It's a little more complex if the OS is detected as Linux, since we don't have the ability to selectively add MIBs at the moment, we'd have to add that. The basic design ethos of Observium is that everything should be automatically discovered except where automation is realistically impossible. It's a long standing and quite strict policy which is responsible for basically every difference between Observium and Cacti. If someone can write a Cacti-esque template to graph something they want, why would that not just be added as a poller module? Because it's harder? But one means only 15 people use it, the other means all 10,000 observium users get it. I've long hated the cacti method of doing things, forcing the users to either write support for themselves or find some ancient badly written templates on a forum. This just means that half a dozen people write exactly the same support, and only half of the people who need it get access to it. It's way better to spend twice as much time writing some code which can be included in the release and automatically delivered to everyone. We've a few other internal design policies that people might not be aware of, but they're not so relevant here :) adam. Subscriptions in the EU

Hi Guys, If you're in the EU and you've had (or have in the future) your PayPal payment profile canceled, it's because of the EU VAT issues I posted about last week. After the 31st of December we will no longer be able to sell to customers in the EU (except the UK) and any payments from within the EU after that date will be refused. It's not clear when or if the EU will rectify these regulations, and the workarounds I've investigated so far won't work for us. If you're due for renewal in Jan/Feb/Mar or so and want to retain your sub, I recommend you do it before the 31st. Thanks, adam.

On one of my Centos server, the net-snmp process will die after 24-36 hours of running. It seems that CentOS is frozen to net-snmp 5.5 and I'm don't really want to use anything that I can't easily manage with "yum". The weird thing is that I have another server with the same config/CentOS version/Net-Snmp version and I have no issues with the snmp process on that server. Anything else I could try to troubleshoot the issue? Thanks!

Enable / Disable RANCID on a per device basis

Hello everyone, I've implemented the RANCID integration feature, which has been working quite well over the past week. I'm very excited to have config diffs on the same page as the health of each device. It's little features like this that are allowing us to leverage Observium over other monitoring platforms. That said, I was curious about a related Observium feature request. Would it be possible to configure a RANCID on/off switch on the device settings page? Please allow me to clarify this further. When I run generate-rancid.php, It's going to generate a router.db for all of the devices listed within observium. While this is amazing and extremely useful, not all devices within Observium need to be added to this list. My idea is to add a switch that determines whether the device will be added to the router.db. That way, when our CRON job runs each night to update router.db, it only does so for the devices we know RANCID can log into. Again, this is just an idea I wanted to share. If you feel there is something I could do to get around this, please let me know. As of right now, I generate the new router.db myself and manually remove each device I know shouldn't be listed. Many false positives

Hi I'm trying to troubleshoot the many false positives we are receiving from OB. The system will report a host as down, yet our legacy Nagios and out-of-band Pingdom do not show the host as down. It doesn't appear that OB records in the log what specifically is making OB think the host is down. I've increased the SNMP time out value to 3 seconds (which seems very long) and that has helped with some hosts, mostly Mikrotiks. But I doubt that our Juniper MX480's (which are lightly loaded) should need such long time frame to respond. How can I get OB to report what is the actual trigger for its "Host Down" alerts ?? Are there tweaks for performance monitoring / testing ?? Thank you in advance..

Hi All, I have a feeling is more of a daft / random question, but ill ask it anyways Is it possible to set a list of devices for a customer in the customer view under the Ports menu? I can’t change the description of every single interface like described in here http://www.observium.org/wiki/Interface_Description_Parsing I would rather have a customer view of all there devices I understand i could create a user for the customer and assign those devices to that user, but thats not a view for myself as Admin the other issue i have is the Devices are assigned all over the place and not in one location either ? recovering upload/download figures from dumped DB file

Or is there a way like MRTG to get the graphs displayed by importing the dumped DB file to the new Observium system? Unable to update polling/alerts toggles

Large 3750 switch stack, unable to update polling/alerts toggles in Observium. Seems to only update the first 333 ports. Been an issue for a while. Observium 0.14.12.6098 (stable) If you toggle just one of those high ports by itself, you get this message "Device record unchanged. No update necessary." Rancid revisions within Observium

Hi all, I'm in need of some help troubleshooting why I can't see Rancid revisions with Observium any longer. It was working for almost four months and suddenly stopped. EU VAT changes

Hi All, This is mostly only relevant to people within the EU. In January new EU-wide rules come into effect regarding the collection of VAT on cross-border digital transactions. Anyone who sells a digital product in the EU will now be required to collect 2 "non contradictory" forms of identification from every customer in order to verify their country of residence. They will then be required to charge that customer VAT at their country of residence's local rate and then pay that VAT to their country of residence's tax collection agency. This effectively means that you need to know and track the VAT rates in all 28 EU states, as well as ascertain the location of any customer before they can be given a price. You're not required to retain all of this information for 10 years, and ANY tax collection agency in the EU is now entitled to access to your company's financial records. This applies to everyone, and has no threshold. Within your own countries, you only collect VAT once you hit a certain threshold, which in the UK is £80k. Under the new rules everyone is required to collect VAT in every other EU country, even if they're not required to collect it in their home country. This also means that even if you're not required to collect VAT in your own country, you still have to register for VAT in your home country and produce VAT returns. You also have to produce VAT returns for EVERY COUNTRY WITHIN WHICH YOU HAVE A CUSTOMER. In the UK we have a government system which allows us to send a single unified VAT return for all EU countries to our tax collection agency, and they will forward the relevant data on, but I'm not sure if that exists in all countries. Bad location - lat\long?

I put the lat/long that GMaps reports for a given location into the SNMP location. When I search for that lat\long in GMaps, it goes to the correct location. When I look at the Observium map, it's about 2 miles off, straight south. Map questions

Hi I have a couple of questions about the google map on Observium: 1. Is there away to have the map center on a point and zoom into that point to a certain level of zoom, as the default. The reason I ask is we have most of our infra-structure in a single city, and a few "interconnection / peering pop's" in other states. For normal use we would prefer that the default location and zoom level be on our core service city. 2. Is there away to have a KML/KMZ file added into the map being displayed by Observium. For example, it would be handing to show our fiber ring along with the tear drop icons that Observium displays. As extra credit it would be nice to render a polygon either Green, Yellow or Red depending on status.... Thanks

All of our devices were listed as offline this morning, which was caused by the following: http://www.observium.org/wiki/FAQs#All_my_hosts_seem_down_to_Observium_.2F_… I followed the guide, and removed .index from the noted directory. As soon as I did that, everything started polling again. At around the same time, I also found this: http://www.observium.org/wiki/Poller-wrapper.py Our poller was set to use 3 threads, so I bumped it up to 12. After review, I found that my alert checker was now listing devices as checking in and passing the offline test. I faked an outage on a test device, which triggered the e-mail alert. Thanks again for the assistance on this. I'll have to dig into the snmp bug a little bit, but all is now working as it should. Tom, Thank you very much for looking at my configuration. I failed to note earlier, that I receive the same results when I change the delay of this alert back down to 0. For the sake of my own sanity though, I went back and changed it just now. I triggered a false device outage, which failed to trigger the alert. Something odd I am seeing, is that Observium is now listing 8 devices as having passed the alert check, with 464 devices still listed as never checked. As you can see from my screen shots earlier, that the alert checked never listed any devices as having been successfully checked. They were all greyed out. Script to discovery and poll new devices

Hello, I have a quick simple script to go through a text file and add_device, discovery it and poll it. However the only portion that works fine is the add_device. the discovery nor poller.php is actually doing what it should. however If I run the command separately outside of the script it discovers the device as well as polls it. the host name is right because I'm using echo within the script to show the name for each loop. If i use ./disocvery.php -h new that works fine and I guess it's a work around, however ./poller.php -h new does not work. below is the script I'm running. while read host do echo $host /opt/observium/add_device.php $host /opt/observium/discovery.php -h $host /opt/observium/poller.php -h $host done < Servers/dailyserverlist.txt

Sliding window in graph views

Good day, all When viewing graphs, I often find that we want to keep a specific graph open for a long period - days or weeks even, and preferably to view the most recent information. A minor issue is that when clicking on the pre-provided thumbnails for the "6 Hours", "24 Hours", et al. graphs, it opens a specific time window. If the page is refreshed after a while, it shows old data rather than current data. A sliding window works already - just that probably very few people know about the "feature". Adam and Joe, Thank you for your feedback on this. It would be nice to have a few default alerts built directly into the platform. That said, I understand that the time needed to implement something like that could be hard to reserve. As for the configuration I submitted, does the behavior of the alert seem to be correct? I was curious of up / down alerting was implemented (as the walkthrough suggests), but has yet to be verified as fully functional. I have an alert that checks for half-duplex interfaces, and it works like a charm. Observium will send off e-mails every 5 minutes about it, but I get nothing about a device status being up or down. We have What's Up Gold taking care of these alerts for now, but that's really all that it's doing. It seems on the alert settings, on the association part, if you configure more than 1 associations, only the very last one can be modified or deleted. Other associations above the last line, if you click either modify or delete, there’s no effect.

How do I set an alert so that if a switch port without a description is not alerted on? I have descriptions on all ports that I want to monitor. I can't shut the others because some should always be up. Logic: If AdminInterface and PortStatus is Down AND PortDescription = "" then Alert Me This is what I have now. I can filter things that have some form of a description but I'm not sure how to use a description that is blank. See image below. Hi, I shutdown all unused ports to make the alerter life easier. But after I done so, all good except ae ports sub interfaces still shows on observium as failed even though the main ae physical ports already administratively down. For instace, ae11: show interfaces ae11 Physical interface: ae11, Administratively down, Physical link is Down But observium still complain ae11.0 failed check: show interfaces ae11.0 Logical interface ae11.0 (Index 153) (SNMP ifIndex 982) How do we ignore logical interfaces when setting up alerter? Observium SNMP polling crashes various Adtran devices

Hi, We recently installed Observium in an effort to replace our aging Cacti and Nagios systems. We are running the latest code checked out of SVN (We paid the money to Adam for the Professional Version) Today we added 180+ Adtran based devices to the system. All 180+ devices began rebooting. They would become stable for a few hours and then start rebooting again. Important to note that most of these items have been in our network for 3+ years, are running recent code, and have been rock solid stable for their entire service life. Cacti and Nagios poll them every minute and have been doing so for the past 3 years. Insert Observium and the devices start failing. My initial feeling is that there is something in the way Observium does its SNMP. Curious if anyone else has experienced this or something like this. Its caused us to halt putting more devices on Observium. Ok, I added ifDescr !match *.* In the condition, seems working. Although I don¹t feel that clean about it. I would like to only care about physical interface, not logical. But I tried all snmp mibs in the mib list, none of them I found tell you it¹s a logical interface. So I rely on the pattern *dot* in junos to indicate a logical port. I think it does. ;-) Meaning, yes, it graphs the 1000v just like it were any other switch. Thus, make sure you have all your "description" entries defined in the interfaces before you discover the device. And the vEth port does not change when the VM gets vmotioned from one host to another, so stats are consistent. I'm running the Cisco freemium version of the Nexus 1000v virtual switch on my ESXi 4.1 boxen, mainly because I needed LACP uplink capability, which was not available in the vSwitch. Then I discovered that you can get SNMP stats on a per-vEthernet port (meaning per host!) from the 1000v. Sweet! The poller takes a bit longer to run on the 1000v, just like it does on all other Nexus products, but well worth having the information. Hi, Are there any plans to include billing per VM host in Observium?. I currently have Vmware ESXi hosts and I would like to be able to bill traffic per VM machine. All VM hosts are under VDS switch but observium doesn’t recognise separate ports. Thanks Dominik

Progressive search and wrong answers

Hi, since the progressive search seems to start right away and for some reason our setup is too slow/too large to get instant SQL replies the answers seem to be dropping in as the SQL server finishes and them the client will render them as soon as it receives them. This unfortunately gives answers for shorter strings later even if the search field already does seem to be filled with a longer query string. Is there anyone who has implemented some JS/AJAX fix for this and ensure the answers processed by the client are only those matching the current search string (i.e. add a "static" version/revision/serial field into the SQL select and check for that in the results)? Vlan Interface Usage Alert

Hi All, We created a Alert Checker for interface usage greater than 80%. We are seeing interface usage alerts for Vlan SVI interfaces. These don't mean as much to us as physical interfaces do. Looks like the default bandwidth on a Vlan SVI interface is 1G on our platform. Is there any way we can configure Observium not alert on vlan interfaces? Our Device Match is "os equals ios" and our Entity Match is "*" for the interface usage alerts. I see ifType is an attribute option. Could I do something like "not ifType vlan"? Override Network Location

Dear all, I have noticed that when I override the network location with a site name Observium does not appear to apply the same location details that are defined in the config.php. This means that for a site such as HEX we have two locations in the drop down menu one as unknown->HEX for the overridden device and another with the proper location that is being pulled out of the config.php. Is this desired behaviour or a bug? BW rob

What you're looking for is a netflow analyser. There are plenty of free tools you can use and I believe one is crudely integrated with observium. You're better off with a separate product though. Netflow is notoriously IO intensive and having it built into observium would be like dividing by zero. Sort ports based on total data usage

We need to view the top X ports on switches which have used the most traffic (in & out) for a given time. I haven't been able to find this view. Is there a way to see this or will we have to create a special page to view this? Justin

Port down and observium doesnt show same vlan traffic

Hello, I am assign my cisco switch into observium. The cisco itself connect to internet thru port 48 on vlan 2. And observium server connect to cisco port 47 on vlan 3. There are several server connect to cisco vlan 2. Here is my issue, once I unplug my internet connection(port 48). Other server traffic on vlan 2 doesn't show up on observium. Alert checks

Hello, By default how many times does observium check for an alert threshold and how often? Say I have an alert to send email if a machine hits 95% cpu, does it get triggered automatically if a machine hits that threshold once ? Or does it check multiple times before getting triggered? Is it configurable? Also how often does it check for a triggered alert? Every 10 mins etc?? Is this also configurable ? Thanks, Darian Sent from my iPhone

gaps in graphs

Hello, i got sporadic dropouts over all my graphs. If this happen most of my graphs have dropouts. The poller runs not longer than a minute. `Total time for all devices: 41.07s 35.17s' Memory usage 200 of 1000 MB RAM. All devices are in the same physical gigabit network. Ping is less than 50 ms to each device. Monitored are only 16 devices. Observium itself runs as a openvz container (turnkeylinux). I searched the web but does not find anything that matches my setup. billing not working

Hi All, I’m having a problem trying to create bills for ports for one of our customers… we currently monitor the ADSL routers of our clients, and wanted to see if we can get a pretty bill/graph for the PPP ports of all the routers however adding ports to the bills just seem to make the bill disappear and not work? so far I add the bill successfully, and set a quota of say 1TB but when I go into the edit tab of the bill, the quota field is empty!? also i can’t seen to add more than 5 ports? any ideas Simon

SVN What am I doing wrong

H all When I run svn update on my observium box it usually just says At revision 6089 (This increments to the latest revision number), however it sometimes downloads updated files, but not all the time, I am updating from the stable branch Have I got some settings out of place somewhere with svn? Hi Mike after the upgrade to Observium 0.14.12.6089 the Cisco WLC 2504 is no longer recognized as WLC. It is a generic device, it even removed the basic temp sensor after a discovery... "Sensor Sensor deleted: temperature wlc 0 Unit Temperature 0" I can handover you debug information if you want to. Just let me know how i can provide them :) Kind regards Basile

Spikes in 1 and 2 year graphs

Almost all of my 1 and 2 year graphs look like this. http://i.imgur.com/SnDlXz3.png I've tried several times to fix them with removespikes.pl and .php but never had any luck. Has anyone ever gotten the removespikes scripts to work in these cases? I run the command on a single device at a time and receive no output, but it doesn't fix the issue. I've also tried several of the other flags with no luck. Any pointers? Thanks! -GT

Device location not updated in database (already fixed?)

We are currently using R5919 (yeah… i know. ;-)) Poller output with debugging shows the new location correctly. extending observium to handle custom MIBs

I have added a tree of MIBs (in the ‘experimental’ section of the tree) for my own application services to respond to snmp requests. This is for determining the health of a running service. I can view the objects using snmpwalk, and I can add the host running the agent to observium. I can see all the information retrieved from the ‘well-known’ MIBs (uptime, load, etc.) in observium for my extended agent, but I can’t see any of my own MIBs. Where do I look for how to let observium know about my MIBs so that it can show the data in a tabular or graphical format? I see the includes/polling/unix-agent/* as some examples, but it’s not clear to me where the mapping between my OIDs goes to the variables inside of running observium, so I can invoke rrdtool_create properly. It’s also not clear to me how I layout the various graphs on the page, once I have them created. If there is some documentation for that somewhere, or a particularly good example in the code to look at which would make it clear, that would be great. Thanks

Hello guys I'm currently looking for a monitoring tool and try a lot of them (freeware, opensource, etc...) Observium sounds good for me, definitely. I checked the live demo and can't access to the threshold/alert options, which are the most interesting part for me. I know if you give access as a admin to your demo, your Observium demo will be destroy within 1 minute. So before paying for a pro version, is there a possibility to test a live demo as a admin user or install a "time limited full version" on my VM ? Regards, Aurélien

Control-Plane class-maps

Hi, Is there are way to get the CBQoS stats for the control-plane on the 6500 (or indeed any Cisco with control-plane policies really)? I know they are presented via SNMP as we have the stats in Cacti, showing against “CPP” which is the same name as Observium has for the Control Plane interface (after I un-filtered it in config.php). For what it’s worth, here is the table from the Cacti query: [cid:image002.jpg@01D0121F.7F26CDC0] In this example, you can see 4 of the CoPP classes, alongside one of the interface classes. We use Cacti to get the control-plane classes only (hence grey) and all the interface classes are done by Observium because it handles the dynamic changes which occur MUCH better than Cacti does. Observium sees the same interface index (19) and name (CPP): [cid:image004.png@01D0121F.497847D0] But for some reason it doesn’t attach the CBQoS statistics for the control-plane…? All other QoS stats are present, so in general it is working OK, just the CPP ones which are missing (or I can’t find them). Any ideas? Cheers! Unix Agent

I have read the Unix Agent troubleshooting section. The Observium-wide FAQ didn't provide any guidance either. I set this up within the past week. Running Community Edition, Debian Wheezy. I got one box (CentOS) setup with the Unix Agent and at least one polling worked as it's now populated with different packages, MySQL information (that's one of the scripts it setup). It hasn't worked since the first polling or two. It isn't pulling in any new scripts on the monitored box and the information it does have appears to be stale. I can telnet from the Observium box to the monitored box via FQDN on port 36602 and get a bunch of stuff back. However, the observium.log and my router shows requests going to the FQDN at ports 1 and 6556 that are refused. I don't show anything in netstat listening on those ports on the monitored box. Hi there, Does anyone have a Sonicwall NS2400 reporting CPU usage to Observium. The default settings didn't seem to pick it up. I tried adding the OID (1.3.6.1.4.1.8741.1.3.1.3.0) to the SNMP configuration in the Sonicwall, but still no sign of them in Observium. Where am I going wrong? Thanks, Paul NoSigPLS!

Adding a SNOM 320 VoIP Telefon failed

Hello, i tried to add a SNOM 320 VoIP Telephone. I saw that Observium has an include for snom devices. As a first test a bare snmp request from cli with v1 succeded, with v2 i got no response. But Observium does not discover the device with v1. DNS / host name service is working. I have read in the web that SNOM SNMP support is awful. They have their own mib, a request for "system" does not give an answer from cli. Does anybody have SNOM Devices monitored in Observium and if so, what could be the error that the device could not discovered and added? thx, ecaroh

Under Device Settings - Device properties - there is device type. I’d like to add router and switch there. Checked the mailing list archive. Nothing conclusive on how to do this. Does not look like something in a config file. Checked there as well. Is this used someplace other then he device menu subtree for grouping? Justin

Observium and Google downtime

We use the Google Map API, and it appeared that Google was unreachable here for several minutes. In that time, our Observium box ground to a halt due to all the PHP processes hanging on what I can only guess were map API calls. Once Google came back the machine became responsive again after all the processes finally cleared out.

Missing graphs?

Hello, Today I discovered that some statistics are missing. There are empty graphs since one week in all App tabs - apache, mysql, postgres, etc. There are also no graphs in tab Temperature. Refreash of login page

Hi. There is an html instruction making the login page to be refreshed every 300 sec. If you try to login to Observium using wrong credentials (user may have forgot it) and then leave the web browser there will be an Failed login event every refresh cycle. This leads to unnecessary alerts in SIEM systems for those who are doing security monitoring. Are there a need to have the login page refreshed ? Regards Mikael

Hi everyone, We're testing Observium and I've come across an issue with logging in this morning. I have LDAP/Active Directory configured for auth and has been working perfectly up until now. At first I thought it was my account, but nope all good there. Then I thought it was the LDAP configuration so I changed the config back to the default mysql auth but still not able to log in. I tried rebooting the box but didn't work either also checked the file system and it's not full. I also tried deleting the cache and cookies and using different browsers but still no dice. Not sure if it's related but I updated to the new CE yesterday but it was working fine after the update yesterday afternoon. Any help will be much appreciated! Thanks.

Hello all, today morning I did an update from an older version of observium (sorry, don't know the exact version - but IIRC only 1 sql update file was executed afterwards) to the latest svn version. But if I try to open the Observium in the browser, the page shows nothing (only white background is shown). First I thought it's an issue with LDAP-Authentication. So I switched to mysql, created a new user with permission 10 and tried again. But still no luck. Interface Parsing

Dear all, Just wondering if there was an appetite out there for expanding the interface labelling feature of observium. The existing description parsing (http://www.observium.org/wiki/Interface_Description_Parsing) is pretty useful but also a bit limiting at times, as it seems more useful when labelling layer 3 services and less so for layer 2. Just a few general comments: * For us the pseudowires tab does not seem to auto populate (we use a variety of juniper, brocade and extreme switches and routers), just wondering if I have missed something here... * This aside there are more frequent occasions where we are providing VPLS services for a client and it would be nice if it were possible to label an interface as both a customer and a P2P link for example and then have these separately broken down in observium itself * There are also occasions where it would extremely useful to label backhaul circuits such as dark fibre and waves. Currently the only option for this is to label things as core but that page becomes so big it is not that useful unless you know what you are after (and then you would just go straight to the interface). Something like BACKHAUL: , PROVIDER:, END (A/B etc.) would be immensely useful and time saving. * The other issue we have that I don't have a simple answer for is the unhelpful aggregation of customer switch ports (quite often both ends of a P2P) and their layer 3 router ports. Could we start by having a separate aggregate graph for each circuit reference for each specific client. Maybe if END A and B are specified then the graph could demonstrate that these are actually different ends of the same link? What do people think? BW rob

I can confirm output when auditing output of: telnet (hostname) 36602 or ./poller.php -h (hostname) -d I can also confirm temp. sensor driven graphs do come up for other hosts when using SNMP lmsensors, however not for unix-agent / hddtemp data sources. Can someone point me in the right direction? Thank you.

Dear all, Revision 6001 cleans up a bunch of old code paths that should not have been used in recent days. If you are upgrading from a revision before r5000, it's probably best to upgrade to r6000 (svn up -r6000) first, run a full discovery and poll cycle, then upgrade to latest trunk. We've removed RRD renaming code for files which should since long have been renamed, and variables that should not exist anymore in your config. Variables to double check: $config['email_*'] should be renamed to $config['email'][*] instead. Tom

Groups

What is the intention of the groups feature? It seems like a really powerful way to group stuff together and have interesting views of things. But right now it just generates a list of entities that you can click through or hover over. I took a look at the code that generates all the various graph layouts (iftypes, health, ports). It seems that every page has its own code for handling the graph layout. It seem like this would be a great place to leverage a bunch of the existing code so you can create group specific views of sensors, ports etc... But it doesn't look like the code is structured that way (i.e reusable components/widgets). The standard views are good, but I want to be able to see them on a per datacenter/region basis rather than globally. The global view is visually interesting/pretty it is less useful.

Where are you disabling / ignoring the ports? Screenshot(s) would be helpful here. You can set each port to poll or alert (Yes/No) under the settings of the device the port is on. Alerts can¹t be added up. They¹re attributed to whatever entity/device/metric combination you create, triggering on the individual values that match your rules. You could create rules to match both of your individual PDUs, or all PDUs, but you can¹t ask it to add/subtract the values of multiple rules or metrics to trigger an alert. Curious - what kind of scenario are you looking at that would warrant this kind of alarm? Problems

Hello, I have a couple of problems with observium which really hinder me trusting it's alerting feature etc. 1 - Some servers show as down, when in fact they aren't down and snmp is started (i've also tried to restart) 2 - Some server show as up and while I have an alert for storage to send warning only when its below 5% full it will send an alert saying C drive space is at 0% but in fact the servers have more than 10% left. Can these issue's be related to iop's or the polling time? I'd like to figure this out because the SNMP servers are windows servers and everytime one of them is down, I can't afford to troubleshoot by removing snmp and reinstalling it because windows requires a reboot, which I just can't do on domain controllers, file servers etc. Is it possible to put the login portal to observium on a seperate webpage completely so that customers can log into it from our site for example/

Assistance with Port Alert Checker

Hi all, I'm looking for a little help figuring our why my port alert checker didn't seem to work.I set up port alert checker to trigger when greater than 80%. The actual usage was at 100% for a couple hours. This is a gigabit interface set to 100m with a bandwidth statement. The screen shot reflects the 100m speed correctly. Hi, A solution for a large network like yours could be using a distributed architecture. Here is a feedback from our usage : Current architecture in our organisation graphs 2000 devices and 70k ports and target is 6000 devices. We have built a farm of Observium pollers ( 6 physical servers ) and 1 more for mysql server (+Apache for GUI). Our 6 poller servers are 70% CPU idle and disks are ok for now. We progressively are adding new devices. We did a small patch in mysql scheme, to add a "poller_id" into devices table. At each new device added, script "add_device.php" choose the poller the least used (based on numbers of devices per poller server). Each poller asks to SQL Server devices with its poller_id. The GUI server can read via NFS all rrd files stored in pollers. Hardware used for each poller is HP DL360 Gen7 / 4 GB RAM / 6 disks SAS 10k Raid 1+0 / 2*E5620 2.40Ghz (4 cores each). Hello, does anyone know which parameters need to be added within config.php to enable e-mail notifications. Also, where do I configure the backend settings? Is that in config.php as well? Junos 4-byte ASN support

Hello, I tried digging through the mailing archives but jet lag from my recent trip is stymieing my efforts in finding relevant threads. I'm running 0.14.11.5945 and notice that 4-byte ASN is still not supported. We use 4-byte ASN for the greater range as we eventually plan to run eBGP down to our servers. On Junos devices -- anything from MX, QFX to SRX -- I notice that ASNs show as a negative integer (example "-94967243"). On our Cisco's, they show up as our favorite 23456. The main question is: Are the negative integers a limitation of the Junos MIB? On those individual devices I do not have a "tab=routing/proto=bgp/", the BGP sessions do not show up at all under the general "routing -> BGP All Sessions" tab, and consequently we're missing a large chunk of our network and we don't have any BGP alerts (though I have all the above with Cisco Nexus gear). Are there any workarounds or plans to support 4-byte ASN in Observium, specifically with Junos equipment? Thank you! bt

I'm having some major issues with Auto-discovery (read, I can't seem to get it working at all). Hi there, We monitor APC pdu's here and have set up the following metrics: 41 PDU SENSOR ALARM notification of a warning/alert/down event on sensor sensor_event eq warning sensor_event eq alert sensor_event eq down type match power * This then picks up on all the sensors on that device: power banks 1 and 2 , power supply and voltage. Then if you go into the the node, click settings and then "sensor" you can manually set the min/ max for each one . once this hits it will alarm! You need disable 'fdb-table' poller module (in device edit -> module tab) On your device too many active vlans, on cisco devices FDB entries stored in separate contexts for each vlan. That why for cisco devices walked BRIDGE-MIB::dot1dTpFdbEntry as many times as have active vlans on device. 'Aloha! I'm in the process of evaluating observium for my organisation's needs. We have some instances running already, but my task is to do the evaluation in a more structured way. I have some questions which I will keep in different posts to keep the threads clean. Performance: We are looking at a network currently consisting of 4000 devices with close to 100'000 ports. These devices are well known to observium and a subset of them got auto discovered just fine. But how about performance. Will it require vast amounts of computing power? Also, our network grows quite rapidly, might be 50% bigger 12 months ahead. I found an old thread from July 2013 where Joe Hoh describing a complex multi server setup to scale observium to something approx 2-3 times my current needs. Will I have to go through similar "struggles" to get it working? Or has observium changed much to make it scale different than it did 1.5 year ago? Pointers to information regarding scaling observium are most welcome. -- /Morten %-)

Hi, I am using svn 5973. I am trying to setup an Alert Checker. No matter what I do, I get an error that the alert name must be unique. I have tried strange names in the "Alert Name" field, but everything seems to be taken :-( Leaving the entity field blank, gives me another error. I am trying to setup, to start with, alerting if a port on the upstream router runs at 80%. It works fine on my server (ubuntu), but I just get intermittent output of 1 disk (sda) and no temp reading at all from the Arch linux PC. I want to use the graphs to proactively monitor the storage on the servers. Is there another solution? I promised you more questions for use in my evaluation process, here comes the next one: Odd devices: besides the 4000 routers and switches in my previous post, our business does a great deal of video transmissions. This is handled with crazy video codec boxes which sometimes have very limited SNMP capabilities. I face two problems: - it cant be autodiscovered; the MIB simply doesn't that. I have a database describing exactly what we have and how it's configured. - it's covered by NDAs, so I cant event tell you much about it. I would like to graph various parameters in these devices using observium, but I guess I will have to implement these myself. (or hire somebody to sign the NDA and hack something together for me). Also, sometimes the concept needing graphing isn't really bound to a single device, but more a collation of multiple states from multiple devices. I understand that observium isn't really meant to be extensible by the end customer (me) by simply tweaking configuration. I read "It's not as simple as "adding the MIB", actual code needs to be written to support the device and its features. You could learn PHP and familiarise yourself with the Observium codebase and write support for it yourself." as a warning, as i'm nowhere a competent PHP hacker. Think the questions are: - is observium at all the right tool for the job? (a goal is to limit the number of tools the NOC has to learn) - can observium live in an non-auto-discovery world? - can observium handle abstract measurements not bound to a specific device? -- /Morten %-)

Hello, Several (virtual) servers (Windows 2008 R2) do not show the storage graphs in Observium. On these servers the poller module keeps switching to disabled. The amount of storage used do show up on these servers. Other servers, same configuration, do show the storage graphs. On these servers the storage poller module do stay enabled. I've checked and restarted the SNMP service locally on these servers. I've updated CorreLog (syslog agent) on the servers to the latest version. Observium is installed on a Ubuntu server. I've updated Observium to 0.14.11.5963. How can I fix this problem? Hi, I have tried some times ago to change the MySQL server into MariaDB on my Observium server (community), but it seems that is breaking some parts of Observium and doesn't seems to update things. Anybody here have a good experience about moving MySQL to MariaDB with observium ? Hi All not sure if this is a bug ive found or simple me being dumb! ive just enabled a 2008r2 server with WMI to monitor it abit more… and ive noticed in the Timing panel of the device its listed the module mssql ? the mssql wasn’t listed before i enabled the WMI module for the device? shouldn’t it read WMI ? ive attached a screenshot showing what i mean Regards Simon

Rancid SVN integration makes apache2 crash

Hi, We're using Observium Subscription-version on a Ubuntu 14.04 LTS server. Hello, which file should I edit to configure and enable e-mail notifications for when a device is down? I need assistance configuring the mail backend settings and the alert itself. Syslogging & Expansion

Hi Everyone, We are considering the possibility of using Observium's syslog capability to handle the syslog output of 50 machines which will be spitting out roughly 300K lines of log per hour for a grand total in the ball park 360,000,000 log entries per 24 hours. Has anyone used/attempted to handle this volume of logging with Observium in the past? If so, would you mind sharing your experience? I am also looking for feedback on hardware suggestions for both the Observium machine as well for the standalone database server. Any feedback is appreciated! Thanks, -Lane

Newbie... Cambium PTP wireless sorta contribution

Greetings, New to the product, new to the list, trying it out to see if this will work for us. and I like what I see so far. I note with glee the upcoming support of the Cambium Canopy products with the patch filed under OBSERVIUM-1055, but also see that it's only for the PMP product line. Now it's important to note I'm a network engineer, not a coder, so I'm not sure how to go about some of the more (heck, even the lesser!) intricate details of PHP programming. I've been able to make it as far as the following for the os.inc.php include, but submission of same for the project. I have no idea how to go about doing, and again I'll point back to not being someone who knows how to write code. Just for testing sake, I put the following stuff into my own installation and tested, the discovery php is properly discovering/classifying the devices, and the poller phps being called are fetching the proper information from the devices. smokeping ping tab now showing up on device

H Guys, I'm having a problem with getting smokeping working with some of my devices. I have smokeping setup and it's working correctly ( I'm able to go to the smokeping cgi and see the graphs, etc). However the ping tab for smokeping isn't showing up for the device in observium. The device name is the same in both observium and smokeping. However, it's working fine for one of my switches but not the rest. I don't beleive it's a permission as I'm able to get it working with one of our switches. SNMP Location string parsing

Hi all, We use the geocoding functionality in Observium to place the devices on the front page map. All is working reasonably well. Today we set the SNMP sysLocation field locally in each device to street address ("Street, City, Country") We would like to be able to add "non-Geolocation" information to the sysLocation string without messing up the geolocation functionality. For example, we would like to add "Room 34, Rack 2" to the sysLocation. Is there functionality in Obervium to do this today? E.g. putting the extra information in "()" or other special characters? Nexus 5596 polling slowness

Hello, Just curious if anyone else is seeing long polling times for Nexus 5596UP switches. Everything else in our deployment is responding in a timely manner and there are no bottlenecks on the Observium server at this point. ./poller.php: access2-2a.sj2 - 1 devices polled in 243.6 secs Polling times in the high 200 second range are not uncommon while most all of our other high port density devices are well under 30 seconds. If anyone has found a NXOS software version that works better than others please let me know. We have tried on various software version 5,6 and 7 releases. I can only imagine this is a Cisco issue but thought I'd ask here in case anyone solved it. Regards, Dan Bliss

Cisco ASA failover

I noticed that a pair of firewalls I had failed over about a month ago but the only thing showing in the logs of the device was that the mac addresses all changed. Is there a way to get better alerting on failover? I know the stateful failover are almost sub second but logs are generated. Not sure if you can monitor that with SNMP but figured I would throw that out there. Carlos

Hi Adam/All I may have missed how to make a more formal submission for hardware support, so if there is one let me know. However, I suspect the mailing list is probably a good arena for any criticism/pointers on what to do better/what not to do when attempting to add new device support. -- I’ve recently been involved in the installation of equipment and support for a mobile medical facility. We’ve used Meraki switches and access points for a number of reasons, not least of which is the instant monitoring/alerts capability, web based management, web based troubleshooting capabilities and easy provisioning of equipment when it needs to be replaced. As much as the Meraki web management portal is useful, it’s not necessarily always available in this facility and we needed a local management system/interface to monitor the equipment, alert local users to any failures/problems, and provide a quick and easy “view” for all of the ICT equipment within the mobile facility. So, I used Observium, but needed to add support for the Meraki components. Meraki provide an SNMP interface to their cloud management platform. It’s basically useless if talking directly to equipment as there’s currently no extra information you can extract from the devices themselves. I don't really want to add this to Observium myself but have included the OID for detection and possible to for additional inventory collection at a later date. Print Interface Details - show other devices in the same subnet - need to exclude the private IP addresses ?

Hi All, I have a small suggestion regarding the info displayed together with each interface under 'Port' => 'Detail' . There we noticed the observium displays all other devices on the same subnet from other devices at the last column of each interface irrespective of whether they are real IPs ( internet routable ) or Private IP addresses ( defined in RFC 1918 ). Although this feature is really good, we feel that if there is an option to exclude certain IP subnets from this selection, specially the private IP addresses it would make sense because we found there are lot of unrelated interfaces are getting listed ( about 50 items ) under this merely because of the fact that they are having the same IP addresses/subnets but which are completely different and isolated device interfaces in other VPNs which is common in IP VPN setups. We found the location where this logic is programmed, and we can easily changed the SQL query to accommodate this as follows ( *`ipv4_address` NOT LIKE '192.168.% etc. ) *shown below But it would be elegant if these excluding subnets could be defined as a config parameter and filter them here. monitor /dev/sg1 temperatre sensor

Hi All, i don’t know if this is possible or not or even if i need to create a custom script to do this for me? but i want to monitor the temperature of HDD's thats plugged into a RAID controller? currently the hddtemp doesn’t detect the HDD :( but i did get some progress with using the /dev/sg1 device instead of /dev/sda root@proxmox2:/etc# hddtemp /dev/sg1 /dev/sg1: ST3500413AS: drive supported, but it doesn't have a temperature sensor. and from what i can tell i can pull out information using the smartctl command root@proxmox2:/etc# smartctl -d sat -a /dev/sg1 | grep -i temperature 190 Airflow_Temperature_Cel 0x0022 067 053 045 Old_age Always - 33 (Min/Max 22/43) 194 Temperature_Celsius 0x0022 033 047 000 Old_age Always - 33 (0 15 0 0) is the something I’m missing with the hddtemp? or does it require a custom script? regards Simon

Bulk add bills

I just bulk added about 500 client devices (CPE's) to Observium. Trying to figure out a bulk way to add them to traffic accounting / billing. I want to make a bill for each device (customer), based on the device name is fine and then associate a port to the bill. All of the devices are exactly the same and the name of the port is the same on each. Below would be amazing if this existed. Or does it? I would be able to concatenate in Excel right into this. Like I did to bulk add the devices. ./create_bill.php <description> <billing_type> <billing_type> <billing_amount> <billing_day> (customer_reference) (billing_reference) (notes) ./add_bill_port.php <description> <device_hostname> <port_name> (Repeat as necessary) Adding <filename> to the above php scripts, the same way add_device.php has, would be great. Hi there. Resending out message as I am hoping someone can assist me with this. How on earth do you make a packet loss alarm? IE if a CPE hits over 30% then it will alarm? I cant find an attribute from the guide to do this. I have set an alert as device_ping gt 250 type_match * * This works when a cpe hits over 250mms thus showing latency. But how do I do a packet loss? I have tried packet_loss gt 30 but as this is not in the list it dosnt work! Any help would be most appreciated. Graph Previous

When looking at the 6 hour graph, if I graph previous, shouldn’t it show what happened during that time frame 24 hours ago? It looks like it’s just showing what happened the 6 hours before the 6 hours I’m looking at. Which is I guess technically true for what “Graph Previous” means. Is there a way to graph previous time frame yesterday? My use case is zooming in on a time frame and then looking at usage and then trying to see what happened yesterday to see if there was a significant difference. If I zoom in and see the 20 minutes before hand, well it’s just not useful. It works fine for 24 hr, and week and month. 48 hr could be a little weird as well. The last 6 hours with graph previous - I don’t know how useful it is to see the previous 6 hours here. The actual previous time period yesterday - not to same scale This is what is actually being graphed in graph previous.

Distro Script not working

I have added the distro script as per http://www.observium.org/wiki/Linux_Distribution_Detection Running the distro script produces the right output, but observium does not seem to be detecting the distro correctly (still showing as Linux ***-generic) Snmpd has been restarted, and the OS being detected is Ubuntu 14.04. Any idea what could be going wrong? Thanks!

I quasi-hacked my community edition release to provide basic support for canopy, but it didn't give any RF details, just basic network utilization. I see where there is a patch to provide better support in the subscription version, which I am hoping will show up in the next community release. If the data looks good for canopy on that, we'll be converting to the subscription version very shortly thereafter... Hi I am trying to set the Alert checker to notify me on any sync speed changes on the adsl port. F5 device O/S identification failures

Hi All I've got a support case open with F5 regarding an issue whereby their net-snmp implementation stops reporting F5 specific sysObjectID values. This may be a recent 11.5+ version issue, as I've not run across it before, and it only seems to occur after making SNMP related configuration changes. e.g. on virtual editions, SNMPv2-MIB::sysObjectID.0 = OID: F5-BIGIP-SYSTEM-MIB::bigipVirtualEdition Starts to become at some point, SNMPv2-MIB::sysObjectID.0 = OID: NET-SNMP-TC::linux Observium goes back to treating the system as a Linux box. The F5 specific OID's are still pollable, so the best fix seems to be a quick poll against F5-BIGIP-SYSTEM-MIB::sysGeneralChassisSerialNum.0 to determine if it's an F5 system. Observium not updating

hi everybody, I've added a "normal user" by observium installation I customized it adding a new device (just for test) when I'm doing the login I see the world map and the device why can I not see the green point? Unix agent bind issue

I got the unix-agent running on one of my main dns server and when i test it telnet to port 36602 it displays results but my observium server isn't displaying any information for that server. Any ideas? Tim S Field Tech/Ast. System Admin E-vergent.com

Reduce your storage IO with rrdcached

There was some discussion on IRC the other day about rrdcached and how it can be used with Observium to reduce your storage IO a lot when polling a huge amount of interfaces. However, not a lot of documentation exists yet on how to get rrdcached to work with observium. I did some trial and error and found a working method and wrote a quick and dirty guide. Ports not found on older PowerConnect switches

Hello. I'm having trouble getting Observium (CE 0.14.4.5229) to recognize ports on my Dell PowerConnect 3048 and 3024 switches. It appears these switches only support SNMP v1. Observium connects and grabs SNMP contact, location, etc. but doesn't see ports. Hi ! Observium CE 0.14.4.5229 Following the docs, in config.php I set : $config['auth_mechanism'] = "mysql"; $config['allow_unauth_graphs'] = 1; $config['allow_unauth_graphs_cidr'] = array( "10.1.0.0/16" ); I create a user "guest" ... but it cannot see any graph. I login to Observium as admin, I edit the user "guest" properties : Device Access None Configured Grant access to new device Interface Access None Configured Grant access to new interface I see different configuration : config.php vs web configuration. Observium CE 0.14.4.5229 PHP 5.4.4-14+deb7u14 MySQL 5.5.40-MariaDB-1~wheezy-log SNMP NET-SNMP version: 5.4.3 RRDtool 1.4.7 I have modified one source file : /opt/observium/includes/alerts.inc.php I restarted web server and php-fastcgi ( no opcode cache ), but Observium doesn't see the update. A strange issue indeed… Based on Mike’s input I ran on the old-style poller for a day, then all is fine. I’m now running on poller-wrapper for another day, with concurrency set to 2, and that seems to be fine as well. I had it at 8, then all goes to h*ll. Alerts in "Other" state

Hi, I have quite a few alerts stuck in the "Other" state, any idea on what causes this? I had this problem a while ago and then it seemed to disappear after creating a few more alerts and several svn updates so i'm not really sure what cleared it but after adding more devices it's back again. I've tried regenerating the alerts a few times but that makes no difference, is there some debug that can be turned on to work out what is going on here? It's across multiple alert checkers and even something as simple as "device status eq 0" for a device down check has multiple alerts stuck in "other" state. Server drive space

Hello, I want to monitor windows servers for C drive space. While I had a policy that was using the storage_perc gt 90 and it was working fine, I want to monitor instead just for servers with 5 GB of space or less, on any drive for now, then narrow it to certain drives. I put storage_free lt 5 (thinking this would look for 5GB or less, maybe its 5% or less not sure) but it's throwing some alerts that are not true. I get some servers with the art and when I check it shows as if the C drive had 0 B left, but in reality they have 11 GB and more free. Any idea how I can accomplish what I want? Thanks, Darian
