Hey All, Thank you for this interesting product. We started to use Observium for basic and monitoring of our Linux and Windows infrastructure. I have a quick question regarding Alerts , I have configured Alert Checker as follows: Check Condition: device_status is 0 device_status_type is ping Device Match: hostname match * Entity Match * I get only one Alert per failure, then once recovered I get one recovery alert. I would like to keep getting alerts till the state is recovered or we manually suppress is it using ignore. Thank you very much. Different Alert thresholds for different temperature sensors of the same cisco device

Hi , We are using the Observium subscribed edition 0.14.9.5814 and trying to set different alerts for *different temperature sensor types* *of the same cisco device*, but could not find a proper method to do that. Please find the annexed screen-shots of the alert config. that we tried, and it matches all the temperature sensors (there are about 6 types). We are looking for the way to differentiate these sensors to set different threshold levels. Excluding docker mounts

Hi, I'm running docker containers on one of my workstations and the syslog on that machine is now getting heaps of 'permission denied errors' like this: *Sep 22 16:25:05 raven snmpd[3295]: /var/lib/docker/aufs/mnt/5e126344b6b34ec70d5982e5cdf121bdf9698342a9223f6ef2d1e7d01cf3fff7: Permission denied* If I execute a non-root *df -h'* I'm also getting *permission* *denied*. I've tried to exclude the mentioned path using *$config['ignore_mount_string'][]* but that didn't do anything. I assume the other way would be to exclude it somehow using snmpd config, but got no idea how to. Cheers, Pieter

syslog-ng implementation and Cisco ASR9K

Hey guys! I´m setting up syslog-ng implementation and it works great for all my Cisco IOS-devices, however most of the devices in my network is Cisco ASR9K-routers running IOS-XR and it seems syslog from them wont go in to Observium. I did a quick look in the syslog-messages from the ASR9Ks and it seems IOS-XR actually don't use its hostname as hostname but instead use its active routeprocessors name (wtf cisco?!) making the syslog messages look something like this: RP/0/RSP0/CPU0:Nov 28 23:56:53.826 : config[65710]: %SYS-5-CONFIG_I : Configured from console by console Now there is a command that let you add a "hostname prefix" to the syslog messages, which means that I can type my own custom string as hostname for syslog, sadly it still just adds it before the RPS-id making the messages like this: router1 RP/0/RSP0/CPU0:router:Nov 28 23:56:53.826 : config[65710]: %SYS-5-CONFIG_I : Configured from console by console This of course makes it impossible for Observium to match the syslogged hostname to a hostname in the database. I took a look in the observium syslog-code and if I understand it correctly, if it fails to match the hostname it does a fallback and tries if maybe the IP-address is used as hostname and try to match it against a host in the database? In that case maybe I could change the syslog-ng template that forwards the data to Observium to instead use source IP instead of hostname? destination d_observium { program("/opt/observium/syslog.php" template ("$HOST||$FACILITY||$PRIORITY||$LEVEL||$TAG||$YEAR-$MONTH-$DAY $HOUR:$MIN:$SEC||$MSG||$PROGRAM\n") template-escape(yes)); I tried change $HOST to $HOST_FROM and $SOURCEIP but no luck so far. Hi, We've taken our first batch of 6807-XL chassis and have a couple of minor issues with the component identification and detection in Observium (r5815). I'm not sure if it's best to add a bug report or raise it on here, so I'll start here and move to JIRA if requested. In summary the hardware is reported as: "Hardware: ciscoProducts.1765" - if the same standard as the other 6xxx series is to be followed, this should be translated to "cat6807" I believe? Slightly more importantly, there are permanent 'false' alarm states for the 3.3v outputs on the PSUs which are present: There are 4 bays, numbers 1 and 2 have PSUs, 3 and 4 are empty. It correctly shows the sensor only for objects for 1 and 2, but shows them as 'false' not 'true' for being happy. The graphed integer is 2 (not 1). Console output say's it's OK, so probably (yet) another lying/inverse Cisco SNMP OID... power-converter 1: power-converter 1 : 3.3V Output: OK power-converter 2: power-converter 2 : 3.3V Output: OK Lastly, the Crossbars statistics are, well, a bit weird. Image below as it's easier to explain: I also have just noticed that all the other 6500 series chassis are showing a weird sensor (VTT this time) under the crossbar stats as well. So maybe this is a recent more general issue and is not directly related to the 6807 chassis? (This is a 6509 below) If this should all go to JIRA instead then can someone just let me know if I should split it into individual reports or not? Hi Team, I was looking into the ping statistics in All Devices ----- > Graphs --- > Ping. I understand this is the ping statistics between my Observium server and the network device. I am seeing really high values for the ping statistics. Almost ~ 600 ms for some Arista 7050-64R and for others spikes as high as ~7 secs. In actual, the RTT between the Observium server and these devices should by around 0.4-0.5 ms. Please see the attachment. Thanks ! weird mssql polling issue

Hi All does anyone have an idea why one of our machines is take 182s to do a poll? for some reason its doing a poll for mssql, yet when i look in the config modules its disabled? I’ve attached screenshots showing my issue is the a way i can debug whats going on and why its doing this? i did a manual ./discovery.php -h 43 and that doesn’t seem to show anything about mssql anything else maybe I’m missing? regards Simon

Alerts and e-mails

Hello I have installed the software about 4 months ago. I have not been able to get the alerts to work at all. I do not have any of the alert pages in the drop down menu. In fact the only alert page that exists is http://192.168.1.31/add_alert_check. http://192.168.1.31/alerts, http://192.168.1.31/alert_checks and http://192.168.1.31/alert_Log just take me back to the homepage. I also do not see any of the alert HTML files under /opt/observium/html/pages except for Add_alert_check. I also have not been able to set it up to e-mail. I just update to 0.14.4.5229 this morning. Backwards switches

Hi Everyone My switches are showing inbound traffic as outbound and outbound as inbound on Observium. I suspect it may be something to do with the SNMP in the switches that can't be changed therefore is it possible to swap the two on observium? My router which is also monitored by observium shows inbound and outbound correctly. Thanks Ryan

New feature would be needed- Individual alert checker email address. That way one alert checker could be setup to match on .us.domain devices and send to the US NOC email address. A second checker then would be created to send .jp.domain devices to the JP NOC email address. Feature requests 876 and 988 would take care of it. Changing Alert checking frequency

I've setup a couple of alerts however I don't see a way to have the alerts email sent out say every 5 minutes or w/e if the alert is triggered. Is there a way to cahnge this? I have a server which triggered an alert and last time alerted is more than 30 minutes ago.

Interface description parser issues

Hi All, Wondering if anyone can help with this... I have Observium setup on about 30 switches and routers. The only feature I haven't been able to get working is the tagging interfaces based on description as Transit, peering etc. As an example, this is one of our Internet transit interfaces: interface GigabitEthernet0/1 description Transit: {14379} (Pipe Networks AS24130) [100Mbit] Observium tells me: Total Graph for ports of type : Transit None found. Need assistance adding an application...

Anyone familiar with adding an application? I think I have everything the documentation said to do in place, and I followed the example of a patch (asterix) that added an application, but I cannot get the web GUI to display the new app in the Apps tabs and dropdowns. I have an application that spits out data in the right place...I can telnet to the polling port and the output includes my new data with the proper <<< >>> header. So I'm thinking I may have to add a row to the applications table in the observium database? Is that a necessary step? The php looks like it needs an 'app_id' from somewhere. Thanks for any assistance.

Hi, We have several f5 load balancers added. But from observium ui, I saw they report traffic way lower than what f5’s own guy replies. The difference is quite huge. >From observium, each interface shows bandwidth usage like less than 1M bps. >From f5, it shows several hundreds of mega bps. Although from f5’s dashboard, it’s hard to understand, it doesn’t say which interface etc, it simply say out, in client side, server side etc. Also from observium, it reports each interface as 10Mbps. Enterasys Chassis Switches polling\discovery problems

Hello all, I've been trying to find out some more information. I'm in the testing run of trying to migrate from Cacti to Observium. Enterasys standalone switches seem to poll data okay (other then memory and CPU) but the Chassis series like the S8 or N7's seem to be giving me a problem. The polling and discovery of these devices appear to hang. Looking at the polling\discovery history from the WebUI just shows 999.99s. Are there any tweaks I can do to get these devices to pull correctly? -Austin

Real time graphs resets much before

Hi Team, I was doing some "real time graphs" for interfaces on one of our switch devices. I ran the tests for 15 seconds of Polling interval. The page says the "graph shows last 3600 (60 mins)" but it seems they get resets in 4-5 mins and restarts itself. Has anyone see anything similar before? Version of Observium : CE 14.4.5229 Thanks! I tried that. But seems only a few module are listed there. I think if I disable any of them, a big class of monitors would be disabled with it. I am looking for a way to disable certain mib/objects. The ports on the switches doesn't seems to display correct network throughput

Hi Team, I installed Observium recently. It seems to be working just fine. However, I do see discrepancies in the throughput result. When I run a network performance tool (Nuttcp) on one of the server and monitor the corresponding port on the switch through observium. I observe that the the server is generating around 9.8 Gbps data. If I check the ports directly on the switch I see same thing (~9.8 Gbps) but when I see in through observium on the corresponding port , I see frequent spikes to 12 - 15 Gbps. I am not sure why I am seeing these high value because the NICs on servers are having a 10 G NICs and I never see anything higher than 10 Gbps on server or on the port on the switch. But the real time graphs on Observium shows the spikes of around 12 - 15 Gbps. I would be really glad if you help me on this. I really like the tool but the discrepancy in the throughput result is kind of driving me crazy. Thanks! Hi, All I tired many ways to make email working. But seems to be out of luck. >From linux command line, mail prove to be work on either local sendmail/postfix or via external smtp server. Php test email works either way as well. But observium seems not able to generate any alert email. A tcpdump session would not capture any email data as well when my configured alert checker fires off an alert. So we have a router bug of memory leak core-dump which was caused by observium trying to do snmpwalk against a certain mib. Vendor advise us to upgrade the code to latest, which we can’t do without significant amount of coordination. So I am trying to figure out how to make observium not to poll it. didn’t find from gui. If I delete the mib definition from the mibs/ sub dir, would that be enough? Thanks a lot.

Hi Team, I recently installed Obervium I am in process of adding my switch devices to Observium network monitoring tool. It seems that my Force10 S4810 switch with FTOS 8.3.12.0 displays correct graphs whereas the Force10 S4810 switches with FTOS 9.4 doesn't display graphs correctly.It works partially, but doesn't display a lot of other information. The website http://www.observium.org/wiki/Supported_Devices says they have tested FTOS till 8.2.1.2 and I can see it works fine at least till 8.3.12.0. So Iam not sure what should be expected for higher version of FTOS. It works just fine with Arista OS 4.13.6F I'll be really glad if you can look into this. Thanks! alert checker based on a specific mib value?

Hi, I am trying the enterprise observium version now for the alert checkers. I understand that we could add checkers based on existing conditions and metics listed on http://www.observium.org/wiki/Alerting_Metrics_and_Attributes But say, if I want to alert on another mib value not listed here, is there currently a way to do so? for instance, I have this mib listed under mibs/PAN-MIB-MODULES panSessionActive OBJECT-TYPE SYNTAX Integer32 MAX-ACCESS read-only STATUS current DESCRIPTION "Total number of active sessions." ::= { panSession 3 } Can I add an alert checker to put condition as panSessionActive gt 100000 ? Email Alert setup

Hello, I was able to get some alert checks going but email doesn't seem to be working. When I try the test_mail.php script it eventually times out giving me the following. ./test_mail.php -h fwtec.sup.domain.local Sending test notification for fwtec.sup.domain.local...Mailer Error: Failed to connect to myemailserverl.protection.outook.com:25 [SMTP: Failed to connect socket: Connection timed out (code: -1, response: )] done. my config.php has the following for email settings. $config['alerts']['email']['default'] = "xxx@mydomain"; $config['email_from'] = "Observium <observium(a)mydomain.com>"; $config['email_backend'] = "smtp"; $config['email_smtp_host'] = 'mymaildoman.protection.outook.com'; $config['email_smtp_port'] = 25; $config['alerts']['email']['enable'] = TRUE; $config['email_smtp_auth'] = TRUE; $config['email_smtp_username'] = 'xxx@mydomain'; $config['email_smtp_password'] = 'xxxx'; $config['email_smtp_timeout'] = 10; I am able to successfully telnet to my email server on port 25 but can't seem to send. Port errors

I just saw I had a warning on port errors and looked at it. It is monitoring a Juniper switch interface. From the legend I can't tell what the "m" stand for for the y axis. would this be resource errors from the switch interface stats? Errors: 275, Drops: 0, Framing errors: 275, Runts: 0, Policed discards: 0, L3 incompletes: 0, L2 channel errors: 0, L2 mismatch timeouts: 0, FIFO errors: 0, Resource errors: 11740453 Thanks, Darian

Empty graphs

Hi all, just installed Observium CE 0.14.4.5229 on a CentOS 6.5 64bits in VMware Workstation 9 environment : no problem thanks to well done install procedure (http://www.observium.org/wiki/RHEL_Installation); added manually network devices via following commands with no errors : ./add_device.php xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx ./discovery.php -h all ./poller.php -h all crontab updated as stated in install procedure ; Everything seems OK during all these steps ; When looking at the results via web interface, I can see all (CISCO here) devices with all their discovered characteristics (type/model, soft version, interfaces, % RAM, % CPU, thruput figures on interfaces, ...) but no graph is drawn at all (even after 4 hours) ; by the way, the graphs legends are correclty, and the grids too, but no curve drawn; when looking at /opt/observium/rrd directory, I can see a sub-dir created per each disvovered device and inside each of them, 1 RRD file created for each collected variable ; (each device RRD subdir is about 40MB after a while, RRD files inside are not empty) Any idea to investigate more about those empty graphs ? thanks for any help

Hello Chris, thanks for your feedback; in the meantime, I had downloaded and tested the netdisco demo VMware appliance and got some problems ; I posted the following mail on the netdisco mailing list but did not get any feedback yet; if you have any ideas, thanks in advance Joel ************************************************* newbie in netdisco, just downloaded and tested netdisco demo VMWare package (V1.0 netdisco version ... a bit too old maybe, even for a test) To run a quick test, 1) I just edited community values and uncomment "discover_only =" statement followed by a comma-separated list of IP routers to be discovered in /usr/local/netdisco/netdisco. conf ; I let "#discover_no =" statement untouched ; 2) then, I restart netdisco via : ./netdisco -p restart ==> OK after a few minutes, I still did not see any IP routers added on the discover_only list shown via web interface; nothing shown in /usr/local/netdisco/data/logs apart from messages related to "netdisco starting" 3) so, I tested the 2 manual commands below via SSH : ./netdisco -d xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (for 1 single IP) ./netdisco -r xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx,yyy.yyy.yyy. yyy, zzz.zzz.zzz.zzz, .... for my list of IPs routers Both commands work successfully and results are OK via web interface Questions : a) what else should I do to avoid having to issue the manual commands and let netdisco do its job ? b) with recent netdisco versions, is there a function that allows to export resulting infos (such as the Devices List with their discovered ard/soft infos) as a CSV file for example ? thanks for any help *************************************************

Hello, I just need basics on alerting if device is down or maybe if VPN interface is down etc. Attached I set an alert to just try and find devices that are currently "up" to see if it discovers them with the names starting as fw*. Once it works I will change to check for devices that are “down” What am I doing wrong here since it isn't finding anything.

Hello, newbie in Observium ; is it possible to configure Observium to limit its job to get only the informations available on the main Devices panel ? i.e. Device/Location, Platform, Operating System, Uptime/Sysname so, nothing about interfaces, CP, RAM, ... This would be for quick and basic Device inventory purpose only for some environments The idea is to reduce the total discovery/polling time to the minimum for this basic inventory, otherwise, this could last very long time in case of 100's of devices to deal with. thanks for any advice

Observium Draw errors

Hi Guys, For some reason Observium is giving Draw Errors on all of our graphs. This started happening after the latest svn update. We have this error on our live observium and our staging/testing one. Does anyone know how to fix this? Apache 2.4 config (for newer versions of Linux)

I saw in the list archives that someone recently asked about using newer versions of Linux with Observium. ok great, I will get a few basic alerters programmed and await an update at some stage with further examples. I will update tommorrow if the alerts have been successful. I like the send recovery toggle - sometimes the little hamster would go ape for up to 20 emails with a missed SNMP down. Glad to send the end of that. 6500 PSU Voltage Check

Hi All, I was wondering if I could configure alerts for the voltage on a couple of 6500 power supplies (to try and alert on power failures). I've used the Entity Type of Voltage and this picks up the Enitity's from the 6500 (110/220v AC power supply, 2500 watt 2 - Power Supply 2 power-input) however I'm unsure on how to configure the 'Check Conditions' and 'Associations'. The below is a guess for the check conditions: Metric Condition Value sensor_voltage lt 220 In Associations I have simply put * * which I suspect is incorrect. Has anybody else tried setting up checks on voltage? Thanks Jake

I have never had to add them or go near them as the version I was originally running just simply emailed me with Device down, device up, device rebooted, or if I wanted it to - port down etc So the new version will not do this by default? Thanks for your replies, I have un commented the line "$config['poller-wrapper']['alerter'] = TRUE;" , and also confirmed that I have the correct cron job configured. I then gave the VM a reboot as It is one of the devices that I observe. Unfortunalty i did not receive an email alert, so I reboot another device for a full 5 minutes so I should have received 1 x email alert for device down and 1 x reboot alert. I did not receive either. Is there a way I can monitor/watch the email being sent or processed to confirm that it is indeed happening? I was able to svn add the new file I copied and modified as well as make the diff file with the changes I made to the other files. How would I go about submitting my changes/adds to you to verify and commit? Or does the svn add accomplish this? I am not well versed in the use of svn. Avtech Room Alert 4E support?

Thanks! I managed to get it working. Not perfect but returns the 2 temp sensors I need. There is no internal humidity sensor on the 4E so may remove the humidity code as well. For reference I modified the definitions/os.inc.php roomalert os to use the 4E mib. I then coped the 24E sensor .php and modified it to use the 4E mibs and had to change the OID from 5 to 6 (the different product code) otherwise the mibs are almost the same up until the extra sensors that are available in the 24E. I see on the website that the 24E is the only one supported currently since they have different MIBS. (FYI they no longer sell the 24E in NA). I have been able to get it to discover as and AVtech device but I had to modify the roomalert discovery and poller php files to add a space to RoomAlert as the sysDescr on the 4E is "Room Alert 4E v3.1.1". remove old event log data

Hi All, hoping again someone can assist me with my problems or questions… i fixed the WMI problem i was having a few weeks ago, however it has left loads and loads of Device rebooted event logs in my database is the an easy way of deleting this data as really i only wanted the log to show once? not really 2,000 times…. I’ve attached a screenshot of showing the data from the mysql i was simply gunna do 'delete from event log where reference = 2447807' but im not 100% sure incase i screw anything up in the database as its a running live system i use regards Simon

Hi, Further to Pav's comments earlier, I’ve found that setting the “no-parse” flag in syslog-ng stops it from messing with the string and restores some reasonable sanity to the messages which get passed to Observium. Clearly something has changed within syslog-ng from Ubuntu 12->14 and this new issue is nothing to do with the Observium-importing-the-message element. For anyone suffering the same fate, the actual setting syntax to be used within the Observium definition for syslog-ng is: source s_net { udp(flags(no-parse)); }; This restores 100% normal message structure for /most/ of the devices I’ve just tested with, including all the IOS 15.x ones which had all started showing simply "%" as the message content. Hello, Anyone know where I could get an understanding of how to interpret the graphs for network devices? Is there any documentation to help explain what to look for in devices for packet loss or problems with service? I don't see a way to tell packet drops like you would see on a device normally.

Hack Solution: mv /opt/observium/mibs/FORTINET-* /opt/observium/mibs/fortinet/ ./discovery.php -h all Long version: We have been running a very old version for a long time ( 0.14.1.4945 ) and it's been ticking along nicely but I've finally found some time to do a test update to the latest svn and ran into an issue with Fortigate memory. I ran a discovery with debug; attached as "memory debug.txt". If I run one of those commands manually I get the following: root@clone:/opt/observium# /usr/bin/snmpget -v2c -c 'test -snmp' -OvQ -m FORTINET-FORTIGATE-MIB -M /opt/observium/mibs/rfc:/opt/observium/mibs/net-snmp:/opt/observium/mibs/fortinet 'udp':'testdev.test.local':'161' fgSysMemUsage.0 MIB search path: /opt/observium/mibs/rfc:/opt/observium/mibs/net-snmp:/opt/observium/mibs/fortinet Cannot find module (FORTINET-FORTIGATE-MIB): At line 0 in (none) fgSysMemUsage.0: Unknown Object Identifier (Sub-id not found: (top) -> fgSysMemUsage) The FORTINET-FORTIGATE-MIB files don't appear to have changed but Observium appears to be looking for them under "/opt/observium/mibs/fortinet/" when they are actually just under "/opt/observium/mibs/" After doing this: root@clone:/opt/observium# cd mibs root@clone:/opt/observium/mibs# mkdir fortinet root@clone:/opt/observium/mibs# mv FORTINET-* ./fortinet/ and then running discovery again memory stats came back. Pagination on edit settings?

Is there *any* way to get pagination added to the edit setting pages? F/ex the "Sensors" page is unusable on a majority of my devices try waiting for load/render when you've got something like a fully loaded Juniper EX9214 so you can disable a sensor alert on one port ... ~300 ports - it's just pure pain assuming it finishes at all. And then you have to set PHP's limits so high to get the submit/save to work. Another issue is I kind of need an ability to occasionally do a "reset all" on the limits page. Individually checking off hundreds of sensors is a completely unnecessary waste of time. Odd real time graph behavior

I'm getting some strange looking graphs on some ports on my routers, where the graph is basically just a bunch of spikes. Set at 1 second intervals, it will register traffic for one tick, then nothing for anywhere from 4-10 ticks, then register traffic again, and so on. This is happening on Cisco 2811's, 2911's, and a 7206VXR, and it happens on the FastEthernet, GigEthernet, and SVI ports on them. If I set the interval to 5 seconds or higher, it looks normal again. Now, these same routers with this problem have no issue doing a 1 second interval on their Serial ports or sub-interfaces. We have several 2960 switches that seem to work just fine. I've attached an example graph to show you what I see. I happen to know that this port had at least a consistent 1MB connection throughout the time period of the graph. Thanks, Derek

Can I move entire DB to another disk? Like this? : 1. Stop the daemons 2. Rename the DB folder "mv /var/lib/mysql /var/lib/mysql-tmp" 3. Recreate the folder "mkdir /var/lib/mysql" 4. Mount the new disk to the new folder "mount -t ext4 /dev/sdb1 /var/lib/mysql" (put in fstab after) 5. Copy the files from the old folder to the new folder (cp mysql-tmp/* mysql/) 6. Alert Checker - Device match

Hi All, I hope somebody can help. I’m currently trying to add device alerts for all my Cisco devices. As per the example in the alerting guide I’ve used ‘os equals iOS’ which works perfectly for my iOS devices but doesn’t alert on any of my XR devices. I gave 'os match iOS’ a go but that again only gives iOS devices. ‘os equals iosxr’ pulls the XR devices but obviously not the iOS devices. I’ve also tried the two statements on separate lines and that just breaks the checker. Is there any way to put the iOS and XR devices on one checker (based on os) or am I going to have to look into selecting on hostname or something similar? Thanks Jake Turner

I want to move all logs and rrds to another partition. I know rrds are stored in "/opt/observium/rrd"... But where on disk does Observium store syslogs|eventlogs? Unless they are in the DB and moving them to another partition is impossible...? I have it installed on Centos 6.5. Thanks in advance for any help! Benoit

Hi All, I seem to have an issue with a Windows machine and SNMP, every 5 mins when the Observium checks one of our windows machine, I keep getting ‘Device rebooted after X days’ in the event logs of that machine I did do a server reboot the other day on that machine, however if i enable the Device Ignore, i never see this issue but again thats only a work around!? is the a bug possible?! im happy to help with this issue Regards Simon

monitor device by multiple ips

Hi All, this is a daft random question, can i monitor a device via multiple ip addresses? for instance, we have a site with a mikrotik router, they currently have 3 internet lines (DONT ASK!) 2xADSL,1xFTTC currently we use PPPOE on the router so we can see the mikrotik directly, ive enabled SNMP remotely and i monitor the box via 1 of the ADSL lines, however its constantly goes up and down and never makes up its mind! the other issue i have is the FTTC line is dynamic ip and never stays the same for more then 48hrs so in my mind, /etc/hosts or DNS for site1.router goes to 1.2.3.4, 5.6.7.8, 9.10.11.12 then every check it always use one of three ip addresses ? am i correct? or is the another way of monitoring this device? regards Simon

For some reason the Postgresql script isn't working; I have turned debugging on: set 0 -> 1 The output however just seems to be: ./postgresql.pl Execute Failed The odd thing is that other Perl based scripts are working on the same box. eg. Hi, I am using below query to convert ifInOctets_rate to Mbps value. mysql> SELECT ifInOctets_rate, CONCAT(ROUND((ifInOctets_rate*8)/1024/1024,2), " Mbps") ConvertedValue FROM `ports-state` WHERE port_id=105; +-----------------+----------------+ | ifInOctets_rate | ConvertedValue | +-----------------+----------------+ | 55014356 | 419.73 Mbps | +-----------------+----------------+ The value I get different from the value printed on the graph for the same port_id. On the graph I got 427Mbps, while this conversion gives me 419. Since I don't know where in the code this conversion happens, I couldn't figure out if this is the way to go about it or not. Observium SNMP VMware Hosts

Hello, I am able to monitor pretty much everything from firewalls to switches but I am having problems with my vmware hosts. It will add the devices fine via SNMP but when it comes to polling them it will give an "SNMP UnreachableMySQL" after running the poller.php -h 'vmware host' It will show as down on the site and every now and then it comes back online. Hi Guys, I am attempting to setup an alert checker for when a server goes into a "down" state for either SNMP or Ping - ideally I would like to create one alert checker for each (ping & snmp). Reviewing the metrics documentation I believe I should be using a combination of the following two: device_status (0 = down, 1 = up) device_status_type (reason for down, 'snmp'/'ping') Using the above I am failing miserably it seems as I am unable to get the alert checker to "match" a machine I turned off to do the testing. I configured observium to use the http-auth method combined with our web sso system. I believe it is OpenAM, but I’m a consumer of the service and not someone who maintains it. I’m mentioning this because the docs state there are no known users of http-auth. It works well, and required no configuration on my part. I just have to create users for each person that match their campus NetIDs. This is incredibly useful.

paid version not reporting any data

Got something very odd going on...after testing Observium, I purchased it and installed it onto a clean Ubuntu VM. Everything went fine, I added devices, cron job, etc and started to get some graphs. But yesterday and todays graphs are all blank. When I drill-down to a specific interface and click on real-time, I get these odd spikes where it shows 31Mbps In (which is high for this port). I did a side-by-side comparison to the test VM I setup with the free version of Observium and the real-time is working correctly there. Hi Guys, Our observium (latest) 0.14.8.5749 has for some time been showing devices up and down in the event log, graphs missing chucks of information as well. As an example, here is the memory usage on one ubnt box, but, its the same for others too (network / memory ) http://gyazo.com/18db347a5d49e557c082f343b8e96ea5 Here is the copy of the event log for the device : http://gyazo.com/4324c896e6cc268a8869d17c80964340 I can't seem to narrow it down. The machine is running Ubuntu 12.04.5 LTS and as mentioned above, latest Observium. Any ideas where to poke ? Its not a single device, its multiple devices. CBQoS 'drop' vs 'policed-transmit'

Hi, Just noticed that the CBQoS stuff has gone active recently (which is very cool) - currently we get all this via (very) painful integration with Cacti. On looking closer I've found what I think is an issue, but stand ready to be corrected. What I think is happening is that Observium is considering packets the Cisco counted as "Exceeded" to have been "Dropped" where in reality they were just re-marked and transmitted normally. Since the re-marking occurs in the "exceeded" counter, I think Observium is considering them as dropped, instead of just exceeded. This also messes up the pre-policy and post-policy counters, because it implies that traffic didn't make it through when in reality it all did. We use re-marking extensively and so all of the CBQoS graphs show incorrect drop and post-policy information. Either that or we've got a bug/misconfiguration (or I just don't get it), so maybe someone else can confirm? Let me know what debug info is needed if it helps :) Cheers! Possible bug in BGP Prefixes graphs?

Hi Observium team, Earlier this week the global route table hit 512k prefixes, so I was looking in Observium how many prefixes each peer announces. But there is something wrong that I can't explain and it could be a bug. This morning I upgraded to the latest (paid) version r5747, that didn't change this. syslog no msg

Hi All, I have just set up observium now and successfulli integrated it with syslog-ng but i am not seeing anything in the message column. I have tried the patch from her: http://jira.observium.org/browse/OBSERVIUM-850?jql=text%20~%20%22msg%22 but it did not work. If i go to mysql and check the msg field in the syslog table it is just empy (or just has %). All my devices are cisco devices running IOS. Any ideas? Regards Vilberg

process list WMI

Hi all, just a quick question is the currently a WMI module that checks out for number of running Processes for a windows machine? or even a table I can look at to see the currently running processes on observium? I’ve seen your able to get ahold of the processes via WMI just not sure if the is one already integrated? if the isn’t, can anyone point me in the direction as to create the module ? regards Simon

Internet 512k global routes

With the Internet hitting 512k routes, I was looking in observium for the IPv4 prefixes for our Brocade XMR routers. I'm getting a draw error on all prefix updates. graphs/type=bgp_updates is working ok. graphs/type=bgp_prefixes_ipv4unicast or any of the prefix graphs are not. I've tried on observium version 5728 and CE version 5229. Is anyone else using XMR, CES/CER, or MLX routers getting the same thing? Thanks, Ken

Billing

I have the subscription version and have the billing working. What I am trying to do is work out if I can only bill certain traffic. i.e. I only want to charge for international traffic at a $ per MB rate but charge nothing for local traffic. I'm using a Mikrotik Cloudcore router, the international data goes out one gateway and the domestic out another. So I really only want to bill the data for a port that goes in and out one particular gateway. Anyone doing anything like this? Thanks, Mike.

Sensor_value alerts do not process

I'm using SVN version 5742 and all of my alerts work except those that are supposed to check a sensor_value metric. I'm able to check and get emails for alerts on processor_usage, toner_current, and mempool_perc, to name a few, so I know the system is working. When I run the alerter.php script against one of the hosts indicated under the processor_usage alert and I get "1 Status: OK" messages. But when I run alerter.php against a host indicated under the sensor_value alert for Battery Capacity or for APC UPS Temperature I get "-1 Unknown status". The graphs for these sensors are fine, the MySQL table sensors-state lists the correct values as well. My configuration for temperature looks like this: Entity Type: Temperature Delay: 1 Status: 0/0/0/0/2 Check Conditions: Require any condition Tests: sensor_value gt 40 Device Match: type match power Entity Match: sensor_descr match Temp* The alert checker seems fine, but it looks like the tests are failing when they are run. Has anyone else had the same issues with sensor_value alerts? Or is this feature not quite ready to be used?

No port names in traffic accounting

When adding a Calix E7 port to a customer in traffic accounting. All of the interfaces in the drop down are blank, so hard to figure out which one to select. A work around I have been doing is going to the switch port and clicking "Create Bill". Would like to add the ports in the traffic accounting area. Clean up duplicate ports in DB?

Long story short, there was a period of time where hosts were added and removed from Observium a number of times (Essentially all hosts added, deleted, added, etc). In general, there were no ill effects other than losing the previous graph data and ports not being deleted from the DB when hosts were removed. So now I have this. mysql> select count(*) from ports; +----------+ | count(*) | +----------+ | 20701 | +----------+ 1 row in set (0.00 sec) 907+5+1+582 = 1495 So there are a number of stale/orphaned port entries in the DB. IPMI setup

Hi, >From the reading I've done it seems that Observium supports IPMI and I've got a Supermicro motherboard I'd like to get stats from. However, I can't see any way to configure the device, if I try to add devices it only lets me poll over SNMP, which the Supermicro board doesn't seem to allow. Other than stating that you need IPMItools installed, the Observium documentation doesn't provide any details about how IPMI devices should be configured. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Patch for Jira ticket 333 throws error

Hello, I've installed Netdisco 2 with the Observium plugin. This plugin allows Netdisco to show graphs and open interface pages in Observium from within Netdisco. This is also related to Jira ticket 333. When I open a URL, http://observium.server//device/hostname=name.domainname/tab=port/ifdescr=R…) in Netdisco, I get the following error: "Invalid device/port combination. The port/device combination was invalid. Please retype and try again.". However, the correct page is shown in Observium... Any idea what generates this error message?

Bind graph problems

Hi all, I have a problem with my bind graphs in Observium 0.14.8.5736 with RRDtool 1.4.7. I have the Unix-agent configured with the bind plugin on two dev DNS servers. These DNS servers are under really low load, just a couple of requests a minute at most. If I run dns# ./bind | grep -i req-in,Q I receive: req-in,QUERY:1562 Which is correct. Then on my Observium box if I run: obs# rrdtool info /opt/observium/rrd/dns2 /app-bind-1-req-in.rrd | grep query ds[query].index = 0 ds[query].type = "DERIVE" ds[query].minimal_heartbeat = 600 ds[query].min = 0.0000000000e+00 ds[query].max = 7.5000000000e+06 ds[query].last_ds = "1562" <<<<<<<<< Looks good ds[query].value = 0.0000000000e+00 ds[query].unknown_sec = 0 But my graphs in the web interface of totally wrong. API access key

We're currently looking at doing some development to pull the graphs for services from Observium and inject them in to our Client Portal so that clients get nice pretty graphs. windows wmi monitoring

Hi All, hoping someone can help, altho I'm sure this has been answered in the past? i just can’t find the webpage or emails from it at all i want to monitor a few windows machines i have setup the SNMP correctly and all is well but the processor is being detected as Unknown Processor Type due to windows being a tool! i read somewhere that i could use the WMI to fix this issue plus get more outta the windows machine dos anyone have a guide or instructions how to setup the WMI correctly to identify things for observium? Hi all, I hope someone can help, I'm sure this has been answered before? - Sorry in advance! I want to monitor a few Linux machines with ambient temperature sensing devices. The NetSNMPd Client Configuration is working and I get a successful response as you can see: ~# snmpget -v 2c temphost -c public .1.3.6.1.2.1.25.1.10 HOST-RESOURCES-MIB::hrSystem.9 = Gauge32: 23000 How can I modify the host configuration to add the ambient Temperature information in the Observium? ifLastChange usage query

Looking at an operational issue where we had a small interface flap between polls, so link state between polls hasn't changed, but iFLastChange has. Looking at the 'data' view through the UI for the port ifLastChanged doesn't appeared to have changed, and looking through the poller code it appears perhaps it is only updated on a change of operational/admin status on a port? Would there be any use in poller updating it in the db if it was different to the existing value in the port cache ? It would be interesting to be able to alert on 'ifLastChange' < 'some value' .. Or just have the update in the EventLog so when having a look-see at a device it is apparent that a link flap has occurred. A visual indicator in ports basic/detailed view for 'last change' < 'some global config value' like a little exclamation mark or something potentially could be useful to operators to 'spot' issues. Imagine being able to view ports, sort on 'LastChange' during an incident to 'spot' potential causes of issues? Would any of this make sense to anyone? Cheers, Peter

Allied Telesis Support

Hi All, Currently playing with Observium which is brilliant, except when an Allied Telesis switch (running Alliedware Plus) is discovered only basic info is retrieved (Uptime, OS, location, etc), which then causes the issue of halting auto discovery.. The specific model is an AT-9000/28SP. Anyone aware if this switch is supported or not? question about cisco switch discovery/polling

we've got a Cisco WS-C4510R+E switch after discovering and polling it,, it now shows 3 entries for each port 1 is the expected/desired one "64-bit" port and 2 unknown/undesired "Controlled" and "Uncontrolled" 32-bit ports. question why are we seeing them ? how to we get rid of them ? this is making management of this device painfully slow .. takes more then 30 seconds (closer to one minute) for the page to load thanks -Steve -- *This message and any files or text attached to it are intended only for the recipients named above, and contain information that is confidential or privileged. You still need SNMP to poll the device. Once added you can configure IPMI to gather stats from IPMI. Discoverying and polling VRF, OSPF and BGP Processes on Nexus 7K : where to start coding

Hi, I would like to give a try to code some PHP Patchs, so that Observium can discover VRF, OSPF, BGP and so on Nexus 7K platform (our reference will be Nexus 7700 with NX-OS 6.2). We are implementing "VRF-Lite" style (no MPLS), so according to Cisco documentation, it is mandatory to map in NX-OS configuration, a SNMP Context (v3) to each instance of VRF, OSPF, BGP, whatever .... My try will be to first discover the context mapping with this Cisco MIB : CISCO-CONTEXT-MAPPING-MIB.my and then to iterate on these mappings using an additional function like "get snmp walk/bulk with context" on these contexts. Do you have any advice how I could do that ? Which files should I implement / pacth ? Which files could I use as examples and inspiration ? adjusting bandwidth graphs to what the client is paying for

Hi, Just checking out the software for the first time and really liking it. We are using PRTG now and of the things we like about it is per interface we are monitoring, we can set the max x-axis value. It helps our tech's to know what speed Internet connection a client is paying for. We will hand off a 100Mbps interface to the client, but if they are only paying for 20Mbps, we will shape the traffic down to 20Mbps on the router. When you look at the percent graph in Observium, it's based on a 100Mbps max possible speed instead of 20Mbps. Thanks!

Hi All, i know this is probably a stupid question, but how do i delete sensors from within the panel and not on the server itself im monitoring? for some reason the observium has detected lmsensors fanspeed sensors about 4 times over? and im not sure if its the server at fault or observium at fault, so i was just going to delete the old fanspeed sensors ? i have attached some screenshots if people don’t understand what im talking about Regards Simon

Using PHP Weathermap with Observium

Hello! We are migrating from Cacti to Observium and it was a great experience, the only thing we lacked were the weathermap plugin for getting that nice network overview. I then found that Neil Lathwood wrote a modified version of the PHP Weathermap that works with Observium data, you can find it on his github: https://github.com/laf/weathermap I wrote a quick and dirty script that adds the weathermaps to the Observium menu without modifying Observium-code so that it will not break when updating Observium. Simple API calls fail

Hello list, After an upgrade recently, our Simple API calls have been failing. PPPoE ports not displaying in Observium Discovery

Hi All, We are seeing an interesting issue when looking at a Mikrotik Routerboard (RB951 MikroTik RouterOS 6.13) When performing an snmpwalk of the device, we see the pppoe client interfaces (counters, gauges, timers etc) as expected. Better poller for Observium

Hello While Observium has a nice interface, it's database lacks foreign keys a lot, and poller.php is AWFUL. It's slow and unreadable. I've started a new, about 40-50 times lighter observium poller https://github.com/tarkhil/observium-poller It supports only SNMP for now, and is work-in-progress. Only os, processor and memory modules are working, and ports is about 50% finished. If anyone is interested, please join. I'm sure to complete SNMP support for Cisco, but quite unsure if I'll be interested in implementing much else. Alex

Interesting experiment with poll over SSH

We have a host about 320ms from our observium node (yes.. The other side of the planet). Doing a full poll circa 650-700ms (including mac and bgp tables... Its a IOS-XR ASR9K ..). Adjusting the Cr/max-reps did increase speeds, and caused several nasty snmpd explosions on the chassis. As a exercise in interest I spun up a VM much closer to the host, unpacked /opt/observium/mibs etc and configured snmp on that remote host. So I also did this root@obs1:/opt/observium# cat ~/.ssh/config Host remote-poller-node # HostName machine1.example.org ControlPath ~/.ssh/controlmasters/%r@%h:%p ControlMaster auto ControlPersist 10m This means that a ssh 'master instance' was setup at the start of the poll, and hangs around in the background between executions of various snmpcmd's during the poll. [SOLVED] Housekeeping not deleting records if you have a stupid number to kill.

I have a rather old and crufty installation of Observium (now at 5668) with over 70 million syslog, eventlog, and timing records that are older than 7 days. The first time I ran housekeeping -s to trim syslog messages it took about 30 minutes to return showing 42 million records. Just to be sure I was actually done deleting 42 million records, I re-ran the command. The same 42 million records were found. Meh. I ran the housekeeping in debug mode and noticed that I didn't have posix support installed. So I installed the php-process package and tried again. Still no records deleted. I tried deleting fewer records by keeping 18 months worth and that didn't help either. Here's the debug output from attempting to delete records older than 7 days: [root@xxx ~]# php /opt/observium/housekeeping.php -s -d DEBUG! SQL[SELECT COUNT(*) FROM `syslog` WHERE UNIX_TIMESTAMP(`timestamp`) < 1405322208;] 42123350 syslog entries from before 2014-07-14 15:16:48 will be deleted [y/N]: y SQL[DELETE FROM `syslog` WHERE UNIX_TIMESTAMP(`timestamp`) < 1405322208;] Syslog housekeeping: deleted entries Deleting the eventlog records also fails to remove the records: [root@xxxx observium]# php housekeeping.php -e -d DEBUG! SQL[SELECT COUNT(*) FROM `eventlog` WHERE UNIX_TIMESTAMP(`timestamp`) < 1380059875;] 29289378 eventlog entries from before 2013-09-25 05:57:55 will be deleted [y/N]: y SQL[DELETE FROM `eventlog` WHERE UNIX_TIMESTAMP(`timestamp`) < 1380059875] Event log housekeeping: deleted entries (As an aside, I'm not sure, but there may be a semi-colon missing on the delete statement for event log records.) What I eventually found was that trying to delete this many records exhausts the lock table (?). ERROR 1206 (HY000): The total number of locks exceeds the lock table size Issuing the same command from the mysql CLI and adding a 10,000,000 limit allowed the deletion to work correctly mysql> SELECT COUNT(*) FROM `eventlog` WHERE UNIX_TIMESTAMP(`timestamp`) < 1380059875; +----------+ | COUNT(*) | +----------+ | 28177378 | +----------+ 1 row in set (51.76 sec) mysql> DELETE FROM `eventlog` WHERE UNIX_TIMESTAMP(`timestamp`) < 1380059875 LIMIT 10000000; Query OK, 10000000 rows affected (3 min 40.32 sec) mysql> SELECT COUNT(*) FROM `eventlog` WHERE UNIX_TIMESTAMP(`timestamp`) < 1380059875; +----------+ | COUNT(*) | +----------+ | 18177378 | +----------+ 1 row in set (37.01 sec) Interesting to note that deleting 10 million records at a time with the LIMIT statement doesn't always work. Adjusting the LIMIT up and down eventually got me where I was going. Now that I have it the system down to a reasonable number of records, a nightly/weekly cron job should do just fine. Thanks for the effort you put into this Tom. For me, this was like a hardware upgrade.

Login issue. IP works hostname does not?

I have a strange issue that I cannot resolve. I have a recent install of the community edition on Ubuntu 14.04. Only difference is the sites available directive changes to make it work compared to the official install docs. Everything was working perfectly and I could login via IP, hostname, or FQDN. The server is a VMware VM and I forgot to install the VMware tools so our VMware monitoring software would stop complaining. I installed the tools and rebooted and now I can only login via the IP. If I try via hostname etc the form just clears with no errors. Adding /debug=1/ shows the mysql commands etc but no errors. I have checked all the hostname settings, defaulted the host file, checked the apache and site configs and nothing working. Seems like a php issue to me. Any ideas? Housekeeping script

Hi everyone, Yesterday I committed a housekeeping script to clean up after Observium. If you have a nice number of devices combined with a long running time of Observium, you're sure to have a gigantic database of event log, syslog and performance timing information. Some of you have resorted to periodically truncating tables - fear no more, housekeeping.php is here! You have a choice of specifying either -a for all modules or s, e, r, p and/or t for specific things. Apart from that, there are options in the configuration to set before most of these things actually do anything. What it does: -s Cleans up syslog data, based on the age of the entries. Ports that are gone, sensors that are gone, erroneaously created RRD files due to bugs or hardware changes, etc. Configured by $config['housekeeping']['rrd']['age'] = 0; // Maximum age of unused rrd files in seconds before automatically purging; 0 to disable i.e. 90*86400 for 90 days. Cleanup of invalid RRD files. Requires $config['file'] to be set correctly to the path of the "file" magic utility. Runs over all .rrd files to see if they are identified as RRDTool Databases. They can sometimes get corrupted (0 bytes, half a file) when your disk/ramdrive is full. When they exist, they are not recreated even if they're invalid. Consequently RRDtool refuses to add data into them as they are not valid RRD database files. This scripts deletes any .rrd file not identified as RRDTool. Configured by $config['housekeeping']['rrd']['invalid'] = TRUE; // Delete .rrd files that are not valid RRD files (eg created with a full disk) Note: this defaults to true currently. Handle with care. -p Cleans up deleted ports. You can do this manually by using the purge button in the web interface, but one could probably safely assume if a port has not returned after 30 days it really is gone. Shorter could be useful in your environment, mine is set to 7 days. Configured by $config['housekeeping']['deleted_ports']['age'] = 0; // Maximum age of deleted ports in seconds before automatically purging; 0 to disable i.e. 30*86400 for 30 days. -t: Cleans up perf time information. Observium keeps performance times per module, per device and per run. This quickly accumulates into a giant number of rows in the database. Configured by $config['housekeeping']['timing']['age'] = 0; // Maximum age of timing (discovery and poll time) entries in seconds; 0 to disable i.e. 7*86400 for 7 days. Housekeeping logs into housekeeping.log in the log_dir. (*) I recommend putting this into cron, daily or weekly (yes, even though the age is set in seconds, I don't recommend running it every minute ;), but only after you've run it manually once. It'll take quite a while the first time to clean up large databases. The "check for invalid RRD files" is probably quite I/O heavy. i'll be documenting this on the wiki soonish. (*) log_dir was also added as a new configuration directive, it defaults to ${installdir}/logs which will be created automatically for you if possible. Tom

Issue with discovery.php -h all and certain cisco devices

Hello, I've run into a problem where the discovery cron seems to error out. I noticed this in checking the polling times where it was at almost 3 days. I ran discovery.php -h all manually from the shell and noticed it would error out to prompt when scanning the same switch everytime. When I put the device causing the issue in ignore it would go through untill it hit another device that errrored it out. Barracuda Spam Firewall Support

Device not yet discovered

Discovery crashing UPS management card

Good morning all, I'm a recent adopter of Observium so still finding my feet and slowly learning how best to set it up. However, I have noticed that since installing it, it was reporting that my main UPS management card was rebooting every 6 hours. The UPS is an Eaton 9SX 5000i + battery pack, with Network-MS management card, firmware HF which is the latest available for card tech level 16. Dabbling more, it seems that it's the discovery process that is causing it, specifically when it walks the xupsOutput table (.1.3.6.1.4.1.534.1.4) in the Powerware MIB, the UPS management card immediately stops responding and reboots. It actually appears to be crashing on doing a GetNext on .1.3.6.1.4.1.534.1.4.7.0, which is beyond the defined values in that table. The UPS continues to operate, but the management card stops. This also means that Observium has only managed to discover the 'input' voltage - output, bypass and current/power readings all just read as zero as the card has stopped responding when it tries to read those. The poll runs fine and gets data from the input voltage sensor. Clearly this is not an Observium issue: I can reproduce the reboot with a simple snmpwalk on the commandline, which should be a valid operation on a published MIB. I do have a ticket open with the manufacturer, although the first response was 'does it work with our management software?'. It may even be a fault on my unit, but I don't have more than one of these to test. I'm assuming there's a reason for the discovery module to need to walk the tables rather than just read the specific values - presumably bigger UPS units might have multiple metered AC inputs and outputs rather than just the one? I could disable sensor discovery, which will stop the reboots but that won't let it learn about the additional sensors that it still hasn't found. Unless I can manually insert data into the database for the poller to pick up? Alternatively, is there a way for me to override the detection of a Powerware UPS and use the generic UPS MIB rather than the XUPS MIB? Any other thoughts? Steve.

Ubuntu 12.04? Does r5229 work on Ubuntu 14.04?

Loving observium, but noticed some issues with it detecting well over 448 ports on a switch that nothing was plugged into except two patch cables but then i just happened to notice php version on Ubuntu 12.04. The Ubuntu installation directions had some conflicting information: Requires php5.4 but Ubuntu 12.04 does not includes php5.3 only. Recommend LTS, but recommend 13.04 which is not LTS. Does not mention 14.04 LTS. The existing community download is from April which provides another reason that Ubuntu 14.04 LTS will not work well since there has not been another release since then. So i am trying to decide to add a PPA for php5.4 or do i upgrade the entire OS to 14.04? Will the April 2014 (SVN# 5229 ) Observium release work just fine on 14.04.
