Dear community, This week I started with a new Observium installation, and love the product. A small problem is with my VMware 6.7 hosts (I know they are old) which keeps adding the same VM's to the list. How can I resolve this? Can't log into Observium

Hey everyone, I had a functioning install of Observium 24.4.13528 (26th April 2024) running on Ubuntu 24.04.1 LTS, just using mysql for auth. I then tried to switch to AD by entering info in the "AD" section of the /settings web UI config page. Once I did that, I got the error below when trying to log in. I switched back to mysql login, by manually changing $config['auth_mechanism'] = "ad"; to $config['auth_mechanism'] = "mysql"; in config.php, and am able to log in again. Custome Dashboard

Hello there. I want to know if there's an option to make a custome dashboard in the Observium that will show me CPU, Memory, Storage usage in percents like it shows me when I press on 'Health' and choose one of them. So instead of pressing on 'Health' and choose 'Processors' or 'Memory' or 'Storage' it'll show me in a dashboard of them in one dashboard. Question about evaluation licenses

Hi! I am wondering if Observium offers evaluation licensenses? I am looking into intergrating Observium with Zabbix, and noticed that Observium has a RESTful API included in the Professional License. I am however, unable to purchase a license in the current organization that I am in due to bureaucracy, and would love to have a evaluation license to we could test it for a month. Greetings. For some reason recently I can NOT see any alert status, if I press on 'Alerts' it is empty and doesn't show anything. Sometimes it's showing the alert for a second and then all of the alerts disappeared. I tried to reboot the Ubuntu VM and also tried to see some logs but couldn't handle it, still having this issue. I didn't change anything within the Ubuntu machine the Observium installed on so ain't got a clue what's happened. Maybe you'll be able to assist me please. Sensor limit nominal and delta OIDs need different scaling

Hi, We are trying to set appropriate limits for a frequency sensor. There are OIDs for the nominal frequency and the acceptable deviation from it. The problem is the nominal OID needs 0.1 scaling while the deviation OID needs 1 scaling (the measured value needs 0.1 scaling). Is there a way to handle this? We tried using 'limit_scale' but that applies the same scaling to both the nominal and delta limits. The specific device is a CyberPower ATS PDU. The OIDs are ePDU2SourceStatusSourceAFrequency, ePDU2SourceStatusSourceBFrequency, ePDU2SourceStatusNominalFrequency and ePDU2SourceConfigFrequencyDeviation. Corwin

Unix agent not working on non-default port

We have several devices behind a NAT that require using an agent_port other than 36602. Even though I have changed the port in the GUI, the poller seems to continue using the standard port. The graphs for few network devices not getting displayed

Hi Team! We are running Observium pro version Observium 24.6.13582(stable). Lookslike the memory,processor and network graphs are seeing a draw error. You can still the values beside but it wont draw the graphs. It says "Draw error"/nan I looked into the permissions for the rrd folders for these devices and did change a non-working one similar to a working one as root:observium but that did not fix the issue. Incorrect sensor limits caused by duplicate unit conversion

The definition for the temperature sensor on a CyberPower PDU (or UPS) environmental sensor accessory defines both "unit" and "limit_unit" as "F". This seems to cause the limit values to get converted (to Celsius) twice: first in "entity_limits_definition" using "limit_unit" and then in "discover_sensor_ng" using "sensor_unit" which is set from "unit". For us, the SNMP read limits of 59 and 90 F end up as -9.44 and 0.12 C on the sensor in Observium. This is on version r13629. Simply not setting "limit_unit" is a workaround if both the sensor and limit values use the same unit (maybe that is preferred when defining sensors?). If the units are different a proper fix is needed. Also, is this the preferred method for reporting this kind of issue? Corwin

How to add a device which only responds to ping/icmp?

Hi How can i add a device which cannot (!) speak any snmp and only responds to ping/icmp requests? We have an Aruba wlan setup (Mobility Master and two Mobility Controllers) and i want to add the aps to Observium, so that they are monitored but only by ping/icmp. Observium doesn't show interfaces within VPRN on Nokia routers

Hi Observium team, We are using Observium as a main tool to monitor our router interfaces and collect SNMP stats. We recently replaced our Juniper routers with Nokia SR 7750. We noticed that Observium doesn't work very well with Nokia routers. Observium can only show the interfaces in the master instance, not the interfaces within VPRN or VPLS instances (Nokia call those interfaces SAPs). To be able to see interfaces within VPLS or VPRN, we need to enable two other MIBs, TIMETRA-SAP-MIB and TIMETRA-VRTR-MIB. We are not sure how to enable those two MIBs. "Observium is designed to collect and display data from SNMP-capable devices, but not every device supports SNMP. In order to monitor non-SNMP capable devices, the probes system can be used to perform checks on non-SNMP devices". Hi, Checked around and can't figure out a way to do this and don't see anything in mailing list about it. Is there a way to build alerts based on the bandwidth value we are setting this way? For example we have a description of "[600Mbit]" and then want to alert on 80% of this value for example. I don't see a way to do this as the test conditions are all the parameters from SNMP. Obviously can make up a checker and do the math manually and what not but would not auto adjust and I need 100+ of these created. Would anyone else find this helpful? Thanks

Hi Our organization recently upgraded from Cisco 5520 WLC to Cisco 9800 WLC. In observium I get really good statistics about wireless client count and wireless ap count on the 5520 but not on the 9800. I am not sure if this is something on observium side or cisco side. But I wanted to ask if anyone has the same issue and if they found a solution. Or maybe this is just something that needs to be added. Bug report: Broken scaling on some SFP receive power graphs

Hi Observium team, We're having issues with some of the generated graphs. Some of our devices report the light level received by SFPs using mW (rather than dBm). We are on the latest stable revision (13582). Issue 1: The graphs generated by Observium for these sensors usually show an excessive scale of at least -100 mW to 100 mW when the data in the specified time interval are entirely within the range 100 nW to 1 mW and usually only a small chunk of that. The calculated minimum and maximum values shown below the graph are correct. These graphs worked properly in the past with a prior version of Observium. Issue 2: Selecting and deselecting the Force Autoscale option appears to have no effect on the generated graph or displayed rrd graph command. Manually running the generated rrd graph command after removing the "--alt-autoscale" option results in a good graph. Switch overview: configurable interface sorting?

Hello everyone, The port sorting in the device overview has been changed at some point. Previously, it was sorted alphanumerically, but now the numbers are prioritized. Before, the order was A1, A2, A3..., B1, B2, B3, etc. And now it is A1, B1, A2, B2..., A3, B3, etc. Is there a way to change the sorting back to the old method using a configuration switch? Missing rebuild buttons for groups and alert checkers

Hi, We use Observium groups extensively, often nested several times. Our alert checkers then reference these groups. After making changes to a group, including by adding a device, we used to force rebuilds of the groups (possibly several times) and checkers so the changes would propagate all the way through. We are on the latest stable revision (r13582) and the rebuild buttons are no longer available in the UI (possibly removed in r13391). What should we do now when we need to forcibly propagate changes? Oxidized Integration?

Hi, I am currently testing a replacement for rancid. Rancid has worked for a long time, but adding new device classes feels more and more unwieldy. Oxidized [1] makes a good first impression and I was able to add new device classes without big problems. Then of course I would also like to see an integration with my favorite network management tool :-) There are people who have already worked on this: https://github.com/colin-stubbs/observium-oxidized It looks like this patch doesn't quite work for current observium versions, so I'd like to ask if anyone is working on it and what are the chances that there could be an Observium integration (professional edition)? Polling - Real time port graphs are different on devices that run Linux natively

Hi Guys, I have noticed that the real-time graphs for devices that run Linux natively (JunosOS, UnifiOS, etc) display the traffic with "intervals in between". The non-native Linux devices (FortiOS, Cisco IOS) provide a nicer real-time graph for port traffic when polled. Is there something that could be adjusted so that the native Linux devices show the nicer graph? Best regards, Ruben

Hello all, I can see in my observium installation that many devices changed their status to down(dns). This is a new installation and we migrated the configuration yesterday on a new server and devices were working properly. At around the same time (14:20:00) a lot of our machines changed their status to down. The message in the Event log is "Device status changed to Down (dns)". I tried to find what the problem may be but I can see SNMP are correct and dns records exist for the systems. Any ideas? Thank you, Marios

Dear Observium Community We have for several times experienced problem after Obsevium Professional update. Today we updated from 24.4.13501 to 24.6.13582 (by using $ svn update & $ ./discovery.php -u) OS CentOS Linux release 7.9.2009 (Core) updated today w/ kernel: 3.10.0-1160.119.1.el7.x86_64 After restarting server we struggle logging in to WebGUI. Apache /httpd is complaining on “to many concurrent connections”. Are there any suggestion on how to update Observium without getting these problems? Any householding processes needed for a better update? Or maybe we need to be more patient and give the server some more minutes after update? LDAP - Synology

I believe I have LDAP sort of working. I am trying to authenticate against a Synology LDAP server. When I use debug mode I see debug info for invalid users and bad passwords but if I enter a proper user and password there is no debug information and I get the error message “User is disabled”. So, I believe I am missing something. Cisco ASA stopped reporting port metrics

It is very possible about that time, I applied an update to the asa's. NEWBIE Question: Global MIB Configuration

I am looking through the Global MIB Configuration and I see loads and loads of MIBs that are not used within my infrastructure. Things like Cisco, and A3COM, and many more. My question is two fold. The first is, is it good practise to disable non-used MIBS Then my second question is, is there a way to mass update the disabling of MIBS. The issue is, if I select a MIB and click disable, then the page refreshes and goes to teh top of the page. This is annoying for many because there are very many MIBs that I would like to disable. Observium 23.9.13005 Community Edition shows under PORTS --> VLANs two VLAN which are out of IEEE 802.1Q Range (0-4095) VLAN ID VLAN Name 4096 vlan4096 31 4097 VLAN 4097 after klicking on the VLAN Names it shows for both VLAN-Names all LAN Connects of our VMWare ESXi Hosts we got 2 older ESXi Hosts (v6 level) and 4 new ESXi Hosts (v8 level) an of course NO ESXi has a VLAN ID 4096/4097 Is this some kind of misinterpretation?

Help with UNIX Agent and Bind

All, I would like some help with the UNIX Agent. I have been able to get the agent up and running on the device and listen on port 36602 which in turn the Observium server can communicate with. I have UNIX Agent turned on in Obervium config and the server does show me a button to turn on "BIND" with a slider button. When I slide the BIND button to ON and press save Observium says "No Application found on this device." I have provided screenshots. What am I missing because I am close to getting this working. I have 2 Palo Alto firewalls which dropped off the map at the same time about 25 days ago. I think it may have coincided with an Observium upgrade; but I didn't write down update particulars and I don't think Observium maintains a history? When I run discovery with debug there is a SQL query posted (which fails) attempting to lookup the device: SQL[SELECT * FROM `devices` WHERE `disabled` = 0 AND `hostname` LIKE 'vpn01-p.{redacted}' AND `status` = '1' AND `poller_id` = '0' ORDER BY `last_discovered_timetaken` ASC] In this case, the query fails because "status" is actually set to 0. So what is the "status" field for in the "devices" table and how is it set 'wrong?' There is a "statuses" tab in the web GUI for the device's "properties", but in this case (a PAN firewall) there are 2 MIB entries for indicating the fail-over status of the device pair ("HA State" and "HA Peer State"); so I don't think they have anything to do with the "status" field in the DB. -- Clark 159a 508/289-3112

Hi, my company was using Observium (Subsciption Edition, SE) for quite a long time so I wanted to stick with Observium for my private lab. Since I have just some private Mikrotik routers and APs in the lab, the commercial edition might be way too mighty for my ~ 10 devices. So I tried to get the old installation downgraded to the CE edition. There was a hint on Observium's website a long time ago but I was not able to find it anymore. So I tried the idea from the current webpage (starting from Community Edition): Since I had an old Mariadb installation, I had to upgrade to Mariadb10.6.17 as well during installation. After I updated the databases with |/opt/observium/discovery.php -u | and made a full discovery with |/opt/observium/discovery.php -h all | |But I ran in trouble with the installation: | |So, my downgrade does not work this way. span port on hp switch alerts as down....why?

Hi, I have created a simple checker to notify on some specific ports. The way I built it is that I include the word "alert" on the description. The checker parses that and alerts if that port goes down. This is working fine for the most part...except on one port. Hello! We query with snmp Observium the port data from a Mikrotik router (CCR2004-16G-2S+) with RouterOS 7.14.1 (Level 6) via SNMP from 4 WAN interfaces with polling and alerts. However, we always have gaps in the data. Every now and then 5-10 minutes of data are missing, so that vertical lines without data appear in the rrd - of course this only becomes clear in the 6h overview. We are surprised because we have the impression that it only started on this device (and others) almost a year ago. We therefore renewed the hardware, reinstalled the system (debian12) and only queried this router alone (also deleted the query from the old Observium to avoid parallel double queries). We look at https://.../pollerlog/ and see our patient there: Device Last Polled 10.X.X.1 100% 108.67s (...) and others of the location with 1-19%... Why 100%... where are the key data relevant here? We would be happy if someone could help us adjust the Observium "Poller Wrapper" parameters if necessary. Is there potential for adaptation there? Greetings Frankfurt/Main Stefan

Hello, I'm attempting to create an alert checker for our router and switch power supplies. I seem to be part way there but am seeing some unexpected behaviour that I cannot explain. I started with the test condition: sensor_event notequals ok and the associations are "or:" Sensor Description match PEM* Sensor Description match Power Supply 0 @* Sensor Description match Power Supply 1 @* Here's a specific device inventory showing PEM 0 status is currently down: It seems the last two associations don't mach anything and for some reason the PEM* association only matches the power supplies that are ok, not the one I want the alert for which is currently down. I've tried to match against "Power Supply" and that matches power supplies in my servers but they don't seem to have a status, more like a current sensor instead. I'm attempting to deal strictly with the power supplies in our Juniper routers and switches and from what I can tell they all have a status/sensor_event state. I think the two "Power Supply 0 @*" associations should also match additional power supplies as shown in the list below taken from the hardware inventory and filtering for a description of Power Supply: Clearly I'm missing something en the alert checker associations but I'll be darned if I can figure out what that is. I've tried to match on MIB as well but nothing seems to match those power supplies. What am I missing here? Thanks, Dave.

Hello Observium Team, In our Datacenters we would like to make use of "jnxVirtualChassisMemberLocation" for Juniper switches using Virtual-chassis techhnology. Normally virtual-chassis are in different locations for redundancy reasons. The "snmp location" is not really good to capture the location of the device (as the two switches are in different places but location will show what is configured with "snmp location" command). Adding more Nagions plugins

I went ahead and added another plugin to the /usr/lib/nagios/plugins directory where all the other working plugins are. When I go to add a probe it doesn't show up in the drop down box. Syslog repetitive alerts

Is it possible to suppress repetitive syslog alerts? if yes how can I do this? The issue is I have a particular site which has an issue with one of the internet connections, it keeps disconnecting and reconnecting every 2 minutes. Advice please ! 😊 I have a server which has been running Observium well for some time. Although upgrading the Observium build is easy enough following the instructions at Updating - Observium<https://docs.observium.org/updating/#upgrading-the-subscription-edition-to-…> this obviously does not update the O/S itself. I had a try at upgrading following online instructions yesterday but after he upgrade was complete the Observium web interface would not display – I just got a page of text which I assumed to be PHP script being displayed rather than “running”. Does anyone have any idiot proof (ie aimed at Linux novice) guidance to upgrade the OS without breaking Observium ? Luckily I had taken a snapshot of the VM so could roll back without any drama. During polling of a host the syslocation -which is returned correctly by snmp- gets changed into another location (which is an old location before moving from "Address B" to "Address A"). $ /usr/bin/snmpget -v3 -l 'authPriv' -n '' -x 'AES' -X 'passwd' -a 'SHA' -A 'passwd' -u 'username' -Pud -Ih -OQUs --hexOutputLength=0 -m SNMPv2-MIB -M /opt/observium/mibs/rfc:/opt/observium/mibs/net-snmp 'udp':'HostName':'161' sysUpTime.0 sysLocation.0 sysUpTime.0 = 0:8:31:49.72 sysLocation.0 = "Address A" This is the correct address returned. A few lines lower in my debugging output I see: sysLocation rewritten from 'Address A' to 'Address B' by DB override. Even if I change the address in mysql to the correct address the polling process keeps changing it to the old address. Hi, I have a bunch of ping probes and I would like to write an alert for some (but not all). Remove Switch Access interfaces from polling

Hi All, I'm a newbie user of Observium. I need to clear the polling in order to not have the access port checked on the campus that we monitored. We have about 50k access interfaces splitted on Cisco and HP Aruba stack. I understand that i declare in config.php the bad iface but they have different name: Cisco -> Gi1/0/1 HP Aruba -> 45 My goal is: only the uplink will be checked. How can i use the config for access layer Cisco and Aruba stack (iface range) ? $config['bad_if'][] = " Gi1/0/1 ->?"; $config['bad_if'][] = "1->"; Thanx in advance for your support Massimo

Hello, good morning I have a problem seeing the information of 3 Cisco CBS350 Switches in observium (professional version), I add them normally like any other device, however it does not show me its Processor, Temperature, fanspeed, Status Indicators, etc. [cid:image006.jpg@01DA4F7C.759355E0] In other Cisco Switch models the tool works correctly. Hi, We've got various Juniper devices with links that have FEC enabled and CLI output shows the FEC stats, but I don't see them anywhere in Observium. Is this not supported or am I missing something to where it's at / what is it called? Thanks

cisco ASA's polling slow

Hi, I am just noticing that my Cisco ASA's poll really slow. While all my other infrastructure seems to poll about 5 to 7 sec per device, the ASA's all take 50 to 60 sec. Does anyone know why this is and maybe how to speed things up? I’d be happy to help however I can with this.. I'd really like to be able to see some information from my APs around usage/clients/errors/etc.... if you want more mib walks i can update the jira ticket with them again? but im not sure there will be much else to glean as not much has changed here.. if that's jus not gonna happen .... for.... whatever reason ... is there a vendor whose APs *ARE* well supported? I'd kinda figured this would be a solved problem.... or at least, wouldn't still be an issue several years later. is there anything I can do to help get traction here? PowerDNS Recursive Server application

What is the process for support on applications for observium subscribers? In this case the PowerDNS Recursive Server application. Should we reach out to the original author. In this case the script is very simple and it seems it has no documented authors. The issue is the script is no longer working even though it was in the past. RRD went missing after interface description change, screwing up billing.

Hey there, I have a bundle ether interface that had its interface description change, and now when I'm viewing the bill summary which keys to this bundle ether interface, the graphs are missing, and if I hover over the port under "billed ports" in the bill information section, I get 4 of the same error: ERROR: opening '/opt/observium/rrd/<<IP>>/port-113.rrd': No such file or directory. I go into the server and sure enough there is no port-113.rrd in that directory. Also, the port description name under the billed ports section shows the old interface description still. I have another bundle ether that also had an updated interface description and that one is fine, and the port description is updated correctly on the billing page. How do I fix this? It seems like maybe data is still getting successfully pulled because the Used counts are increasing along with the average. What would happen if I created an empty port-113.rrd file in the directory, and why would this file have gone missing? Thanks for any help you can provide. -Seth
