Milton, I disagree, for example, how do you set up a rule to apply to all devices (past and future)? It appears you cannot, however, you could in the past and that are what all the examples show. I like observium quite a lot, however, its these things (like documentation that is not current) that can really frustrate a user. Instead of it being a text entry like the test conditions, there is now an expression builder, but the fields and operators are still the same. That should be easier that before. There is a problem with these examples, they don’t work for modern Observium. Now that observium uses test conditions and “association rulesets”, the documentation is broke and you cannot implement these examples the way they are shown. It would be REALLY helpful to have updated documentation. I am stull struggling with checkers because it is all trial and error. IPSEC Tunnel graphs - Def Error

Hi, I we predominantly have Cisco devices which is monitored via Observium. I have noticed that there is an issue showing graphs of IPSEC Tunnels. I am not sure when this started to fail but I am on version 20.8.10644. I have checked amongst several different devices and they all show the same error. This is tested on ASA5506, ASA5525, Cisco 1921, Cisco 2911 and Cisco 4331. All graphs shows 'Def Error' [cid:image007.png@01D6829C.C6E0D220] How do I resolved this issue? I have already tried running the discovery.php -h all, and I have even upgraded to 20.9.10652 and still having the same issue. Enabling MIB and custom values support

Hi all, I do have two questions with different topics, but I didn't want to send multiple emails. Hope you don't mind. First question is probably very simple, however I cannot find out - I need to collect information from Cisco devices using " CISCO-NETWORK-VIRTUALIZATION-OVERLAY-MIB". This MIB is part of Observium. How I will "activate" collecting these MIB values from a device please? I do have almost all modules active and I don't know how to add MIB to a certain device (not all devices, just 3 of them). Second question - as more and more devices (such as Arista) are giving up on SNMP turning slowly to REST APIs or similar methods, is there any way to push information to Observium using its own (python/php) script? I would imagine any kind of value mapping to graphs and then collecting values from scripts or JSON file.... Thank you for your time and support. Connect to device icon?

Hi, I was sure at one point there was a "Connect to device/terminal" icon in Observium, but either I'm mistaken and it was never there or now so buried I can no longer find it. Whilst hostnames and/or IP addresses are shown in Observium, they generally have active links attached to them to take you to other screens in Observium, this makes it hard to copy these into a Browser to gain access to the device's GUI. It would be nice to have a "Connect to device" icon next to the IP/Hostname that will make it much easier to click through to the device's own GUI. We recently started using Ubiquiti's UNMS monitoring system which is good for Ubiquiti devices, but pretty lousy for anything else. UNMS has a "Copy to clipboard" icon next to each IP address making it really easy to then connect to the device's GUI. I like the "Copy to clipboard" method rather than a URL link, as this is generic and you can then copy and paste into a browser or any other application. Regards Chris Macneill

Alert Check - Monitoring Cisco Stack Redundancy

Hello, I was wondering if anyone could help me write a better alert checker to determine if a Cisco stack has a missing member. Occasionally, one member of a stack will fail, but the stack continues to operate so it's not in a "down" state. I would like to get a notification when that happens. I am currently monitoring all stack ports, but any unused stack ports show "down" as well, so I'm looking for a better solution. Observium upgrade

observium docker/Kubernetes install

Hi all I wondered if anybody has setup observium inside a docker container or even inside a Kubernetes cluster? If they have: are they running it fine? How does it preform? what’s the usage like? Only reason I’m asking if I’m looking sadly to move all our VMs (50) into smaller containers (10) and running Kubernetes as most things can be done by containers I’m just yet to find anyone with an observium container? I'm using the Subscription version, so maybe I remember from the days before we paid and were using the CE version. In the Subscription version under the Device Cog the "Connect via" options are replaced by a "Show Tech Support" icon, but nothing in there to connect anywhere. Looks like feature has somehow dropped off Subscription version, I'm a full administrator so should be able to see anything the system has to offer. Currently running 20.8.10631 (stable). Reducing WiFi Error Alerts

Hi, We get a lot of WiFi error alerts from Ubiquiti devices clogging up our event log. Most devices in Observium have a number of Sensors listed which allows thresholds to be adjusted to receive only genuine issues and reduce the noise level. Ubiquiti WiFi devices have no sensors listed for each device, so apparently no way to adjust thresholds? Regards Chris Macneill

Syslog alert checker functionality / OID "group" alerts (FC Port Monitoring)

Hiya! Two questions or requests for some problems that just showed up. 1. Syslog with additional alert checker functionality We use observiums syslogserver for most of our systems and syslog alerts of course. Problem is, we can't set a delay. Like 1 system, 4 reports in 10 Minutes = alert. Is there any way this could be implemented or is already planned for observium? Main reason is, that we have some systems that need to alert, but only after a specific threshold. Otherwise we get flooded with senseless alarms. Waking up in the middle of the night because of a false alert sucks a bit :) 2. Building OID groups / FC Port monitoring We need a check for our FC switches to report, if a port has the wrong config and runs as FL instead of F. MIB and custom OID are no problem in this case, would be OID 1.3.6.1.2.1.75.1.2.1.1.3 - and it works. BUT I need to add a custom OID for every port, so 1.3.6.1.2.1.75.1.2.1.1.3.1.1, 1.3.6.1.2.1.75.1.2.1.1.3.1.2 etc. and create an alert check for every OID. Ghost devices in alert checker

Hi I created a new alert checker today and it seems I have 2 ghost devices showing up now. Neither of the other alert checkers have them showing up. Could there be some issue in the db or can I find out which devices it picks up? When I click on the entitys it just says: No valid device specified A valid device was not specified in the URL. New Junos Pulse not detected when updating to version 9.1R6

Hi, We upgraded a Junos Pulse VPN box to a newer version and since the device is changed to a Linux Device. Our service provider contacted also Junos but they couldn't help they said in the first place. Anything you can do to help getting the right discovery again? Versions of Observium running in production - Stable, in LAB latest CE. hello, As the standalone Observium server grows with more and more devices, rules, checkers, etc. The possibility of losing that all due to hardware failure would make me mad. Is there any best practices of making the backups of Observium data to make the emergency restore more faster than from zero ? Thanks

I would like to have more information in my email alert messages. - Adding the names to DNS or hosts file does not currently give enough information. Hi Your solution does work for changing the name from IP address to hostname. (In the picture below I removed the device from web interface and readded it so the history got deleted.) What I can see is that the Device name is now in 3 places where previously the IP address was: Email Title, Entity and Device. As we also have very many network devices that we want to monitor then we think that adding all those IP addresses with hostnames manually to the DNS (or hosts file) is not very practical, especially if we need to to it also with future devices. Maybe there still is a possibility that we can change the email contents with some other fields: adding Description, Location or something like that? Someone maybe knows where this template config file is located? We have Observium running on Ubuntu 16.04 and are monitoring different Windows servers and also some network devices. Below there is a pic of an alert for a Mikrotik wifi device that has gone down. We added the device to Observium via IP and therefore we also see the Device name with the IP address. Sadly we do not remember all the devices via their IP, but rather their hostname or description. Varnish Agent not working

SNMP + Syslog Question

I am interested in merging SNMP + Syslog data from the firewalls (SonicWALL) I manage. With this data, I would like to accomplish two things... 1. Monitor for security events and send alerts if / when appropriate 2. Generate and send regulatory (PCI) compliance reports...this includes performance stats such as Up Time / Down Time as well as security stats (e.g. Intrusions blocked / detected)...these stats would ideally be displayed in some form of chart At present, SNMP data is being collected by Observium and Syslog data is being collected by Graylog. The question is where would it be best to merge the data so as to accomplish the goals outlined above. Graylog has the ability to search its data and generate report widgets (i.e. tables / charts) which in turn can be placed on a Dashboard. If I take this approach I would need to send Observium's SNMP data to Graylog but I've not been able to figure out how to do so. Observium has the ability to ingest Syslog data and alert on it but it's unclear on how I could use it to generate tables / charts for reporting purposes. I would appreciate any thoughts / recommendations on either of the options listed here. -- Randy Schultz

Hi there, As I remember, when polling a port it will also get VLAN information. Is there a way to don't get VLAN information ? VLAN is disabled in DiscoveryModules and PortsPoll Module. Reason: We have some units with very few interfaces, but a large amount of VLANs. Sensor "friendly" name in alerts?

We've got a generic alert set up for "status_event equals alert" however in the alert email there isn't anything that has the decoded/friendly text for the sensor in question. For example a UPS switches to battery power, the Entity is "Output Status" and the graph in the email shows the status going from "2" to "3" but that isn't useful. If I look at the device in the webUI it does show that "Output status" is "onBattery". CDP Neighbor detection for devices with names longer than 40 characters

Hello, Due to campus naming conventions I have run into several switches with names longer than 40 characters. Normal operation and monitoring is not effected, however Observium does not recognize the neighbor. I believe this is due to it wanting an exact name match, and since the name in observium may be 42 characters, it does not match to the truncated 40 character CDP name. Is there a way we can either manually define a neighbor connection, or have the algorithms ignore any characters above the 40 limit? Perhaps by checking for IP address matching as well? Issues with Vivotek Cameras

When I add a Vivotek camera to Observium, works great for one, but when I try to add another one, the System name is the same (in this case h.264 mega-pixel network camera) and it will not add. The name of the device is different, what Observium "pulls in thru SNMP" is the same. Already got device with SNMP-read sysName (h.264 mega-pixel network camera) and 'snmpEngineID' = 80005BA9017F000001 (jq-office-lobby-cam01.bcp.cat.com). I see in JIRA that we are supposed to be able to add more devices with the same system name, but this is not working for the version I have of Observium 20.4.10371 (stable). It is my "belief" that Vivotek is reporting back it's system name to SNMP incorrectly. I do not really "care" if the System Name is wrong, but I cannot add another camera at all. This is what is in the camera configuration and I don't see any other location for a host name. [cid:image002.png@01D63DA5.852215B0] If I do an snmpwalk on the device: SNMPv2-MIB::sysName.0 = STRING: H.264 Mega-Pixel Network Camera Observium is pulling what the camera is giving .... So is there a way to change this in the database or a way to say add it anyway? Graphs and date preset

Hi, When selecting all devices and sorting by device-group (URL =/device/group), there is an option to select a specific graph and use a date preset. That is all great, but the value does not show When selecting the group using /group/group_id I can see the values, but can't use a date preset Does someone know how to get this working? Help creating an Alert Checker

Hello, I am unable to figure out how to create an alert to notify me when our VPN boxes go into failover mode. Observium recognizes the event, but I would like a notification. The following output is from the poller. Observium behind azure app proxy

Hi, I am using observium walled behind an azure application proxy. This mainly exposes an AD authenticated endpoint publicly and proxies all allowed users to the real host. This has been working fine with observium community edition. Now I am switching to the enterprise version of observium and get errors on the dashboard saying 'unauthenticated' for each widget. Note that some of the widgets randomly appear working, then become 'unauthenticated' on a refresh. Also, when on the 'broken' dashboard, refreshing the page sends back to the login page. I can switch back and forth between the 2 versions (community & enterprise, with same config.php) and the issue appears instantly with the enterprise version. How can I diagnose the issue ? Is there any hint on what is going wrong ? Observium Feature Request - Summarizations for Alert Emails

Hello, I would like to make a feature request for alerts. Over the weekend a significant portion of campus lost power, generating an overwhelming flood of device down email notifications. Would it be possible add an option to hold off sending notifications until the current Alerting process has run, and then send a digest or summary of all devices sending alerts? Retain historic data

Dear Experts, Hope all is well with you. Need your valuable advice, I have the below situation. # Physical DC movement done. # Change in Transit provider and change in IP address of AR's. # Polling was disabled before the physical move for AR's and N/W devices. # After physical move by mistake polling was enabled for the AR's, this has caused the loss of historic data captured for AR's by overwriting new data. Ignore "Status" sensors

It would be awesome if we could turn alerting for individual "Status Indicators" off the same way we can for normal sensors. We have a few problematic hosts with sensor issues, for example a dead RAID battery on a machine that is getting decomm'd in a few weeks. Unfortunately this means that every day (re-alert interval) we get alarms for these hosts for the same issues. I'd love to be able to just turn those specific Indicators off, without having to remove the whole host from that Alert Checker, as we do still want to know if anything else is wrong with the box. Same with the reoccurring alerts, we want to leave those on for all devices. ________________________________ Spencer J. Device group membership in alerts?

I've got a usecase to have the group names that a device is a member of passed down to the alerts, specifically Pagerduty. On the PD side, I can route incidents based on arbitrary details, and if I had group membership I could say "If device.groups contains "Network" route to XXX", instead of having to build a unique alert check for every group. The mocked up SQL query is SELECT group_name FROM groups WHERE group_id IN (SELECT group_id FROM group_table WHERE entity_type = 'device' AND entity_id = ?); Any chance that information can be made available? Can anyone please assist me, I am trying to make a backup of my Observium installation to move it to a "bigger" system / machine, I installed the application to see how it worked and to test features, needless to say that I love it, and have subsequently set it up to monitor my entire WISP network. However, I unfortunately did not pay much attention to the system's specifications, as it was not initially intended to be a permanent deployment, not knowing what to expect or that it would turn out to be such a wonderful tool. Please could you advise on a step by step procedure to enable me to make a full backup of the installation / database / configs in order to migrate it to a more future proof system, bearing in mind that my Linux experience is very limited. SNMP Max Repetitons enabled - some modules takes longer time to poll

Hello, We recently enabled max-rep to improve our Observium installation. And it did reduce polling time for most modules. But we see some module had significant increases. Specifically the poller modules for cisco eigrp, cef and cbqos and the bgp poller also seems to have increased somewhat. Has anyone seen this behavior ? Where should be begin to look? The Jira issue is https://jira.observium.org/projects/OBS/issues/OBS-3006 For now, that adds just graphs to Status section. PPPoE Interfaces Deleted

Hi guys, Please if anyone could offer some advice or guidance I would really appreciate it. I recently deployed Observium in my network for monitoring purposes, everything is working great, better than ever expected, except for the following: Each time a PPPoE client interfaces reconnects, the previous data is deleted, interface is deleted and the graphs and usage data start fresh from the time of the new connection. Is there any way of setting up the Observium installation to retain previous session data and usage and just have it "carry on" recording data each time the PPPoE session reconnects? Is it possible to use a device's sysContact (Either from SNMP or an override) to tie that to a specific observium contact, or is that for the email transport only? My use case is that I want different devices to go to different pagerduty integrations, and the only way I can see to do that right now is to build different alert checks for each set, with the correct PD "Contact" associated with that checker. Hi I am trying to send alert mail for any device down/port down status only when it down and in an interval. But getting a problem that Observium send the alert report with all down port for an active device which overwhelmed my inbox. Not able to connect to SVN / update

I just renewed my observium license, which was out of date for a while. Trying to run svn update now but can't make a connection to the server from my Observium machine. I can connect fine from a machine on a different network, which is weird. IP of Observium machine: 216.27.95.80 Username: tempeh-170154 Tried both svn and a plain CURL, with and without --username and --password. Any thoughts?

How to diagnose failing ldap

So I had the server working with mysql login, but I'm struggling with getting the ldap authentication to work. I copied the example out of the instructions, but every time I enter the username/password, the website just resets. I tried going to http://fqdn/debug, but it just tells me that the cache is disabled in the config, which it is. Unfortunately I can't find any debug logs, or entries in any logs that would help to isolate the issue. Default port for web-access

Hello everyone, I am totally new to Observium and has found the app is very useful. I installed Observium using the automated method, first on a VirtualBox to test out the features. So far everything has worked for me (yay.) I am planning to install the app on the actual production server, running Ubuntu 18.04 server, latest updates and all However, on the production server, we have already Freeradius which use mysql and phpMyAdmin to maintain the database. These are using the default port 80 I tried to find where I can change the default port at the installation but I could not find anything. If I change the default port in the /etc/apache2/ports.conf (and subsequent in the virtualhost), would that change my Freeradius server default port as well? My second question, is there a command line that I can use to reset the admin username/password? If we forget the admin password, how could we get back to the program? So if anyone here has run both engine on the same server, please shred a light on this for me? Thank you all you guys, and sorry if this question is a nob! Question regarding switch Ports

Hello! We have this nice status-graph in observium: [cid:image001.png@01D61338.1A381E30] Is it possible to get an output of a procentage of used user-ports? In my example I have 17/27 = 63% utilization of ports. I dont want to count in ports that are shutdown, often trunk or sfp-ports. Vlan interfaces /port-channels and so on is also counted as UP, but I dont really care about that. Regards Fredrik
