Alert for description port

Hello, I need a help with alerts: I have mikrotik, extreme, datacom, huawei, cisco ..., all registered by ip in observium and with their doors properly described in the equipment. The port down, device down, displays the ip of the device and the number of the port, in the cases of mikrotik it presents the description of the port, but in other cases it only displays the port number. When we receive an alert on the telegram for example, or even on the dashboard, we can not know what that port is until it clicks on it, could it send the description along with the alert in a way that works for all manufacturers? In mikrotik the association that I make is: port.ifAlias in others the association is: port.ifDescr One more question would be: In addition to sending the ip of the device, it would have to send the hostname of the device, this would be very useful also in the dashboard --

Hi, All methods to send notification by SMS needs internet. But if link to internet is down the messages never arrives on time. i was working on a solution "homemade", this implement a Arduino as web server and Gsm shield. Now observium can send SMS without externals. I have selected webhook as method but always it showme in debug Notifying [webhook] arduino: {"url":"http:\/\/A.B.C.D"} [FALSE] Arduino must send a response but i dont know what field send ... status, code ...? somebody have this data? -- Saluda cordialmente

Custom Icon $config['icon’][‘logo']

Good morning/afternoon/evening, Just a quick question. I have created a custom drop-down menu in the navbar, and would like to define a custom icon like; $config['icon’]['company-logo'] which provides a .png file in the images folder etc. Or more specifically instead of; $navbar['4D-DC'] = array('url' => '#', 'icon' => $config['icon']['company-logo'], 'title' => 'URLS'); Maybe this would work (sadly it doesn’t); $navbar['4D-DC'] = array('url' => '#', 'icon' => ‘images/company-logo.png’, 'title' => ''URLS''); I cannot find anywhere in the code where the $config['icon’] array is defined, and it is not in the database’s config table either? Needed Didactum MiBs in Observium

Hi, we used Didactum for Monitoring Temputure, Humitity and Smoke in our Racks and the Technik rooms. We use also Observium in our Institut and we want to monitor the Didactum also in Observium. From Didactum i have a MiB, but i cant include them. There are a lot of OIDs when i must include them, can you include them in the Observium MIBs list? I send the Didactum MIBs with this Mail. Forcing location based on IP

Hi Guys, I would like to insert location data based on the IP address, but I want to write a script that will auto update this into the DB. We are adding 100s of devices over the next few months, some on them doesn't support SNMP Location (yeah, I know....) We have decided to just override the location in Observium for all systems, even if they support it or not. By the looks of it, the data goes into devices_locations ? Thanks ! Pieter De Wit

Geolocation - API Endpoints missing in MySQL config table

Oh no, not me again!! In my recent post I alluded to an issue I was having with Geolocation. After installing Observium CE v2018.9, I couldn't get Geolocation to work with the default setup, so I changed to Google as I already had an API Key setup for other purposes. However, Geolocation still failed to do anything. After looking in Jira, there seem to be a number of posts on this subject, all closed off with no resolution. For anyone out there that still has an issue with Google Geolocation, then I've found what the problem is. This may also solve the issue for other Geolocation APIs too. By the way, before I get started on the solution, I've opened a new bug in Jira (OBS-3022), so hopefully this will get fixed. So, digging into the PHP code, I finally worked out that the API Endpoint URLs are stored in MySQL "config" table. Except, they weren't, "direct_url" and "reverse_url" were missing from the "config" table. I would think that if you select Google as the API provider in the GUI, that the "config" table should be populated with the correct URLs. Nothing in any documentation states that config.php needs anything added manually to cause MySQL to be populated. There may actually be an easier way to achieve this by entering values in config.php, however I've only been digging around in the PHP code for less than 2 days and I haven't fully got my head around how Observium does things yet. So my solution involves getting your hands dirty with MySQL / SQL. To fix the problem manually for Google and potentially other API providers, do the following:- 1. SSH to your Observium host or login to the CLI if you're local. 2. I'm a bit naughty I tend to do everything in a "root" shell, so if you login as non-root you'll probably need to su or sudo to user observium or the owner of the MySQL database first. 3. Connect to MySQL using - mysql observium (don't include the " - ", that just to separate the description from the command) 4. Check the current contents of "config" table - select * from config; (for those of you unfamiliar with SQL the ";" is absolutely required) 5. For the Google Geolocation APIs to work there should be two entries as below:- | geocoding|direct_url | s:49:"https://maps.googleapis.com/maps/api/geocode/json"; | | geocoding|reverse_url | s:49:"https://maps.googleapis.com/maps/api/geocode/json"; | 6. If these are missing or different, then Google API will fail. At this point you either need to insert/update the Google API Endpoint URLs in the table or URLs that are appropriate to the API you want to use. 7. If missing, to enter for Google, do the following in MySQL. You can copy and paste, both lines are required:- insert into config (config_key,config_value) values ('geocoding|direct_url','s:49:"https://maps.googleapis.com/maps/api/geocode/json";'); insert into config (config_key,config_value) values ('geocoding|reverse_url','s:49:"https://maps.googleapis.com/maps/api/geocode/json";'); 8. If entries are there, but wrong urls, do:- update config set config_value = 's:49:"https://maps.googleapis.com/maps/api/geocode/json"' where config_key = 'geocoding|direct_url' or config_key = 'geocoding|reverse_url'; 9. To enter different URLs you will likely have to change the s:49 value at the beginning. The value 49 is the count of characters in the URL between the double quotes, do not include the double quotes in the count. 10. If the URLs for the Geolocation API you want to use are different for direct and reverse lookups, then you will need a slightly different update statement in step 8. 11. I'm not going to tell you how to delete the entries, as this is a bit dangerous if you don't know what you're doing. So you either know anyway or go read up about MySQL and practice on a dummy table first. In any case there should be no reason to delete anything, unless the table is really in a mess. 12. To close MySQL CLI, enter quit or exit or press CTRL-C. 13. Lastly, don't panic if things don't seem to work immediately, for some reason it seemed to take a while for poller.php to start using the new config and this wasn't just the 5 minute delay of the crontab timings. 14. I actually purged all records from the "devices_locations" table to force all locations to be regenerated, but this is not a good idea if you've added manual lat/long coordinates. If your SNMP sysLocation cannot be converted by the Geolocation API and you've purged the locations table, all your "flags" will end up at the default lat/long, assuming you've configured one. System Uptime (sysUpTime) OID incorrect for some systems

I'm observing a problem with some systems being reported as having rebooted at odd times, which are completely unrelated to reality. The GUI claims the system uptime is derived from the OID sysUpTime, however I can't find this OID in any MIB, maybe an internal label in Observium? In actuality Observium seems to be using the 1st OID below, but as can be seen from the 2nd OID the two seem totally unrelated. In the case of this particular system, the 2nd OID value is when it was rebooted, the 1st one seems to have no correlation to the reboot time. PDU current alert problem

Hi all, I am on the latest 9906 version. I have an alarm witch check the PDU's load. The aim is if the load is over 7 (amper) and the bank name is not "Bank total" i would like to get an alarm. Alert Email Wont Change

Good day, When we started using email alerts we had a very simple config. We had the lines for setting default in config.php commented out. And the setting in the webUI for use default on alerts set. So all alerts would go to: alerts(a)mycompany.com. Recently I have been working on updating our environment so that different devices have different contact emails so we can start bugging the device owners more specifically. I have the setting for use default turned off on the webUI. After multiple attempts I am still not able to get emails to follow the syscontact. I even added a new email address to the default email setting in the webUI and it STILL refuses to send to that new email. Is there a place someone else (I did not set the server up) could of hard coded that email? Thank you, Scott Connary

(rrdcached into main server listening on port 42227), the pollers send the info to main server. but main server don't save them. Is correct this? somebody can helpme? -- Saluda cordialmente

I have Active Directory authentication working for users in the Level = 10 group, but no one in the Level=5 can login. I am trying to create an admin group and a readonly group "basically". All user accounts are in the same OU. Unix-agent added to linux storage box but observium excludes it

I have tried to manually discover and poll the unix-agent module with their respective php scripts but I still couldn't get any details to happen. Is there an override in the mysql database or an option I can force in config.php to force enable unix-agent at the device level? Thank you, Cody

Houskeeping question

Hello, Currently with multiple distributed and partinioned pollers I only have the poller-wrapper.php process in the 5min schedule on the pollers and the discovery and housekeeping on the rrd-cache server. Is that okay or do I need to run the discovery and housekeeping also on the pollers? I'm asking because I have a device deleted, last rrd file was updated on 25. April and housekeeping settings 'RRD File Max Age' & 'Remove Deleted Ports Age' to 7d - and I actually set 'Remove Deleted Ports Age' to 2d but still have the rrd directory of the deleted device. Thought I would set the pollers 'only' for polling and do the discovery and housekeeping on the rrd server (as it's probably more efficient?) or is it not working that way? Thanks, Alex

Adjust rrd step size per device

Hey list, how much work would it be to have an option to adjust the rrd step size per device? Background is that we have a HP/H3C chassis that even with latest firmware takes average 1000s to poll; with fdb already disabled. 98% of the time is spent in the ports module, polling ifEntry and ifxEntry. We'd really like to at least get an hourly graph of the traffic which is better then nothing. The idea is to put this dev into its own group and have a different cron job for it (excluding this group from the default one). RRDCached issue - HELP!

Starting this weekend rrdcached appears to have stopped working correctly. Has anyone seen an issue with this? Hi, When using a dedicated rrd caching server - for what is the local /opt/observium/rrd caching folder used for? In our setup we created a dedicated rrd-caching server and several distributed and partitioned pollers and would expect the rrd's are only written/updated on the rrd-caching server and do not need much diskspace on the pollers but it seems the rrd's are also written on the pollers? Is that on purpose (fallback - rrd server unavailable) or what is the need of the rrd's on the pollers when using a rrd-caching server? Thanks, Alex

BGP Neighbor Descriptions

Hi We have observium v19.4.9840 (rolling) setup and working great with alerting for BGP sessions going down. For BGP sessions with public AS Numbers this works well as it shows up which AS number and who the AS number is assigned to as gone down: But when its a private AS number with a private IP, its then much harder to distinguish what the BGP neighbor is related to without logging into the router and looking at the neighbor and the neighbor descriptions set against the BGP neighbor: In most routers you can set a description against a BGP neighbor in the config. Is it possible to get this description attached to the BGP neighbor in observium thus then adding it to the alert when the BGP neighbor goes down? This is the config on a Cisco ASR9K for the above neighbor: router bgp 65000 neighbor 100.127.18.181 description USG1-GREE Could this description be pulled and added to the neighbor and thus alert? More than happy to provide some debug if required and any SNMP data that might be helpful. Many Thanks Richard

Hello, I’m new to this group and to Observium. A friend turned me on to it a few weeks ago. I have Observium 19.3.9774 running on Ubuntu 18.04.2LTS. Everything is working great! I’ve added my switches and LLDP and SNMP data is flowing in and all of the cross-references have been established. My question pertains to adding new devices. I can successfully add new devices via the GUI or the CLI as described in the documentation. My friend was telling me he <thinks> devices can be detected and added to the device list automatically via some sort of discovery?? Is this a thing or is he pulling my leg? new alert checks?

Hi, I am currently using the current ce version (Observium CE 18.9.9420). After upgrading from the previous ce version, i see the alert checks have completely changed. the alert checks i had still seem to function, but when I try to modify them, the fields are all different....I am getting the impression that there is an alert conversion script? I have looked for docs on how to use the new alert checks but cannot find any. Can you please point me to a page that explains how to use the new alert checks and how to fix the upgraded alert checks. thanks! Tony

Voltage/Current Sensor anomalies on Cisco SG200/SF300 switches

Greetings! I have a number of SF300-24P (802.3af), SF300-24PP (802.3at), SF300-48P, and SG200-26P Cisco switches, all at firmware revision 1.4.8.6 (There is a newer firmware 1.4.10.06 published 4 days ago: I will install this only if required). The voltage/current sensors are constantly complaining that they are either under/over threshold. For example, below are the logs on a port drawing 3500 mW for a Ubiquiti Unifi access point model UAP-AC-M: voltage range from 0V (!) to 92V for a device that should draw 37 to 57 V PoE levels. I have 29 of these devices scattered over the network and I can rule out simple malfunction of any/all devices. More intriguing is the 0.0975A current "threshold" used to issue these warnings: it does not make sense if Watts are still the product of Volts by Ampps ;-). Is it possible that the MiB for these devices is out of whack? I recently updated my Observium CE to 18.9.9420 (5th September 2018) but this issue has been annoying me for quite some time. Please note that I have similar results for all kinds of IP cameras : however, I do not have issues for ports that are connected to Cisco SG200-08 PoE switches and for which the only warnings I get is when the output voltage suddenly drops to zero. Unfortunately, these devices do not support SNMP. Hi All, we have a few Linux servers which are fed through APC Smart UPSs. Rather small ones, so no network management card, they are being monitored by apcupsd. We would be very happy to see the/some values of the UPSs in Observium. What I've done: I extended snmpd with a script from https://github.com/jirutka/apcupsd-snmp which makes some values from apcupsd available under |.1.3.6.1.4.1.318.1.1.1| which in turn belongs to PowerNet-MIB (aka APC). I can read those values with snmpwalk (see p.s.) so the script works. Observium already contains PowerNet-MIB, but no graph for these values are appearing. Migrated from 16.04 to 18.04 and rrd stopped writing?

Hi All Im trying to find out if I have done something wrong or maybe missed something? I have done a migrate from ubuntu 16.04 to ubuntu 18.04 and now ALL of my RRDs have stopped being written? 1. mysqldump to backup, scp file to new server, then mysql to restore 2. Scp the whole rrd folder from old server to new server 3. Scp the old config.php to new server Only thing I have done differently is use the setup script instead of manually installing observium On the new server the rrd folder shows drwxrwsr-x 60 observium www-data 4.0K Apr 24 16:29 rrd But the old server shows it as drwxr-xr-x 60 www-data www-data 12K Apr 24 15:57 rrd One of the folders inside rrd show this drwxr-xr-x 2 root www-data 4096 Apr 24 15:58 localhost And an rrd file shows this -rw-r--r-- 1 root www-data 115K Apr 24 15:58 perf-poller.rrd Did I overwrite the folder permissions by accident? How can I get the front page Graph Widget to show the legend? I have had no luck enabling the legend on the graph page and then telling it to add to a dashboard it just does not show. As a matter of fact, the URL for the widget says legend=no. Hi, I am currently using the current ce version (Observium CE 18.9.9420). After upgrading, i see the alerts have completely changed. the alerts i had still seem to function, but when I try to modify them, the fields are all different....I am getting the impression that there is an alert conversion script? I have looked for docs on how to use the new alerts but cannot find any. Can you please point me to a page that explains how to use the new alerts and how to fix the upgraded alerts. thanks!

No RAM graphs are displayed for network devices

Hello. I have observium version 19.3.9791. Apparently, earlier it was possible to monitor the amount of occupied RAM on network devices. In the application there is a screenshot which shows that there were such graph on the device. On new devices there are no such graphs. How can I fix this? I have an Observium question - I am looking to create an alert for Palo Alto Networks firewall's session count, ideally one that fires when the session percentage goes above 85%. How would I build such a checker? I have tested a couple of different ways, and not been able to get one to fire. RRD, Interfaces & docker

Hi all, This is my first post, and I'm a not so newbie user of Observium. If my question has been answered, or if its now correct, please advise. We're using Observium latest community edition as below: [cid:image001.png@01D4EFC3.4368A660] Situation: where monitoring a lot of virtual servers in a VMware environment, and we use docker in a lot of those vm's. What's happens is, as usual in docker, a lot of network devices are created, and observium correctly detects those ports. However in a small period of time they're gone, however Observium keep track of them, and keep the RRD files. In a specific case, we've got : [cid:image002.png@01D4EFC3.4368A660] Result... RRD for this server as... 200G! Anyone has had this problem? I was thinking about using the config['bad_if'][] with something similar of veth*, but I think is not possible. I noticed for Linux, there’s a special entity type for average CPU, but I cannot figure out how to see what’s available? I see this on the entity page, but how do I know what that entity is named? IPMI Errors?

Hey Observium Team, I am not sure if IPMI on standard SuperMicro mainboards can be scraped for ECC errors and other SEL-type errors? Am I going to have to ship syslog data somewhere and act on it? We just had a DIMM throwing correctable errors but that doesn’t really show up anywhere in IPMI/SNMP as far as I can see, even after checking the SM MIBs. How do others accomplish similar monitoring? Windows Agent?

I'm curious how hard it will be to add a windows agent like the existing Linux agent. I have written a PowerShell listener that responds on 36602 with the output from whatever scripts are in a specific directory with the data formatted in the expected format for Observium. Currently I have scripts that return the installed packages, ioping, vmwaretools, and working on a few others (IIS, MSSQL, Exchange). I have yet to started looking at the Observium side of things other than glancing at includes/polling/unix_agent.inc.php and a few of the scripts in includes/polling/unix_agent/*. Bug Question - UPS Interface Issue

Adam/Team, I have a few new UPS systems that are Eaton 5PX units with their management card. I have others that function fine, but the last two I have installed, the port parsing isn’t working, and every poller run generates a new interface name somehow. See attached image. If I stop polling for the port, the issue goes away. It’s not critical, but I am wondering how to even go about troubleshooting this issue. How do I go about debugging this with support? Hi Observium team: We are having Draw Error issue generating graphs from two Custom OIDs (connection counts and translation counts) for Cisco firewalls. Andrew- I noticed this too, it was like if the SFP was inserted, it’d still throw an error because the transceiver tx/rx limits were technically still out of spec. There needs to be logic to check for the interface status first, then disable the thresholds/alerts if down. I had just considered removing optics for ports that were shut, but kinda annoying for sure. Hello, I see the service discovery options and enabled the “services” module. I am not seeing any services on the device like it shows on your site’s screenshots. I’m an enterprise customer. Please let me know if there’s something I am missing, or if there’s more documentation around this functionality. I really need to do basic HTTP checks. I see there was some support at one time using nagious-esque plugins, but I can’t seem to find any references to the code of the actual services checks? I saw it only works for device type “server” but, even on the local OBS, the services module doesn’t really do anything. Hello, Using Observium Professional, svn up’d today. For Juniper MX, the Firewall tab graphs firewall filters, policers, etc., however I can’t seem to find a way to create alerts based on any of those values. Am I missing it somewhere or is that not supported? Specifically I’m looking to be alerted when there is a policer violation. Thanks in advance.

Vendor & Hardware Changes in event log

I am constantly seeing updates in the event log telling me that the Vendor and Hardware details have been ‘changed’. It looks like this is happening for all devices even though none of those details have actually changed. I’d like to monitor the event log for things that actually happen 😊. Hey All, I know these questions have probably been asked a lot, but after searching the answers weren’t really clear. Can you please help me build a case to pay for the software? ☺ - Observium seems to support graphing application metrics, but I don't see any entity types for applications to key on in alert checkers. Is there any way to make the metrics available to the alert checkers? (Found a post about this but it was 4 years ago) - Can I use smokeping port checks to cover service checks (i.e. simple TCP connection tests) or can I key (alert) on the smokeping metrics? - If we purchase the full version, which includes custom SNMP OID's, can I also alert on the custom OID data? I have scripts that currently do this with our other monitoring software. - If we purchase enterprise support, will we be able to see a better road map or any other improvements coming down the pipe? I have manually installed the rrd and mysql server - the install script only has the option to install the community, pro stable, pro rolling and unix agent. How to I install the gui server and pollers properly that they are all getting updated? Do I have to run the install script on every poller and remove the packages I do not need on them - like mysql server? thx, Alex

Help with Dell X1026P switch

Hi all – I’m having some issues with a Dell X1026P switch. It polls ports and VLANs, but doesn’t pull in processor info, status checks, etc. like our other switches of similar model in the Dell lineup or even show the Dell logo – its stuck on “Generic Device” with the mascot and question mark. I’m wondering if this switch’s snmp implementation just sucks, or if there’s a MIB or some snmpwalk specific output I can give that might help determine why observium doesn’t seem to understand what the switch is. SLA and CBQOS missing

Hello, We are experiencing an issue with IP SLA and CBQOS. The items are missing from the menu and on the device-specific tab. When we do a manual discovery and a manual polling of a device, it all appears back again. After waiting a few minutes (appears to be till the normal poller wrapper runs again), the data is missing again. This is now since a week or 3 and we can’t get it fixed. Alert Changes in newest subscription update? Hello all. I'm fairly green with Linux as well as Observium. I stood up the community edition on Centos 3.10.0-957.1.3.el7.x86_64 and found it to be a very useful tool. Management supported moving to subscription. I have various alert checkers setup and everything seemed to be very happy and good until updating to revision 9727 on 2/28/2019. It seemed like Observium started becoming more "sensitive" to things and has generated false positives on devices being down when they actually aren't. I tried locating release notes on the revision to see if any changes were made to alerting, to no avail. I just ran another update this morning and we are now on 9775. I guess what I'm asking is if there were changes to alerting / polling that may require me to tweak my settings. Thank you in advance for any insight...and this is an absolutely terrific tool. The subscription price is a steal compared to other commercial packages available that are 10 times the cost and about 100 times less useful. Very Respectfully, Kenneth R. I’ve installed one manually and one with the script – only wanted to make sure I’m not doing anything wrong or messing up something. We have a datacenter in US, EU and CN where the RRDCache and MySQL instance is running in EU and I want to deploy two or three pollers in every other datacenter. Anyone using MySQL active/active or Galera cluster or is it recommended to stick with a single MySQL server? Oxidized for config management & notifications

All, I've added the first stage of a patch for better Oxidized support via the existing JIRA ticket from 2016, https://jira.observium.org/browse/OBS-1986 What I'm building is what I've described in the JIRA comment, which basically means that we shift to using the Oxidized API properly rather than files on an immediately accessible filesystem. Not too hard to write and the rest of it'll be done shortly. But I am very interested in feedback about Oxidized. Particularly as the project is in need of maintainers to really keep it going - https://github.com/ytti/oxidized#help-needed Are you using it? How well's it going? Do you agree with what I'm proposing to add to Observium and see value in it? (See below) OR; have you found something better and have since moved away from Oxidized to another OSS or a COTS product? NOTE: Rants about Ruby/Oxidized or SVN/git being bad exist in the same leaky mentally challenged boat as rants about RANCID/Perl being bad. Don't bother. At the moment the main thing that's missing from the existing reuse of the RANCID code in an Oxidized environment; is the ability to see diffs when it's a git repo rather than Subversion. A secondary issue with the existing RANCID support is that the Observium web interface needs access to SVN/configs via the file system. So you either need run Oxidized on the same box; or export the file system to it using NFS/etc. There's a lot of reasons why you might be wanting to run Oxidized elsewhere and don't want to expose a file system from it back to your Observium implementation. -- From JIRA -- The ideal integration here would actually utilise the Oxidized API so the Oxidized system can exist anywhere; rather than on a file system immediately accessible to the Observium webUI. e.g. config from https://oxidized-not-obserivum-server.org.tld/node/fetch/[NODE] Observium would also expose a list of hosts (may already be in API?); that Oxidized would use as a list of devices to monitor, https://github.com/ytti/oxidized/blob/master/docs/Sources.md#source-http Syslog (SNMP trap to syslog where necessary) alerting matches for config change events would trigger Oxidized based collection of new config; which in turn would trigger Oxidized based alerts in close to real time for changes. -Colin

Hi, really as I see, this is firmware/hardware issue. Better write TAC to Cisco. I added ifType ignoring in validate ports (for this os) in r9755. But I see too many not exist Oids, I'm not sure this will help you.. I know where you're at... but, 0) No refactoring required - this is part of the point of the patch ( I would not have even attempted this if it wasn't so easy... ) and my long writeup for Mike given he hadn't actually looked at JIRA yet. Uses existing code/architecture - bit flag and device attributes - to mark a device as "don't do any SNMP to this device right now" 1) Observium uses fping... 2) Smokeping is horrible - can provide great value sure, but horrible to use, and again, extra tool. I'm a long way from unfamiliar with it and have both used it many years ago, and considered it for our current environments. Not useful to us. 3) Smokeping is not integrated to Observium if the device is not monitored by SNMP - this is fine when it's just you or a small team of people who understand this and are happy to flick between interfaces and how to work with Smokeping. Not great when you have a larger team and you really just need one interface on a monitor in your operations room that tells everyone everything that's up/down/problematic right now. Particularly not fine when your level 1's can't really login on CLI and edit config files etc. 4) IP SLA's - vendor specific thing. I love them in the right environment. Fantastic tool and capability to have in a network. We have zero Cisco in this situation and don't want to add a device specifically for this. 5) Your description sounds like it's just you in this environment... and if email fails, or you're hit by a bus, no one else knows there's a problem let alone how your alerting solution works and how to maintain it. Also, manual investigation/access to history. By having Observium do the ping we get to leverage the alerting capabilities inherent to it, e.g. email/webhook/PagerDuty/OpsGenie/VictorOps etc etc etc., as well as the webUI for visual alert notification and access to graphs/history. It's actually a simpler and cleaner solution; unless you value seeing the min/max/average/jitter values that IP SLA or Smokeping can help you see. I really do understand this, on a deeper level than might be imagined ;). I have no vested interest either way personally, I’m just offering some unsolicited thoughts... I always looked at the “ping only” topic like asking a 10lbs. (4.5kg or 0.7149 stones) sledge hammer to drive a nail. Sure, it can do it but it’ll probably be messy and ugly because a sledge hammer was never meant to drive nails, and when you use tools in ways they weren’t really designed for, things can get messy. Just use a hammer instead. Cisco ASA IPSec tunnels

Hey guys, Does anyone know where to set the “tunnel name” in a Cisco ASA or more rather where Observium gets that info? I have a dozen or so IPSec tunnels built, but Obs calls them all by the outside interface IP I suspect because I am too dense to figure out where its getting the tunnel name field from? Empty alert log

Hello I upgraded from 9667 to 9725 and the alert log page is empty. Before the upgrade there were lot of logs, but now it looks like a not fully rendered page.. The syslog alert shows me logs and the bottom of the page the observium logo and the version number. The alert logs doesn't show this bottom line, just give me an FROM and TO field with a Search button and that is all. Can i check anything for the debug? Thanks Laszlo

Create a new dashboard

Hi, I'm having issues with "create new dashboard" function in observium (19.1.9661). When I select it from the menu it redirects me to url https://MYOBSERVIUMURL/dashboard_add/ but the dashboard remains the default one. I don't get how can I create a new one, can someone explain this to me? Thank you Stefano

New webhook integration for alert contacts

Hey folks, thought I'd share with the community as I recently had a need that I had to build the tool for and thought others might benefit too: https://github.com/ryanthuff/Observium_Webex_Notifier Its a script an OBS webhook contact can post to, and then post those alert details to a Cisco Webex Teams space. The instructions are pretty clear and found in the README.md. I just run the script on-box in the OBS web path (.../html/...) somewhere, then just use that URL for the OBS contact Webhook. Session lifetime

Hi, I still keep getting logged out even though Global Settings --> Authentication --> Session Lifetime --> 1 Week, Until browser restarts, it doesn't matter. After 30 minutes I get logged out. Kinda frustrating since we can't use Observium at fullest now. Any advice would be welcome with this. We already rebooted the system several times but no help. Kind regards Ricardo Franco Cantero

Contact alert webhook json payload

What I am looking to do, is when an alert notifies my webhook contact, be able to have it also grab the message_graphs blob (if one exists for the notification), so that my custom coded contact also has the graph that caused the alert, along with the alert details; thinking of jitter and RTT SLAs as the use case... So far I have worked out that the alert makes the post call to the notification queue, and the notification queue posts to the contact webhook. In the JSON payload posted to the contact, I don’t see a way to accurately identify which row I would need to select in the notification queue, to grab the message_graphs blob. There is a alert_table_id, but the message_graphs are in the notifications_queue, and since there isn’t a FK relationship between the two tables, not sure if I could accurately identify the right row in notifications_queue. Anyone ever try something like this and/or have advice? Am I overthinking this and rather than grab the blob, is a way to just remake the graph on the fly using the alert details that are posted to the contact webhook? Weathermap not drawing png files

NTP MIB Question

I see OBS has a Cisco NTP MIB.. when I add Cisco devices (like a router for example), that is also running NTP services (ntp server... etc), I don’t see where OBS is showing the information for the device. When I look at the MIBs under device properties, it doesn’t appear to be there, though the MIB is in the /opt/Observium/mib/cisco folder.... PHP Weathermap security issue.

Has anyone solved the security issue with PHP Weathermap such that it honors observium permissions? Currently if you are using weathermap anyone can reach your maps without a password if they know the standard URL for the weathermaps. Alerts Not Sending to Contacts

Good Morning Adam, I recently raised a ticket in jira OBS-2905. I have an instance of Observium running 19.1.9661 and have enabled alerting for a memory check at 70% for one of our hosts. This alert message works as expected on the web interface, the issue is that it is not sending the alert to the contacts (both slack and email). When tested with the test_alert.php script the emails send correctly this leads me to believe that the configuration of the email is not the issue. Do you have any other suggestions as to what I can test to make the alerts send to my contacts correctly when they are naturally generated? Kind Regards, Alex

Renamed interface - how to keep unified history?

I made a change on one of our routers that caused a new ifIndex & name to be assigned to a customer circuit (interface). Observium is correctly reporting the data on the old virtual i/f (which still technically exists) and – naturally – separately on the new virtual i/f. Is there any way to (retroactively???) tell Observium that these are really the same interface, and to display only one graph for the two ifIndexes? Or, if I correct the situation so the old ifIndex & name is being showing traffic again, is there any way to move, or inject, the collected data on the ‘new’ port into the ‘old’ port’s RRDs? (i.e. avoid a multi-day gap in a multi-year dataset) We are reasonably up-to-date, running 19.2.9712 – not sure what other info will be helpful here. Alert Checker Question

I have an alert checker called, "device down" and it tests for "device_status = 0". Occasionally, this alert will fire, but the underlying OS still has network connectivity to these device (ICMP). What this tells me, is that the underlying SNMP daemon on the server may be malfunctioning, because if OBS can't make and SNMP poll to a device, it makes sense to me that it would think the device_status = 0 for that device. So given that this doesn't seem to be an OBS issue, is it something others have encountered and found away around? I'm Ubuntu 18.04 here... just wondering if I need to throttle the poller or if there are other known way the community has addressed this? Thanks, Ryan

L2/L3VPN issues with Juniper MIBs

Hi. This has been bothering me for some time but I've only got the time to look at it now. When we list Ports for any given Juniper device we get a nice green label right below the speed/MTU/lag column with the name of the VRF when it's an L3VPN. Why not the same for L2VPNs? That would be nice, specially if the RT is encoded in the name (makes tracking issues easier). Second, on the righthand side of the Ports table there's an unnamed column right next to the MAC Address with some information regarding the interfaces, LAG membership, etc. There's a xconnect icon that is supposed to show the remote interface and device for L2VPNs, but that's completely messed up (see image attached). Are you aware of that? Can that be fixed? The device is correct, but the interface isn't. The same goes for L3VPN. The interfaces shown on that right column are not endpoints of the same VPN and even the devices are wrong. I'd love to help on that. Just checking ahead to see if there's anything stopping you from fixing it at MIB level or something. Thanks! Luis

Hi, We just upgraded our Observium and (perhaps it's already mentioned but the archive doesn't work) since the upgrade we keep being logged out every 30 minutes or so. We have it running on a large screen but every 30 minutes (it looks like 30 minutes, haven't timed it) it need to enter my credentials again to log in. I know I can check the box Remember my Credentials but that's not what I'm asking. I want it to keep the session alive longer like it did. Kind regards, Ricardo Franco Cantero

IPv6 privacy addresses vs IP Session binding

Pretty obvious when I figured out what was happening, IPv6 privacy addresses aren’t really compatible with IP Session binding. As I discovered and was driven nuts by for a day or two after my ISP added v6 :) If you’re using v6 and seeing rapid session expiry, try disabling IP Session binding. Consider this a RFE for IP Session binding on IPv4 addresses only. Maybe a second request for a loose form of IPv6 session binding to within the same network range (either /64 or user configurable?) to allow some restrictions on it? Not sure how feasible that would be, but it sounds like it could give us some reasonable v6 protections. Thanks for reading, -Darrell

Custom Widgets

Hello I am searching for a way to customize the widgets. With the old dashboard it was easy with the frontpage filters. With the new one I cant EDIT the SYSLOG Widget for displaying only desired severity and any Filter (Only in widget, not in global config) And the device status boxes doesnt display more than 10 boxes even if I has a lot of dashboard space. Displays a unclickable XX more Is there any documentation where can I edit them. Questions regarding parsing

Are there currently any built-in ways (that I clearly would have missed in the documentation) to create/add custom parsing/metrics? For example; I am a telephony engineer and my routers do the normal route-y things, but they also do specialized things with specialized configurations that are not present on all or most routers (e.g Dial Peers). Is there a way to define/capture configuration sections to parse (clearly, outside the bounds of SNMP, I get it..) and then either populate as a tile on the device page or some type of menu item added to the navigation bar; thinking perhaps the regex engine that is used to create the Syslog alerts or something.. I hate one-offing and "plugin'ing" code, cause then that's something I have to support; so I'm committed to using OB the way its offered, just trying to see if there was a creative way to get this done.. reverse geocoding not working

Hi, We have our SNMP location strings set in all but a few cases to “NAME [xx.xxxxxx,-yy.yyyyyyy]” and as you can see from the screenshot that works for over a hundred hosts. For some reason though, not all of them are being interpreted properly. Any idea how to troubleshoot (or fix) this? We’re not overriding anything in config.php.

Hi, In a network we monitor there are Langxunda (Lxd) Externally Modulated Optic Transmitters and Erbium Dotted Fibre Amplifiers. E.g: http://www.langxunda.com/en/goods/1167.html The current OS detection for the NSCRTV-ROOT mib does not work on them. So I added rules for them in os.inc.php. The limits which are set for the sensors in nscrtv-root.inc.php do not work for us. So I added some checks to not set a limit. Additionally I added some more sensors. We do not own the copyright of the Lxd logo, I don't know what your policy is, wrt the use of logos. I got it from the web page and cropped it to look nicer. It would be nice if the attached patch and logo could be added. If there are changes needed, please let me know (style, naming convention, etc). Thanks and best regards Reto

Assign specific dashboard to user

Hi All, i'm trying to setup a configuration to give access to traffics data to our customers, but I've encounter some problems on the dashboard. Now You can define more dashboards but I can find a way to define a dashboard for our NOC and a dashboard for the customers... The default is applied to all users, but i set this with backbone graphs, so in the case of customer with only USER privilege log in all the graph are showed as "Permission error", that's because are related to device or ports not assigned to that specific customer. So my idea was to create a dashboard only with "Status summary" and "Event Log", those to widget show only the info related to the customer. Other minor question, can You tell Me a way to change the name of the dashboard? Having issues with the email alerting..

Having issues getting the alert to mail. I am not using SMTP, I have sendmail installed locally to the OS. If I use the PHP mail(); function in a test script and execute it in the broswer, it sends mail just fine. Here is the email params in my 'config.php' file: $config['email']['enable'] = TRUE; $config['email']['backend'] = 'mail'; $config['email']['sendmail_path'] = '/usr/sbin/sendmail'; $config['alerts']['interval'] = 40000; $config['email']['default'] = "me(a)company.com"; $config['email']['from'] = "Observium <observium(a)company.com>"; $config['email']['default_only'] = TRUE; Any thoughts mates? mcrypt deprecated

It appears that the install instructions for Ubuntu 18.04 still require that mcrypt be enabled. However, mcrypt was deprecated in PHP 7.1 and fully removed in PHP 7.2, which is used in Ubuntu 18.04. In addition to updating the install documentation, what is the timeline for replacing mcrypt in Observium? What are the correct steps for installing Observium on Ubuntu 18.04? Dealing with Alert Storms

Hi All, I’m looking for advice on how to deal with alert storms. For example, we lost a UPS last night at a critical hub which cause Observium not to be able to reach most of our networks (and of course, all the alternative OSPF routes were powered via that UPS). Consequently we had several hundred alerts sent out via email and telegram. Is there any interesting way to deal with this that anyone can recommend? Thanks, Joey

Printing reports

Map Location

It seems that no matter what addressing schema I've tried to set with config['location_map']['nice_name'] ['real_address'], it continues to populate the front page map with the proper location names, but all located in Ponta Delgada on the island of São Miguel. The USA addressing formats I've tried are: street address, city, state, country and street address, city, state (Ex: 180 Peachtree Street, Atlanta, Georgia, USA) Is there an additional override I am missing, or a way to verify the location value I'm typing is understandable to the correct geopositioning on the map? Graph scale question

Using the latest CE.. All the graphs’ time scale seems to be off by a few hours. For example, a device’s port graph shows traffic for today at 2100 hours, and it’s only 1723 currently. I have verified the PHP instance Observium is using reports the correct TZ (America/New_York) and also the monitored device is in the correct TZ. Is there a UTC offset I need to adjust somewhere? Minigraphs, names and labels. Some issues.

Hello I mentioned this in a thread about something else but think it drowned and got lost. lifting it out to a separate thread since I find these issues very frustrating. Not sure if I’m alone or not. 1. Can’t I rename graphs like we could in config.php? 2. Is there any way to move the label so that it doesn’t hide parts of the graph? 3. They mini graphs are a lot slower to refresh now, can this be tweaked? 4. I get the feeling that “show legend” on the larger graphs is semi-broken and is more or less always off here. Or is there some global setting that can have been changed when upgrading? CDR Overage Alerts

Hi List, I know there has been a long-time request to enable the ability to generate an Alert when traffic (peak or 95%) goes over the CDR (as configured within [CDR] on the interface), and we would like to know if this has been realised yet? We just need a way of dynamically detecting and reporting when traffic goes over the configured CDR, using the port description’s [CDR] value. We cannot create Observium billing reports for every single customer facing port as we have thousands, and we are trying to keep manual processes to a minimum as this could easily be a generic alert of the form; ifInUcastPkts_rate > CDR OR ifOutUcastPkts_rate > CDR I believe historically there was some outstanding work to convert the discovered [CDR] field data into a normalised bps value in the database (as CDR can be given in units of Bits/Megabits/Gigabits etc). Hello I'm happy to using Observium and its Custom OID. Eveything is working fine. My question is the presentation of the values to the web. Is it possible to manipulate just for the presentation the collecte values? For example wie collect the SNR (Signal to noise) from the CMTS, this value has 3 digits like 325 in the RRD. Now for the human I would like to change it to 32.5 in the grafic. Is it possible? If not, would it be a nice features? Regards Walter

Hi I have picked up that the port cable parsing does not seem to work on Mikrotik routers, a port description of Core: sfp-sfpplus1- Trunk to 6509 becomes CoreCore: sfp-sfpplus1- Trunk to 6509 An SNMP walk gives be the below iso.3.6.1.2.1.2.2.1.2.1 = STRING: "Core: sfp-sfpplus1- Trunk to 6509" iso.3.6.1.2.1.31.1.1.1.1.1 = STRING: "Core: sfp-sfpplus1- Trunk to 6509" iso.3.6.1.2.1.55.1.5.1.2.1 = STRING: "Core: sfp-sfpplus1- Trunk to 6509” If I run a poller on the device, the “Descr” under the sensors display shows the correct "Core: sfp-sfpplus1- Trunk to 6509” but later on under the ifIndex listing the Label there is CoreCore: sfp-sfpplus1- Trunk to 6509 Regards

I do see another user ID labeled "Observium SVC" and the original system owner noted "used for upgrades". But as the only instruction for the upgrade is "svn update", it's not clear to me where this other username would come into play. Looking through the observium update doc I don't see any reference to being prompted for a root password nor an alternate svn user. Insight appreciated. Thanks, Michael

Database errors insert

Mariadb Errors such as the one below are filling up db.log to the tune of 10GB per day. There's plenty of disk space. Any suggestions on how to correct this? Geolocation is broken?

Hi When I clear geolocation for a device openstreetmap shows not found and it places it to the default in the middle of the Atlantic. Now for some reason all our stuff is being placed there. This also means that most devices are in Unknown in the Devices-> Location menu. But if I take the API request and clean it up, remove *** and amp; stuff it gives the correct answer, see the second screenshot. The url requested for this is: https://nominatim.openstreetmap.org/search?format=json&accept-language=en&a… Running the latest pro version from trunk but had the issue before, just upgraded to see if it would go away. /T

update seems to be failing

Hi, We have the Professional Subscription running on Ubunto 16.4.1 64 bit version. I am trying to upgrade from v9662 to 9684. I can't find any errors in the logs. Any thought on what I could be missing would be appreciated. svn update issue

Hi all. I have an issue running svn update. My system details below. What happens is I get 'GET request returned unexpected delta base' or less commonly a checksum mismatch'. I then revert to my saved snapshot of the VM and start again. Each time it fails at a different part. We are 588 rev's behind so I attempted to svn update -r 9217 which I believe is only one version ahead of where we are. Hoping that with fewer committed changes it would make it through. Same error though. Does anyone have any thing for me to try. I have not seen anyone else online with this issue? Thanks a LOT! Can you manually re-run conversion of old front page to new? No minigraphs left...

Hello Had totally missed that there was a new front page/dash board. So was sort of chocked when running the upgrade and I lost all my minigraphs. Is it normal that the minigraphs isn’t carried over? Can I EASILY read that line in coinfig.php and have a new dashboard created from it? Sorry if there’s a thread about this, read back a few month but couldn’t find anything exactly like this. Observium Enterprise

Hello, Our company is split into two major regions (EU & NA) where we have a central datacenter in each region, all sites in the particular region is connected to it's regional datacenter and the two datacenters are red. connected together. As I understand with the enterprise version multiple pollers can be deployed within the topology to scale vertically where in our scenario we would place them in our datacenters as everything is reachable from there (DC and WAN equippement on remote sites). How would we monitor both regions? Our concern is that the latency between the datacenters (~120ms) could cause some issues and might slow in response if the gui,rrd and mysql servers are hosted in one region. Can the rrd and mysql servers deployed redundant - one node in EU and the second in NA and also each region a local gui instance? Or is it possible to run a separate instance in each region and have a common gui with visibility of all devices? We possibly might also monitor the LAN equipment of the sites in the future - that might add a couple of thousands devices per region (no real numbers known yet) We have a network team and service desk in each region, where we have about 1.500 datacenter and WAN devices in each region to monitor in the first step - we are calculating to have around 30 people from each region using the gui daily. Does someone have such a setup? We setup the CE for testing and we would go ahead using it globally, but not sure how the setup should/would like for that and we haven't found anything in that direction... Thanks, Alex

Our current Observium (r9667) can see the temperature sensors but not the dry contact. There is any way to get the status of the contacts? Alert message in event log

Hi team, I am running Observium Professional 18.10.9472. An alert check has been created for monitoring high CPU. The Default Notifier (email) works fine, but there is no alert message in the Observium event log. In Device Property -> Alert Settings, I have the option to choose "Disable alerts -Don't send alert emails (but write to eventlog)". When enabled and threshold is reached, there is no alert message in the event log either. How can event logging for alarms be enabled ? Thanks for advice. Disabling redundancy/stack metrics for standalone Cisco switch

Hello, I have commissioned a few new Cisco 3650 switches (WS-C3650-24TD-L) which are stacking-capable, but I have them running standalone. They're on IOS XE 16.6.5 and Observium is detecting/reporting the redundancy attributes for these switches but because they're not stacked, I'm getting an alert for 'nonRedundant'. cRFCfgRedundancyOperMode = 1 Is there a way I can force Observium to ignore the redundancy metrics for these switches? I tried disabling CISCO-RF-MIB on the device but it still persists and when I run './poller.php -h my3650switch -m status' I see the redundancy attributes coming through (assumed I shouldn't? not sure). In rest of environment are pop-ups working correctly. I tried switch to rolling (unstable) version, but the problem had persisted. In source code I can see missing mouseover events for all items. Cisco VRF

Hi all, any Idea how that could be? We're using two Cisco 3850 (WS-C3850-24S-E) and VRF lite. On each discovery VRF information are deleted from observium. When doing an manual discovery of module cisco-vrf I can see the VRFs again. I can see the difference between a) /opt/observium/discovery.php -h hostname b) /opt/observium/discovery.php -h switch-vwd-sp1 -m cisco-vrf In the first case no VRFs are shown under module cisco-vrf in the second case they are. Rename/Relabel new dashboard graphs?

Is it possible to rename dashboard graphs? My install kept some good names for some graphs when converting, those are fine. When I add new ones, especially combined transit/peering graphs, I wind up with names like "7 Port :: bits_seperate”. Especially with two of those, it’s not as pretty as it used to be with named mini-graphs. Thanks! -Darrell

logging failed discoverd devices

Hi! If i run "./discovery.php -h all" at the shell observium will find new devices. Observium try to access the device with snmpV3, snmpV2 and snmpV1. If Observium can access the device it will be added to Observium and show up in the GUI. If Observium failed to access the Device it would not show up in the GUI and i don't even know, that there was a device found. Is there a way to log dicovered but failed Devices? Maybe with the failed message, Hostname and IP-Address? Or a notification in the gui like "found 3 new devices but could not access the devices. SVN update failing

I'm trying to update to the latest Observium using svn update, but this error is thrown: svn: Checksum mismatch while updating 'includes/polling/os/lancom-l310..inc.php'; expected: '1879bc17ba610d3114887696778b5fca', actual: '7c8bf78f7ae1d6d9b0a43d1620a126b1' I tried removing the file in question and svn'ing again, but same result. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to resolve? Thank you.

old 3rd-party script, need help

I’m attempting to use a ~4yr-old script that uses data Observium stores in the MySQL database, but the Observium schema has changed since then. First, the script attempts to use the “links” table, which is now called “neighbors” – this is an easy fix. Secondly, it uses the “ports-state” table, which was removed last may in updates/341.sql, with the matching SVN comments of “Remove bgpPeers-state and bgpPeers_cbgp-state” which doesn’t mean much to me. Is the functionality of the “ports-state” table gone, and I should remove the corresponding functionality from this other script, or has it been refactored into something else, in which case I’ll need to refactor my script just as much? Syslog notifications

Hi All Im not sure if this is me being thick or simply how its designed I have devices sending observium syslogs and all is good… I have setup an some syslog rules and they work fine as I can see the alerts in the syslog alerts I have then assigned the syslog rules to the contacts, but strangely enough im only getting the syslog alerts every 5 minutes when the poller is run Is this designed this way or have I mis configured something somewhere ? Its also annoying because I can get 4 notifications at a 5 min interval, 1 to say port down, 1 port up, 1 port down, 1 port up, etc… I would like them to be instant notifications when observium receives the syslog Regards Simon - Hestor

multiple authentication mechanisms at the same time for observium?

I'm running the current stable release. A question came up today about authentication, basically is it possible to have accounts authenticated via mysql AND have other accounts authenticated via radius? i.e. I want to have some local/mysql accounts on the system but have the general major population authenticated via radius. Was thinking something of a lookup process to check to see if a user is local first and if they don't exist then continue down to the next authentication mechanism. Steve

Hello, Since my recent update to the latest stable version (19.1.9661) I've noticed the variable $config['frontpage']['order'] defined into /opt/observium/includes/defaults.inc.php is no longer taken into account. Actually it displays what I had defined before but my new changes there are not taken into account. Did I miss something ? Best Regards Thibault
