All, Quick question about editing alerts. I can't seem to find a way to edit existing "checker details". For example, entity type, name, message or delay. (see image) [cid:image001.jpg@01CF4455.D3B86620] The other two fields "checker conditions" and "associations" both have edit options. Am I missing something obvious? It seems with the new web design that the download links are no longer in the right locations http://www.observium.org/observium-community-latest.tar.gz and http://www.observium.org/observium-community-0.14.4p1.tar.gz both just redirect to the homepage, wget just downloads the html of the website anyone know the new locations?

Alerting in Community edition

Hi all, from the comparision page, I can see a check for the Alerting, but also in Brackets Future release. Can anyone confirm what the current status is of the Alertign within the Community edition? I was able to add a new Alert checker with /add_alert_check/, but I'm not able to see it, or have any menu entries for Alerts. Just wanted to confirm that I don't miss anything in the current version I'm using, and that it is not completely included yet. Thanks, Christian

Adding MIB after a device...

Good afternoon, I added an Eaton ePDU (sensor), and obviously it is showing up as Generic. I meant to upload the MIB prior but forgot. Any chance that after a few pollings it will auto-associate? If not, can it be linked manually? I looked under the Sensors Properties while attempting to edit the device but it looks like a no go. Or, since the MIB is now uploaded is it easier to delete the device and then manually re-add it? Thanks in advance any help you can offer. Hi Nick, All a MIB does is translate a numerical index into a text identifier (with some information about what the value contains). We still need to write code to understand the MIB and collect data from it. We do support other devices by this manufacturer, so I'm not sure exactly why it doesn't work, Tom might, though. adam. Aggregate graphs for Peering Ports

I was curious if there was a way to group together Peering ports in a way that it shows an aggregate graph similar to how Customer ports are handled. On the customer ports page, I can see an aggregate graph of all a particular customers circuits. It seems all I have to do here is make sure they are named the same. We have a few peering circuits to one entity and it would be nice to have that same behavior. I have them named the same but on the peering page the two circuits are shown individually with no aggregate totals. Just wondering if there was some type of configurable option to enable this or not. Let me know if I need to provide anymore info. Hopefully that makes sense. Frontpage Map Zoom

All of our devices are located within the state of Indiana. On the frontpage the map zooms from Utah to Nova Scotia with Indiana in the middle. Of course I can manually zoom in as far as I need but would like the default to zoom 1x more so I can see the entire state of indiana from north to south. Is there a setting in config.php that will let me do that?

After much debugging, tweaking the code and playing around with timestamp to epoch functions I’ve finally managed to get this working and it seems to be pretty accurate (for the Cisco devices at least). I will update asap and that should shed a little more light (Y). graphs for power usage on Tripplite PDUMH30ATNET

Hello, I have successfully added in a Tripplite PDUMH30ATNET. It successfully detects and uses the OPS mib when it sets up and has a nice little tripplite icon. The only thing it seems to be graphing is the Ethernet traffic on the one ethernet interface on the device. What I want to see graphs of are the power usage on each of the power outlets and inputs. Map issue

Does anyone know how to fix this? All the SysLocation fields are identical, but when they go on the map it places 2 blips a few miles a part. This is on all of my locations. I suspect its an easy fix to blow that part of the database away and let it reload them. I believe it started happening when the map updated the last time. Port 'Last Changed' visibility

Hi all, I can't seem to see this feature on the port details page or the 'all ports' list but forgive me if it is visible somewhere. It would be useful to have a 'last changed' time (30 mins ago) etc... on the port details page. This info can be gained from SNMP and from what I can see is already in the DB so it would just be a case of adding it to the page code. Thanks Jake

No such object is irrelevant, it is from another polled module. I'm not sure why it's discovering incorrectly, I will try to look tomorrow. Adam. Interface pop up bubble "up"

1 rogue host on map in the mid Atlantic

Hey all, I recently updated to the new community edition and once everything was up again, I have 1 rogue host showing in the mid Atlantic on the map. None of my hosts use the override "syslocation" function. The number of devices in "All Locations" is equal to devices my syslocation. Here's the kicker, when I click on the rogue host, it takes me to my devices page for my syslocation. Is there anything I can do to figure out what device is causing this issue ? Thanks, R. Prihoda

Hi, This morning at 6:30 the IPv4 addresses of my servers suddenly started changing. I see a lot of messages like: IPv4 changed: 83.247.10.20/27 -> 83.247.10.20/3 IPv4 changed: 83.247.10.21/27 -> 83.247.10.21/3 IPv4 changed: 83.247.10.22/27 -> 83.247.10.22/3 IPv4 changed: 94.142.242.194/29 -> 94.142.242.194/5 IPv4 changed: 94.142.242.195/29 -> 94.142.242.195/5 IPv4 changed: 94.142.242.213/29 -> 94.142.242.213/5 IPv4 changed: 94.142.242.214/28 -> 94.142.242.214/4 IPv4 changed: 94.142.242.215/28 -> 94.142.242.215/4 IPv4 removed: 127.0.0.1/8 Besides showing me that I have some misconfigured subnet masks in the 94.142.242.208/28 subnet, it also seems to have some consistency: - A /27 turns into a /3 - A /28 turns into a /4 - A /29 turns into a /5 My VMware ESXi machines also suddenly show: IPv4 added: 83.247.10.11/32 IPv4 added: 83.247.10.12/32 IPv4 added: 83.247.10.13/32 I also noticed some broadcast addresses being added: IPv4 added: 83.247.10.31/27 (this is an Ubuntu 14.04 server with 83.247.10.29/27) IPv4 added: 83.247.10.31/27 (this is is a CentOS 5.10 server with 83.247.10.7/27) IPv4 added: 83.247.10.47/28 (this is a vcenter applicance) IPv4 added: 83.247.10.47/28 (this is a Dell DRAC card) IPv4 added: 127.255.255.255/8 (this is a vcenter applicance) So, subnet sizes went weird on some systems, 127.0.0.1 disappeared from some systems, some ethernet adapters now show both the real IP address and the broadcast address on some systems. Hi, I see a strange behavior on our Cisco-switches (different models) when listing the interfaces via SNMP using the mib BRIDGE-MIB. When walking dot1dbaseportifindex it excludes interfaces that are UP. Only interfaces that are DOWN or DISABLED are returned. Is this something that is well known? Seems to me that is a bug in ios... Alerting on high 'used' RAM, not counting 'cached'

Hi, Having my first experiment with the new alerting features - very nice! There is one thing I can’t seem to get quite right which is how to alert for Linux system when the ‘used’ RAM is greater than, say, 90% - which is best explained with an example of a device which looks like this: [cid:image001.png@01CF5826.67DDE2B0] Which shows that ‘used’ is 15.1GB (48%). However, for the purposes of alerting, if you use the mempool_perc gt 80 it alarms as being 98%. So I can’t specify ‘used’ as a pool because the only pools are “Swap Space”, “Virtual Memory”, “Physical Memory” etc. There isn’t one which is specifically the ‘used’ RAM element. So, is there a way around this or something I can tweak to get the desired result? Or what is everyone else doing to get alerting for linux boxes like this working for high RAM? Cheers guys! Hello, I’m looking for NMS with support for full query and monitoring of MA5600T series Huawei GPON OLT, but with no luck. Huawei NMS – iManager U2000 costs huge amount of money and it not completely suit to my needs. We use Observium for few months with Cisco, Extreme Networks and D-Link devices and it seems to be ideal solution, but with MA5600T there works only basic things like traffic on Ethernet ports. I have full MIB library for this device but I’m not a programmer so cannot make support by myself. Device names on front page Google map?

Hi, I'm new to Observium, so please be tolerant if I ask a stupid question. On the Google map on the front page - is it possible to have the device names displayed? Either "always" or when hovering on the green place marker. Now when I hover I get a label stating "1 hosts", "2 hosts" etc depending on the number of devices that have identical location. device status boxes on the front page show disabled devices

Hi We have a problem with the front page, the red alert boxes are shown for devices that are disabled. We use the config.php $config['frontpage']['order'] = array('status_summary', 'device_status_boxes', 'device_status', 'overall_traffic' ); and I guess its the device_status_boxes is the one. Did something change, or do we need to change something? Devices shown (some of them) has check mark in: "Disable Disables polling and discovery. Device ignore Device ignore. " So they shouldnt show up, didnt sometime before - but unknown when they stopped working correctly. Turning off some alerts

Hi Been running observium for a while but with alerting turned off. I turned it on recently and got spammed with so many alerts I had to turn it off again. I can't really find how I can tune the alert setting anywhere. Can this be done via the web or do I need to go to the config files? I'm on version 0.13.9.4493, basically i only want alerts for specific things, not every single event. If i go to the alerts section there is no option to configure any thing, there is no 'add alert' button as described in this link http://www.observium.org/wiki/Creating_an_Alert_Checker Is the alerting functions only available in the current version? thanks

rancid multiple config/diff versions within observium

I have rancid working today within Observium, although I do not see multiple version ro config/diffs of the configurations like saw some time ago. I did migrate servers therefore its possible a configuration or permissions issue on the new server. On my previous server a couple months ago I was able to look at past diffs within observium. Multiple Pollers Guidance

When there are multiple pollers via NFS how do they pick the devices to poll? Basically how to they not step all over each other polling the same nodes? I'm seeing snmp and ping alerts like 15 or so every hour come in that didn't come in when it was a single server solution. It does seem to be the same 20 or so devices. These particular devices do typically take around 60 sec to poll. Looking at devices that generated alerts their cpu, snmp response time, and ping time was all over the place. Meaning cpu doubled (10% to 20%), ping times went up to 200ms from 10ms, and snmp response time average when from 50ms to 556ms. I'm wondering if I was polling these devices multiple times within 5 minutes? Would this be related to NFS IO issues? I reverted back to a single solution for now. Remote SysLogging

Hello there, it seems that I have some issues with remote syslogging. Some network devices work well, some others don't. The problem seems to be related to the Observium host, I think, as running syslog-ng -Fevd on my observium server, shows that log entries are coming in also from the devices that do not have any log entry in the GUI. It seems that syslog-ng gets the log entries, but they do not get properly passed to Observium, for some reason, at least for some devices. Therefore, those entries do not show up in the mysql database and thus neither in the GUI. I had this problem also on two other Observium hosts I have tried, but only since an upgrade I performed around October 2013. Before it was working fine for all those devices. Recalculate history usage data

Hello, >From time to time I have this huge spikes in the traffic bills that are abnormal, in those cases I just change those values to 0 in the database, I replace them in the bill_data table, and the charts return to normal, I do not mind losing 10 or 20 minutes of readings. This is my question, Is there a way to recalculate the historical data? That data is updated even if I delete the date in the bill_data table, and I do not want to screw up my installation. How do I get linux boxes to show up in the inventory?

Hello again! I noticed there’s an inventory option for Observium. I’m wondering if there’s a way to get the linux boxes that are being monitored by observium into the inventory list? it’d be a nice way to keep track of things, even if I need to make manual modifications to the database. I’ve already added the serial #’s for the systems, and I was hoping that would be enough for the inventory page on observium to populate, but it wasn’t. Thanks, Ricardo

Port Properties do not work

Hi Currently I feel stuck with an quite ordinary process, disabling of polling and alerts. Normally (on another Observium instance) we deactivate all ports with ifOperStatus=down and ifAdminStatus=down via select/update statement directy in mysql. On our affected Observium instance we have plenty of ports we do not like to poll and keep them deactivated. We have Cisco Catalyst 4507 in use, which are equipped with 400 customer ports (downstream). It is unpractical to activate them all and would overload our Observium with too may SNMP requests. We manually keep the upstream ports (10G Ethernet, Port-Channel etc.) and some specific customer ports activated. When I toggle the ports manually (yes or no) or via "Toggle All" button, it says: "Device record unchanged. No update necessary". Effectively nothing has changed and the ports are still active which should be deactivated. This problem affects the "Polling" and "Alerts" function. Maybe there is a workaround possible via manual update in the mysql DB? Currently we use Rev. 5163. since there is no way that I know of creating alert checkers on temperature sensors can it be adjusted system wide ? or the only way is per device ? Observium integration with Nagios XI

Search Bug

Good Day Observium, I noticed one bug with Observium. Let's say I have a switch with user ports. Users are come and go, so I would like to disable alerts on them for Port Down State on the main page (see screenshot) [cid:image001.png@01CF4FDE.15C3A0F0] To do that I will go to device setting page->Ports https://observium.frontline/device/device=34/tab=edit/section=ports/ and Toggle alerts to No (see screenshot) [cid:image003.png@01CF4FDE.34DDF850] As soon as I save this, port is no longer appear in the main page as intended, but what is does as well - I can't search for the port in the search bar anymore (see screenshot examples below) Before toggle alerts off (Alerts=Yes): [cid:image002.png@01CF4FDF.27FC9640] After I toggle alerts off (Alerts=No) [cid:image004.png@01CF4FDF.27FC9640] This happens instantaneously as soon as I toggle alerts to No, and when I toggle back to Yes I can search port again. Can you please advise if this is expected behaviour? Because what I want is to disable alerts for user ports, to ensure that on the main page only alerts for important ports appear, however I still want to be able to search ports (with Alerts set to NO) using search box. Feature Request: filter by snmp system contact

Hello developers, I would like to request the ability to filter by the SysContact field. Devices and ports already have the ability to be filtered by states, speeds, media, port types and locations; I think it would be beneficial to add snmp contact as well. Mostly, I'd like to see it added to the filter header on both the devices and ports pages. However, hosting providers could use the feature to filter by device ownership or local network engineer. As we often manage/monitor many devices owned by other companies. strange discovery behaviour

Hi, We have a few Cisco routers monitored by Observium which lose their attributes over time. When I do a manual discovery the memory/processor/ip address and BGP peers are correctly added. But over time (between minutes and hours, as you can see below) the information is removed. [cid:image001.png@01CF4D9A.03605160] Then information about BGP or processor/memory disappear. After a manual discovery of the device they are added back, but again after a while they disappear. [cid:image005.png@01CF4D9A.566ADCE0] Is this some kind of bug? Device page not building correct

Hi all, Since a couple of builds i have a problem with the device page. I didn't mention it yet, since I couldn't exactly reproduce since which update the error occurred, and hoped it would go away after some other updates. But it's still here. The page is somehow not completely generated. See below the example of device=1, but all devices have the same problem. The HTML source can be viewed here: http://www.colocenter.nl/observium_device_source.txt It just stops. Running the latest SVN version(5176). The main page, and for example the ports page work fine. It's just the device page. http://www.colostats.nl/devices/ works fine, but http://www.colostats.nl/device/device=ID/ wont. Any idea's what his might be causing? Kind regards, Alexander

API calls return blank page

imbedded alert graphs missing in alert emails using outlook / gmail

Hello, I'm aware that the imbedded image problem has been discussed on here previously. I believe the final answer was "outlook sucks". Both outlook and Gmail web are unable to display the images, but my android email application works. I asked one of our support guys to take a peak and help shed some light on the matter. According to him, it might boil down to using a cid tag instead of a data tag to imbed the image. I have no idea what that means, but hopefully it will help an intelligent developer. Thanks for any and all help into this matter. I'd love to see graphs in my alerts! I've included his email below for additional details: ------ The specific image in question that is not loading is embedded as a base64 encoded image, with a data tag instead of cid tag for the source URL in the message source. Outlook uses Word for composing and displaying emails, and apparently Word does not support the method by which the png file was embedded, as it does not use a cid tag. The PNG format itself is not the issue, because I was able to acquire the original image, paste it into a new email in Outlook, and send it to myself, and it shows up just fine. Looking at the source in that scenario, the PNG source is using a cid tag. I'm uncertain how the message in question is being generated, and whether the method by which it's embedding the image can be altered, but ultimately it seems like the current method is unsupported by Outlook/Word, and I have not yet found any good fixes or workarounds, other than to change the embedding method, or to run a command in Outlook that will open the email in a web browser, which will then display the image in question. Help with a simple email setting

Sorry if this has been posted before but I have been trying to find it for a few hours now. I'm trying to find where the system sets the emailto field when hosts go down. Right now, when a host goes down, somehow its still emailing the old email address sometimes. I have grep -R the entire /opt/observium folder but nothing comes up. I have also tried to set the following setting to no avail $config['alerts']['email']['enable'] = TRUE; $config['alerts']['email']['default'] = "netops(a)blah.com"; $config['alerts']['alerter']['default']['descr'] = "Default Email Alert"; $config['alerts']['alerter']['default']['type'] = "email"; $config['alerts']['alerter']['default']['contact'] = "netops(a)blah.com"; $config['alerts']['alerter']['default']['enable'] = TRUE; But sometimes some of the emails(not all) will still go out to our old email address help(a)blah.com I cant for the life of me figure out how to fix it and have been scouring the observium docs to no avail. TrippLite ATS

Our TrippLite gear have been having issues staying online so we updated the firmware at the request of the TrippLite support or lack there of... haha and observium seems to think the new firmware does not have any sensors.... Dealing with "slow" hosts

Dear list, A few of our routers in the network are terribly slow in handling the complete ifEntry from IF-MIB to Observium. This results in gaps in graphs and there’s no way to speed things up because of relatively broken/slow implementations in (in this case) Brocade XMR hardware. In the past we monitored ifInOctets/ifOutOctets and a few OID’s more. The full ifEntry is too heavy. Is there a way to deal with this, like a possibility to prevent polling the whole thing and skip certain unneeded OID’s. Are there any plans to enhance the poller for this possibility of is there any (filthy) hack known to do this? Any ideas on this would be great. We would definitely want to throw Cacti to /dev/null but due to this problem it’s not yet possible. Not necessary to say this again but we are very, very happy with Observium. Ok not sure what I am doing wrong here - there has to be a way to remove these unwanted nics. So you can see info here http://imgur.com/a/XNhO4 I have this in my config.php // bad interfaces $config['bad_if'][] = "NC-8100w"; I have gone into the database directly and marked the interfaces deleted. But they just get readded, delete gets removed - see the event log in the above screenshots. So I have turned off discovery for the device, and gone into the database and deleted the records of the intefaces. Which works for a bit - but then they show up again. This is a brother HL-3170cdw printer.. I don't know how I would delete the interface on the device directly. How do I remove these wireless interfaces from what observium shows. This printer will never use the wireless interfaces it has. So how do I remove them from observium showing them? You would think if I disable discovery of ports, and then delete them from the database they would never get put back.. But clearly they do - is there some step I am missing? If you need any other info just please ask. TIA

I have updated to the most recent version via SVN and it constantly logs me out of the web interface... all the graphs will die and it will say session expired after about 10 or 15 seconds of being logged in. adding non snmp hosts?

So I have observium up and running, even smokeping integration which brings up my question. I have a few vpses, seedbox, webhost, etc. that I would like to add to my growing lists of devices in observium. But seems you can not add a device that doesn't have snmp? I don't want to monitor anything than the info than say my smokeping graphs in the same web interface. Be nice to show their location on the man graph as green/yellow/red etc.. My vps I might even add the unix agent grab some info from them.. But I don't really want or need snmp queries across the public net to them So how do you add these types of devices - they added smokeping integration to leverage the details it gives. So how can I just see these smokeping devices in the observium web interface without having to add the device via snmp? There doesn't seem to be a way to add a device without being able to talk to it via snmp?

Hello everyone, I've identified an issue with storing of values that are grabbed by the unix-agent. Specifically, a problem with the bind sub-agent. Apparently, when req-in,QUERY exceeds a value of 2,147,483,648, the value that actually gets stored in the app-bind-122-req-in.rrd is: # rrdtool info app-bind-122-req-in.rrd | grep query ds[query].index = 0 ds[query].type = "DERIVE" ds[query].minimal_heartbeat = 600 ds[query].min = 0.0000000000e+00 ds[query].max = 7.5000000000e+06 >> ds[query].last_ds = "2147483647" << ds[query].value = 0.0000000000e+00 ds[query].unknown_sec = 0 This is despite the current value actually being: # ./bind | grep -i req-in,Q req-in,QUERY:2368417221 I initially thought there was an issue with a 32 bit vs 64 bit counter in the RRD itself, but it looks like ds[query].max is well above a 32bit variable's max value. I am at a loss as to where the problem may be and am hoping that someone on the mailing list can point me in the right direction. I can't believe I'm the first one to run into this issue actually... Here's what happens to my graph when this issue arises: This happens to other dns graphs as well, but it happens to this one the quickest, since it hits that 'limit' faster than the other counters do. Additionally, I'm running 0.14.3.5117 if that helps. If I restart named, the graph begins graphing properly again, but I don't want to consider that a 'fix', especially since I'd be resetting all of my bind servers every week. Doable, but not ideal. CPU's on mikrotik

Servers appear quite nicely with a compound graph but my Mikrotik routers have one per CPU is this just something that could be done easily? I have looked and looked and can not find how to delete ports. There are many ports that are added when pointing to my windows machine for example, old interfaces, etc. tunnels that are not listed ipconfig /all, etc. How do you delete them? Do you have to edit the $config['bad_if'] to include the names of the interfaces you dont want? TIA

Just to advice i am seeing a difference between "./discovery.php -h xxxx" and "./discovery.php -h xxxx -d". I had a PDU which was a bit broken. It's other three PDU mates were corrrectly discovered as apc. SVI - Vlan IF graphs

Hello there, I would like to monitor SVI bandwidth on those devices that support such counters. I activated the etherlike mib option in the config and started polling a Nexus 6k, which supports snmp counters on vlan interfaces. I see the snmp counters increasing on the switch, but I see only blank graphs on vlan interfaces, which are properly detected, including their status. The device is properly polled for anything else and it seems that all needed mibs are already included in your distribution. I am running the latest stable release. Any idea? Am I missing anything? Cisco ASA Reporting -nan on interface graphs.

Hi I have a Cisco 5525-X being polled from Observium, everything is fine except all the traffic graphs for the interfaces are reporting -nan as a value and showing no data. The environmental graphs such as temp, CPU etc are all OK. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Wrong ports counter / reset counter

Hi, I've some weird behaviour with observium. Since some time the ports counter on the frontpage is displaying wrong values. Eg. It's showing that there are 264 ports down, but when I click the link, there are only 23 ports down. Also when I add up the up, down, ignored and disabled ports, the total number (13326) is less than the number observium shows under 'total' (14991) Does anyone have an idea where to look? Or is there a way to reset the counters? Thanks! Onno.

asynchronous interface alerting

Hi all, Is there any way of alerting on TX/RX load of an interface (ATM and other xDSL interfaces)? We use mostly Cisco and so we can configure bandwidth and bandwidth receive, so we could define the asynchronous bandwidths. Observium gets the ifSpeed from the bandwidth value, so if we define an alert for TX/RX load, it will almost always report on wrong loads. Interface bandwidth is adopted from the ATM sync speeds, but this is the TX load, the RX load isn't reported on the interface normally. We could define this manually or Observium could maybe get this from the DSL statistics. Best managed PDU for *NIX style systems for snmp support?

Hi, I've been using Observium for a few months now and really enjoy it! I currently have a fully managed/switched PDU which has been under RMA for what feels like forever and the best advice the manufacturer could give me was to return the unit back to my reseller?? I'm not quite sure what's going to happen with it yet so I just wanted to know what the best or most compatible PDU is for *NIX systems?? I'm running Observium on FreeBSD 10 64bit. Basically the current PDU I have keeps bombing out under SNMP queries as snmpwalking the device either comes up with "snmp timed out" or totally the wrong protocol?? It's supposed to support v1 and v3 but the MIB response I get is for v2c? I know that Observium supports APC and two others as per listed on the Support page on the site. Which one is the most NIX friendly? Having read the documentation for the APC models, they can be updated over FTP or SCP which is perfect unlike my current model which needs an M$ exe program and since my network is OpenSource only OS wise it's basically an issue..... It seems to be a bad SNMP stack in my opinion as I've never had any issues using SNMP previously with many different vendors for network and peripheral devices. Observium even goes as far as graphing my HP print servers Toner values which is soo cool :-) Can anyone give me any advice? -- I was actually looking at this model: http://www.apc.com/products/resource/include/techspec_index.cfm?base_sku=AP… as a replacement. unix agent bind

i just added a bind machine successful to observium. Most of the stats and rrd's are working except for the resolving tab ( and cache content and outgoing queries). Is this because of the lack of stats from my bind? How to investigate this? the bind machine is just preforming recursion no authoritative zones. Thanks, Erik

"Overall Peering Traffic" graph broken

We are having an issue where the "Overall Peering Traffic Today" Graph on our front page is broken. When we try and use the option to "Disable broken graphs" it removes all the graphs from our front page. Is there any way to remove the "Overall Peering Traffic Today" graph without effecting the others? Thank you in advance for your assistance! -Shane

Hi group, I was wondering about how to add support for a Qlogic Sanbox 5602 FC switch. >From all the info I gathered so far, it is using the Fibre Alliance MIB. I already added it to our Observium instalaltion, but I'm not able to get all information via SNMP. Only LAN ports are showing up, and some general infos are missing. Hi Adam, I thought I had replied already, but I didn't see my message coming through, so I give it another try. I did import the devices table into the new system, run the discovery and copied the rrds. Everything worked perfectly.. However, I should have imported the ports table as well, because all ports id have changed and our integrated systems relying on those id's were in panic. Quick question... We are a small WISP and I am trying to add all the WAPs to the map... if I do something like this: $config['location_map']['VIE Office'] = "35.476475, -80.992856"; It looks perfect on the map, however under the location menu of course it shows these coordinates as well... Is there anyway to get the SysLocation to show in the location field, but the map display correctly? Or is this a pipe dream. ~JV

Session issues - automatically logged out frequently/instantly

Hi list folks, I've had an issue with Observium since I *think* 4152 (http://fisheye.observium.org/changelog/Observium?cs=4152) where some authentication stuff was changed. Symptoms are once you log in, your next click may have your session already expired. As an example, I can log in, type something in the search bar, it may immediately report that the session is expired. If I simply leave the browser open on a page, it typically will just auto expire at some random period of time, all of which is under an hour. It appears to be very random so difficult to troubleshoot. This happens weather you choose to save your session or not. I've enabled PHP session debugging to write to files, contents of those seem fine. I've also cleared out `users_ckeys` table, no changes. I've also enabled php error logging in my apache config, but observium is overwritting this with ini_set all over the place which makes that somewhat futile. I've tested this on multiple systems, with built in auth and LDAP auth. Common denominator in this case is that my systems are FreeBSD, not Linux. Basically I'm checking if anyone else has encountered this at all, or if any other FreeBSD users are NOT having any issues. Info about my main observium install: FreeBSD 9.1 PHP+Modules 5.4.20 I've tested with PHP's APC on and off php Memory limit = 256 I've mentioned this with devs many times over the last 6 months, they effectively consider FreeBSD unsupported so don't really care. It all certainly worked perfectly prior to that auth update, nothing has changed on my systems since then except standard package updates. Thoughts? --Chris

KVM Virtual Machine Monitoring

Hi Guys, Our purchase of the subscription version of Observium is pending, but meanwhile I am looking to see if anyone has been using the KVM virtual machine monitoring built into Observium. I am curious if Observium is pulling the CPU, RAM, etc. for the KVM virtual machines running on each of the hypervisors or if its only monitoring whether the virtual machine is powered on or not. I read over the documentation, but unfortunately was unable to get it working at all thus far and am assuming its due to the free version not supporting. Thanks in advance! -Lane

Problems with MIBS included with observium...

Hello, Does anyone else see a large number of MIBs that cause errors when attempting to do snmp walks/gets? When I had the free version of Observium, I simply removed the offending MIBs from /opt/observium/mibs but since I have moved to the SVN version, this may become more of an annoyance since I will be updating frequently, and may actually need the MIBs as I find other uses for Observium. I'm getting many errors similar to this: Cannot find module (ZYXEL-MIB): At line 10 in /opt/observium/mibs/220AQV1C0-private However, in this case (and probably many others) ZYXEL-MIB exists just fine in /opt/observium/mibs/zyxel/ZYXEL-MIB. My snmp.conf is as follows: /opt/observium/mibs# cat /etc/snmp/snmp.conf # # As the snmp packages come without MIB files due to license reasons, loading # of MIBs is disabled by default. I have never used the "billing" side of Observium even though I have been using several (subscription) instances of Observium for a while now. Today I wanted to play with the Billing features and followed the jpgraph install prompt, however the graphs appear as broken images. Cannot Login via Web Interface

Not sure what direction to go with this. My instance of observium has been working great ever since I deployed it. A peer of mine decided to add hosts to the host file, and in doing so, somehow messed with something that does not allow us to log back in via web/gui. I can ssh to the device and have looked at every possible log in /var/log, but do not see anything that stands out. I also try to investigate the log while I attempt logging in via gui, and nothing is seen. I took a look at the install documentation to see if anything stands out there, that may lead me in the right direction but do not find anything, other than probably reinstalling which I am trying to avoid (i'll have to look at how to preserve current files, etc once reinstalling if i go down that road). Is there anything else that I can possibly look at to get a better direction and try to isolate this? I can't imagine him modifying the /etc/hosts file would affect logging into observium via the front end gui. Thanks for any help you guys can provide!

Web Session Expired

Hoping someone could point me in the right direction. When I click on the Temperature Under Health on the main heading I get a red "No Auth" on all the mini graphs. I also I see "Session Expired, Please Login Again!" when I roll over the device name on that same page. This happen every time I perform this action no matter if I have just logged in. This only happen for Temperature under the main heading. I don't see the behavior on any other graph. Even when I go into any device click Health and then Temperature I can see the graph and do not get the "No Auth". I am using ldap against AD for my authentication. I've looked at the apache logs and don't see any glaring issues. PHP and Apache should have defaults. I sess the sessions in /var/lib/php/session/ being created. Some problems with device polling.

Hi Marco, If you no longer trust your database, copy over the rrd folder, then run add_device.php for all your hosts. You could do this with a for loop if you extract the hostnames from your old devices table. That said, I doubt there will be much wrong with your devices table, your plan should work just as well. Is there a guide on how to best setup alerts for all devices? svn update not fully working (v0.14.2.5106)

Hi guys Currently I wonder why I can't update to the latest version from SVN? We have 2 observium instances, if I do a "svn update" one installation does not update to the latest version. Alert Emails

Ive followed the documentation but cannot get email alerting working. I see nothing in my mail log from Observium and other mailings on the system work without issue (RANCID, using the mail command from shell) so I believe it related to something I am doing wrong in Observium or PHP. It also looks as though whats in config.php.default doesn't match whats documented in the wiki. Ill gladly update it once I figure out which is correct. Possible to ignore interfaces without description with the bad_if_ filter?

Hello list. As the topic suggests. My enviroment somewhat relies on ports in the network having a interface description, graphing, billing, provisioning, rancid, and a few other stuffs gets activated whenever a description get set. I would like Observium to behave in such manner aswell - ive put up a feature request on this in Jira but now that ive read up abit more i realise that this could possible be achieved through the built-in filters. Has anyone built a smart regexp or something with the already available filters? We run a juniper-setup with alot of pretty beefy routers so there is about 600 interfaces on each machine, where i would like to graph at tops 100 of them, the 100 with a description :) And thanks for a great monitoring tool! Getting billing data out of Observium via SQL

I'm looking to get the billing data out of observium for monthly executive reviews. For some reason the CIO wants it in Excel (boo.) What I'm interested in mostly are the Avg in, Avg out, 95th in and 95th out for each billed circuit on a monthly basis. Fortinet Support

I wanted to start by saying Observium is so awesome! I wish I would of found it sooner! So I'm trying to add my Fortinet firewalls to Observium. I see that I can add specific MIBs for Fortigates, but I didn't see the latest D series on the list. I'm not exactly sure how to add the Fortigates. I'm unable to create a DNS entry for the firewall, and I know it's dependent on DNS. I'm very new and not exactly sure how to go about this addon. Can anybody shed some light and point me in the right direction. Also, I read that if a custom MIB wasn't written for the device that one can donate. How do I go about doing that? I would love to see the latest Fortinets(and older of course) in Observium. Cheers,

New user - network topo map question

New observium user with question on topology map. Under device>ports>map .... I have one device with 5 ports pointing to their respective far end ports. Three arrows are gray (gig-eth), one arrow is blue (gig-eth) and one arrow is red (tengig-eth). What is the difference between a gray arrow, blue arrow and red arrow? lcjones

device_ucd_load Graphs

Hi, Hoping someone can help. Since upgrading to the latest version using the SVN the device_ucd_load graphs have stopped generating and are no longer displayed within Observium. We use an external website and link to these graphs so our clients can view the server load and it'd be handy to get them working again. Were they disabled/removed in the latest version? Is there any way to get them back? Thanks

FreeBSD Instalation

How, everyone. I'd like to know if someone there has Observium installed in a FreeBSD server. I have one Observium installed in a FreeBSD server, and other installed in a Ubuntu Server. The Ubuntu one works perfectly, but in my FreeBSD, there is no that Health tab, that shows me Processors information, Mempool information, Power information. That velocimeter icon,([image: Inline image 1]), doesn't shows up for me, I don't know if it can be some mib missing, but I don~t think so, cause I already installed net-snmp, I configured snmp.conf with snmpconf -i and etc... I don't know what else to do. Do someone there has a recipe, to make Observium works properly on FreeBSD? Graphing used RAM from free command

When looking at RAM usage, the number I've always cared the most about is the number from the "used" column and "-/+ buffers/cache" row when I run the "free" command. Like: # free total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 16389700 15802892 586808 0 622824 3345472 -/+ buffers/cache: 11834596 4555104 Swap: 4089852 51536 4038316 I don't see any graph that looks like it contains that information. I see the memory pool graph, but it show much higher usage that I actually have because of how Linux manages RAM. So, any thoughts on how I could get Observium to graph what I want? Thanks! Smokeping tab gone on holiday

Hi – our Smokeping tab has vanished mysteriously. Not sure exactly when but definitely within the last week. Billing Module and Bill Date

I had a question on how the Bill Date is implemented. Currently we have it set to 1 as our normal billing cycle is the 1st through last day of the month. However the process of getting the API data from Observium and getting that data into our Billing system is a manual process. The API data I'm getting is from the 'type=list' format which doesn't appear to accept start and end dates. I'd like to use this API call simply because it has the billing value of 95th already calculated per bill. My question is if our billing system makes that API call on April 3rd, what data does it get? Prevent creation of RRD files on ignored/disabled ports

I'm running Observium on a fairly large network with a few Cisco 7200's running 1000+ subinterfaces and 1000+ virtual-access interfaces. These interfaces are ignored with the "bad_if_regexp" configuration variable in config.php but RRD files are still generated and the "device total traffic" graph takes ages to generate which is not optimal. The RRD files are using lot's of diskspace and we're really only interested in uplinks instead of customer interfaces. Is there a way to prevent interfaces in the bad_if or bad_if_regexp to be polled altogether without writing RRD files? Kind regards, Remco Bressers Signet B.V.

traffic 0bps / 0pps

Hi, I'm running Observium 0.14.3.5094 on Debian 7, followed the installation guide. The problem is that the traffic, displayed under the ports overview, is 0bps / 0pps. When hovering over that port, or clicking on it, the graphs do display the traffic correctly. Some devices their ports do display the traffic number as well, but the majority doesn't. I can't figure out why the traffic on some ports is displayed correct, while it's not on all the others. I don't think it's not a problem on the devices being polled, because I'm running 2 observium versions for testing purposes (0.13.10.4585 & 0.14.3.5094), and on v13 the traffic for device X is displayed correctly, while on v14 the traffic for that device is 0bps/0pps on all ports (graphs work fine). And the other way around for device Y. These are Cisco and Juniper devices being polled. All the graphs work fine. I have attached these screenshots to clarify what I mean: The port graphs:

Host down and up every 5 min.

Good morning, I have a problem I can not solve. I have two installations of observium, CE and SUBSCRIPTION, on 2 different servers. My hosts are all down , 5 minutes after up. In both servers. When I go to check, no host had fallen, and neither appears in the logs instability. I installed another server, running only the SNMP and a dedicated link, and even then it falls and rises in 5 minutes. What can it be? All three devices are dedicated to Observium, 1 physical machine, and another virtual. The client host only with SNMP are physical. All in 3 diferents Datacenter. smokeping graphs in observium (loss of information)

Hello, I have a quick question about Smokeping integration with Observium. It's working but the graphs are displayed with less information. Is it possible for Observium to display the graphs in the same fashion as native Smokeping? For example, smoke goes "up" from the baseline, packet loss displayed in a different color according to percent loss. Polling Taking Longer than 5 minutes for a few devices

I have a few devices that take longer than 5 minutes to poll. Looking at the polling information Observium provides it reports 999.99s for two of the three and the third one reports 975.37s under Last Polled. I believe the result of taking to long o poll is the breaks I see in my graphs for only these three devices. These boxes have about 150 vlan interfaces and are fully populated 6509s. I have adjusted the poller-wrapper.py to 10 and $config['snmp']['max-rep'] = 10 right now. A 4 processor VM averages about 60 cpu utilization constantly. The Server's Disk IO Ops/sec average is about 110. Today I only have 52 out of 1300 devices loaded into it. Any suggestions to speed up the polling on these few boxes or is the only solution add another polling server and do odd even or something of that nature. Maybe there is another issue I'm not seeing? I have transit, customer, and core traffic interfaces descriptions setup and working. No peering interfaces have been defined. Peering interfaces menu items are disabled with $config['int_peering'] = 0; However, when overall_traffic is added to the $config['frontpage']['order'] array, "Overall Peering Traffic Today" and "Overall Transit & Peering Traffic This Month" headers are displayed with broken image placeholders that link back to the url/iftype/type=peering/ and url/iftype/type=peering%2Ctransit/ respectively. Not a big issue, but from a consistency standpoint, it would make sense to disable the overall peering traffic views if $config['int_peering'] = 0; is set. Matt

mysqld.sock error?

I have been recently seeing this error pop up, whenever trying to login to my observium instance, and was wondering if anyone had experienced this before. This is an install I did back around October of 2013 and other then expanding the hdd, a month or so ago, I havent really messed with the settings (the first time i saw this was about a week and a half ago or so). After searching on google a little bit, it seems like the socket trying to be leveraged is at location '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' yet when i do a search for '-type s', i only see '/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock'. The '/etc/mysql/my.cnf' file already lists "socket = /var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock" though. Should I just modify the my.cnf file to include '/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock'? This is the error I get: MySQL Error: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (111)

Problem: I have a Cisco Switch that is not showing the MAC addresses in Observium. I have configured SNMP as according to the IPV4 instructions on the main observium website. My other Cisco devices are showing MAC address information fine. I can do a show mac address-table and everything appears when SSH into the switch. Can someone please advise what I am missing or how to get observium to start showing the MAC addresses of this device? Observium as inventory mgmt?

Hello all, I've been playing around for the last week and want to say really nice work thus far. But I was wondering if anyone is using this as an inventory system that would be comparable to racktables? Basically allow the user to create a table with software versions acquired through the Unix agent module (not the rpm plugin as this ignores tar installs). From everything I've seen so far it looks like this is more focused on adding custom graphs and not simple text. Help - Syslog-NG

Hi all, I have an observium system running quite happily. I've tried to integrate the syslogging functionality but getting strange results. Not sure whether the problem lies with syslog-ng, PHP or the sucking of data into Observium. Let me explain: With syslog-ng started in foreground mode 'syslog-ng -Fevd' everything works as expected. I see syslog packets coming in via tcpdump, I see the log flash up on the terminal and it correctly routes into the right part of the Observium front end. With syslog-ng started as a daemon (the desired config setup), nothing gets to Observium. I can still see the syslog packets in tcpdump obviously but I'm blind as to what happens to the messages after that. One thing I have noticed is that when running syslog-ng in foreground mode, I see "Starting destination program; cmdline='/opt/observium/syslog.php'" in the startup messages and a corresponding process in the ps -lax output "php /opt/observium/syslog.php" With syslog-ng started as a daemon, I do not see this php process. Bit stuck as to where to look next. Has anyone seen this behavior before? Centos6.5 and standard packages and configs. How to disable the "Overall Peering" graph?

Vyatta snmpd errors in ports module

However, to stand a hope of getting it sorted I wondered if anyone could suggest what part of the ‘ports’ module could possibly cause an error like this in the snmpd of the Vyatta? Then I can try to take it up on the Vyatta forums, but at the moment I can’t even explain which I’m trying to poll when the error occurs because I don’t know what steps in the ports module are likely to cause this. All - When I receive an alert based on an alerting check, I get a box at the bottom of the alert that looks like images are supposed to be included, but they aren't able to resolve. Checking the email's html, there isn't a url included with the listed images. The html is attached. Any insight would be appreciated - Thanks, Matt

Observium Graph Issue . Draw Error .

Hello everyone , I have a problem regarding the drawing of the graph in observium . Snmpd is running , rrdcached is running . Hello , I have a problem with the connexion on the localhost via port 36602 . What i am trying to do is to generate graphs for postfix , mysql and apache. Is there any way to get the current noise in the event logs from mempool away? Basically every time discovery is run/rerun I get spurious "updated" events for everything. Hi, I have subscribed and installed the stable version of Observium using SVN. I would like to know if there is an option to turn on optical diagnostic information for Juniper network devices as the current graphs do not show this. I am mostly interested in TX and RX power levels. This information is available via snmp. I have currently added EX4500 and EX4550 switches to the monitoring. Thanks, Peter

When I tried this last (a year ago, ex4500) the data was not available via SNMP without extra scripts installed on the device. This may have been a limitation of my using SFP and not SFP+ on the device however. --Chris

Memory usage on ASR9k

Hi, This might be my lack of understanding of the memory pools' representations in Observium, or it might be a bug. There seems to be a significant difference in the memory being reported by Observium and that which is reported by the device. Here is the console output for the two processors (SP and RSP) along with the graph values from Observium: #sh mem sum location 0/0/CPU0 Physical Memory: 8192M total Application Memory : 8004M (5264M available) <- approx. 34% used Image: 59M (bootram: 59M) Reserved: 128M, IOMem: 0, flashfsys: 0 Total shared window: 347M #sh mem sum location 0/RSP0/CPU0 Physical Memory: 8192M total (4688M available) <- approx. 41% used Application Memory : 8002M (4688M available) Image: 61M (bootram: 61M) Reserved: 128M, IOMem: 0, flashfsys: 0 Total shared window: 133M The "Reserved" and "Image" ones are always 100% - but that's a different issue I think. What I'm more interested in is the RSP and SP "Processor" element, which both show very different amounts to the real usage. In fact, I can't even remotely line them up with anything on the box itself. So, any ideas or am I just reading this all wrong? Cheers! I was about to go write some php code to find a missing IPMI device via SNMP queries, and one of my coworkers suggested seeing if we can find it from Observium already? Hi! there is some form to create some alert using a specifc SNMP oid? Weirdness with a site with 32-bit ports

I am going through the sites and I noticed that on the overview page that nothing is showing in the traffic graph for one of our sites. But when I look at the ports themselves, they are showing traffic: Then when I go into port config, I see this: It looks like it stopped showing traffic on the 5th or 6th. Any ideas? IPMI values from server running VMWare

Until recently I've been able to retrieve values using IPMI on my servers running ESXi. This option now seems to have been removed? It's still available for my servers running Linux but not ESXi. Any specific reason for this? Is it something I can turn back on again? I'm thinking it's a "hardware" thing and not dependant on the OS it's running. Regards, Nic

I still can't get the classified port types (transit/peering/customer) to work properly. The main graph on the home page works but when I click the link, I get Total Graph for ports of type : Transit None found. Same with Peering. I have the text 'transit' and/or 'peering' in the description for the ports. It appears to be sort of working. just would like that drill down to work. MRV LX console servers

Hello list, I have a couple of MRV LX4000 console servers that I added to Observium. I do not care much about port utilisation but it is nice to know if one drops off the radar and get an alert. However, the boxes are not recognised by Observium and get this ugly question mark icon in the device list. A quick Google did not reveal anything related to these boxes and Observium, did anyone play around with adding these devices and get them recognised properly? They basically run a BusyBox Linux...
