Change alert checkers/method to make alerts more flexible?

Me again. :) I love Observium, but the alerts are a bit of a pain point for me. Admittedly I don't have full, in-depth knowledge of the alerting mechanism but I was wondering why the check conditions and entities are separate. If it were possible (without completely rewriting the whole alert code) to have the entities be a part of the check conditions then that would, by design, allow us to set multiple check conditions on different entities within the same checker. See attached, I realize this doesn't work but this might help explain what I'm wanting. Since there's no entity for active used memory it's very hard to create actionable alerts for high memory utilization until it's too late and the host(s) start to swap. If the check conditions had metric, condition, value, and entity together then I could create such an alert by checking for physical memory used >= 95% *and* cached memory <= 10% (and... if so desired). On the other hand, if the metrics included the entity then there would be no need to have the entities at all? mempool_physical_perc, mempool_cached_perc, etc. I have high hopes for Observium and I'm trying to do what I can to tweak it to do what we need, but my PHP experience is limited. If I can manage to find a resource internally here at work to help out then hopefully we can contribute something back to the community if it's deemed worthy. Just some thoughts. observium says bgp neigh down, yet neigh never existed

38 some minutes ago, observium reported that BGP neigh 32.1.24.24 was down on our LAX router. yet this IP has never been configured on this router as anything, let alone a BGP neigh A quick grep of rancid history for this router never shows this address. Stumped.....

autodiscovery broken

Hi, just upgraded to r6310 and I think autodiscovery is broken. Neighbors found via CDP/LLDP gets added to DB but poller fail to poll them on first try. Debug output attached for a newly autodiscoverd device.

Graph / No Auth issue

We've enabled SSL on our Observium server and now it seems like all of our port graphs are broken. They show "No Auth" and clicking on them takes you to the "you're not allowed to view this graph" page. We've disabled the SSL site and reset apache, cleared cookies and used different browsers. Created a new level10 user and nothing seems to work. CDP Neighbors broken?

I'm having an issue with Neighbors / Map missing entries on a Cisco device. It's a 3750E stack running 12.2.55SE9 and it has always worked properly before. I'm not sure when it stopped updating but I've updated to the latest SVN build and it doesn't help. Observium shows 12 entries, however if I do a show cdp neighbors from the switch itself I get ~3 times the items. Any idea on what's going on? Hi, I'm trying to figure out how to generate aggregate graphs. I've found the way to do that if I use "blabla:..." however I have already my description : "test test (blabla) test test". I did some work on the port_description_parser but non of them worked for me. How can I catch the "(blabla)" in there ? now I can see its configured as Notes. Alerts for OSPG/IGP Changes

Are there any plans to add an alert checker for OSPF/IGP Neighbor state changes? The BGP alerts checkers are great, however I'm looking for a similar thing for IGP. Alternatively, Does anyone know of a solution for alerting IGP neighbour state changes? I have 100-200 routers I would need to monitor. Thanks in advance, Ben

How to define graphs used in the Application page?

Hello Observium Overlords, I’ve gotten an Observium Client working for a new application that we’re running. For some reason, when I click on the Application Name under Apps, only three graphs per server are shown. Additionally, I have not figured out how to tell Observium which graphs I would like to display on this “Application Overview” page. Can someone guide me to the right place? All I’d like to do is select which 4 graphs to show up on my main Application Overview Page. I’m currently running Observium 0.14.11.5987, and am using the MYSQL, BIND, and NTP Observium scripts, in addition to our home grown script as well. Thanks for any assistance, Ricardo

Ubiquity not detecting correct os or version

Hi All, I’m having an issue here with a few of our UniFi Access Points and Observium Observium detects most of our AP’s as UniFi but for seem reason two of them as being detected as AirOS ? I have no idea why it is doing this! They all have same Firmware and OS installed so why is it detecting it as AirOS instead of UniFi ? I have even compared snmpwalks and they are both identical (oversally data is different, but names, models, etc all the same!) Also ive noticed the correct ones for UniFi, aren’t detecting the firmware version correctly either ? its showing one point as 3.1.12 when infact I’m on 3.2.10 Any help where I should start looking or even ideas for me, would be very helpful Regards Simon

not getting alert email notifications?

Hi All, I have been using the alerts check for all our servers and broadbands fine for months! then outta the blue last week its suddenly stopped sending me emails? the last email i have shows 'Observium Professional 0.14.11.5993' at the bottom of its header and was on the 21st Nov? I can see in the Alert Logging messaging saying Alert Notification sent and Alert_Notify but i never get them? where would be the best place to check or has someone changed a line in the SVN by mistake ??? because i see a few changes related to alerts NOTE: we use a mailcleaner for spam etc… but ive already checked there and the emails don't even hit the server at the time it says it sent in observium? Hi I've started you use Observium mand must say I'm very impressed :-). Very useful and comfortable tool I have question regarding the autodiscovery feature. I read the do here , http://www.observium.org/wiki/Device_Autodiscovery, and one of the condition is that sysName and device name must be same, or resolvable. In our scalable design all over the world it is very difficult, cause there are about 80 domains and strong of the domain itself takes about 20 characters, so we use only hostname resolvable via /etc/hosts. We also cannot use DNS, cause AD DNS is processed by the other department ( in Asia :-) , and it would take a weeks to synchronize it. So the question is, how can i workaround the auto discovery without same sysName and the hostname ? As far as get it, sysName only contains the domain extension of the hostname. we have about 300 routers/switches, so we want to discover them automatically. many thanks Pet

Alert checker for active "Used" memory? Alert for load average?

Hi all, I'm trying to set up some more proactive alerts for my hosts and either the mempool options for alerting are too generic or the docs are out of date. I want to have an alert checker triggered for active used memory, does that exist yet? I'm not talking about total used memory, which includes buffers and cache and is caught by mempool_perc for Physical Memory, but the active used memory (See "Used" memory in attached screencap). I can't find any way to make that happen and that would be much more useful than having an alert that includes buffers and cache in the tally. If I were to create an alert for mempool_perc >= 90% using "Physical Memory" then pretty much 100% of my hosts would alert because of buffers and cache being included. I'd also like to catch memory utilization issues before systems start to swap out, so I'd like to avoid having swap usage be the trigger. Is that possible currently or perhaps is it on the to-do list? :) Something else that would be great is to alert for load averages. I know someone else was asking about this a few months back and it wasn't possible at the time, so here's another vote to get it added. Sometimes we have processes get stuck in I/O wait and the only way to catch when this becomes a real problem is with a high load average since processes in this state don't drive up CPU. Currently running 0.15.2.6274. Thanks! -Hogan

I'm guessing he has no rDNS. I would probably make static entries based on their IP address and network segment. For example ap-ams-10-11-12-13. Helo, Is there a way to see in a port aggregation which ports are involved on a HP 5830 switch on a HP 2920 the information is shown in the interface? See the example for a 5830 switch. Cisco ASA 8.3 IPsec Graphing issues

Hi I have two ASA's I graph in observium , one running 8.2(5) and the other 8.3. The issue I have is that on 8.2(5) the IPsec tunnel graphs all work 100% and everything is picked up but when trying to query the 8.3 version I get no graphs for the ipsec tunnel graphs. Is there anything specific I need to do to get the 8.3 ipsec tunnel graphs working ? php time zone issue

Hi there, I'm having an issue with the time zone settings in PHP that are causing the dates and times to show up like in the screenshot below. [cid:image002.png@01D04603.E5407F80] After searching for a bit I found a thread that mentioned that the time zone needed to be set in the php.ini file (/etc/php5/cli/php.ini). I changed the setting and restarted apache but the date and time are still showing incorrectly in Observium. I even restarted the sever to no aval. Disk IO not graphing?

Hi, I've got an issue with Observium build: CE 0.14.11.6000 The Disk IO doesn't seem to be graphing any more?? Using snmpwalk I can get the mib for it: HOST-RESOURCES-MIB::hrSWRunParameters.95709 = STRING: "1.3.6.1.4.1.2021.13.15.1.1.5" It seems that none of my hosts have it working for a while; case for both FreeBSd and Linux. The rest of the graphs are fine and are updating properly! Running the discovery.php manually the output for diskio is: UCD Disk IO : .... Module [ ucd-diskio ] time: 0.0205s The poller shows the diskio is being polled but it seems no data is returned. Has anyone got any suggestions? Config files are same and haven't changed at all... Hi All, Quick question, probably a simple answer to be far I run the discovery.php every 3 hours and all the time i see this in the Event Logs Processor updated: index (NUM), mob hr, descry Unknown Processor Type is the a way of disabling these messages? i currently use WMI to get the processors and os on a few of our windows machines to get the details and stuff, and these are the machines i get these messages with Regards Simon

Dear Mike, This is still not working for me. I have upgraded, polled, unchecked and rechecked the override box but still no joy. This is the line in the config that works perfectly for the snmp devices that correctly report HEX as their location. $config['location_map']['HEX'] = "Harbour Exchange Square, London Borough of Tower Hamlets, London, England, United Kingdom"; And this is a screen shot of the node as requested is below. As you can see the location of the device does not then reconcile to the full address following a rediscover. How to setup alerting for Checkpoint Firewall failover

The Checkpoint MIB is able to pick up which firewall node is active and standby in an HA cluster and I was wondering if anyone know what the conditions need to be for the Alert Checker to monitor when this state changes ? Are these entities that match the alert check filters and simply aren't polled for whatever reason? Storage usage with RAID

Hi all, in my Observium the storage usage of an hardware or software RAID 5 (megaraid or mdadm) device is shown as for example -5277% free at hosts overview page. df -h shows the correct 16% used. Any ideas how to correct this? Regards, Cyrill

no messages in event log for 2 days

Hi All Ive had no Messages appear in my Event Logs panel for the past 2 days? where would be the best place to start checking if ive got a code problem or maybe an SVN update has goofed it up? Only reason I ask this is because we have had a few devices today go on and off alot and there are no entries in the Event Log Panel of them going off and on but yet ive been getting the email alerts? An interesting issue with Cisco 2960Cs...

Hi all, This is just on the order of a 'watch out' notice. We're currently on 0.15.1.6206, but had the same issue with earlier versions and with the CE. We have 5 Cisco 2960Cs that we monitor, and all were taking horrible amounts of time to poll. Always at least 200 seconds, and often over 300. After some experiment, we discovered that they apparently don't care to talk about CEF (Cisco Express Forwarding). If Observium asks them about it, the CPU usage climbs above 60% and stays there for quite a while. If I go to the device --> edit --> Modules and disable cicso-cef, everything is fine. The CPU drops under 5%, and the poll time is 5 seconds or less. I'm pretty sure we're not losing any useful info, since I don't believe the 2960Cs support CEF in the first place. As I said, this is just a heads up. Observium is a great tool. Per-user timezone settings

Been playing w/ observium CE 14.11.6000. We have people in several timezones, currently I have the observium system configured itself for UTC, but it would be better if there was a way to have each user account have their own 'local' timezone setting so that the graphs would show up in their local timezone. Off topic rant: In case this wasn’t already obvious from this symptom, nobody should use Gmail for anything important. Some of our customers (one a google apps “partner” or whatever) have seen it silently drop mails including invoice mails etc (despite aligned SPF, DKIM, DMARC, reverse dns, and no current reputational issue). Even if anything is wrong with the message, they shouldn’t be silently dropping mail on the floor. It’s unbelievably broken as a model for handling “spam” which is what I presume they think they’re doing. It’s just about adequate for a personal searchable mailing list archive. That’s about it. Hi, I am currently using Observium on 149 switches with a total of 10173 ports. I can't say that anything is wrong with it, but the web interface seems a bit slow especially when you want to display pages with a lot of graphs. Observium is currently running in a VM with 4 xeon E5-2650 cores and 3Gb of ram. It's virtual disks are on a local raid5 composed of 10K SAS disks. Observium report that it's VM use on average 25% of its CPUs with spikes at 40% when the web interface is heavily used. The disk I/O doesn't go past 150 ops OUT and rare spikes at 50 IN. Anyone could advise on what kind of hardware or software tweaking could help speed up the thing ? Are they special requirements/tunnings for the rrd storage or the mysql database ? Monitoring Logs

Hello everyone, I'm trying to setup observium to monitor logs but i'm having some issues. I've configured rsyslog and i've followed the instructions at http://www.observium.org/wiki/Rsyslog_Syslog_Server however I get the following error in observium. I've configured the following files: /etc/rsyslog.conf - added forwarding rule to observium rule aswell as the following. The spool files get created successfully. $WorkDirectory /var/lib/rsyslog # where to place spool files $ActionQueueFileName fwdRule1 # unique name prefix for spool files $ActionQueueMaxDiskSpace 1g # 1gb space limit (use as much as possible) $ActionQueueSaveOnShutdown on # save messages to disk on shutdown $ActionQueueType LinkedList # run asynchronously $ActionResumeRetryCount -1 # infinite retries if host is down /etc/rsyslog.d/30-observium.conf - added as per observium documentation Error Message I get in Observium: No syslog entries found! This device does not have any syslog entries. Check that the syslog daemon and Observium configuration options are set correctly, that this device is configured to send syslog to Observium and that there are no firewalls blocking the messages. rrdcached worked for me! (Or "How to solve gaps in your graphs")

I was seeing gaps in my Observium graphs, so I knew that something was wrong with my system. The output from the Observium "poller-wrapper.py" cron job has statistics on how long it takes to complete each polling cycle. These are scheduled every 5 minutes (300 seconds). Here is what I found: "INFO: poller-wrapper polled 312 devices in 1142 seconds with 20 workers WARNING: the process took more than 5 minutes to finish, you need faster hardware or more threads INFO: in sequential style polling the elapsed time would have been: 21663 seconds WARNING: Consider setting a minimum of 77 threads. (This does not constitute professional advice!)" I tried increasing threads on the poller-wrapper.py cron job, but this did not speed things up. The "top" command showed me that this system was always waiting for disk I/O, which is indicated by a high value for "wa". I decided to give rrdcached a try, after reading this blog: http://blog.best-practice.se/2014/10/using-rrdcached-with-observium.html With rrdcached enabled, I am finally completing my polls with 5-minutes! INFO: poller-wrapper polled 312 devices in 51 seconds with 20 workers Yes, it went from 1142 seconds to 51 seconds, over 22 times faster! I know people have said the web interface would be slower, but from my perspective it is loading much faster now that rrdcached is saving some disk IOPS for Apache. (Disclaimer: I have compiled and installed rrdtool 1.4.9 to try to maximize speed on the web-interface) I hope this help people who are bottle-necked on IOPS from their disks, like I was. Hi, We have heavily loaded Brocade MLXe routers, and polling time is very high for these devices. The same is seen for few Arista switches (at longer distances) as well. This certainly is related to IF-MIB, trying to poll lots of data statistics for all interfaces, resulting in ports.inc.php module run time of ~150sec+. Running on Ubuntu Server LTS 14.0.1 Server is 8 cores with 24GB of memory Was working perfectly during initial install of the software. Once I let it discover all of our routers and switches (approx. 1200 devices) things went downhill. Login to the cli of the server takes very long and most times will time-out. Webpage never loads. Only way to fix is to reboot the server and once it begins polling everything again...nothing is accessible. I changed the setting for php to use 3GB of memory and change the poller instances per the performance tuning guide for observium to */5 * * * * root /opt/observium/poller-wrapper.py 10 >> /dev/null 2>&1 Seems that the memory and processor are probably being consumed by the poller? Device alerts for ignored devices

Hi, There seems to be a potential issue starting with r6211 which causes ignored ports and ignored devices to show in the “Device Alerts” list. If I roll back to r6210 then it is ok again, but anything after that causes them all to pop up in the list again. Any ideas? Cheers! Billing system aggregation

Hello there, I have been using the billing system for a while now and hardly had any issues. However, it seems that one customer has an unexplainable aggregation and accurate graph data. Please check the attached png. How can the 95% value be so high? Something strange I noticed is that the vlan 44 interfaces are admin down in both devices. However, Vlan44 on e04t shows nan values and it is blue (up) in the billing system overview for this bill. Vlan44 on e03t shown instead as grey (correctly, as it's also admin down) but the values are 0, instead of nan. Am I missing something? Is this a bug? Thanks for your help. Best regards, Marco

Alert Checks - 500 error

Hello, we have been experiencing an issue with the Alert Check functionality for the past two weeks or so, I was hoping someone would have some insight. I'm not aware of any changes made to the system that would have broken it, we have about fifteen alert checkers configured which seemed to be working fairly well. We are using the paid version. Error: The "alert checks" (/alert_checks/) page presents a 500 error when loading. Log Example: [Tue Jan 20 14:52:53.641445 2015] [:error] [pid 9996] [client 10.3.15.210:56877] PHP Fatal error: Call to undefined function dbFetchRows() in /opt/observium/html/pages/alerts.inc.php on line 22 Current Version: 0.15.1.6204 The overview page indicates the Alerts are actually working (non-zero values for "OK", "Fail", "Delay, "Supp", and "Other"), it seems to just be an issue with the alert checks page. There does not appear to be any issue with the rest of the system. A fresh copy of the PHP files has no effect. ASA Graph Discrepancy

Hi all, I'm wondering if anyone else is seeing the same behavior as me. While looking at the ASA graphs I notice a couple discrepancy's with the the Remote Access Sessions graph. Attached is our graph and cli output.The SSL VPN Session and the Clientless seem to have the colors flipped, but also I noticed the values on the Clientless have negative numbers. Hi, I am in the beginning phase of using Observium. I have everything set-up and working. No problems so far. One feature I am missing is Java JVM Monitoring. In your Bug Tracker I found the following ticket: http://jira.observium.org/browse/OBSERVIUM-554?jql=text%20~%20%22JVM%22 In it you mention that this should be implemented using unix-agent. This is perfectly fine by me. I have implemented a Java application which is run by unix-agent and retrieves data from the JVM using the JMX protocol. I have graphs set-up and so far every is running ok. There is only one feature I cannot figure out how to implement. This feature is very important for me. In most cases there will be more then one JVM on a single machine. From monitoring perspective this should be treated as separate application but handled by the same agent. Is this even possible on Observium? If it is can you please point me to the right code so I can see how this is done. Thanks, Krešimir

Alerting configuration problem

Hi, I am starting with observium Professional Edition (i first installed community edition and upgraded it to pro with svn) and try to run the alerts. I have enabled email alertsin configuration. Nevertheless, when I create "alert checkers" (here a simple example with storage check), after clicking "Regenerate" this list me well the devices / entities corresponding with the check but when I look at the details of a check, I don't find anything in the list below. See screenshots for details. I had a look at my mysql database and tables "alerts", "alert_table" are empty (i don't know if it's normal). Can someone help me please ? I don't know what to check. New customer/user to Observium. So far we are really liking the product. Currently running: 0.15.1.6200 We have SNMP working on our VMWare hosts and get a lot of good data. I need to determine how to get DISKIO stats currently I just have capacity. Also there are some forum posts about getting more in depth VM info, machine info, etc. I don't see anything on how to get that up and working. Any help would be appreciated. Hi All, I'm having trouble to get the rsyslog working. I have followed the guide http://www.observium.org/wiki/Rsyslog_Syslog_Server but used the %fromhost-ip% . And rebooted rsyslog service. When I do a tail of /var/log/messages (i'm using a centos 6.4) I see the log files from my others server coming in, but none is going to the database. Hi, my name is Diego, I'm from Argentina. I'm using Observium on my home server. It's a proxmox platform running 12 containers. One of them is running openvpn+observium to monitoring remote servers of my Customers. Observium CE it's just what I was looking, easy, simple. I just miss alerting system (e-mail) when a node is down. I read on wiki that new alerting system is not on CE (yet): will be added sometimes or will be a "premium" feature? For now I made a raw "alerting" system, modifying source code. At includes/polling/functions.inc.php I added a small script into poll_device function, just under status check. It uses php-mail and sends me a message indicating just hostname and status (Up or Down) Obviously it's hardcoded, but it works for me. Email Formatting for Alert Checks

Hi, Is there a better option for how the html formatting happens with the alert checkers? Examples are attached. I basically create a message with proper spacing, carriage returns etc. But after saving the alert (screenshot2) the formatting is disregarded. Reason for the long message is that my NOC needs step by steps instructions on how to handle something like per company policy. The email formatting also seems to take the Message field and throw it into the subject line. Shouldn't just the Name field in the alert checkers be in the Subject line of the email and then the message be included in the body? Is anyone out there doing custom email notifications or just using the default?

Map location problems after switching to the Pro version

Hello, We had been running the community version of Observium for a few weeks. I set the syslocation for each device, and when using the Google API each device appeared on the map exactly where it should. I used google instead of mapquest because when using mapquest a number of locations were wrong even though I used the exact address mapquest.com showed when I looked it up. We recently went Pro, and it's well worth the money. However, the map is no longer useful. We currently have 62 devices we're monitoring, all within a small geographic area in central Indiana around Lafayette. 61 of the 62 devices show up within a single block around our default latitude & longitude. For example, in the event log I find an entry for mulberry-sw1: 2015-01-14 09:25:00 mulberry-sw1 System Geolocation (GOOGLE) -> [40.420760, -86.890249] United States (Country), Indiana (State), Tippecanoe County (County), Lafayette (City) This is just wrong. The actual location string for this device (which has been untouched since it worked correctly for the community version) shows that it's in Mulberry, Indiana. That's even in a different county. Am I doing something wrong? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Monitoring a Geist Smart PDU....

Hi.... I have been using Observium for a while now and really like it.... Recently I added a Geist smart PDU to monitor it.....it does seem to recognise it, but all it seems to monitor is various network stats. I had been hoping it might automatically begin monitoring voltage, current, watts etc. for both the PDU as a whole and even if possible its individual outlets. It does recognise it as a Geist PDU and the inventory for the unit does correctly show it as having 24 controlled power outlets. However, there is no 'Health' tab and it doesn't seem to graph or monitor any of the electrical stats for the PDU or its outlets. I was just wondering if maybe I have done something wrong, or it it that currently the Geist PDU is not fully supported and that monitoring a Geist PDU this way is a work in progress? If it is still a work in progress, I'd be willing to have a go at getting (or helping to get) Observium to support monitoring the PDU fully, but I'm a bit lost as to where to begin. I know a reasonable amount about PHP and SNMP, but am no expert. Thanx in advance for any help. Chris Bradshaw.

@ Colin Stubbs Agreed. We didn't run a full PoC either with Observium. We deployed it and watched to see if anyone found it useful or not. It wasn't long before it was running neck and neck with our production platform, which was quite unexpected for us. We (eventually) have/had no problem paying the $200 USD out of our team budget, as production software far exceeded the extremely low cost of Observium. As you noted earlier, If the demo site included all the features of the paid subscription; I think that would be enough to show free users what they're missing. (If it's configured as a full PoC as well, it should make selling the service to their team / management that much easier.) Side Note: Adam and the team work hard on this project, so the current payment plan is quite understandable and is to be expected. Even if you add on the support element for Observium, it's still far cheaper than most paid subscriptions.(Solarwinds, What's Up Gold) (It's something like $17 USD a month for full device monitoring and statistics on all configured devices. Observium: 0.15.1.6158 Rancid WebSVN: 2.3.3 I noticed this week that viewing the network config (from RANCID) not only has the current but history. We auto-update our observium weekly. Hi, I'm a very happy Observium Community Edition user, keep up the good work! I have a Linux appliance that utilises Observium, Nagios, NagioSQL, Cacti, Splunk, etc. that runs as our Company NOC. I would like to simplify this and perhaps remove Nagios as I only use this for basic ICMP "Are you there" checks currently. EU Subscriptions and new subscription management system

Hi Guys, To get around the additional complexity complying with the EU regulations would require we've switched to a slightly more expensive, but more helpful payment provider which is now acting as a VAT agent on our behalf, usefully sidestepping all of the EU VAT issues. They also have a much friendlier and much easier to use API, so I finally got around to properly automating the subscription system. For the future to renew subscriptions, you'll need to create an account on the subscription management system and order via the button. At the moment it autogenerates usernames and passwords, but in future I'll make those customisable. You can find it at http://www.observium.org/subs/ Thanks, adam.

geolocation problems after update

hi all! after upgrading my svn version of observium noticed that the points are gone the map going to a strange location and coordinates "manual" in the geolocation option of configuration of devices. to not upgrade one by one and clear beyond coordinate option did a direct change in sql that functioned normally, it follows: UPDATE `observium`.`devices_locations` SET `location_lat` = NULL , `location_lon` = NULL , `location_geoapi` = 'google' , `location_manual` = '0'; after 5 minutes the points again appear on the map in the right way []s! -- Guilherme de Freitas Figueiredo

I have the same issue. We are running a bunch of DSLAM (Zhone and Keymile) and we want to monitor the numebr of calls, the temperature and so on (no more than 10 SNMP OID checks). How can I ask to add this kind of support? Can I write my own check files for this hardware and (if it's working fine) pull up on the main release? Where to start writing a custom check? Regards

I'm following back up to the list, in hopes that others will find this and it will help them. Part of figuring this out was to track server (the host observium is running on) utilization in terms of Disk IO, CPU, Network IO, swaps, etc. In general we had to upgrade our server to handle a higher compute load / cpu load. We had been running Cacti on the same hardware platform with about 3x the devices, polling every 1 minute and no issues. When running Cacti we also used the C based poller environment (spine). Observium requires more CPU. We also increased our SNMP time out value in the config file. This helped mitigate the issue, but at the end of the day, more CPU fixed the issue. Now the SNR (Signal to Noise Ratio) has reduced and alerts / data from Observium is considered reflective of the devices status. Once we stabilize and goto production, I'll post our hardware / os configuration along with other relevant data for others to reference. cheers and thanks to those that provided on-list and off-list usable feedback. It's a little more complex if the OS is detected as Linux, since we don't have the ability to selectively add MIBs at the moment, we'd have to add that. The basic design ethos of Observium is that everything should be automatically discovered except where automation is realistically impossible. It's a long standing and quite strict policy which is responsible for basically every difference between Observium and Cacti. If someone can write a Cacti-esque template to graph something they want, why would that not just be added as a poller module? Because it's harder? But one means only 15 people use it, the other means all 10,000 observium users get it. I've long hated the cacti method of doing things, forcing the users to either write support for themselves or find some ancient badly written templates on a forum. This just means that half a dozen people write exactly the same support, and only half of the people who need it get access to it. It's way better to spend twice as much time writing some code which can be included in the release and automatically delivered to everyone. We've a few other internal design policies that people might not be aware of, but they're not so relevant here :) adam. Subscriptions in the EU

Hi Guys, If you're in the EU and you've had (or have in the future) your PayPal payment profile canceled, it's because of the EU VAT issues I posted about last week. After the 31st of December we will no longer be able to sell to customers in the EU (except the UK) and any payments from within the EU after that date will be refused. It's not clear when or if the EU will rectify these regulations, and the workarounds I've investigated so far won't work for us. It seems that CentOS is frozen to net-snmp 5.5 and I'm don't really want to use anything that I can't easily manage with "yum". The weird thing is that I have another server with the same config/CentOS version/Net-Snmp version and I have no issues with the snmp process on that server. Enable / Disable RANCID on a per device basis

Hello everyone, I've implemented the RANCID integration feature, which has been working quite well over the past week. I'm very excited to have config diffs on the same page as the health of each device. It's little features like this that are allowing us to leverage Observium over other monitoring platforms. That said, I was curious about a related Observium feature request. Would it be possible to configure a RANCID on/off switch on the device settings page? Please allow me to clarify this further. When I run generate-rancid.php, It's going to generate a router.db for all of the devices listed within observium. While this is amazing and extremely useful, not all devices within Observium need to be added to this list. My idea is to add a switch that determines whether the device will be added to the router.db. That way, when our CRON job runs each night to update router.db, it only does so for the devices we know RANCID can log into. Again, this is just an idea I wanted to share. If you feel there is something I could do to get around this, please let me know. As of right now, I generate the new router.db myself and manually remove each device I know shouldn't be listed. Many false positives

Hi I'm trying to troubleshoot the many false positives we are receiving from OB. The system will report a host as down, yet our legacy Nagios and out-of-band Pingdom do not show the host as down. It doesn't appear that OB records in the log what specifically is making OB think the host is down. I've increased the SNMP time out value to 3 seconds (which seems very long) and that has helped with some hosts, mostly Mikrotiks. But I doubt that our Juniper MX480's (which are lightly loaded) should need such long time frame to respond. How can I get OB to report what is the actual trigger for its "Host Down" alerts ?? Are there tweaks for performance monitoring / testing ?? Thank you in advance..

set device for customer

Hi All, I have a feeling is more of a daft / random question, but ill ask it anyways Is it possible to set a list of devices for a customer in the customer view under the Ports menu? I can’t change the description of every single interface like described in here http://www.observium.org/wiki/Interface_Description_Parsing I would rather have a customer view of all there devices I understand i could create a user for the customer and assign those devices to that user, but thats not a view for myself as Admin the other issue i have is the Devices are assigned all over the place and not in one location either ? recovering upload/download figures from dumped DB file

Dear Admin, Unfortunately, I forgot to take the backup of the rrd directory but I did take the backup of the dumped mysql. Is there a way/queries to get the upload/download figures from the database? Or is there a way like MRTG to get the graphs displayed by importing the dumped DB file to the new Observium system? Unable to update polling/alerts toggles

Large 3750 switch stack, unable to update polling/alerts toggles in Observium. Seems to only update the first 333 ports. Been an issue for a while. Observium 0.14.12.6098 (stable) If you toggle just one of those high ports by itself, you get this message "Device record unchanged. No update necessary." If you toggle it with some lower ports, the lower ports will update by not the very high ports. Thanks TRAVIS KREIKEMEIER

Rancid revisions within Observium

Hi all, I'm in need of some help troubleshooting why I can't see Rancid revisions with Observium any longer. It was working for almost four months and suddenly stopped. I haven't been able to tell if any of packages changed without my knowledge. I've gone through the document below and everything seems to work. The apache logs don't show anything of concern. I've running RHEL 6.5. I attached a php debug file. Anyone have suggestions? EU VAT changes

Hi All, This is mostly only relevant to people within the EU. In January new EU-wide rules come into effect regarding the collection of VAT on cross-border digital transactions. Anyone who sells a digital product in the EU will now be required to collect 2 "non contradictory" forms of identification from every customer in order to verify their country of residence. They will then be required to charge that customer VAT at their country of residence's local rate and then pay that VAT to their country of residence's tax collection agency. This effectively means that you need to know and track the VAT rates in all 28 EU states, as well as ascertain the location of any customer before they can be given a price. You're not required to retain all of this information for 10 years, and ANY tax collection agency in the EU is now entitled to access to your company's financial records. This applies to everyone, and has no threshold. Within your own countries, you only collect VAT once you hit a certain threshold, which in the UK is £80k. Under the new rules everyone is required to collect VAT in every other EU country, even if they're not required to collect it in their home country. This also means that even if you're not required to collect VAT in your own country, you still have to register for VAT in your home country and produce VAT returns. You also have to produce VAT returns for EVERY COUNTRY WITHIN WHICH YOU HAVE A CUSTOMER. In the UK we have a government system which allows us to send a single unified VAT return for all EU countries to our tax collection agency, and they will forward the relevant data on, but I'm not sure if that exists in all countries. aggregate alert emails?

Hi, Is it possible to aggregate alert emails? When a switch does fail, it might generate thousands of alerts. For our case maybe even thousands of txt messages to a pager. Bad location - lat\long?

I put the lat/long that GMaps reports for a given location into the SNMP location. When I search for that lat\long in GMaps, it goes to the correct location. When I look at the Observium map, it's about 2 miles off, straight south. Map questions

Hi I have a couple of questions about the google map on Observium: 1. Is there away to have the map center on a point and zoom into that point to a certain level of zoom, as the default. The reason I ask is we have most of our infra-structure in a single city, and a few "interconnection / peering pop's" in other states. For normal use we would prefer that the default location and zoom level be on our core service city. 2. Is there away to have a KML/KMZ file added into the map being displayed by Observium. For example, it would be handing to show our fiber ring along with the tear drop icons that Observium displays. As extra credit it would be nice to render a polygon either Green, Yellow or Red depending on status.... Thanks

I believe this can be marked as resolved. All of our devices were listed as offline this morning, which was caused by the following: http://www.observium.org/wiki/FAQs#All_my_hosts_seem_down_to_Observium_.2F_… I followed the guide, and removed .index from the noted directory. As soon as I did that, everything started polling again. At around the same time, I also found this: http://www.observium.org/wiki/Poller-wrapper.py Our poller was set to use 3 threads, so I bumped it up to 12. After review, I found that my alert checker was now listing devices as checking in and passing the offline test. I faked an outage on a test device, which triggered the e-mail alert. Thanks again for the assistance on this. I'll have to dig into the snmp bug a little bit, but all is now working as it should. I've been working on this on and off for the past few days now, and I've had no success in generating an offline alert. The alert log shows the test as failed, but delayed. It never actually send out an e-mail. My apologies in advance, if this turns out to be user error. Thanks in advance for any time put into this. Script to discovery and poll new devices

Hello, I have a quick simple script to go through a text file and add_device, discovery it and poll it. However the only portion that works fine is the add_device. the discovery nor poller.php is actually doing what it should. however If I run the command separately outside of the script it discovers the device as well as polls it. the host name is right because I'm using echo within the script to show the name for each loop. If i use ./disocvery.php -h new that works fine and I guess it's a work around, however ./poller.php -h new does not work. below is the script I'm running. while read host do echo $host /opt/observium/add_device.php $host /opt/observium/discovery.php -h $host /opt/observium/poller.php -h $host done < Servers/dailyserverlist.txt

Sliding window in graph views

Good day, all When viewing graphs, I often find that we want to keep a specific graph open for a long period - days or weeks even, and preferably to view the most recent information. A minor issue is that when clicking on the pre-provided thumbnails for the "6 Hours", "24 Hours", et al. graphs, it opens a specific time window. If the page is refreshed after a while, it shows old data rather than current data. A sliding window works already - just that probably very few people know about the "feature". Adam and Joe, Thank you for your feedback on this. It would be nice to have a few default alerts built directly into the platform. That said, I understand that the time needed to implement something like that could be hard to reserve. As for the configuration I submitted, does the behavior of the alert seem to be correct? I was curious of up / down alerting was implemented (as the walkthrough suggests), but has yet to be verified as fully functional. I have an alert that checks for half-duplex interfaces, and it works like a charm. Observium will send off e-mails every 5 minutes about it, but I get nothing about a device status being up or down. We have What's Up Gold taking care of these alerts for now, but that's really all that it's doing. It seems on the alert settings, on the association part, if you configure more than 1 associations, only the very last one can be modified or deleted. Other associations above the last line, if you click either modify or delete, there’s no effect.

How do I set an alert so that if a switch port without a description is not alerted on? I have descriptions on all ports that I want to monitor. I can't shut the others because some should always be up. Logic: If AdminInterface and PortStatus is Down AND PortDescription = "" then Alert Me This is what I have now. I can filter things that have some form of a description but I'm not sure how to use a description that is blank. See image below. junos logical sub interface state

Hi, I shutdown all unused ports to make the alerter life easier. But after I done so, all good except ae ports sub interfaces still shows on observium as failed even though the main ae physical ports already administratively down. For instace, ae11: show interfaces ae11 Physical interface: ae11, Administratively down, Physical link is Down But observium still complain ae11.0 failed check: show interfaces ae11.0 Logical interface ae11.0 (Index 153) (SNMP ifIndex 982) How do we ignore logical interfaces when setting up alerter? Observium SNMP polling crashes various Adtran devices

Hi, We recently installed Observium in an effort to replace our aging Cacti and Nagios systems. We are running the latest code checked out of SVN (We paid the money to Adam for the Professional Version) Today we added 180+ Adtran based devices to the system. All 180+ devices began rebooting. They would become stable for a few hours and then start rebooting again. Important to note that most of these items have been in our network for 3+ years, are running recent code, and have been rock solid stable for their entire service life. Cacti and Nagios poll them every minute and have been doing so for the past 3 years. Insert Observium and the devices start failing. My initial feeling is that there is something in the way Observium does its SNMP. Curious if anyone else has experienced this or something like this. Its caused us to halt putting more devices on Observium. Ok, I added ifDescr !match *.* In the condition, seems working. Although I don¹t feel that clean about it. I would like to only care about physical interface, not logical. But I tried all snmp mibs in the mib list, none of them I found tell you it¹s a logical interface. So I rely on the pattern *dot* in junos to indicate a logical port. I think it does. ;-) Meaning, yes, it graphs the 1000v just like it were any other switch. Thus, make sure you have all your "description" entries defined in the interfaces before you discover the device. And the vEth port does not change when the VM gets vmotioned from one host to another, so stats are consistent. I'm running the Cisco freemium version of the Nexus 1000v virtual switch on my ESXi 4.1 boxen, mainly because I needed LACP uplink capability, which was not available in the vSwitch. Then I discovered that you can get SNMP stats on a per-vEthernet port (meaning per host!) from the 1000v. Sweet! The poller takes a bit longer to run on the 1000v, just like it does on all other Nexus products, but well worth having the information. Progressive search and wrong answers

Hi, since the progressive search seems to start right away and for some reason our setup is too slow/too large to get instant SQL replies the answers seem to be dropping in as the SQL server finishes and them the client will render them as soon as it receives them. This unfortunately gives answers for shorter strings later even if the search field already does seem to be filled with a longer query string. Is there anyone who has implemented some JS/AJAX fix for this and ensure the answers processed by the client are only those matching the current search string (i.e. add a "static" version/revision/serial field into the SQL select and check for that in the results)? Vlan Interface Usage Alert

Hi All, We created a Alert Checker for interface usage greater than 80%. We are seeing interface usage alerts for Vlan SVI interfaces. These don't mean as much to us as physical interfaces do. Looks like the default bandwidth on a Vlan SVI interface is 1G on our platform. Is there any way we can configure Observium not alert on vlan interfaces? Our Device Match is "os equals ios" and our Entity Match is "*" for the interface usage alerts. I see ifType is an attribute option. Could I do something like "not ifType vlan"? Override Network Location

Dear all, I have noticed that when I override the network location with a site name Observium does not appear to apply the same location details that are defined in the config.php. This means that for a site such as HEX we have two locations in the drop down menu one as unknown->HEX for the overridden device and another with the proper location that is being pulled out of the config.php. Is this desired behaviour or a bug? BW rob

What you're looking for is a netflow analyser. There are plenty of free tools you can use and I believe one is crudely integrated with observium. You're better off with a separate product though. Netflow is notoriously IO intensive and having it built into observium would be like dividing by zero. Port down and observium doesnt show same vlan traffic

Hello, I am assign my cisco switch into observium. The cisco itself connect to internet thru port 48 on vlan 2. And observium server connect to cisco port 47 on vlan 3. There are several server connect to cisco vlan 2. Here is my issue, once I unplug my internet connection(port 48). Other server traffic on vlan 2 doesn't show up on observium. Hello, By default how many times does observium check for an alert threshold and how often? Say I have an alert to send email if a machine hits 95% cpu, does it get triggered automatically if a machine hits that threshold once ? Or does it check multiple times before getting triggered? gaps in graphs

Hello, i got sporadic dropouts over all my graphs. If this happen most of my graphs have dropouts. The poller runs not longer than a minute. `Total time for all devices: 41.07s 35.17s' Memory usage 200 of 1000 MB RAM. All devices are in the same physical gigabit network. Ping is less than 50 ms to each device. Monitored are only 16 devices. Observium itself runs as a openvz container (turnkeylinux). I searched the web but does not find anything that matches my setup. billing not working

Hi All, I’m having a problem trying to create bills for ports for one of our customers… we currently monitor the ADSL routers of our clients, and wanted to see if we can get a pretty bill/graph for the PPP ports of all the routers however adding ports to the bills just seem to make the bill disappear and not work? so far I add the bill successfully, and set a quota of say 1TB but when I go into the edit tab of the bill, the quota field is empty!? also i can’t seen to add more than 5 ports? any ideas Simon

Hi Mike after the upgrade to Observium 0.14.12.6089 the Cisco WLC 2504 is no longer recognized as WLC. It is a generic device, it even removed the basic temp sensor after a discovery... "Sensor Sensor deleted: temperature wlc 0 Unit Temperature 0" I can handover you debug information if you want to. Just let me know how i can provide them :) Kind regards Basile

Spikes in 1 and 2 year graphs

Almost all of my 1 and 2 year graphs look like this. http://i.imgur.com/SnDlXz3.png I've tried several times to fix them with removespikes.pl and .php but never had any luck. Has anyone ever gotten the removespikes scripts to work in these cases? I run the command on a single device at a time and receive no output, but it doesn't fix the issue. I've also tried several of the other flags with no luck. Any pointers? Thanks! -GT

Adam, good afternoon! I have a question: what happens after the license expires. For example, buy a license, which is valid for one year. What happens after that first year? extending observium to handle custom MIBs

I have added a tree of MIBs (in the ‘experimental’ section of the tree) for my own application services to respond to snmp requests. This is for determining the health of a running service. I can view the objects using snmpwalk, and I can add the host running the agent to observium. I can see all the information retrieved from the ‘well-known’ MIBs (uptime, load, etc.) in observium for my extended agent, but I can’t see any of my own MIBs. Where do I look for how to let observium know about my MIBs so that it can show the data in a tabular or graphical format? I see the includes/polling/unix-agent/* as some examples, but it’s not clear to me where the mapping between my OIDs goes to the variables inside of running observium, so I can invoke rrdtool_create properly. It’s also not clear to me how I layout the various graphs on the page, once I have them created. If there is some documentation for that somewhere, or a particularly good example in the code to look at which would make it clear, that would be great. Thanks

Please include the following information : Contact/Company/Subscriber information What type of support you'd be willing to provide What type of hardware you use What you use the hardware for (WISP, Enterprise, etc) Additionally if you already use some other platform with your wireless kit, perhaps some screenshots and description of how you use the platform would be useful, as would any suggestions on how a wifi infrastructure management interface might be structured. We're not wireless infrastructure experts, but you guys might be! :) Depending upon the level of interest when everyone is accounted for, we might consider building specific wireless support into Observium. Full access live demo?

Hello guys I'm currently looking for a monitoring tool and try a lot of them (freeware, opensource, etc...) Observium sounds good for me, definitely. I checked the live demo and can't access to the threshold/alert options, which are the most interesting part for me. I know if you give access as a admin to your demo, your Observium demo will be destroy within 1 minute. So before paying for a pro version, is there a possibility to test a live demo as a admin user or install a "time limited full version" on my VM ? Regards, Aurélien

Control-Plane class-maps

Hi, Is there are way to get the CBQoS stats for the control-plane on the 6500 (or indeed any Cisco with control-plane policies really)? I know they are presented via SNMP as we have the stats in Cacti, showing against “CPP” which is the same name as Observium has for the Control Plane interface (after I un-filtered it in config.php). For what it’s worth, here is the table from the Cacti query: [cid:image002.jpg@01D0121F.7F26CDC0] In this example, you can see 4 of the CoPP classes, alongside one of the interface classes. We use Cacti to get the control-plane classes only (hence grey) and all the interface classes are done by Observium because it handles the dynamic changes which occur MUCH better than Cacti does. Observium sees the same interface index (19) and name (CPP): [cid:image004.png@01D0121F.497847D0] But for some reason it doesn’t attach the CBQoS statistics for the control-plane…? All other QoS stats are present, so in general it is working OK, just the CPP ones which are missing (or I can’t find them). Any ideas? Cheers! Unix Agent

I have read the Unix Agent troubleshooting section. The Observium-wide FAQ didn't provide any guidance either. I set this up within the past week. Running Community Edition, Debian Wheezy. I got one box (CentOS) setup with the Unix Agent and at least one polling worked as it's now populated with different packages, MySQL information (that's one of the scripts it setup). It hasn't worked since the first polling or two. It isn't pulling in any new scripts on the monitored box and the information it does have appears to be stale. I can telnet from the Observium box to the monitored box via FQDN on port 36602 and get a bunch of stuff back. However, the observium.log and my router shows requests going to the FQDN at ports 1 and 6556 that are refused. I don't show anything in netstat listening on those ports on the monitored box. Hi there, Does anyone have a Sonicwall NS2400 reporting CPU usage to Observium. The default settings didn't seem to pick it up. I tried adding the OID (1.3.6.1.4.1.8741.1.3.1.3.0) to the SNMP configuration in the Sonicwall, but still no sign of them in Observium. Where am I going wrong? Thanks, Paul NoSigPLS!

Adding a SNOM 320 VoIP Telefon failed

Hello, i tried to add a SNOM 320 VoIP Telephone. I saw that Observium has an include for snom devices. As a first test a bare snmp request from cli with v1 succeded, with v2 i got no response. But Observium does not discover the device with v1. DNS / host name service is working. I have read in the web that SNOM SNMP support is awful. They have their own mib, a request for "system" does not give an answer from cli. Does anybody have SNOM Devices monitored in Observium and if so, what could be the error that the device could not discovered and added? thx, ecaroh

Under Device Settings - Device properties - there is device type. I’d like to add router and switch there. Checked the mailing list archive. Nothing conclusive on how to do this. Does not look like something in a config file. Checked there as well. Is this used someplace other then he device menu subtree for grouping? Justin

Observium and Google downtime

We use the Google Map API, and it appeared that Google was unreachable here for several minutes. In that time, our Observium box ground to a halt due to all the PHP processes hanging on what I can only guess were map API calls. Once Google came back the machine became responsive again after all the processes finally cleared out.

Missing graphs?

Hello, Today I discovered that some statistics are missing. There are empty graphs since one week in all App tabs - apache, mysql, postgres, etc. There are also no graphs in tab Temperature.
