Adding mysql monitoring

Checking out http://www.observium.org/wiki/Application/MySQL#Requirementsand seems pretty straight forward. I have my server running, added that box and see it collecting data now. php5-cli and php-mysql are installed on both the server and mysql server I wish to monitor, but nothing has been added and not sure how to force check, add, etc. Docs are simple enough; I created the user with access on the remote server. Then the steps are simply; *Copy* the mysql script *from scripts/agent-local/* in your observium install to */usr/local/check_mk_agent/local/* (/usr/lib/check_mk_agent/local/ on Debian systems) the *server* you wish to monitor. The remote server is running ubuntu, so I create a folder; /usr/lib/check_mk_agent/local with 2 files; mysql (script) mysql.cnf I can run the script locally and get a lot of data (here is a sample); root@mysql101:/usr/lib/check_mk_agent/local# ./mysql <<<mysql>>> a0:13362926 a1:50929 a2:4796992 a3:287789 So is it something on the server end I need to add/edit? All, I'm kind of hitting a wall here. Aggrgation, Nagios Check, Graph Caching

Hi, After using Observium for some time I have some ideas and questions: * Is it possible to create aggregated graphs? F.e. I'd like to aggregate all uplinks (which are on different routers) into one big graph (all uplinks as a single line, in one graph (overlay). And the traffic aggregated). * This could maybe end up in a Dashboard, which shows me an overview of what's going on in the network. (Aggregated Graphs, Top Ports, Recent Syslog, High Values, ...) * I'd like to check some values collected by Observium with Nagios to generate an Alert (F.e. the temperatures, dBm, ...). This could be a plugin like "check_observium <device> <type> <thresholds>". How can I access the raw data in Observium from outside? Is there something like this available, or does it need to be written? My main concern is to have just one tool which Polls the devices and get the collected data out of it. I don't want to have many tools which are all doing SNMP. One single tool should be enough. * How can I get the graphs out of Observium to display in another tool? * Are there any caching mechanisms for the Graphs? Everytime I hover over a link which creates a Pop-Up the graphs are being generated. What about caching the generated graphs for f.e. 5 minutes? Cheers and thanks a lot for this great tool! Tom, Thanks for the reply. I did get more into the UPS's and they all show "Load Power % of Watts" Only the RT shows Load Current and also all show runtime remaining. Hello all, I have the fallowing UPS's With APC 9617 Management cards Smart-UPS 1000 600.3.D Does not report Current draw Smart-UPS RT 2000 XL 801.3.D Everything works SMART-UPS 2200 80.11.D Does not report Current draw Everything else is reporting just not the draw on the other UPS's I have updated to APC Management Module AOS v3.7.3 / App v3.7.2 Can I Upgrade the Firmware on the UPS its self? Still Only the 2000 XL reports Current If I could ask it would be nice to see the Runtime on the UPS. Any sugestions on how to fix the current for the 1000 & 2200 UPS's I know there older UPS's but they work very well and was looking at getting more 1000's down the road but if I have to go with a newer UPS to get this to work that's ok to. Hi - Warning: Here's another one of the "I installed it but it doesn't work!" e-mails. I recently setup Observium (SVN from Dec 23, 2012) on a Debian testing/unstable x86_64-based host. I followed all of the instructions with the exception of the installation of libvirt packages (I don't appear to have a need for it) and although I appear to have successfully added devices, none of them show up in the web UI. Cisco MPLS networks with pseudowires

All, I'm looking at rewriting the Cisco pseudowire code, as it basically doesn't work properly at all. Do any of you have a small network using pseudowires (MPLS and/or L2TPv3) you don't mind giving SNMP access to, or a bunch of spare lab routers you could spare for a while to put up a test network? Only Cisco is really relevant at the moment, as the MIBs for doing this are vendor specific! :( Thanks, adam.

Hi I've got syslog working like a charm... My devices are logging to my observium installation and the /syslog page are displaying everything nicely. But today something weird happened. The time is now 11:18 on december the 20th. esxi 5.1 cpu graph not working properly

Hi I am having some issues with the CPU graph in my home lab with a small server running esxi 5.1 with a dual core amd cpu. I have attached a screenshot of the problem. IPSEC tunnel count continuously increments

I've built a DMVPN test network with one hub and one spoke and upon monitoring them, I notice the graph for IPSEC Active Tunnels (/graphs/type=device_cipsec_flow_tunnels) increments by one every hour - only on the spoke router, not on the hub. So I'm wondering where Observium is grabbing that piece of data from? Which SNMP OID? If I do a "show crypto eli" on the spoke, I have 2 active sessions (Observium now reports 66), and 12 on the hub (Observium reports 5). Any ideas? Hi All I've noticed, that when I go to Ports->All Ports, all Ports are displayed instead of the first 100. When clicking Next or so, then the pagination works. Is this a bug or a feature ? Hello, I'm student of Faculty of Applied Sciences (University of West Bohemia - Czech Republic) and I'm doing semester project about Observium. I tried to instal and use this program. But when I intalled it on Debian I had problem. Main webpage of this program working but when I choose any item in menu then it show me "page not found". For example: when I choose Overview than show me: Not Found The request URL/overview/ was not found on this server. --- Apache/2.2.16 (Debian) Server at localhost Port 80 I found on some forum that I need to add line: 'AllowEncodedSlashes On' in Virtual host, but that isn't work. popup overview graph set positioning

Greetings, Nice looking application. Playing with the demo now, and noticing that when I hover over a link (e.g. postman.memetic.org on URL http://demo.observium.org/devices/type=server/) it produces a slick overview popup. Unfortunately, much of the popup is below the edge of my browser, and moving my mouse makes the popup go away. I'm using chrome on debian wheezy, and I was wondering if this was the reason, or if the popup is just pinned to the mouse location. Seems like having the popup auto-adjust position to ensure it stays on the page would be a good optimization. It's also possible there is a workaround/preference I am unaware of (played with it for all of 10 minutes so far). -C

One last issue, With latest version if you add two ports to a bill the description for the first entry shows under the second item and the description for the second item is not seen. If you have more than 2 interfaces in the bill - then the interface description information is offset by one and you don't see the last description. Alert Question

Sorry if this comes as a double post, as I sent it out, then was prompted to confirm my email to the list. If so, disregard (or answer since I haven't seen one yet) ;) So I have nagios running smooth for one company and working with another was introduced to observium. Interface is excellent, but I have 2 questions. 1. Alerts. I had a dev box hit around 97% disk space with no notice. So there is an alerts tab, but I don't see how to configure alerts, thresholds, etc. Looking at the wiki ( http://observium.org/wiki/Configuration_Options#Simple_API_Settings) I do see some things, but no simple [add alert] type thing, so is there something I can read, etc. as I continue to play? 2. Search header. The one I was shown before I did the install had the company logo (I see where to change that, colors, etc.) but they had the searchbar just not there (and I can see why). I can click the [hide] but I would like to completely remove it, but don't see where/how to accomplish. Chrome issue with 6k Crossbar

Hi, There seems to be an issue with ‘Normal’ view and the Catalyst 6k Crossbar graph images in Chrome (latest 23.0.1271.95 m) It’s fine in Widescreen view and it’s also fine in Internet Explorer. Hi, it seems the JavaScript bugs when adding a bill, whenever I click on "Add Port" it redirects me back to "/#addport", displaying my log-overview. Also adding a bill from the view of a port wont work either, even though I open "/bills/view=add/port=27/", the port is not added to the created bill. Is this a known "feauture"? I remember having to add bills and services raw into the SQL, I dont mind doing so but I cant seem to find the wiki-entry for it again... Moving an interface from one device to another and having the graph follow

I just moved a transit link from router 1 to router 2. I cleared the old interface on router 1 and copied it to router 2. When I went back to my Observium graphs, the aggregate graphs picked up the interface in the transit aggregate graph, but all the old data was lost. I guess this doesn't really surprise me, although it might be kinda cool to have Observium automagically move the graph to the new interface if the new interface description matches, but that might be a little problematic if there was ever a case where a dedupe was required on interface descriptions, so I digress.. Is there a way to get that old data back somehow? Thanks in advance.

Hi Tom, I've been afraid you would say something like that. Lets just hope there'll be a replacement in future... About Nagios, I've been on nagios for quite a while now and just switched back to Observium once again. I definitely prefer Observium over Nagios to be honest, after all I always ended up with Observium in the end ;) However, I could imagine an NMap integration into Observium for probing Ports and Services; Since Observium already knows which ports are open, it should be possible to wrap NMap in a shell-script and let it execute along service-polling for probing and service analysis. Missing info

Hiya, We're just started using Observium and are quite impressed. We've added a few of our devices - just the key ones. What were seeing is that for the devices they are missing some of the data. For example the following tabs are missing - Health, VLANs, Map and Inventory. The environment panels are missing (Processors, Memory etc.) The poller is running successfully and the port information is being populated and graphs are draw correctly. What we're not doing is running the Discover command. AFAICT it will add to Observium devices it finds from CDP as a matter of course. We don't want that to happen. My uneducated guess is that the discover command is also picking up some of the information we're missing. (I've run the command briefly then killed it when I realised what it was doing, and some of the devices are populated with Health, VLANs etc.) If I'm right, is there a way to gather the above information about the devices already present but not add any more? I've got: $config['dp_autocreate'] = false; ## Autodiscover unknown hosts seen via discovery protocols in the config but discover still seems to add new devices. If I'm wrong then could someone set me straight please? I have a fresh installation of Observium on Centos 6 64 bits. I can see the main page without problems, but when a i try to click on any page, devices, locations, etc i get a 404 code. The installation is on a dedicate vhost, any idea of what can be wrong?. Thanks in advanced

question about arista devices

Hi we have added a couple of arista devices to observium. But we are missing a few things. Ospf neighbours are not showing. The routing tab on the device page is not showing And the config tab is not coming up on the device page. Are we doing something wrong? Or is it something we can easily fix? Kind regards, maarten

30 minute poll issue

Hi Guys, Got a weird issue which has just started, seemingly by itself but I imagine there was a cause (I just don't know it yet!). In short, every 30 minute the poller decides that approximately a third of all devices (92 in total) are 'Offline'. They then magically recover on the next poller interval. The devices are not offline, and the Observium host does not loose connectivity (I've tested with numerous pings etc. during this predictable failure period). Interestingly, the host on which Observium runs does record these interesting CPU and RAM metrics during that particular polling run: [cid:image001.png@01CDCBDF.93DC5B50] [cid:image002.png@01CDCBDF.93DC5B50] Now, I'm guessing that there is maybe a more substantial 'discovery' run or similar every 30 minutes. For some reason, this more intensive run seems to be resulting in a load of devices going allegedly offline. The problem started on Friday around 11pm and has repeated like clockwork since. We are running the latest SVN. I'm a bit uncertain where to start with this one as although it's predictable I can't really see anything which would cause it to happen. The poller doesnt run 'out of time', no hosts are ever skipped. The poller simply runs to completion. If it takes longer than 5 minutes, it simply starts a new one while the other is still running, which may blow up your system in the longer run. It’s running on an enterprise grade Kingston SSD, along with Cacti. The host is fairly low-load (it only runs a few monitoring systems and a couple of virtual routers). CPU and network load on the physical host for today are: It has a 1GB NIC and I’ve already checked but over the last 4 hours it hasn’t dropped a single ICMP ping to any of the 4 targets I’ve been continuously polling directly from the Observium VM. Three of the targets were repeatedly showing as down, until I suspended a few hosts on the total devices list. For what it’s worth, the other monitoring instance on there (Cacti) has about 7,000 data sources and isn’t missing a single one. It is on a one-minute polling interval and takes between 10 and 12 seconds to complete. Observium has also been flawless up until now. Interestingly, at 19:10 I moved to the poller-wrapper and re-enabled the hosts that I had disabled. Now CPU usage during each poll is approx 2x and the duration of the polling event is now about 45 seconds according to the wrapper. Since that change, I’ve not had a host go down? It could be coincidence, so I’m going to leave it overnight without making any other changes and see if by the morning it has started doing it again. Out of curiosity - is it possible, with a single poller instance (i.e. what I had before) that should a host respond correctly to the first SNMP get / ping, but then take a very long time to respond to the rest of the polls (say 5 seconds per OID), that it could delay the polling process enough for it to run out of time before hitting all the targets? Thus declare the rest it missed as ‘down’ because it never got around to them? I only ask because if this is possible then it could explain why adding more hosts could lead to this as there are a couple which I know are particularly slow to respond. Specifically they are hardware-integrated SNMP modules on systems which run tiny ARM chips and linux 2.4.21-rmk1. They are _slow_ to get their answers back, especially if two systems are concurrently polling them. If it isn’t possible, then that’s obviously off the mark, but the fact that the wrapper (appears) to have resolved it makes me wonder enough to ask :) Cheers! We did change the loop around the rrdtool binary, but that shouldn't affect polling. Detecting up/down doesn't really have any prerequisites. It does an ICMP ping and a UDP snmpget. If either of those fail to return, and the host isn't already down, it changes the value in the database to down and skips the rest of the poll. There is nothing really code-related that could cause the effects you're seeing, only the return packets failing to reach the PHP process in time. can't get syslog working

Hi I'm having a hard time getting syslog to work. I've enabled the syslog menu in config.php by inserting "$config['enable_syslog'] = 1;" Ive tried using both rsyslog and syslog-ng. But the syslog menu in observium is just blank? upgrading ios cause new sensors oid appear

Hi, So we just upgraded one our cisco7201 device from 15.0(1)M3 to 15.1(3)S4, and all sensors data disappear, after while it rediscover some of them but using different(?) OID. At least what I see is, old RRD files still exist but no longer updated, here is example new files: mempool-cemp-4.1.rrd mempool-cemp-4.2.rrd mempool-cemp-4.3.rrd and old mempool-cemp-3.1.rrd mempool-cemp-3.2.rrd mempool-cemp-3.3.rrd Temperature sensors move into different MIB? because old files was: sensor-temperature-cisco-entity-sensor-19.rrd sensor-temperature-cisco-entity-sensor-18.rrd sensor-temperature-cisco-entity-sensor-17.rrd and new: sensor-temperature-cisco-2.rrd sensor-temperature-cisco-3.rrd sensor-temperature-cisco-1.rrd All voltage sensors now gone, which is kinda weird, but probably is some kind cisco weirdness or just move them to other MIB. Is this some kind Cisco MIB(OID) mess we have here or something else?

Currently I have two Switch 4510G 48-Port Software Version 5.20 Release 2202P18, and is not generated graphics of Memory, CPU and Temperature. I saw that this switch is not officially supported. As I understand I need to make this switch model files in the directories: / opt / observium / includes / discovery / temperature / opt / observium / includes / discovery / processors / opt / observium / includes / discovery / mempools Is this correct? Somebody use this model?

VMware VM's vanished

Hi all, I recently added all our ESXi hosts to Observium, previously they were only in our other systems. I was pleased to see all the VMs appear on it (this didn't work last time I tried about a year ago, which is why they weren't in Observium). However, about an hour later I checked up on them and they have all disappeared; well, sort of: [cid:image001.png@01CDC4B4.8D572B70] All of this 'was' correct (honest) when I first added them. The same is true for all the hosts I've added, although they do all have the correct number of 'blank' entries though? A couple of questions on port details

1. I notice that with the Real time graph running on a port, quite often the graph will calculate a negative number resulting in gaps in the graphs. Has anyone else experienced this? Is it expected? 2. The Arp Table output for my ports are blank. Does this feature work for you? If so, does anyone have this working with Arista switches?

Alerting Contrib?

Hi, I recently had a very good experience setting up Observium with in a mixed switch, router and server environment; everything was so much slicker than Nagios. Despite the inclusion of "Alerting" tabs, I was assured on the IRC channel that there is no alerting functionality with Obs at this time. Has anyone produced their own addon/scripts/strategy for basic alerting? Best regards Darren

6500 Fabric Ingress/Egress scale

Hi Guys, Firstly, apologies for the screen-shots / attachments, but they are required to demonstrate the oddness... I think there is a scaling issue on (or I'm not understanding) the Fabric load bars for the Catalyst 6k. In short, the load bars (to the right of the mini-graph) always seem to show zero, or near zero, even though load is not zero. Example below or attached (or missing, depending on how this list handles images :)) [cid:image003.png@01CDBF49.C8C03550] All bars are showing 2% Ingress and 1% Egress. Below is a zoomed in version of the graphic for Slot 1 Fabric 0: [cid:image002.png@01CDBF48.A37B26C0] This shows ingress is 4% and egress is 2% right now. Load is quite low at the moment so it's not an excellent example I agree - but I can honestly say that even when it's high the most I see on those bars is 2%. So, am I being stupid (quite possible) and these bars mean something else or is there some sort of issue with them or their maths? We have 11 of these chassis, and I've checked them all. They all either show zero or are reading 1 or 2% despite having much higher real loads. Important: alert mails disabled by default

Hi, This is a notification about an important change! In some cases, Observium sends out alert emails upon events. While we always advised to disable these as they are mostly rubbish, they were, until now, enabled by default. They are now disabled, since revision 3406. This means that when you update you will no longer receive the alert emails. If you want to keep receiving these alerts after you svn up to r3406 or higher, add this to your config.php: $config['alerts']['email']['enable'] = TRUE Hopefully we'll have a decent threshold/event/alert system soon; ideas about this are very welcome in our IRC channel. scaling towards >100GE LAGs

I propose we let the RRDs accept up to a terabit/sec instead of the current 100gigabit/sec limit. In a year or so we can up it again. :-) (or make it a configurable option!) would be possible, but would much rather have that as a php or other plugin to the gui so it can happen all on the same screen/time of object creation/deletion. It avoids having people who do NOT have unix skills needing to get into the os for simple day/day operation (which here is adding/removing devices). This though is secondary to grouping for large deployments. Procedure to add a MIB file for a device already monitored by Observium

Hello, I put a MIB file in /opt/observium/mibs/ for a device whose interfaces I already monitor with SNMP. In order to have Observium uses the MIB to monitor all its components do I just run "/opt/observium/discovery.php -h new" again or do I have to modify "config.php" then run "/opt/observium/discovery.php -h new"? IP SLA

I have setup two devices with IP SLA, however I am not getting anything in Observium. One is a Cisco 877W 12.4(24)T6, the other is a Cisco 2901 15.1(4)M3. I verified that the IP SLA module is enabled, I must be missing something?

fresh installation, no login screen

I've followed the installation instructions to the letter, and while I can get to the observium webpage, I can see observium logo and the text "Big Graphs | Widescreen | Not logged in!" on the top right of the page, I can't see anything else. Furthermore, when I look at the HTML source of the page delivered, it ends with " Not logged in!" and not with </HTML> as I would expect. The machine is a brand new Amazon EC3 VM running Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS. I'd appriciate any help. I don't see anything of interest in the apache logs. The same client (browser) works OK for the live demo. thanks Elad

Device Traffic Graph

Hi, I set up several devices on Obervium, no problem so far, except for the Traffic Graphs which remain empty. For example : http://img4.hostingpics.net/pics/168961data.jpg The RRD file exist, but the data always return 0.00 How can I debug that ? Is there an snmpwalk command to help understand the problem ? First off, let me say thanks to the developers of Observium. This piece of code is one of the most amazing pieces of code I have used for my network monitoring purposes to date. I have a few questions that I'm hoping someone can answer - BGP: ---- I have a few eBGP speakers that live inside a VRF. Observium picks up the VRFs just fine, but the routing tab for the device only seems to show the BGP sessions that exist in the global (non-VRF) table. Is it possible to show the BGP sessions that exist inside a VRF? Pseudowires: ------------ I see lots of data inside the pseudowires table on the observium database, but I don't see any of that inside the pseudowires tab from within a device where I know pseudowires are configured. These pseudowires exist on IOS boxes, IOS-XR boxes and IOS-XE boxes. I do see a few. Observium > Ports > Pseudowires shows me 11 pseuowires. 6 of them are duplicates of one another while 5 are unique. The database shows hundreds. Is that on the road map, by chance? Discovery: ---------- There are a couple of devices that aren't getting discovered for some reason. The IP that their hostname resolves to is within the 'nets' arrays configured inside config.php and I have other SNMP devices that reach those boxes, so I know the SNMP side is sound. Likewise, I can see the device in question in the CDP table of an adjacent device, so I know that part is working as well. I've looked at a ./discovery -d of an adjacent device hoping to see a clue about why the device is being skipped, but nothing is striking out at me. Hostname truncating: -------------------- We name our devices <device><device_number>.<pop>.<city>.domain.tld. In the devices view, it shows the full device name no problem. In the VRF view, for example, however, it shows only <device><device_number>, truncating the pop and city portions. If anyone has any insight or guidance on these issues, I'd be grateful! Unable to get non-MySQL Auth working - 500 error

Hello. First off, let me say that this project is AWESOME!!! I am blown away at how comprehensive the graphing is across our network gear. Bravo. That said, I need a hand in figuring out why I cannot seem to get any auth-method other than mysql to work. If I so much as toggle to any other auth-method (ldap or http-auth), I immediately get a 500 'Internal Error' when I try to hit the Observium login page. I'm ultimately trying to get auth to the application to be handled via LDAP, but I can do it via either the observium-ldap component or via http-auth combined with mod_authz_ldap... makes me no difference. I've had some success w. mod_authz_ldap in that I can get authentication to actually pass for a user account (I am able to bypass the login promptsuccessfully), but as soon as I auth, I hit the dreaded 500. I'm not able to find anything in any http logs regarding what might be possibly throwing the 500. lsof lists any open filehandles for httpd, so I've checked every possible file that logs could be directed to, but no cluesthus far. This particular box is a RHEL5 running Observium 0.12.10.3396 Any ideas are welcome. Cheers, -Chris

unix agent polling broken in 3397 - likely a couple of versions before too

No data for servers using the unix agent for a couple of weeks now. Have Observium build 3397 installed. Just had a chance to do some troubleshooting... Backing Up Observium

Hi I need to ensure our install of Observium is fully backed up and I'd rather not backup the entire VM. Could you please confirm if all I need to backup are: * /opt/observium directory * Observium database * /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/000-default What I'd like to achieve from the backups is to spin up a new VM instance, run through the install steps to get the required components installed, then restore the files so that Observium then just runs as it was at the point of the last backup. I have tried checking the FAQ and a search of the mailing list but I couldn't find any specific instructions. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. HIgh CPU on ASR

After adding ASR 1002 (used as PPPOE termination) to Observium, CPU on ASR raised to 90%, and stayed that way, untill I blocked it (after 30 minutes). Normal CPU is aroiund 10%. Is this a normal? Don't think so.... ASR1002 has cca 5000 connected users. iRoza

Cisco CUCM Support

Has anyone looked into fully supporting the Cisco UCM stuff? It looks like it is mainly a mix of Cisco CCM and Cisco/HP/IBM hardware mibs depending on what platform it is on. I specifically have UCM5xx series, the SMB PBX in a box - CME variant and the larger full Unified Communications Manager 5000 systems, running the linux-derived UCM apps on Cisco branded UCS, IBM or HP hardware. I did find this: http://smbitsolutions.wordpress.com/2011/05/02/2-may-2011-1341/ I do have a system I could expose for testing if someone is up for this? I have the same request for Cisco CUBE (SIP-SIP) gateway support, which looks like it is just a mib on the relevant supported hardware. I believe it is the same mib for standard SIP monitoring on other Cisco platforms, but I could be wrong. At the moment the UCM 5000 shows as a generic server, with standard net-snmp type support, and the CUBE devices just show as routers. I currently use a Cacti install alongside my Observium systems for the sole purpose of monitoring the above. Would be nice to stick to one. Thanks, John

vlan ids nor port member not updated ??

Hy all, i'm using observium since 2 weeks now, i found a strange behavior. it can detect vlan defined in a switch at first, but it doesn't update them (removed or added vlans) nor update vlan port member. is there anything wrong with my observium deployment ? switch: D-Link DGS-3120 and D-Link DES-1210 any clues truely appreciated, i can't figure out what is going wrong :( Regards, Xinity

custom graph questions, almost done

So I am not sure if this belongs on the dev list as I am not really doing core dev work and I am not currently subscribed to it. I will definitely contribute my work back to you guys though (if you wanted it). Its for graphing md3000i performance data (stupid thing isnt accessible through snmp, so its basically data attached to the management host). Anyway, I have been following the following example: http://www.observium.org/wiki/Developing/NewGraph and I am not sure about few things. 1) What are the following values for? Specifically the Pages/pages part. I understand that it cycles through the stats that i have setup, but I am not sure about the words Pages/pages. foreach ($stats as $stat) { $i++; $rrd_list[$i]['filename'] = $rrd_filename; $rrd_list[$i]['descr'] = "Pages " . ucfirst($stat); $rrd_list[$i]['ds'] = "pages" . ucfirst($stat); } 2) Now that I have the agent script created and the rest of the scripts in the tutorial, how am I supposed to activate it for a host? I am assuming it should probably be "activated" within the applications list? If so, I am guessing there is logic missing in that example tutorial on how to add it to the list of application options? 3) Is creating a diff and reapplying after every upgrade really the recommended method? Its to bad all the definitions are in a single file or else that might be a little easier to manage. 4) Any idea what type of logic i should be using to figuring out the proper numbers for the rrd graph settigns in this code section? rrdtool_create($rrd_filename, "--step 300 \ DS:pagesShared:GAUGE:600:0:125000000000 \ DS:pagesSharing:GAUGE:600:0:125000000000 \ DS:pagesUnshared:GAUGE:600:0:125000000000 ".$config['rrd_rra']); 5) What format should the agent script output be in? This check takes about 5 seconds and is probably a resource hog on the management host since the script has to run a stupid java cli app. The management server in this case is the same host as the observium system, so I wouldnt have a problem not using the agent and just doing a cron if that was somehow an option. unix-agent scripts conflicting with check_mk

I cant seem to use any of the unix-agent scripts with check_mk as it ruins all the check_mk local script results. Basically any existing scripts start giving an error in the check_mk gui and state "Check output not found in local checks". If I reinventory the host, none of the scripts show up at all. As soon as i remove the observium local agent scripts from the check_mk local folder and I reinvetory the host, everything is fine again. I am unfortunately not sure what our options are though. The only thing I can think of is to somehow serialize the data so that it shows up on one line for each script, then is parsed back out by observium once it receives it. That way we easily ignore them within our main.mk files. Can't really do that now because of how there are so many lines for each result (apache/mysql for example). Thoughts? Im quite surprised this hasn't already been an issue. I am running check_mk 1.2.0p3 and observium 0.12.9.3385. - MACscr

Hello, I just installed Observium from SVN on Ubuntu Ubuntu 10.04.4 LTS. I fallowed the Ubuntu installation guide. Observium comes up but when I log in. But when I click any of the links at the top they say "Not found" and give a invalid URL. For example when I click Devices> Add Devices it sends me to server.com/addhost/ which doesn't exist, because in the addhost directory is in a subdirectory called "pages." Did I miss something during the install? I have tried it a couple times, and reinstalled the server. Thanks! --Will

Services are deprecated. The code is still there because it would take time to remove. Do not use it. We have plans to implement better alerting in the future, but there is always a shortage of time. Hi all, Sorry. 1) Offtopic. I unfortunately do not get your answers via mail. And look at them through http://postman.memetic.org/pipermail/observium/2012-September/thread.html How do I reply to this thread - but do not start a new topic every time? I have long lost touch (and forgotten) how to use mailing lists - last it was 10 years ago. 2) For monitoring unix servers use snmp? I do not understand a bit - but then why in wiki talk about the unix- agent. I saw that to unix-agent in any way no related to snmp. In my look this product have a lot of undocumented features that are unclear how they work. Regards, Andrey

Hi all! Sorry for the newbie question. I just Installed Observium. Connected to many snmpv3 network devices - Cisco, Extreme, Juniper ... I'm fine. I'm happy with everything. Now I want to connect my first Linux server. But I find no documentation - how? I installed check_mk_agent on linux. root@monitoring:/opt/observium# telnet x.x.x.60 6556 | head Trying x.x.x.60... The maths and specs suggest a modern SSD should survive observium workload for quite a while, but I'm still worried about the random failure rate and the likelyhood that individual cells get worn out. In general SSDs are such a strange tech, there's almost no way to really improve them except with fancy controller hacks, the flash itself is a dead end tech. I would recommend dumping the data to a real disk occasionally, as observium/rrd-style workloads are pretty hard on flash-based storage. I have SSDs in my workstations, but I'm not sure if I'd trust them in a server quite yet. Please report back if/when it breaks :-) Adam.
