All, I would like some help with the UNIX Agent. I have been able to get the agent up and running on the device and listen on port 36602 which in turn the Observium server can communicate with. I have UNIX Agent turned on in Obervium config and the server does show me a button to turn on "BIND" with a slider button. When I slide the BIND button to ON and press save Observium says "No Application found on this device." I have provided screenshots. What am I missing because I am close to getting this working. I am running Observium 24.3.13396 (stable) Thanks, -- Tim

status field in devices table

I have 2 Palo Alto firewalls which dropped off the map at the same time about 25 days ago. I think it may have coincided with an Observium upgrade; but I didn't write down update particulars and I don't think Observium maintains a history? When I run discovery with debug there is a SQL query posted (which fails) attempting to lookup the device: SQL[SELECT * FROM `devices` WHERE `disabled` = 0 AND `hostname` LIKE 'vpn01-p.{redacted}' AND `status` = '1' AND `poller_id` = '0' ORDER BY `last_discovered_timetaken` ASC] In this case, the query fails because "status" is actually set to 0. So what is the "status" field for in the "devices" table and how is it set 'wrong?' There is a "statuses" tab in the web GUI for the device's "properties", but in this case (a PAN firewall) there are 2 MIB entries for indicating the fail-over status of the device pair ("HA State" and "HA Peer State"); so I don't think they have anything to do with the "status" field in the DB. -- Clark 159a 508/289-3112

Hi, my company was using Observium (Subsciption Edition, SE) for quite a long time so I wanted to stick with Observium for my private lab. Since I have just some private Mikrotik routers and APs in the lab, the commercial edition might be way too mighty for my ~ 10 devices. So I tried to get the old installation downgraded to the CE edition. There was a hint on Observium's website a long time ago but I was not able to find it anymore. So I tried the idea from the current webpage (starting from Community Edition): Since I had an old Mariadb installation, I had to upgrade to Mariadb10.6.17 as well during installation. After I updated the databases with |/opt/observium/discovery.php -u | and made a full discovery with |/opt/observium/discovery.php -h all | |But I ran in trouble with the installation: | |So, my downgrade does not work this way. And yes, I got a backup of the previous installation ;-) | | | | | |I think, this derives from the information, that the CE Version does not support groups (?), but this is just a guess. | | | | | |So basically, I have two questions:| |1. span port on hp switch alerts as down....why?

Hi, I have created a simple checker to notify on some specific ports. The way I built it is that I include the word "alert" on the description. The checker parses that and alerts if that port goes down. This is working fine for the most part...except on one port. On my switch, C8 is a fiber 10gig port and it is up as shown here: Status and Counters - Port Counters for port C8 Name : random span port MAC Address : eaaaa3-cd9bb8 Link Status : Up Port Enabled : Yes [cid:image002.jpg@01DA7C37.EF9B2A60] However, the checker lists it as down: [cid:image009.jpg@01DA7C37.EF9B2A60] The test conditions are pretty simple: [cid:image010.jpg@01DA7C37.EF9B2A60] The only difference between the ports that work and C8 are; it is 10gig fiber and it is a span port...do either of these issues explain why this port is listed as down (only by the checker)??? Capture gaps when retrieving interface traffic data …

Hello! We query with snmp Observium the port data from a Mikrotik router (CCR2004-16G-2S+) with RouterOS 7.14.1 (Level 6) via SNMP from 4 WAN interfaces with polling and alerts. However, we always have gaps in the data. Every now and then 5-10 minutes of data are missing, so that vertical lines without data appear in the rrd - of course this only becomes clear in the 6h overview. We are surprised because we have the impression that it only started on this device (and others) almost a year ago. We therefore renewed the hardware, reinstalled the system (debian12) and only queried this router alone (also deleted the query from the old Observium to avoid parallel double queries). We look at https://.../pollerlog/ and see our patient there: Device Last Polled 10.X.X.1 100% 108.67s (...) and others of the location with 1-19%... Why 100%... where are the key data relevant here? We would be happy if someone could help us adjust the Observium "Poller Wrapper" parameters if necessary. Is there potential for adaptation there? Greetings Frankfurt/Main Stefan

Alert checker conditions

Hello, I'm attempting to create an alert checker for our router and switch power supplies. I seem to be part way there but am seeing some unexpected behaviour that I cannot explain. I started with the test condition: sensor_event notequals ok and the associations are "or:" Sensor Description match PEM* Sensor Description match Power Supply 0 @* Sensor Description match Power Supply 1 @* Here's a specific device inventory showing PEM 0 status is currently down: It seems the last two associations don't mach anything and for some reason the PEM* association only matches the power supplies that are ok, not the one I want the alert for which is currently down. I've tried to match against "Power Supply" and that matches power supplies in my servers but they don't seem to have a status, more like a current sensor instead. I'm attempting to deal strictly with the power supplies in our Juniper routers and switches and from what I can tell they all have a status/sensor_event state. I think the two "Power Supply 0 @*" associations should also match additional power supplies as shown in the list below taken from the hardware inventory and filtering for a description of Power Supply: Clearly I'm missing something en the alert checker associations but I'll be darned if I can figure out what that is. I've tried to match on MIB as well but nothing seems to match those power supplies. What am I missing here? Thanks, Dave.

Hello Observium Team, In our Datacenters we would like to make use of "jnxVirtualChassisMemberLocation" for Juniper switches using Virtual-chassis techhnology. Normally virtual-chassis are in different locations for redundancy reasons. The "snmp location" is not really good to capture the location of the device (as the two switches are in different places but location will show what is configured with "snmp location" command). We updated our switch config with "jnxVirtualChassisMemberLocation" information, but we still dont see the data in Observium. > show snmp mib walk jnxVirtualChassisMemberLocation jnxVirtualChassisMemberLocation.0 = B-U-099 R01.01 jnxVirtualChassisMemberLocation.1 = B-U-098 R01.02 Is this feature on the roadmap to be added? Adding more Nagions plugins

I went ahead and added another plugin to the /usr/lib/nagios/plugins directory where all the other working plugins are. When I go to add a probe it doesn't show up in the drop down box. Is there something that has to be ran to look for new plugins? Permissions/use/group are the same as the other plugins that work. Thanks

dark ui image legend legibility

Syslog repetitive alerts

Is it possible to suppress repetitive syslog alerts? if yes how can I do this? The issue is I have a particular site which has an issue with one of the internet connections, it keeps disconnecting and reconnecting every 2 minutes. A syslog event is logged each time and I am getting an email alert for each log.

Advice please ! 😊 I have a server which has been running Observium well for some time. Although upgrading the Observium build is easy enough following the instructions at Updating - Observium<https://docs.observium.org/updating/#upgrading-the-subscription-edition-to-…> this obviously does not update the O/S itself. I had a try at upgrading following online instructions yesterday but after he upgrade was complete the Observium web interface would not display – I just got a page of text which I assumed to be PHP script being displayed rather than “running”. Does anyone have any idiot proof (ie aimed at Linux novice) guidance to upgrade the OS without breaking Observium ? Luckily I had taken a snapshot of the VM so could roll back without any drama. During polling of a host the syslocation -which is returned correctly by snmp- gets changed into another location (which is an old location before moving from "Address B" to "Address A"). $ /usr/bin/snmpget -v3 -l 'authPriv' -n '' -x 'AES' -X 'passwd' -a 'SHA' -A 'passwd' -u 'username' -Pud -Ih -OQUs --hexOutputLength=0 -m SNMPv2-MIB -M /opt/observium/mibs/rfc:/opt/observium/mibs/net-snmp 'udp':'HostName':'161' sysUpTime.0 sysLocation.0 sysUpTime.0 = 0:8:31:49.72 sysLocation.0 = "Address A" This is the correct address returned. A few lines lower in my debugging output I see: sysLocation rewritten from 'Address A' to 'Address B' by DB override. Even if I change the address in mysql to the correct address the polling process keeps changing it to the old address. Remove Switch Access interfaces from polling

Hi All, I'm a newbie user of Observium. I need to clear the polling in order to not have the access port checked on the campus that we monitored. We have about 50k access interfaces splitted on Cisco and HP Aruba stack. I understand that i declare in config.php the bad iface but they have different name: Cisco -> Gi1/0/1 HP Aruba -> 45 My goal is: only the uplink will be checked. At the time, there is NO fec available via ANY snmp mib. "we currently do NOT have support for Ethernet FEC Statistics via SNMP. Error in Observium

Hello, good morning I have a problem seeing the information of 3 Cisco CBS350 Switches in observium (professional version), I add them normally like any other device, however it does not show me its Processor, Temperature, fanspeed, Status Indicators, etc. [cid:image006.jpg@01DA4F7C.759355E0] In other Cisco Switch models the tool works correctly. Hi, We've got various Juniper devices with links that have FEC enabled and CLI output shows the FEC stats, but I don't see them anywhere in Observium. Is this not supported or am I missing something to where it's at / what is it called? Thanks

cisco ASA's polling slow

Hi, I am just noticing that my Cisco ASA's poll really slow. While all my other infrastructure seems to poll about 5 to 7 sec per device, the ASA's all take 50 to 60 sec. Does anyone know why this is and maybe how to speed things up? I’d be happy to help however I can with this.. I'd really like to be able to see some information from my APs around usage/clients/errors/etc.... if you want more mib walks i can update the jira ticket with them again? but im not sure there will be much else to glean as not much has changed here.. if that's jus not gonna happen .... for.... whatever reason ... is there a vendor whose APs *ARE* well supported? I'd kinda figured this would be a solved problem.... or at least, wouldn't still be an issue several years later. is there anything I can do to help get traction here? PowerDNS Recursive Server application

What is the process for support on applications for observium subscribers? In this case the PowerDNS Recursive Server application. Should we reach out to the original author. In this case the script is very simple and it seems it has no documented authors. The issue is the script is no longer working even though it was in the past. RRD went missing after interface description change, screwing up billing.

Hey there, I have a bundle ether interface that had its interface description change, and now when I'm viewing the bill summary which keys to this bundle ether interface, the graphs are missing, and if I hover over the port under "billed ports" in the bill information section, I get 4 of the same error: ERROR: opening '/opt/observium/rrd/<<IP>>/port-113.rrd': No such file or directory. I go into the server and sure enough there is no port-113.rrd in that directory. Also, the port description name under the billed ports section shows the old interface description still. I have another bundle ether that also had an updated interface description and that one is fine, and the port description is updated correctly on the billing page. How do I fix this? It seems like maybe data is still getting successfully pulled because the Used counts are increasing along with the average. What would happen if I created an empty port-113.rrd file in the directory, and why would this file have gone missing? Thanks for any help you can provide. -Seth

Hello, we have installed observium 23.2.12520. When the survey is carried out on the devices, there are several that indicate that the time used was 1 or 2 seconds while others exceeded 20 seconds. How could this be fixed? The devices have the same make and model. -- Saluda cordialmente

SNMP sysLocation NeDi format

I found a post from 2014 showing the NeDi format works when using the Google API. I have tried a few different variations of it but under the location it shows a location for each device as the rack unit is different per device. Is this not supported and we should just do the physical location and not deal with the rack and rack unit or I am missing something? I thought before I had used () or [] in the location and the map parsing still worked but I don't see that in the docs anywhere. Thanks

PHP Weathermap Integration

Hi Guys, We added PHP Weathermap into Observium ~2 years ago, but the enabling option wasn't documented because there was an odd javascript bug breaking the UI. It turns out the bug was the same variable name being used in two completely separate bits of code, causing a clash. Typical Javascript. This is fixed now and it mostly functions, so I've unhidden the enabling option in the web-based config. $config['weathermap']['enable'] = TRUE; It works slightly differently to the original weathermap, it generates maps on the fly and is a little better integrated into the UI. It retains all of the old issues though, the weathermap code is very, very old and should not be enabled on installs untrusted people have access to. xinetd not supported on RHEL 9, use systemd instead

Hi, as xinetd is not provided for RHEL 9, I wrote a couple of systemd units to make this work. I am sure someone smarter than me could make this better, but I have confirmed this does work on any modern systemd implementation. Would it be possible to get this in the documentation so the knowledge is not lost? Traffic accounting not working anymore

We recently built a new server with Ubuntu 22.04.3 LTS and migrated Observium over. Everything seams to be working fine except for the Traffic Accounting. On the summary screen, it shows data from months ago (just before the upgrade), but when you click on one of the "bills" and look at the bandwidth graph, it's blank. I've tried adding a new bill and it same thing, no data. But if I click on the interface and go the that switch port, all the graphs are there. How can I reconnect the Traffic Accounting to pull data from the switchport graphs again? Thanks all!

is there an alert kill switch?

Hi, when my Microsoft servers patch monthly, they often reboot and that causes an alert that is unnecessary for me. Is there a way (maybe a script I could write) that would disable alerting? I am thinking about making a cron job that would run monthly (at the time I am patching) that would disable alerting...then maybe 2 hrs later, re-enable alerting. Is this possible? Hello, I am deploying Observium into a secured environment and I've a few questions. * What security measures are in place to protect subscription SVN branch? * Does SVN do any checksums or hashing of the code after it is checkout to the client to ensure no malicious attempts were made in transit? * Is there a contact name and email we can document in cases where we need to get direct support? * Is there a regular notification mechanism for updates to Observium? Dear members, We have a webhook link to Microsoft teams for alerting from Observium. This works except for the "green/red" icons for a new alert or a fixed alert. We get "🔥" and "✅" instead of the icon, we have seen this working once but can't get it the work anymore. Do you have a solution how we can fix this? WMI Polling shows only 3 services

First time posting and hopes that someone can assist. Been using Subscription version of Observium for over 10 years collecting data on over 150 server farm using it daily and have been asked to now add monitoring of Windows Services. I started to do this via Probes and SNMP checks but due to the shear volume of services and servers involved this would be a tedious process. I would like to use WMI to monitor Windows Services as it appears to poll faster. Unfortunately I ran into an issue where it only displays 3 services at a time. Windows Server has over 200 services by default, I don’t plan on monitoring all of them but at least a couple dozen. Using WMI would be a much easier way to setup alerts if I could get the full listing to appear, which is where I am needing help. Here is my setup to reproduce the issue (generalized information used for security) Follow the WMI setup in the help documentation for my UB 22.04 server Global Settings > Polling > WMI (turn on) Server discovered via SNMP Open Properties of Server and edit WMI information (per server polling only no global settings) WMI Hostname = nacn_ip_TCP:hostname.domain.local[sign] WMI Domain= domain WMI Username = username WMI Password = password After a couple of minutes, I get the results of only showing 3 services not a full list. AllJoyn Router Service Remote Desktop Service Themes I have tried this on multiple servers and the same 3 services appear each time. I began to look into the code and run the wmic query on the web server itself using the following query wmic -U “domain\username%password” //ncacn_ip_TCP:hostname.domain.local[sign] “select DisplayName, Name, State, Status from Win32_Service” It gave me the full listing results and from what I can see this is where the issue lies. CLASS: Win32_Service DisplayName|Name|State|Status AllJoyn Router Service|AJRouter|Stopped|OK Application Layer Gateway Service|ALG|Stopped|OK Application Identity|AppIDSvc|Stopped|OK … Telephony|tapisrv|Stopped|OK CLASS: Win32_TerminalService DisplayName|Name|State|Status Remote Desktop Services|TermService|Running|OK CLASS: Win32_Service DisplayName|Name|State|Status Themes|Themes|Running|OK Storage Tiers Management|TieringEngineService|Stopped|OK … The first item of the WMI services is the AllJoyn Router Service, then about halfway down the listing it produces a different CLASS:Win32_TerminalService and the headers. Then it has Remote Desktop Services and starts again with CLASS:Win32_Service and headers again, and the third entry to be displayed Themes. Looking through the code I think the issue resides in the /opt/observium/includes/wmi.inc.php code and the function wmi_parse. This is the function that is used (from what I can back trace) for performing the parsing of the WMI call and populating the database with the WMI entries. But when running the mysql query for the services listing it only shows these 3 listed and not all the services that the manual query performed on the server displays. I would like to ask if someone can look into the WMI process and check the coding to allow the WMIC query to populate ALL the service results in the web site. As a separate test I also went into the Global Settings > Discovery > WMI AutoDiscoveryOptions and added in several services manually (list of 10) not including the Remote Desktop Services and the results I get on the Windows Services tab show the Remote Desktop Services. So the 2nd CLASS that appears for this service appears to be causing the issue. Any help is appreacited.

Hi, I’ve been trying to find more detailed info about Observium Enterprise Support, does anyone here has such an agreement and can share the details? All I can find on the web page says: “Included Enterprise-grade email & live support: Yes, 10 hours” So I take it that means that up to 10 hours of live support is included, what will be the cost per hour for support after those 10 hours? I cannot find any definition of what live support is, I would guess that it means some sort of online meeting with screen sharing but it would good to have it in writing so we know what to expect. EqualLogics Volume Monitoring

Good Afternoon, I have been setting up Observium, which I am relatively new to, and am not sure how to monitor the volumes of the EqualLogic Storage Array, Observium has detected it and provided sensors for the Physical Disk, fan, Controllers, and so on but no volumes are picked up. According to the following link, there are MIBs for this. https://mibs.observium.org/mib/EQLVOLUME-MIB/ If I SNMPWALK the OID's then I get the expected data, would it be possible for someone to advise how I may go about getting this data to be shown in Observium itself? Hi Team, we are trying to monitor the above device. This works well. Observium can even monitor the GPON PON interfaces eg: gpon-olt1/1. The problem we are having is trying the monitor the ONU devices on site at a client. We use Raisecom ONU's. There are currently mib files available but we noticed that the mib files are empty. So it would seem that Observium cant monitor the bandwidth of the onu's behind the splitter that is connected to the pon interface. Is this something we can manually do from our side? if we have a look at the mib files in /opt/observium/mib/raisecom and vi into the mib file, it is populated. Teams webhook debugging

Dear members, After the great help with the dashboard I went of to the next part in automating, which is for us alerting through Teams. Hopefully you can help me as quickly with this as the last time. We want to use Teams Webhook function to create an alert message, which holds a couple of components. I have configured the webhook within MS Teams and setup the link with the Observium contacts. Created a alert which triggers and mentions the notification of contacts, but nothing happens within MS Teams. The problem can be with a couple of things, so I wanted to start with logging with Observium. This can probably show me if the firewall blocks, if the Webhook link was a bad URL, etc. Where can I find a debugging log of the notification actions, so I can start debugging? Last week I upgraded a server to Observium 23.10.13043 (stable) In Polling information I had a huge increase in system polling, (See attached images.) I backed out the upgrade and tried it again a few days later, when I had more time to investigate. Obtaining good thresholds for monitoring SFP light levels

We would like to alert if an SFP's received light level is too low. The light level sensor data is present and linked with a specific port so we can adjust the alert checkers based on attributes of the linked port. What we haven't figured out how to do is get appropriate thresholds for alerting for each SFP. The SFPs define warning and alarm thresholds which are readable on the devices containing the SFPs but that data doesn't make it into Observium for most of our monitored devices as far as we can tell. Similar SFPs usually have similar thresholds so grouping by SFP vendor and part number then creating a check for each set of SFPs with manually extracted and entered thresholds could be acceptable. Observium does show the SFP vendor and part number on the device overview and inventory pages along with which port contains the SFP but there doesn't seem to be a way to reference this data when creating port or sensor groups or alert checkers. There are also the automatically generated or manually set thresholds for sensors inside Observium itself. The automatically generated thresholds are often missing and we are not aware of a way to ensure they are present or reasonable. Manually set thresholds could work if there was a way to set and audit those thresholds in an automated fashion. We don't see a way to use the API to do this though (we're using the subscription edition). Are there recommendations on how to achieve this? Is this a solved problem and we're running into a bug? device_rebooted metric is now NULL instead of 1

We have an alert checker using the device_rebooted metric to monitor for reboots. The metric used to read as 1 when a reboot was detected as is documented <https://docs.observium.org/entities/#device>. After updating to the latest stable revision (r13020) from r12520 the metric now reads as NULL immediately after a reboot. Is this change in behavior intended? Corwin

repeated recovery messages

Hi I get new recovery messages for my pandacom devices (pandacom-sc) all the time. Observium does not show any alerts. For a device that has not reported any event at all since October 5, Observium shows hundreds of recoveries today alone. Any tips on how to debug this would be greatly appreciated. Andre

Hello, does anyone know if observium can retrieve BGP peering info via SNMP with RouterOS 7.10+? Hi, Thanks Adam, I am back to using Observium after many years (was on the Subscription, now on Community).. I have a question on a router (and some similar devices). The router has two interfaces, both visible from the Observium poller. It has been discovered twice, and appears twice as well on the map. sorry if this is a dumb question, but how do i read traffic graphs???

Hi, after several years of using Observium, it just occurred to me recently that I am not sure how to read the traffic graphs. For example, I always thought that above "0" on the horizontal axis was transmit and below was receive. But as I look closer, that cannot be. Also, the colors on the graph do not seem to line up with the legend...for example in this graph, I see 4 colors, light/dark green and light/dark purple. But the legend seems to have the same color for g0/0/0 as g0. I guess my questions are: How are transmits and receives represented on the traffic graphs? Why are the colors in the graph not lining up with the legend? Device Showing Down in Alerts but Device is online

Hi Team, We have problem with device alerts. Due to this we can't monitor our network. Actually, our devices are online but, in the alerts, it will be showing down. I have tried to forceful discover but still same. I think it will be software bug then i will update to latest version but at here also same issue. If anyone have solution, please let me know. Unable to send Telegram notifications

Hi Team, We are facing device up down status will be not sending telegrams. As we are seeing device is up but, in the alerts, it will be not showing up showing status failed. I think issue with my switch, but it is up & working with LibreNMS properly. Anyone knows what the issue of it is. General Question - Raritan PDUs

I'm curious if anyone on the listserv is using a Raritan monitored-per-port PDU? If so, would you be willing to share your experience monitoring it with Observium? We're looking at buying some monitored + switched per-port models, and I want to make sure we can graph each port individually like we can with other vendors. I assume we can, but I figured it can't hurt to ping the community to see if others have any experience they're willing to share to confirm/deny my assumption. Thank you for any info you can offer! Custom OID troubleshooting

Got a custom OID setup and graphing for a single device, nothing is showing up in the graphs but snmpget verifies the OID is correct. I think the text OID might be incorrect. Is there a debug log for this somewhere? This is the Professional edition. Thanks
