Good Morning/Afternoon, We are currently trialling Observium on several of network components and so far are impressed with the community version however threshold and state alerting is an important feature that would complete the package for us and enable us to deploy it network wide. With Careflight being a non-for-profit organisation and the IT department being a ‘cost’ department our budget is heavily scrutinised and any cost has to be suitably justified. Although we are impressed with Observium and believe it would be a great solution for monitoring our remote sites throughout Queensland, unfortunately we doubt that the cost would be approved by the higher powers as this is something that is currently ‘out of budget’. So this leads us to ask, would it be possible to get a discount/donation on the subscription charge for the professional version of Observium for CareFlight? Hello, anybody else seen a Problem with Observium and Switchports been displayed with the wrong Vlan (off by one)? This happens with Observium CE 0.14.11.6000 Observium says in the view "device/device=229/tab=ports/": Port 28 VLAN 999 29 VLAN 507 30 VLAN 999 31 VLAN 999 under Eventlog: 2015-05-26 16:01:35 29 Interface changed: [ifVlan] 999 -> 507 But it was Interface 30 that was configured. In previous Version this Problem didn't existed. Does somebody knows a solution for this? sincerly, Jordan

Hi All, is anybody else having issues buying a subscription i’ve just gone to renew my subscription using the new panel and it has just completely fucked up! 1. enter Companys VAT number, price doesn’t change, still £180 2. just says Thank you for payment and page was blank 3. client area still showing no subscription 4. Friendly Names for Ports

I checked the Observium netiquette - I did not see a "please do not repost questions." - If I'm breaking an unwritten rule then I do apologize. Does anyone know if there is a way to apply a friendly name to ports? It does not appear possible in the Community Edition front end, however, is it possible to do this via the database? Hi, some modern system (like ubuntu 15.04) used python3 by default. Since old poller-wrapper not compatible with python3, today I added experimental *poller-wrapper3.py* which should work with both (2.x, 3.x) python versions. Check wich default python version used in your system: /usr/bin/env python -V Python 3.2.3 If default is 3.x, than use new wrapper in your crontab. Note, in python3 required additional PyMySQL module (since MySQLdb unavialable for python3). In ubuntu/debian install by this cmds: sudo apt-get install python3-setuptools sudo easy_install3 pip sudo pip3 install PyMySQL How to install on other systems I do not know, welcome your tips. -- Mike Stupalov http://observium.org

What are the key lengths of these algorithms that Observium uses? I have some firewalls, which require to set explicitly which algorithm they have to communicate with Observium. However, I cannot make it work, even though I tried all the key lengths on my firewalls. How to get the same number of graphs on both Windows and Linux machines?

I have a number of Windows and Linux machines, which communicate with Observium server. Linux machines report way more information than Windows. Is it possible to get more data from Windows machines? I just installed a new obs server using the professional edition. For some reason all my graphs are empty. I think this maybe due to rrdcached, but I have no idea why. Also when I run the poller in debug mode I saw some SQL errors? Is this something I should be concerned about? Every time it has been due to a SNMPD bug on the fortigates. There is an issue with several firmware versions that returns invalid values for interfaces that have been recently deleted (usually vlan subinterfaces or ipsec interfaces). When this has happened snmp on the fortigates will still return values for everything apart from anything referencing the deleted interface (which is still in snmp somewhere). I have logged a ticket with Fortinet about this (in Feb 2014) and it is supposed to be fixed in newer firmware versions (although I have seen it crop up again on ‘fixed’ versions). When it is in this state snmpwalk actually fails the following query snmpwalk -v2c -c public fortigateIPAddress ifType Error in packet. Reason: (genError) A general failure occured Failed object: IF-MIB::ifType.45 (in this example 45 was snmp index of the deleted interface). The fix for us has always been to kill and restart snmpd on the Fortigate (on all cluster members if it is a cluster). You’ll need to find the process ID of the snmpd process and then kill it; watchdog will automatically restart it and then it’ll be fine. show running processes diag sys top 30 99 kill snmpd process by process id diag sys kill 11 <process ID> I don’t remember if you have to do a discovery after this or if it will return to normal on the next polling cycle. Interested to hear if this solves it for you – also interested to hear what firmware version you are seeing this on. Not showing ports on Juniper EX4200

Hi Everyone, I have just added a Juniper EX4200 to my kit then added it into Observium, however for some reason it does not list the ports. The JunOS is the same version as my other switches which are fine and if I discover the switch manually on CLI by device ID it appears to retrieve them fine. I have checked the SNMP config of the device against my other ones and they are the same so assume it is maybe something else. Any tips on how to resolve this would be appreciated. The system doesn't show graphics

I installed Observium on Ubuntu server. I followed all instructions available on the Observium web. However, the system doesn't show any kind of graphics. Also, I want to add a new Linux device with snmp v2 client installed, the system can't reached with the v2c features. Finally, I attached a screenshot of the linux server I could add it using CLI. Fortigate Ports Disappeared

Hi Everyone, Has anyone else had this problem? All of a sudden some of the critical ports have disappeared, first though it was SNMP process crash on the firewall however simple snmpwalk proves that's not the case. I then deleted device including RRDs and re-added, now none of the ports are showing :( [cid:image001.png@01D088DB.DC99D9B0] I'm on 6404. Still getting alerts this morning. The te2/0/2 device had counters cleared yesterday, this alert comes in this morning and counters are still good. TenGigabitEthernet2/0/2 is up, line protocol is up (connected) 0 input errors, 0 CRC, 0 frame, 0 overrun, 0 ignored I don’t think my alert is configured incorrectly as I pulled it directly from online documentation. Newbie - Mini-graphs (Mouseover & Device Title Bar)

Dear All I've checked the FAQs and document, and apologise upfront if this is a stupid newbie question. I also apologise for using cheapo switches. I think I've followed the nstructions correctly, and my install looks to be okay and working. I've added two switches: Zyxel GS1920-48 and Netgear GS728TXS. Both are communicating and collecting data. In the Devices page, when I hover my mouse over the Zyxel I get graphs for Traffic, Uptime and Ping Response; however when I hover it over the Netgear I only get the Traffic graph (this also applies to the mini-graphs in the Device's title bar). If I use the graph filter I can see I'm collecting Uptime and Ping Response for both switches. Is there a way to configure this? Many thanks in advance, James

Hi Guys, I am not sure if this is possible but I would like to be able to add a check in Observium that will monitor the state of a Mitel PBX Alarm state and then report what the state actually is. I know what the snmp variables are that I will have to use to achieve this and I can snmpwalk the PBX to get the correct results but I don't understand as yet how to apply this knowledge to Observium. I actually have a perl script that works with Nagios to do this but I prefer the Observium interface. The check the alarm state on the Mitel PBX we can use "snmpwalk -v 2c -c public HOST 1.3.6.1.4.1.1027.4.1.1.2.2.1.0". If the response in INTEGER: 1 then there is no alarm, 2 is MINOR, 3 is MAJOR and 4 is CRITICAL We can then use "snmpwalk -v 2c -c public HOST 1.3.6.1.4.1.1027.4.1.1.2.2.4.1.8" to retrieve the actual alarm details. Just a point of note, since I'm not near my laptop and can't collect the requested debug information right now... I've got two ASA55xx running 8.2(5) firmware and am not having the problem on those devices. I also am polling a PIX525 running 8.0(4) firmware, and that is the only device where this graph error is showing up. Just started to use observium , it's a great product :) I have a problem with a Core switch Procurve 8212zl, Adding the device with SNMP works great! but after a while all the interfaces gets automatically deleted ..The observium device loggs just shows Interface was marked as DELETED. Hi, there. I just installed Observium system on Ubuntu server. I followed all instructions on the webpage. However, I found two problems: 1. I add a Linux server. Almost everthing was Ok. However, I couldn't see the graphics. The Observium showed the Error Drawing Graph. 2. I couldn't reach a Windows server with snmp protocol v2 installed. But, the Observium showed the following information: Could not reach 192.168.110.202 with given SNMP parameters using v2c Any ideas? While setting up Alerts in Observium I noticed both our Cisco 6880-Xs have Fan Tray 1 50V Power Supply status is false. Looking at the show environment I don't see any issues. inodes monitoring

Hi all We have a Netapp storage, and apart from used/free space, we need to monitor used/free inodes, because our applications sometimes generate lots of files and we run out of inodes. Can this item be monitored? This data is published by Netapp using SNMP, so I think this is not parsed or displayed in Observium, is it right? If so, can it be enabled? Disable Alerts Per Location for Downtime

Is there a “simple” way to disable alerts for a location? I have some scheduled power outage for a site and was wondering if you can select multiple devices to temporality disable alerts rather than go into each device one by one. I also forward alerts to my phones sms email so it will generate hundreds of sms once they go down. I do have my devices set up with locations though I’m not sure you can do anything with that. -Tom

First I must say that Observium is the most easy looking open source tool I have ever seen :) I'm trying to figure out a few config items that maybe someone can help me with. Autodiscovery If I'm using $config['autodiscovery']['xdp'] = TRUE; and $config['autodiscovery']['snmpscan'] = TRUE; First it does not seems to add any devices discovered with LLDP/CDP, nor have I found a way to do a snmpscan based on my subnets (also added) 1.) Does Autodiscover work as the config file says the feature is not yet added? PTR/DNS Does observium require a PTR record for every device or just a valid host name trough SNMP? How about FQDN? WMI Seems to be a topic not much covered and not really supported, however in the modules section of a device, let's say a server one can find an on/off switch for WMI and also a settings page. Does this mean WMI is somewhat supported or just a GUI glitch? Thanks

Hi All, not sure if this is a bug with my browser or a bug with Observium I go into one our mikrotik switches, click Health, then into Temperature if i then click the System 0 the page just keeps refreshing and going back the the same page ? it doesn’t appear to be taking me to the Temperature graphs ? i’ve also noticed that the Temperature page isn’t showing any graphs unlike the Storage or Processor pages ? I have been running this for a few weeks now and haven't noticed any issues with it. I'd like to see how the script works on a larger variety of systems before I would call it finished. Cisco switches not Polling to observium

Hey guys So as the headline reads im trying to get the graphs working to observium. I have 2 3560 cisco switches running which can ping to observium host, also the host can ping back. i have a community set up xxxx which i tried on my workstation and it works sending to observium. But trying on the switches seems to be a bit more difficult. When running php poller script i cant seem to find any errors when greping so i think to problem is with the cisco conf. When i take a look in the obserivum host under pollerlog it would seem that my workstations was last pollled but not any of the switches, Last Discovered seems to work just fine. So what do you guys think? Im not to sure where the problem is i might be in the linux host, but im not an expert at linux nor php. Do any of you guys think you might be able to help me out ? Also i have tried to remove the device and adding it again but still no luck. In observium i get this message even though i have waited 24 hours: error drawing graph Device not yet polled This device has not yet been successfully polled. System information and statistics will not be populated and graphs will not draw. Please wait 5-10 minutes for graphs to draw correctly. Hi all, After building a new Observium server our Cisco WISM2's (WS-SVC-WISM2-K9) aren't recognized as Cisco Wireless Controllers any longer. They come up as Generic Devices on the new server. On the old they are recognized as Cisco Wireless Controllers. Is there something I need to change on my side? Thanks, Chip

Hi Observium Developers, What's the situation with moving towards being able to alert on WMI apps, e.g. Exchange/MSSQL data? e.g. alert if submission queue size >= X It looks as if there's been some work on moving towards this based on the 'app_state' column in the 'applications-state' table... but only for MSSQL, as the current exchange.inc.php doesn't even serialize and insert an app_data in there. Is there a development plan for alerts on WMI apps ? Happy to contribute towards it, but I'd like to avoid wasting time working with what's currently there if a completely different direction is going to be taken. Thanks -Colin

NetApp filer graphs for Disk IO and Network IO are all NaN

We're running Observium Pro 0.15.4.6386, and I have added our NetApp 2230 filers. The filers are running v8.2.2 Cluster. I'm getting some data, but the graphs in Observium for Network I/O and Disk I/O are all NaN. Any ideas? I'm willing to poke into the issue (bad interpretation of returned values? Need updated OID?), but not sure where to start. Thanks. -Pete

Maximum length for interface descriptions?

Greetings, I've been on the Observium mailing list for a while, and this is my first inquiry. I have been using Observium for about a year now and continue to be impressed with the product and appreciate the active community on this list. I am attempting to use the default interface description parser outlined in: http://www.observium.org/wiki/Interface_Description_Parsing. However, I notice that if the interface descriptions are too long, either the "Notes" field or the "Circuit" field does not display. In searching through the mailing list archives, I hadn't found a specific answer to this. For example, if I have an interface description like so: description Cust: CustomerA's Full Name MPLS [20Mbps] (Carrier Name) {00/ABCD/000000//ABCD} I receive this output under Ports>Customers page: [image: Inline image 1] And if I adjust the interface description to exclude the "Notes" field, the "Circuit" field displays properly. description Cust: CustomerA's Full Name MPLS [20Mbps] {00/ABCD/000000//ABCD} [image: Inline image 2] Doing an snmpwalk, I do see the the full description in both cases. snmpwalk -c SNMPSTRING -v 2c ng-511-sw-edge1 .1.3.6.1.4.1.9.2.2.1.1.28 <omitted> iso.3.6.1.4.1.9.2.2.1.1.28.10610 = STRING: "Cust: CustomerA's Full Name MPLS [20Mbps] (Carrier Name) {00/ABCD/000000//ABCD}" Is there a maximum length that the parser will allow? Is this just a matter of column width on the "Ports" pages? I notice on other ports, when a customer has a really long name it does roll over to another line. Any reason the "Circuit" or "Notes" fields can't? For better or worse, I'd like as much useful information on the dashboard as possible and unfortunately some of these carrier's circuit ID's are very long... The only BGP-related metrics at the moment are bgpPeerState, bgpPeerAdminStatus, and bgpFsmEstablishedTime. The prefix data might be graphed, but the same data might not necessarily be available via the alerting system. I’d like to see that kind of alerting as well! Though I don’t think it’d replace something more robust like BGPMon. Plus, it could get quite chatty unless you could set limits on route changes. I am ecstatic that unicast prefix is graphed on Observium. Is there a way to alert on a change in the number of routes being advertised? For example, say I am receiving 500 routes from a peer, and that drops to 430, is that an alert-able event? I've been working with Ruckus's zoneflex devices, the SNMP is quite well laid out and they don't seem to die. They've already partial support in observium, with more coming when I get time :) If you find something else with similarly well structured MIBs (radios, wlans, ssids, etc all nicely enumerated) support can probably be extended to that too. Assuming of course we don't embargo russian SNMP traffic before then :D Adam. excluding servers from alert checks

Hi, I'm trying to exclude some servers from a check, but it does not work. Check Conditions processor_usage greater 80 Device match: * notequals db-02 notequals man-01 Entity match * But when I run regenerate the two machines have always the alerts enabled. removing the * from Device match don't help either. A second question, is it possible to suppress alert checking during a certain period , I'll do off site backup each day that triggers this alert. The alert check: Traffic exceeds 85% with a delay of 2 If I put the delay higher I will not receive 'real' alerts.

I'm considering replacing my Cisco 2821 with a PC-based router in the near future. (I'm currently thinking PFSense or Freesco, but I haven't really started research in depth yet.) Hi, we have an Observium paid edition and we are experienced a very bad degradation on performances after the last update. It seems (checking with htop) that the rrdttool "eat" all the CPU and stuck on it. Hi All, I have an issue were whenever I add a new vlan(port) and new vlan(port) interface observium is not picking up the descriptions and not listing properly in the web interface. However you can see the IP's associated with the interface and some graphs for it. Any help would be appreciated. I am running subscription and on the latest svn build. Nitesh

Automatic alert regeneration

Hi all We're alerting on port errors on ports matching some conditions. If someone will add a port matching those conditions (eg. SFP), the port will not be added automatically to the alert check. Is there a way to automatically regenerate? Cheers Andre

Alert Check not Working

I have an alert checker set up to alert for CPU gt 80%. I also have an Alert checker for ifOperStatus. It seems many of the devices have never been checked despite regenerating multiple times. When I hover of the “I” for information its an empty square. Issue happens on the same exact device models and on others we get a result of Checks Ok and some array data under the “I” Devices running identical IOS images, one works, another doesn’t. What information can I gather to help see what the issue may be? Version: Observium 0.15.3.6350 (rolling) Server 4vCPU / 8GB RAM 166 Devices (mostly Cisco Switches)(Polling/Alerting on Mostly Uplinks only, not access interfaces) Thannks. We also use fiber, and copper based technologies. microwave != wifi We are not alone in using a mix of technologies to deliver bits to customers. T-Mobile, ATT, Sprint, AllTel, Cellular One, Verizon, etc all use microwave (wireless) technologies to deliver bits. I, like others, have offered to write code, have asked for pointers on how to get started writing code, all appears to have fallen upon deaf ears. I've offered to PAY others to write code to support our kit, with features we need. No takers. As a PAID user, I'm quite shocked and disappointed in Adam's childish behaviour. Users of Observium should be concerned that their continued investment could be a loosing path as more people move AWAY from the product and go support other packages. On two lists that I saw the above URL, not less than 3 dozen people said they where removing observium and not renewing their annual subscriptions. I suspect that will become a trend. Cheers

Hi one host cannot finish the pooling procedure, even though i run it separateley: ./poller.php -h router_host_name -d ..... ..... including: includes/polling/cipsec-tunnels.inc.php after that a lot of messages of this kind: ..... cipSecTunStatus.3157 = active cipSecTunStatus.3158 = active cipSecTunStatus.3159 = active cipSecTunStatus.3160 = active ..... Alerting Contacts

Hello, Does anyone know if it is possible at current status to have alerting sent to multiple users. Say I want only Cisco IOS devices to get alerts at an email and Windows devices to get alerts at a different email. Is that level of granularity built in at present or on the way at all? Right now my sys admin and I don’t need each others alerts… Thanks in advance.

I'm sure Adam or others will correct me if necessary, but I seem to recall the documentation saying you can do that by specifying <email address> as part of the SNMP contact value on the device, and whatever you put in config.php will cover those devices that don't have an email address specified in the device snmp contact value. I could be wrong, it's been several weeks since I last read that part of the documentation. Constant 'reboot' messages for all devices with no uptime counter

Hi, All of our devices which have no uptime counter (such as IP PDUs and temperature sensors for example) are constantly showing as having ‘rebooted’ every single time they are polled. The issue seems to have started on 27/03/15 at our 6AM SVN up – so whatever revision was released at that time. Since we have a very large number of these devices, the net result of this is a pretty useless eventlog ☺ Like this: [cid:image001.png@01D06CA4.83A8D2A0] …and so on… For each devices they have (always) shown this for Uptime: [cid:image002.png@01D06CA4.83A8D2A0] Since the devices do not have any uptime counters on them. Hey, I guess I have found a bug. In ./includes/common.inc.php on the function gethostbynamel6. A few things I noticed in the debugging process and totally unrelated to the problem: - the name gethostbyname6 is a bit confusing since it does both I would rename it to gethostbyname - same goes for $try_a I personally would pick a more descriptive name - "Could not resolve $host" in ./includes/functions.inc.php and ./includes/functions.inc_d.php, since It took me some time to figure out what this means I would add something like "Could not resolve $host with your DNS or your Hosts file" But all in all it's a nice code base for a php project, well done! I am also using Cacti which I plan to replace and there all ports are discovered and graphing works fine. match port_id with rrd graphs

Hi, I would like to do some rrdtool fetch against the raw rrd files observium generated to get some reports. But I couldn’t figure out how to match the portid or device_id from observium tables to get the correct path to match to the rrd files. Rrd files location seemed to be at ~observium/rrd/devicenames. But the rrd file name like port-123.rrd, 123 seems not to be the port_id in the ports table. Rather it’s device specific. Thank you very much for your help. —Zhenhui

Discovery on Nexus 3K removes all interfaces

I am running 0.15.3.6350 and have noticed that some time ago all interfaces on my nexus 3k's gets marked deleted every time discovery runs. snmp crash on nexus 7k when polling certain OID

I'm running observium CE 0.14.11.6000. We just ran into an interesting problem on a Nexus 7K running 6.2(12) code. When observium polls the device, the snmp process crashes and reloads (this happens with every 5 minute poll). Managed to track it down to a specific OID that's causing it: 1.3.6.1.4.1.9.9.91.1.1.1.1.4.22809 It takes less than a second to reload the snmp process on the 7K; we're engaging cisco to see about a fix, but in the interim besides disabling the device, is there a specific way to block/not poll this particular OID? Older nexus code appears to not have this problem as. Steve

Greetings, I've recently installed observium and find that it is a great tool. Kudos for developing something so useful and easy to use. I do have a couple of questions. I desire to set the device_id for some of the devices to a specific value. This is not supported in the interface. It looks like I *should* be able to modify the code to allow me to do this, but before I do I wanted to check and see if there is already a way for me to accomplish this without having to modify the code. I also desire to be able to add devices programatically via an API call from an external system. I looked over the existing simple API (not extensively) but it didn't seem like that was possible. So basically I want to be able to do something like: http://myserver/api.php?mydetails&including&device_id and have it add the device while specifying the device_id. Is that possible? Hi (especially adam - can you take a read please) Background I have been working on integrating support for Ubiquiti wireless products so that wireless stats can be shown on the "wireless" graph page for these devices. I created routines to process the mibs in /include/polling/graphs using the original loop method to parse the mib to generate and populate the RRD's and everything is working absolutely fine. I will of course submit this work for inclusion once tested/verified fully. However, i read the README (you see people do read README's!!!!!!!!!!): "Please make sure you use the *new* format of graphing poller. Generate a $graph_defs array to be used in collect_table." And i thought I would have a go at the $table_def method. So I defined the MIB as per $tabledef and come across issues with multi indexed oids. In this instance from a MIB walk we have two oids as follows: ubntRadioRssi.1.1 ubntRadioRssi.1.2 So i put the following in table_def: 'ubntRadioRssi.1' => array('index' => '1', 'descr' => 'RSSI Chain 0', 'ds_type' => 'GAUGE', 'ds_name' => 'RadioRssi_0'), 'ubntRadioRssi.1' => array('index' => '2', 'descr' => 'RSSI Chain 1', 'ds_type' => 'GAUGE', 'ds_name' => 'RadioRssi_1'), But, of course, (knowing what i know now) this does not work because the array index is the same and you only get the last entry. So i thought try with a blank index specifying the full oid: 'ubntRadioRssi.1.1' => array('index' => '', 'descr' => 'RSSI Chain 0', 'ds_type' => 'GAUGE', 'ds_name' => 'RadioRssi_0'), 'ubntRadioRssi.1.2' => array('index' => '', 'descr' => 'RSSI Chain 1', 'ds_type' => 'GAUGE', 'ds_name' => 'RadioRssi_1'), But this didn't work so I investgated. The issues surround the handling of the separation of oid and index in both collect table AND snmp_get_multi. Let me Deal with snmp_get_multi first. Snmp_get multi expects an array of full oid's - great. However it spits back an array of oids and index separated. Because you use explode to breakup the oid it will only ever return the first index after the first "." rather than the full index after the first "." I am talking about this code at approx Line 464 in /includes/snmp.inc.php foreach (explode("\n", $data) as $entry) { list($oid,$value) = explode("=", $entry, 2); $oid = trim($oid); $value = trim($value); list($oid, $index) = explode(".", $oid); if (!strstr($value, "at this OID") && isset($oid) && isset($index)) { $array[$index][$oid] = $value; } } This can be corrected if you change it to the following code. In this case the base oid is returned with the FULL index in the index. Current code is at approx 898 in /includes/polling/functions.inc.php: $oids[] = $oid.'.'.$entry['index']; $oids_index[] = array('index' => $entry['index'], 'oid' => $oid); Again if this is changed to the following so that oid and index is re-split like the return from snmp_get_multi we have a working solution where you can specify the full oid as an index for the oid array in table_def with an oid index of '' (blank): if ($entry['index'] != '') { $fulloid = $oid.'.'.$entry['index']; } else { $fulloid = $oid; } $oids[] = $fulloid; $dotpos = strpos($fulloid, '.'); if ($dotpos != FALSE) { $splitindex = substr($fulloid, $dotpos+1); $splitoid = substr($fulloid, 0, $dotpos); } //$oids_index[] = array('index' => $entry['index'], 'oid' => $oid); $oids_index[] = array('index' => $splitindex, 'oid' => $splitoid); So this is a possible solution to the multiple index problem on an oid. By specifying the full oid with blank index. What do you think? Seems like a Win/Win to me but my experience of Observium php code and structure is < 1 week.
