SVN Errors - Paid Subscription

My apologies if this has been answered, but I searched and did not find the answer in the archives or the documentation. I'm also a Windows admin and not nearly as familiar with linux or the apache web server so I've been fumbling around the internet quite a bit to get this going. Ubuntu 13.04 Observium Revision 13.10.4585 Followed Ubuntu Installation page exactly. Most everything is working thus far, but from what I've found online, at least one of the items that isn't working was fixed in later versions. I paid the subscription and submitted a username / password hash. After receiving the confirmation email from Adam I tried to use the "svn checkout http://svn.observium.org/svn/observium/trunk/ observium" command to download the latest version. However, I get a couple error messages and I'm wondering if I need to configure the svn client before it will work. Or I may even be entering the username / password incorrectly? Below is the error messages that I receive whether I use an incorrect username/password combo or the one I submitted. "svn: E175002: Unable to connect to a repository at URL 'http://svn.observium.org/svn/observium/trunk' " and "svn: E175002 OPTIONS of 'http://svn.observium.org/svn/obserium/trunk' : could not read status line: connection was closed by server (http://svn.observium.org)" Thanks guys, love the product so far! Updating from before the subscription scheme

Hi All, I want to update my Observium install for which I would normally run `svn update` however I haven't updated since the subscription scheme was initiated. Firstly, I'm happy with the subscription option, it's a worthy cause so I will be paying my 100 squid tomorrow or the day after. In the mean though if I run `svn update` now (I'm in a rush to update), will I just hit an svn authentication error and it won't update, or will it update then shit the bed? I don't want to fuck my perfectly happy instance of Observium and the funds aren't mine for a couple of days until the higher ups give it to me. I'm happy to wait though. Cheers, James.

Billing aggregated links not working

Hi, We having problems with 95% billing with 2 ports. The graphs are just fine but the 95% percentile value keeps being 0 bpps. billing-calculate.php shows: 12/01/13 @ 00:00:00 to 12/31/13 @ 23:59:59 CDR 90Mbps 0bps 0% Updated! Updated history! Today I upgraded to latest revision but does not fix it either. Other customers are working fine but they do not have combined/multiple links in the billing module. - Gerwin

Ubuntu 13.10 Install

Hi Guys, I got my observium working on 13.10. Instead of "Allow from All" in apache, they now need "Require IP", so my config now has the following in the Directory: <Directory "/opt/observium/html/"> Options FollowSymLinks MultiViews AllowOverride All Require ip 192.168 </Directory> Seems to work then. This is all based on the instructions on the wiki page. I will shout if I find more broken things and how to fix. Cheers, Pieter

How to enable bulkwalk?

I'm probably missing something really obvious, but how do you get Observium to use bulkwalk instead of walk? Currently using revision 4586. Trying to get poller times down, running: poller.php -h 51 -d to debug, and it sticks on this command: /usr/bin/snmpwalk -v2c -c 'COMMNAME' -OQUs -m IF-MIB -M /opt/observium/mibs 'udp':'x.x.x.x':'161' ifXEntry Which makes sense, as there's an awful lot of interfaces on that particular device. Running that command manually, using time, gives me: real 2m35.743s user 0m0.326s sys 0m0.168s Replacing /usr/bin/snmpwalk with /usr/bin/snmpbulkwalk and running again gives me: real 0m14.914s user 0m0.080s sys 0m0.038s I'd much rather have this take 15 seconds than 110. I could have sworn I saw something somewhere about setting some different snmpwalk flags, but I can't find anything in the docs, the faqs, the archives, the googles. But it's Friday, so, again, I'm probably missing something obvious. Thanks.

If I remember correctly, we use bulkwalk by default unless it's blacklisted by the OS type, if we saw it didn't fully support it... Ideas on Packet Loss?

Attached is a picture of one device in the network that keeps throwing a fit. I regularly get the notice that it is down (Netscreen 204) and that there is packet loss. Now I think that the two issues may be different. When I "get clock," I show UP 1741 hours. Is this an issue with Observium? If so, I don't know how to change that. I have my Observium server in the same rack as the device in question. Otherwise, it's something with my hardware-obviously. I know that I may feel the wrath of Adam, but I'm trying to narrow down what ISN'T the issue. Status: Currently no subscription. Hello! we have a bunch of Lexmark printers spread around the entire company. We are looking for a software to monitor the remaining toner capacity. I have tested Observium. A real nice software. However we got only the typical information like CPU, storage or RAM usage. No information about toner. Stable vs Trunk

As it turns out, waiting for a bit of software to feel un-buggy enough to call stable is a little bit like chasing a magic dragon in a pharmaceutically-enhanced dream, a largely unattainable goal. It's a little difficult to gauge stability when we have half a dozen commits per day! Are any of you using the stable branch, and if so, how often and under what conditions would you want me to merge changes? adam.

duplicate system name

Hello, my observium lab was on 0.12.10.3399. I have some problem with my graphs but it's not a problem i just did a fresh install on new server with last observium version 0.13.10.4721. The tutorial was great and my install work perfect. When i start to add my devices i had some error. Some device have the same system name and when i tri to add them, the 2nd one don't work. "Already got device with SNMP-read sysName (system.name)" I didn't get this on my lab. billing module not loading three javascript files

Hi all, In my Observium I have issues with the billing graphs where only the quick graphs are loading correctly. The browser inspector shows: Failed to load a resource : A server with the specified hostname cannot be found : http:<my hostname>js/bootstrap-loader.js Failed to load a resource : A server with the specified hostname cannot be found : http:<my hostname>js/bootstrap-tab.js Failed to load a resource : A server with the specified hostname cannot be found : http:<my hostname>js/billing.js It looks like the ‘/‘ after the hostname is missing… Tried to find where this is set and found three files in html/pages/ called: bill.php.inc bills.php.inc packages.inc.php Manually adding a ‘/‘ there does not solve the problem, and then I’m at the end of my l33t observ1um debug skills. Choosing an “transfer graph” gives a “Failed to load resource: the server responded with a status of 500” in the inspector for the graph after the other three above, but it might be totally unrelated. Quick graphs work fine. Anybody encounter this too? regards, Rutger

As this is only an issue when adding certain devices, we could make this a commandline option to addhost.php. Alert notmatch help

I would like to run an alert for disk space usage on all of our machines, but want to not alert on our /backup drives (They get alerted at 90%). What do I need to put in the entity field to achieve this? I see theexample in the wiki for mempool_descr match *processor for your example memory check, but it's unclear where mempool_descr comes from. What would be the equivalent for the disk mount point?

Can't get alert to trigger

We are just now setting up our alerts for the first time and cannot get even our most basic one to alert successfully. We added an alert checker applied to all devices and all entities. The condition is storage_perc gt 80. We then regenerated our alerts and the alert was assigned successfully to all of our devices. On the alert page that shows a summary of the alert and the devices that it belongs to, I see all of our devices listed and all of them have a status of OK even though one of them is currently sitting at 87% utilization. If I mouse over the "state" column for that entity, it confirms that it is at 87 right now. What are we doing wrong? Why isn't this alert triggering?

Disabled ports

On the devices configuration I disabled the ports (polling & alerts), but they still show on my home page. I have removed the devices and re-added them, but the issue persists. Alerting in the Open Source Version

Evening all, I have a Dell 2162DS KVM essentially a rebranded Avocent, have MIB, and the FAQs say its not as easy as "adding a mib" :p I honestly do not mind learning / breaking and getting a bollocking for breaking Observium in trying to get this to work so I can potentially help others :p Who wants to show/tell me where to start and Ill start poking :) Observium sees the device, so thats a good start :-) -- Kind regards, Chris

Non-snmp Devices

Hello, Is it possible to add non-snmp devices? Say I need to monitor a specific website for uptime but don't have snmp level access. I looked up the services check however from what I understand it still relies on the device being added the usual way which requires snmp. Assuming I can't add non-snmp devices, could someone point me in the right direction on extending Observium to add this functionality? Ultimately, I want 4 monitors: ping, tcp protocol checks (custom ports), http(s) (simple or with response analysis) and ssh. If I can do that, then graphing the results will be trivial. I realize there are other tools that have these features but I prefer the Observium interface. Cheers, Cory

Unable to map aut_ldap_groups

Hi, I´m using the ldap mechanism to auth against our AD. So far I can log in but unable to see any graphs or devices. Apparently the group: $config['auth_ldap_groups']['ObserviumAdmins']['level'] = 10; are not mapped. However, the group "ObserviumAdmins" is present in AD and my username is member of this group. The auth_ldap_groupbase and auth_ldap_group is also correct. Is there anything else I have to take into consideration? Christian

Hello, I have one Juniper MX480 with 40 * 10G ports. The router push more than 150G and more than 100G on one IRB interface. Problems populating graphs

I'm trying to setup an airport extreme. I think I've successfully set it up both from the command line with add_device.php and from the web page, (I deleted it and then added it). The static info for it appears but any graphic info doesn't. All the graphs are empty, showing Nan rrdtool dump yields Nan for all data other than static info. +1 (++good) for a maintained BSD port. but draw the line at slowaris or other nasty *nix. there’s a reason AIX is a homonym of “aches”. alternatively, go the IncrediblePBX route, call it “embedded” and pack it into a VM. ideally, both … if embedded BSD is good enough for StatSeeker, pfSense, or FreeNAS; it’s good enough for us! LOL. by some unfathomable logic, packing up something into an OVF container (along with replacing bash with busybox, and tossing phone-home/updates into a cron job) is an acceptable way to avoid the political agony of introducing Obs into some brain-dead enterprise ‘doze-only shops that forbid OpenSores. ps adam — suggest any future “enterprise" license (if any) should be $8,500/year for those types (under $10k tax-in, so you stay at the discretion boundary of 1st-level budget approvers). Graph Gaps - aka I've horked something

Hi all, Yesterday afternoon I added several devices and since then I'm getting gaps in *all* my graphs. Even those for the localhost. I upgraded to the latest (commercial) version, just to check, and still having issues. I'm not quite sure what to make of this. I have nfsen and cacti running on the same box and their graphs all look ok so it seems something specific to observium. My disk io is a bit high but not too bad, cpu is good, ram is fine. See attached screen shot for example of gaps. 8gb of RAM Ubuntu 12.04 750gb sata disk (ST3750640NS) Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU X5450 @ 3.00GHz *couple of notes* - a few days ago I tweaked some mysql settings < #table_cache = 64 --- > table_cache = 600 65c65 < query_cache_size = 16M --- > query_cache_size = 32M - Also in order to group some devices together I manually edited the observium.device.location column in the db for some of the devices. Disable default maps location

I have a few hundred devices that I will be working on adding sysLocation to. It'll take some time, but until that's done, is there any way to disable the default location for unknown location devices and still be able to see the one the map that do have sysLocation? Seeing all those in the middle of the Atlantic is a little useless to me :) Thanks!

Compensating for hostname changes

My company wants to institute a naming convention change and as such, we'd need to update the hostnames in Observium to match. I presume that Observium will not magically update anything if a hostname changes, and I'm sure others have gone through this activity in the past, so I'd like feedback on what's the best way to go about it and any caveats. From my very limited perspective on the matter, I think all I need to do is change the hostnames in the hostname column of the devices table in conjunction with renaming the $observium/rrds/$hostname to match the change. Yes? No? Maybe So? Thanks in advance.

ServerTech Sentry3 Graphs & Infeeds

Hi guys, Hoping someone can point me in the right direction or lend a hand – I have installed Observium CE 0.13.10.4585 to RHEL 6 and have it up and running. Added a couple of power rails, however none of the graphs are populating (no network traffic, uptime or voltage). But, all of the devices added are reporting back their current load and status. Upgrade to 4737 broke some graphs

Hi Guys, Upgraded today using "svn update" to 4737 from 4760 and 2 switch graphs (dell) stopped showing data, cisco, vyatta and one dell unaffected. For example, we have 2 x Dell M6220 stacked blades *a and c* and 1 x Dell M6348 stacked blade switch all in M1000e chassis. a = worked before and after, graph looks aok b = worked before, now stopped c = worked before, now stopped An interesting observation, if I drill down to a port on B, and click realtime, its showing realtime information - so we know that works. Billing also seems unaffected, just the graphs at : /devices/type=network/format=graphs/graph=bits/ stopped for these 2 devices (albeit one is identical to a working device) exactly at the time of upgrade. I confirmed we did do the upgrade as per the wiki : svn update ./discovery.php -h none So now stumped, what can I do to get them back showing the current data (they have the historical few hours before update) and/or what can I run to aid in finding a poss issue ? :-) -- Kind regards, Chris

Hi all, I would just like to share my experience with the attitude of Adam towards general minor web-interface issue reported by a paying customer (me). I've reported that the OSPF stats look very confusing and provided a screenshot which shows the issue. The inital response I got was "jira is not for general complaining". My answer was: "Where do we do so, then? Now that Observium is paid, we deserve some proper attention to problems, at least.... Not just the close-it-as-fast-as-you-can attitude you have so far.... Also, I'm more than willing to fix it myself by looking at the BGP code, so was jast curios if there is any plan to already rework the OSPF pages, as what is seen on the screenshot is really of no use - and I guess your opinion is the same as well." Which resulted in these comments from Tom Laermans and Adam Armstrong: "I believe you are confused about what exactly it is that you paid for." "You're definitely doing the right thing to make sure we add the features you want..." And then the issue was completely deleted.... So, I'd like to point these things: * why do we get such an attitude against the money kindly "asked" from us? Being a kickstarter supporter for the alerting system, I kind of felt being lied to, since the Observium developers decided that one has to get a license to receive the full functionality which the funding was raised for in the first place... Anyways, I understand the need for more revenue, but not the attitude at all. * this is in no way requesting a new feature. Is just a report, plus marked as of minor importance, which shows a feature already available in Observium being kind-of unusable. This makes me completely not understand the way developers behaved. * i've asked Adam in a personal e-mail what's the reason for this attitude. Since he did not get the guts to reply, I hope he does it here. Help troubleshooting auto discovery

I added a new box to my network last week, but Observium hasn't seemed to have picked it up yet. I'm trying to troubleshoot it, but short of proving ping, CDP and snmpwalk on the box work fine and manually running the discovery cron job, I'm not sure what else to do in terms of troubleshooting. I monitor devices with 100ms+ latency, so that isn't a problem. I think the majority of these complaints have come from users who have forgotten this is a grassroots, homegrown effort, which single handedly out performs many other NMS systems albeit paid or free. If you expect answers and resolution to every minute detail which you don't like, put you money where your mouth is. Hello I've been looking through the features of Observium but couldn't find out whether it includes functionality to disable or enable individual ports on a (monitored) switch/router via SNMP. I understand that this lies outside the scope of the software, but I thought I'd ask just in case it's there (or can be enabled optionally) and I missed it. Frontpage map show province with ISO 3166-2

Hello! Observium works for me like a charm, but I have a problem with the frontpage map: I can't get a province with a region ISO 3166-2 code (e.g. DE-SH) as a full map on the frontpage. Only working configuration is to show the whole country (e.g. DE) which is a bit to big. All co-locations of our servers are too close to each other (20 miles) , so that you can't figure out on the map, which location is which. My config.php so far: $config['frontpage']['map']['resolution'] = "provinces"; $config['frontpage']['map']['region'] = "DE-SH"; $config['frontpage']['map']['dotsize'] = "1"; error-message: Request map does not exist. Error drawing Graph

Hello everyone, I'm having strange issue, and spend a lot of time troubleshooting this without any success. Getting error 'error drawing graph' only for some devices only - EX4200 switches, which are located in the remote datacenter. After I started seeing issue, I install another switch here in local datacenter and added it to observium and its working good. Could be the issue in latency - the delay is about 30ms? discovery and poller scripts run good, the only thing I noticed that for the devices that don't work I in rrd/<device_name>/ files port-###.rrd are missing. The CPU and Memory graphs are working good, only network graphs are having errors. Thanks, Roman.

This is most certainly related to network conditions or polling frequency. The poller must run every 5 minutes. Make sure you are running the latest version (svn update) Adam. ZNID-GE-2424-NA-0GN- Zhone Indoor Network Interface Device; Release S2.5.073; We're looking at an 8 port zhone as well (better for triple play). I had 40 in that I need to monitor usage for but because of the SNMP issues affected by existing method of usage collection I have to take them out until I know i have a stable new setup for them with this. We have more but don't need to collect stats on all of them as that usually becomes somewhat cost prohibitive.

Code where this issue crops up appears to be 4711. 4710 looks like it works but 4711 seems to struggle through the poller process. I'm not sure that it isn't the discovery as I have gotten that exact and I'm still on a learning curve here. That said, 4710 is working right now on my zhones so I'm going keep testing on it.

Zhone's are being detected as "GENERIC" which is fine for as long as I get my port data. I started using Observium just last week and in the Open Source version and it gathered data fine all weekend for my Zhone switches. Changing over to the SVN and updating seems to be causing my zhones to stop responding to SNMP. Allied and Alcatel devices (which have the MIBS built in) work fine. Is there a specific SVN version that correlates to the Edition Split that I could try and go back too to see if that poller or discovery works better for these devices? Anybody else notice this? I've been looking for a couple hours and don't see much trouble with the poller like this lately.

Hi, After the update that changed the map, I not only what's in the picture, but when I click on the US marker, it takes me to colocation devices in Amsterdam, not to NYC. Juniper MX memory issue

Is anyone else using Observium on the Juniper MX80 platform? I know the MX960 is listed as supported but not the smaller one and we are seeing an odd memory issue that lines up perfectly with when we started polling it with Observium. Attached/linked image shows the last 12 months of memory usage on a MX5. Not sure if it is related to Observium or not so reaching out to see if other are seeing a similar slow memory climb or not. http://i.imgur.com/9PET5L3.png

pfSense SNMP daemon crashes after update to r4711

Hello guys, yesterday I updated my Observium (Centos 6.4) to the r4711 and I noticed that all my pfSense firewalls (5 hosts, two 2.0.3 and three 2.1) became down. On every host, the SNMP daemon was crashed. I tried to restart the daemon on every pfSense, but it crashed again and it seems to me that it crashes during the next cycle of polling (the discovery seems to go fine). Today I tried to update to the r4715 but I'm experiencing the same problem. Has anyone experienced something like that? How can I go deeper? Thanks for any hints, Kind Regards Stefano

'x' not working anymore in input fields

Hi I've noticed this afternoon that I'm no longer able to enter the character 'x' or 'X' in any input field. Pasting the character works but not normal keyboard input. All other characters seam to work as before. A work collogue has the same problem. So I think it's not the browser. The new behaviour seams to be on one of the changes since Thursday. I had a look at them and can't see and thing suspicious. I currently run svn version 4715. Any Idea where to look ... EX4200/4550 VC - Port Polling ~200 Seconds

Testing Observium, I've noticed that polling an EX4200/4550 with Observium takes about 200 seconds. There are around 300 ports, and I've noticed that Observium polls the logical interfaces as separate from the physical interfaces. I considered disabling logical interface polling, but the logical interfaces are used for a lot of port correlations, etc. Cacti with Spine takes 13 seconds to poll everything in our network, and Cacti with the PHP poller takes maybe 2 minutes to poll everything in our network. Because of Cacti's ability to handle this particular device (even with its PHP poller), I'm pretty convinced that the issue isn't the device. I've checked interface, memory, and CPU utilization on the Observium server as well as the device and the network in-between. Everything is fine. I've also turned Cacti off to ensure there was no strange clash. I also turned polling off for all ports that were in a "down" state and disabled those ports in the switch as well. It almost seems that Observium's poller walks one OID at a time in serial, or otherwise does some ridiculously complex discovery on every poll that it doesn't need to do. Cacti does bulk requests, so it gets around 50 OIDs per request to the switch stack. Is it possible that I'm missing something in the Observium configuration? Thanks! --Tyler

RRD, Graphs and Draw Errors

Hi, I recently updated to the subscription model of observium and did a clean install, but did use my old config.php file. I have several pages where the graphs show draw errors. I have tried setting the permissions on the RRD to apache:apache as indicated in the instructions, which did not seem to change the behavior. I then switched it to root:root, which also does not seem to change the behavior. I reviewed the information on RRD and Graph issues from the mailing list archives, unfortunately the couple of items I found to try did not seem to change the issue either. I did remove the ?> tag and the remaining white space at the end of the config.php file. I have attached a screen shot of the current permissions for the RRD directory and a screen of from one of the pieces of equipment showing the draw error. Some graphs appear to draw but do not contain data such as the CPU graphs. I am not sure how to proceed to further isolate what may be wrong. I have verified the path to the RRD directory and Executable on the system and checked that they were good in the config.php file. Thank you, Tim

Greetings Is there a way we can create "aggregated" (or "stacked") mini-/micrographs for the frontpage? using this syntax $config['frontpage']['minigraphs']['ids'] = "19418,port_bits,Dist76-01.AMS4;19496,port_bits,NAME"; or this: $config['frontpage']['micrographs']['RING']['ids'] = "19414,port_bits,NAME;19492,port_bits,NAME2;19439,port_bits,NAME3"; results in several graphs next to each other. what we are after is in "mini" or "micro" what we can do it using "custom" traffic graphs - but they are too big for what we are trying to do... $config['frontpage']['custom_traffic']['ids'] = "19418,19496"; <-- this actually stacks the data into one graph thanks for any pointers! Hi Mike, After your patch, it still isn't completely working. In the first screenshot (18:31) I manually triggered a discovery. The second minute I also manually triggered the poller. In fact 3 things are going wrong. - First the discovery fixes the IP addresses (ipv6) for the missing rows and second the poller removes the IPv6 addresses. - The second column for the IPv6 address still gives strange characters. - Last; the ip addresses (ipv4) are still wrongly formatted. I also included some debug logs again. Hopefully you can fix this. The default installation of Observium uses /usr/bin as the path for many commands (snmp, Python, etc) and FreeBSD keeps a strict separation between the base system and the optional ports/packages. Nothing dramatic, but they belong under /usr/local/bin instead of /usr/bin, /usr/local/lib instead of /usr/lib... This is a list of the paths that should point to /usr/local. Making use of hdarray

Hi all, I've been trying to make use of hdarray (added in http://jira.observium.org/browse/OBSERVIUM-233) but it seems like there's a bit of an issue with the patch: it doesn't contain the actual observium-agent module. The patch seems to have been merged into SVN's devel branch (http://www.observium.org/svn/observer/branches/devel/includes/polling/unix-…, for example) but there's no hdarray module in SVN's devel branch either (see http://www.observium.org/svn/observer/branches/devel/scripts/agent-local/) which should rule out the possibility of it being added in right after. Am I looking in the wrong place or is the hdarray module simply missing? Cheers, Henri Watson

graphics problem

Hi, yesterday I installed paul software according to the official documentation. I have successfully added the first servers (. / hostname add_device community versionsnmp). why is the DNS query rate so high?

Thanks for clues in troubleshooting a problem with high DNS query rates from Observium. I've been looking at Observium for network monitoring, and really like it so far, except that makes repeated DNS queries at a very high rate. For example, an Observium box monitors an old Cisco 2651XM router in the same physical location. Running a capture on the DNS server, we see the Observium box made over 200 queries for the router's hostname in a 7-second interval. Also, the DNS server correctly responded to every one of these, usually within 20 ms. What would cause so many DNS queries (and apparent non-caching of the responses)? This behavior is thrashing the logs on the DNS servers. This is with Observium Community Edition 0.13.10.4586 running on Debian Wheezy. Thanks again dn

Latest subscription version and Map issues

Evening all :-) I have had a quick look at the google page listed in the the doc, and also had a good search of google in general. I have a smallish but problematic issue with the overview page. In the old version (before update) I did not have any issue with this, howver the page defaults to the USA, and well I am in the UK - I have tried playing around with the region setting in the Docs (not a lot is discussed about "what" it actually does, but i have had a good play) to no avail. Google api doc page mentioned setting the region to "England" so I set : [map] => Array ( [region] => England [resolution] => countries [dotsize] => 10 [realworld] => [api] => google-mc [zooms_per_click] => 1 But it still defaults to the USA (middle of) :/ Now the second issue is we have set the device properties > System Location to be "Greenwich View Place, London, UK" which initially showed the devices in the correct place, then after an hour or two, its now 3 miles off to the East :( (and there I was thinking - wow thats good) :) So any help - guidance would be much appreciated :) -- Kind regards, Chris

Hi I installed the community edition at the time of the split and have come across an issue with the detailed charts. When I click on the Collectd tab I see the various charts as expected. See the attached screenshot. However, when I then click on one of the charts to see more detail, I get the broken image icon. Hi, I'm having problems with the performance of the poller. We have 200 switches and almost 16000 ports included and the poller is having trouble getting them checked in 5 minutes. With 20 threads it's working with a load of 15. When I add more threads it takes longer to get the data from switches. With less threads it also doesn't check all switches in 5 minutes. I'm using new fast hardware. I've implemented all the performance tuning tips on the observium site. I also disabled the checking of fbd-table, arp-table and mac-accounting. When I debug the poller the ports check takes the longest. About 90 % of the total time. 1 switch takes about 8 to 10 seconds now. Is there a way to speed it up? Maybe I can extend the check cycle time to 10 minutes? Distributed poller instances? Hello guys, I'm testing Observium in the company that I work, it's working great, however we realize that Observium is not getting the processors and memory utilization from ours FastIron SX family, which includes SX 800 and SX 1600. The Brocade MLX family that we use are working fine and we are able to get proc and memory, I guess that it's a MIB problem but I couldn't find it on google. Does anyone has this switches been monitored by observium? Moving to the Subscription Edition on CentOS

Hello guys, I'd like to inform you that on my CentOS 6.4 I followed the steps for moving the installation (http://www.observium.org/wiki/Edition_Split#How_do_I_move_to_the_Subscripti on_Edition.3F), but I also had to move the logs folder: mv observium-old/logs observium otherwise the Apache startup gave that error on /var/log/httpd/error_log: (2)No such file or directory: httpd: could not open error log file /opt/observium/logs/error_log. Power meter error graphs

I have a number of power meters from tripplite and obviously they don't have network statistics for traffic. So, I get the attached errors for the ports graphs on the overview page and when I click on the ports, where it takes you to the graphs of all the traffic. I want to be able to disable the display of this, since everything else is correct. Is there an element in code somewhere that I can just comment that out or something? Wrong data in CPU Load graph

Hi, the graphs for the CPU load of a linux server are not accurate. The CPU shows in vSphere client a load of 40-50% but in observium all 4 cores are permanently at 90%. Does anybody know why this happens? Thx Chris

I have been enjoying my Observium installation quite a lot, and I love the nice graphs of traffic and ports. Given that this level of detail can be pulled from the devices, is there anyone/anyway who have been able to use that info to create a URL tracker that could show to what URL's a source IP is going? I'd love to be able to integrate something like that into Observium. Ping Timeouts

Howdy all, I'm getting lots of emails for a few devices that have basic ADSL connectivity. Pings from the Observium box have a high RTT and timeout (I guess). Said emails have the following subject; Device Down: device.network.net (ping) Device Up: device.network.net I am getting these emails 5 minutes apart. Each time the poller runs the host is either back up again or going down again. This is happening for a few devices with congested ADSL connections (which is a separate issue in itself!). I have tried to raise the the timeout options in the config, thus; $config['ping']['timeout'] = 3000; # timeout in ms $config['ping']['retries'] = 6; # how many times to retry the query When I am on the server pinging the devices that cause these alerts, the ping is never higher than 1500ms. Perhaps when the poller runs the delay is higher (although I haven't seen this behavious when running pings for 30+ mins). I did raise it to 6000ms but this didn't stop the alerts either. It seems to me that Observium isn't honoring those values. Has anyone had any problems with these settings before? The default timeout is 500ms which I wanted to raise anyway, but I'm not sure this is having any effect. Cheers, James.

Are the perf_times and devices_perftimes used for anything other than diagnostics at the moment? These tables are the significant majority of the data in our database. I truncated them once to free up some space. Good afternoon everyone, I'm a security administrator from a French insurance company and me and my collegues are interested in your powerful monitoring tool. I've tested it recently and was amazed by the pretty easy installation of such an intuitive software :-) I've also discovered your splitting editions and your intentions for the future and agree with that. The pricing is correct in front of all the work you (all the devs) have done. The only things I would to know to convince my chief that it's the tool we need, is : do you have a roadmap for the alerting module ? Because, if I've correctly understood, you have done a successful Kickstarter campaign to implement the alerting module, but from my last tests (one of the last free SVN edition, something like r4400) the alerting module wasn't really enabled, even after changing the config.php and setting the mailing alerts (with the right SMTP relay, recipient, etc...). Another question is, when (or how if I've done it wrong ...) do you plan to enable mail alerts for hosts down ? I didn't search in all your archives (only the last months) but I'm sorry if the questions was already asked ... and I'm sorry for my rough English ... Our issue is that we would like to collect the stats as close to the devices as possible and then transport them over to the central server where we can view them all. Hi Guys, As we talked about in April, to sustain development we need to develop a revenue stream. The temporary solution in April was the Kickstarter, which funded 6 months of development for the alerting system. To fund development after that, we've decided to try a relatively inexpensive subscription scheme. http://www.observium.org/Edition_Split The intention is to provide enough for free to keep the people who wouldn't ever pay happy, and try to keep the price low enough that everyone else can pay without worrying too much about it. Memory Usage: what is there displayed?

Port groups under device

Hi, i wonder if its possible to group port types (eg. all 10GigE) of a specific device. We have some core switches that have lots of modules with a huge amount of ports. If I click to see the graphs of that device it takes way to long while it loads all of the ports of that device. Like: switch1 ------> Module 1 ------> Module 2 ------> PortChannels ------> TenGig ------> VLANs switch2 etc. It would be much faster/easier to go directly to the desired module/port group. Monitoring an NFS share?

We have our backup storage mounted as an NFS share on our devices. We want to monitor each of these shares individually from the servers themselves (Not from the backup server, as that machine is not under our control). I am loving Observium so far but cannot figure out how we can accomplish this task. Disk monitoring is already in place so this doesn't seem like too much of a reach as the mounted share shows up in df -h output. Any tips would be appreciated.

Is this possible to configure, or just not with what info the Cisco switches are providing? Sorry if this is explained somewhere, just didn't seem to find anything related to this.

Hi, after som updates (now on the latest public SVN) I have lost temperatures on my SuperMicro boxes. And on some the storage as well. Hi, I understand the change. And personally I think the price is oke, but I don't hope it will sky-rocket in the near feature. For us the MOST important thing is the Alerting (eg. IF up/down) part. But right now it's very limited and not working very well for us. Make it more less-complicated would be nice :-D When we can use it as reliable monitoring platform too, we are in! One other part: also support RHEL/CENTOS. It's an widely used enterprise OS and can't be ignored imho. - Gerwin

Bug in SLA addition?

Putting together a test box on CentOS 6.4 today to get a feel for it. If it works for us (though there are some hurdles), we'll look at it as a long term replacement to our largely homegrown MRTG installation. One of the many things I was happy to find that Observium is doing out of the box is Cisco IP SLA graphing. However, I'm running into an issue. The rrds are not being created and the graphs are empty. I set up config.php to enable_sla, and taking a clue from something I came across in the archives, I ran: ./poller.php -d -h <hostname> In the debug, a couple of things show up: SLA 121: jitter IP SLA SVC to Villages Low Priority... Running observium on multiple hosts

I'm looking for some feedback/ideas on how others may have implemented Observium in a multi-site capacity. We are currently using MRTG to provide our data collection and graphing. While Observium isn't a perfect replacement for us, it goes a long way towards replacing much of what MRTG does. Our current setup involves a large university campus. We have core, distribution, and access layers, and at the distribution layers we've implemented monitoring systems for packet capture and (you guessed it) MRTG. This allows for: - Data collection to continue even if a distribution layer site is isolated from the core - Prevents data collection bandwidth from impacting the core Our MRTG data presentation is largely homegrown, and how we go about it isn't important. What I'm looking for are suggestions on how one might take a multi-server setup and allow someone to search or navigate to a given building or switch without having to guess as to which distribution site it's out of. Ideas rattling around my head right now involve: - Coding up the search function so that it not only searches the local site, but also all of the other servers - Coming up with some static page that indicates that a given building is off of a given installation - this one I don't like so much So I'm wondering if this is something someone else has put time and effort into and has a viable solution. -- Eric Stewart - Network Administrator - eric(a)usf.edu University of South Florida, Information Technology

Device Alerts

Hi everyone, On the main front page of Observium (the Overview/dashboard), the device alerts table never seems to empty. I guess it works on a maximum number of entries scheme, new alerts are displayed at the top as they occur and old ones are dropped off the bottom. It looks like we always have problems on our NOC display. Is it possible to remove items from the list, clear them off somehow? Many thanks, James.

I'm having difficulty with 2 settings: I've added: $config['frontpage']['map']['dotsize'] = 5; This is not changing the size of the dot. I've also added: $config['title_image'] = "images/my-logo.png"; This is not changing the logo on the top left of the web interface. That page is how it is, you cant remove things from it because its showing state. Rebooted information goes away after 24 hours. Its actually showing you devices with uptime below 24 hours. Adam. separate diskio graphs for different devices

Hi all, is it possible to have a separate graph for each entity in the DiskIO? Scenario is that we try to monitor ZFS server and there are over 200 Filesystems that are shown on top of each other making the graph impossible to use. Thanks!

Graphs broken after update

Hi to all. My observium worked perfect for about a month. But yesterday i made an update (to rev. 4572): #cd /opt/observium #svn update #./discovery.php -h none After that i have next problem: - in servers overview tab all graphs ok - when i'm clicking for example on Memory Usage graph, all is ok. Adding a custom OID ?

Hello, I'm a newbie with Observium having just installed it, but now a question has popped up in my head that I could not find a clear answer to by googling. I have a couple of Linux hosts for which I also added in the net-snmpd conf a counter for the number of imapd & others processes. How could I add to a small part of the existing graphed servers, this OID ? (or where should I look in the conf ?) I was thinking maybe defining a new template (if this is the working principle) and adding there these OIDs also for the discovery phase. Can someone advise me at least where to start my question with ? I'm a bit confused at the moment. Thanks, Mihai

How to use removespikes.php?

Aggregate Graphing?

I was looking at the graphing off of the main page, where you select All Devices, then Bits, and had a quick question about this. I assume this is an aggregate of all interfaces being displayed. What I am curious to know is if the graphs show interfaces that are "technically" duplicates? For example, a straight interface on a juniper device can be ge-1/0/0, but because there is a unit attached to the interface, sort of like a sub-interface, ge-1/0/0.0 shows up as well. The problem here is, its the same statistics for both of the interfaces, in this example. So, if the aggregate graph is looking at all interfaces and includes both in the aggregate graph, well than the aggregate is not correct? Not sure if I explained it correctly, and if not, please let me know. What i am getting at is, it seems as though there is duplicate information being aggregated so the graphs is not accurate, from what it looks like. Thoughts?
