scripts etc… YMMV Cheers, Peter

The geolocation is performed by a third party, we have no way of influencing it. You could try switching to Google's geolocation. You can restrict the geochart to a single region, there is documentation on the wiki for that. Adam. "Michael F. USA States not dected.

Hello All, Just a note a have a site in Trenton, MI not Trenton, NJ its listing them in NJ area on the Map. All my nodes have City,State IE Trenton, MI just something you might want to look at. Also it would be cool to have the ability to limit the map to a "area" like for me just the USA. I just use solarwinds for Alerting and everything else is Observium but it would be nice to have the map not show all the countries. Keep up the great work the new layout looks GREAT! Mike

IP SLA

Hi. IP SLA is not showing any data in the graphs. I have found information of this problem before in the list but no solutions only others having similar problems. Everything looks ok from debug output, snmpwalk is getting ip sla data, rrds is being updated, SLA tab is there, graph with are showing up but with no data ! When doing a "rrdtool dump sla-1.rrd" I find data with future timestamps ?!  <row><v>1.3000000000e+01</v></row>  <row><v>6.0586666667e+01</v></row>  <row><v>6.1000000000e+01</v></row> No other rrd archive is showing future timestamps with data. My rrd knowledge is not very good but I suspect that there might be a connection with graphs not showing data ? My Observium installation work as expected except for IP SLA. Doing daily svn updates. Geographically distributed pollers with poller-wrapper.py

The problem is that the pollers write to rrd's local to the poller box and observium isn't written in a way where these can be easily distributed. I wrote the patch that added that comment as that was my goal. I tested using parallel rsync methods as well as using glusterfs replicated filesystem across multiple datacenters but couldn't get my polling runs + syncing to complete within 5 minute runs (quickest I could get were 8 minute runs writing to about 16,000+ rrds). I have a large number of ports however so smaller installations could probably work. I wonder what the plans are for being able to distribute observium across multiple hosts, geographically or not. Or if anyone else has attempted this. Problem with geolocation

Hi everyone, Been using for some time Observium as a potential replacement for our reporting system and we are now ready to put in production our server but I'm stuck at the moment. I know some people had this issue in the past and some fix were put in place but it doesn't work for me. On a newly installed server, when I try to add a host by addhost.php, the mysql insert query is not going through because the location_geoapi is empty. The easiest way of dealing would be to just allow null value or put a default value, but I would like to have a clean solution as we will use it for production. I don't know if there is something missing in my setup or what, but something I'm sure, the request to get the geo location doesn't go out as I don't see anything on my proxy. So, can someone can help me here? I can provide some debugging if you need more information. Fantastic product by the way, loving it. Adding new OS and types of devices

1) I have some devices that aren't known to Observium that I'd like to track. I've followed the instructions at http://observium.org/wiki/Developing/NewOS and made a new OS type for Ubiquiti EdgeOS routers. Diff here: http://www.tapodi.net/~jda/dev/edgeos.diff <http://www.tapodi.net/%7Ejda/dev/edgeos.diff> Did I do that correctly, and if so, how do I contribute it back into Observium? 2) Is there a preferred way to handle point to multipoint aggregation devices such as DSLAMs, GPON OLTs, and Wireless APs where you have client signal levels, modulation, etc? In particular I'd like to add support for Ubiquiti and Canopy APs where one would track multiple metrics for each associated client in addition to metrics from the device itself. E.g. Stats for the downlink can be gathered from the AP, but uplink has to be gathered from the client radios. Clients are only loosely associated with APs (they are discovered through a AP, can migrate to other APs, and don't have a static IP address). Client devices like this break the hostname-required rule but perhaps it isn't mandatory if they are discovered via the AP? <http://observium.org/wiki/Developing/NewOS>

Problem very LONG poll times

Last night when I went to bed the avg polling on a device was 5-50 sec and then morning it is 300-600 sec per device. My system is a vmware VM with 4 vcpu. 4gb ram and 15k drives in a SAN. Adam, You are right - I have confused ifAlias with ifDescr. Let's say that I have 1,000 Ethernet ports on Access Switches that are for desktop/laptop connections. These are going to be up/down randomly and I don't care. I don't want to investigate bandwidth or errors on them individually ALL of the time. I only want to do this when I am investigating a problem. I cannot Admin Down these interfaces - users need to use them I don't want to gather stats on them - because of storage/overhead/long polling I don't want to manage ifAliases on them - what would I name them - users move and come and go all of the time. I want to include uplinks and crosslinks and the device details only - not the end-user ports. I just want to exclude them from Observium as 'Ignored' How can I do that? Joe

Cisco 4900M temperature sensors not displayed

Hi list, On all the 4900M monitored, inlet and outlet temperature sensors from fixed and removable modules are not displayed as soon as a transceiver supporting DOM and reporting temperature is present in the chassis. I observed this behaviour on two different Observium installation version 4162 and 4016. Anyone else also seen this? Thanks Sidney

NFSEN name mapping

Hello, I am running revision 4151 on debian 7.1 and I am trying integrate nfsen into observium. Unfortunately, the tab does not show up and if I try to manually access the nfsen-tab the graphs are empty with the error "Error Drawing Graph". The graphs are looking fine in the webinterface of nfsen. Therefor I suspect a problem with the name mapping. Exclude interfaces with empty ifDescr

We have discovered only 21 devices and have 3266 ports. We will have over 2,000 devices. I want to ignore ports where ifDescr is null or whitespace. Currently, I have: $config['bad_if_regexp'][] = array("/^$/","","/\A\s*+\z/"); This is _not_ working, or at least it is not working for EXISTING, DISCOVERED ports. Please show me the way! I want to be able to remove the ifDescr from the network gear and have it stop being monitored and vice-versa (add an ifDescr and have it start being monitored). Thanks! I'm sure I just have something messed up in the regex.

Health probe not added

Hi, I have noticed that there's no health (temperature, dBm) measurement for one of interfaces on a Cisco 6500. Other ports are measured, traffic and erros on this port is measured. How to fix that? But what really irks me is the way and style of releasing new versions and committing to the SVN repository. 1) Commit messages. To quickly get a feel what changed between revisions I consult the svn log. That is the primary source of information. In the Observium SVN this often leads me to read things like this: r4147 - CODE, Y U NO LOOK RITE r4140 - Me need your soul, more souls. >:-> r4139 - you're not ready for this. :) r4125 - disable whatever the fuck that is r4101 - add some crappy errors And on and on. Things like that make me question the code quality that is committed to the repository. What kind of project do you want to be with these kind of commit messages? Mind you, I know that many people use cheeky or funny commit messages but normally they include some kind of explanation/context to see what has changed. That's missing here. This hurts the project. It projects an immature image. 2) Follow up to this: How is code quality review done? What are the procedures to decide when code is added to the repository and how do you make sure that the repository is stable for the majority of the users? Inversing in and out

Negative values in the ICMP graphics

Hello, I'm running Observium 0.13.6.4115 updated today and I see negative values in the ICMP graphics, it also fails to draw the preview images. Setup problem

Hi I am looking to implement snmp monitoring for the servers and network devices we support. I am looking at opennms and observium, and have them both running, monitoring some of our internal servers and devices. Observium is running on debian 7 - Wheezy. I believe I followed the debian specific installation instructions exactly, and Observium is up and running. I have configured it to monitor 2 of our Windows servers, 2 LINUX servers, a cisco router and sonicwall firewall. The initial discovery seems to have worked. However the olling does not seem to be working from cron. Looking at the observium.log > /opt/observium/discovery.php new June 5, 2013, 15:25 - 0 devices > discovered in 0. > 006 secs > /opt/observium/discovery.php new June 5, 2013, 15:30 - 0 devices > discovered in 0. > 007 secs > /opt/observium/discovery.php new June 5, 2013, 15:35 - 0 devices > discovered in 0. > 005 secs > ... discovery is running from cron every 5 mins as expected, but there is no mention in the log of poller.php running. I am sure I have been stupid and am missing something simple. All the graphs have a title Error Drawing Graph, guess that is because there is no data. Any help and advice would be appreciated, where to look to resolve the issues. Richard

Its largely unreliable because it relies on parts of the poller code working properly when run as the apache process. We rarely test it, and a lot of that code is horrific to debug. Adam. The web interface doesn't error out but when I try the command line I get: PHP Fatal error: Call to undefined function getHostOS() in /opt/observium/includes/functions.php on line 497 Can anyone else reproduce that...or advise on how to fix it. Billing started giving unrealistic P95s

Probably somewhere between r3465 to r3981 (yes, I know) billing started producing wrong results. now at 4102, the situation remains the same. I do run the discovery script after each update. Graphs (quick graphs) look fine with real traffic accounted, but the calculated P95 is unrealistically low (something like 1/3 of the real P95, but this ratio is different for each case). Both with single VLAN and multiple VLAN bills. One of the bills (with id=1) works completely fine though. Any ideas where to look at / what to compare at the working case with the non-working case? For Temperature OID = 1.3.6.1.4.1.1916.1.1.1.8.0 "Current temperature in degrees celcius measured inside device enclosure". For CPU OID = 1.3.6.1.4.1.1916.1.32.1.4.1.9.0 "The CPU utilization by system resources. This is the utilization of the system resources in the last 5 minutes". Add ignore iftype

I have many of the following ports on Cisco voice routers with PRI voice lines. I would like add them to the ignore list but everything I try will keep finding them. Am I missing something? This is from the snmpwalk. ifDescr.536 = STRING: EFXS 50/0/400 *** this one router has 400+ of them and they all show up in the router *** ifDescr.537 = STRING: Voice Encapsulation (POTS) Peer: 20208 *** Same here many show up on each router *** Some of the lines I have added to see if it will ignore them. IP SLAs

Hi guys, I’ve just noticed that Observium is showing up Cisco IP SLA targets (didn’t know the feature was there!) – however it doesn’t actually log any values. All the entries IDs and targets are in there (correctly) though: [cid:image003.png@01CE61C9.7B3A9280] It would be cool if they worked (now I’ve spotted it!). They are all recording NaN so I’m not sure if there is simply something not setup correctly on the Cisco side in order for Observium to be able to read it; or maybe if there a ‘supported’ setup of the IPSLA entries on the Cisco I’m meant to follow? The existing config for them is pretty uninteresting: ip sla 139 icmp-echo 10.0.5.139 frequency 10 ip sla schedule 139 life forever start-time now ip sla reaction-configuration 139 react timeout threshold-type immediate action-type trapOnly If a debug would help then I’ll post one, but first I wanted to check if it’s just not fully supported yet (or a known issue). High latency poller performance

Hi All, I've been testing some improvements to the Poller when deployed in high latency situations (polling hosts on different continents, for example). It involved some SNMP tweaks to pull more OIDs per round-trip, but has varying support in different OSes, so we're making it a hardcoded per-OS attribute. It seems to work particularly well on Cisco IOS, IOS-XR and Arista devices. http://alpha.memetic.org/~adama/snaps/fwy8vmmvii.png Shows the performance gains on a selection of Cisco IOS devices. I'll be committing the changes later today, disabled as default. If anyone wants to test them for us before we enable them as default, give us a shout. adam.

LDAP authentication changes

Hi everyone, I've made some modifications to the LDAP auth module; if you SVN up to r4114 or higher, please check if your LDAP auth is still working if you are using it. As far as I know (and on my test system), all defaults are sensible and should work just as before without changing anything, however some new features appeared, specifically to support active directory. An example config for AD is on the wiki. Nested groups don't work yet, I will hopefully get around to that soon. Thanks, Tom

ASR9k users?

Hi, Just curious if anyone is currently using Observium to monitor any Cisco ASR9k based devices? I can see that it has correctly identified all the various hardware modules, line cards and temperature sensors etc. but isn’t graphing things like temperatures or light levels like it does for our Cat6K workforce. Since this is the first ASR device I’ve tried polling on Observium I’m not sure if it’s just not fully supported or if we have some SNMP restrictions on the Cisco which are preventing it from getting what it needs. Memcached updates

Starting to use Memcached and found some of the current Memcached bits in Observium not working optimally. I wrote a new unix-agent script using python rather than PHP. The previous script relied on PECL memcached but didn't do anything for installations using PECL memcache. After a bunch of trial and error I determined that it was easiest to write the script in Python which requires the python-memcached library and is readily available on different OS types and versions. I also modified the applications/memcached.inc.php and polling/unix-agent.inc.php to accommodate the new script. They will also accurately separate different instances of memcached running on the same server as reported by the script. I'm still trying to work out a couple things. The main thing is when you enable Memcached as an application for a device Observium automatically creates an entry in the database but the instance is NULL. When the unix-agent reports on the Memcached instance(s) running on the server new entries get created in the database for each instance and the app with the NULL app_instance never gets used. I've been manually removing it from the database. If possible I would like to work it out so that it doesn't get created automatically. If that's not possible I was going to look into updating that entry with the first real instance reported by the agent. Also wanting to get the Apps tab for the Device to better identify each instance and maybe work on some additional metrics reporting for Memcached specific stats. Observium is designed for use in a service provider environment with a main design assumption being that one does not necessarily know what one wants to monitor until the data is needed. Hi, I have configured Observium to authenticate against ldap and it works great. When I go to add a new device or view the global configuration, I get the message: ERROR You have insufficient permissions to view this page. I have confirmed that I am in the observium-admin group. This is what I have for group permissions: $config['auth_ldap_groupbase'] = "ou=Groups,dc=example,dc=net"; $config['auth_ldap_groups']['observium-admin']['level'] = 10; There is nothing relevant in the observium.log. I work for a small ISP. For the past few weeks things have been running slow on the network. After working on and off of the problem for some time will no fix, I had to take a break from the problem. So I setup a VM running centos, I installed your software (the rhel howto has some mistakes). I then added the core switches and routers, 9 devices later I had the core mapped. After the software was running for 10 mins I started to see a problem. The core router that links up two ISP with BGP was having interface errors. Comes to find out the interfaces was running at half duplex. After fixing the duplex error the network came back to life. SNMP Printer polling

Good morning everyone... Ok.. I have my Canon printers working polling when using jetdirect as the OS type in separate include files in /observium/includes/discovery/os/, I was hoping to make them their own icon, and subset in the definitions.inc.php but seeing as how jetdirect is already declared as its own (I assume string?) (forgive me I am not a programmer)... Can I still make a separate definitions entry code block and split the 'jetdirect' code to a separate entity so I can leave the HP printers stuff alone and do the Canon separately?? Cheers, M.

Try to detect it using sysobjectid. Doing it via sysdescr is discouraged in new code. You can probably catch them all with a single string match that way. Adam. Hardware scaling

Hi All, I put together a very basic set of scaling guidelines : http://www.observium.org/wiki/Hardware_Scaling My sample size is quite limited, do any of you have useful numbers from large (>10k ports) installations? How much RAM does your /ports/ page take? (mouse over the perf on the bottom bar). How much average CPU load does your system have, and what CPU is it? newbie here, I have 0.13.5.4047 version and world map is not showing in front page. Also, i could not configure alert, when i click on alert it does not gives me any option to configure. maybe this is simple somewhere config ? but earlier I installed 0.13.5.3992 and world map is displayed.

There is no alerting. The tab is a ui placeholder. You need to explicitly enable the map by adding the freontpage order array. Its documented on the site. Adam. Good Afternoon All, Tom, Looks like you were right... Tried snmpwalking our Canon devices with the HP-LASERJET-COMMON MIB... Im positive I added them. What I ended up having to do was check the box to have them ignored, run the poller manually, uncheck that box then run the poller manually again. Now they're working just fine. Graphics issue

Hi all, I've been using observium a while ago and since the beginning the tool showed me the graphics like I show you in the attached picture. There are several "white spaces" marked on the time period (X axis), where the tools is not showing information. I read the FAQs section and I found this advice: "I'm getting a blank browser window on some pages, but not others", so I incremented the PHP memory parameter from 128M to 384M whithin the php.ini file but this did not work either so I come to you beggin your advice in order to resolve this problem. Besides I have 90 network equipments monitored with the observium application on a virtual server (6 GB of ram and 3 CPUs 3.0 Ghz). thank you so much for any help Regards

Manually fix bogus RRD data?

I have a router which was running glorious cisco code with a marvelous bug where the number of active ipsec tunnels kept increasing until I put a better IOS on it. So now I have a graph where the ipsec tunnels shoots to tens of thousands of ipsec tunnels, making the long term views pointless. Is there some easy way I can loop through a date range or similar and set the number of ipsec tunnels to some other number (like 10 instead of 22,000)? -- Alex Presse "How much net work could a network work if a network could net work?"
