Good evening everyone, I've been trying to configure Observium with a forms based SSO solution. My reasoning for this, is that I'd like to minimize the attack surface for Observium when published to the Internet. As Observium supports groups, I thought it would be extremely beneficial for clients to view their throughput at anytime from anywhere. I was curious if anyone in the community is using pre-authentication, or if you're publishing Observium directly to the Internet. I'm not as familiar with Apache and PHP, so hardening the service through pre-auth seemed like a good first step. Unfortunately, I can't quite get pre-auth to work. Observium uses forms based authentication, which is hard to capture on the platform I'm using. Do we know if this is possible? A better question, is pre-auth even necessary here? Aside from HTTPS, iptables, firewalling, and locking down SSH/root, what other steps do you take to secure your Observium server? Do you think that allowing Internet access is unwise at this time? Strange issue with BGP sessions on Juniper MX104

Hello, We are running Observium professional 0.16.1.7407 and we have an issue with BGP session discovery on a Juniper MX104 (dual RE), running discovery against the device displays the fact there are numerous bgp sessions but not a single session appears under the device in the Observium WebUI. [ALERT-CHECKER] Alert to pick up on physical failure of disk.

Hi there Have gotten some hints at IRC but can't really wrap my head around on how to set it up. Yeah, I know I'm probably stupid. But I can't find a complete list of all commands available and it doesn't complain if I feed it something invalid. So it's really a guessing game. =/ So the checker needs to do something like: if status of physical_class('storage' or 'hrDeviceDiskStorage') != 1 send alert Possible? Please give detailed instructions if possible. memory showing 0B/0B (0%)

Hi All, not sure if its a bug ive found or something ive done? all our memory sections are showing 0B/0B (0%) however the graphs is actually being populated with data every 5mins ? attached a screenshot showing a mikrotik switch we monitor also attached is a windows machine we monitor, i it showing the same for its physical memory any ideas? simon

System Running Very Slow

Hi, Since upgrading to the latest release with the new interface, the system is running extremely slowly. Installed on Ubuntu 14.04 with 12 vCPU's & 4GB RAM. It worked like a dream before but can now take up to 30 seconds to load a page. Upgraded with SVN. What have I done wrong? Many Thanks, Eddie

Device Bits Graphing error message

Howdy, I’m running the community edition on Ubuntu. All the graphs work except the traffic graphs (bits). I get the standard “Draw error”. I don’t get any errors polling (other than a MIB not being supported for engineID). The devices are all Mikrotik routers. I put an &debug=1 on the traffic graph URL and discovered an error all the way at the bottom: “command returned 1 (ERROR: Unused Arguments “” in command : AREA:inbits0#B6D14B:ether1-wan Rx: )" The full text is here: http://pastebin.ubuntu.com/14490188/ It’s unclear to me if this is actually causing this one graph (on all my systems) to fail but so far there is a trend from spot checking. Alert Emails sent to exchange

I am working on setting up alerting. I have the subscription version of Observium ( version 0.16.1.7407 [stable] running on CentOS 7). I am stuck on the email alerting piece. What settings do I need to configure in sendmail for my email alerts to get sent to my email on our internal exchange server. Anyone have any idea how this needs to be set up? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

pages slow, maybe nginx instead of apache

Hi All, I wanted a view on what people think about using nginx instead of apache for obsevium? ive just managed to change apache to nginx (had to change htaccess to get it to work, but got there in the end) and it seems a little bit quicker but not by much I’m having an issue where when the server is polling and i want a graph or load up the page, it seems slow and takes forever! ( about 10 seconds ) if I load the panel when its not polling, the pages are quick, but i poll every 5mins, and it takes the full 5 mins to poll all our devices, so really no room to wiggle... if the anyway i can speed this up? would nginx help at all? my server is virtual based, 12gb ram, 4 virtual xeon 2.2ghz cores, 80gb virtual hard drive regards Simon

Hello, I just purchased the subscription version and am looking into setting up Alert checkers. How do I get an alert checker to run? I was referring to documentation and looked the DEMO and it looks like the checker will determine a pass/fail. it’s not “broken” in the sense that CSCO officially considers multicontext snmp the “by-design” method (and I have the TAC cases to prove it). remember, snmp *works* which means it’s for grouchy old [grey|neck]beards. netconf & shiny-api-disaster-of-the-week are supposed to rule the new agile! world! of! devops! 95th percent billing

Hi, I just want to clarify the burstable rate calculation which should work as below according to wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burstable_billing#95th_percentile) : “ Bandwidth is measured (or sampled) from the switch or router and recorded in a log file. In most cases, this is done every 5 minutes. At the end of the month, the samples are sorted from highest to lowest, and the top 5% (which equal to approximately 36 hours of a 30-day billing cycle) of data is thrown away. The next highest measurement becomes the billable use for the entire month. “ Is observium applying the same calculation on BILLING feature ? Is it possible to download RAW file in which has sample of every 5 minutes ? Regards, chanty

ALert on Vlan change

Not receiving email notifications. Has there been a change in Alert system I need to know about?

Hello, I recently updated my Observium installation; I'm now running 0.16.1.7473. I haven't changed any configurations. I followed procedure, as far as I know: polling was finished, I did the 'svn up' followed by './discovery.php -u' and everything looked fine. However, I should have just received an email both when a port I'm monitoring went down, and about half an hour later when it recovered. Looking through the alert log, I see the entries that say 'Alert notification sent' followed later by 'Recovery notification sent'. I didn't receive either notification, there's nothing in the mail queue, and maillog doesn't show any attempts. This was working perfectly before my update. I'm afraid I don't remember which version that was, but it was from about a week before I saw comments in the mailing list about the change in layout on the front page. Just wondering how hard it would be to implement the following features, please le tme know if these already exist and I've just missed them! 1) Close window button on the hover popups. I think the pop ups are great but I find sometimes they don't disappear, a small X button on the top RH corner would be fantastic! 2) Adding AND and NOT to the Device/Entity filters It would be fantastic to have a little more flexibility in the filters used for Alerts and Groups etc. Would it be easy enough to be able to use AND and NOT statements? Recent update beaks Rancid for Cisco ASAs

Hi, We have recently updated our version and the generate rancid script is now using the wrong type for the Cisco ASA devices. The type used for the Cisco ASA should be "cisco", it has recently changed so it sets the type to be "asa" This causes rancid to fail with an unknown type. Can this be corrected? We are using rancid 3.1. Observium: 0.16.1.7396 (rolling) Regards David

Updating Enterprise Edition and Alerts

I’m looking at updating to the latest stable release, my current version is 0.15.6406. I updated my staging instance to 0.16.1.7433. When looking at the documentation I didn’t see anything new, but in the change log it looks like some changes have made to alerts, do you have documentation on this? —Jeff

SFP sensor alerts

Hi All, What is the best way to suppress alerts for Transceiver TX Power generated when a port is admin-down? cisco-entity-sensor mib has a default minimum value of 1mA, which is a perfectly valid minimum value under normal "up/up" conditions, but if the port is admin-shut it will switch off tx power, which is ok for admin-shut. Same situation for RX-power. Is there a way to take the admin status of the port in account for this kind of sensor readings? (ASR9k, IOS-XR) Thanks, Martin

Port Errors Showing for Alert-Disabled ports

Hi, Not sure when it started, but we now seem to get “Port Error” alerts on the main page for ports which are set to have their Alerts disabled, for example: [cid:image001.jpg@01D1494E.A318C000] On the device in question, they are indeed ‘No’ under the Alerts toggle: [cid:image002.jpg@01D1494E.A318C000] There are a large number of ports like this on our network with IP PDUs and similar, all of which have 10M/Half links and exist in a state of near-constant input errors as a result. This is of no concern at all and should be ignored (hence the toggle). Any suggestions? Is the Alerts toggle broken (for this feature on the main page) or is there another way to shush these, it’s kind of making the main page list a bit defunct ☺ Cheers all! UNIX agent Postgres versions

Hi everyone! I was in the process of configuring the UNIX agent and I found (as written in the documentation too) that the script only supports Postgres version 9. But after experimenting a little bit I realized that the script works perfectly with the 8.4 version. I was able to test with an 8.3 which was working as well. So maybe the script should be changed to enable any 8.X version. Anyway I created a patch and attached it. If some of you find it helpful then maybe post the version which was working, so we can update the version string. Regards, Tylla

Problem adding devices after upgrading to 0.16.1.7393

Hi... Yesterday I upgraded my Observium to Version 0.16.1.7393 via svn. The "svn up" did follow an immediate "./discovery.php -u" and a flush of the browser cache. But when I try to add a device I get a somewhat incomplete screen. See attached screenshot. Is this a bug or did I do something wrong? Thanks for your help, Roland

Hi Adam... Thanks for your reply... I tried deleting the html folder plus svn up but it did not help... I am using FF43 and Chrome 47. I can reproduce it with both browsers... But I found a way now on getting the panel back! I reduced the browser window width to at least the half of my screen (I do have 1980x1200 resolution). Then bling it popus up. As soon as I make it wider than 50% it goes away. Reproduced it with FF and Chrome on windows. Looks indeed like a CSS issue. So after looking at this more this interface is a back plane connected to an ASA firewall module, and snmp just reports these things improperly :/ What is the best way to ignore this interface for traffic usage alert checks? Hi, Fortinet Fortigates are currently supported in Observium. However, the wireless controller functionality of the Fortigates is currently not graphed. Walking the MIBs show all the wireless data (Access points, clients, errors, bandwidth, S/N ratios) to have corresponding OIDs. Can this be information be implemented and graphed within Observium? VMware ESXI 6 - False Errors

We have recently upgraded our test environment from VMware ESXi 5.5 to 6.0. After the upgrade, we are seeing an issue where errors are getting reported on the vmk1 - vmk5 (VMkernel) ports that are connected to distributed switches for SAN access. However, there are no errors (none reported in vSphere nor the SAN). It seems to be a SNMP issue, possibly. We have a near identical production environment that is still running VMware ESXI 5.5, and the similar ESXi hosts are not showing these errors in Observium. This is a completely separate network, with a different Observium server, however both are running similar installs, and patched to the latest Professional version. We have verified using normal snmp commands that everything seems to be working as expected. We have deleted and re-added the ESXi hosts. Issue remains, but only on the vmk ports that are connected to distributed switches. The normal vmnic (vSwitch for management VLAN) show no errors. I've checked the mailing list and Googled this issue for a bit, but not finding anything similar to our issue. Anybody else running Observium with ESXi 6.0 and notice an issue with false Error reports on vmk ports? Any suggestions on what else to try? We have compared everything in the working production environment to the broken test environment, and the only thing we can come up with is that it is an issue with ESXi 6.0 and how it is responding to the Observium SNMP requests. Any guidance or direction would be appreciated. Thanks, -DB

Frontpage questions

Hi, The default frontpage with an empty array in the config.php ($config['frontpage']['order'] = array(‘’);) still shows some stuff depending on the width of the browser window. I assume a blanked out array would show nothing at all on the front page, so maybe the presence of these artifacts are a bug (see attached images)? Secondly, is it possible to have the front page only be a front page, removing the title bar as well and only showing the contents of the frontage order array? In that case, I would presume the front page would be some sort of a special URL http://$obsevium/frontpage so you don’t get locked out? My intention is to use the frontpage as a super clean NOC screen mounted on a wall. Anyone who saw an alert would login to Observium through their own workstation if they needed a deeper dive. How long until removed ports are deleted?

Happy New Year, all ya’ll Observium folks. So while everyone else is on holiday, I’m getting to do work. And this brought up an interesting question. I’m mostly removing old/unutilized 10/100/1000 line cards from a Catalyst 6509 today, and in a couple cases installing 10Gb linecards. Right now, I’ve already pulled three linecards from one chassis, and decided to force some discovery/polling of the chassis to see if the old ports will go away… and they haven’t. Doing a “show modules” on the switch confirms the line cards have been removed, but in the device port properties page, Observium still considers them “disabled / down”. Manually running the housekeeping script with the –p option says there are no ports to delete, even when I have manually gone into config.php and set the time duration to be really short (like 1*1 instead of 30*86400). Which brings me to the question… how long does it take for Observium to consider a port or ports “deleted” after it has been removed from the chassis? Discovery script crash on build 7383.

TenG port shows up as 1g

First server I would like to do is an ELK collector. Ubuntu 14.04 Logstash Rabbitmq Observium unix_agent Now how do I integrate this into my Observium monitoring? unix_agent plugin? I want to monitor things like exchanges, queues and such like. Found this(for zabbix) that I can use to get my rabbitmq stats. Collectd ping plugin graph issue

Hi, I have collectd configured in Observium and pretty much all the plugins I tried work. There is an issue rendering one graph generated by ping plugin though. Say, I'm measuring latency to "netflix.com". After measurements, the plugin sends following 3 RRD files to Observium - ping-netflix.com.rrd - ping_stddev-netflix.com.rrd - ping_droprate-netflix.com.rrd While observium renders stddev and droprate graphs, it doesn't render "ping-netflix.com.rrd". RRD command produces below error. "RRDTool Output: ERROR: No DS called 'ping' in '/opt/collectd-rrd/server-f04/ping/ping-netflix.com.rrd'" RRD dump has "value" as DS name in *ALL* 3 rrd files (as opposed to "ping"). For some reason, Observium doesn't use the correct DS name for the first file.

storage wrong on ubuntu 14.04

Hi All, I’m just wondering if any one has the same issue I’m having im monitoring a ubuntu 14.04 container running vpn software for some reason the storage in observium is showing /run, /run/lock, /run/shm, /run/user, /sys/fs/cgroup and completely missing / i use the unix-agent to get extra info out and i can see in there the following <<<df>>> /var/lib/vz/private/105 simfs 10485760 1307760 9178000 13% / none devtmpfs 1048576 4 1048572 1% /dev <<<mounts>>> /dev/simfs / simfs rw,relatime 0 0 so i don’t understand why its not showing the / mount ? i currently also monitor a ubuntu 12.04 container and that shows the storage correctly ? is it the SNMP thats the issue? or any other ideas? regards Simon

Revert to previous UI template/theme

Hello, After upgrading to rev 7360 the whole UI has changed drastically. I have to admit I do not like the new UI layout. My screen resolution is 1920*1080. Resizing the browser window down to ~1870px width or less then I get the old layout. Is there a way to revert to the previous template? I guess it should be a matter of editing some CSS to change that? Thank you.

WMI information display broken?

I actually have WMI polling working with my implementation, and once upon a time the information learned via WMI would be displayed on the (workstation, server) display. MikroTik CCR interface graphs show lower throughput

Hi Guys, I just started using Observium. Everything looks great except our CCRs are showing much lower throughput on the interfaces than they are actually passing. One interface is passing a fairly consistent 300-400Mbps but Observium graphs it as 100-130Mbps. Cacti graphs the same interface on the same device correctly so I don't think it's the router, I think I must have set something up incorrectly within Observium. Any pointers on this would be great. Storage check entity

Hi, Ive googled and not seen the answer to this. Can I check only a certain partition in the entity section? Also, if I use the storage_used or storage_free is that in megabytes, gigabytes, kilobytes, etc? I don't see any examples, it seems everyone is using the percent one but I have a single partition I want to check based on size since it's very large and percentage would be a huge variable. Thanks

Lost ability to add devices

Hello, I had my setup working without any issues (save the map), but today I couldn't add any more devices, including an existing one I removed. HDD SMART Monitoring

I have a few Linux Server running Debian which I want to monitor with Observium. Most important HDD SMART data. Ive already smartd running but like to have all data in one place (Observium). Ive have found no way to collect the SMART values, either with SNMP nor with the Unix Agent. Is there any way not documented or which I may have overseen? Regards Daniel

Hi, I'm interested in the professional edition to activate alerts, but I didn't understand exactly what it's possible to configure. I have 2 questions about them: 1) Is it possible to configure checks only every 5 minutes, or is there some way to configure some devices to be polled for example every 30 seconds only for some specific check? 2) Is it possible to monitor and set alerts only about snmp checks, or is there some way to configure monitor and alerts about tcp/udp query? SNMP Query AIX Host

However, in conjuntion with IBM AIX, I got some problems: Using SNMP, I only get very basic information about OS level and network interfaces. There is no data about cpu, memory and storage usage. Hello, I set up Observium to monitor a RPi device with Unix Agent and RPi script. I see the hardware sensors from RPi on the Observium interface, however all of them show zero values. When running /usr/bin/observium-agent on the RPi, all sensor data is displayed in the dump, but when I try telnet RPi 36602 from the server, the sensor data in the dump shows 0s. How to shush alarms for sensors that lie...

Hi, The recent changes to the homepage layout have placed more attention on the summary statistics (alerted ports, alerted sensors etc.) which previously were not as visible. A positive side-effect of this has been the setting of more 'appropriate' manual thresholds for many of the less important sensors, to tidy them up. It has revealed one issue though, which I'm not sure how to work around. Take the following example: As you can see, the (unrealistic) dBm being reported by the Cisco chassis is stuck in a 'warning' state, despite having alarms disabled, the threshold on manual and thresholds set well clear of the 8.1dBm which it is reporting. (This port actually has a copper-converter in it, hence, the dBm is just rubbish spat out by an adapter which doesn't understand copper) So despite my best efforts to silence this warning, it still persists as a 'down' sensor, on the summary page showing up in red. (Not ignored, but actually down). We have quite a few of these adapters as well as a large number of voltage sensors (again, courtesy Cisco entity SNMP crapness) which are being reported as zero volts. These are also set to 'ignore' but continue to show as 'down' on the new summary homepage, some examples below: So - Does anyone know how I can totally and completely ignore/hide the broken sensors like these? Hi Adam, I am all for a flat design, which is the modern thing today (apparently:)). Some thoughts from me. Background: Does not make the site look good. Sorry. Have a color as previously, or maybe something like the grid background from before (probably a year ago). Icons: Removal of icons, maybe mostly in the device page makes it hard to quickly identify what you are looking for. (reading is boring). Right panel: I see some use for this. But should also be able to disable. Device page: On some resolutions it seems to create three rows, which make the right side too cramped. Had some more thoughts earlier today, but too late now to remember all :D Are there any plans to move completely to bootstrap 3? Hi All, this is a bit of a daft question, I actually deleted one of our bridges on our mikrotik switches, and had to recreate them, DOH! the observium, then discovered the new bridge, but deleted the old bridge (marked as deleted)? now i have no graphs with old data in them for the new bridge :( can i join the new bridge and old bridge ports together in observium so i can see the old graphs in the new bridge? regards Simon

Layout & Style Changes

Hi All, Those of you running trunk and updating regularly might have noticed some layout/style changes in the past day or two. We've been running the old "shiny" style for about 3 years and thought it was about time we updated it, and have opted for a more "flat" design. Simplifying the stylistic elements has made it a bit easier for us to do certain things, since the old style was a little clumsy on things like horizontal boxes (check out the docs side bar for proof!). We've also added a wide layout for screens of ~1920 pixels wide which we plan to move some data too. This can already been seen on the /device/ /devices/ and /ports/ page, where some data, graphs and search forms are moved to the left hand pane. If anyone has any suggestions on what should/could go in that pane on various pages, now is the time to suggest it. Similarly any suggestions on the new styling should also be made now, before we move on to something else! :) Thanks, adam.

Observium and PHP7

Good news everyone! PHP7 is out and promise great performance to all PHP-applications. I tried it out this weekend on my Observium-installation and it did not disappoint! I have a rather large Observium and some of you that runs very large installations may have noticed that the web UI can get a little slow when rendering all the stuff from a large database. In my case the overview-page loads in about 5s and some of the more heavy pages like /devices/ takes about 7s to load. Well after upgrading to PHP7 my page loadtimes are now down to <1.5s for almost any page and atleast <2s for the heavy ones, I got a 2-3x performance boost! If you want to try it out I made a quick guide on how to run Observium on PHP7 here: http://blog.best-practice.se/2015/12/vastly-improve-observium-performance.h… Note that I don't know if everything in Observium is fully compatible with PHP7, I tried as many features as I could think of with no problems, however I have not tried the billing-module. Hi all, I have just enabled OSPF between a Cisco 887VA running c880data-universalk9-mz.154-3.M4 and a Cisco 3750 c3750-ipservicesk9-mz.122-55.SE9. broken app (apache/mysql) integration

Hello, I have some problems with the 7274 version and the apps. Especially with the mysql and apache app. Mailgraph seems to work fine, the others are not tested. The app script of mysql/apache seem to run fine, if I telnet to 36602 I get output which seems valid to me - and is similar to a release where apache is working. I have no working version of mysql for comparison at the moment. I think I narrowed to problem down. New alert options

Hi, After upgrading to the latest Observium (pro) I've noticed a lot of new alerting destination options. Just curios. * Are they all implemented or just in UI? * If any are activated, how do I configure them? We have internal email to SMS gateways, would it be possible to create one that uses a specific SMS template? I'd like to keep my sms messages short and don't mind creating one myself. When I looked at the code last time it didn't seems to be to much trouble, but perhaps it easier know when some of the code might be written? //Anders

Deleting and re-syncing includes didn't work, though I was able to get it to run successfully by swapping these two lines in update.php include_once("includes/definitions.inc.php"); include("includes/functions.inc.php"); get_obs_attrib is defined in 'includes/common.inc.php', but that is only getting included into update.php through 'includes/functions.inc.php'.

I just attempted to upgrade to release 7273 and update.php fails to run. It gives no output (just return code 255), and logs nothing to update-errors.log or any other log file. My php skills are pretty weak, but a bit of "got here" debugging lead me through the following. includes/update/update.php 21: include_once("includes/definitions.inc.php"); #bailed on this line includes/definitions.inc.php 513: $rev_old = @get_obs_attrib('current_rev'); #bailed on this line I wasn't able to track it down any further than that because I couldn't even seem to get get_obs_attrib to execute. As a last ditch effort, I also tried commenting out all of my config except the absolutely required pieces, but it still failed in the same way. Is anyone else having this problem or have any ideas?

There are situations where we would like to manipulate the data with a script of our own based on triggered alerts and recoveries and instead of mucking around the DB by hand having Observium write out the alerts to a file would be the easiest. Not alerting (probably user fail)

Hi, We've just finished migrating some of our monitoring targets to an additional instance of Observium, everything is polling fine and all the historic data etc. has been moved OK. The only thing which remains broken is that none of the alerts are actually sending their emails. They do show as being in an alert state OK, for example: However, no actual 'Alerted' time is ever recorded - and no email is ever sent. The sendmail element works fine with: sendmail -vt < testmail.txt The test contains the correct FROM and DEFAULT from the config.php in Observium and this delivers fine. Problem is, it was a very long time ago that I originally configured Observium alerting on the first box and I'm probably missing something stupid. Relevant config sections below: Both of these sections are identical to the working system they were copied from, which works fine. The postfix config is also identical to the working server and I'm confident postfix is OK as the test from it are fine: myhostname = OBSERVIUM.x.y alias_maps = hash:/etc/aliases alias_database = hash:/etc/aliases myorigin = /etc/mailname mydestination = OBSERVIUM, OBSERVIUM.x.y, localhost relayhost = 1.2.3.4 mailbox_size_limit = 0 recipient_delimiter = + Can anyone assist by pointing me at the switch I've obviously failed to turn on, or let me know what additional debugs I can provide to help track this? It seems that someone has modified your cron jobs to no longer be run as root, since your rrds were created by root and svn has no ability to change them. You need to work out where the poller is run from. It should be /etc/cron.d/observium Adam. Recently upgraded from 69xx to 72xx after we renewed our license and it broke all of our RRD's, resulting in the "Error Drawing Graph" issue. Running this "./poller.php -h <hostname> -m ports -d" gives me two noticeable, but unobjectionable to me things: SNMP_STATUS[TRUE] o Device status Device is reachable by PING (8.28ms) and SNMP (81.63ms) RRD CMD[update /opt/observium/rrd/hostname/status.rrd N:1] RRD RUNTIME[0.0012s] RRD STDOUT[ERROR: opening '/opt/observium/rrd/hostname/status.rrd': Permission denied] RRD_STATUS[FALSE] and this at the end of the results: Log file '/opt/observium/logs/observium.log' is not writable, check file permissions. So clearly some type of permission issue but not sure what happened during the upgrade that would have caused this. Arista Light levels reading

Hi We are trying to monitor the light levels in fibre ports in our Arista switches but looks like it is no managed properly if we compare with a Brocade router. See attached the screenshoots for each device. For Arista, we see the "DOM TX" and "DOM RX" entries taken as "Power" but in Brocade they are taken as "dBm". I can provide the database output if required. I can see differences in the sensor table for sensors from Arista and Brocade devices. Any advice regarding how to fix this? With RH 6.6 and 6.7 (I've not tried earlier) I've found that putting realStorageUnits 0 in snmpd.conf (and obviously restarting the daemon) appears to provide a fix. Hi!, is anyone using external authentication with kerberos?, I have an old version (4586) running without issues with sles11+apache+kerberos but trying to run a current release (7203) on the same host, it's like apache doesn't accept the user/password pair (keeps asking for them). Alerting - match multiple ASNs ?

Hi, What’s the correct syntax for an entity match which will match a selection of ASNs? I need an alert checker which will look for a specific set of ASNs and alert for any BGP session being not-up. Currently for our iBGP we use: [Conditions] bgpPeerState ne established bgpPeerAdminStatus notequals stop [Device] * [Entity Match] bgpPeerRemoteAs match <ourASN> This works perfectly. Now – what I’m after is that I need a new checker which will match eBGP ASNs like 174,3356,2914,5580 etc. all in one rule (the ‘important’ ASNs, for want of a better term). I have tried a selection of things but I’m obviously missing what the logical ‘or’ element should be in this case, as all my attempts at using multiple ASNs within a match just result in zero matches. Hi everyone, We've just updated to revision 7236 and got the following error. -- Updating database/file schema 251 -> 252 ... (db) done (1 errors). Cisco ASA - inaccurate traffic for one specific interface

Quagga with SNMP support.

Hello, Does anyone have a experience with snmp support in Quagga on Debian 7/8? I installed Quagga with SNMP support (smux or agentx) and configured Quagga to use snmp, but Observium doesn't see anything except an AS number. In Properties > MIBs section there are a couple of errors like: - bgpLocalAs.0 1m 28s ago SNMP error - .1.3.6.1.2.1.25.3.3.1.2.196608 (608 to 619) SNMP error On the other hand, in a similar configuration in VyOS everything works fine. I'm not sure if it depends on patched quagga on VyOS or a misconfiguration in my environment. Regards! Gabriel

My reason was that "someone" (svn?) created a .index file in the MIB Directory, which caused snmpwalk to die: root@horstname:/opt/observium# /usr/bin/snmpget -v2c -c '***' -Pu -OQUst -m SNMPv2-MIB -M /opt/observium/mibs/rfc:/opt/observium/mibs/net-snmp 'udp':'horstname2':'161' sysObjectID.0 sysUpTime.0 add_mibdir: strings scanned in from /opt/observium/mibs/rfc/.index are too large. count = 136 MIB search path: /opt/observium/mibs/rfc:/opt/observium/mibs/net-snmp Cannot find module (SNMPv2-MIB): At line 0 in (none) sysObjectID.0: Unknown Object Identifier (Sub-id not found: (top) -> sysObjectID) sysUpTime.0: Unknown Object Identifier (Sub-id not found: (top) -> sysUpTime) removing the /opt/observium/mibs/rfc/.index file fixed the glitch - does anybody know whats the purpose of these files and where do they come from? Regex in an entity match not working right

Hi All, I'm trying to match ports with the name port-channel1 through 19, and the "match" keyword isn't doing what I want. What I think is correct is "ifName match port-channel([1-9]|1[0-9])" However that gives me 0 matches. If I change it to something like ifName match port-channel*" I get all the port channels, so it's matching the device properly, but for this alert checker I just need port channels 1-19. Any ideas? I've tried a bunch of combinations and nothing seems to work right. toggles and pop ups have stopped working

Hello We've recently updated Observium (now 0.15.12.7230) and enabled SSH and the on/off switches are not being shown and the date popups don't work. If I browse to it on http it seems to be fine. I've checked the apache config and it looks identical, any thoughts? monitor tmpfs storage

Hi All, just moved our RRDs to tmpfs storage, and WOW I noticed a speed difference, not only in the graphs, but also in the IO load should of looked at http://observium.org/docs/persistent_ramdisk/ in the past DOH! however i’ve just noticed the observium isn’t showing it as a storage mount? can observium monitor actually monitor it at all ? also I’ve set my limit at 10GB as the server has 12GB of RAM, and the RRD folder is currently at 6.8GB bit of a stupid question but what happens if I’m close to the limit? as i knackered? more RAM server? regards Simon - Hestor Ltd

Alert Threshold for CBQoS drops

Hi, Is it possible to have alert elements/metrics which use data collected from CBQoS, like drops for example? Reason for request - we would like to get alerting for certain types of port (CORE for example) where QoS is performing drops. Currently (in another system) we poll a global statistic which gives us the 'total' number of drops per chassis or LC, but this does nothing more than point towards a chassis or line-card. A human then have to pick their way through the CBQoS stats to try to see where it was (if it was big), which very time consumptive. The statistics and framework all appear to be in place within Observium, just need to know if there are some metric conditions which can use CBQoS as a trigger, like ifCBQoSDrops_rate > 10 for example? Hello, Yesterday after upgrading observium (like everyday morning) we got hundreds of alerts. It seems that observium could not connect to any machine using SNMP - I checked this from console via ./poller.php and every server was unreachable, so I had to rollback to the earlier revision. CBQOS does not appear to work under NX-OS

Hi there, I have a Cisco Nexus 7k running the NX-OS 6.2 train, and I've noticed that while Observium picks up on CBQOS for interfaces, there is no data being graphed. Observium does detect the class-maps/policy-maps, but no results in the graphs. There are errors on one port that should be picked up, but I'm not seeing it reflected. What can be done? BTW, I'm using the subscription version, latest stable (0.15.11.7203). -- Stephen

Zenoss Integration Sync

Has anyone every integrated Observium and Zenoss together. Zenoss is another networking monitoring platform, but the platform could use a more friendly GUI. The Observium GUI is very nice. Please let me know if this is possible. I believe that Observium and Nagios integrates with one another, but our organization uses Zenoss. Thank you.

Device check and down alert question

I have noticed that I see down notices in Observium often when the snmp check fails (I have only seen this when checking servers (Windows/Linux). The device is up and a ping/icmp check would see this but because the snmp check had a problem I get a down indication. Sometimes it has to deal with the snmp service on the host being checked hanging or crashing, other times I have seen load or congestion cause it. Is there an option or would it make sense to add a feature that would check snmp first and in the event of an error fall back and do a ping/icmp check to see if the device is up or not? It would be beneficial to see if the server is up and get a notice about a snmp check failure. I could also see a check flow that would check snmp first, if it errored it would check with a ping, if the ping returns wait for the next snmp check before sending the notice or marking the device down. Observium delete the interface and create a new one (with the same name). The Question, is it possible to detect it and make a down up event out of it (and a mac change)? Webpage Display

I upgrade to 0.15.11.7224 (30th November 2015) today and noticed that my webpage doesn’t display widescreen anymore. Both the normal and widescreen display the same way. Disable CDP neighbour discovery?

Hi, Is it possible to disable neighbour discovery via CDP but still leave it enabled for LLDP? The reason for asking is that we are a 100% LLDP shop, but some equipment run both CDP and LLDP. When looking at the tab "Neighbours" of such a device the neighbours are listed twice, one with protocol LLDP and one with protocol CDP. We would like to only do neighbour discovery via LLDP, if possible. I've looked through the options files and the documentation but haven't been able to find a setting to disable CDP. GeoLocation not correct

Hi - Not sure if this is an Observium issue or not, but in all the time I've used the community version, I've never had this problem. My screen shot is here: http://imgur.com/D9waqhG I have 3 servers. Two in TX, which show up accurately, and one in Atlanta, which shows up in the middle of the Atlantic ocean. Observium shows its location as "Unknown" my snmpd.conf is as follows (with XXXXX marking non-relevant info) syslocation Atlanta, Georgia rocommunity XXXXXX sysname tsundoku.XXXXXXX.XXX syscontact scott.a.davis(a)gmail.com I have other servers with similar snmpd.conf on that map showing up fine. For syslocation, I have also tried Atlanta, Atlanta, GA, etc ... Nothing changes. Any reason why this would happen? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Just wanted to say thankyou for adding support for Custom OIDs. Using a combination of this article http://www.maartenmoerman.nl/?p=649 and this one http://awesomeadmin.blogspot.co.uk/2009/11/monitoring-cisco-wireless-contro… I was able to add graphs to track how many clients are on each of our individual access points. So far I think it's working, even if it is a pain to calculate which AP MAC address translates to which OID....

Our instance just detected about everything on our pretty extensive network BUT we have a couple of items showing up as GENERIC DEVICE thoses are Dell 6606 PDU and Dell 10000w UPS. Since the pdu are just rebranded APC and the UPS rebranded EATON is there a way to make thoses work ? thanks

I see I can create custom contacts, but I don't see a way to associate an alert check to that contact. Am I just missing this? I saw an old post from adam saying there was no way to do it in the UI but that was a few months ago. I'd really like to define a destination email address for specific alert checks in our use case. The instructions for configuring the MySQL application at https://observium.org/w/Application/MySQL are unclear about where the database user must be created. Do the user create steps need to be done on every host running MySQL that you want to monitor, or just once on the Observium server? I assume that it's the former, just looking for clarification. What could cause this? And how can I troubleshoot this? I already tried to delete a few from the mentioned entries from the database, but it recreates them and still returns the errors. Debugging rsyslog

I have a number of devices on separate VLANs to my Observium server. They are configured to send their logs via syslog to Observium. I have firewall rules in place on our router to allow this traffic between VLANs and I can see the traffic being passed in firewall logs. However, the log messages never seem to make it into Observium. How can I go about debugging rsyslog to see whether the logs arrive correctly at the server and are correctly processed by rsyslogd?

Arista "sensors" module taking a very long time

Chaman, Are they actually down? Meaning not being used? Or are you saying they are being incorrectly reported? So if they are actually down and you are asking how to NOT see the down ports in your listing: when you are on the GUI and you are looking at the Ports of a specific Device, click under Quick Filter you can hide different ports based on their status and one of the option is 'Hide Down'. The downside is that it doesn't retain and I haven't found a system wide setting/preference. If this works for you, what you could do is submit a feature request to make it a global setting not just a Quick Filter. But you really do not want to delete ports that are down as then you'll have to add them later when they become in use. front page editing

Hello All, I want to keep the default layout of the front page with one change: replace the map with a traffic graph. When I tried this using the [frontpage][order] line (removed map from order and put in a custom graph, included EVERYTHING else) , the "Devices,Ports,Sensors" table at the top diapered. Hello, We have users who have billing and groups permission but when we launch /opt/observium/housekeeping.php -b, the users loose their rights. It seems the problem is linked to this log : 1 entity entries in tables 'entity_permissions' for non-existing devices will be deleted [y/N]: Indeed, billing and groups doesn't be directly linked to devices. Monitoring Snom phones

Hi, I'm trying to add several Snom 710 phones. The documentation says they will accept SNMP requests (http://wiki.snom.com/Category:HowTo:SNMP). However, I can't add it from Observium even if I enter my installation's IP address as trusted in the phone config. No special, dedicated actions performed to launch Observium beside of manual installation of RRDTool and few requires dependencies. Setting Location

Is there a way via command line to set the Location of a device? For example, in the GUI you click on a given device and hover over the Gear in the far right. Then click Properties. Under the Device Settings tab there is a Custom Location. This is the location I would like to set. I ran an SNMP Enabler tool and enabled, set and added 100 devices today to Observium. Question about Map Locations, Geocoding and SNMP

Hello There, Here's the situation: Last week we changed our Geocoding API to yandex, just for the sake of testing. After that, our map Locations looked really funny. Then, we changed back to mapquest and now our map shows just the Atlantic Ocean. Before that, we had no Geocoding API on our Observium config. Our Locations were all being retrieved from the SNMP Config (sysLocation) from all our devices. I also tried with "$config['geocoding']['enable'] = FALSE;" and with "$config['location_menu_geocoded'] = FALSE;" but I still get the ocean. So here's my stupid question: How can I go back to our first Status, where all Locations are retrieved per SNMP without Geocoding and our Map shows back the Devices as we had in the Setup? New Observium install showing text where PHP should be?

Hi, I've just followed the Observium install instructions and I have a strange issue with Observium's PHP files. I'm not sure if this is an Apache issue as I don't use Apache and installed it as the instructions said, but I created a phpinfo file and it ran fine! UNIX-Agent on remote client

Hi All I have a server that is running Observium with Unix Agent and everything is ok. Recently I installed a second remote server and is a SNMP client on my observium. Does per-user permission exist in LDAP?

Now that I'm LDAP authenticating to my domain, am I completely restricted to using auth_ldap_groups to set permissions? In the UI, I can go to User > Edit Users, drop down the list to see my domain users, but when I try to apply changes to these users (setting Global Read, or Normal user), I am redirected to the Observium User Management screen with no visible changes to any user account. There's no notification to tell me what went wrong or that editing LDAP user permissions is not possible. After switching to LDAP, Observium no longer provides authentication errors, and I'm getting something to the same effect when trying to edit users. Clicking on a user in my level 10 shows me that this user is an administrator, but users in my level 1 are showing disabled. The drop down list shows the same level 10 users as disabled as well. /debug doesn't help since it reloads the page. profile_sql doesn't seem to show me every SQL query being made. Then I see the side effect of the of the duplicate entries with the fdb table because the poller processes are running so slowly they are stacking on top of each other. So I have some kind of performance issue. One strange thing, I only have 45 devices I?m polling, yet the port count under the Port menu says I have 44859 ports. That must be a miscalculation of some type or my database is messed up somewhere. Not sure if related or not. Going to continue to try the poller manually and see if I can figure out where the slowdown is. I guess something caused your poller processes to get confused, and they ended up running in parallel, not unthinkable when the same part of the poller process runs for so long, 74 seconds for the fdb-table module. If you don't /really/ need this data, I'd recommend disabling it. It's one of the trade offs we have to make between performance and data. If you still want the fdb data, you can force that module to be run using a less-often scheduled process in cron like ./poller.php -h all -m fdb-table Note that this will break whatever graphs (fdb count?) that fdb-table produces, but you'll still have the data in the database. adam. What boolean operators are available when creating groups ?

Hi! I've been using equals and match and wildcard (*) when aggregating together data in the group feature, however I now have to create a group where I need to exclude certain things and select others with wildcard. I am not sure this works, and I can't find anything in the documentation about it. basically I need to include all hosts with a certain hostname pattern, except a few ones with a slightly different pattern. If I wrote it in two lines, it would be like this : hostname match foo-is*.bar.com hostname != foo-is4*.bar.com Anyway way to do this ? /Jesper

Updating SNMP from v1 to v3

Hello, We have about 80 devices that we are updating from SNMP v1 to v3. I can¹t seem to find a way to do this in bulk either from CLI or from web UI. I can update the devices one by one in the web ui, if I try from the CLI with the add_user.php script it complains about the device being known. Can someone offer some insight on how I might accomplish this without changing each device individually in the UI? Thanks Tim

Hello! on the directory alerts exists the slack.inc.php. directory in the alerts there is slack.inc.php. researched on the Internet (http://www.rickheil.com/?p=35#comment-39) and also in the full dump of the observium config file and saw that there are integration options with the slack. I tried to apply them but without success. someone already managed to do this integration? Active Directory help

Hi everyone, I know this subject is touched on in the past but any help from anyone who has this working would be appreciated. I've been following the FAQ for LDAP login via Active Directory but I always come across the same error. Fatal error: LDAP TLS required but not successfully negotiated [Connect error] In /debug, I see that it connects but then inserts a line saying that Auth failed. https://doc.rotten.soy/buqar.vhdl In my Windows Server 2012 R2 box, I see this line come up in the Event Viewer: "A fatal alert was generated and sent to the remote endpoint. This may result in termination of the connection. The TLS protocol defined fatal error code is 10. The Windows SChannel error state is 10." This is one of the more recent configs I've tried. https://doc.rotten.soy/wosej.php My filtered dsquery information is... https://doc.rotten.soy/inure.tex Things I've tried modifying: auth_ldap_binddn, I've tried changing this but this doesn't seem to be my problem since it appears to connect. (Should I have some kind of special rights for this user)? auth_ldap_suffix, This one I'm not sure exactly what the string is looking for. The actual CN of a user won't include the CN=Builtin. I've tried without. auth_ldap_group, tried with and without Domain Users CN. auth_ldap_groups, tried the full LDAP path and also just the "Domain Admins"/"Domain Users" What am I missing? :( Any help is greatly appreciated in what I am doing wrong. Is it a problem with my Server 2012 install and something I need to change? Is it a problem in one of the packages installed for Observium? Cody

Setting up email alert notifications

Hi, I'm looking to set up alert notifications to help with the monitoring of the devices which we already have loaded into Observium, but having some trouble. See below attached image. This is how I currently have alert checkers set. As you can see there are 0 entities being loaded into all alert checks, despite using all devices, and I can't find anything about how to get entities to load. Could someone assist me in how to successfully set up the notifications? We have over 200 devices being monitored in Observium, adding email notifications would improve the system dramatically for us. Regards, Alex.

I’m trying to install RANCID on Observium using the doc http://www.observium.org/docs/rancid/. I get as far as Run this command to create the folder structure: su - rancid /var/lib/rancid/bin/rancid-cvs but get -bash: /var/lib/rancid/bin/rancid-cvs: No such file or directory Is there a different directory when running Observium on RHEL that I should be using to create the folder structure?

Hei, I have an BlueWalker (Powerwalker) UPS and added support for my (VFI2000 LCD) as attached. This should work for all VFIs and others with the same god dam ObjectID of .1.3.6.1.4.1.935.10.1 (which should be all EPPC manufactured units). Im not an expert in Observium or all things SNMP, but this was my work. If others find it useful, then great. PS: Dont read this Yes its yet another UPS MIB which EPPC could have done with RFC1628. The unit supports RFC1628 but not enough to be ideal ;( I didnt want to make some bastard mix of both MIBS as that's just twice the mess. Best regards /Glyn

Hi Tom, I'm not sure if I got your point :) Casa c2200 CMTS does respond with 64bit counters, for example: # snmpget -v2c -c xxxx 1.1.1.1 IF-MIB::ifHCOutOctets.77 IF-MIB::ifHCInOctets.77 IF-MIB::ifHCOutOctets.77 = Counter64: 2351994689934 IF-MIB::ifHCInOctets.77 = Counter64: 319195830460 I was wondering if it's possible to force Observium to query those. Graphs not drawing after update to rev 7172

This afternoon I updated my installation to 7172 via svn. Since then, my graphs are being drawn blank (e.g. this one of the poller duration: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/3183918/pollergraph.png. Ignore the earlier gap, it's the one from about 1630 onwards I'm talking about). I've done *./discovery.php -u* as normal and have manually run *./poller.php -h all*. I have checked /pollerlog and it doesn't appear to be running automatically by cron as usual. Any ideas? Tim

LDAP Issue

Hi - I'm trying to configure LDAP authentication according to the authentication page on the observium website, but it doesn't appear to be working. If I try a login that should work or one that doesn't work the result is the same - the login fields blank out again with no error message. Just wondering how I go about fixing this? Alternatively is there any log files that can offer some explanation as to why it's not working? I've had a look but can't find any. Thanks, Quentin

CASA CMTS - 32bit counters used instead of 64bit.

Hi, I'm trying to monitor CASA c2200 CMTS device with Observium; it gets recognized as "casa-dcts". The problem is that Observium doesn't use 64bit interface counters but 32bit for downstream and upstream interfaces. This results in gaps in the traffic graphs when traffic counter overflows. How can I force Observium to switch to use 64bit counters instead of 32bit? Thanks! Pawel

Issue with traffic volume graph for asymmetric interfaces.

Hi guys, I have problem with graphing traffic graphs for one of my Observium monitored device; problem occurs when it comes to graph traffic for asymmetric interfaces - ones that only send or receive traffic. The problem is that when such interface is queried on the device for actual traffic values the response is: for only-sending interface: Rx OID -> noSuchInstance, TxOID -> actual bits for only-receiving interface: Rx OID -> actual bits, TxOID -> noSuchInstance Those values as used then to populate corresponding RRD file which results in series of "NaN"s for INOCTETS or OUTOCTETS data stores. The result is that traffic graph plotted from this RRD is corrupted - like this example: http://i66.tinypic.com/7281fo.png Currently my Observium instance is at revision 7167. I'm monitoring a little over 600 devices with my installation. Likewise in a VM, 8x vCPU @3.0GHz, 32GB DRAM, and 32GB of swap. While CPU goes up to 85+% during polls, I don't have any drops whatsoever. Given what you describe, you probably want to add more memory to your VM. Also, what is your average and overall polling time? You may need to add additional polling instances so that everything completes within the 5min window before the next round of polling starts, which again means more memory will be very helpful. Default new ports to not alert?
