strange numbers from nortel switch

Hi I'm trying to setup Observium to poll all of our switches, and so far I just love it. Great job guys! I hope to convince the management to subscribe soon, but for now we'll have to do with the community version. Let me try to explain my issue. I am polling a dual stack of Nortel Baystack 5510-24T switches using snmp v2c. All ports of unit 1 and ports 1 - 6 of unit 2 look fine. The graphics (bits/sec) for port 7 to 24 of unit 2 are strange though. Port 7 is not used, no device is connected to it at all. The average traffic according to the graphs is around 30Gbit/s. All other ports after port 7 show the exact same numbers. So first I tried to reset all port statistics on the switch. The graphs showed 0 bits/s for a few minutes, but then after let's say 30 minutes it shows a current bandwidth of 8Gbit/s. I tried deleting the device from Observium and added it again, but it seems that all counters are still there. When I look at the port using telnet, all counters are 0. I know that this switch is not in the supported devices list, but as far as I know the default snmp pollings should provide correct numbers for bandwidth statistics, no? Adding Bind9 stats into Observium for trending/graphing?

Hello, I do not see a away to search the mailing list so please excuse me if this question has been asked before. I've recently (as in the last 3 or 4 days) began configuring Observium for the purpose of getting some good trending data out of my bind servers. I noticed in the demo, there is an APP drop down, and BIND is listed as one of the supported applications. I am having a difficult time figuring out how to get Observium to monitor my bind servers however. I do get LOTS of great throughput data and cpu usage so that will be very helpful. I have installed the bind9-snmp setup from bayour.com and am abe to read bind statistics using SNMP, but I have no idea how to get these values to be polled and graphed by Observium. If setting up the bind9-stats through SNMP is not the proper way to graph the bind stats, can someone please point me in the right direction? Thanks, Ricardo Meleschi

efficiency in SNMP-requests

Hey everyone, first of all I want to tell you, that I really like observium. It's a great tool and I really enjoy using it. There is one disadvantage, that a colleague of mine from our networking department told me. We get log-Entries in our firewall for each SNMP-request. Would it be possible to do a single SNMP request to get all Data? Is there a config setting? Or is it planned to do this? It would really help, because I had to adjust the interval to a longer time as a first measure. LDAP Auth not able to use level 10

Hi, I've set up the ldap authentication with AD. The LDAP binding , Search and Authentication is all succesfull. even the group matching is perfect. But I'm not able to provide the group a level 10 authentication. When authenticating the user in the correct group can't see any device. Greetings.

Disable BGP Alerts/Polling for Single Router

Hello, I have an acme packet net-net 4000. In the version 0.14.2.5010 our acme packet device is coming up as a generic device. Was this device included in the support for Acme Packets or do I need to update something on our acme packet device? Adding MIBs

We have several SonicWALL firewalls that are SNMP capable but do not work when you try to add them via ./add_device.php. Since I was able to add our 2400 series SonicWALLs to Observium I just assume there is a file missing somewhere. Unable to add standby Cisco ASA

Hi, I'm trying to add the standby Cisco ASA firewalls we have in our active/standby failover pairs. I am able to add our ASA-SM (ASA service modules), but not the "normal" ASA's or PIX firewalls. Unfortunately, a Cisco ASA failover pair shares the same "sysName" and "snmpEngineID". This is not configurable on the ASA firewalls. When I try to add a standby ASA (with a different hostname / IP address) I get the following error: Already got device with SNMP-read sysName (xxxxxxxxxxx) and 'snmpEngineID' = xxxxxxxxxxx (xxxxxxxxxxx). I see that this is because of a check in "functions.php". Is there any workaround you can think of to allow us to add the standby devices? It is essential for us to monitor them, and we were also hoping to use Observium as our hardware inventory database (which is now missing all standby ASA's). Regards, Erik

APC InRow Cooling support

CentOS authentication timeout

Hello, I started to have an intermittent issue with users being forced to login when they browse the webpage. I have the timeout settings defined in php.ini: session.use_cookies = 1 session.use_only_cookies = 1 session.cookie_lifetime = 259200 session.cookie_path = / session.cookie_domain = session.cookie_httponly = Socket timeouts are set to the following in php.ini: default_socket_timeout = 259200 I did have a lifetime cookie set to 0 and socket_timeout to 14400. Users that had the issue had a cookie. My authentication mechanism is AD-LDAP. Any other advice on where to look to find out why users are being forced to login intermittently? I have had a hard time tracking this issue down since it is so intermittent. Thanks, Mike

Persistence of data in Observium

Hello, Recently our network team upgraded one of our devices. Upon doing so some of the ifIndexes changed on the device. So we lost some history on some of the ports where the ifindex changed. Another situation, we use the port description mapping for tracking transit, peering, core ports. We moved a peer from one switch to another in one of our ports to upgrade the capacity. When we did that we lost the history in the aggregate graph because the old port doesn't have the port description anymore denoting it is a peer. Any tips on how to keep history on ports in those situations? I was thinking of outputting the data to a separate RRD or database. But, then I don't get to use the awesome observium interface to view that data. Thanks, Mike

Transit link not working

On the front page I've enabled the overall <class> traffic today. But when I click on the Transit Graph to drill down to iftype/type=transit/, I get "None Found". Ping settings don't apply when set in config.php

Hi Guys, I've just updated our version to the subscription one and found several of our devices now show in Observium as going up and down. After a big of digging it looks like this is because their latency is around the 50ms mark and they fluctuate up and down around 5ms so the default ping timeout times out. I tried setting the following in config.php but the behaviour did not change. Ping Settings $config['ping']['timeout'] = 500; # timeout in ms $config['ping']['retries'] = 6; # how many times to retry the query I added a bit of code to the debug to print out the values of $timeout and $retries in the isPingable function and found that it didn't matter what was set in config.php the values would always end up at $timeout=50 and $retries=1. I set them manually in the function just above $sleep and it kicked in and worked and the up/down notifications behaved as they used to. Have I goofed up the config.php somehow (I used the same as above) or is something else NQR somewhere? All other options in config.php seem to work and php -l config.php returns "No syntax errors detected in config.php" Cheers, Nathan Phelan

Hi All, I'm sure this was discussed a while back but I've searched the mailing list and can't find anything. Is MAC accounting still supported in Observium or is this feature present in the code but awaiting removal? If it is support how are people using it? I am testing on Cisco IOS devices and its not working very well for me. I have configure under a physical interface the following: ip accounting output-packets ip accounting mac-address input ip accounting mac-address output I have some juniper MX tin in the lab I can test. SVN working but not working

I finally got svn to work by proxying it through a server with actual internet access. I love how I have to make an end-run around the network guys so I can give them what they want. Hilarious. Anyway I did the svn co http://..... Blah blah and it seemed to work properly. Then I run discovery and get this. (poller does the same thing) ./discovery.php -h dc-m-sitelink svn: '/opt/observium' is not a working copy Observium v0.SVN.ERROR Discovery Do I need to wipe and reinstall? I'd prefer not to as I have ~50 hosts set up and everything is otherwise working well. Scaling Observium with Rancid, Smokeping, and Syslog-ng

Anyone have suggestions or real world experiences they could share scaling Observium with Rancid, Smokeping, and Syslog-ng. I have about 1000 router/switches in my network that equate to about 30k of interfaces. Half the interfaces will probably be down, although I'm not sure that makes a difference. Basically I'm wondering if I should break out my tools to individual VMs and use something like NFS for Observium to be able to see Rancid,Smokeping, and Syslog-ng data. ad ldap config brings up a blank page

I'm hoping someone could provide a little assistance helping me debug this problem. I'm seeing a blank home page when I change the authentication type to ldap. As soon as I put it back to mysql the home page displays. I'm using a working ldap config currently be used on a Ubuntu 12.04. I'm attempting to migrate over to a corporate supported RHEL 6 box. Email alerts - Duration

Is the "Duration" field in email alerts working as intended? I offlined a BGP peer to force an alert and the first ALERT message says "Duration 6 days, 16h 59m 55s" If this is trying to tell me the last time it alerted it is incorrect, because this router was offline on Monday for maintenance. Additionally when it came back up (under 10 minutes) I would expect the duration to tell me how long the alert was active, instead I get this: 6 days, 17h 9m 44s. That's the 10 minutes (two polling cycles) the device was off. But where is the rest of that value coming from? Since the subnet that our Observium server is blocked from the internet, I am unable to directly update using subversion. Anyone know a way to relay the subversion from svn à me with a windows client à the observium server? I SVN d/led the latest stable with Tortoise then FTPed it to the server but it seems to have broken some stuff. Transit weirdness

I have had our net guy fill in the ifdescr with the appropriate string (I think) on some of the devices in order to get things to start working, but I'm seeing some weirdness. For example the string is set to: Transit: [200Mbit] {ATT-BKEC.946484 - Vz-46.KFGS.300721} And on the front page, the Overall Transit Traffic graph is showing up: But when I click on the graph to drill down, I get this: Total Graph for ports of type : Transit None found. Any ideas? I'm on the CE version. Smokeping Integration

We've got smokeping up and running on the same server as observium and followed the instructions for integration. Graphs are displaying correctly in the smokeping web interface but observium is having "error drawing graph" issues. Ping tab has been added so it is reading the smokeping config correctly. RRD's are formatted based on the name of the host (using _ instead of . since smokeping doesn't support that), but still no joy. Any ideas? All - Hello. We are evaluating Observium for our enterprise network metrics and are pretty impressed with the community package. However, before we invest in the subscription version, I have a few questions. 1. Are there any reporting/analysis functions in the subscription version? Our CIO is interested in measuring 95% on all of our regional office site links in order to analyze capacity planning. 2. How mature is the alerting in the subscription version? Is it possible to configure alerting based on anything other than a percentage of link speed and interface up/down? 3. NetApp Clustered OnTap

I’ve been testing the community edition for a few months and have been pretty impressed. I’m hoping to get the subscription version soon. Even small amounts of money can sometimes be difficult to spend with university bureaucracy. We have a few NetApp filers. The first is a bit older and is detected correctly and Observium gives quite a bit of useful information about it. The second is running the newer Clustered OnTap OS, and Observium has no idea what it is, doesn’t recognize it as a NetApp device or assign the correct icon, and doesn’t pull any data from it. Anyone have any idea if this is more up to date in the subscription version? Is Observium capable of measuring/calculating the 95% rule on interfaces? Also is it possible to change scaling on ports, for example even though one of my customer ports is set on the device at 100Mbps, the link itself is only capable of 20Mbps. Dan, consider lighting up a websvn instance in parallel to obs, pointed at your rancid depot. it’s got a nice layout, and you get a bit more in the granularity toolbag (e.g. permissions). our auditors love it. you lose a bit of the SPoG effect, but really it’s an ideal drill-down. aside: top 3 wish list (e.g., after obs alerting gets finished): - eigrp feature-parity with ospf/bgp - f5, palo & checkpoint device support (rancid is weak here also, so obs is in good company /grin/ ) - auto-thresholding sexiness (a math-inclined list member offered to contribute some framework for this a while back?) alerting wishlist items: - bark at me when the route count of established routing peer sessions (esp. bgp) changes from $baseline - bark at me for threshold deviations, esp. unnaturally lower-bound ones (e.g., ckt that normally pumps nMbps flatlines to zero) (tells me my edge peers probably did something stupid that they will blame me for anyway. knowing about it first helps. LOL). ps: - scale of syslog ingestion (or possibly the regurgitation thereof) might warrant some love. 7MM/day entries in volume makes for dreadfully long page loads. - anyone have the mysql agent script poking at an instance of mariadb? are your results in obs fully populated? Is it possible to add a new kind of device that is only polled with ping ? The primary goal is to know when distant server (hosted by partners) aren't reachable without asking to have access to their snmp daemon and community ... I imagine that it can be a huge work because it needs to bypass a lot of code but you could have think about it ... ? To be simple for everyone, this kind of device can be a new sort of server but without any snmp information (no device panel / no ports panel, etc...) and just be polled by the ping. And when a hosts is down the alerter send a mail / trap and the index.php put an information box to warn on "device down" like any others hosts. hi, We are very pleased by the use of the subscription version so far. At the moment we are monitoring 3.600 ports and have around 5000 alerts but the goal is to reach around 40.000 ports. Will this be a problem? I already see cpu load whenever i add a host with over 500 ports that is not evenly distributed if increase the cores of my machine. Please advise and keep up the great work. Noticed some new sensor alerts that popped up by default a few revs back now. Super sweet, firstly, so nice work guys. Secondly, the defaults naturally aren't quite right, ie 0. Is it possible to set a default sensor type by device/platform/OS rather than individually? For example, system voltage on one of our routers has a default of 2 to 2.7v, while it is actually running at 23.5 and thus throwing alerts. Can we set all networking devices or iOS switches or iOS version 12.?? to have the same defaults? [BUG] I got a blank page

Hi all ! Since a little modification on the config.php (adding a filter in [bad_if]) I got a blank page on my enterprise http://observium and the "./discovery.php -h none" doesn't output any information ... (usually it outputs the version - in green) I got the same problem last week when I updated the svn folder with CRON that force me to revert to an older version of my server ... Of course I reboot all the services (apache2, mysql ...) and I have upgraded the memory limit in the php.ini (like mentioned in the Observium FAQ) ... Any clues ? Somebody got the same problem ? In our environment the snmp location is filled with some kind of customer ID. Like: U100432. Traffic Bills Oddity

We're using the traffic bills module and are a "paid" customer. However, sometime in October, customers that we bill for usage over a wireless link (using UBNT kit), only show 0.00. Traffic can still be seen on the port on the traffic bills screen, but collection of the data seems stuck. There are multiple customers per UBNT node and they are all seeing the same issue. Traffic bills on switches and routers appear fine however. Any idea where to start on trying to fix, or diagnose this. Matt

Port Properties Alert Question and Odd Behavior

Is there a way to see all Ports that have been disabled for altering? I enabled email alerts in config.php for port percentage, but seeing some odd behavior with the percentage portion with the physical interfaces inside a etherchannel interface. Below are a couple emails I received. The bandwidth mentioned in the email is more than the physical interface. Is there another option I need to turn on or off to account for this behavior? Any suggestions are appreciated. This physical interface didn't go over 444M. The port channel have 8 physical link in it. Port saturation threshold alarm: cisco.switch.com on GigabitEthernet3/1 Rates:1.63Gbps/11.6kbps(163/0) >85% of 1Gbps Another email This physical interface hit a 1G. Google MAPS Integration

Unfortunately not being a Developer I'm finding it hard to get my hands on documentation to implement the use of google maps in the overview page. Device Alerts that won't go away

Hello all, I have attached an image of the alerts in question, the names and locations have been removed. It only happens on these two servers out of 20+ different servers. A summary of this would be: * ShoreTel OS Logo * ShoreTel OS definition * Added SonicWall firewall CPU OID and related graphing * Added Sonicwall firewall active sessions discovery and graph definition for this To achieve this, there are a couple of extra .inc.php files and some addition snippets added to existing files. I understand that you prefer code submissions through wget from a website and I can arrange this, but firstly would like to know if you are interested in adding my code (following a review of course) to the product. Wait time to access subscribed version

Hi all Hopefully someone here can point me in the right direction. We put through payment for the subscribed version of Observium on Tuesday evening, and very shortly afterwards I emailed Adam with the encrypted htpassword line that he required to add to the SVN. However we have not had any word back on if this has been done or not (and testing, it seems to deny us so I am guessing not). I emailed a chase today, but I was wondering if there was a wait time on getting access, as I don't want to keep bugging when I should be waiting. Data Fetch Failure

Hi all, I've gone through the normal procedure for getting the observium_agent working for mysql and apache, but even though I've added the config values to the http.conf (centos) I get a data fetch failure when running the apache script manually. Poller hung by misbehaving device/net-snmp

Hello, One of the devices I'm polling began misbehaving (its SNMP stack couldn't cope with uptime > 4294967296 seconds). This caused the Observium poller to hang indefinitely. The underlying cause seems to be an issue with net-snmp, however this did cause other devices to not be polled and eventually exhausted the file descriptor limit (at which point, several thousand php processes were running). I'm not sure of the best way to protect observium from net-snmp failing; as a very dirty hack I've replaced the following line in the config: - $config['snmpget'] = "/usr/bin/snmpget"; + $config['snmpget'] = "/usr/bin/timeout 1m /usr/bin/snmpget"; I also tried setting snmpget's -t option, but this did not have an effect. This is on the community version, but I believe the subscription version would be affected too (I've not seen anything in the change logs that would indicate otherwise). Hi Gurus, I'm not good in linux but my boss ask me to install observium in our RHEL box. I followed this link http://www.observium.org/wiki/RHEL_Installation#Introduction then I stop here. (I have a fresh install RHEL then i just follow everything) My comments are in open and closed parenthesis. Copy the default configuration file and edit it for your system: (I copy the config.php in my observium folder where the extracted folder was. Is this right?) cp config.php.default config.php Add an entry for fping to config.php as the location is different on RHEL: (I edit the copied file) $config['fping'] = "/usr/sbin/fping"; Edit config.php. Change the options to reflect your installation. Setup the MySQL database and insert the default schema: (I really stop here because when i type this in shell i had this error -bash: php: command not found) php includes/update/update.php It is OK to have some errors in the SQL revisions up to 006. Multiple communities/hosts for same IP address (localhost)

Hello I'm trying to setup a monitoring system for two networks that have several devices each (mostly switches) behind a NAT router; unfortunately I am limited on the ports, so had to use SSH tunnelling from the Observium machine to each of the networks in order to access all the devices. I followed the instructions from http://vfamilyserver.org/blog/2013/03/snmp-hell-part-1-proxy-to-multiple-de… setup the SNMP proxying and it all works quite well, I can snmpwalk each of the devices behind one of the two NAT routers only by changing the community name (haven't yet setup the second one). However, I'm not sure how/if it's possible for Observium to see the different devices - I've added the NAT router with add_device.php (I used command line rather than web interface due to SNMP running over TCP) and was recorded as 127.0.0.1 (which does make sense, as it's the tunnelled from the local host); then, when I tried to run the command with one of the other community strings, it returned an "Already got device 127.0.0.1". Further, although I haven't yet set it up, I will probably have the same problem when adding the tunnelled NAT router on the second network. Is there a configuration/workaround that would allow to differentiate between these multiple instances of what appears to be the same [local]host? Best regards Bogdan

Hi Guys, At midnight last night during the normal scheduled re-discovery we appear to have lost all historic data for all ports on a large number of our switches. I’m still checking them all but it appears to have affected all Cisco 2960G units (24 or 48 port). Data collection is working fine, but all history has gone, including all CPU, RAM, temperatures, fans, RPS Power etc. [cid:image001.png@01CF0F7A.BD8E4C80] There are no Eventlog entries for the devices for the last 24 hours, but there are some from a couple of days ago which read like this: [cid:image002.png@01CF0F7B.7D5A55E0] However, as I mentioned these events are from the 9th so a few days ago. Any ideas please? I can restore the RRDs from backup but I’d like to know why it’s done this otherwise I’ll just be restoring them again tomorrow morning ☺ Cheers! Enterasys Poller

Hello, I am working on evaluating Observium as a Cacti replacement for monitoring network devices and servers at my university. So far I have Observium working with all of our Cisco and Juniper gear as well as a few of the Linux boxes that I manage but seem to be having issues with getting everything working nicely with our Enterasys gear. Let me preface the below with stating that this project is absolutely wonderful and if I can get our Enterasys devices to play nicely we will be upgrading to the paid version. I understand that Enterasys is not officially supported so I have begun diving into the code base to see what needs to be done to write the poller modules myself. Does any one on the list have the ports poller fully working with an Enterasys device? Now, one of the things that I noticed with the Enterasys gear is that the ports poller module will continue running the snmpbulkwalk for the dot1qVlanCurrentEgressPorts mib until the user finally kills the poller. This appears to be an issue with the number of repetitions as the poller will continue walking the table for over an hour. Hello. Running Observium CE 0.13.10.4586. I've run into a strange situation with a single device that I am unable to discover and get added into observium's inventory. The device is an F5 Load-balancer. I have 51 other F5's all working beautifully, yet this one seems to be giving me grief for some reason when I try to discover it. Hello, my Name is Sascha Schaal. I´m a Developer for a medium sized ISP in Germany and former Nato IS-Admin. I would like make some contributions to Observium, which i think is one of the best approaches to a NMS in the Unix world together with Nagios. So i have 3 Things for you to offer, which i think could be a usefull addition to Observium. 1. Implementation of WSMan I could write a Subsystem for Observium to detect Devices and OS´s via the WSMan-Protocol. I think you must have came in contact with a Subset of this Protocol (CIM/SOAP) within the VMware API. This will require HTTP-POST´s to the Devices WSMan-Listener. These will contain SOAPed chunks of XML which tell the Listener to perform Task´s. You can then iterate through Classes on the WSMan-Provider which contain Perf-Data or Inventory Data and Stati of Devices/or Entitys. I have developed an easy to use complete OOP Subsystem written in Perl which i would like to convert to PHP for Observium. There are very few dependancy´s like LibXML2 and Data:UUID which i will try to resolve to turn it into PHP, i have some Idea's already. The best thing is the common Namespaces and Classes in WSMan will make Autodiscovery quite easy with lot of verbose Information to hand over to the User. It goes totaly along with ur approach to a NMS. Already WSMan capable Devices and OS´s are for example Unix via OpenWSMan, Microsoft Windows and Baseboard Management Controllers like Dell´s iDrac or HP`s iLO. WSMan has several advantages over SNMP which made the Nagios Dev's plan it for implementing. my GIT´s on that matter: https://github.com/rage1985/WSMAN--easy https://github.com/rage1985/check_wsman-Suite Which leads me dirctly to: 2. Discovery, Inventory and Monitoring of Windows OS Metrics The WSMan ( MS calls it WinRM) is more willing to talk than the SNMP Service on Windows. With the WSMan empowered Observium Nagio´s NS++ Client which has to be installed locally and needs a sh**load of config will look like a joke in comparison. For the Windows Admin WinRM Setup should be piece of cake. And i know where to find the Interesting Data, and i am willing to share. 3. Statistical Prediction and Forecasting using RRD´s Hold-Winters Algorithm. I´ve done this several times in my current occupation. Predicting Trends of both Linear and Non-Linear Sets of Data, togehter with Abberant Behavior Detection. I am willing to develope a subsystem for Observium to Predict Trend, Behavior for all the Data gathered in a scalable manner. But therefor i suggest to provide Graphs with fixed timeranges, in a new tab or seperate presantation. I suppose the most users don´t have a clue of the math behind statical analysation of Data. Time is always an important factor in forecasting , u just can´t tell from a month of gathered data what e.g. the traffic next year will look like. So we have to help him out in interpreting his Data. This is done best with sane and easy to read Graphs. I think this kind of Feature will be more than usefull. I will also help you out understanding the math, the meaning of several values we will stumble upon during developement. And last but not least the Documentation. Hi, We have the same "problem" when we restart the SNMP daemon ... it might be your case ? In fact, when the device actually reboot we have 3 mails : 1 down, 1 reboot and 1 up. But when the SNMP daemon restart / start we have only 1 mail : reboot. Clear switch stats

Hello. I would like to reduce the dotsize on the map to 1 but the config dosent seem to be going through. We have 155 devices in Observium at the moment and things can get a bit hard to look at. Especially when you get the big dots when you have a lot of devices grouped together. I googled the issue and I found an old mail discussion where it was said that it wasn't implemented yet. This is a quick summary of what I did: I copied observium_agent_xinetd to exim server /etc/xinetd.d/observium_agent Copied obserium_agent to exim server /usr/bin/observium_agent On exim server mkdir /usr/lib/observium_agent/ mkdir /usr/lib/observium_agent/local/ Enabled unix-agent module service xinetd restart chmod +x /etc/xinetd.d/observium_agent and /usr/bin/observium_agent I was able to telnet successfully from the observium server. Device status goes up and down (ping check) without having actual problems

Hi, Many of my devices goes Down/Up in Observium, while not having any actual problems. I monitor the same devices with Nagios (on the same server running Observium), so there's no connectivity problems between Observium and the monitored devices. Is this a general problem with the Ping monitoring or just something thats happens to me? And is there any way to disable ping and rely on snmp for up/down status of devices? Apache rewrite question

Billing quota data collection

Hello, I have some ports in my billing environment that are pushing data outbound only. The table bill_data is not collecting on the ports that are outbound only. When I look at the setup of the billing id, it has a direction of in. Is the only way to change that direction to out is by editing the database directly? What determines that direction? No Graphs or no error messages on the Chart

Hello there, I followed the installation guide on the website and I was able to install observium on Ubuntu 12.04 with no issues but I don't see any graphs at all. I followed all the possible fixes and it still didn't fix the problem. Following are the fixes that I have done so far. Real-time graphs not handling much about 1gbps (64-bit problem?)

Hi all, I'm running community edition v0.13.10.4585 and polling a few C6500's and a Cisco Nexus 7k. I have a number of 10GE interfaces and 10GE etherchannel bundles. The 5 minute graphing appears to work fine, the numbers are accurate when I compare against another monitoring system in production. However, when I run a "real time" poll against an interface or port-channel, of any duration (2 secs to 60 secs), the numbers never crack much above 1gbps, and there are often negative numbers. This suggests 64-bit counters are not being used or being interpreted correctly, but I haven't looked at the code. Has anyone else seen this? If so, did I mess something up with the install or is there something I can do? Thanks, -- Stephen

Network Dependencies

Hey guys, I am using the beta version of observium updated with svn with the server running in a datacenter in one US state and some of the SNMP agents in several others. It works perfect with one site, however the other has terrible internet connecting the site, and we lose vpn every once in a while. It immediately comes back, however when it polls while the site is down we receive 20-30 emails about devices being down when in fact it is the internet connection. Is there a way (or a plan in the future) to set dependencies on polling? Skip Memory Pools by regex

Hi, Can anyone tell me if it's possible to 'skip' polling of memory pools using their names (or regex) like you can with interfaces? I need to remove the "reserved" and "image" memory pools which are detected on all of our ASR9k units as they are all 100% (by nature) so are always red. Auto Discovered Device

Hi All In my Observium installation there is a new Device named "core" appearing every 6h (expect from the discover process) after 12h I have two of them and so on. If I delete them the reappear. I do not know from where this comes. Is there any way to find out how observium finds this device? If not, what's the best way to prevent Observium from automatically adding new devices ? Email Alerts with Mail/Sendmail Not Working

Hello, I'm having an issue getting Observium to send email alerts. 1. SysContact is set on the client device. 2. Sending test mail from monitoring server via sendmail on command line works fine. 3. Observium config.php has following configuration: $config['alerts']['email']['enable'] = TRUE; $config['alerts']['port']['ifdown'] = TRUE; $config['alerts']['email']['default'] = "notif…(a)xx.net"; $config['email_backend'] = 'mail'; $config['email_from'] = "MTR <mtr...(a)xx.net>"; $config['email_sendmail_path'] = '/usr/sbin/sendmail'; $config['alerts']['interval'] = 900; Setup a demo device, ensured it was polling and reporting correctly, then force-shutdown the demo. No mail sent by Observium. In mail.log, nothing reported (except for the successful test message I sent via command line). Maybe I'm misunderstanding. Will Observium send an email alert when a monitored device goes down, when configured this way? How can I achieve this? Many thanks in advance to anyone who can offer advice.

First, I must apologize for yet another question about "graphs not working". However, I have read everything I can find in the mail archives, in forums, and have reinstalled multiple times following the instructions exactly. Each time with the -nan listed for all data points. Verified permissions on the rrd and tmp folders and both match the same user/group as what everything is running as. I eventually resorted to installing and running everything as root to try and resolve permission errors. Once I figure out what's wrong I'll go back to std user. Sorry for the long email, but I wanted to include everything I know so far. NFSEN Integration Issues

Hello, The recent netflow question, reminded me that I needed to finish configuring nfsen on our box. I started going through the process of configuring observium, but no matter what I put in the config file, the suffix would not be removed. Digging into the code it looks like the logic was there in the /html/includes/functions.inc.php to check and use strstr to remove the domain name. But the string that was created was never actually used to open the rrd file. I have updated our functions.inc.php to use $nfsen_filename instead of $basefilename_underscored when creating the $nfsen_rrd_filename variable and the integration is now working. Who should I reach out to discuss our small changes to functions.inc.ph in regards to nfsen integration? Also is it okay to share code snippets of the latest svn branch on this list? Why you mention to use cron files ? Verify cron and your SNMP.conf file. It took a discovery poller and time before mine populated. Add a sysContact to your switch and add it on the device in observium. Click the gear when drilled down to a device. Just the switch one is required but both helps in rare cases. Also, my pleasure. Checking the Juniper docs it seems that there is MIB support in JUNIPER-VPN-MIB… If I snmpwalk 1.3.6.1.4.1.2636.3.26 I do indeed get the pseudowire status from the box… I put it here: http://pastebin.com/mMuhdKbA 123456789 is the sanitized pseudo wire ID… Not having looked at the Cisco MIB for this, is it remotely similar making this a doable adventure? When I add a device to Observium using the CLI it has no issue adding the device. However, when I run a ./poller.php -h all it says that there is no rrd directory. The graph is present without issue but there is no traffic. Pseudowire Cisco-Juniper monitoring

Just setup a hybrid Cisco to Juniper pseudo wire. It is detected by Observium just fine on the Cisco side, but not on the Juniper side showing a half circuit. Can I somehow get this working without reverting to a Cisco-Cisco setup? Regards Rutger

Mount points on windows

MIB development

I am by no means a developer. We currently use a lot of AudioCodes MediaPacks and Mediants for 911 VoIP solutions and are in need of monitoring the traffic from them. Is there anyone out there that would be willing to develop the observium MIB integration for us? We would gladly pay if need be and supply the MIBs. snmp and unix-agent question

It might sounds stupid but I wanted to ask anyway. :-) The same way the snmp works for distro and parsing the distro data, using: extend .1.3.6.1.4.1.2021.7890.1 distro /usr/bin/distro is there a way to use the same or similar for unix-agent ? And parse all the unix-agent data plus any local scripts through snmp ? The purpose to this is to parse the information of workstations behind multiple local networks with one single IP seeing the internet on every lan. So I can use NAT/port forwarding to get different snmpd ports for every workstation on one IP, but I cannot use unix-agent. Is there a way? Thanks in advance, Chris

Database Query option in footer

Hello, There used to be a database query option in the footer of the page that told you what database queries were used to build the page. I can't seem to find that option in the configuration options. Is that option to have that still available? I used that to see the relationships between the database tables. graphing question

Hi guys, I have a question on graphing. Last week I took some screen shots of our graphs for a specific simulation and then checked again this week for the exact same time periods and the numbers are the same, but the graphs are different. How does the graphing work exactly? In this first picture, we were wondering why the 225.05k isn't showing on the graph. It only goes up to 40k: [cid:image001.jpg@01CEF109.7988A100] When I checked this exact same graph with the same date and time stamp a week later, the numbers are the exact same, but the graph has changed although still doesn't go up to 225.05k, but does go up higher to 75k: [cid:image002.jpg@01CEF109.7988A100] Any help or insight is greatly appreciated! I installed JPgraph and don't have the warning but for some reason the Graphs stay blank. Running fresh install of Ubuntu 13.10 I deleted the hole observium folder together with Apache webserver (I imagined I missed a step somewhere or similarly) And then reinstalled from fresh Still cant get the graphs to show. SVN Errors - Paid Subscription

My apologies if this has been answered, but I searched and did not find the answer in the archives or the documentation. I'm also a Windows admin and not nearly as familiar with linux or the apache web server so I've been fumbling around the internet quite a bit to get this going. Ubuntu 13.04 Observium Revision 13.10.4585 Followed Ubuntu Installation page exactly. Most everything is working thus far, but from what I've found online, at least one of the items that isn't working was fixed in later versions. I paid the subscription and submitted a username / password hash. After receiving the confirmation email from Adam I tried to use the "svn checkout http://svn.observium.org/svn/observium/trunk/ observium" command to download the latest version. However, I get a couple error messages and I'm wondering if I need to configure the svn client before it will work. Or I may even be entering the username / password incorrectly? Below is the error messages that I receive whether I use an incorrect username/password combo or the one I submitted. "svn: E175002: Unable to connect to a repository at URL 'http://svn.observium.org/svn/observium/trunk' " and "svn: E175002 OPTIONS of 'http://svn.observium.org/svn/obserium/trunk' : could not read status line: connection was closed by server (http://svn.observium.org)" Thanks guys, love the product so far! Hi All, I want to update my Observium install for which I would normally run `svn update` however I haven't updated since the subscription scheme was initiated. Firstly, I'm happy with the subscription option, it's a worthy cause so I will be paying my 100 squid tomorrow or the day after. In the mean though if I run `svn update` now (I'm in a rush to update), will I just hit an svn authentication error and it won't update, or will it update then shit the bed? I don't want to fuck my perfectly happy instance of Observium and the funds aren't mine for a couple of days until the higher ups give it to me. I'm happy to wait though. Cheers, James.

Billing aggregated links not working

Hi, We having problems with 95% billing with 2 ports. The graphs are just fine but the 95% percentile value keeps being 0 bpps. billing-calculate.php shows: 12/01/13 @ 00:00:00 to 12/31/13 @ 23:59:59 CDR 90Mbps 0bps 0% Updated! Updated history! Today I upgraded to latest revision but does not fix it either. Other customers are working fine but they do not have combined/multiple links in the billing module. - Gerwin

Ubuntu 13.10 Install

Hi Guys, I got my observium working on 13.10. Instead of "Allow from All" in apache, they now need "Require IP", so my config now has the following in the Directory: <Directory "/opt/observium/html/"> Options FollowSymLinks MultiViews AllowOverride All Require ip 192.168 </Directory> Seems to work then. This is all based on the instructions on the wiki page. I will shout if I find more broken things and how to fix. Cheers, Pieter

How to enable bulkwalk?

I'm probably missing something really obvious, but how do you get Observium to use bulkwalk instead of walk? Currently using revision 4586. Trying to get poller times down, running: poller.php -h 51 -d to debug, and it sticks on this command: /usr/bin/snmpwalk -v2c -c 'COMMNAME' -OQUs -m IF-MIB -M /opt/observium/mibs 'udp':'x.x.x.x':'161' ifXEntry Which makes sense, as there's an awful lot of interfaces on that particular device. Running that command manually, using time, gives me: real 2m35.743s user 0m0.326s sys 0m0.168s Replacing /usr/bin/snmpwalk with /usr/bin/snmpbulkwalk and running again gives me: real 0m14.914s user 0m0.080s sys 0m0.038s I'd much rather have this take 15 seconds than 110. I could have sworn I saw something somewhere about setting some different snmpwalk flags, but I can't find anything in the docs, the faqs, the archives, the googles. But it's Friday, so, again, I'm probably missing something obvious. Thanks.

If I remember correctly, we use bulkwalk by default unless it's blacklisted by the OS type, if we saw it didn't fully support it... Ideas on Packet Loss?

Attached is a picture of one device in the network that keeps throwing a fit. I regularly get the notice that it is down (Netscreen 204) and that there is packet loss. Now I think that the two issues may be different. When I "get clock," I show UP 1741 hours. Is this an issue with Observium? If so, I don't know how to change that. I have my Observium server in the same rack as the device in question. Otherwise, it's something with my hardware-obviously. I know that I may feel the wrath of Adam, but I'm trying to narrow down what ISN'T the issue. Support of Lexmark printers

Status: Currently no subscription. Hello! we have a bunch of Lexmark printers spread around the entire company. We are looking for a software to monitor the remaining toner capacity. I have tested Observium. A real nice software. However we got only the typical information like CPU, storage or RAM usage. No information about toner. Toggle total view in graphs

Hi, we have a couple of WAN ports that are monitored based on the port description (WAN: xyz). Before the actual port graphs there is a *Total Graph for ports of type WAN* view. How can i toggle the total graph view on/off? Thank you. Regards, Christian
