RANCID Integration with RHEL

I’m trying to install RANCID on Observium using the doc http://www.observium.org/docs/rancid/. I get as far as Run this command to create the folder structure: su - rancid /var/lib/rancid/bin/rancid-cvs but get -bash: /var/lib/rancid/bin/rancid-cvs: No such file or directory Is there a different directory when running Observium on RHEL that I should be using to create the folder structure?

BlueWalker/PowerWalker EPPC UPS

Hei, I have an BlueWalker (Powerwalker) UPS and added support for my (VFI2000 LCD) as attached. This should work for all VFIs and others with the same god dam ObjectID of .1.3.6.1.4.1.935.10.1 (which should be all EPPC manufactured units). Im not an expert in Observium or all things SNMP, but this was my work. If others find it useful, then great. PS: Dont read this Yes its yet another UPS MIB which EPPC could have done with RFC1628. The unit supports RFC1628 but not enough to be ideal ;( I didnt want to make some bastard mix of both MIBS as that's just twice the mess. Best regards /Glyn

Hi Tom, I'm not sure if I got your point :) Casa c2200 CMTS does respond with 64bit counters, for example: # snmpget -v2c -c xxxx 1.1.1.1 IF-MIB::ifHCOutOctets.77 IF-MIB::ifHCInOctets.77 IF-MIB::ifHCOutOctets.77 = Counter64: 2351994689934 IF-MIB::ifHCInOctets.77 = Counter64: 319195830460 I was wondering if it's possible to force Observium to query those. Graphs not drawing after update to rev 7172

This afternoon I updated my installation to 7172 via svn. Since then, my graphs are being drawn blank (e.g. this one of the poller duration: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/3183918/pollergraph.png. Ignore the earlier gap, it's the one from about 1630 onwards I'm talking about). I've done *./discovery.php -u* as normal and have manually run *./poller.php -h all*. I have checked /pollerlog and it doesn't appear to be running automatically by cron as usual. Any ideas? Tim

LDAP Issue

Hi - I'm trying to configure LDAP authentication according to the authentication page on the observium website, but it doesn't appear to be working. If I try a login that should work or one that doesn't work the result is the same - the login fields blank out again with no error message. Just wondering how I go about fixing this? Alternatively is there any log files that can offer some explanation as to why it's not working? I've had a look but can't find any. Thanks, Quentin

CASA CMTS - 32bit counters used instead of 64bit.

Hi, I'm trying to monitor CASA c2200 CMTS device with Observium; it gets recognized as "casa-dcts". The problem is that Observium doesn't use 64bit interface counters but 32bit for downstream and upstream interfaces. This results in gaps in the traffic graphs when traffic counter overflows. How can I force Observium to switch to use 64bit counters instead of 32bit? Thanks! Pawel

Issue with traffic volume graph for asymmetric interfaces.

Hi guys, I have problem with graphing traffic graphs for one of my Observium monitored device; problem occurs when it comes to graph traffic for asymmetric interfaces - ones that only send or receive traffic. The problem is that when such interface is queried on the device for actual traffic values the response is: for only-sending interface: Rx OID -> noSuchInstance, TxOID -> actual bits for only-receiving interface: Rx OID -> actual bits, TxOID -> noSuchInstance Those values as used then to populate corresponding RRD file which results in series of "NaN"s for INOCTETS or OUTOCTETS data stores. The result is that traffic graph plotted from this RRD is corrupted - like this example: http://i66.tinypic.com/7281fo.png Currently my Observium instance is at revision 7167. I'm monitoring a little over 600 devices with my installation. Likewise in a VM, 8x vCPU @3.0GHz, 32GB DRAM, and 32GB of swap. While CPU goes up to 85+% during polls, I don't have any drops whatsoever. Given what you describe, you probably want to add more memory to your VM. Also, what is your average and overall polling time? You may need to add additional polling instances so that everything completes within the 5min window before the next round of polling starts, which again means more memory will be very helpful. I am thinking of pushing team to purchase the full version, and even for some support. I have a free version now Questions I have are the following for my managers: 1. Can I alert off of bandwidth utilization? What other types of things can I alert off for the enterprise? 2. Can I alert for jitter across an MPLS? This is a biggie, because we have about 40 circuits. 3. We use WUG, which I hate… how is this better? 4. We use Solarwinds, which is expensive, why is this better? 5. Hello, Observium (as of 0.15.9.6997) displays ifAlias / ifDescr as label for Brocade Fabric OS SAN switches. Brocade, however, uses “portnames”, which can be found at OID 1.3.6.1.4.1.1588.2.1.1.1.6.2.1.36 Is this per design or just because very few have Fabric OS devices in Observium? — Ole Hansen

Graph errors on OS upgrade

Hi list, I'm running CE version 0.15.6.6430, on my non-critical home network. I recently upgraded my server OS from Ubuntu 15.04 to 15.10. This appears to have resulted in some of the graphs in Observium now not drawing. The OS upgraded took rrdtools from version 1.4.8 to 1.5.4, and I suspect this is the root of the issue as I seem to remember this being raised on the list before. I note there was a bugfix committed in August for "Fixed some issues with rrdtool command parsing on newer rrdtool versions". Can you confirm that the draw error's I'm seeing are most likely related to the rrdtool version, and that the next release of CE will probably fix it? An example of the rrdtool error is: RRDTool Output: ERROR: Unused Arguments "" in command : AREA:inbits0#B6D14B:p3p1 Rx: Sorry if this is not enough information. LLDP issues

Spent some time trying to get Observium to deal with MIBs as produced by LLDP (Link Layer Discovery Protocol) on a couple of diverse network equipment types. Running the latest CE edition 0.15.6.6430. After initial meager success (only two boxes recognized and several L2 neighbours reported with wrong interfaces), a couple of changes in includes/discovery/discovery-protocols/lldp-mib.inc.php brought some sense into results. There are essentially two problems there: - some lldpRemoteSystemsData OIDs could not be correlated with an interface on the other side (for various reasons, see below); - a fallback mechanism which tries to find a match on an interface's MAC address produces a wrong match, because typically all ports on larger switches have the same MAC address and the heuristics just picks the first match, which is almost always wrong. In case of multiple matches the matching on MAC should just fail, which at least would not produce a senseless match causing operators to scratch their heads and wonder who crossed the cables. The comment in lldp-mib.inc.php : // Find the device by MAC address, still matches multiple ports sometimes, we use the first one and hope we're lucky if very much misguided, as all port MAC addresses on a switch are typically the same, at least on all device types that I checked. The first issue above needs more explanation. I found a couple of different reasons for a failed match, as follows. So my solution was to add "case 'interfaceAlias':" and "case 'local':" there; switch ($lldp['lldpRemPortIdSubtype']) { case 'interfaceName': + case 'interfaceAlias': + case 'local': A Case 3 is a bit nastier and is specific to our Summit Extreme X450a switches. The problem there is that the interface name (i.e. a port number) as reported in the LLDP MIB does not use the same naming/numbering convention as the IF-MIB and SQL: the LLDP MIB just uses a port number (1 .. 26), while the SQL field ports.ifName prefixes a port number with a chassis number, which is always a 1 in a non-stackable switch. Moreover the ifIndex uses a formula 1000*chassis + port number. On top of it the PortDesc in LLDP MIB is an empty string, so cannot be used to correlate with IF-MIB::ifDescr. Not sure what switch was connected there in Case 4, possibly a smaller Quanta, identifies as "armv5tejl/Linux 2.6.17.WB_WPCM450.1.3". The full patch is attached (I hope it survives the mailing list). Baytech PDU patch

It was just an archaeology job on some of the other existing PDU discover/sensor files modified for the Baytechs, but it's working well for us. Flush process causing slow performace

Since upgrading PHP to 5.4, Observium has loaded very slowly at times. Most of the time just a refresh of the homepage will take .150 seconds but occasionally it can take up to a minute to load. Running iotop shows the Flush process running taking up 99.99% IO which directly correlates to the slow page loads. Can anyone shed some light on a way to resolve this?

Log Names of non discoverable Host in autodiscover

Hi, is there any way to find out which host have been found through autodiscovery but could not be queried by snmp or aren't reachable via ICMP? Since we have lots of people working on our network, i do not always know if someone plugs in new switches or routers, especially not if they forget to configure the acls or snmp. The Observium log only shows "added x Hosts to ..." but no failures, running discovery.php -d -h all is a bit too loud and takes quite to long. Any suggestions? regards Serge

hi ! On the linux guests, you can tweak the snmpd.conf as extend .1.3.6.1.4.1.2021.7890.1 distro "/bin/cat /etc/debian_version" so Observium detects the host OS. Is it possible to set other "devices" values, like purpose and serial, via SNMP extensions ? It seems these columns aren't used. best regards, Sala

BGP Alert Checks

Team, I need some guidance. I have spent some time on the web trying to find examples of how to configure a alert checker to tell me when a BGP peer is Admin up but not working. We have quite a few peers in our environment that are Admin down and I just want to ignore those. I have tried many variations of the checker, but must be missing something. Here is a screenshot of the latest attempt. My device and entity match are set to “*”. If I change the condition or any instead of all, I seem to get alerts that are not correct as they are including peer states that are admin down. Any guidance would be appreciated. Thanks, Aaron

Hi All, Trying to monitor some simple Windows Server services (Exchange, SQL). Feature request + issues with NetApp cDot and EMC Isilon

Hi Not sure if there is a better place for feature requests, but here it goes : 1. In the group option it would be great to be able to create subgroups and assign/re-assign, so different measures related to the same infrastructure or area can be kept together. 2. Currently it is not possible to rename a group. Would be nice to have this option. 3. Would be great to have some simple functions / regex related to the group graphs to allow consolidating & filtering the data further. Right now it will either aggregate/stack data depending on what it is and it would be more flexible to have some control over this. Also being able to give the aggregated data some more meaningful data labels would be nice. Some time back I asked about NetApp cDOT support....got no answer but saw on the forum that someone was looking into this several months back. Right now the cDOT support is very limited as the MIB is different compared to standard OnTAP and it allow for multiple controller pairs in the same cluster. Any news on what the status is ? Same story for Isilon, here all the server data is gathered, but with complete unawareness of the nodes being in a cluster.... so the only way to get cluster data properly recorded & presented is to create a group for all nodes and create aggregated graphs. Anyone using Observium with IBM GPFS (ESS) ? /Jesper

I have spent some time on the web trying to find examples of how to configure a alert checker to tell me when a BGP peer is Admin up but not working. We have quite a few peers in our environment that are Admin down and I just want to ignore those. I have tried many variations of the checker, but must be missing something. Here is a screenshot of the latest attempt. My device and entity match are set to “*”. If I change the condition or any instead of all, I seem to get alerts that are not correct as they are including peer states that are admin down. Any guidance would be appreciated. Thanks, Aaron

FW: Correct metrics for storage_free checker

Hi, I'd like to use the storage_free (instead of storage_perc) to get an alert if disk space is below 500 MB. What kind of units are used (byts/mb/kb/gb) ? I was thinking the rule would be like 'storage_free lt 500' if it's in megabytes. Or should i use 'gb' or 'mb' in the equation? Regards, Hilco
