port ignore partly fails on large number of ports

Hi, I recently discovered the following : When trying to set "Ignore" status on switches with large number of ports (eg. force10 e1200 or c300 chassis), the setting doesn't get saved for some of the ports. More specific, at the end of the list. This is what I did : Toggle all -> removed the toggle from the mgmt interface -> then save What happens: Most ports get "ignored" status, part of them don't After getting the status, they again have a 'not-ignored-status' (checkbox not checked). If I check them again & press save -> same issue. Seems like the checkboxes only get processed to a certain number of items ? Does this sound familiar ? Accurate Graphs in Billing are probably not so accurate

Hi I've noticed two things in the "Accurate" graphs in the Billing part: 1. Are Interface counter overflows or equipment reboot) probably not catched? - I see very high spikes (200 Gbps and more) on a 1G interface sometimes in sometimes out, but not at the same time. the quick graphs are ok 2. If I monitore more tha one interface for billing (Unfotunately one of the is down) the accurate graps are at leaset 1000 times to high... Atached some graphs... I runn lates svn (0.12.9.3378). Eaton Powerware UPS

Hi all, First time poster here. We use observium here at our office and think it is a great program. We were interested in having observium read SNMP information from our Powerware 9130 UPS's. Currently observium can't identify them. We were wondering if there was any interest in the community to write a snmp module to read from the Powerwares. The documentation for the SNMP values is posted in the PDF files which I can provide. If there is positive interest for anyone on helping take this on I can also provide SNMP walks of my Eatons. Doing some more digging here, it appears UCD-SNMP-MIB values for ssCpuUser (system & idle) are being populated correctly from checkpoint utm/splat deployments. But other items like interrupts, etc are working. The cpu values appear to be stored in the checkpoint enterprise mib: -- CHECKPOINT-MIB::multiProcIndex.1.0 = INTEGER: 1 CHECKPOINT-MIB::multiProcIndex.2.0 = INTEGER: 2 CHECKPOINT-MIB::multiProcUserTime.1.0 = INTEGER: 0 CHECKPOINT-MIB::multiProcUserTime.2.0 = INTEGER: 1 CHECKPOINT-MIB::multiProcSystemTime.1.0 = INTEGER: 100 CHECKPOINT-MIB::multiProcSystemTime.2.0 = INTEGER: 2 CHECKPOINT-MIB::multiProcIdleTime.1.0 = INTEGER: 0 CHECKPOINT-MIB::multiProcIdleTime.2.0 = INTEGER: 97 CHECKPOINT-MIB::multiProcUsage.1.0 = INTEGER: 100 CHECKPOINT-MIB::multiProcUsage.2.0 = INTEGER: 3 -- Found the current version of the mib as well as a checkpoint 32x32 graphic that can be added to the project (attached) in case someone has more time to play with it than I do. I'm still trying to wrap my head around the coding here to update this for first, base OS (per-cpu) utilization, then expand on it to something similar to the ASA firewall tab. Also it appears that the vendor has an issue with the netsnmp package supplied with the default media 5.0.9) but they do have an update package (5.3.1). This at least provides for cpu enumeration but still no stats (per above).

This is probably because the device frequently returns invalid data. A common problem with tacked systems like the 3750 and VSS. Adam. Strange graph

Hi, Graphs for my stack was not correct. I have 4 swtich in stack. And observium return values very strange. 500Go by interface.... :/ Cisco IOS Software, C3750 Software (C3750-IPBASEK9-M), Version 15.0(2)SE, I have the last svn update on centos 6.2 I test to delete the host, delete rrd directory, and add my host. No more graphs after upgrade

Hello, I have a problem I had revision 3049, due to a small problem displaying the heath status of the drives I updated to HEAD and immediatly run ./discovery.php -h new. All functionality seems to be there but I have no new graphs, any ideas on how to troubleshoot/fix this problem? Thank you. Max Leon

[Patch] Collectd v5 Apache fix

I do have some older nokia systems (IP380's, IP530's, and I think an IP740) laying around somewhere, but most of the new systems are using Secure Platform (R65, R70, R71, R75) versions and/or UTM's (basically the same thing, they all RedHat Enterprise v5.4 9(2.6.18 kernel) slimmed down with an extra checkpoint mib tree for items outside the base OS). We also have some provider-1 deployments (management station) but that I would consider future if anything. solaris 10 / net-snmp not getting cpu stats

Still testing with various devices here, found an interesting issue. I have a M3000 sun box with solaris 10 on it, which gets added fine and most of the graphs appear to be eyeball correct, however am NOT stats for cpu utilization. Interfaces are polled via IF-MIB. Almost every device is identical for that. Either you switch is not exposing these interfaces in snmp or they are being filtered. Try running discovery in debug for that host. Adam. Hello, On a fresh install of observium on ubuntu 12.04 (LAMP) we are having issues with the graphs not showing up. The graphs display as a broken image icon. If you access the image url directly that is loading /graph.php?.... you still get a broken image. But when you try to debug the issue, (we append &debug=1 to the url) the image displays correctly. Turning on debuging on the parent page yields no useful data, and the graphs are still broken images, but we assume that is because the debug variable isn't passed down to the image url. The graphs are getting generated in the /tmp directory and have valid data. I am at a loss of where to look to figure out what we either forgot to do or have misconfigured. Subversion shows that we are upto date at version 3360 Thank you, Brian

Post saturation warnings / alerts disabled ?

Dear all, For some reason, I'm getting Port saturation threshold warnings for ports on a switch where I have disabled 'alerting' for that specific port. Is that normal ? Or some kind of bug ? Observium Not logged in!

I've installed a new server under Ubuntu server like describe in the documentation. I've create a user (adduser) I've create a host (addhost), running discovery and poller without error. But, when I try to connect I've no login page, only the logo Observium and in the top right " Widescreen | Not logged in!" Any idea ? Alert emails not working

Hello List, I used to get emails of alerts (including BGP, temperature) but not anymore. I keep on doing SVN updates every week. I noticed that the emails were not coming after many updates. I've not changed any settings. I wonder what is wrong. I have set SNMP contact as 'netadmin' in all my routers. Observium was sending emails to this alias. Anybody knows how to fix this? Installation help with menu items

Hi - I have a new installation of observium running on apache on gentoo. When I go to the main page (http://myserver/observium/html/) it looks similar to the demo and I see the data. But, when I click on the menu items, they don't work. For example, if I click on Locations I get The requested URL /index.php/locations// was not found on this server. Any ideas as to what I've configured incorrectly? Thanks Dave

Cisco 2900 Router VRF display Issue

Hi, I have situation where Observium shows VRF information for all of my 2800 series routers but not my 2900 series router. Also the config tab is not showing up either from the rancid integration, but it does for all of my 2800 series routers. I have removed and added the router back but that did not seem to change anything. All of other information appears to be displaying and rancid is pulling the configuration without any issues. Has anyone run into this? The 2900 is running IOS ver. 15.0(1)M3. Tim

Recent changes on the billing pages - CPU hogging of poll-billing.php

Hi, I would like to start with that the recent changes look really good on the billing pages. Excellent job, I like it. Over the last few weeks minor changes have been done to these pages and I was wondering if anything was also done to the file: /opt/observium/poll-billing.php or the tables used for it. That process currently takes about 40 minutes on our environment, while I hoped that upgrading to an Equillogic with 16 SAS drives with RAID10 for more IOPS would fix the issue, while it did improve a bit, the result is the similar. Could it be that there are indices missing? Or is there something else which could be done that might improve this? I can create some indices myself to see if things improve in a shadow environment, but I'm not sure if that would break things with future SVN update's if done in production ? Hello, I`ve installed observium and it works great so far but I have a small issue. I see that it automatically makes the device names into lowercase letters. For example if you type "CoreRouter" it will end up showing as "corerouter". Is it possible to make the names with uppercase? I have a rather large network and having the names of the devices show up with uppercase would really help when browsing through observium. Thanks, Dan D.

I don't think I'm being as retarded with this one. Sorry if I am. nfsen running for a single firewall cluster at the moment, cfw.sv.domain.com. I can view nfsen's interface and see all of the data etc, so I know my netflow is working properly and nfsen can run reports on it etc. I get cannot generate graph when going to the nfsen tab directly via url options, it does not show up in tabs list otherwise. Is there something major here I'm doing wrong? IE smokeping I pointed to png files instead of RRD files :). I've tried temporary universal read write etc for testing purposes, didn't help. Ignoring down / notconnected ports

Hi - I have not been able to find this, we started trying/using Observium for few weeks. We intend to use it mostly to compliment our current monitoring software. We are impressed with it, but the main intention is graphing and helping us troubleshooting. We are monitoring large 6500 switches and we have a number of ports that we intentionally keep in the cisco notconnected state. The front page of Observium is then riddled with the "Port Down" messages. Can this be suppressed / ignored ? I hope I'm not asking a question that has been answered many times, but google fails me here - and I'm still getting around understanding how Observium functions. Smokeping integration

Hi, I have a machine named techops01, I have a directory /opt/smokeping/ that is running smokeping. cache/ has the png files etc. I've tried pointing to both, readding the host, rediscovering, nothing. Additionally, smokeping does not allow "." in the host name. I saw somebody had a patch for observium to add conversion of '_' to '.' , did this ever make it into code? I haven't seen a flag ### smokeping testing $config['smokeping']['dir'] = "/opt/smokeping/cache/"; also tried ### smokeping testing $config['smokeping']['dir'] = "/opt/smokeping/"; Its not a permissions issue, its 777 now for testing purposes. I noticed one of my devices is showing up under Ports > Customer Only thing I can find different for this interface is the desc has CUST: at beginning of the description. generate-map.sh

I tried searching around but found nothing on this. It would appear this script generates some larger network map, maybe more conclusive, I don't know. Its broken in a few ways, is this supposed to work or is this old stuff thats stuck around? I temporarily fixed a couple errors I was getting, but even so the map.dot file or whichever it dumps its initial payload into was turning up empty. Thanks, Morgan

I just did my first install of observium after a very convicing demo by a friend. However the website only loads the header (or parts of it). blank graphs

So I followed the ubuntu svn installation tutorial and managed to get observium to run... (commenting the function gethostbyname) But anyway... So far I have been able to log in to the web app and... the app has recorded all the info from the device I want to monitor... but somehow all the graphs are blank with nan values The device in question right now is in idle mode, just receiving packets from network equipment and sometimes ICMP (ping) packets. So maybe I'm doing this wrong and it needs to be in active mode receiving all kinds of requests.... but even the memory and processes graphs are blank... What could it be? Cron? I'm missing some configuration? Do I need to follow more of your documents? Hello I'm having a little problem with the tutorial. I'm following this tut: http://www.observium.org/wiki/Ubuntu_SVN_Installation because both of my machine have ubuntu installed So I have two servers, server A is IPv6 only (i have installed Observium here, ubuntu 12.04) server B is IPv6/IPv4 (i want to monitor this machine, ubuntu 10.04) both machines are in a ipv6 network with cisco equipment (routers/switches) I configured the snmp client in server B, following this tutorial: http://www.observium.org/wiki/NetSNMPd_Client_Configuration And currently I'm stuck on this step, from the installation tutorial Add a first device to monitor: ./addhost.php <hostname> <community> v2c I get a message like this "coud not resolve hostname" Having said that, I have full connectivity between the machines and I configured a hostname in /etc/hosts, so I run this command (ubuntuservers is the community name i configured in server B) ./addhost.php server6 ubuntuservers v2c And I get the error message. I only modified these variables in config.php $config['db_user'] = "observium"; $config['db_pass'] = "mypass"; (a random password) $config['nets'][] = "2001:23::24/96"; What am I doing wrong, can you help me? Force Device Type Change?

Hi all, Is there a way to force a device to be treated as a different kind of device when it is polled? I've tried changing the "Type" under "Device Settings" but this does not have the desired effect. Reason for asking, we have several UPS systems which are successfully being polled by Observium (all are Reillo units, running NetMan Plus cards). We also have another system which is running a CS121 card (in a PW9000 DPA-250kVA unit). This system is polled by our Cacti server in exactly the same way as the Riello units and we get the same data from all of them. However, Observium will not see this UPS as a UPS, just a "Generic Device" and as such will not poll it for RFC1628 OIDs. Any ideas on a fix or 'tweak' to make it think it's a UPS and poll it? SLA graphs showing as broken icons

Hi, I was wondering if SLA graphing was working, or if it is simply my installation that's borked. I'm on build 3323 and I have SLAs enabled in my config file, and I can see the SLA-XX.rrd files in my RRD directory, but the SLA tab in the GUI displays broken links. I've been testing Observium for the last few days and have over 10,000 ports in it with integration of rancid and smokeping. So far it's working fine, apart from my SLA issue. Regards, Michael

Hi All, Recently installed Observium today and very impressed so far, I have been busily migrating a boot load of stuff out of the not so free anymore Opsview into Observium all day. For my Cisco kit it's working great, unfortunately I'm hitting a few road blocks with my shiny new Brocade DC-6910 switches. I made a change to a poller include file to detect ironware / foundry switches and added the BR6910 string, what I still can't figure out is the ifAlias on the Brocades, it just comes back as 'Ethernet Port 3 on Unit 1' every time regardless of what the physical interface description is configured to. Anyone got any ideas on how to get around this one? Thanks -Dan

Since I re-enabled Observium monitoring on it (same IP address as the old one), I've been getting a "device rebooted" message every 5 minutes from Observium. trouble ignoring switch ports - update broke functionality

Hi All I have Observium running for some time and currently at [hlk@wiseguy01 observium]$ sudo svn up At revision 3310. After Observium SVN upgrade I cannot seem to ignore certain ports from Dell PowerConnect switches (might not be only those) from high port numbers I get "Device record unchanged. No update necessary." this happens currently on two switch stacks that are quite large, both 10 units single port 9/0/35 on one stack lots of ports from units 8, 9, 10 on the other stack Those cannot be ignored. I tested using ports 1/0/4 and 7/0/51 that I can ignore/unignore another port on this switch. also tried removing the switch completely and adding it again. Any pointers or ideas? Where to look for this - used to work fine. BTW I noticed to other ports were changed today - we moved a server, and changing those on a Dell 8024F gave the expected " 2 Device record updated." and were updated fine. Sensors not picking up, get rediscovered 4 times a day

My logs look like this...any idea why its not picking up? I have about 50 juniper devices, an APC device and a couple others and it doesn't seem to monitor or graph any of the sensors. I have seen some information about sensor configuration under config.php, but it wasn't very helpful. Every time the discovery runs, or maybe its the poller, not sure, it finds all these sensors for every device, but it does nothing with them. Is there a switch I need to flip? Thanks! up / down gives no warning

Hi, Observium has been working very well over the past few months and now I want to begin tailoring it for our network specifically. We use an Ubuntu install as per the instructions and had no install problems. On the overview page we get an orange warning for a non-ignored link that goes into the (Cisco) down/down state BUT NOT when they are up/down. Is this a setting, bug or feature? If it can be changed does anyone know how - I would like a warning for any link that goes down/down and up/down. I have looked through the documentation, options and settings but find nothing. I also tried [alert][port][ifdown] as a long shot. Any help would be great. Thanks Ian

One of our clients uses a very large HP ProCurve 4108gl switch as the central hub of their network. When I'm looking at traffic graphs from it for large spaces of time, I invariably see it pegged to +/- 20Gbps because of some traffic spikes during the day (e.g. Windows clients talking to WSUS and downloading their patches). If I zoom in on one of the "empty" stretches of time, I see that there is actually some traffic flowing – it's just so small in comparison that it gets flatlined by the spikes. What I'd like to be able to do is to change the graph from a linear one in the Y (bps) axis to a logarithmic one, so I can see my traffic. For example, here's the past 24 hours: [cid:5CBC68CF-394E-403F-9F59-AB51C6450F66] (The rrdtool command that produces this graph is truly impressive and only crawls out of its blue box with the last set of CDEF statements before the giant list of AREA statements.) (All graphs generated for this e-mail use the same time span on the same hardware) I know, I know, "Use the Source, Luke!", but I've only watched the commits fly past, not actually dug into the code past the config file (and this doesn't appear to be a configuration option). rrdtool_graph() is called in three places, and fortunately only defined in one. Having troubles with BGP

Hello, I'm testing out Observium for use. I have run in to an issue where BGP for 3 Peers show up as down (They are shutdown in switch configuration) and 2 other peers on another switch is showing the same thing.. Peer is shutdown on the switch.. I can't find anywhere to check ignore to have the Observium ignore the peers which are down .. It's one thing to store a bunch of numbers and draw a line, but it's a totally different thing to craft a pretty graph from those numbers. Editing user passwords

Just had a user that could not, for whatever reason, log into our Observium installation. So, I was going to reset the password, but editing the user, found nothing there to do that. Seems that there is no way for anyone other than each user to edit passwords after the account is initially created? And if that user cannot log in, they cannot do it. Cannot login after upgrade

Hello, On April 19th, I installed the last version of Observium from the Ubuntu instructions there http://www.observium.org/wiki/Ubuntu_SVN_Installation (I am using Ubuntu 10.10 server). Everything worked, I gathered a lot of interesting data about my devices, I was happy. Yesterday, I updated to the very latest version of Observium following the instructions there http://www.observium.org/wiki/Using_SVN#Upgrading_to_the_very_latest_version. After completing this upgrade, I can't log in Observium anymore and it doesn't poll the devices as specified in /etc/cron.d/observium. Today I installed the last stable release following http://www.observium.org/wiki/Using_SVN#Upgrading_to_a_specific_release_of_… that it would solve my 2 problems but they remain. Cisco Unified Border Element (CUBE) Support

I manage numerous CUBE devices in my environment. I would like to use Observium for monitoring. The CUBE deployment is essentially an IP-IP voice gateway with two (or more) dial peers. Currently, they just show as they should as standard Cisco routers. Per the following link http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/voicesw/ps6790/gatecont/ps5640/w… there are some applicable Cisco MIBS for monitoring the voice elements of these devices, they appear to use the same voice MIBs as other Cisco devices, such as the AS5xxx. I do not know if it is possible during discovery/polling to see if voice is enabled on the platform or not and show/hide the applicable polled data? I would have no issue opening up a CUBE device for testing if anyone is interested. Thanks, John

Hi All, Just to remind everyone we have a Jira installation for reporting bugs. It's helpful when reporting things as it means I don't forget about them (which I have a habit of doing). It's a lot easier when I get some time to just look at Jira and clear out a couple than trying to remember what things people have reported via email. http://jira.observium.org We also have a Fisheye installation at http://fisheye.observium.org which gives a nice interface to our code. If you're reporting an error with a graph on a particular module, it's often helpful to send examples of the rrd files and an entry from the database (if you know how), as otherwise it can be a nightmare for us to test. adam.

Public Graphing Display

The FAQ's and Configuration state that I can display graphs without requiring a username or password. This is great... but... here's the question I've made the appropriate modifications to config.php, however, what URL do I use to get to the public graphs? I tried looking at the URL of generated images, however, that doesn't seem to be correct. So you can understand my goal: I run a colocation company and require my customers to be able to review their bandwidth statistics. I utilize WHMCS and would like them to be able to view their graphs within their portal, thus, I've added the IP address of my WHMCS server as an 'authenticated' IP in config.php I'm thinking, once I can understand how to display the graphs, that I can use the port id as a variable to develop a custom module to display the graphs. So my questions are: After permitting an IP address to be able to view graphs without username/password, what is the syntax of the URL for displaying these graphs? It would be awesome to be able to integrate a custom range selection, but I'd really just settle for static generation of past 24 hours, past month, and past year.

New install problems

missing data in graphs.

As a newbie I am sure I am doing something wrong, but don't know what. I have Observium installed in new install of Ubuntu 10.04 and it is seeing the snmp for users from the edge router at each of 7 locations much of the data comes in such as tem and CPU load but no carts are created anyplace. The forms for the graphs do open but all are without any data lines. The graphs have a -nan listed for data. I think it's worth pointing out that if you're planning to do any development, you should come to our IRC channel, #observium on freenode. It's usually a lot quicker to get questions answered, and you might save yourself a lot of time by not copying the wrong bit of code. adam.

Sorry if this is a newbie question I have installed Observium on a fresh Ubuntu 11.10 installation. Everything has gone absolutely perfectly. I used apt-get and installed all of the required packages as per the Ubutu installation page. It is running OK and has discovered the devices on my network. However, there is no information on any graphs. Not a single one. All the ports are correctly detected and it reading IP addresses and arp caches and most other information including CDP. No information on any graph and some are simply saying draw error. rrdcached working?

Hi, I discovered Observium a few days ago and I really like what I see so far. However, I'm running into some issues trying to scale up to the size of my network. The first issue that I thought I'd bring up is rrdcached support... is it actually working? I've got an rrdcached instance running but as far as I can tell Observium isn't making any real use of it. I switched to a TCP/IP socket for rrdcached and I can see a TCP/IP socket being opened but no data or commands are ever sent across the socket... Can anyone clue me in as to what I may be doing wrong? I'm running rev 3149 on a Fedora 16 system. -- Jeff Ollie

negative values on netstat graphs

Here is exampele of negative values drawing on graph while values are positive is this intended? http://demo.observium.org/graphs/type=device_netstat_snmp/id=33/to=13363435… Also on my installation graphs doesn't show negative lines, until you press "hide legend", but preview [day,week,month selection] are correctly drawn.

SNMP Location can't have forward-slash

Hi, Just noticed a small issue, when an SNMP 'location' contains a forward slash (/) then the link doesn't work in the location's menu, for example: With a location set to "THN/TFM-10/C5" on the device, the link is auto-generated as "http://<server>/devices/location=THN%2FTFM-10%2FC5/" which then results in the error: Not Found The requested URL /devices/location=THN/TFM-10/C5/ was not found on this server. Possibility too acknowledge items in Overview

Hi All We see alot of jabber on the Overview page that is not really necessary and makes it hard too differ important information from trivial information. We would like too be able too Acknowledge items in the Overview so that it is not spammed with ports that are down for known reasons. Perhaps you could comment on the Ack and/or mark with a category (maintenance, power outage etc etc). Additionally I think that keywords in descriptions could generate different results in the overview (like ports are aggregated but for states). So that ports that are marked for installation and waiting for link should be hidden when down and shown green when up so that the provisioning team notices this and can take action. I see somewhere you can define a regexp that will look at the interface description and when true would inverse the up/down relationship.
